Indian Premier League - 42nd match

Deccan Chargers v Pune Warriors

Deccan Chargers won by 13 runs

About three minutes from the first ball. It's an overcast afternoon in Cuttack. Some darkish clouds about. Wind, too. Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan to open for Chargers, Marlon Samuels opening the bowling from round the wicket.

"Ganguly and Clarke at 2 and 3? I'm now frantically painting the wall, so I can watch it dry for entertainment, while they bat," says Matt Ryan. Hilarious.

3.50 pm Avinash: "Alfonso Thomas must have a niggle, else why would he be sitting out and Parnell be playing?" Ganguly did not divulge his reasons for the changes.

Elvin: "Clarke is a noteworthy inclusion. He brings valuable experience as a captain to the team as well as a versatile allrounder. Last game he took 5 wickets and is in the top ten ranking of test batting in the world. good buy, regardless he hasn't played a t20 in a while.. the pros far outweigh the cons ... "

Arvind: "I think Clarke's a bit overrated for T20s. He could turn out to be another slow batsman in a team that already has Ganguly and Uthappa struggling with strike-rates!"

Toss, 3.30 pm: Sangakkara is back for Chargers. He says he looked at the wicket today and decided to play. "It was a tough decision to make in the last game." Michael Clarke has joined the Pune squad, but not sure he's playing today.

Sangakkara has won the toss and Deccan Chargers will bat. He's replaced Dan Christian, and the local boy Biplab Samantray comes into the XI.

Michael Clarke is making his IPL debut today for Warriors. The other three overseas players for them are Wayne Parnell, Marlon Samuels and Steven Smith. Clarke hasn't played a Twenty20 match since October 2010, how do you think he'll fare? Ganguly said Ashok Dinda was not yet fit to play.

Chargers' only victory this season has been against ... the Warriors.

3.20 pm: Good afternoon and welcome to the IPL's double header on May Day. The first game is in Cuttack, where the hosts Deccan Chargers are playing Pune Warriors. Chargers are last in the league, with one win, one washout and six losses in eight games. Warriors are seventh, with four wins, but a win today will take them to fourth place. Here's our points table.

There was some rain in Cuttack earlier in the day, but the weather has cleared up now. Chargers left out Kumar Sangakkara for their previous game, and were led by Cameron White. That move didn't work so well - they were bowled out for 100 in Mumbai. Will they bring back Sangakkara today? We'll know soon enough, the toss is in a few minutes.

The players are taking a time-out. Deccan Chargers need to work out a strategy. I reckon about 140 will be a defendable score on this surface. Provided Steyn does his thing. But Deccan don't look like getting that at the moment.

Vipul: "Any particular reason why Smith has not bowled in the tournament?" He was asked that by the TV commentators, Smith said he was keen to bowl but Ganguly hadn't thrown the ball his way.

During the time-out, Donald came on the field and was having a discussion with Ganguly. Seemed to be making a point.

Parnell has been superb today, can he finish his spell well?

19.6

Parnell to Duminy, 2 runs, Duminy slogs a short of a length ball towards long-on where Smith comes sprinting in but drops the catch, it was hit flat and the ball was dying on him, Parnell gave only six in the final over

5.45 pm At 63 for 2 after 11 overs, how many of you would have predicted this score for Chargers? I didn't. Sangakkara and White scripted a jaw-dropping turnaround in momentum to post 186.

Arvind: "Looks like Sangakkara follows Cricinfo. It was after you posted Damian's comment that the carnage started :-)" It was just a fluke about the timing, but just goes to show how classy Sanga was. Some of those drives were exceptional.

End of over 20 (6 runs) Deccan Chargers 186/4
JP Duminy    4* (3b)      WD Parnell    4-1-25-1
BB Samantray    2* (2b)      A Nehra    4-0-41-1
