Indian Premier League - 45th match

Pune Warriors v Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians won by 1 run

James Franklin walks out to open the innings with Sachin Tendulkar. Surprise, surprise, Pune's lone frontline spinner Kartik will take the new ball.

7.45 pm: Mumbai Indians have gone in with three spinners, Robin Peterson, Harbhajan and Pragyan Ojha.

Pune, interestingly, are speed-heavy, with Dinda, Ashish Nehra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Wayne Parnell in their line-up, supported by the medium pace of Jesse Ryder. Without the presence of Marlon Samuels, Murali Kartik is the only frontline spinner. That begs the question whether Steven Smith or Michael Clarke (or both!) get a bowl today.

7.30 pm, Toss: Tails was the call, and it comes down tails. Mumbai Indians have won the toss and decided to bat first.

Sourav Ganguly: All games are important, but as we get to the final stages, it becomes more important. The pitch looks good, the ball comes on to the bat and 160-170 is achievable.

Ashok Dinda and Jesse Ryder have made their returns to the side. Marlon Samuels misses out.

Harbhajan Singh: It is a big game, we would like to continue with the momentum from the previous win. Hopefully we will get our opening combination right from this game onward. Don't know what to expect from the pitch.

Thisara Perera and Pragyan Ojha make it back to the playing 11 for the Mumbai Indians. Richard Levi has been benched tonight.

7.15 pm: Less than a week ago, we were treated to one of the more watched derbies in the world of sports, one in which the Manchester United were edged out by their 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City in the EPL. Today, we hope to be entertained by another one of its cricketing kind, the Maharashtra derby in the IPL as the Pune Warriors take on the Mumbai Indians at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. I am Suneer Chowdhary and will take you through this game that begins in roughly another 45 minutes. Toss happens in 15.

The last time these two teams met, Pune Warriors struggled to get to 129/9 in their 20 overs before going on to restrict Mumbai Indians to a paltry 101.

They almost stopped short of celebrating that maiden over like they had just got a wicket. And why not!

Harsh: "I'm not able to comprehend the team selection of mumbai indians. why are they playing so many bowlers when batting has been their major problem? Also they have not provided consistent oppurtunities to levi or davy jacobs!!"

It has been a surprise he hasn't so far.

Yes, I did, my apologies to all Ganguly fans! Who can ever forget that 'Bolt' after the KP wicket!

Nehra to Franklin, no run, pitched short of length, on the middle stump, he tries to play it through the leg side but it does not go too far.

5.3

Nehra to Franklin, no run, outside the off stump, on a length, punched to the off side and it goes to the fielder in the covers

5.4

Nehra to Franklin, FOUR, cute, cheeky or clever, you decide, but this gets him four! Pitched a tad short, Franklin sees the ball on to his bat, opens its face and it goes through the region where slips would have been.

5.5

Nehra to Franklin, FOUR, smashed it away for four! The delivery was shorter this time and much like how he lofted the six, he pulls it over the mid-wicket for a four this time

5.6

Nehra to Franklin, no run, a dot ball to end, outside the off stump, punched to the covers and that is the end of Powerplay overs too.

After a bit of a slow start, Mumbai Indians have got themselves to 42/0 in six overs, which gives them a good platform to build on. Murali Kartik is to bowl his second now.

6.6

Kartik to Tendulkar, 1 run, catch it was the call from everyone around but did Nehra not go for it? He was paddle sweeping, got an edge and it went to the left of Nehra, was in the air for a long time!

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's on again.

7.1

Kumar to Tendulkar, no run, on the middle stump, played it away, straight to short mid-wicket

7.2

Kumar to Tendulkar, 1 run, dabbed on the off stump, they are off for a quick single, the bowler ran, picked it up well and threw the stumps down at the striker's end, but the batsman was in.

50-run stand for the first wicket. Third one between them.

7.3

Kumar to Franklin, no run, outside the off-stump, the ball keeps low and Franklin pushes it to the short cover

7.4

Kumar to Franklin, OUT, top-edge and caught! Franklin tried to pull it away, it was not too short and it goes up, behind the bowler and the fielder at long-on comes in to take that easily.

8.5

Clarke to Sharma, no run, outside the off stump, good length, almost flicks it back to the bowler

8.6

Clarke to Sharma, OUT, run-out! There was a huge appeal for an lbw, Sharma wanted to go for a run in the mean time, Tendulkar was having none of it and the fielder at short third-man throws it to the wicket-keeper, Uthappa removes the bails and Sharma's rather short stay at the crease has ended.

9.1

Kartik to Tendulkar, 5 wides, that is down the leg side, it did not spin and it has gone for four wides

9.1

Kartik to Tendulkar, FOUR, this time it will be four off the bat for Tendulkar! He tried to adjust the line by bowling on the middle stump, paddle sweeps it through the fine-leg region for four

10.2

Clarke to Peterson, no run, outside the off stump, quicker one, tries to cut it but it goes to the fielder at short third-man. Nehra fields.

10.3

Clarke to Peterson, 2 runs, another one of those dabs, to Nehra and a poor throw misses the wicket-keeper, to go for an overthrow.

10.4

Clarke to Peterson, 1 run, down the pitch, pushed to the off side and they are off for a quick single. A direct hit would have been interesting.

10.5

Clarke to Tendulkar, 1 run, slows it down a little, tries to paddle sweep it, but does not get it to the middle of the bat, goes to Nehra.

10.6

Clarke to Peterson, 1 run, cut it away to the point region where Ganguly isn't able to stop it, but the single was always on and that is all that they get.

Ashish Nehra is on now. He had conceded 14 in his first.

11.1

Nehra to Peterson, no run, outside the off stump, pushed to the point region and it goes quickly to the fielder, nothing for Peterson.

11.2

Nehra to Peterson, 1 bye, goes down the pitch, tries to pull it away, misses and so does the wicket-keeper, they are off for a bye. The fielding has been scratchy from Pune so far, but no drops. Yet anyway.

11.3

Nehra to Tendulkar, 1 run, on the middle stump, punched through the covers for a single, he had opened the bat there.

11.4

Dinda to Karthik, 1 no ball, slower one, tries to sweep it and hits only the pads, but it is a no-ball, free-hit!

18.4

Dinda to Karthik, 1 run, full-toss, wanted to swing it away and hits the inside edge of the bat, gets only a single to deep mid-wicket

18.5

Dinda to Malinga, FOUR, and now Malinga gets a four, would you believe it! He wanted to slog it over the mid-wicket and it gets an inside-edge, through the gap between short fine-leg and square-leg, no fine-leg in place

18.6

Dinda to Malinga, SIX, slower ball and that is a SIX! Finally a shade of that thing they usually call momentum! Slower ball and Malinga came down and smacked it over long-on for a biggie...

End of over 19 (17 runs) Mumbai Indians 116/7 (RR: 6.10)
SL Malinga    13* (12b 1x4 1x6)      AB Dinda    4-1-34-1
KD Karthik    16* (19b 1x4)      WD Parnell    3-0-14-0

That over helps Mumbai a hint of some respectability. Can they get another?

19.1

Parnell to Karthik, 1 run, tries to paddle sweep it away, gets one that is outside the off stump, gets an outside edge to third-man for a single.

19.2

Parnell to Malinga, no run, pitched right up and Malinga gets some bat on it, can only get it back to the bowler

19.3

Parnell to Malinga, 1 run, pitched right up yet again and it is drilled through the covers for a single

19.4

Parnell to Karthik, 1 run, OUT, pitched up to the bat and driven to the long-off, they took a single and Malinga wanted to go for the second, Karthik did not. It was a casual, but powerful throw to the striker's end from Smith in the deep and the bails are dislodged with the batsman well out!

SL Malinga run out 14 (15m 14b 1x4 1x6) SR: 100.00

19.5

Parnell to Ojha, 1 run, pitched up, gets an inside edge, goes to fine-leg for a single. Karthik will play the last ball of what has been one of the better T20 spells.

19.6

Parnell to Karthik, OUT, out, run-out! Outside the off stump, wanted to drive, missed, they went for the bye and Uthappa has thrown the stumps down direct. Mumbai have ended on 120/9

PP Ojha run out 1 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Mumbai Indians have not got to a score they would have liked, especially after being 49/0 in seven overs. It was a combination of a slow track and some good bowling from Pune, Nehra conceded 14 off his first over and then ended with figures of 2/19 in his four. Bhuvneshwar Kumar ended on 2/9 in his three and Parnell did not get a wicket but conceded only 18 in his four.

Ashish Nehra, in his interview, has admitted that it is a slow pitch, which will turn and grip. Mumbai Indians have three spinners in their ranks, so some hope for them. Another factor they could look at is the last game between the two sides, when Pune got to a similar score and then defended it well! Still the Warriors will be the favourites here.

End of over 20 (4 runs) Mumbai Indians 120/9
KD Karthik    18* (22b 1x4)      WD Parnell    4-0-18-0
     AB Dinda    4-1-34-1
