Indian Premier League - 49th match

Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings

Mumbai Indians won by 2 wickets (with 0 balls remaining)

Faf du Plessis and M Vijay will open for Chennai Super Kings. Robin Peterson to open the bowling for Mumbai Indians, left-arm spin from round the wicket.

3.50 pm Bhupesh: "CSK is doing mistake again and again by retaining out-of-form M Vijay and Ravindra Jadeja...there are far better players than these guys in the squad."

Vijay: "5/6 Indian players for Mumbai have represented India for quite sometime. No wonder they are in top of the league inspite of regular changes in foreign players."

Ramprashad: "The saying "You gain somewhere and loose elsewhere" is 100% true. I think CSK bought Faf just for $50000. CSK spent more than $2M on Jadeja!"

Toss, 3.30 Everyone is fit, says Harbhajan Singh. So might we see Kieron Pollard back in Mumbai's XI? What about Herschelle Gibbs?

Harbhajan's won the toss and after a moment's hesitation he says Mumbai will bowl first. MS Dhoni wanted to bowl as well. Both captains seem unsure of how the pitch will play. Dhoni says he and Suresh Raina have some fitness issues but both are playing.

Chennai Super Kings are unchanged from the XI that beat Deccan Chargers. Mumbai Indians have made two changes, I think. Left arm medium-pacer RP Singh comes in for left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. And Dwayne Smith is playing, I think. Confirmation shortly ...

Dwayne Smith is making his season debut, in the middle order. Thisara Perera misses out. So three of Mumbai's overseas players are allrounders - Franklin, smith and Peterson. The other is Malinga of course. The bowling options in that XI are numerous - Munaf, Malinga, RP Singh, Harbhajan, Peterson, Smith and Franklin.

3.15 pm Good afternoon, and welcome to our ball-by-ball coverage of the first of two games on Sunday, Mumbai Indians v Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium. It's No. 3 v No. 4. Remember, the top four teams at the end of the league stage qualify for the play-offs, but the top three qualify for the Champions League later this year. Big bucks at stake.

Mumbai Indians are fighting to keep their spot and move closer to Kolkata Knight Riders at No. 2, while Super Kings are aiming to displace the hosts from No. 3 today.

It's a sunny day in Mumbai. The kind of sunlight that makes you squint. It's humid as well. Win toss and bat, I'd say, just to avoid fielding in that heat. For the greater common good.

Mumbai Indians' batting, however, had stuttered and sputtered through this tournament and their No. 3 position is almost entirely down to their bowlers. They defended 120 in their previous game, 120. Super Kings have problems too, both departments have been patchy and they've scraped their way here. Their fielding, however, is excellent. They too won their previous match, a scratchy affair against Deccan Chargers.

The keeper comes up to the stumps. Karthik: "It might just work to CSK's advantage that they only have 1 home left game - the slow pitch in Chennai hasn't worked well for the batting this year."

2.5
