Indian Premier League - 65th match

Mumbai Indians v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 32 runs

Mumbai Indians have finished huddling in the outfield. Gautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum to open for Knight Riders. Munaf with the new ball for Mumbai Indians, I can't see a plot in his hand, Sleepin' Hunter.

One slip in place as Munaf strides in from over the wicket to the left-hander. The keeper is standing up to his stumps to keep Gambhir in his crease.

Tim: "Well I was sure Munaf Patel had played his last IPL game last game. He has been dispatched to all parts time and time again. I can't see him being treated any better in this game either. Big mistake to pick him." not to forget he bowled two very good overs before losing the plot. Maybe he won't lose it today.

"Maybe he has not read the plot at all," says Sleepin' Hunter.

7.40 pm Both Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders have only two games remaining. So whoever drops points tonight will need to win their last game - finishing on 18 and 17 points will not cut it without bringing net run-rate into play. If Mumbai Indians win, though, they and Delhi Daredevils will take the top two spots irrespective of other results.

Yusuf Pathan has been the elephant in Knight Riders' middle-order. A $2.1 million fee and he's done very little. That Knight Riders are in this position is credit to Gambhir and the bowlers.

Mumbai Indians have also been quite lucky, or tenacious if you must. Five of their nine wins have been achieved in the final over, some of them from almost hopeless situations.

Toss, 7.30 pm The previous five matches at the Wankhede have been won by the chasing team, so I wonder if the captain that wins the toss will chase.

Gautam Gambhir has said that Shakib Al Hasan and Iqbal Abdulla have replaced Marchant de Lange and Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Harbhajan has won the toss and Mumbai Indians will bowl. So he has decided to chase. Harbhajan says he doesn't really know what to expect from this pitch. Mumbai Indians are unchanged.

Gambhir says he would have batted first anyway, despite the record being in favour of chasing at Wankhede. His reasoning is that he has three spinners - Narine, Shakib and Abdulla - so they could be more effective as the game progresses.

Manasvi: "KKR can be said to be going in with a 5 spin attack - Narine, Shakib, Abdulla, Y. Pathan and Bhatia (whose pace is the same as that of Kumble in his earlier days)"

7.20 pm Good evening, and welcome to our ball-by-ball coverage of the 65th match of the IPL. It's between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. No. 3 v No. 2. The stakes are high for today's contest. The winner will become the second team, after Delhi Daredevils, to secure a spot in the playoffs, leaving the rest to scrap for the last two places.

Take a look at our points table to see how the teams stand, and if you're trying to work out what each team must do, S Rajesh has simplified that for you.

Mumbai Indians have won their last two matches, while Kolkata Knight Riders have lost their previous two games. One of those matches was against each other. Mumbai Indians, however, have lost three out of seven games at home. This is their final league game at home.

0.1

Patel to Gambhir, FOUR, and he stays in his crease and gracefully drives a full length ball between the stumps at the bowler's end and the non-striker, sublime start for KRR

0.2

Patel to Gambhir, no run, now he tries to cut one that is too close to off stump and bottom edges into the ground towards first slip

0.3

Patel to Gambhir, 1 run, steered from the crease to third man

The wicketkeeper, Dinesh Karthik, stays up for McCullum as well.

0.4

Patel to McCullum, no run, good length around off stump, McCullum gets behind the line and defends

0.5

Patel to McCullum, no run, played off the back foot to the fielder at cover point

0.6

Patel to McCullum, 1 run, on a good length just outside off, McCullum cuts off the back foot and plays to third man

So a clear ploy from Mumbai Indians to have Karthik standing up to the stumps in that over, they don't want Gambhir and McCullum to have happy feet.

End of over 1 (6 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
BB McCullum    1* (3b)      MM Patel    1-0-6-0
G Gambhir    5* (3b 1x4)

The left-armer RP Singh from over the wicket to the right-hander.

1.1

Singh to McCullum, no run, good length ball angles across McCullum before bending back off the pitch, he gets cramped for room as he cuts towards point

1.2

Singh to McCullum, OUT, he's been given lbw even though he is a couple of steps outside his crease. I'll have to look at replays to be convinced about that one. McCullum took a couple of steps out and tried to play towards square leg. He missed and was hit on the pad. The batsmen were running a leg bye when the umpire raised the finger. McCullum was just too far down the pitch, in my opinion. The line may have been alright, but the height? Replays show the ball pitching outside leg stump as well. Might have missed off because of the angle. Terrible decision from Subroto Das.

BB McCullum lbw b Singh 1 (4m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

Kallis is the new batsman.

1.3

Singh to Kallis, OUT, RP Singh has demolished off stump, terrific ball first up, no doubt about that dismissal. It pitched on a good length around middle and off, angling across the right-hander from over the wicket. Kallis shaped to play from his crease and prodded at the ball with a gap between bat and pad. RP got the ball to straighten off the pitch and threaded it through the bat-pad gap, hitting the top of off stump

JH Kallis b Singh 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

1.4

Singh to Tiwary, 1 run, Tiwary stays in his crease and steers the short of a length ball towards third man

1.5

Singh to Gambhir, no run, driven on the front foot to mid-off

1.6

Singh to Gambhir, FOUR, strays on to the pads and Gambhir glances it between the keeper and Munaf at short fine leg for the innings' second boundary. Quite a bit has happened between the first and second

End of over 2 (5 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 11/2 (RR: 5.50)

2.2

Patel to Tiwary, 1 run, steered towards third man

2.3

Patel to Gambhir, no run, defended from the crease towards the bowler

2.4

Patel to Gambhir, no run, Gambhir stays back and tries to steer the ball fine past the keeper to third man, thought I heard a noise there but no real reaction from Mumbai's players after Karthik fails to take it. Replays show he did edge it, a thick edge. A tough one to take when the keeper is standing up to the stumps

2.5

Patel to Gambhir, no run, played off the back foot towards point

2.6

Patel to Gambhir, no run, Gambhis swings towards midwicket but mis-times the ball

3.3

Singh to Tiwary, 1 run, RP slants it across the right-hander this time and Tiwary gets an outside edge that goes on the bounce to first slip, Rohit throws at the bowler's end and concedes an overthrow

3.4

Singh to Gambhir, SIX, dropped by Tendulkar on the third man boundary. There was width outside off and Gambhir slashed hard, carving the ball towards the third man boundary. Tendulkar ran to his right and was awkwardly balanced on the edge of play. The ball hit his hands and went over the rope

3.5

Singh to Gambhir, 1 wide, that's a bit high and much too wide outside off stump

3.5

Singh to Gambhir, no run, played off the back foot on the off side

3.6

Singh to Gambhir, 2 runs, strays on to middle and leg stump, Gambhir uses the angle to flick through midwicket

As if Knight Riders hadn't had a torrid start already, here's Malinga, from over the wicket.

Malinga to Tiwary, no run, Tiwary lunges on to the front foot in vain, he gets beaten by the outswinger that is pitched on a perfect length

Madan: "rarest of happenings.... Kallis gone for golden duck... Sachin dropping a catch.. what else this match contains??"

4.4

Malinga to Tiwary, 1 run, short of a length and at the body, Tiwary jumps up to fend the ball down on the leg side

4.5

Malinga to Gambhir, 1 run, length ball outside off stump, Gambhir stays on the back foot and steers to third man

4.6

Malinga to Tiwary, 1 run, fuller length on middle, Tiwary flicks towards fine leg

End of over 5 (3 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 25/2 (RR: 5.00)

Malinga to Bhatia, OUT, caught, Karthik's come sprinting across and snatched the ball out of RP Singh's hands. RP's standing there with his hands on his hips. But Karthik's taken the catch. Bhatia slogged at a slower ball and mis-timed it high in the air towards square leg. RP Singh came running in from the boundary, keeping his eyes on the ball. The wicketkeeper Karthik was also going for the catch and just before the ball could fall into RP's hands, Karthik's gloves came into view and he caught it. RP was not pleased and Karthik said sorry. Munaf was the peacemaker

R Bhatia c †Karthik b Malinga 12 (17m 7b 2x4 0x6) SR: 171.42

18.5

Malinga to Pathan, 1 run, good length and straight, Yusuf defends towards cover and runs

18.6

Malinga to Narine, 1 wide, the yorker is down leg side, Narine shuffles out of the way

18.6

Malinga to Narine, FOUR, shot! Narine jams his bat down at a full ball outside off and opens the face deftly, he's placed it behind point and in front of third man

End of over 19 (8 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 133/7 (RR: 7.00)
SP Narine    5* (2b 1x4)      SL Malinga    4-0-32-1
YK Pathan    20* (19b 2x4)      RP Singh    3-0-28-2

Right, what can Yusuf do in this final over? RP will bowl it.

19.1

Singh to Pathan, 2 leg byes, Yusuf tries to swing the first ball behind square, it was on a length and pitched outside leg stump. Yusuf missed but the ball thudded into the pad and went behind square. Yusuf wanted to keep strike and came back for the second. He was just home before Karthik broke the stumps, safe by a frame.

19.2

Singh to Pathan, 1 run, full ball outside off, Yusuf drives to long-on where Rohit fields

Arinawe: "This is only the second time Narine is batting in this IPL! The batting has been that bad today."

19.3

Singh to Narine, no run, he's beaten, a short ball and Narine tries to pull, another ball Yusuf is off strike for

19.4

Singh to Narine, FOUR, Narine backs away towards leg and slogs, head all over the place, bat flailing. He makes contact though, a handy outside edge too for KKR. The ball races to the third man boundary

19.5

Singh to Narine, no run, he's beaten again, they've got to try and steal a leg by surely? But they don't try. Narine slogged at a good length ball and missed. Karthik would have probably run out a batsman but they had to try and get Yusuf on strike?

19.6

Singh to Narine, no run, Narine's beaten again outside off, swinging wildly, Karthik collects and runs forward to prevent the bye. Again the batsmen don't attempt to steal a bye. Odd, odd cricket.

9.45 pm So Mumbai Indians need 141 to seal a place in the top two in the league. Batting wasn't easy for Knight Riders on this pitch, the Mumbai Indians seamers used the conditions well. Knight Riders have banked on spin though, they have plenty of them.

End of over 20 (7 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 140/7
SP Narine    9* (6b 2x4)      RP Singh    4-0-33-2
YK Pathan    21* (21b 2x4)      SL Malinga    4-0-32-1
