Indian Premier League - 70th match

Pune Warriors v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 34 runs

Brendon McCullum and Gautam Gambhir will open the innings, Ashish Nehra takes the new ball.

And yes, surprisingly, Tamim Iqbal continues to miss out. Unless he is not fit, I am surprised that on one hand we have a player returning back just days after getting married, flying all those miles back for an inconsequential tie and on the other, Tamim, after all those half-centuries in the Asia Cup, continues to miss out. 16 games without an opportunity is as bad as it can get.

7.30 pm Gambhir wins the toss and KKR will have a bat

KKR are playing three spinners again

Steven Smith and Angelo Mathews are unfit. Michael Clarke is back after his wedding, and "looking happy," Ganguly says. Wayne Parnell is back as well

Gautam Gambhir says that this is a much more important game for his side than it is for Pune

7.20 pm Welcome to our coverage of the 70th game of the IPL season, between Pune Warriors and Kolkata Knight Riders in Pune

The first game earlier between these two sides was the most hyped this season, with Sourav Ganguly taking on his erstwhile franchise at his home ground, Eden Gardens.

Warriors have lost their last eight games. Can they break the streak today? A ninth loss will make it an IPL record.

Kolkata have the chance to do what they could not do previous season, avoid the eliminator. A win today will take them to second place, and keep them there

Here is the preview

satyajeet: "The three spinners of KKR must be scratching their hands and waiting for their turn to bowl on this low slow dead pitch (did i miss any adjective)."

And coming on to the bat and easy to bat on and run-scoring. At least these two would be thinking that way!

15.1

Nehra to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, outside the off stump, pitched right up to the bat, driven to point for no run

15.2

Nehra to Shakib Al Hasan, 2 runs, pitched right up to the bat, on the off stump, slogged it away to wide long-on, comes back for the second

Time-Out time, Parnell is now in

16.1

Parnell to McCullum, OUT, outside the off stump, wants to play it over the in-field, but gets no timing on it and he can only drill it straight to extra-cover, who is right back on the circle

BB McCullum c Ryder b Parnell 41 (73m 43b 5x4 0x6) SR: 95.34

Well-made 41 from McCullum, but not the best time to get out. 23 balls to go now, Tiwary walks out.

16.2

Parnell to Tiwary, no run, gives himself room and tries to slog it over the mid-wicket, mistimes it to the leg side

16.3

Parnell to Tiwary, 1 run, pitched up, outside the off stump, driven to the deep fielder at the covers

16.5

Parnell to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, pitched up, driven down the ground, Clarke fields well from mid-off but they are through for a single

MK Tiwary    3* (3b)      WD Parnell    3-0-9-2
Shakib Al Hasan    40* (27b 3x4 2x6)      A Nehra    3-0-25-0

17.4

Kumar to Tiwary, 1 run, full pitched, outside the off stump, driven to extra-cover for a single

17.5

Kumar to Shakib Al Hasan, OUT, yorker, on off stump, missed, bowled! For a change, this was a quicker one from Kumar, tries to dig the ball away but Shakib fails in that endeavour, cleaned up

Shakib Al Hasan b Kumar 42 (44m 30b 3x4 2x6) SR: 140.00

A very good innings from Shakib this, a strike-rate of 140 for his 42 with the side under pressure on a very difficult pitch. Yusuf Pathan is at six.

17.6

Kumar to Pathan, no run, shorter ball, slower too, wants to pull it away, gets it to the mid-wicket fielder on the bounce

End of over 18 (4 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 117/4 (RR: 6.50)
YK Pathan    0* (1b)      B Kumar    4-0-23-1
MK Tiwary    5* (5b)      WD Parnell    3-0-9-2

18.1

Nehra to Tiwary, 1 run, dropped? Decent attempt at mid-wicket, and not too many would have caught that one, jumping fully up, to that powerfully flicked stroke, Ganguly the fielder

18.2

Nehra to Pathan, FOUR, pitched up on the off stump, driven to long-off, it was running away but well fielded by Majumdar , throws it to the fielder running from long-on...third umpire called in to look at it and the foot was touching the boundary

18.3

Nehra to Pathan, no run, on the leg stump, pitched right up, tries to flick it away, misses, hits the pads

18.4

Nehra to Pathan, FOUR, yet again, on the pads, flicked away to the fence for a four, the fine-leg was up in the circle

18.5

Nehra to Pathan, 1 run, full-toss on the middle stump, driven straight back, as straight as it could go, hitting the non-striker's stumps and they can get only a single. Pathan would think a boundary was stolen there

18.6

Nehra to Tiwary, no run, wants to hoick away a length ball from outside the off stump, misses

End of over 19 (10 runs) Kolkata Knight Riders 127/4 (RR: 6.68)
MK Tiwary    6* (7b)      A Nehra    4-0-35-0
YK Pathan    9* (5b 2x4)      B Kumar    4-0-23-1

19.1

Parnell to Pathan, no run, on the off stump, wanted to go over the top but misses the ball completely, it was a quicker one as well

19.2

Parnell to Pathan, 2 runs, pitched up yet again, outside the off stump and this time he connects, but not off the middle, goes to mid-wicket for a couple of run

19.3

Parnell to Pathan, 1 run, yorker yet again, quick too, 142.7 km/hr and he can only tap it away for a single

19.4

Parnell to Tiwary, 1 run, outside the off stump, pushed to the deep covers for a single, only four from the first four balls and not too many changes of pace

19.5

Parnell to Pathan, (no ball) 1 run, outside the off stump, pitched up to the bat, 141.6 km/hr, superb ball, but he over-steps and that is Free Hit for Tiwary

19.5

Parnell to Tiwary, 1 run, outside the off stump, fuller and driven to point for a single

19.6

Parnell to Pathan, 2 runs, yorker length yet again, taken on the full, tries to hit it over the top, toe end of the bat, to long-on where they come back for the second

Kolkata have got to 136/4 in 20 overs on a difficult track and for the second time in the day, I will stick my neck out and say that it looks to be par for this pitch. I was proved wrong by Warner in the first game!

Decent show with the bat after a very slow start, Shakib and McCullum scored 40s to get the Knight Riders to more than 130, after they were only 45/2 in 10. Parnell and Bhivneshwar Kumar were excellent and had combined figures of 1/41 in eight overs. Clarke bowled three good overs but was spanked in his fourth.

Back in 10 for the chase.
