Indian Premier League - 71st match

Deccan Chargers v Royal Challengers Bangalore

Deccan Chargers won by 9 runs

Game time. Shikhar Dhawan and Akshath Reddy are the Chargers openers. Zaheer Khan will open the bowling for Royal Challengers, from over the wicket.

Gareth: "It's hard to work out which is the biggest motivator: making it to the finals or avoiding the wooden spoon! I'm expecting a spirited fight from DC."

Dhoni Patel: "Not having to see Gayle play in the play-offs by seeing Deccan and CSK get lucky is just bad for IPL viewership no matter which team you support."

3.45 pm "Today CSK's luck factor is gonna be demystified, fingers crossed :). All CSK fans are supporting the Chargers," says CSK fan. It will be one of the luckiest back-door entries if Super Kings make it.

I'm looking forward to Dale Steyn v AB de Villiers, if that face-off should come to pass. Steyn has a score to settle, after de Villiers clobbered him for plenty the last time these two teams met. A fast bowler never forgets ...

"I dont understand why they talk abt luck. CSK finished their games with 17 scored. If others struggle to cross their points, how can that be called as 'luck'?" asks Naufal. When you need three results to go your way, and all three do, then I'd say that's quite lucky. It's not luck when you don't leave your qualification chances in other teams hands, like Daredevils and Knight Riders have done.

Toss, 3.30 pm "Don't want to finish last, also knocking a big side out of the tournament is an incentive," Kumar Sangakkara says. If Chargers win today, they will pass Pune Warriors and finish eighth.

Virat Kohli has won the toss and Royal Challengers will bowl. Sangakkara says he's happy to bat. No changes for Royal Challengers, so Chris Gayle is fit and playing. Chargers have brought back Sangakkara, so Chris Lynn misses out. That's their only change.

Chargers are kingmakers today. Win or lose, they'll knock one team out.

3.15 pm Good afternoon and welcome to the day I thought would never come: the last day of IPL 2012's league games. Deccan Chargers have already done Chennai Super Kings a huge favour by eliminating Rajasthan Royals. A second of three results Super Kings desperately need to stay in contention for the playoffs also went their way on Saturday, when Delhi Daredevils beat Kings XI Punjab, knocking them out of the tournament. Now Super Kings need Chargers to do them another good turn and beat Royal Challengers Bangalore.

It's as simple as that. If Chargers beat Royal Challengers, Super Kings will qualify in fourth position by virtue of net run-rate. If Royal Challengers win, they will qualify for the playoffs, and will await the outcome of Royals v Mumbai Indians to find out if they are third or fourth. Mumbai Indians are already through.

The toss will occur shortly. There were some unconfirmed reports of Chris Gayle having a hamstring niggle, but he was out on the field ahead of the game, batting with one pad on, so we'll find out soon enough ...

Satish: "This is in response to the answer for Naufal comment ... "It's nothing to do with leaving your qualification chances in other teams hands.,it's with the schedule ..if CSK were to play today as per schedule .,it would have been the same case for RCB" But if ifs and buts were pots and pans .....

0.6

Khan to Dhawan, OUT, Has Dhawan been bowled? He has been. No one noticed at first. Zaheer's delivery pitched on a good length outside off and burst between Dhawan's bat and pad. It clipped the pad so Zaheer appealed for an lbw. Umpire Taufel said not out and began to hand Zaheer his cap at the end of the over. Then one of the fielders pointed to the fallen off bail. Replays show the ball had just kissed the top of the bail as it passed to the keeper. the lightest of touches. Gayle was the fielder who noticed the bail had fallen

5.30 pm Royal Challengers will be pumped by this bowling effort. It has been their weakness through the tournament but today they have bowled well and conceded only 132. The pitch is on the slower side but RCB will back their batsmen - Gayle, AB, Kohli, Dilshan and the rest - to chase this down and take them through to the playoffs.

Duminy was the only batsman to find fluency on this wicket and even he took a long time to get going.

You could spend the innings break reading season reviews of Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors.

Lots of people are asking if Vinay Kumar will be on a hat-trick the next time he bowls? He will not. A hat-trick has to be taken in the same match. It can span across more than one over, or more than one innings in case of a Test match, but it has to be within the same match.

Rishieee: "Gayle was holding his back since he took the catch. Will he come to open? Lets wait and watch." He was indeed. But it did not seem major. We won't have to wait long to find out.
