Indian Premier League - 1st qualifying match

Delhi Daredevils v Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 18 runs

Players are out in the middle, umpires walking out too, past the IPL trophy, scoop the ball out from the cup does Billy Doctrove. Brendon McCullum and captain Gautam Gambhir walk out to the middle.

7.55 pm: Vivek: "Sehwag has made a good decision in playing three quicks who can bowl 145+ due to below reaons: 1. Yusuf is not in best of form and he would find hard to hit the likes of Morkel, Aaron and Yadav. (Would find easy to hit Irfan if got chance :)) 2. Pune's pitch is a bit tricky and would help bowlers who can bang it short and generate some raw pace, take example of Dinda who was instrumental for PWI in Pune."

Raj: "Just to add to Vivek - Most KKR players can play spin really well, e.g Gambhir so a pace would be harder to negotiate as long as young Delhi pacers can control line and length."

Pan: "I think they should have retained Russell. He is a handy batsman and is more consistent than Ross Taylor."

Russell did get clobbered in Dharamsala, though.

Rohit: "The whole season we talk about home and away matches, but when it comes to playoffs both teams are playing at a neutral venue with neither side home fans getting a chance to root for their team. I guess IPL needs to learn bigtime from NBA."

It is an interesting argument for and against, the venue for the Champions League final in soccer does get decided before hand, while there is also an issue with home and away playoffs increasing the number of matches.

7.45 pm:Thanks George, so an interesting set of tactics, the spin and slow bowlers of Kolkata against the pacey combination from Delhi, on a track which is purportedly expected to assist the former. 15 minutes away from the start.

7.40 pm Sujan: "I think Delhi got it all wrong by not playing another spinner. But I hope they prove me wrong as I'm a Daredevils fan...." Delhi are playing only one specialist spinner in left-armer Pawan Negi, while Kolkata have three. Delhi have some serious pace, though, which Kolkata lack.

Over to Suneer, who will be your commentator for the start of the game ...

Toss, 7.30 pm Virender Sehwag is playing. "I'm feeling good," he says. "I've been looking forward to this match for two years."

Sehwag flips, Gambhir calls tails, it is a tail. Kolkata Knight Riders are batting first. "We have three quality spinners," says Gambhir. He says it doesn't matter what sort of a pitch it is, he has a lot of faith in his spinners. Kolkata Knight Riders have made one change, Manoj Tiwary has been left out for Laxmi Ratan Shukla. Big toss to win for Gambhir.

Ali: "Not sure why Eoin Morgan wasnt picked for any game. He is a quality batsman." Besides, he's back in England playing county cricket now.

Delhi Daredevils have made two changes to the side that beat Kings XI Punjab. Their batting is much stronger with Sehwag and Ross Taylor coming into the XI, for Andre Russell and Unmukt Chand.

7.00 pm Good evening, and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the first Qualifier in IPL 2012. The two best teams of the tournament - Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders - face off in Pune, they are playing for a spot in the final. Tonight's winner will have a nice four-day break before the final on May 27. The loser need not despair, however, because they have a second shot at qualifying for the final, by facing the winner of the Eliminator, which is between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

I wonder if Virender Sehwag has recovered from his illness. Delhi Daredevils were without their regular captain for the last two league games, and Ross Taylor missed the last one as well. Eric Simons, Delhi's coach, said they would have recovered from the flu. Harsha Bhogle, however, was saying that Sehwag hadn't looked well at all the last couple of days.

Abhishek Purohit previewed this game and billed it as a battle between two strategies - Daredevils have a strong pace attack, while Knight Riders bank on spin. The Sehwag v Narine contest, should it come to pass, could be delightful.

G Gambhir run out 32 (16b 3x4 2x6) SR: 200.00
