Dravid happy to have Watson at the start

Rahul Dravid has said Rajasthan Royals will be bolstered by the presence of Shane Watson, who is expected to join the team in time for the side's second game against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8.

"Watson brings a lot of quality to the team," Dravid told the Times of India. "Last year, we missed him for the first eight or nine games. This time, we are lucky that way. If we can play to our potential, we should be able to do pretty well." He also added that Watson may be promoted to open the innings with Ajinkya Rahane.

Rajasthan had a poor campaign last year, finishing seventh in the points table. Royals coach Paddy Upton was upbeat about the prospects of the squad in the IPL this season. "It is essential to work out a fine balance between team and individual performance," Upton told the Hindu. "Our focus is to play at our level best and deliver top performances throughout the season. We as a team provide space to our players to take their own decisions, judge their performance, and together we all help each other to execute these decisions on field. We try to not only improve the sporting skills in our players, but also help and groom their overall personality."

Rajasthan Royals' fast bowler Shaun Tait, who played in six games last season, picking up six wickets at 25.16, alluded to where they had gone wrong, "We were not up to the mark in the death overs during the previous season. I enjoy bowling at the death but plans work out at times, and some times they don't. I would again enjoy bowling at death.

"We hope for a top-four finish this time. We have worked on a few grey areas like death bowling and have few more options in attack. The likes of James Faulkner would lend us more bowling strength. We have a good relationship and we mix it up well and help each other."

Tait, who possesses plenty of pace but sometimes loses accuracy as a result, acknowledged that he is working on the issue. "I know I was erratic at times, but I have worked on this. My foot was popping out of the bowling crease, but recently I had improved in the Big Bash and Bangladesh Premier league. I plan to bowl a lot straighter and keep things simple."

watson is gonna be a BIG PAIN for oppositions

  • gracegift on April 1, 2013, 9:27 GMT

The opening combo will depend on the pitch and opposition attack. If it's coming on, then Watto and Rahane, else Dravid and probably Hodge. Faulkner is a good death overs bowler. I think he should play most games along side Watson, Tait and Hodge as the foreign picks. Halla Bol!

The surprise package for RR is Kushal Perera!! This young dynamite from Sri Lanka will show his presence with a stamp of authority. He sent the Aussie bowlers to cleaners in Australia and then the Bangladeshis in SL. Watch-out future!!!

Rahane, Watson, Dravid, Hodge/Owais, Menaria/Binny/Sachin Baby(Baby can be a trumpcard), Cooper, Yagnik?Goswami, Tait/Faulkner/Edwards/Badree, Sreesanth, Harmeet, Trivedi/Pankaj/Chandila.. The number options are clearly good.. They can make it big if the key members perform well.. Rahane, Watson, Sreesanth, Cooper, Harmeet all can do it, it will be great season for them ahead.. Good luck RR..

This was my best team since ipl 1 and back then it was all because of WARNIE but eventually I grew to like the team as a whole cause truth be told its the only team in the entire league rest are just a group 3 or 4 great players who must perform or they are doomed. The whole RRL team has to chip in to get victories and 2nd best record at home in all ipls just shows this.5 years ago I told that this team will win the 1st ever ipl they called me crazy(they did). I say they will win ipl6 call me what ever you want! Faulkner is the dark horse whose all round ability will be noticed by the world now.Ashes prospect for sure. Watto will finally bowl enough said.

As an opener, Watson will be as effective as CHRIS GAYLE. He will win at least 7 matches single handedly for Rajasthan Royals.

  • Pathiyal on March 31, 2013, 8:46 GMT

Watson with Rahul Dravid would be ideal openers for them. Rahane to be one down.

  • on March 31, 2013, 7:09 GMT

rajasthan royals is one team which gives maximum output for the money spent by owners. dravd watson, rehane tait should form the think tank and come out with steady performances. all the best.

  • Mi_Punekar on March 31, 2013, 6:08 GMT

Harmeet Singh has a potential to rock the tournament.... Dravid just needs to show faith on him. They have solid batting strength just their bowling needs to match the performance...Since Hogg was not so impressive last season, Harmeet & chandila should get a chance Shresanth should lead the seam attack with support by Tait/Edwards Faulkner/Kooper can play all rounder role. Since all their batsmen are specialist ones (can not do a bowling)... Watson need to support with the bowling in case of any bowlers bad day!

  • cricketanand12 on March 31, 2013, 5:46 GMT

Rahul Dravid is a great batsman. But he isn't the perfect choice in t20s.Yet he can score heaps of boundaries because he is quite cheeky. My line up will neverhave watson until he can't bow.l know that he can hit sixes anywhere in the world, but we already have batsmen like shah, hodge. So, watson is only useful if he can bowl. My line up wll be: Rahane,Jammy,Samson,Shah,Baby,Binny,Hodge,Badree/Faulkner,Harmeet,Sreesanth,Shaun Tait/Edwards. You can make 200 runs. But you always need a good batting line up to defend the total.A death -over bowler must be terribly fast.

  • Teachers on March 31, 2013, 5:32 GMT

Watson needs to try and bowl in the IPL, 4 overs an innings will suit him as he prepares his body for the Ashes. He also needs to make runs, even in this format. Let us not forget, Watson will have little chance to hone his 5 day cricket skills prior to going to the Ashes (provided he is selected), so the IPL and Champions League are his main opportunities to get back to some sort of form and fitness if he is to be selected as an all rounder for the Ashes.

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on March 30, 2013, 22:37 GMT

Dravid will be more effective as an opener because he is not a muscle player to hit sixers at will towards the end of an inning. He is more of a touch and timing player. The field restrictions will make him extremely effective at the top of the order. Yes he did hit 3 consecutive sixers in his only t20 international. But he is more of a boundaries batsman. I hope he realizes his utility at the top of he order. Watson is a brute force who can hit sixers at any point in an inning.

  • hhillbumper on March 30, 2013, 19:46 GMT

what the bet that Watson will suddenly start bowling when there is money to be made?

  • Surajdon9 on March 30, 2013, 18:39 GMT

I think watson won't be going to bowl throughout the IPL...He need to open with Dravid followed By rahane...

rajastan Royala will win this year's IPL!!!

  • on March 30, 2013, 17:54 GMT

I ve been a great supporter of RR for all the seasons.....As far as Im concerned RR is the only IPL team trying to cultivate good Indian talent..... Yusuf Pathan,Ravindra Jadeja,Ajinkya Rahane..... all of them got international exposure and recognition thru RR only......Even Watson made a comeback into the national side after his good performances in the opening edition of IPL...Every year RR contributes atleast one player to the national team....Last year it was Ajinkya Rahane.....Hope der will be someone dis year too....

As Watson may not be available for the opening game against DD ...i hope this will be the RR eleven.. 1) Ajinkya Rahane 2) *Kusal Perera{W/K} 3)Rahul Dravid 4)Brad Hodge 5)Sachin Baby 6) James Faulkner 7)Stuart Binny 8)Harmeet Singh 9)Ajit Chandila 10)S Sreesanth 11)Shaun Tait

  • Edassery on March 30, 2013, 17:37 GMT

Shane Watson will definitely play well where the money is... i.e. IPL instead of playing with commitment for Australia

  • Baseball-Sucks on March 30, 2013, 17:35 GMT

If Rajasthan Royals needs to make an impact on IPL, they should open with Kusal Perera. He is "The New Sanath Jayasuriya" n in a terrific "explosive" form.

  • Mi_Punekar on March 30, 2013, 17:12 GMT

Maneria got enough chances so far...but could not impress much.... He cannot score at brisk rate.... Need to give chance to other youngsters like binny, baby

  • Pinarsh255 on March 30, 2013, 16:24 GMT

If Watson gets injured while bowling in the IPL then his test future will remain in forever doubt. It would be a shame if he misses ashes unfortunately. Of course, from Rajasthan Royals point of view he is a very key player. Dravid should open with Rahane, he can score more boundaries when the field is up and Watson should bat at no3. With Shah, Hodge and Menaria they have a good middle order.

  • xylo on March 30, 2013, 16:11 GMT

Dravid forgot to add a big caveat: If Watson is not injured.

  • sandeshsavratkar on March 30, 2013, 15:18 GMT

I think Dravid should kept himself at no. 3 since he has good record and should allow Watson and Rahane to open the innings for explosive opening. In case one of them failed early Dravid should join at no. 3 and will allow opener to continue in d same way as he started, this will not drop there run rate and runs will come easily.

He should play Hodge/Shah (prefer Hodge since he is in form of his life) rotationally as per requirement at no. 4. Simmilarly he should play Tait/Edwards in dis way and should pick Faulkner in all d games since he is only allrounder in d team and I'm not sure about Cooper's form.

If they pick team as I mentioned below they surely become team to beat in dis IPL with serious contenders for playoffs.

    My playing XI as per order: 1.Watson 2.Rahane 3.Dravid 4.Hodge/Shah 5. Menaria 6.S Binny 7.Yagnik/Goswami(wk) 8.Faulkner 9.Harmeet Singh 10.Trivedi/Sreesanth 12.Tait/Edwards.

  • on March 30, 2013, 15:04 GMT

F rajasthan royal want to strengthen their bowling and batting line up the should consider Afghanistan all rounder Mohmmad Nabi who played BPL last season and had picked up 18 wickets and scored about 200 runs for sylhet royal in just 13 game.

  • on March 30, 2013, 14:50 GMT

Good, That Watson and Rahane will open because Dravid slows it down in the top order. We need a quick start for lower order to catch up. Rock on Dravid! Show them what you got! RR supporter for life.

  • Narbavi on March 30, 2013, 14:42 GMT

I am surprised to see many indian fans not mention Harmeet's name, he was a star in the under 19 wc and he is the one for the future, this is the right platform for him to make it to the next stage!! Hope Dravid gives him a lot of games, this team is so damn exciting, only ipl team which fulfills the sole purpose of the ipl that is to promote the local talent!! Hope they finish in the top 4 atleast for the sake of Dravid!!

  • fah1 on March 30, 2013, 14:36 GMT

They should use Cooper as all rounder their XI and if Watson is not available Kushal Parera should replace him.

They don't have good Indian bowlers though Sreeshant and Harmit Singh should play as seamers.

Best of luck for Rahul Dravid ( My favorite player) for may be his last season as player

  • Narbavi on March 30, 2013, 14:29 GMT

Do not pick sreesanth, Trivedi would be better, pick cooper on slow pitches and tait on other pitches, play harmeet singh as the spinner, play both baby and binny and drop menaria, my team would be Dravid, Rahane, Watson, Hodge, Baby, Binny, Faulkner, Yagnik, Harmeet singh, Tait/cooper, Trivedi......42 yr old Tambe or menaria can be given a couple of games if baby or binny don't do well, same with sreesanth if trivedi doesn't do well!!

  • on March 30, 2013, 14:27 GMT

@santhakumar819: Quite good line up. But there are few gaps. My choice will be-

my playing xi 1.Rahane 2. Kusal Janith Perera (No Yagnik as Perera can do jaisurya act and is a better keeper) 3.watson 4.faulkner/Cooper 5.Dravid 6.Menaria 7. Binny 8.Ajit Chandila(No IPL team is complete without at least a spinner. Given the choice of top 4 overseas player based on their impact and balance in team Ajit is the man to go) 9.trivedi 10.sreeshanth 11.edwards(No tait as Edward can bat a bit).

  • Lion83 on March 30, 2013, 14:14 GMT

  • ram4crictheory on March 30, 2013, 12:57 GMT

RR is the team which reminds me of South Africa. South Africa was and to some extent is the only team which gives consistent performance even with lack of stars in the team. You can name a star in any team except for south africa (Amla and Steyn to some extent now), still south africa remains as an example of team effort as almost every player in the team will chip in the game with whatever he can do to win the game, when compared to other teams who are mainly dependent on their stars. RR might not be in the same league as South Africa in terms of winning it certainly has very close similarities. I certainly like to see such teams winning more often than hit out or get out teams winning. Good luck RR.

@Bublu Bhuyan and @Shubham Rai: Dravid was the 6th highest run getter last IPL. He has always had good seasons every year whether for Bangalore or Rajasthan. So Bublu: do not run your commentary without knowing any facts.

  • Baseball-Sucks on March 30, 2013, 12:07 GMT

Now The,Watson- Kusal Perera, opening pair will rock the IPL

  • ruvvy on March 30, 2013, 12:07 GMT

The problem is with their Indian Talent. They can't put 7 with any amount of confidence. What kind of planning is there at the backroom? This was the same problem with Deccan Chargers. I don't believe for a moment that there are better suited players for this format. They haven't worked hard enough to identify and recruit.

  • on March 30, 2013, 11:56 GMT

@Bublu Bhuyan: Please watch your stats before you speak. Rahul dravid has had a strike rate of above 82 in ODI's and in the last IPL, a strike rate of 108! Plus he was amongst the top 15 highest scroers in IPL Last year. Before making a statement against a great like RD, please get your facts correct

  • Mi_Punekar on March 30, 2013, 9:56 GMT

They just need to be consistent.... they don't have big names but each on of them have ability to win the match on their day Dravid and Pady Apton need to keep inspiring the team on & off the field. It seems this will be Dravid's last season as a player.... He deserves a title this year!

Harmeet sing can become find of the tournament.... Even Chandila should get some inspiration from his last seasons hat trick and deliver well.

This is the best chance for Rahane to prove his capabilities once again to retain his place in indian team and this seems a golden opportunity for shreesanth to make a comeback

James Faulkner & Kevon Cooper are very talented allrounders and really assets for a team... If Watson decided to bowl in IPL, then RR will have 3 good all-rounder in their kitty.

My best wishes are to RR team and Rahul :)

  • ajayyy on March 30, 2013, 9:44 GMT

Rajasthan Royals need not just consistency but for players to be used correctly at the appropriate time, they showed last year a huge capability with the bat and made some monstrous scores with great innings but the bowling was an on/off thing and you felt some days the bowlers never really turned up to bowl fully hearted. I hope they make improvements from the past year to make themselves more serious contenders.

  • on March 30, 2013, 9:29 GMT
