'I knew KKR wouldn't be able to stop me easily' - Smith

ESPNcricinfo staff
29

Dwayne Smith, with 62 off 45, helped Mumbai Indians arrest a slump by scoring a five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday. While he was disappointed not to stay on till the end after setting up the chase, Smith said, he was always confident of dealing with Knight Riders' bowlers.

"My message to myself was to go there, get in and do what I want; I knew they won't be able to stop me that easily," Smith told the IPL site after the match. "I am the kind of guy who believes in doing what I know best. Today I just thought I had to give my team a good start, and I did it."

Smith's innings included three fours and five sixes and, while he managed just 2 off 6 balls against Sunil Narine, he took apart Knight Riders' supporting spinners, Sachithra Senanayake and Iqbal Abdulla. He smacked 20 off 8 off Senanayake, and 31 off 19 from Abdulla.

He did not look to go after any bowler in particular, Smith said: "I did not target any bowler. My plan was to get as much as possible from any bowler bowling to me, apart from Sunil Narine, because he was the one who was taking the wickets for them.

"Eventually I gave away my wicket to him which was disappointing. I should have batted on and tried to get the side home."

Left-arm spinner Abdulla, playing his first game of the tournament, began with a testing over in which he conceded just one run, before being hit for six four times by Smith. Abudulla, who was the Under-23 Player of the IPL in 2011, was not too discouraged though. "I feel it was Dwayne Smith's day today," he said. "I had bowled the second over of the match, wherein Smith could score only one off me. There was even a small chance off the third ball that could have got him out, he was saved [from being bowled] just by an inch. I guess had we got that wicket, it would have been a different result."

The conditions, after the rain leading up to the match, had proved to be a bit difficult for Knight Riders' bowlers, Abdulla said. "The ball was getting wet just a bit and it was difficult to grip the ball. Apart from Sunil Narine, I guess Senanayake and myself could not extract as much spin from the wicket."

Still, the target of 160 was enough for the bowlers to work with, he said. "We were playing at home and we always had the confidence in our bowling. One-sixty was defendable on this wicket. It is just that we did not pick wickets at regular intervals."

McCullum has got to play in place of kallis next game, they need a dynamic no.3, McCullum is difference between 150 and 180 score

KKR are handicapped with two slow coaches: Kallis and Tiwary. If Kallis plays as a fast allrounder, then Tiwary needs to go in place of another local bat. In fact get Mc Cullum for Das also. Kallis, Mc Cullum, Morgan and Narine should be there with Yusuf as another spinner. And next season get some explosive local batsman and to bolster the middle order. KKR batting seems to end with Eoin Murugan.

Dwayne Smith should have been opening since the start of season. Remember last year when he didn't get much of a shot when he was asked to open near then end of season and got 87 not out chasing 163 v RR ? http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2012/engine/match/548377.html He has always been the best option because once he gets in he can go at serious rate much like Gayle, that is problem with Sachin and Ponting even if they get in they don't have ability to clear ropes and go at such speed. Great innings perfectly measured I hope to see many more for him in IPL because when he gets going he's one of best to watch as balls are sailing into the stands !

Well i have Suggestion... why dont MI try Bhajji opening with sachin?? they do support eachother..bhajji test hunderd was an inspiration from sachin.. ?? that wud be a gud try ...

Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky pointing should dropped because they are not playing well so they should be rested .MI have to give chance to Youngsters.....

In My point of view Mumbai Indians should select this team for the upcoming matches.

D.smith, A. Rayudu, R.sharma, Dinesh Kartik, James Franklin, K.Pollard, Jalaj Saxena, Surya Kumar yadav, Harbajhan, Malinga, Pragyan Ojha

  • simonviller on April 25, 2013, 15:37 GMT

Yes ! That Smith is not that good a batsman , or a regular member of the MI ,is the problem with the team today . Look at what the great batsmen of the team have done todate . One is as good as one does .

why did Kallis not bowl ?

Kallis's bowling was fundamental to KKR's success in the last IPL .....

Kallis was not simply a batting alrounder , who put in 4 overs...

    Kallis picked up wickets ...

I think Kallis needs to bowl 2-3 overs in the Middle ...

Narine was used up before the end... and you need Narine to bowl the 17th and 19th overs ...

  • on April 25, 2013, 14:23 GMT

replace kallis & give a chance to Ryan ten doeschat....bad luck for kkr that they dont have shakib currently :-(.I dont like the captaincy of gambhir..he is a good batsman but not a good captain..I think manoj tiwary should be the captain of kkr

That's his confidence towards his batting. Waiting for the upcoming matches whether he can deliver us same batting n confidence.

BOSS I know one thing that KKR's not only that man who is no more a Bolt in the wall, but now a just a mutton in the bone in the KKR Camp, who has lost the CORAL STRENGTH, that FINISHING TOUCH, talking about Yousuf Pathan is no ore a Match Winner but a burden, and so is their Capt. Gautam Gambhir who is too Over-confident but not clicking. But on the other hand MI in this match played proper cricket with heads on shoulders, thus deserves a win but Yes jolly good Days are numbered for KKR in short.

  • on April 25, 2013, 12:23 GMT

Tendulkar most over rated player in the history of cricket , always played for his own records , takes enormous time to get settled , that's why M.I have such slow starts in the beginning 6 overs . On the contrary he believes he has another 10 years of cricket in him... God bless M.I.

  • on April 25, 2013, 12:18 GMT

Smith should remember that he is not that good of a batsman. In fact good batsmen never utter such words even against minnow teams. What makes it more funny is that he is not even a regular in MI team.

  • kallisamit on April 25, 2013, 12:16 GMT

I think Kallis bowling is crucial fr kkr. if he is gona fr the bowl definitely he bowled smith...misssing kallis in bowling.....

  • Prats6 on April 25, 2013, 12:05 GMT

Saw a couple of overs at the beginning. It looked as if Smith had absolutely no idea what he was doing there! Its fair to say I am surprised.

  • ramli on April 25, 2013, 11:28 GMT

SRT presented a pathetic sight as a batsman in this match ... he may have got his birthday gift thro his team's victory ... but still ... his batting ability is deteriorating match-by-match with only occasional flickers ... time to think about 2014 IPL role as a mentor???

  • on April 25, 2013, 11:04 GMT

Bring back mccullum , dat's the only way , they can improve their batting order , let senayake go out and take rest , practice more and come back after muccllum departs for the england series . They can manage the spin attack easily with sunil narine , so get senayake back and bring in mccullum

  • Anubhav-the-Experience on April 25, 2013, 10:50 GMT

He was not able to even touch the balls of the first over Abdhulla..I seriously feel that KKR missed a trick with him.

  • on April 25, 2013, 10:15 GMT

KKR should get McCullum in for Senanayake. Should play these 4 foreign players (Kallis/McCullum/Morgan/Narine). KKR's bowling is good with Indian players. Balaji should be handed with more responsibility. Pathan & McCullum should open and they can be very well supported by Gambhir, Kallis, Tiwary, Morgan which would actually make the middle order much stronger. KKR's last defeat to MI is the last of this IPL season. They'll bounce back and would never taste defeat from now on. All the Best.

  • on April 25, 2013, 10:04 GMT

KKR need to win atleast 7 of their remaining 9 games. To be very honest, they are out of this IPL.

  • aashkap on April 25, 2013, 8:53 GMT

While I really like Sachin Tendulkar, but I honestly feel that it is time that he should take up the role of a mentor - he has so much to offer to this cricketing world. While, no matter how many failures he may have had in recent past or will have in recent future - it will not take away anything from the legend's contribution. But the question he should answer is 'why should I go through the failures' - 'let me hang my boots with my head held high...'

One really kooks forward towards Sachin batting, but the disappointment to see one failure follow the other is really heartbreaking...

  • Krishhhhh on April 25, 2013, 8:04 GMT

This is the major problem with MI .. everyone think they are a match winner. Thank god Maxwell yet to get a game !! To be honest .. if KKR kept Abdulla away from smith and continued Narine for one more over .. MI would have defintly lost. All credit should go for Malinga final over and Bhajji six. Mr.Smith would have put MI in deep deep deep trouble if the half run out chance was converted.

  • on April 25, 2013, 7:37 GMT

KKR missed a quality supporting spinner along with Sunil Narine. Last season Shakib did it really well but Senanayeke is still young and inexperienced and Abdullah needs time to mature !!

Last year also there was a struggling for KKR. But during the final phase of the league, played some good cricket and raised to No.2 position and finally won IPLV. Bowling and openers are ok for KKR. The problem is middle order. Pl. infuse some young blood in the middle order and you are the champion

  • on April 25, 2013, 6:15 GMT

Please play this squad for KKR for upcoming match:

    1.Pathan/Bisla 2.Gambhir 3.McCullum 4.Morgan 5.Tiwary 6.Das/Bisla/Pathan 7.Bhatia 8. Lee 9. Narine. 10. Balaji 11. Shami Ahmed/Abdulla

7 batsman, 2 allrounder 3 pace bowler & 2 spinner ( They have to focused on)

Team needs of throwing yorker on death over not sixes on a row...

Focused on Pathan for Bowling also.. If this squad goes on they can beat any IPL team.

They always got more sixes in a match due to Lack of pace bowler.

I want to see KKR & SRK rocks this IPL again .........

  • pradave17 on April 25, 2013, 5:54 GMT

Well played Dwayne. All West Indies players are showing their colors well. Gayle, Bravo, Narine, Pollard, and will Samuel and Sammy if they gets chances. KKR should give a chance to Macculum. I don't understand why he is still on the bench. Anyway, both MI and KKR are not at the top in this IPL. Probably CSK & RCB will meet at the finals. And the most of Indian youngsters are boring this time. No any big prospectus to India this time from their players.
