Chennai Super Kings v Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2013, Chennai April 25, 2013

Dhoni takes stumbling Chennai home

  shares 203

Chennai Super Kings 160 for 5 (Dhoni 67*, Hussey 45, Mishra 3-26) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 159 for 6 (Dhawan 63*, Ashish Reddy 36*) by 5 wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

You can be hero and villain on the same night. Ask Amit Mishra and Ashish Reddy. Reddy scored a whirlwind 36 off 16 balls to help Sunrisers Hyderabad get 59 off the last four overs and give them something to bowl at. Mishra kept them alive with the wickets of Michael Hussey, M Vijay and Suresh Raina. However, Mishra, promoted to No.5, wasted 21 balls for just 15 runs, and dropped MS Dhoni even before he had opened the account. Reddy was given the last over to bowl with 15 to defend, and a now-rampaging Dhoni to face. Reddy completely froze, and bowled the most predictable slower balls imaginable for Dhoni to win it easily.

Spared villainy was Dwayne Bravo who bowled length in the final overs to allow Reddy those runs, but more crucially batted like a rabbit in the headlights, manufacturing - as the IPL's wont has been - a thriller out of nowhere. He played out a maiden from Karan Sharma - who registered this IPL's most economical four-over figures of 0 for 8 - in the 16th over. Then he holed out on the bowling of Ishant Sharma for a near game-changing 7 off 16.

The man who well and truly snatched heroism from villainy was Dhoni. He too began dozily, playing six dots before he top-edged Dale Steyn to long leg where Mishra missed him. How Dhoni made Sunrisers pay for it. Firstly, after Bravo's maiden left Super Kings needing 46 off last four, Dhoni hit two sensational and consecutive pulled sixes off Steyn, who at times bowled at close to 150 kph. One over midwicket, and the other dragged from wide outside off to clear long-on. This was brutal hitting against the best bowler in the world.

Bravo, though, turned it around again, and Sunrisers went to Steyn to bowl the 19th over with 27 runs to play with. Dhoni played another calculated over. Steyn bowled with third man and fine leg up to defend areas down the ground. Dhoni dabbed the first past short fine leg for two, and square-drove the second over point for four. The third one he slogged over deep midwicket. This was the first time Steyn was hit for three sixes in an IPL innings, and only the second time in any Twenty20 game.

Steyn came back, though, with Ravindra Jadeja's wicket, and left Super Kings needing 15 to win off the last over. Darren Sammy, the IPL debutant, was the only man who had bowled earlier on the night and had an over to go. Cameron White, though, went to Reddy. Perhaps he was thinking if this was Reddy's evening, it might be his night too. It wasn't.

Reddy began with a back-of-the-hand slower ball that was almost off the pitch. He ran up again, and tried the same slower ball again. Dhoni missed, but it was not as though he had not picked it. Reddy had got lucky Dhoni didn't connect. Reddy, though, tried it again, and Dhoni smacked it clean out of the ground. Eight off four now. Reddy was clearly nervous. He tried the normal yorker now, and missed his line by feet. Five wides. Hang on. Dhoni admits to having touched it. So three off four now becomes four off three. Dhoni pulled the next slower ball to beat long-on and bring the win that put Super Kings level with Royal Challengers Bangalore at the top of the table.

Watching all this, Shikhar Dhawan would be wondering whatever happened to what should have been a special Sunrisers debut for him. He came out from a month in the cold storage, braved a blow in the unmentionables, scored a fifty to give Sunrisers a total to bowl at, but ended as a footnote on a night Dhoni went from 0 off 6 to 67 off 37.

Dhoni keeps on finding these hidden gems! Masterstroke of the season has been M.Sharma; keeps taking crucial wickets regularly. As for SRH, it was a mistake sending Mishra before a world renowed allrounder in Sammy. Maybe Sammy could have conjured 15-20 runs which could have all the difference in the end.

Both teams had their chances in the match.. what stands out through the wins that CSK have had so far is that some one has just about come in at the right time and helped them cross the finishing line... Be it Jadeja, Bravo or Dhoni... Also it was interesting to see Fleming come out frank and say they did not deserve the win but they somehow pulled it out.. Knowing how good a think tank CSK have, these are dangerous signs for other teams.. If a team even while not performing at their best & not having their best 11 (due to injuries and some out of form) are still able to win against teams at top of the table !! I guess that sends out the msg loud & clear.. ! CSK will get better & its gonna be very hard to stop them !!

This match provided performance/health report for the respective teams. For future (critical/crucial/elimination) games, it showed, 1) whom they should not choose. 2) what decisions are blunders (known to failures/backfires). 3) whom you should not drop. 4) what combination of bowlers not to use. 5) what combination of bowlers need to be used. 6) what is the cost of only one fielding mistake (dropping Dhoni). 7) what kind of bowler a captain should reserve for the last over, especially when defending less than 20 runs in the last over. Mishra is felt/missed heavily at that stage.

One suggestion is to SRH is, always reserve Mishra for last 2 overs or, when opposition is on their 7th wicket.

The difference between the actual and opposite result was, Mishra dropping Dhoni (as per chances of taking crucial wickets). But the last over should've been to some like Vihari when both Steyn and Mishra are done already.

But a very good match overall.

i think both the think tank made lapseses in this match. From SRH Steyn should have been opening the spell that way hussey could have been controlled. And from CSK Jadeja should have come in front of Bravo he would have handled the spinner K.sharma better. But nothing to take away from L.sharma excellent bowling to contain CSK.But as usual Dhoni is there for ever.

For everybody who criticize Dale Steyn. When he gets going everybody enjoyed and praised. But when he had an ONE off day, all are saying he is not the best bowler orelse a good t20 bowler.I donot know even donald bradmon had got out for ducks when he was the best test player in the world. It is a pure joke saying best bowler should not have an off day.Every body have off days. But he has become the greatest pace bowler because he has this wide gap between those off days .One or two off days is not a criteria to judge the life long performances of a Person. If you analyse such it is not an analyse but pure opportunitism. 0

Dale has one off day(may be two or three) but he will bounce back immediately. You cannot take that attitude of attacking from him although he was going through a rough patch.About CSk, No matter what anybody says here Dhoni or jaddu or bravo or raina or morkel or hussey etc will finish the match and bring CSK home.Next match it will be badri who knows.!!!

Really impressed with Haryana quick - Mohit Sharma, he gives it everything each time he bowls and has a knack of picking wickets. That being said, I'd like to see Jason Holder amongst the wickets. It's great to see the Windies players contribute significantly to the respective franchises - Gayle (RCB), Pollard (MI), DJ Bravo (CSK). Good signs for WI cricket?

It was obviously a good strategy to have sammy/perera and ishant to bowl at start against chennai..Ashish is the most experienced last over bowler for Hyderabad. What went wrong is just the execution . As always Steyn dissapoints when ordinary things or expected of him and bowls extra ordinary when no one expects it

A CSK win is always encouraged by us (CSK fans) ,but as a cricket fanatic and analyzing the way CSK has played, its never been a team game , other than few occasions. Few games where CSK never deserved to win, crossed the line by some cameos. May be its the way dhoni wants his team to be under pressure right from early stage so that they can handle the critical situations well, later .Biggest concerns would be Murali vijay and Raina, vijay is throwing away his wickets attempting for horrendous shots. I would rather give Murali vijay a break for 2-4 games, may be allow raina to open the innings (so that he can utilize the powerplay), 1 down could be badri /morris, dhoni, jadeja, anirudha, bravo, ashwin. Now that CSK are in a better stage, they can afford for few options. May be try some combo till game 12, 13-16 match by now, they would know which will be best combo. All the best CSK!!

In this game clearly Sunrisers were missing Thisara Parerra. I wonder why White gave last over Ahsish reddy, may be he thought he will do some wonder like he did in batting. When Dale Steyn was hit all round the park what can reddy do. Sammy too did not have guts to bowl the last over, very strange.. I hope Sunrisers do not set down in the remaining games. Whatever most of the matches are looking one sided but this match looked like thriller.

  • crindex on April 26, 2013, 18:29 GMT

@ThyrSaadam : well said. I agree with you. CSK fans constituting younger fans of today are not aware of team form and CSK is woefully out of form as a team. Someone keeps bailing it out and with luck they reached semis the past two season. The CSK coaching staff seems to me is clueless about this.

  • kumarcoolbuddy on April 26, 2013, 16:55 GMT

@moralsupporter79, buddy I guess you are overreacting here. You are talking as if CSK is unbeatable and is anyway going to win despite other CSK batters' poor performance. CSK only has good batting but that had failed today except ruthless MSD. That drop was definitely crucial considering how danger MSD is. SRH has to definitely regret for dropping MSD.

  • ThyrSaadam on April 26, 2013, 16:25 GMT

CSK cannot always continue to jailbreak out of such situations, well as long as they keep doing so, their fans will not complain i guess?

  • on April 26, 2013, 14:20 GMT

  • lankavigi on April 26, 2013, 14:09 GMT

Sangakarra's got take helm. SRH shud not waste the awsome start they've had. White's form as batsman and captain is awful and pathetic!!! Dhoni played well, but SRH would have had a better chance if Sammy had bowled the last over!!

  • AlbertPintoGussaHua on April 26, 2013, 13:44 GMT

Why is Cameron White the SRH captain? Why is Cameron White in the SRH team? Why is Cameron White in the IPL?

  • EverybodylovesSachin on April 26, 2013, 12:26 GMT

IPL clearly shows the big difference between domestic level and international level players.

  • TRAM on April 26, 2013, 11:24 GMT

CSK's main weakness is bowling. If SRH can score 160 after losing 3/37 in 5 ov, that is the conclusion. In batting track, CSK batsmen could score 200+ runs. But their net bowling is not good to either contain or take wickets on such tracks, so the opponents can still hope to give a fight.

In spin dept., they have only Ashwin, but opponents have learnt to negotiate Ashwin overs for 6 rpo without getting out. Jadeja gives out sixers easily. They dont want to bring the 3rd spinner Jakati in order to keep their strong batting & fielding line up.

Even their foreign pace bowlers never bowl yorkers, and serve too many length/nothing balls making it weak death bowling. Almost every team including SRH scores against csk in the death overs.

They are able to somewhat compensate their weak bowling by brilliant fielding especially local players ( Raina, Jadeja, Badri, Vijay). Of course add MHussey, Bravo, Faf the world's best (if he is in the 11)..

  • cool_sande on April 26, 2013, 10:55 GMT

Why Steyn did not bowl yorkers to Dhoni?? The answer is the ball would have been dispatched over the rope with the help of MSD's helicopter. Most people dont remember what happened to Malinga's yorkers in 2012 playoffs.

  • Dr.Lakson on April 26, 2013, 10:40 GMT

White is not a good captain and also he is failing in his batting?...... As with his batting he simply goes with the gut feelings and hope that his luck will turnout. It worked in some of the games but now it is not working........... Asking Reddy to bowl last over was very cruel. He should have at least been given one over earlier..... it was simply on the fact the Reddy had a lot of luck with the bat and White was hoping that the luck would translate to the bowling also..........

  • on April 26, 2013, 10:40 GMT

What kind of a captain do the SRH have in absence of their regular? Call him complacent? Or subdued spectator on field watching closely how Hussey and Dhoni strike the ball? Surely Cameroon White has not shown that he can be relied upon for both batting and leading the side, not just in this match but all. It was the bowlers who were defending small totals without much contributed by the captain which needs to be addressed within the SRH. Wake up think tank! There is a job to be done before all is over. SRH needs performing captains to run the business at the top not just makeshift guys...

  • on April 26, 2013, 10:31 GMT

CSK has many players to fill a slot . If it is not Hussey or Dhoni ,they have Jadeja, Bravo and Albie . All clean hitters of a cricket ball . They are already at the peak and still they want to improve . Lot of dangerous messages for the other teams in contention.

MS Dhoni seems to have found the magic-template to crack the code in ODI's and T20's. Added to that his experience has helped him become a well-rounded cricketer. With experience comes confidence and with confidence comes runs and that is what MS has, now, in his favour

  • AbAdvani on April 26, 2013, 9:28 GMT

if Mishra were to lose atleast 10 kgs, he would be an automatic choice in India's T20 team -his horrendous fielding mainly due to his excess weight is the biggest culprit that his holding him back. I think Sanga needs to be back in the Sunrisers team -Chennai got away because Sunrisers could not play Thisara thanks to Amma's crazy diktats that obviously favor chennai which does not have a single srilankan playing for them

  • DINESHCC on April 26, 2013, 9:21 GMT

PERFECT TEN: Your 3rd reason for SRH's loss is not acceptable. The same Ashish Reddy removed the dangerous ROSS TAYLOR when SRH successfully defended the target of 124. It is T-20 game and anything can happen. When an unknown bowler bowled maiden that too the 16th over, Asish Reddy could have pulled things back for SRH. But that ploy was not clicked for White. Who knows, if Saami given the ball, Dhoni would have sealed the match at 19.3 instead of 19.4.

Remember T20 WC 2007? A novice called Joginder pulled it off ... White thought something like that and erred ... the striking difference is that Joginder was more than willing to bowl that last over but Aashish reddy was clearly not at all ready to bowl that last over and was clearly very nervous

  • ramli on April 26, 2013, 8:05 GMT

cricket is team sport ... not one or two man show ... If a team cannot rotate the players in case of exigencies, it is no good team at all ... so stop mulling over the ban of SL players and try and get into the play-offs ahead of the over-hyped teams

  • PerfectTen on April 26, 2013, 7:46 GMT

Crazy decisions from SRH could cost them a place in the final four. 1. Playing Sargunam - clearly not suited for this level of cricket. IT was written all over him when he played. 2. Sending Mishra up the order - once in a while he may contribute when not much is expected with the bat. But, coming in before Sammy was ridiculous. 3. Throwing the ball to Reddy for the 20th over & more so when Dhoni was at the crease. Come on, you can try such mind games with others and not MSD. 15 runs was not easy and Sammy would have been a much better bet. White thought he was playing a master stroke by bringing in Reddy and clearly it eased the situation for Dhoni and CSK. Despite the loss & some blunders, SRH should feel positive with the way Shikhar, Sammy and K Sharma played. They now move into the must list of SRH for the upcoming matches.

  • on April 26, 2013, 7:32 GMT

I guess thats the way CSK plays, they usually play more cauitions at starting with prime motto of having wickets in hand and they have confidence to chase down any total like wise other teams. More importantly they can choose that way as they have resouces to do in the form MS, JADDU,ALBIE,MORRIES..........

BUt for CSK, raina & jadeja shud definetely improve their game...& for god's sake drop vijay for couple of matches...his awful form..disgusting watch him playing.

  • on April 26, 2013, 7:16 GMT

SRH will have the best team from the next game onwards. Sanga, Thisara, Sammy and Steyn 4 overseas. They will have 6 T20 Specialist bawlers Steyn, I Sharma, Thisara, Sammy, Mishra and K Sharma. So no need to ball a part timer like Reddy. Batting will surely be more strengthen after Dhawans inclusion hopefully he will be okay to play in the next game and Sanga can play the anchoring role by opening or try Perera at top. They have a good balanced team but some of the Indian guys need to do better in ground fielding.

It was spinners' day yesterday. All the spinners on both sides were economical. Fast bowlers went for runs. Steyn will win more matches than lose matches. Yesterday he stumbled upon Dhoni. If Mishra held the catch Steyn might have had a better day. With KSharma added to their bowling, SRH bowling looks the strongest this year. With Dhawan's inclusion, the batting is also strengthened. If they sharpen their fielding they are sure to reach play offs. After that anything can happen.

  • IndiaCricketT20 on April 26, 2013, 6:34 GMT

    To defeat CSK:

If CSK's asking rate is between 16 and 36 for the last overs, stop the play, don't bowl the last overs - its useless to bowl to them in those situations, demand for Duckworth-Lewis system to decide the winner.

If someone drops Dhoni's catch or if some CSK batsmen gets out on a no ball, please ask him to walk off as per fair play.

Dont take / cheer for a fall of CSK wicket in the slog overs, you never know who is coming next, and what is he going to do... Its better to bowl to a set / tired batsmen, rather than someone who is going to swing his life and others out :). Penalize them a over each time they change the batting order without giving proper notice in advance.

And someone please book a case against Dhoni and CSK for teasing others with a definite victory and then snatching it away in the last minute... and hope they will stop doing this in future, it really hurts :(. For a team, Gayle's brutal murder is any day better than Dhoni's slow painful death.

Excellent performance by SRH barring few mistakes which are bound to happen in the game, without their top most player Perera they managed to score 160 and took the match to last over that too with MSD getting a lucky life. This proved CSK is not as invincibles as their fans make and SRH is not too easy as the critics say. On the equal grounds SRH may have won. With Dhawan back to team in style and K Sharma evolving into frugal leggie, everything seems to be good for SRH. Just they need to forget this biased result and move on next game. Well done SRH!!

  • Thyagu5432 on April 26, 2013, 6:15 GMT

Typical CSK win. A roller coaster right through. Cruising along at one time but getting crushed at another and finally a heart stopping finish. Looks like CSK owners have tied up with cardios across the globe and this is one way to give all of them new patients.

It is such a small difference between being a hero or a villain. Ashish Reddy would have fancied his chances of becoming a hero at the start of the over but just 4 balls into his over, he became a villain. Poor chap! First of all, he shouldn't have been bowling and on top of that this happens.

The last two innings proves that Jaddu is no "sir". He flashes, swishes and swings his bat. If the path of the bat and the ball meet at the right place then the ball finds itself beyond the boundary or else it gets safely tucked in the hands of some fielder.

Srilankan ban on chennai throws some lime light for every IPL team visiting chennai....

PWI got Steve smith, RCB got Rampaul, SRH got Sammy and by one way MI got johson as well

    Good in the Bad things

  • moralsupporter79 on April 26, 2013, 5:31 GMT

People talk about the missed catch of MSD by Mishra. If Dhoni was out that time, Jadeja should have finished it. Only because of one missed catch SRH would have not won. The opponents are CSK lead by Mr.Captain Cool. What about SRH batting, if the last 4 overs was not gone for 59 runs, then the total would be less than 120.So dont go for dropped catches, if you fail. Accept the failure and appreciate MSD, boys.

  • vijaipkm on April 26, 2013, 5:26 GMT

Can anyone justify Bravo batting y'day, ridicules. As a CSK fan I can't tolerate this. These type of play will not work-out for Knock-out games. My team for CSK for knock out games; Hussy, Vijay, Faf du, Raina, Badri, MSD, Jadeja, Morris, Ashwin, M Sharma & Nannes. By this we should have strong batting as well as bowling line-up.

  • Prabhash1985 on April 26, 2013, 5:25 GMT

It was a foolish decision to give Reddy the final over while experienced Darren Sammy had bowled just three overs (as far as I remember). It's not Reddy's fault. He simply cannot handle it, and it's not his fault. True that Sammy went for runs, but definitely not Reddy for the final over. It was very clear even before a ball being bowled. That was simply crazy.

  • on April 26, 2013, 5:21 GMT

White chose not to give last over to Sammy because of what Dhoni did to Steyn, and thought of bringing slower bowler was good looking at how Mishra and Sharma bowled. But, Reddy looked nervous from the time ball was given to him, which was clearly visible. If Reddy wasn't comfortable, White should have opted for Sammy, though result wouldn't have been different but for sure those wides wouldn't have come. All in all, best bowler over should be reserved, had it been 19th over to Reddy, he would have bowled much better and Steyn would have sealed the game in 20th.

  • on April 26, 2013, 5:20 GMT

Dhawan and Ashish Reddy made the ordinary match in to an extra-ordinary match by scoring 60 odd runs in the last few overs and the final score of SRH's 159 looked defendable. The hero of batting Ashish Reddy became Zero by bowling the final over of the match. Both CSK and SRH has to improve a lot in depth bowling. Both looked pathetic and both sides batsmen cashed on the lethargic bowling with so much of width and off volleys offered to them to score freely.

I think CSK should bring Nannes (if he is fit to play) in place of Holder. Holder is very tall but neither has pace nor variation. Jadeja should have bowled more instead of only one over. Ashwin as usual provided excellent variation and created confusion to the batsmen.

The final over of SRH bowling should have bowled by Sammy instead of the part timer which costed them the match.

So many things to learn by both teams from this match. Being the local group CSK did not make use of the advantage even though they have come through.

  • on April 26, 2013, 5:04 GMT

Superb tight bowling by Karan Sharma created the opportunity for SRH and hardly gets a mention. Mishra was lucky and no hero this match (forgetting the dropped catch) - Mishra should have shared it with Karan. Other things. In hindsight Steyn should have opened and also the last over. Reddy could have gotten the penultimate over with less pressure on him. Darren Sammy needs more matches before he can come into his own. What a thriller anyway .. Sunrisers came so close and walk away proud still.

  • KRKannan on April 26, 2013, 4:57 GMT

  • SanjayUvacha on April 26, 2013, 4:32 GMT

What was Cameron White thinking? Ashish Reddy hadn't bowled at all in the match and is also a non regular bowler. Darren Sammy was the obvious choice with his experience but guess he opted for Ashish Reddy as he hoped his superb batting display would rub off on his bowling! A very nervous Reddy was happily clobbered by the experienced MSD! Cameron White's inspired decision spelled doom for the Sun Risers!

Perhaps one of the key differentiators is CSKs fielding...which stands between the win and a loss....spectacular fielding on catches and run outs...excellent commitment to stop the runs...way to go!

  • subratachakrabarty on April 26, 2013, 4:25 GMT

I think that the catch dropped by Mishra was a crucial one. It was an easy catch, misjudged completely. To worse the situation more, the last over of 2nd innings was given to a non-experience bowler. Bad decision. It was more of bowling faults rather than batting for SRH. CSK cashing in at right time. Dhoni cased in after getting life. But still SRH do have a very good chance to make it to final 4.

  • Subin_Daniel on April 26, 2013, 4:21 GMT

Oh god, what a thriller again and nice to see that my team CSK won and more than that it was by the heroics of my beloved Captain ,MSD . Being awake till 0415 ( Melbourne time) wasn't wasted !!! Its nice that CSK is giving chances to young Mohit , Morris and Holder . But they should replace Holder with Nannes because CSK really need some experience in their pace department and every batsmen know that the slow ball is coming with Bravo ( although not a pace bowler ) bowling. Leaking 59 runs in 4 overs should be a worry. Also try Aniruddha for Vijay. In every IPL , Vijay started like this , then the management sits him out for a few games , then he comes back in flying colours in the latter stages. Hope that it will happen again. Congrats MSD & CSK . Keep Going guyz................... Whistle podu.....

  • Sriki79 on April 26, 2013, 4:20 GMT

I really feel bad for Darren Sammy who got left out without his being given his last over today. Being the captain of the WI he would have know better how to handle pressure and bowled. Of course Dhoni may have hit him too but the probability of success was certainly more with him. And being such a senior player in the team if you are not given the chance to take on the opposition it is not respectful. Cameron White should apologize to him as a courtesy.

  • Htc-Baseball on April 26, 2013, 4:12 GMT

No doubt SRH missed Sanga and Perera but i don't know why my fellow lankan fans are always blaming something or the other, i would have recommended SRH to sign someone like Lakmal in place of Steyn as he is better in this format!! Anyway hope they sign him next season

  • Vivekaks on April 26, 2013, 4:10 GMT

Another cliffhanger...ppl may argue Dhoni was dropped on 0 or watever...fact remains he scored 67 of 31 balls from there on... I have seen many a finisher of the game....but none like Dhoni...this man does it again and again...ppl say he tries to take the game as close as possible. what ppl dont understand is...he trusts his ability to finish the game in the end overs...its not easy...he knows if he tries to push the game till the end...he can bcome a villian...so one cant jus blame him for pushin the game... end overs always have equal pressure on both sides...and bowlers try to experiment with length and pace...and dhoni is adept at clearing these balls out of the park... He is the best finisher I have ever seen int he last 20 yrs tat i have been watchin cricket. About skills...lets not get there....one has to get runs...no matter how...launchin Steyn thrice is no mean feat.... He should be the captain till he retires...its his mindset that India needs not as much his skills...

  • ladycricfan on April 26, 2013, 4:02 GMT

A maiden over is better than a wicket maiden. KSharma bowled extremely well. Even Hussey found it difficult to score off him. Vijay did well to give company to Hussey. Opening partnership of 65 is very good in a T20 match. Mishra's ball spun so sharply and Vijay missed it. His trademark innings is just round the corner. CSK bowling is not as good as some other teams. Injuries don't help either. Nannes should replace Holder when fit.

  • on April 26, 2013, 3:46 GMT

Let us agree at the outset that SRH has the weakest batting lineup in the competition. Compare that with star studded CSK or MI or KKR or RCB batting lineup. Before IPL started, most would have said SRH would finish among the bottom 2 or 3. Against this context, this is a superb performance because :

    1. They depend on Sangakara, Cameron White and Thisara Perera for the runs. Sangakarra is woefully out of form and not played this match. Cameron White also struggling for runs. Perera was not allowed to play since it is a Chennai match. Despite this, they scored 159 which is a great positive

    2. They have made the best team of IPL sweat it out in their backyard. CSK would know deep down that the last over could have gone any way. 15 off the last over would have been a challenge even to the great Dhoni

    3. Karan's impressive bowling is now an addition to the already fine combination of Steyn, Ishant and Mishra

SRH can hold their head high despite the loss as this is a tough opponent.

  • jhovee on April 26, 2013, 3:39 GMT

Bringiing Back Sanga is not the Solution but perhaps De Kock has exhausted all his Chances . I think Tisara and Sami should play together as this would strengthen the Bowling and Batting Departments. White should and Sunrisers should go with an Indian Keeper without making further chances.Catches win Matches and if Mishra had held on to Dhonis Catch the match would have been in the bag for the Sunrisers.

  • ladycricfan on April 26, 2013, 3:15 GMT

It was poor judgement from Mishra. He was not under the ball. He had to reach for it. You need skill to take good catches. Captain has to place the right player in the right position. Nothing to do with CSK's luck. Hussey took a blinder to dismiss Gambhir. Today Vijay took an excellent catch. To be a champion team you have to be good in fielding as well.

  • on April 26, 2013, 3:14 GMT

Xavier Thalaivan Sargunam: I wonder what got him selected in the eleven. This was his first T20! He has played only one first class match. Well, with pathetic NRR, SRH needs to win at least 3 more matches to reach playoffs, and these experiments may prove to be too expensive.

  • on April 26, 2013, 2:58 GMT

Wow! SRH has gained respect in the loss! Well, they were close. Other than the infamous catch and the puzzling 20th over by Ashish Reddy, there were team selection errors and the messed up batting order. Ashish Reddy could have come up the order in place of Amit Mishra and Thalaivan Sargunam. Ashish Reddy and Sammy should have been used much earlier. It is unfair to dump the responsibility on Ashish Reddy to defend. It is always difficult to play bowlers like Steyn and Ishant when the target is 15 as it puts pressure. Even after the catch drop, the SRH were still in the position to win, and I would blame poor captaincy for the loss.

  • jhovee on April 26, 2013, 2:57 GMT

Shocked to see a MAIDEN over, that too on 16th, & that too while Bravo & Dhoni at crease, and that too over 10 runs needed, & that too Steyn has 2 more overs to finish! Though the intension was not to loose wicket against spin, Brav should have rotated the strike atleast. Though CSK are good finishers, they need to remember a thing 'ALL DAYS ARE NOT SUNDAYS' !

  • Jayseks on April 26, 2013, 2:55 GMT

My dear fielding captains! Please take a cue at what had happened so far. Three different games, but similar results. In the match between PWI and KXIP, Luke Wright the hero with the bat was given the last over. In CSK's match against RR, Shane Watson the centurion was given the ball by none other than Rahul Dravid with Ashok Chandila still left with a over after a good spell of three overs. I was expecting Cameron White to repeat the same mistake and he too fell trap to it by giving the ball to Ashish Reddy instead of the more experienced Darren Sammy. I am not sure how many more captains are going to fall prey to this new superstition that doesn't work really! Probably in hindsight, White would have missed the services of Thisara Perera!!

  • VJGS on April 26, 2013, 2:43 GMT

I can't believe how many people believe that if Dhoni had been caught, CSK had no chance of a win. Have you all forgotten that if MSD was out, Jadeja was the next man in? Yes, he got out early when he did play, but that was only because he came in the 19th over and had no time to play himself in. If he had come in when Raina was still around, he'd have had the time to get himself in and he has proven that he can hit 50 of the final 5 with absolute ease. Even if he is the last remaining batsman at the crease.

CSK are yet to peak.. I hope Albie or Nannes get well soon so that we can drop Holder and play either of them.. That will strengthen death bowling.. As far as batting concerned, its a worry that Badri does not get to bat in many games.. I think out of 8 matches he has batted only 3 or 4 times.. This is because CSK have chases almost every match exept the Delhi one.. Vijay will play his trademark game soon.. Not a big worry.. All in all looks good so far for CSK..

All those who are saying that Murali Vijay is not performing well are jus plain ignorant about the difficulty of being a opener in T20. Dont be critical, not everyone can be a Gayle and even Gayle will fail in front of Ashwin or Narine or Steyn. Murali has contributed immensely for the CSK , Tamilnadu and India - Class is permanent.

@SidsIPLTeam: They DO have two potential replacements for White: JP Duminy and Clint McKay. Either could do no worse than White given his current form. Both can be handy bowlers too (esp McKay).

But the immediate change has to be Patel for de Kock, Duminy for Sargunam and Perera for White. Sammy should stay for now.

Optimum foreign four IMO: Steyn, Perera, Duminy, McKay. They should try this combo out a couple of times at least ..

  • Richvii on April 26, 2013, 0:33 GMT

Steyn is a good bowler but he has a big ego- proven again today. when was hit for six,he came hard and bowled a fast bouncer which was Fedexed by dhoni to the stadium. He did not bowl round the wicket to Dhoni at all. One cannot bowl Dhoni on the off and middle stump a good length or a short pitch ball on a benign wicket. He will just massacre the bowler!Steyn just forgot the simple 101- it was expected out of him to change the line and length when he is being clobbered by Dhoni! But as egoistic person he is on the field, he did not use his brains.he kept on feeding good length and short pitched deliveries on the off, outside off and middle stump . when he bowled on the middle and leg he cramped Dhoni and could score only a single. It is very important to have a game plan for each impact players! One good thing happened although in the larger interest of the game, more so from India standpoint; the mediocre and overrated Murali failed again! So I thank SRH forthat and especially Mishra!

  • on April 26, 2013, 0:17 GMT

I am disappointed with CSK. They are not learning from their mistakes and repeating it again and again.

    a) When hussey is playing so well, what is the need for vijay to take risk, he just needs to take a single and give strike back to hussey. Do again and again vijay wants to prove that he can also hit big shots and gets out.

    b) 13 to 17 overs are crucial in a run chase because that lays the platform for the finish but we are consistently not scoring enough in those overs. Yesterday a maiden in the 15th over when you are chasing 160, can you imagine that? Come on bravo, take some singles, if you can't hit big.

    c) Why should Dhoni always do the work for CSK, I think we are giving him too much work to do in the last 2 to 3 overs?

    d) Our bowling in the depth is poor; yesterday it was ashish and dhawan; against KKR it was narine and against RCB it was AB. Sure they will go for runs but it must be reasonable .. all these players were gifted with balls that can be hit miles.

I really felt bad for SRH on this game. The game was on cards for them until 19.1. Ashish R should've varied the pace after 19.2. He is not a bad bowler, but repeating consecutive balls in the same pace and angle to Dhoni kind of quick readers, is not going to benefit his team. Probably Dhoni would have scored same number of runs with the same number of balls in last over, but atleast some angle variations would've saved 3 consecutive boundaries. Certainly CSK won this on 100% luck presented by bad decisions at the heat of the scene. Those bad decisions can be avoided, by taking a timeout and having a drink before bowling.

  • Richvii on April 25, 2013, 21:33 GMT

Lot has been said about who should have bowled the last over- including me! MY only contention here is that Sammy being the more exprienced one should have been given the ball- he does bowl good fuller length/yorkers!Cameroon white should have bowled at least 1 over and surprisingly did not give bowling to Vihari! Further, steyn ought to be more precise and lethal Greatness lies by not bleeding runs when bowling at death and that too on a batting wicket! Almost everyone becomes a stud on bowling track!Ishant sharma is hugely over rated!he should learn from Vinay kumar, Diinda, Bhuvanesh kumar- how to bowl yorkers and full length. Bowlers don't bowl yorkers/fuller length because they do not want to get injured; as it requires to put in extra effort! to bowl yorkers/fast fuller length deliveries !And that extra effort was missing today!

So far, I wasn't taking notice of SRH. Thought they would win a few in the beginning but fade away once the others got settled. But, this Dhawan guy is making everyone sit and take notice. Now, if they can bring Sangakkara to open in place of De Kock, which I presume is going to happen next match & give him some time without having to rush, then that might make them serious contenders. White is not doing great at this moment, but they don't have any really good batsmen to replace him. If he doesn't perform in the next couple of matches then may be give Perera & Sammy a go together. Honestly, Dhoni's missed catch cost them the match. And CSK really need to look at their chasing ways. I am afraid that they might faulter somewhere crucial, like the knockouts. When their start is brisk, the middle order takes time and vice-versa. But, you've got to give it to Dhoni. Even a bowler like Steyn didn't know where to bowl, leave alone A.Reddy. Dhoni just messes up the thinking process.

The local players have not been good for any home team in general, prime examples Sachin for MI and Sehwag for DD. So not sure the points table would look any different in any case.

  • on April 25, 2013, 21:20 GMT

@Seaming wicket. It is about anticipation. Even the best of yorkers can be negotiated, dealt with if the Batsmen is witty enough to anticipate it. AB has done it way many times with swift foot work and Dhoni with with scoop helicopter to dig out almost close yorkers. You see batsmen playing Switch hits and reverse sweeps against a pacy delivery commonly today. In modern cricket were players are daring to innovate no delivery is really unplayable.

@ Yes, India being former No.1 was a reply directed to a stray comment which demeaned Indian bowling. I'm not responsible for the way you understood it. It was said on a different context and was a reply to someone else altogether. Nevertheless the point was that Indian bowling may not the strongest but they still are the current champions and a formidable team which could beat any international team when playing their cricket right. Loads of potential talents, Resilient youngsters, Great captain and loving fans.

Captaincy blunders by White, in absence of Sanga, was the cause for the SRH loss. SRH XI selection was all wrong. Samantray & P.Patel being replaced by Sargunam & de Kock, with no justification. de Kock had failed on 2 chances with 2 & a Duck. why drop Lynn? Lastly the batting order showed how little White knows about his own team. Sammy, an all rounder, is a hitter of some repute. Chawla is a bowler. Sending Chawla #5 ahead of Sammy was a cardinal mistake! The last blunder was bringing on Ashish to bowl the 20th over with game on the line to face Dhoni, the best finisher in T20! SRH need Sanga back to lead + replace de Kock - a dead loss!. Apart from these blunders, Dhawan was great but Dhoni was even greater. These 2 dominated the batting with fine secondary roles by Ashish & Hussey for the 2 sides. Mishra & Karan Sharma were unbelievable & gave SRH a chance to win. Mohit Sharma was the CSK's best bowler. Both Karan & Mohit deserve to be considered for Team India. Congrats CSK.

@Anjan Manikumar ...Like 4 foreign players in each IPL team, each team must have 5 players from their local state and just 2 from other indian states......Then we will see which teams will rock....

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:52 GMT

The fielding lapse that plagued DC cost SRH the game. There were other areas too where 'who blinked first' mattered. The last over showed who is the smarter captain. Cameron White should have used the experienced Darren Sammy, and not Ashish Reddy, who definitely cannot defend 15 runs that too against Dhoni.

  • kc69 on April 25, 2013, 20:51 GMT

Maybe Cameroon White wanted to win Star Plus "Nayi Soch" award for innovative thinking.Because he hasn't got any awards this season till now.Anyways bowling Reddy was a gamble but still Dhoni would have won it even if it was Sammy.Match was lost the moment when Mishra dropped Dhoni's simple catch.

  • Ahgg on April 25, 2013, 20:47 GMT

@baseball sucks also dekkok is a fast scoring batsman who is ideal to play in this format. Give him another chance like sanga got 5 chances. Cricket is not a game where u play with names my friend. Come to reality. Sanga is not a t20 match winner on his own and all right minded people know it and since this srh team is especially weak in thier batting (not having enough aggressive batsmen) they can't afford to have a foreign "grafter" in the team. U get me? Hope I've got my point a a across to u

  • kc69 on April 25, 2013, 20:44 GMT

I still wonder why Sunrisers didnt pick Nathan McCullum instead of Sammy on a turning pitch. The game would have been completely different if that had happened.Anyways All the best Sunrisers, you still are lot better than many teams in this tournament.

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:40 GMT

Poor captaincy by White. Not because he gave the last over to Ashish reddy, which was the right move as he takes pace off the ball ....and since Darren Sammy would have gone over the fence even more easily, But because he didn't bowl himself at all. Mishra had picked up 3 wickets and Sharma gave away just 8 runs in his 4 overs, didnt it strike him that he good bowl a couple of overs of leg spin as well ?

I was very surprised SRH even gave a fight to CSK. Shikar Dhawan was the only reason the match was competitive, as he looked class apart from the rest not to mention some ordinary bowling to Ashish reddy at the end.

As far as the tournament goes, CSK and RCB seem to be in a different league from the rest of the teams, very hard to see any other team making the finals..

  • kc69 on April 25, 2013, 20:34 GMT

It was clearly evident that the absence of key player such as Thisara Parera has caused a big gap in Sunrisers bowling. And people need to remember that this pitch is a turner because of which Steyn or Ishant were not lethal.A bowler like Thisara was a go to man because he takes the pace off the ball very well. Moreover for me the match was lost when Mishra dropped Dhoni early in the innings.Feel for Ashish Reddy for that final over. But when its Dhoni Vs any bowler in the world 9 out of 10 times we will see him gettting the job done.

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:33 GMT

This is a rare sight... The 3 teams that are at the top of the points table are all from the south of India..

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:31 GMT

SRH as a team has played over its potential for the completed 8 games. Proved they have caliber to defeat RCB and a close finish against CSK today. Staying at number 3 on the points table now will play 8 other games with the teams they rubbed shoulders. Bowling display has been stunning and Shikar Dhawan played a brilliant innings against CSK only to drop a vital catch of MSD to lose the game. Sanga, Perera or any name for that matter would have ended up with the same or even lower score this innings had seen. CSK still not in the best of their form and continue to win matches - when the tournament progresses with the improvement in their performances, CSK will be through to contend for the Pepsi IPL trophy yet again. The litmus test for SRH has just begun.

  • warun_sharma on April 25, 2013, 20:25 GMT

Hyderabad had their chance in this game. They did well to get to 159. They did well to restrict the opposition to 132 in 18 overs and then Dhoni took over. A four and a six off Steyn and then a strange decision to bowl Reddy last over that costs them the game. Of course, Dhoni's the man, as he always is for the Super Kings. 67 from 37 after he started off so slowly. Hats off !!!

@Ahgg : Dhawan is a good batsman. But, is he a good captain ??? Whats your logic behind handing the wheel to Dhawan ? In that case, why don't we give it to Ishant Sharma or Mishra or some other dude ??? Are you that ignorant to say that captaincy should be given to this guy n that guy time to time, when there is a world class captain "Sanga" in the team ?? And Do you like to see White or De Kock in the team anymore ? It seems you don't anything about Cricket. So why bother ???

  • IndCricFan2013 on April 25, 2013, 20:19 GMT

SRH made 3 mistakes, promoted Mishra in batting,Picked Sargunam and gave last over to Reddy,forgivable,T20 debut, bowl at death and pinch hitter failing. CSK, made numerous mistakes.Bowled 4 rabbish overs one after the other from experienced Bravo and Morris.Sharma should have been bowled out all 4,when he was on fire at the start. Vijay does not know how to pick leg spinner,Raina should have enjoyed Mishra, but failed. Bravo played maiden and more dot balls.Jadeja hit stright to fielder's hand.Dhoni played only 4 balls in 18 balls( Over16,17,18),they all wasted balls and got out, did not take a single to give Dhoni stirke. The commentator said Morris did the good thing by not touching the last ball of the 19th over, so that he neither got out, nor took a single, so that Dhoni had all 6 balls.Dhoni is worth $5 million for CSK, $3m for his batting and $2m for Captaining them, wicket keeping comes free, as he loves to do it. Hussey +Ashwin exceptions. Badri can play spin so well inplaceBravo

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:15 GMT

@ To everyone criticizing Dale Steyn, please understand that he is a new ball bowler. He should have bowled out earlier today and it could have crippled the massive RR that CSK plundered (58 in first 6). Also, as someone else mentioned, Steyn is a rhythm bowler. He bowls at his best when he has support from the other end, support from the field! Amit mishra failed to hold to the Steyn Generated opportunity that could have changed the game. Its not luck. Its inefficiency. Not to forget, when someone like MSD gets in his groove, even the best bowler in the world is tested!!

#Dirk Nannes to Join the Pack in their next outing. Vijay is bound to be replaced with Anirudha. Hell they even have T20 Specialist Du Plessis waiting. CSK are only getting stronger. Watch out teams#

  • chetan129 on April 25, 2013, 20:14 GMT

I am from hyderbad living in US. So, I was kinda supporting SRH to win, but thoroughly enjoyed my Indian Captain MSD hitting Steyn out of the park. He was hitting sixes as he was having a net practice. Never saw MSD under pressure and I knew if Dhoni plays few dot balls initially then he is thinking of a big ending. That's what happened in the end. Poor Ashish Reddy, if the world number one fast bowler was under so much pressure think of the poor lad bowling the last over while MSD striking the ball so well.

  • Sudhir65 on April 25, 2013, 20:13 GMT

Dhoni and his team have done really well in IPL but I wish he would take India to knock out stage of T20 World Cup which he has failed to do in last 3 editions.

  • sathu077 on April 25, 2013, 20:13 GMT

This season badri is not getting any chance. Not his fault.Eiter its like CSK top order does all the work and at the end its time for hitters.. or need not finish the match so send in finishers.. So CSK can try to bring in a domestic player probably an uncapped bowler given the batting depth CSK has and let him have a go in a match before the tournament goes to finishing stages.

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:11 GMT

This IPL FORMAT needs change. At present each team has to play 14 matches. A total of 72 matches. Why is it necessary to play so many games when the deserving teams to be in the last 4 can be decided just after playing 8 or a maximum of 10 matches for each teams.Eight matches are sufficient to judge.

So the size of the event needs reduction.

This would suit the players from abroad especially because they have their National Teams & Domestic cricket also to be looked into.

This needs serious consideration by All cricketBoards& the IPL supremos

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:10 GMT

Am very surprised to see Mike Hussey not being given an ounce of credit for his 26 balls 44. If MSD is the ultimate finisher, then Hussey is the ultimate game setter. He set it up real fine for Chennai tonight and rest was homework. To people who think Dhoni is lucky, well its getting old. We all know fortune favors only the Brave and the Cool. Luck is only a favorable probability, but when it happens again and again, you'll have to develop insight. When someone chooses to be cool when the guy on the other end plays out a maiden he is something don't you think??? CSK's batting line up is so efficient that someone or the other is bound to rise. If not Hussey, its Raina. If not Raina there's a Badri. If not Dhoni there's Sir RJ. Lol they have got Albie Morkel and Bravo on reserves!!

#SRH finally met their true challenge. Bad choices and a brilliant opposition showed them the real boss#

  • on April 25, 2013, 20:08 GMT

The way Dhoni batted today and the responsibility he takes up on his shoulders, is enormous and he delivers almost everytime. Rarely he fails. I wont blame White for this gamble. Sammy was hit all around the ground and Steyn had already finished his quota. Giving Reddy the ball surely was his only other option. Whoever would have been the bowler at the end, it would have been very very tough for them to contain Dhoni. Dhoni is an absolute master-class.

  • ladycricfan on April 25, 2013, 20:05 GMT

Another last over thriller. Another fantastic knock from captain cool Dhoni. Hussey was fantastic to lay the foundation. With KSharma's 4overs costing only 8 runs, CSK had only 16 overs to score their runs. Well done CSK. But death bowling is still a problem for CSK. Dhawan and young Reddy batted really well. 160 was defendable with the bowling attack SRH got. "Catches win matches"and Mishra's drop cost SRH the match. With the bowling attack consisting of Steyn, Sharma, Sharma, Mishra and Perera, I wouldn't be surprised if SRH go on to win the trophy.

Sundhar Mohandas , Not true Only badly bowled yorkers (ones that lack accuracy, swing and pace) can be hit for boundaries by batsmen Getting the perfect yorker is EXTREMELY hard. Few appreciate how tough it is to perfect it

And India briefly occupying no 1 rank in tests has nothing to do with how their batsmen play yorkers.

Hey fans why I'm telling stayn is most overrated bowler is , pepsi IPL up to now , ( accept t'day match ) he got 8 wickets, it's Buvi Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Dinda, Agarwal, Waner, Nadeem, Mash, Gurkeerat. it's only one International player & one domestic batsman & 6 tail enders . Let's see perera's , he got 9 wickets It's Uththappa, Samuels, Arun Karthik, Agarwal, Irfan, Mokel, again Uththappa, Flinch, Nayar. It's 4 times International batsmen, 3 domestic batsmen , one international allrounder & 1 tail ender. SEE THE DIFFERENCE !! with this he's the highest run scorer for SRH it's 140 runs with 150+ strike rate. ( thanks to cricinfo for stats )

If guys think Steyn is one of the best bowlers around, i don't know what to say to you guys... Every bowler has an off day. I remember Kohli beating the living daylights out of Malinga..

SRH def needs to play Sammy. Infact i beleive he needs to captain the team, after all his the Captain of the T20 champions of the world....

  • Ahgg on April 25, 2013, 19:56 GMT

  • JamesSmithee on April 25, 2013, 19:47 GMT

I have much respect for MSD. First thing as a person. He is not a hot tempered person like rest of his team mates. Other thing is his brain. Steyn is the best bowler until you think he is the best bowler. But when someone attacks him he can be one of the worst bowlers. From the first bowl Dhoni tried to attack Styne. India very much lucky to have him as a captain.

  • zeus_kris on April 25, 2013, 19:35 GMT

CSK should bring back Dirk Nannes. The bowling has been pathetic at the front and at the end. Jason Holder is not express quick and doesn't look like one who will take wickets. CSK should also bring in Faf du Plessis in the place of Dwayne Bravo or Chris Morris.

  • JamesSmithee on April 25, 2013, 19:34 GMT

@sameer_warun - camera was focused to the SRH bench. Moody and Kanth were keen to place fielders on correct location. It didn't seem they want to change the bowler or they got surprised by the decision. If I was in that bench and if Dhoni was in the wicket and 22 years old Reddy had the ball I know the result. I don't care to place fielders. But bench feel still enthusiastic.

Yesterday ,Lasit Malinga of Mumbai Indians bowled a crucial last over& tookba very vital wicket also to restrict KKR TO AN IDENTICAL SCORE OF 159 in 20 overs .later on won the match.

Today ,Sunrisers had every chance of winning after Bravo& Jdeja of CSK miserably failed.Bravo even conceded a maiden over to Raran Sharma which should not have happened in the final stage.Dhoni on his own ,however, won the game .this was due to the fact that the World's Best fast Bowler Dale Steyne could not bowl a single Yorker to Dhoni.everyone knows it is difficult to hit Sixes from Yorkers..Then why the World Number one could not bowl a single Yorker.Last Malinga was able to do it.

Or is it that the world number one can not bowl Yorkers at his will or is it he simply forgot to do so? SreedharanMundanat

  • on April 25, 2013, 19:30 GMT

@ Kool_raaf indian bowlers cant bowl yorkers all right. but their batsmen can send the best yorkers over the bowlers head for sure! Thats why they are THE World champions and former Test No.1 side. Obviously Waqar is a legend. No arguments about him.

Class is permanent and form is temporary ...Sanga Vs White....what a captaincy by white !!! Just hand over the match to CSK. Sanga was left out himself due to lack of performance. But De cock looked like a joke in indian pitches and he should be immediately replaced by Sanga. Neither he keeps well nor bats well as 'out of form sangakkara '...... Thisara was not here coz of that chennai problem and he should be ok for the rest of the tournament.HE IS A MUST.Well done CSK and i knew you were going to win.In chasing ,CSK is without a doubt is the best side and nobody could do it as easy as CSK in finale 4 overs.Credit goes to all finishers in CSK team.I thought with SRH they could win .Steyn had a rare off day with bowl and it damages SRH pae attack and ultimately failed to protect 159 runs .White with his decisions should be responsible with that. CSK go !! You are the side to beat..:)

  • hrit on April 25, 2013, 19:13 GMT

CSK is a team which only can be beaten when it bats first. They have so much depth in their batting full of calm pinch hitters who can take them home from a daunting situation. Hussey , Dhoni , Bravo , Jadeja and Morkel. CSK's weakness is its inability to defend. Take IPL 2 Semi finals or the IPL 5 Finals. But again , Dhoni had the utter calmness and ruthlessness to punish SRH for bowling too short to him and the last over gamble was a total waste. Sammy should have bowled for sure.

  • JamesSmithee on April 25, 2013, 19:12 GMT

Yes. Mishra dropped the catch. But still it was SRH match. Unfortunately Steyne and captained leaked the runs. 30 from 12 is a big ask. No one other than Sanga, Styne, Perera, Sammy retain permanent slots in a national team. SRH should find the reason for that. SRH told they have best bowling unit. But they lacks depth bowler like Malinga. Overall Malinga is the best t20 bowler in world cricket. I'll put him ahead of Styne. Also he was attacking bowler. He is the most wicket taker in IPL. SRH must focus on depth bowling.

  • elgenioroshan on April 25, 2013, 19:10 GMT

When Indian Bowlers bowl length balls in the death, people complain a lot but when the World's best bowler bowls continuous short balls on a slow wicket to one of the biggest hitters in the game making his ego get the better of him, I cant see any comments blaming him. So strange. This match was not lost due to last over but due to Steyn bowling short stuff thinking indian batsmen cant whack him. 15 in last over and dhoni on strike was easily CSK's game no matter who bowled. If a non subcontinent player was facing Steyn. then he would have bowled all full length deliveries and SRH would have easily won. I hope Steyn learns his lesson now that there are some indian players who play the pull shot very well and keeps his ego out of the game and bowls according to the situation.

Dhoni is the BOSS. In full flow he doesn't care for any bowlers in the world. Not even steyn. I think it was Dhoni's calculated assault on Steyn and it paid off for Dhoni. SRH thought of Dhoni's assault on Steyn and didn't give ball to sammy. Poor Reddy was put in the firing line and then what do you expect? It was a massacre. Hail Dhoni.

  • Richvii on April 25, 2013, 19:00 GMT

Why Sammy was not given the last over by White! He is more experienced than Reddy and has played internationally! It is a shame that so called "international stars" chicken out when they are asked to perform during critical phase of the game! Secondly, the revelation that Steyn is a stupid bowler was no surprise to me. he did not bowl a single yorker or full length ball to Dhoni. same with Ishant Sharma- he was lucky that Bravos hit did not cross the fence. it is dumb to bowl good length balls during the ' death" phase. And lastly, Mishra definitely needs to do something about his fielding! dropping a sitter and that too of Dhoni is unpardonable act!

  • Sooraj4cricket on April 25, 2013, 18:56 GMT

Spectacular innings from MS Dhoni...YET AGAIN...He has made this a habit. There have been many close matches and many people criticize the CSK for leaving too many too late. But it has to be said that the calming effect of 'mr.sangfroid' MSD seems to have had a wonderful effect on the whole team itself. That is very relevant from the way they remain cool calm & composed even when they require a lot in the last few overs.Their self-belief is amazing and when their mettle is tested, they show a large heart and manage to come out on top.Kudos to Dhoni...What a Captain!!! What a Man !!!

While Navjot Sidhu was lavishing deserving praise to Dhoni in post match analysis, this made me wonder what is left on his agenda. Test series wins in SA & Australia would matter to any Indian captain but there is much simpler or should I say harder task for him - can he lead Jharkhand to Ranji trophy victory, without him they managed QF appearance this year :-). Its good to see that he listens as his promoting himself to no 4 has resulted in CSK doing much better in the first half of IPL. Again today chase was managed quite well. CSK for second match in running needed 46 from last 5 out of which 2 costed just 4.

  • Ahgg on April 25, 2013, 18:50 GMT

it's funny to see the same people who were shouting here for sanga an Perera to be replaced by dekock and sammy now asking for them again. The same people said white was a better captain than sanga after one win. Now they want sanga back. Really funny to see these sentimental people. I say give dekcock another chance and have sammy and Perera come in at 5 and 6 respectively. Drop white and give captaincy to dhawan.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:49 GMT

Dhoni, what brutal power you posses!! The two consecutive sixes of Steyn was the highlight, more so coz the bowler was bowling according to a plan. And such a cool head, he showed no emotion despite the other guys wasting balls at the closing stages. Its beyond my understanding why Sangakkara isnt playing, he should Open and he should keep as well. Like Jayawardane, Sachin, Dravid, he can cash runs playing orthodox shots in the powerplays. He has played some fine innings for Punjab in the past playing at the top. Quinton De Cock looks pitiful. He hasn't even managed to stay for 10 deliveries in any of the matches. I didn't heard what they said at the toss but I hope Perera was not picked because of fitness issues. Else even his axe doesn't makes sense.

Dont know why ashish was chosen for last over when he didnt bowl at all in the game till then, shouldve gone with sammy. But a good job by dhawan & ashish to bring the total to 159 when wickets fell early. Sometimes it is annoying to watch srh bowlers continuously bowling length & width balls. Havent seen any bowler or lbw by the fast bowlers. Surprised that steyn doesnt bowl many yorkers, he gets hit for 4s & 6s so might as well take a chance and try the yorker. White is a decent captain but most days he looks so awkward while batting out there. Its as if he doesnt have a bat that is long enough or something trying to poke it away instead of swinging freely. Experimentation with de kock, have to see how he does next year. I think it might be time to drop white & give sammy a string of games. Lineup for remaining matches. Dhawan>Aksath>Perera>Sanga>White/Sammy>Patel/Vihari>Ashish>Mishra>Steyn>Ishant>K.Sharma. Best lineup i think, great performance by dhawan on return n cant wait 4 more

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:47 GMT

@Gamunu Dhammika Rajapaksha : Dhoni is stronh to pace bowlers, when it comes to leg,,,,,helicopter shot .....and dhoni's weak point is Short pich ball....(in his career starting, dhoni's tour to SA)..so as SAn,steyn posed a short pich,,, but mighty mishra , dropped the catch....

  • JamesSmithee on April 25, 2013, 18:45 GMT

I don't think the decision was made by White. Karan won the match for SRH but others couldn't keep it. I think decision made by someone in the bench (Moody or Kanth). How can they be this much silly ? 22 old part timer bowling to MSD who hits sixes against Styne in last over. He can send thousands dot balls yorkers in the nets. But under such a big crowed no way. Fortunately until now SRH bowled to tale. Now they got the real taste of quality power hitting. From next match Thisara and Sharma should forcus on bowling last 4 overs of the innings. Dale should at least tried to bowl at 130 case. For me MAM is Karan Sharma. How did he ended up with econ of 2 in a beautiful batting wicket ? He bowled brilliant to left handed too.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:44 GMT

I am disappointed with CSK's performance today. When SRH was 38/3, CSK should bundle out SRH under 100. SRH is the weakest batting team.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:42 GMT

our commentators, experts, legends, even minimum knowledge kids also says only one thing.. catches wins matches.. we cant expect 10 jonty rhodes,, in a team but we should keep quick and tall fielders at boundary..today wonder is steyn went for runs .. others bowled ok,, this will be a lesson.. SRH should keep in mind .. no need to preserve steyn this is t20 format .. anybody can go for runs in such times ..just focusing on basics...good luck.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:41 GMT

Steyn is a rhythm bowler.Period. And when it seems that he doesn't get the support from the fielders that his bowling deserves, Steyn drifts off. Give him support guys, you just can't drop a sitter like that and then you will see what he can do.

  • Kolaa.srifan on April 25, 2013, 18:41 GMT

Lots of comments on white's captaincy and he was overated way ahead of sanga. White himself given the answer to that. No chennai matches so sanga ,thisara, steyn should play next 8 mathces, hopefully sammy will get next match. But Macculum is my choice as SRH haven't a good offie.

  • mailatpsa on April 25, 2013, 18:39 GMT

Vijay once again fails with bat, bravo also fails if comes up. What spells from sharma in 16th over ends with 4 over 8 runs(So csk 152 in 15.4 over). SRH gets 59 in lost 4 over. But anythink goes wrong but CSK ROCKS.

  • vijay2pvk on April 25, 2013, 18:39 GMT

Catches wins matched. Pls don't say dhoni lucky. It's mishra's mistake. Even csk lost few matches becoz of missing crucial catches. You should c how our captain cool handled that pressure situation. He kept calm when there was a huge pressure on him. He gave respect to very good spinners of SRH n he started to attack fast bowlers.

Stayn is most over rated bowler in T20's , munaf patel is better than stayn !

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:37 GMT

I was almost had heart attack during the last over.. How many times csk leave it to the last over.. As a csk fan please do not do that again and again.....

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:37 GMT

Congratulation to Dhoni for making victory possible after tthe dismal failure of Bravo and Sir Jadeja. Hats off to his patience. When bravo conceded a maidan over I felt like pulling him from the field and what followed from Jadeja was ridiculous. I am sorry to say this.

  • Cricket_Fan_And_Analyst on April 25, 2013, 18:37 GMT

In this close win , let's not forget Shikhar Dhawan. Here is a man coming out of injury , played a fabulous and almost match winning innings. He is looking good to be playing for India in all three formats.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:36 GMT

Doesn't anyone of you think that the Ban on SL players did give CSK a Unfair advantage ? with one of our main Performer Parera Missing ? Am pretty sure he would have added to the total a bit more and his Econ. would have been way better than Sammy !

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 25, 2013, 18:34 GMT

Disgusting captaincy from white. He neither bats properly or captains properly. Some people said Sammy would be match-winner, what nonsense! (Econ-10 per over and no wickets to show for it). Can't blame Mishra for the dropped catch when your captain places the most poor fielder in the deep square with steyn bowling short. De Kock certainly needs to be kicked out. The biggest surprise is with Waqar being the coach none of these bowlers know how to bowl a yorker. Sanga and Perera must play next match.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:32 GMT

@Rajapaksha: Steyn is a beast in test cricket while Malinga retired from tests to prolong his ODI career and tests are pretty much a bar to rate cricketers. Having said that, Malinga is a better bowler in the limited overs format.

  • Kolaa.srifan on April 25, 2013, 18:31 GMT

Realy realy bad bowling by steyn. I rarely see him done well in the depth. He is realy bad choice to bowl in depth. Sanga use his 3 overs usualy before 10th(this year as well as last) because he know the strength of steyn.

  • visitha on April 25, 2013, 18:30 GMT

bad captaincy from White, Sammy should have balled that last over.

  • kirikat on April 25, 2013, 18:29 GMT

This game teach lot of lessons to SRH... 1) Dkock - Is a nothing player in indian conditions 2) You cant compare sanga's captaincy with ill performing white's captaincy 3) Thisara is the best allrounder that SRH has and ect...... White should be drop for sanga and dkock for Thisara... sanga and sammy should be have a run of two matches and weeker one should be drop for McCullom.... Sanga should keep the wicket and leed the side.... Still have the faith in sunrises... love them....

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:29 GMT

Is it just me or do we all get the feeling that there are just too many matches in this IPL tournament? For the umpteenth time it's the same script: Dhoni takes CSK over the line. Maybe Dhoni is just too good for IPL.

  • warun_sharma on April 25, 2013, 18:27 GMT

Ahhha ! WHAT a Captain Cameran White is ! WOW !!! achcha bowling change !! what a hitter but not in AUS T20 team ! Dear SRH, please keep white as a captain ! sure u can bounce back, but not to UP, to the bottom ! hey fans now realize form is temporary but class is permanent !

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:25 GMT

Inspire of a late burst from Sunrisers to post a reasonable winning score, the victory belonged to the Home Team of MSDhoni.he is a real captain not only wise & efficient in executing shots but at the crucial juncture lucky as well. Despite the failure of both Bravo& Jadeja unusually at the crucial situation,Dhoni managed a win with efforts of his own.Sixes & fours born at his will to post a honorable win much to the surprise of Dale Steyne& Sunrisers.now Csk is second behind RCB IN THE PONTS tally. One of these two teams is likely to win the crown of Pepsi Season6 IPL. SREEDHARANMUNDANAT

  • vijay2pvk on April 25, 2013, 18:22 GMT

Wow..Wat a nail biting finish again with lot of pressure on captain cool when other end fails for running between wickets..good bowling by SRH spinners which build this pressure situation once again for CSK...Well played SRH..Finally the team which handled pressure situation won the match..

  • mailatpsa on April 25, 2013, 18:21 GMT

Thanks to sharma and bravo in 16th over for intersting game, otherwise it gets bored

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:17 GMT

ha ha ha CSK is really lucky. Mishra dropped the simplest catch from dhoni.

  • visitha on April 25, 2013, 18:16 GMT

May be steyn is worlds best fast bowler, but he is also the most over rated bowler in T20's, sanga , sammy ,thisara ,steyn for the next match.

  • priceless1 on April 25, 2013, 18:14 GMT

SHR please drop Steyn in the next game or finish him up front , he seem to be worse than Indian bowlers when it comes to bowling at the depth

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:14 GMT

everybody saying that dale steyn is far better than lasith malinga but why can't he bowl a single yorker to MS Dhoni in his last over???

  • deathstar01 on April 25, 2013, 18:13 GMT

Very bad captaincy from White, very very bad. The last was too nervous to bowl to Dhoni.

  • Jadejafan on April 25, 2013, 18:13 GMT

Dhoni is too good and Jadeja what happened? lool!!! Dale Steyn

  • AneYako on April 25, 2013, 18:11 GMT

What nightmarish captaincy from White. If his bowler rotations and field setting wasn't bad enough he had to go for that choice for the last over. Facepalm. Sammy was pretty much useless with the bowl too but he should have been the only option for that last over but nope. It's like they 'wanted' to lose. Shame of the SRH captaincy and management. Steyn can't bowl a yorker to save his life either, what a let down. Hats off to K Sharma, bowled brilliantly.

  • on April 25, 2013, 18:10 GMT

I don't know what to say, thoroughly disappointed with the captaincy. Why would someone give the last over to a bowler who has never bowled when an international all-rounder is there to bowl. It was their game and they threw it away.

  • priceless1 on April 25, 2013, 17:52 GMT

Steyn is a over rated bowler in T20's , if SRH loose this game he should the the full blame

  • coldcoffee123 on April 25, 2013, 17:32 GMT

It is insane to play any game, let alone cricket, in April-May in India, with temperatures touching 45 deg C. Whatever happened to the off season, when players would mend to their injuries, work on their technique and diet and come out fresh for the next season?

  • BRUTALANALYST on April 25, 2013, 17:28 GMT

Sammy needs to be batting a place or 2 higher why was Mishra up order what a waste ? Also De Cock continues to look like a rabbit in headlights I would rather have Perrera in side and allow Patel to keep, with Dhawan back opening both all rounders Perrera and Sammy offer more to the side than De Cock.

  • CSreekumar on April 25, 2013, 16:55 GMT

Hussey is turning it ON. CSK seems easily chasing down the target. What happened to CSK's usual nail-biting finish?

  • on April 25, 2013, 16:39 GMT

  • warun_sharma on April 25, 2013, 16:26 GMT

WOW what a inform batsman this De Kock is ! SRH please keep him till the tournament end & white ( what a good captain ) will be done the rest then we will get good chance to qualify last 4 teams - KIX fan

  • on April 25, 2013, 16:22 GMT

Next game Decock and white out... perera and sanga in... now please dont remove sammy.... apart from 2 matches against rcb white has been doing basically nothing....

  • Ankamsiva on April 25, 2013, 16:17 GMT

Now, some things went good and some didn't yet for the SRH. The main concern for them being not able to pass 120-130 vanished out due to an excellent performance by Dhawan(not to mention Aashish contributed too). Picking up Sammy into the side shouldn't be discussed yet coz he's not sent in for batting a long innings he is expected to make a quick 25-30 and I guess he had done it today. If Sammy bowls well then I think he has done his job. Now it's the time for the bowlers to charge in and win for them. I don't think DeKock should be continued anymore and white should find his form soon.

  • on April 25, 2013, 15:38 GMT

As usual Sunrisers seems not find their way! person like Sanga is missing here badly. I have no idea why these fellows left out him. Evn if he took the decision its a bad decision. IF you see other players including Cameron White did not score and contributed yet. They just depended on their bowlers like steyn and mishra and Allrounder thisara. They just taken them with the momentum gained from first few wins which lead by Sanga/
