Big Picture

At the start of the IPL season, few would have tipped Sunrisers Hyderabad to be one of the four teams that qualify for the playoffs. Now, however, their prospects in their first season have boiled down to one simple task in the very last league game, against Kolkata Knight Riders: a win. Royal Challengers Bangalore, who beat Chennai Super Kings on Saturday, have drawn level with Sunrisers on 18 points, making this a must win-match for Sunrisers.

Sunrisers stand out when compared to the other teams that have already entered the playoffs or are competing to get there. Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and even Royal Challengers Bangalore have strong batting units while Rajasthan Royals are a team that is greater than the sum of its parts. Sunrisers, however, find themselves on the brink of qualification simply on the strength of their bowling. That strength was on display again when they defended 136 against Rajasthan Royals; Dale Steyn, Amit Mishra and Thisara Perera kept a vice-like grip on the run-rate. More importantly, for most of the season when the bowlers have not been defending small totals, they've restricted the opposition to scores that their batting has managed to chase down.

For Knight Riders, this game is about redeeming as much of their poor season as they can, while doing Royal Challengers a favour. And, as Royal Challengers captain Virat Kohli cheekily put it at the post-match presentation, he'd be happy to give Gautam Gambhir a call to request him to win the match.

In the spotlight

The Sunrisers' top order hasn't always given the team good starts. Among teams playing in this IPL, the Sunrisers top order (No. 1-3) has scored the minimum runs - 833 from 15 matches, so far. It's a statistic that will worry them, given the level of competition in the playoffs.

Stats and trivia

  • Dale Steyn has bowled 793 dot balls in IPL so far, second only after Praveen Kumar and Irfan Pathan.
  • Ishant Sharma is fourth on the list of bowlers to have conceded the most runs in this season, with 435 runs from 15 matches. Thisara Perera is close behind at 431 runs from 14 matches
  • Sunil Narine needs four wickets to reach 50 IPL wickets. He also leads the list of bowlers to have taken four wickets or more in an innings the most number of times, having done so four times in the IPL.

Quotes

"They are a proud team. They've got a point to prove and they want to finish the season on a high. We have to prepare well. We have to execute in the three disciplines to make sure we finish with a win."
Sunrisers Hyderabad coach, Tom Moody

SRH have to get together & play as a team in all departments of the game to win the final match against KKR. It is a toss up between Sanga & white for Captaincy because both are equally poor in reliable batting. KKR have 3 pace bowlers in Kallis, Balaji & Lee. & spinners in Narine & Senanayke. SRH have their 3 pacemen in Steyn, Perera & Ishant Sharma & spinners in Karan Sharma & Mishra. Although SRH bowling is OK, they have a liability in Ishant Sharma. In batting White or Sanga (who ever plays) must put up a good score. Dhawan & Patel must also give the side a good start. Sammy, Perera, Samantray & Mishra need to make a contribution of at least a quick 20. KKR have a strong batting line up led by Gambhir, Kallis, Pathan & Bisla. So it boils down to fielding. Which ever side hangs on to the catches wins. It is going to be an interesting battle. SRH have won all but one home game. They MUST win to qualify for Playoff. KKR is playing as the spoilers! Win or loss they are already eliminated

kkr will beat srh so thet we can see kohli and gayle in finals and winning ipl 6. kohli is best young cricketer in this world and an ipl crown as captain will serve him well. srh plz drop sanga and perera, both have underperformed and cost games . play sammy he is better allrounder than perera.want kkr to win big to numb some pain for finishing 7th after winning last time. they overachieved last year and this year they occupy their true place

SRH has to learn beating teams like CSK, MI,RCB and KKR. They were terrible against CSK both in home and away also. They beat MI in home and lost to MI because of that great knock by Pollard. So, they have to prove that they are better than RCB. SRH have won more away games compared to RCB. It is shame that RCB has all the good players in their side and now they are expecting SRH to lose,so that they can qualify for play offs. CSK did not play well to their potential in the yesterday game against RCB, so I wish KKR too play the same manner against SRH. Anyhow in one line SRH has to win this game and tell all the teams that beware of them. No big name players even then their performance will let RCB to go for play offs. Shame on RCB to be in such a situation.

Hyderabad team have won only 2 matches against KKR outside India. They are yet to win a match in India. KKR is going to win this match easily and will maintain the record perfectly. Congrats KKR in advance for victory.

  • on May 19, 2013, 10:49 GMT

@maddy20: If batting prowess of RCB and MI faltered because of the horrible wickets, then how come such a weak SRH batting could cross the line 7 out of 8 times.

  • Slesh on May 19, 2013, 10:17 GMT

Ok now its the must win time for SRH.. they need to look forward and do some changes not only for this match but also for the playoffs(if they get selected). 1.Remove Vihari.yes you need someone to anchor the innings..but at the same time with the strike rate at least of 115-120. not 91!! he is not a T20 material.let Samantray to do that job.(look at his last innings) Dhawan can give that one over of OS. 2.let Sanga to captain the team here after.his captaincy will be the key factor.also he should open the innings so he can settle down and also he will be able to tackle Senanayake today as he know a lot about him.i am sure either way Sanga gonna be useful than white. 3.Please let Perera to bat up the order.he is surely a better batsmen than a pinch hitter.he can give the innings like 50(25) which the boost SRH badly need in their batting line up. 1.Patel 2.Sanga 3.Dhawan 4.Samantray 5.Perera 6.Sammy 7.Karan 8.Reddy/Ankit 9.Mishra 10.Steyn 11.Sharma Go SRH GO!!

  • on May 19, 2013, 9:45 GMT

SRH should go with Sanga considering the spin heavy KKR bowling attack. White will be clueless against Sachi n Narine. They really need a plan to counter the Sachi-Narine factor. Sammy will also struggle big time here. Hope SRH make it the play-offs.

RCB boys will be watching the game and hoping that gambhir will make no mistake if KKR win the toss and choose to bat first maybe there is some chance for them but SRH can qualify only with strength of their bowling (if win the the toss and choose to bat )by the way I'm from Hyderabad but a big fan of RCB 4ever

@Sampath De Silva i disagree, at the moment Sanga is in position he just cannot get bat on ball , so better they stick with White coz he is a good striker of the ball

Now SRH will realize the importance of NRR. hence it is always recommended to score runs at a good rate so that NRR comes handy in situations like this. Unfortunately they do not have good hitters. probably in the next auction, they should hire 1 or 2 hard hitters. Best of luck SRH!!!

  • on May 19, 2013, 8:41 GMT

Sanga should keep today, patel did so many mistakes as a keeper

  • The Incredible Raj on May 19, 2013, 8:26 GMT

if the eliminator game played in Hyderabad, i would prefer SRH in Play off. But it is in delhi.....so RCB have good record in delhi and also kohli performance is good in delhi. SRH are strong in their home ground with the help of their huge fan and the pitch which is well suited for their bowlers. So in todays match if SRH bats First they wil score around 110-125(because of their batting and also bowling attach of KKR which is as same as SRH) and if gambir forget's everything of past about Kohli, and contribute well. Then KKR will win.

If KKR bats First they score 130-150(Because of their batting form like pathan, ten doescate, gambir), then SRH will Lose(Because of batsem like vihari who has got 91 strike rate). So every thing is dependent on TOSS and also SRH Bowling. So My team for play off is RCB;-)

  • Allen.Arendtsz on May 19, 2013, 8:08 GMT

Sanga should be picked today, as he would know better, on how to tackle this kind of situation....and i strongly believe that he is a much better captian than White as well....Sanga is one of the most experienced players in the side and he should lead from the front today....Go SHR!!!!

  • deathstar01 on May 19, 2013, 7:59 GMT

though i am an SRH fan i did not mind with RCB's win yesterday. Things are at least in our hands and we have to prove it. SRH bowling is no concern. They can hold out or bowl out the KKR for sure. A good batting performance like we did against MI few days ago will surely see us as winners in this match. Peronally, i dont have that much respect for KKR batting except for Tendo.

  • on May 19, 2013, 7:58 GMT

Cheer for the underdogs. Cheer for the those who have relied on team spirit rather for those who relied on individual brilliance (read big bucks). Each of SRH wins has come from contribution from one or the other lessser known player - yes, you had Dale Steyn bowling his heart out most days, Amit's Mishra mersmering spells on some days but it needed the efforts of Vihari, Karan Sharma, Ashish Reddy, Parthip and Biplab to carry them home past the finishing line. I haven't forgotten Perera or Cameron White - but they as expensive overseas players were expected to contribute. All but one - sorry but have to name Sanga who hasn't been but a shadow of his old self. Go Sunrisers!

  • maddy20 on May 19, 2013, 7:58 GMT

Strength of bowling? They stand there because of their consistent preparation of horrible pitches.130 has been crossed only twice. What does that tell ya? Even the batting prowess of RCB and MI faltered because of the horrible wickets!

  • on May 19, 2013, 7:43 GMT

feel sorry for RCB fans here .. they cant accept the fact that their team which "they" consider the greatest , full of superstars is fighting with a team like SRH with one superstar(steyn) for a playoff spot..for al those shouting RCB be in the playoffs.. we have already seen what they do going into the knockouts .. Gayle fails in the knockout stages and they hand the opposition the match and come back .. its better of to see SRH who atleast fight for their cause ...

  • on May 19, 2013, 7:38 GMT

Senanayake is bowling very well and Guti is using him within first 5 overs....I suggest Sunrisers to pick sanga instead of white and let him to open with dhawan....He is the best man who can play Senanayake......

  • Sandeep_Maddu on May 19, 2013, 7:36 GMT

SRH fate is in their own hands while RCB's fate is in the hands of others......SRH is very likely to win against KKR......RCB can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye.

  • sweetspot on May 19, 2013, 7:28 GMT

@VijayaBhaskarDK - We saw how well Gayle and Kohli play outside of Bangalore in general. Some of us like to see a good bowling team come to the fore. RCB is very one dimensional and has reached this point of potential elimination through their own non efforts. How can they be any more deserving than any other team in this situation?

  • STOCK11 on May 19, 2013, 7:27 GMT

SRH easily win this contest, RCB better pack your bags.

  • on May 19, 2013, 7:18 GMT

One thing i am happy with is ... the qualifiers ,eliminator and final matches will be held in delhi and kolkatta... where the bowling conditions will be similar to hydrabad rather than the more flat wickets like chennai and bangalore.Hence... bowling will have some edge. If SRH can boost up their batting power by replacing vihari with some other batsman who can play at a better S/R, SRH can put up more decent score and will be a big security for the bowlers to go for a bigger assault on the opposition team.RCB may be a terrific batting side with gayle ,kohli and AB deviliers. But apart from these 3, they don't have a quality batsmen.Coming to bowling..... unpredictable and unreliable i can say. They don't have the required bowling resources to play in delhi and kolkatta. KKR has such resources but sadly they are out of the game.Lets see. SRH can win against KKR today.Only thing is kallis, pathan should be removed as quickly as possible.

  • Narabavi on May 19, 2013, 7:01 GMT

Sanga or white, whoever the captain he should use Sammy more often in bowling. It's useless to play him as a specialist batsman specially against team like KKR because he is horrible against quality spin.

  • on May 19, 2013, 6:02 GMT

@vijayabhaskard we srh has beat 6teams out of 7teams in home, gayle can't hit sixes against team like sunrisers he can slaughter against weak or uncapped bowlers. We have got worlds fastest bowler, highest dot ball bowler steyngunn, highest number of hatrick bowler Amit mishra. You people even lost a match against Punjab whom we beat twice, we lost really close matches

  • mailatpsa on May 19, 2013, 5:55 GMT

Now SRH need 4 wins in a row win the title. Its tuf ask for SRH. CSK needs 2 wins in row for 3rd time winner. I expet RCB through playoff. 4 teams have indian capitan

  • kristee on May 19, 2013, 5:24 GMT

Perhaps Pakistan and SRH testify cricket is more about bowling, even this format. Fielding and batting often let them down; still they survive. Maybe their bowling too is terrible in patches. But it's lead by one, if not two, game-changer(s). Perhaps T20 rules need to be modified so as to allow 1/2 bowlers to bowl 5 overs each.

  • on May 19, 2013, 3:35 GMT

@VijayaBhaskarDK, FYI cricket is not always about hitting. Good cricket is when there is a balance between bat and ball. It is an achievement by SRH that they came this close based on just bowling and some supporting batting. I say achievement because they don't have the same resources as some bigger teams. Whoever has more points, they deserve the place whether it is SRH or RCB. Just because RCB can hit more sixes doesn't mean they deserve the place more than SRH. It doesn't matter how they got the points (within the rules), be it batting or bowling. I prefer a final between RR and SRH because those are the teams that are actually grooming domestic talent which was the main purpose of IPL.

A cricket lover usually wants a good fight between bat and ball.

  • on May 19, 2013, 3:30 GMT

@vijayaBhaskarBk---if you are bangalore royal fans go ahead praise your team ....just because chris gayle and kohli are orange cap contenders they cant be moved to paly off....play offs based on team performance not indiviual ...if srh deserves a place to be in play offs..for their hardwork by the team.....srh does not have any fancy big player except dale steyn llike other franchiers .....they given the best every match,...i hope SRH will go to play off....make slap on attitube kohli.....

SRH will add a different simension to the play offs. In this version of the game which is merciless on bowlers, it is always good to see a well disciplined and highly effective bowling unit. Will be pleasing to see Steyn, Mishra & Co. take on the batting might of other teams in the play offs. Go SRH!!!!

  • on May 19, 2013, 2:01 GMT

Gayle & Virat Co can rest in peace, SRH gonna win this match

@vijayabhaskardk, As a cricket lover everyone also wants to see "The God of T20 fast bowling steyn gun in the playoffs" to ignite the party

  • arun105Citt on May 19, 2013, 0:22 GMT

RCB will be more competitive than SRH considering Qualifier and eliminator matches are to be played in Delhi. Kohli always gives a good knock when it is needed but fingers crossed remembering what happened to India in Australia tri-series after a good knock by Kohli.

  • aletheia on May 18, 2013, 23:49 GMT

As a cricket lover first and SRH fan next, its a win-win for me tonight. If KKR wins, then we got to see more of Gayle,Kohli,AB,Zak in the playoffs. However a win for KKR is difficult against SRH bowlers. If SRH wins, then its going to be a battle of other teams against SRH bowling stalwarts like Steyn and Mishra.Parthiv and Dhawan should play a big innings today with Dhawan being an attacking player,Parthiv should aim to stay till the 15th over. He should realize that he is the senior most Indian batsman in SRH and cannot throw away his wicket.SRH should definitely consider shuffling their batting order as per the situation to keep always a stike rate greater than 100.All the best.

  • on May 18, 2013, 22:59 GMT

All support for SRH. I'd rather watch a team which has bowlers shining than a team which relies on three batsmen to bail them out every time. Give me Steyn's pace, Mishra's spin, Ishant/ Perera's seam any day over Vinay Kumar and R P Singh's good for nothing bowling.

  • on May 18, 2013, 22:40 GMT

Even though RCB is my favourite team,I'll have to say that SRH deserves it more. They have fought very hard for this.

  • on May 18, 2013, 22:22 GMT

Other than Chris Gayle and Kohli, RCB has no fire power, but SRH is collective effort from a bunch of players emerging players which is good thing for national l cricket....My gut feeling says SRH will make it to finals for sure....All the best Team Hyderabad,...I want to see Chennai and Hyderabad in finals...

  • on May 18, 2013, 22:13 GMT

May not be intentional but CSK has been making it tougher for SRH to go through to the play-off, when RR,RCB and MI were fighting to get into Play-off CSK lost to Mumbai badly and brought them to comfortable position, and then won with SRH with a huge margin scoring above 200 on a pitch were no team is able to score more than 140, pushing SRH down in points table……now losing to RCB is cherry in the cake….. SRH has been able to pull all their critical matches and I am sure they will do it against KKR in front of their home crowd…….Watch out for Dhawan, Sammy, Mishra and not to forget Steyn Gunnnnn………. If SRH wins they deserve to be in Top 4 as SRH has played much better cricket with the kind of resources they have when compare to RCB. SRH will be tough to beat in Delhi and Kolkatta bcz the conditions suite them more than RCB, Gayle was a big flop in KKR team, he can play only on flat tracks… We will see Sun rising in Hyderabad at 8:00 PM and travel to Delhi and Kolkatta…..

  • cooljack_143 on May 18, 2013, 21:48 GMT

SRH deserve to get into play offs with their NEVER SAY DIE attitude..It will be more interesting when top teams play against Bowlers like STEYN and that is called Challenge.else it will be BOOM BOOM mindless power hitting BATSMEN GAME!!!!! So if you all want to watch GOOD GAME OF CRICKET CHEER FOR SRH !!!!!!!!! Period..if you just want power hitting might as well watch BASEBALL...

  • on May 18, 2013, 21:31 GMT

@vijaybhaskarDK - Just like the batting of SRH isn't that great, the bowling of RCB is very poor. Cricket is not only a batsman's game. One also loves to see teams defending low totals woth their great bowling.

If RCB has GAYLE, then SRH has STEYN and one doesn't need to tell what a great bowler he is and what kind of performance he has put in IPL.

A real cricket lover would never differentiate players on the basis of whether they bat or bowl. A 5-wkt haul is as good as a hundred.

  • on May 18, 2013, 21:26 GMT

Before the start of the tournament I didnt they SRH would do well but it has been the bowling that has won the team games. For their highest run scorer to be below 250 runs at #30 position on most runs scored. It is a surprise they even won many games. I am expecting them to lose tomorrow unless both sides of team come out blazing with the bat and ball as if they lose the NRR is lower than RCBs & they will not make it on that alone. 18 points any other year would secure a place in the top 4. I hope the team gets a good batsmen next year, indian would be preferred as no need to shuffle overseas slots. Though white/sanga can be dropped with sammy leading the team & getting a good batsmen. JP Duminy is good but he is no gayle/miller hes more like hussey, will contribute but at 125SR. Also please dont let vihari bat that high, it will slow the total score down. 234 runs off 257 balls, thats 23 balls or almost 4 overs he wasted batting at below 100SR in 15 matches! We need batsmen 2 perform

  • VijayaBhaskarDK on May 18, 2013, 20:57 GMT

Everyone need a good battle in the playoffs with great hittings. When compared to SRH, RCB is the best team to deserve the play off place. As noone likes to see the poor batting from SRH. As a cricket lover everyone wants to see "The God of T20" chris gayle in the playoffs to ignite the party. The Orange cap contenders Gayle and Kholi should move to playoffs. KKR beat the SRH with Sunil nariane & Sena Nayake.

  • SurlyCynic on May 18, 2013, 20:56 GMT

White is doing well as captain. But surely there must be a better Indian T20 batsman than Vihari. After 15 innings this season he has a strike rate of 91!!!!!

  • on May 18, 2013, 20:21 GMT

White is doing well as captain. But surely there must be a better Indian T20 batsman than Vihari. After 15 innings this season he has a strike rate of 91!!!!!

Even though RCB is my favourite team,I'll have to say that SRH deserves it more. They have fought very hard for this.
