Delhi Daredevils have made a swap with Pune Warriors India, exchanging New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor for former Indian fast bowler Ashish Nehra.

The Warriors had eight overseas players going into the 2013 auction. On auction day, the franchise bought three more overseas players - Michael Clarke, Ajantha Mendis and Kane Richardson - to reach the limit of 11 overseas players. ESPNcricinfo learned the Warriors released South African fast bowler Alfonso Thomas to make space for Taylor in their overseas player quota.

Taylor had been signed by Daredevils for an undisclosed fee in February 2012 from Rajasthan Royals. Warriors will be Taylor's fourth IPL team, after he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first three seasons.

Sushanto Roy, managing director of Sahara Adventure Sports Ltd, which owns the Warriors, said Taylor will bolster their batting, "We are elated to have a batsman like Ross Taylor in our ranks. He will add muscle, panache and of course, experience, to our middle order in the forthcoming season."

This will be Nehra's second spell with the Daredevils, as he was previously part of the squad during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He produced his best IPL performance during the 2009 season in South Africa, where he took 19 wickets from 13 matches.

In 2011 Nehra was bought by Pune Warriors India for $850,000 during the January player auction. However, he was unable to play the entire 2011 season because of a finger injury he had picked up during the World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan. He returned next year and took 11 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 36.54.

"Ashish Nehra will constitute an integral part of our bowling attack in the 2013 season," TA Sekar, head of cricket at Delhi Daredevils, said. "We were the best team at the league stage in 2012, and with a player like him around, we are confident that we will go the distance."

As far as the team is considered a good swap but Delhi is need of a genuine Indian spinner where after IPL-3 we are not having up to IPL-3 Amit Mishra was there who is a genuine turner of the ball. Likewise we should have a genuine spinner anyway fingers crossed on Shahbaz Nadeem and Pawan Negi hope they both stand par and do something for Delhi........ Nehra replacement over Taylor is a good move as we already have most of the batting stalwarts.....

It's a good move by both teams. When in forms, Taylor is one of the most dangerous batsmen in the world. Pune will only benefit from having his experience and explosive batting in the middle order. It's also a good move by Delhi. Even though Nehra can be expensive and inconsistent, he is still an experienced campaigner. He has done well for Delhi in the first couple of years. Delhi already got Mahela, Warner, KP & Morkel who will feature in the playing XI, so it made no sense to pay a lot of money for Taylor. When KP goes on international duty, Ryder & Mendis are there to take over. Delhi needed an Indian seamer to backup Morkel and Irfan, so they got Nehra.

Quite intresting swap.!! Considering the batting powerhouse DD has, they're right to leave Taylor. But taking Nehra in? doesnt seem good to me. They already have good Indian pace options - Umesh, Aaron, Irfan,Ajit. Its spinning dept that they're lacking in. Botha n J.Mendis arent big turners. An Indian spinner would've prove more beneficiary than a pacer. For PWI, taking Taylor in seems a very good move at first. But looking at their sqaud, a question arises - Do they really need an overseas player? They already have Samuels, S.Smith, Thomas, Clarke, Wright, Mathews n K.Richardson ($700k lad.!). And Taylor wont be present for full season. Instead they too should have opt for an Indian batter. A wicket-keeper batsman would be a good choise considering Uthappa isnt a genuine keeper.

Pune warriors is the most ridiculous team in the IPL....their problem is not with the talent...but with the surplus of the talented players like clarke, smith, samuels, thomas, graeme smith, luke wright etc.....bit funny in the case of Taylor too...this is his 3rd IPL team from 2011 along with RP Singh....hope he could have played in all IPL teams :P.....

alfonso thomas of pune is out of the team that is why the pune swapped taylor for nehra......fast bowler out....and the swapped another fast bowler for a batsman...is it a right move????????????

@Gappistan....Hahahaha Yeah mayb thatswhy BCB is not going to give him the NOC, although he could have been available for 2-3 matches before the ZIM tour. BTW Ross Taylor is a good swap, but might not be as effective as Tamim.

@saifur.raffael: Sure, Pune management will ensure that he will warm the bench, this season too.

TNAmarkFromIndia Delhi's batting was even more overloaded when the brought Jesse Ryder. Delhi are not really losing anything as on current form Ryder is playing a lot better than Taylor and is available for the entire competition.

I prefer Siddharth Koul over Aashih Nehra for the Delhi Playing eleven

Posted by saifur.raffael on (February 13, 2013, 6:05 GMT)

Tamim will not play the IPL.

both teams are in win win situation as they got what they wanted!!

Its not sure that Aaron and Yadav would be fit in time ... So they had to get one quickie at any cost and Nehra being a Delhi player would know the conditions lot better

Umesh- Injured Varun- Injured Irfan- Injured Good move by Delhi getting a local experienced seamer. Taylor have no chance with Delhi team as KP/Jaya/Warner and Morkerl plays in the 11

Guys Varon Aaron is out for Full 2013 season it was confirmed Offically in 3rd Feb Auction... and DD has made a Very SMART Move If Ashish Nehra is Fit then DD have an Experienced Fast bowler in their rank

Posted by   on (February 12, 2013, 17:37 GMT)

Pune warriors have already 11 foreign players...hw cld they buy ross???? I think Mitch Marsh will be nt availble fr this season due 2 injury....bt its nt officially confirmed that Mitch z out of IPL2013..

Posted by   on (February 12, 2013, 17:21 GMT)

Good one by delhi daredevils.New Zealand are going to tour England and Nehra would be available for the whole season. He could play all matches as he is a local player, smart move!

Posted by   on (February 12, 2013, 17:13 GMT)

Biggest mistake DD made was not to retain anyone last to last year! they left gambhir, nannes, devilliers Dishan etc and had nothing that year! Infact they did not retain David Warner that year! and then bought him again in the auction at a price more than what they would have incurred if they would have retained him! Like the stupid decisons DD management makes off the field, They have an incredible captain in Sehwag (Irrespective of Jayawardene being there) He hardly remembers who is the XI on the day and whose overs are left! When he performs he does.. but that is twice in whole season. and then comes the BAD luck of DD. With all given great players, great league match performances, great bowling, great batting, great fielding.. Nothing clicks for them in knockouts...

DD are the chokers of IPL.

THEY will never WIN an IPL!

I dont understand why Delhi have swapped with nehra instead of taylor, they already Umesh, agarkar, irfan and varon all these guys have represented india, they should have gone with spinner.they already have strong pace attack by morkel, russell etc..these is a foolish move from Delhi side

@shashi00123, @sonu77....I think One of the foreigner in Pune may got unavailable for this Edition. This made Pune to sign Ross Taylor. There ll not be any other chances other than this.

Posted by   on (February 12, 2013, 15:48 GMT)

worst move by DD ... Ashish Nehra for Taylor ?? :P ..

Posted by Kohli--The_Messi_of_Cricket on (February 12, 2013, 15:48 GMT)

Exactly. PWI already have 11 overseas players. Taylor is No.12.

Posted by sonu77 on (February 12, 2013, 15:35 GMT)

Agree with @shashi00123, how can pune sign Taylor??? Their foreign players quota already full.If they want taylor, they should exchange him with another foreigner.isn't it?

Posted by   on (February 12, 2013, 15:32 GMT)

@KnightTemplar bcoz pathan and yadav are injured and agarkar is of no use.. btw Pune already chad 11 foreigners..

Posted by KnightTemplar on (February 12, 2013, 15:09 GMT)

Nice move by PWI..... G8 middle order batsman..... but why DD swap for nehra when already have Irfan Umesh Morne and Ajit ????
