Angelo Mathews named Pune Warriors' captain

Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka allrounder, will lead Pune Warriors in IPL 2013. Mathews takes over Warriors' captaincy from Sourav Ganguly, who will not play in this year's IPL.

The decision to appoint Mathews would mean Warriors will be without their regular captain when playing their away game against Chennai Super Kings, following the IPL governing council's decision to exclude Sri Lankan players from matches in Chennai.

He wasn't the first choice captain for Warriors. However, once Australia captain Michael Clarke, their preferred choice, was ruled out of this edition of the tournament due to a back injury - one that also forced him to miss the last Test in India - it was clear that Sri Lanka's Test and ODI leader would take over.

Mathews thus becomes the fourth captain to lead Warriors, who open their third IPL campaign with an away game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 5. While Yuvraj Singh led the team in their inaugural season in 2011, Sourav Ganguly and Steven Smith shared the responsibility in Yuvraj's absence last year due to illness. This year, despite Yuvraj having recovered from his rare germ cell cancer, it was known even before the auction on February 3 that the possibility of him leading the team was remote. "Both him and the owners were reluctant to have him as the skipper since Yuvi the allrounder is so much more important to the balance of the team than Yuvi the captain," an insider said.

Mathews, in all likelihood, will be one of three Sri Lankans to captain IPL teams this year, with Mahela Jayawardene leading Delhi Daredevils and Kumar Sangakkara in charge of Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchises have already shown concern over the decision to keep the Sri Lankan players away from the Chennai games due to political tensions, saying that Super Kings may subsequently have an added advantage in their home games.

Former South Africa quick Allan Donald, who was initially appointed Warriors' bowling coach last season, has been named the franchise's head coach. Former India batsman, Pravin Amre, will continue in the role of assistant coach. Trainer Rob Walters, who had previously worked with South Africa and Delhi Daredevils, has been signed as fielding coach and fitness trainer.

I'll start by congratulating Matthews but will say this- 1- he has not enough experience as the leader of the group (especially when so many diffrent players coming from different countires/teams are involved), 2- If they trusted S Smith last yr why not this yr too, 3- If they were looking for a proven leader- Ross taylor is there and finally, 4- R Uthappa should have given a chance (at least to share the captaincy like last yr S Ganguly and S Smith did)...

Yuvraj should be the best choice for captain. No foreigners are expected to play all the games as they are not real winners. They can be shuffled across matches to give opportunity for all of them. So obiviously an Indian should captain the team as he is the one who can use local performer well.

I think yuvraj or samuels probably would be a better captain.Marlon Samuels,Steve Smith,Ross Taylor and Kane Richarson/Ajantha Mendis were their four best overseas players.Playing matthews won't improve their batting and even it will detoriate their bowling. This means smith won't play, who was their best batsman and fielder last year. I think that PWI do not want to lose their position which they got in last seasons.

  • POSTED BY 30-30-150 on | March 29, 2013, 13:40 GMT

Choosing 4 overseas players from the lot becomes tricky if you have an inconsistent overseas player as your captain. Mathews wouldn't even make it to the starting XI if he wasn't the captain. Taylor, Samuels, Smith and Mendis are supposed to be obvious starters among the overseas players. Ross Taylor would have been my choice for the captaincy role. Anyhow, PWI looks strong enough to lift the trophy no matter who is captaining the team.

  • POSTED BY popped on | March 29, 2013, 13:31 GMT

Matthews is still unproven as a captain, he has not had a good start, so I cannot comment, but like someone said Smith/Matthews is fighting for that 4th overseas player place & according to current from methinks Smith should be an automatic choice... and thats taking nothing away from the talent of Matthews, just on form & consistency

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2013, 13:00 GMT

I would say worst decision ever I could imagine thats what pune warriors management did in past...so now one foreign spot filled up no place for Marsh/Wright...coz samules, taylor already their & there should be at least one foreign bowler Richardson/Mendis/Parnell...as far as AM captaincy has concerned who cares about that when you've great combo of local/foreign players..its just performance that matters..so now be ready to drop him if he doesn't perform as expected & there are options to takeover..taylor even if he doesn't perform still pressure of his presence always remains there..But AM no Marsh/Wright far better options to consider in playin 11vn.

A very wise thinking from Pune warriors. They will definitely be successful under Mathews's captaincy.Remeber,Sanga,Mahela and Dilshan play under Mathews. So,there was a point why Srilanka chose Mathews ....All the best,Pune warriors ...

hmm.. Good move considering the Angello's man management skills and communication abilities. He will ramp up his game as he did when he captioned his side to finals on SLPL. I didn't follow the SLPL much but saw the last game and he was Coooooool under pressure in crunch games. Seems he will be the go-to man in a critical stage or IPL for the team Pune. As a neutral observer cant wait for the fun to start..

    Cheers.

  • POSTED BY on | March 29, 2013, 7:02 GMT

Franchises missing a trick here. It would be nice to nominate a young Indian as your captain. It helps him in grooming the players' captain. When you have a foreign captain, your one spot is gone, and you have just 3 foreign spots left. RCB have done good thing by handing over to Virat Kohli and Pune Warriors have players like Robin Uthappa among others who can lead them.

This is not worst decision But I feel Captainship should go for Uthappa. 1. Uthappa 2. Manish Pandey 3. Samuels 4. Yuvraj Singh 5. Steven Smith 6. Angelo Mathwes 7 . Abhisek Nayar 8. Parnell 9. Bhubaneshwar Kumar 10.Rahul Sharma 11 Ashok Dinda

Openers ->Uthappa Manish Pandey Middle order -> Samuels, Yuvraj Singh, Steven Smith, Angelo Mathwes tailenders -> Abhisek Nayar, Parnell, Bhubaneshwar Kumar Wicket Keeper ->Uthappa offbreak - > Samuels , Manish Pandey Legbreak -> Rahul Sharma, Steven Smith Slow left-arm orthodox - Yuvraj Singh Right-arm-Seemers -> Abhisek Nayar, Dinda , Bhubaneshwar Kumar Left-arm Seemers - > Parnell Allrounders -> Samuels, Yuvraj Singh, Steven Smith, Angelo Mathwes, Abhisek Nayar, Parnell

Its a wonderful decision to have such a energetic player who has been playing international cricket right from his age of 16 and under 19 team captain..... definitely pune zz going to rock ahead and be a team to hope for 2013 IPL title under mathews guidance Do well.................

  • POSTED BY satishchandar on | March 29, 2013, 3:08 GMT

Is Mathews a good captain to start with? My reasons why Mathews need not be captain.. 1. Controlling the new Indian players will not be that easy for Mathews.. 2. He is not even with the team till now.. 3. Might break down anytime in between.. 4. He is not a consistent game changer and might not be a sure starter in every game.. Felt Uthappa/Manhas would have given that job instead as they can handle the Indian players better and the overseas guys will not have issues to play under any captain in IPL..

What a shame, Pune can't use Angelo in Chennai! The third Captain to be disarmed by CSK,even before a single ball is bowled. As the old English phrase goes, one doesn't have to guild the lilly! CSK is already strong even with those three captains in the opposing teams.

My PWI 11 :- 1. Uthappa (Capt, WC), 2. Manish Pandey 3. Samuels 4. Yuvraj Singh 5. Taylor 6. Steven Smith 7. Angelo Mathwes.Mithcell Marsh 8. Abhisek Nayar 9. Anustup Majumdar 10. Bhubaneshwar Kumar 11 Ashok Dinda

  • POSTED BY desiboy454 on | March 28, 2013, 22:23 GMT

BAD movie, mathews is fighting for his place in the playing XI in PWI team, and his captiancy is not that great. Personally I would have rather seen alfonso thomas captian. he has great expierence as t20 captian. My playing XI doesnt even feature Mathews. 1. Pandey 2. Luke Wright. 3. Marlon Samuels 4. Taylor 5. Yuvi 6. Utappa 7. A. Nayar 8. Bhuvneswar 9. Alfonso 10. Ishwar pandey 11. Rahul Sharma. This basiclly gives them a good T20 open in like wright , one of the strongest middle order in samuels, taylor, yuvi n uttapa and then their bowl has Bhuvi, alfonso pandey & their best spinner in Sharma. YUVI & Sameuls can add more spin to the team , Luke wright n Nayar add medium pace. Now with Mathews as captian, I see luke wright not playing and uttapa being opener with mathews at 6. they dont need a full out all rounder because sameuls, yuvi and nayar can easly bowl 7-10 overs in a match hands down. Poor choice by PUNE. I expected pune to make final 4, but with MAthews, not possible

  • POSTED BY vroom84 on | March 28, 2013, 21:01 GMT

Best lineup for Pune: Pandey, Nayar, Robin, Yuvi, Taylor, Samuels, Matthews, Bhuvaneshwar, Mendis, Dinda, Rahul Sharma

Strong middle, lower order. Lot of bowling options... 3 different kind of spinners (including yuvi).. 3 medium fast.. 2 fillers(samuels, nayar)

  • POSTED BY Sarobar on | March 28, 2013, 20:27 GMT

According to me the best 3 overseas players in PWI roster are Taylor, Samuels & Wright. That leaves Mathews and Smith fighting for the 4th spot. I would have gone for smith due to his current form as well as past performance for PWI. Very poor decision.

  • POSTED BY StarHawk on | March 28, 2013, 20:26 GMT

Its always a risky move to make a foreign player captain of the team, because that means you have to choose him regardless of his form and you are left with 3 other foreign players in the playing XI. An example was Sangakkara last year, he was in pathetic form and he had to drop himself after failing with the bat. Even last year, Mathews only played 9 matches for Pune. Uthappa is yet to show any sort of leadership skills and Ross Taylor is still trying to find himself..so I guess Mathews was the obvious choice (I'm guessing they never considered Yuvi).

  • POSTED BY InsideHedge on | March 28, 2013, 20:22 GMT

Most of these IPL teams think loading the franchise with foreign coaching staff + designated foreign captain will lead them to victory. Matthews is very green and his own place in the side isn't even guaranteed - well, it is now!

This is what happens when u lack options... Seeing the way he leads, i would say maybe even manish pandey would have been a better choice... And Uthappa would have been the ideal choice unless they are planning to leave him out of the 11... The irony is that of all the players in their team totaling up to 33 i guess, no one can hardly pick a guy who has lead a team well... Every other team, except for maybe KXIP, have got 4-5 proven leaders at their disposal.

I am not sure that this is exactly great news for SL cricket. But it shows how good SL cricketers are in terms of their leadership abilities. It's amazing how there isn't an Indian to captain not just Pune but the other two teams as well. Anyway, Indian players and SL players get along extremely well. I think that must be the reason. To go the full distance, Dilshan should be made Bangalore captain! After all, he is the fourth test captain in the current SL side.

  • POSTED BY Narbavi on | March 28, 2013, 17:19 GMT

Bad selection without a doubt, since yuvi refused captaincy, Uthappa should have been made the captain, he is the team's costliest player, and he is an indian player in the first place, he has been in good form in the domestic circuit and since he was bought for such a huge price, he should have been given the responsibility!!

  • POSTED BY nkoch on | March 28, 2013, 16:47 GMT

Mathews is a great ODI and Test player but 20/20 is no this cup of tea. At the position he bats, he should score at 150 strike rate but he manages barely 100. I agree with Tanmay.. Alfanso Thomas is best 20/20 bowler in the world. He should lead Pune.

  • POSTED BY ARad on | March 28, 2013, 16:46 GMT

I am yet to be impressed by the captaincy of Mathews for the SL team. Ross Taylor may have been a better choice but given Taylor's shaky form, he may not be an automatic selection. Is Mathews a sure selection? Mathews can ball so that will count as a plus when it comes to selection matters but, if Yuvi the ALLROUNDER is so important, doesn't that mean the Pune management is not so convinced of the allround abilities of Mathews?

Good news. Of all the overseas players who could be captain, Angelo was the best choice. He would be great in the lower middle order and he's a very useful bowler in this format of the game, so he would probably be safe from criticism as a player. He's a capable leader as well. Hope the return of Yuvraj and the arrival of Ross Taylor does PWI some good this year.

Wow 3 out of 8, Now Sri Lankan players participation most important in chennai

That's amazing, 3 Lankans captaining IPL teams. Such a small island nation produces gems of cricketers. Good luck to Mathews and all the other players participating in IPL6. Looking forward to a cracking tournament.

After Michael Clarke left the IPL, Angelo Mathews is set to lead the Pune Warriors. Then who will lead them in Chennai? I can't believe they chose him over Ross Taylor and Uthappa. Why do franchises have so much faith in the Lankans when it comes to captaincy?

Why not giving Dilshan the captaincy of Royal Challengers. Then 4 out of 8 half of the league teams captained by Sri Lankans.

Mathews is a great ODI and Test player but 20/20 is no this cup of tea. At the position he bats, he should score at 150 strike rate but he manages barely 100. I agree with Tanmay.. Alfanso Thomas is best 20/20 bowler in the world. He should lead Pune.
