Big Picture

After the top two teams of last year's points table kicked-off the carnival on Wednesday, the bottom two will meet in Hyderabad on Friday. While the host city has a new team - Sunrisers Hyderabad - led by the same captain Kumar Sangakkara, Pune Warriors have a new captain - Angelo Mathews - after Michael Clarke was ruled out of the entire season.

Sunrisers will feel the absence of an in-from Shikhar Dhawan, who was Deccan Chargers' leading run-scorer last season. After retaining 20 players from the Chargers, Sunrisers revamped their leadership, bringing together Tom Moody and Sangakkara, who had worked together as coach and captain for Sri Lanka. They also have overseas pace options in Dale Steyn and Clint McKay, and allrounders Darren Sammy and Thisara Perera, but only Steyn picks himself.

Warriors had an unsettled team last year and the addition Ajantha Mendis, Ross Taylor, Abhishek Nayar, and the return of Yuvraj Singh, will bolster their prospects. Steve Smith is more a batsman than allrounder these days and Warriors will be tempted to include Clarke's replacement, Aaron Finch, who scored two fifties and a hundred against England Lions recently. With Marlon Samuels, Luke Wright, Wayne Parnell also in the squad, a right balance might not be easy to find.

Players to watch

Kumar Sangakkara scored 48, 63, 139, 55, 142, 105 and 58 in the recent ODIs and Tests against Bangladesh. He will now have to score in the shortest format against compatriots Ajantha Mendis and Mathews, among others. His captaincy will also be under the spotlight, because he led Chargers to only four wins last season.

Yuvraj Singh scored consecutive fifties in the Deodhar Trophy and took 3 for 39 and 3 for 19 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, so his recent form has been promising. With captaincy off his shoulders, and having missed all of 2012, he will want to score more than the two fifties he scored in 2011.

Stats and trivia

  • Warriors won only four out of their 16 matches last season
  • Warriors did not have a single bowler in the top-20 wicket-takers last season. Ashish Nehra, now with Delhi Daredevils, took 11 wickets for them and was in 26th place. Their leading run-scorer, Robin Uthappa, was 12th with 405 runs.

"I am not looking far ahead. I am not looking at the semi-finals or anything like that. I just want to concentrate on every game, and on what we do in every game."
Allan Donald, the Warriors coach.

"We have got replacements who are probably good enough to do the job and we are excited to give that opportunity to a younger guy."
Sunrisers captain Kumar Sangakkara believes his team has replacements for injured players, such as Shikhar Dhawan.

It certainly affects if the Team Owner is not from that Region since generally more focus is paid on local talent if he is. Its not necessary but much more likely. My thinking may look outrageous to you, but seriously its no use supporting a team for a particular person from a city just because it has City's name in Team's name. What use it has for local talent hardly any. Thats why I find it tough to generate interest for IPL though i am ardent cricket fan.

As I said before, I just can't understand why this Team's name is Pune Warriors if you dont give any chance to a Maharashtra/Vidarbha Player. It could well have been Lucknow Nawabs and it would have better if it was that since UP doesn't have a team.Mind you, not a single one. As opposed to Sunrisers Hyderabad which has given chances to 4-5 youngsters from Hyderanad and AP, its certainly not true that these 4-5 players are exceptional. Same applies to Mumbai Indians to a lesser degree, except Rohit Sharma no one. S.Tendulkar notwithstanding. It easily visible fact that many IPL teams give chance to local talent but not Pune Warriors/MI/KKR. Its just like a private organization built with a focus to win and make profit, not to nurture local talent. No wonder upcoming talent from Mumbai/MH has dropped significantly in absence of sponsoring

SRH should have Steyn, Sanga, White & Sammy/Thissara as their overseas players as each of them can be match winners on their day. PWI with Saurav out of the picture, should be a better team this year. It's a contest between the underachievers and the underdogs. Hope it doesn't turnout to be a race to the bottom kind of match but instead one of high spirits today.

Posted by Satyendra1 on (April 5, 2013, 12:51 GMT)

There is no better sight than to watch Steyn in steaming hot action..but then that is it as SH do not have support for him...neither does the batting look intimidating (actually far from it). Hence it doesn't look likely they improving big time in this edition too !! By the way PWI look better (at least in batting), would love 2 see Yuvraj clobbering those humungous sixes and if they come against Steyn then WOW !!

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 12:47 GMT)

Would pick D Sammy in place of T Perera. Lets see what the management does!

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 12:42 GMT)

I am looking forward for Chris Lynn and Darren Sammy..Both are match winners and should play each and every match acc. to me..I have seen Lynn and he's as good a talent as Alex Hales or Joe Root..And Darren Sammy can win games in absolute impossible situations..I believe 4 overseas should be Sangakara, Lyn, Sammy and Steyn.. As Sunrisers have a par domestic talent, their team will definitely bank on overseas players to provide the goods... In the end, we all love the underdogs..and hope they do well this season..Best wishes from my side..!

i would like 2 see richarson getting a chance here ...young and exciting talented death bowler

Posted by dsnagre on (April 5, 2013, 12:19 GMT)

Hoping this is a close contest between these two.. Mind says its PWI WIN heart says Sunrisers.. 4overseas pune Mathews,Taylor,Finch/MARSH,Samules sunrisers Sanga ,White,Steyn, perera

Posted by DauIsKing on (April 5, 2013, 11:36 GMT)

The 4 sunrisers overseas player shoud be: Perera, Steyn, Sammy, Sangakara. Mark my words, if Perera is not used properly by the sunrisers then they have no genuine chance of getting through to the play-offs

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 11:17 GMT)

Sunrisers should have no presure on them. Since they are not expected to blow teams away, consistency from each individual is the key.

Posted by Vinayachandra on (April 5, 2013, 10:57 GMT)

My lineup for HYDBAD - K Sangakkara, P Patel, H Vihari, C White, T Perrera/ Sammy, Akshat Reddy/Ravi Teja , Ashish Reddy, A Mishra, D Steyn, I Sharma, S Tyagi

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 5, 2013, 10:22 GMT)

Those who say the Sunrisers have no 'dominant batsmen' should have seen Quinton De Kock hit 127 off 67 balls in South Africa this season. I just hope he gets a run of games to show what he can do, opening the batting and keeping wicket.

Samuels V White . . . could be interesting

Posted by andrew27994 on (April 5, 2013, 8:58 GMT)

I think with Yuvraj back in the side and with the form that he has been in, PWI are definitely one of the teams to watch out for. One of the major reasons for PWI's failure was because of lack of contribution from the Indian players and in the latter half of last season PWI looked like a very desperate side looking for anything that could change their luck and obviously nothing worked out. Also I think the additions of Rasool and Nayar and the exclusion of Ganguly will make a significant change for PWI.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

I would love to see Thisara Perera hitting a big inning. At least 60.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 7:56 GMT)

without tamim pune warriors will keep losing

Posted by Surajrises on (April 5, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Although I would love to see Pune win but Risers might win the 1st match in Hyderabad. Deccan Chargers dint have their luck going on this ground but may b Risers might just have a change in luck. Both teams look weak to be honest so it would be an even match I believe but Risers have a 60-40 chance over Pune bcz its their Home Ground and since first 2 matches have been won by the home teams, the trend might well continue.

Warriors Strong XI (Expected from the Team)

A Finch or M Clarke M Pandey or A Nayar M Samuels Y Singh A Matthews SPD Smith or RS Taylor R Uthappa S Wagh B Kumar R Sharma AB Dinda

Posted by kevepere on (April 5, 2013, 7:16 GMT)

I dont see any impact players in sunrises . Looks quite weak compared to other teams. I mean no quality spinner nor a dominant batsman. Very unfair for sanga to lead a such a team when other teams are filled with t20 talents... Sunrises can be a better Test side than t20 i mean sanga , steyn , ishant and mishra all are more test players . only c.white can be called a t20 kind of player

Posted by Bharatt on (April 5, 2013, 7:14 GMT)

Surely, it's an PWI game, they are surely the most formidable line up and the side to watch out this year ...

Posted by ravi2047 on (April 5, 2013, 7:06 GMT)

Deccan Chargers had the most loyal following in IPL for 5 seasons in spite of they hitting new lows each season. The cricket crazy Hyderabadis I'm sure will be back supporting their new Sunrisers, at least I will.

The revival of the Hyderabad team as Sunrisers Hyderabad with stable owners and good support staff should see some turn around with the team's performance. Good luck team Risers! :)

it would rather be hard for warriors to get a team on field with lot of exciting players in the team.. it would be hard for Hyderabad with Cameron white not playing this time around..

why dont you ever say anything about the wicket?

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 4, 2013, 22:41 GMT)

Its gonna be pretty interesting - Sanga vs Mathews :P

Posted by   on (April 4, 2013, 21:56 GMT)

Its gonna be Pune winning and a team to make it to the top 4. Look at the balance they can provide.

1. Manish Pandey 2. Aaron Finch 3. Sameuls 4. Yuvi 5. Taylor 6. Mathews 7. Uttapa 8. Bhuvneshwar 9. Rahul Sharma 10 & 11: 2 out of Ishwar Pandey, Dinda, Rasool

You will have 2 specialist seamers + mathews at all times along with 2 specialist spinners & 2 part timers yuvi n sameuls. So 4 specialists and 3 very good part timers. I dont know in regards to bowling what more you can ask.

with batting: Pandey has to open, thats where he will be most useful. Finch the aggressive opener. Sameuls, Yuvi, Taylor == POWER middle order, mathews at his typical 6 and Uttapa as the finisher.

I think like CSK this team has balance, but IDK how good of a captian Mathews will be, but he has some smart cricketers to help, yuvi, sameuls, taylor.

My pick for final 4: Pune, CSK, KKR, RCB... MI & DD will fall short as always, Sunriser, KingsXI, RR not good enough.

Final CSK vs KKR. CSK winners
