Sunrisers Hyderabad made a winning debut in the IPL as they defended a low score at their home ground on a slow, difficult pitch. Thisara Perera, Sunrisers' $675,000 acquisition, did not begin too badly for his new franchise, top-scoring with a quick 30, taking the first two Pune Warriors wickets and causing a run-out. Amit Mishra wasn't too far behind, his legbreaks leaving Warriors confounded on a helpful surface. Dale Steyn left the Warriors top order dazed with his outswingers and returned to blow away the lower order with three wickets in four balls.

Not many would have given Sunrisers a chance when they almost sleepwalked their way to 126 after being put in, barring a brief effort to break free from Perera. Deccan Chargers, the franchise Sunrisers replaced, had an atrocious record at this ground, and Sunrisers appeared set to extend that in front of a lukewarm turnout. But they came out a different unit with the ball.

Steyn, charged up as almost always, beat the Warriors openers repeatedly with quick outswingers. Ishant Sharma was accurate and testing, as he can be in helpful conditions. The wickets came Perera's way, though.

After running him fine for a boundary, Robin Uthappa tried repeating the stroke and went caught behind. Marlon Samuels gave the lone slip catching practice in Perera's next over, Kumar Sangakkara deserving credit for sticking with the fielder and the bowler.

Warriors' batting line-up stretched way down to No. 8 Mitchell Marsh, but it was to come unstuck as Mishra brought out his control and variations. Yuvraj Singh, on IPL comeback, walked down, and was easily beaten and stumped. Manish Pandey's struggle to put bat to ball ended with a mishit slog off Mishra, as the asking-rate started mounting.

Almost everything clicked for Sangakkara on the field. He needed young Ashish Reddy to bowl a decent 17th over, and the bowler responded by uprooting Ross Taylor's leg stump with a full, slower delivery.

With 33 needed off three overs, Perera was to make another important contribution. Angelo Mathews, who came in at No. 7, smashed a full toss straight back at Perera, who stuck out his right hand, and the dangerous Marsh was caught short of his crease at the non-striker's end.

Warriors' lower order panicked against Steyn, trying to attack the fast bowler while their captain looked on helplessly from the other end, ruing the fact that his team left as many as seven deliveries unused.

Sunrisers used up their quota when they batted, but weren't able to find any momentum. The top four got only starts, and it was down to Perera to breathe some life into a suffocating innings. He began with consecutive fours off Rahul Sharma and slogged Marlon Samuels' darts for two more boundaries before mishitting an Ashok Dinda full toss in the 18th over. Perera's fall meant Sunrisers weren't able to finish well with the bat, but they were far more determined with the ball.

lol I agree that Perera should have got the Man Of The Match award. But what's wrong with SL fans? why they r moaning? They saying that Mishra got only 1 batsman out but what about Steyn ? Did he get all batsmen out? He got only tail-enders.

Correct list of deserving MoM award - 1) Perera 2) Mishra 3) Steyn

request to SL fans nw don't create an issue out of it. it has happened only once.

It seems PWI is still suffering from the "after -effects" of Ganguly's poor captaincy which largely promoted his own needs.

Remember even KKR did poorly the next season after Dada left, but came back strongly last year.

PWI is choking like last 2 seasons and i am sure they will recover fully by next year.

Sadly, it's one of occasion which clearly shows discrimination against outside payers. Forst choose for Man of the Match is Perera. He has 2+1 wickets plus 30 runs with highest stike rate. He bought the match back with bat & ball by sending Uthappa & dangerous Samuels.

Second choice would be Stayn . Misrah took only Yavi, others were not classy batsman.

Good Captaincy by Sanga . Overrated Samules and Yuvi. Outstanding batting by Thisara. Bad Batting order - should responsible by Matthews and Management. Good balling by Sharma. Waste of three overs for Marsh. BAD DECISION @ AWARD CEREMONY. MOM should be Thisara .Thats All.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 6, 2013, 8:18 GMT)

Yuvraj has proved again, for the umpteenth time, like many other Indian batsman before him, that he scores runs only when the conditions are perfect for batting, ie flat pitches and fast outfields. Cant play spin, and nicks to keeper and slip when ball swings and a sitting duck against short pitched bowling. Atleast they didnt make him captain, so they can consider dropping him.

Posted by amilag on (April 6, 2013, 8:02 GMT)

It was wired batting order from Pune. What the was doing by Mathews with coming to bat 1 or 2 down???? had he come to bad they would have win the match easier. It was low target and had mathew being there, would have easily rotate the srtike and come closer to the target

Posted by PerfectTen on (April 6, 2013, 6:25 GMT) Amit Mishra bowled well alright, but the man who made the maximum impact - with bat, ball and that run out of Marsh - was Thissara and everybody knows that. It's the influence of the same hand that prevents Srilankan players from playing in Chennai that has overruled when it came to MOM award too. Simply DIRTY!. This is what i simply tot when the presentations are over...It is ok Thisara is not playing to become MOM .He plays for SRH to win ...Not hoping any other aspects such as MOM. But really sad it should be given to him..He has taken 2(+1) wickets and 30 runs from 18 balls ...No body came close to that strike rate in the entire match which tells u how hard to bat-on in this pitch...Mitchel marsh run out was not gifted by god .!! It was thisara's quick reflexes had made a hand on to it .He could have left it for fielder at long on coz it was damn fast and may hurt his fingers..If marsh was there with angelo result will nt b d same.

Some really delusional Indian supporters out there! Saying Steyn is overrated & trying to even compare him to Sharma, wot a joke lol

@sandy_bangalore - how many series have Australia & South Africa won in India since Tendulkar has dawned Indian colors....only once...India came close beating Australia twice in 2003-4 & 2007-8 & India almost beat South Africa in 2010-11 series when Dhoni went onto defensive with South Africa at 130 for 6 in 2nd innings of 3rd test leading by 128 runs...when Australia won in India in 2004, Tendulkar was out of first 2 tests...on the other hand its better if in dont say anything about the 2008 series in Australia.

Everybody talking about how the sunrisers survived..but in the end........it was a poor batting performance.....it was hard to believe that pune was playing with 8 batsmen......sunrisers bowled well but some horrible strokes from the pune batsmen should not be forgotten

Posted by   on (April 6, 2013, 7:01 GMT)

We should never under value the useful contributions of the local playes like Akshath and Ashish.... Akshath made a very useful contribution at the top holding the batting at one end and contributed to the score on a very difficult slow pitch. And Ashish got the wicket of of Ross Taylor,at a very key juncture in the innings. The way he duped Taylor with a slow ball is really amazing.

Kudos to Perira , for his his quick 30 and 2(+1) wickets. And amazing performance by Steyn and Amith Misra.Amith Mishra turned the match in favour of Risers by destroying the top order. And an amazing support to steyn was given by Ishanth. I would rather say, this is a whole team effort which is very positive, that got the match in favor of Risers. Keep it up Risers.

well done sunrisers good teamspirit and excellent captaincy... i thought they are going to lose by -5 overs and 7-8 wickets left aftr that 126... but they came back really welll.... welldone sanga and team

@GRVJPR: India yet to win a series in Australia and SA despite playing cricket for 70 odd years..lol. And get whitewashed most of the times when touring abroad. Fit for playing on flat pitches, when a Dale steyn becomes as dangerous as a Rajat bhatia!

Posted by sreehk on (April 6, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

Harsha bhogle said every match SRH have to perform above expectations to stay afloat. Clearly depleted of resources SRH is always going to be on ventilator hoping to survive. This is not the way one would want to see fav team/franchise. Three points here: 1. With an already weak batting line up, why were players like Rohit Sharma, TSuman, and POjha traded off? Forget foreign buys, not even good indian batsmen bought. 2. Why was Sudeep Tyagi not played, by far better bowler than Ashis reddy? Why is Ravi Teja persisted with since many seasons, not a single contribution. 3. Why Cameron white does not bowl? He gave only 2 runs in one over he bowled. As such, hyd does not have good part time bowlers like other teams. Hope next season the franchise wont be miserly and buys a good team. So SRH has survived one match. Lets start praying again!!

Posted by HennopsRiverEnd on (April 6, 2013, 6:26 GMT)

@GRVJPR... Meaning Sachin and Sehwag are overrated and would average 20 if they would have to play day after day in non-Indian conditions?? Just enjoy the cricket

It was nothing but a lucky escape, I would say. One of those days. Although they won the match, there is a lot of room for improvement. They must include Quinton De Cock in next game, opening with Shikhar Dhawan. Cameron White should sit out. Another big problem which Sunrisers face is, they don't have quality middle-order Indian players. When the tournament progresses, that may hit them hard... If the Coach and Manager is wise, they must have learnt their mistakes from last match. The best possible eleven for Sun Risers are; 1. Shikhar Dhawan 2. Quinton De Cock 3. Parthiv Patel 4. Sangakkara 5. Thissara Perera 6. Ravi Theja 7. Biplab Samanthray 8. Padmanabhan Prasanth 9. Amit Mishra 10. Dale Steyn 11. Ishanth Sharma

Posted by   on (April 6, 2013, 6:12 GMT)

Match aside, the Sun risers are the worst attired team . OMG , the person who selected this dress should be sued.

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 6, 2013, 6:04 GMT)

@sandy_bangalore Ishant might average 38 but he belongs to current world champions and No 1 ODI side in world. Dale steyn always get wickets in tailormade conditions. Dale steyn was hammered whensacin got 200 in ODI, he also got hammered when sehwag got 300 plus in a Day against south africa. If dale steyn has to play day after day in Indian condition he will average 50 plus just like murali, warne, shoaib akhtar and other overrated bowlers

Posted by amilag on (April 6, 2013, 5:38 GMT)

surprise..surprise..everyone knows man of the match is perera...

Posted by pethz on (April 6, 2013, 5:35 GMT)

man of the match should have given to THISARA PERERA..scored 30 runs with the bat and got the wickets of UTHAPPA,SAMULS and MARSH in the crucial satge..dats unfair.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 6, 2013, 5:22 GMT)

@GRVJPR: Amit Mishra is a test and ODI reject, with average 40 plus. And ishant sharma averages 38 despite playing 50 tests, and who cant field to save his life. Steyn-all time great. And perera should have been MOM. His 30 runs made the difference in the end

Posted by Surajrises on (April 6, 2013, 5:12 GMT)

So the trend of Home Team winning continues. Both teams were weak in batting but certainly got to say that Risers had a better bowling line up. Steyn & Mishra did most of the damage picking up 6 wickets between them. Of course that's not gonna happen every match but yes certainly the luck seems to have changed for the Risers. At least it looks like they won't be finishing at the bottom of the table this year but certainly I don't see them even making it to the play offs. When it comes to Pune, it really din't matter whether or not Dada was playing! The team lacks that X Factor.

Posted by Crick_Expert on (April 6, 2013, 4:44 GMT)

IPL management should play fair game and add world class PAK players.

Posted by kevepere on (April 6, 2013, 4:32 GMT)

Harsha was telling the truth! All Pune management should learn is to check the players of pune with hyderbad and see how can this pune team could lose to hyderbad. maan hyderbad had the team spirit at their very best . But Pune i mean how many all rounders and big hitters does pune have. mathews number 7 and marsh 8 tells it all. samuels , uthappa , yuvi ! very bad performance by pune

Posted by   on (April 6, 2013, 4:01 GMT)

No one remembers Sanga.he used the bowlers well and always kept the pressure on Pune.Used his bowling options perfectly.... I think Mathews didnt get much support from his team.(senior Guys like yuvraj Taylor...etc)

Posted by LALITHKURUWITA on (April 6, 2013, 4:00 GMT)

I do not understand how Perera did not get MOM. Who selected MOM?

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 6, 2013, 3:50 GMT)

Amit mishra and Ishant were the real heroes for me. Dale steyn got the tailenders out while mishra got top batsmen out. Ishant wasn;t allowed to bowl to tailenders like steyn to pick up wickets.

Posted by ksarma on (April 6, 2013, 3:36 GMT)

disappointing match after MI vs RCB match as it is competition between two teams with less skilled players. I am afraid IPL will have negative impact if there is big gap in teams in terms of quality.

Posted by   on (April 6, 2013, 3:31 GMT)

Hats off to the Sun Rise Hydrabad for the way they fought and won the match but I must say PWI messed it up with their over seas players and batting order..If Mmarsh was playing as a pure batsman he should have definietely batted up in the order and not no 6..if he'e not good enouugh to bat high in the order another player should have been selected to play..a batsman or a bowler..If Luke write was ther why not????? mathw's should definietely batted at least no 5 as he needs time to get settled..We all understand only one team can win a match but try and do the right thing always...All the best PWI for remaining matches..

Posted by Herath-UK on (April 6, 2013, 2:42 GMT)

It is utter shame to give the MOM to a local boy not keeping with the spirit of the game.If not for Thisara's 30 odd runs what total Mishra would have got to defend? The organisers should see the event is not marred by these petty issues. Ranil Herath - Kent

Posted by   on (April 6, 2013, 2:30 GMT)

Yes, surprising decision for MOM. Mishra did well certainly. But I would have thought MOM would go to the player who had the most impact in the match.

Posted by pradave17 on (April 6, 2013, 2:25 GMT)

Good lucks for Sun risers. Great captaincy from Sanga. Bowling change is awesome. Bowlers were extraordinary. Perera, Steyn and Misra done an awesome job. But Sun risers should understand this was just a narrow escape. You have to consider your batting order well. For me, yesterday sun risers are the poorest bat.order in IPL. Sanga had to give away his wicket because of the lag of Reddy and Parthiv. Middle order is also the same. Things will be better when Sammy and Shikar come back. Pune also had the same problem. They put forward the same type High School kids before Marsh, Nayar and Angelo. This is T20. For what you are you saving energy of big hitters by putting them back to the order? Ridiculous.

Posted by dmqi on (April 6, 2013, 2:25 GMT)

How Mishra got MOM? 3 wicket for 19 runs vs steyn 3 for 11 ? IPL style? MOM deservers in order: Perera, Styne, Mishra.

The team combination must be changed and the three players.. Mitchel marsh didn't bowled a single over so we can bring luke wright or finch as opener with uthappa... and steven smith in place of samuals... play parvez rasool for pandey, My team is

Robin Uthappa Luke Wright Ross Taylor Yuvraj Steve Smith Abhishek Nayar Angelo Mathews Parvez Rasool Bhuvneswar kumar Ashok Dinda Rahul sharma

Can't imagine how strong SRH will be once Dhawan returns to the team and Sanga also contributes with the bat. SRH has a very good bowling unit, they just need to up their game in the batting department. Dhawan in and then let's say Sanga and White click with decent contribution from Perera and Abhishek Nayar - it's going to be a run-fest out there. SRH looks really strong this year with different attitude and energy levels. Congrats to SRH. IMO, Perera should have been the MOM. Well played Perera and well played Mishra, Steyn and Ishant (surprise surprise).

Posted by I-Like-Cricket on (April 6, 2013, 1:19 GMT)

I know he only cleaned up the tail but surely Dale Steyn can't get much better. His economy rate was below 3 .... It wasn't a test match, only going for around 12 runs in 4 over can really turn things in the bowling sides favour in T20.

Posted by hayagriva on (April 6, 2013, 1:17 GMT)

It looks like its going to be a bowler's IPL...Most of the matches so far have been low scoring. And barring the dazzling innings from Gayle... no batsmen has shown great intent in the first three matches of the tournament.

Narine shone in the first match. Vinay Kumar did it for RCB. And now bowling performances from Perera and Steyn seals it for SRH.

Posted by Unmesh_cric on (April 6, 2013, 0:49 GMT)

I think PWI made a HUGE blunder by excluding Steven Smith from their playing XI. What were they thinking? He was their best performer in the last edition. His name should be the first one to down when deciding playing XI. What is PWI management trying to prove by excluding their best performer? Are they trying to say performance doesn't count? Unbelievable!

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 23:56 GMT)

Funny how these Indian pitches (in the last 2 games especially!) seem to be helping the quicks! If only the powers that be would allow similar pitches to be developed for use in test cricket. Long term, it would no doubt benefit Indian cricket in general if their young fast bowlers weren't constantly demoralised by slow, low dustbowls! What MSD calls for he gets though it seems, even if it leads to embarrassing defeats like the one to England over the winter (ESPECIALLY the Wankhede game!). I know the format is incomparable in most ways, but a pitch is a pitch; a rare aspect that allows fair comparison between any format. Wouldn't it be nice to see the BCCI encourage pitches like this for test cricket...? Certainly food for thought....With all the money in Indian cricket today, I'm convinced that there is no need for pitches like Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Mumbai etc when England toured....

Posted by GrindAR on (April 5, 2013, 22:37 GMT)

MoM was a tough choice in this match. Mishra took the wickets that effectively dismantled PW out of match. Pererra was close, if his economy would have been better, he was the firm one.

Posted by trav696 on (April 5, 2013, 22:36 GMT)

To be honest, Mathew's could have won the match for Pune with the bat. Mathews ended up 8 NO with 6 balls faced; that was really disappointing considering that he came in with 4.1 overs to go in the match. The lower order should have known that they needed to turn the strike over to Mathews to even have a chance of hitting 33 of the last 3. That is not good enough and he should definitely bat higher up the order to bring some stability to the line up and let loose in the end...

Posted by kandykolla on (April 5, 2013, 22:11 GMT)

Actually it was a mental battle between former Lankan captain Sanga and the present captain Mathews. Sanga used Mathew`s school mate wisely to go against him which was the turning point and defending such a low score was really incredible. Out swingers by Steyn, he`s the best in business.

Posted by Shantaveer on (April 5, 2013, 21:10 GMT)

Best example for all the teams that match can be win by blowers effect only. But should not expect same thing with other teams. Poor by PW

Posted by dayan92 on (April 5, 2013, 20:17 GMT)

Man of the Match should have definitely gone to Thisara Perera for his Allround performance. His quick 30 gt then a marginal score and 2 wickets and a run out.

But all in all great to see the Former Deccan charges start off with a win. And want to see steyn with more fire in the coming matches

Wy stroke players or hitter comes late down the order! Pandey is playin like a boy who is bating first time in his life n more important he is opening the inning! Hv u seen the batting order of banglore royals.. Chris gyle dilshan virat than diviliers than others! Talking to this match samuels whn playin 4 west indies he looks like most dynamite player but here in ipl he plays like more than ordinary! Mathews n michel marsh batting late down the order r u preserving energy for fielding only in next matches! C my batting order 1. Robin 2. Luke rite 3. Yuvraj 4. Samuels 5./6. Yes without a doubt Perera should've been the MOM.His cameo & runout + 2wkts was the biggest impact of the game.Pune's opening pair should be change.Their overseas players should be luke wright, mathews, smith/marsh,mendis.... Samuels only click once in ten matches.

Perera should have been MOM. Best batting performance from both teams at a great strike rate, 2 very crucial wickets and a run out. Add some great fielding to the mix as well. And also Steyn gives new meaning to the phrase 'looks to kill'..he actually does look like he wants to kill the batsman!

Another T20 game, where any calculations are proved to be mumbling numbers in the dark. That's the nature of this game (I won't call it 'form of cricket' because I don't believe it bears any serious relation to cricket, beyond using a bat and a ball and three sticks).

Last tiime I remember a Hyderabad IPL team start the season with a win, it went on to list of the IPL cup. ;) Sun Risers is the real Dark Horse of the tournament. Let Shikhar Dhawan return and the IPL teams will see how strong we are.

Got frustrated after seeing sunrisers score but full credit to their bowlers. Atleast this time steyn got a full support from others. Now he is the man to watch out for andfor god sake remove white n bring sammy who will be a better option. all de best risers continue with the form

Great win by Sun Risers ! Steyn, Mishra & my man of the match Perera were the architectures of this win.Rest of the others including their captain supported them really well in the field.Pune too start smartly.Did really well in the 1st half.captain Mathews used their bowlers smartly. But the batsmen specially openers let him down.I'd like to see luke wright or finch in top of the order inplace of samuels or taylor. Both are out of form.

Excellent Captaincy from sanga. Brilliant Bowling from Master Steyn, Amit, Ishant, parera and Good all round Fielding Performance.Come on Riser Bring it home.I think Saga need to open with Patel n Other line up as White, Reddy, Parera.....

great way to lead a team to victory sanga.... feel sorry for Mathews and his intent of just staying at the non striker's end without putting any reasonable effort to take it on, perera should've been the MOM for his overall performance and gud luk to u mate for the coming matches....

Good bowling unit can defend low scores is once again proved today good to see Ishanth anad Mishra bowl well and a good match.....

Posted by suve on (April 5, 2013, 19:11 GMT)

Thisara Perera clearly deserved the Man of the Match. Without his 30 runs, SRH would've scored less than 100. Thisara's 2 early wickets pegged Pune back and his Fielding, especially the non striker run out was brilliant. Steyn was great but he got the wickets of the tailenders. If Pune needed about 18 off the last over, I think Angelo Mathews would've got them easily vs the part time bowler.

Posted by   on (April 5, 2013, 19:05 GMT)

wow. perera was really good. if he can improve his econ then he's be a great bowler. Stayn was as awesome as ever. hope sun risers won't be like Chargers. let's see :D

How in the god's green earth was Thisara Perera deprived of the MOM title ? 30 runs in 17 balls, 2 wickets of key players (Utappa n Samuels) and the run out of Marsh. He played his heart out in batting, bowling n fielding. but then he was ignored..WOW !!! By the way, A brilliant captaincy from Sanga. He used his bowlers and fielders to the PERFECTION. What a leader !!! feel sorry for Mathews as his top batsmen completely let him down.

Lack of intent in the first six overs when Pune worriers were batting cost them the game. Surely when you have Samuels, Taylor, Marsh , Mathews, Yuvraj to come, you should at least give your openers the liberty of taking the bowlers on and be aggressive in he first 6 overs. Which wasn't the case today.

Almost 35 overs of the match was boring and suddenly turned out to be a low scoring thriller... Nothing more to boast of excpet for the new franchise Sunrisers that they started ipl life with a win. But the way infront is not made of roses for them... May be gets better after Darren Sammy & Shikhar Dhawan making into XIs. But as of now Sunrisers is clearly below bar despite the win. They are clearly short of a good 5th bowler which would change even todays outcome had Steyn not wiped it off in the 19th Over. Pune... Only Sorry for them immense talent and still not able to chase down 127. Steyn, i agree was almost unplayable... And more or less all bowled well... But still 128 was gettable. But Manish Pandey's Over- Counsiousness costed the match.
