Kings XI Punjab's accurate seam bowling was complemented by an all-round fielding display as they raced to an eight-wicket win over Pune Warriors in Pune. It was the first time Punjab had begun an IPL season with a victory and they took just 12.2 overs to chase the target and hand the home side their second successive loss.

Two run-outs and Gurkeerat Singh's spectacular catch were the highlights as Kings XI took control of the game from the first over. The four-man seam attack hardly gave the Warriors batsman a chance on a pitch that perhaps misled them into batting first.

Manish Pandey's hesitant prod started Warriors' slide and they struggled in the Powerplay overs. T Suman, who replaced the injured Yuvraj Singh, added 20 for the second wicket with Robin Uthappa, but both fell trying to push the run-rate. Suman skied Azhar Mahmood while Uthappa's charge to the legspinner Piyush Chawla was poorly judged.

Mandeep Singh then ran out Marlon Samuels with a terrific throw running in from the deep midwicket boundary, and Chawla later ran out Rahul Sharma with a direct hit from long-off, off the last ball of the innings.

Parvinder Awana was a force among the quicks. After a good first over he bowled the best ball of the game, which took Angelo Mathews' outside edge. Warriors were 38 for 5 at the end of the 10th over, and the game had slipped away from them.

Kings XI's accurate bowling made the difference, but the first-match energy from the fielders left Warriors batsman stranded at either end for long patches. The highlight in the field came in the 14th over, via a jaw-dropping catch. Ross Taylor's trademark pull towards long leg was intercepted by Gurkeerat, who dived full length to his right and caught the ball after it had passed him and held on to it after crashing to earth.

Had Mitchell Marsh and Abhishek Nayar not added 25 for the seventh wicket, Warriors would have had to defend fewer than the 99 they got in the end.

Kings XI captain Adam Gilchrist took fourteen runs off the first over of the chase. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was hit for two straight fours and a flicked six, but Gilchrist fell soon after to a catch at deep square-leg.

Then it was the turn of little known Manan Vohra to make a spectacle of his IPL debut. The No. 3 batsman smashed four out of five fours in the fourth over bowled by Ashok Dinda. There were nice shots on the offside before the youngster brought out a swivel-pull to finish the over. He then drilled Mathews to the straight boundary to make it five fours in as many balls.

Warriors were poor in the field too. Dinda dropped Mandeep Singh at mid-on before Taylor dropped Vohra at slip. Mandeep and Vohra added 58 for the second wicket with the debutant making 43 off 28 balls.

I'm a big KXIP fan but I would like to add that Pune's team mgmnt is not managing the team properly. What on earth they were thinking leaving Smith out?? In one of the previous edition RCB had to leave out their skipper, a great NZ spinner to make to team balance right. Like Wright has to open and other foreign players could be Smith,Samuel and Mathews/Finch/Tamim depending upon pitch/other team. Also instead of proven IPL failure Manish Pandey and proven India failure Uthapa they can try younger players like Rassol/Ishwar/Ali Murtza.Look at KXIP to learn about this. Openers should be given free hands and players like Uthapa and Manish should be punished by keeping them to benches for next few games just to make an example.

if pune wants to win..... dont play with manish pandey and uttappa as a opner.

Posted by wizards_chatis on (April 8, 2013, 11:13 GMT)

Why pune warriors neglecting Steve smith becoz previous year IPL he was a leading run scorer for Pune. He's the one who can handle pressure in the middle order and scores frequently in last 4-5 over.

Posted by santhakumar819. on (April 8, 2013, 9:59 GMT)

i think pandey and robin playing with some fear up the order they should drop pandey bring in yuvraj suman and wright will have to open the battng and drop uthappa down at 5 and ross will dropped from the side nayar in his batting ability he coming in too back down the order he must bat at 3 and samuels drop at 4 their bowling seems like strong bowling line-up for me drop out marsh and bring in mendis or parnell they should not put their heads down because last year kkr lost first 2 games but they win that ipl pune win first 2 games and stiil finish last year i thinking that change of fortune i hope pune will come back strong in the next game and winning this ipl

Pune warriors should rely more on Domestic India players rather than overseas players as none of the overseas in this team is consistent and has shown agression. I have been following Ranji, Vijay Hazare, and Mustaq ali trophies, domestic players have lots of talent and can be used, like Ali Murtaza - all rounder, Parvez Rasool, Ishwar try all domestic players who have not got chance to play in India XI, rather than playing those who were earlier with India XI like Manish Pandey, Ashok Dinda, Rahul Sharma, try boss try those are players bcoz they are worth and they are here in your team today use them and kill other teams.

Mathews should be at 5. Can;t blame him. likewise DD lost two games ina row but it's not Mahela's fault. Pune should look beyond Manish pandey. Wright or Finch need to get back into opening slot.

Posted by NagarjunReddy on (April 8, 2013, 7:06 GMT)

This is Completely Wrong with Team ManageMent. They Should give Chance to Play for LukeWroght and Aron Finch. MichelMarsh and Ross Tyalor Not at all requred.( These Two already played for other franchisee and then they came here.) But Lukewright and AronFinch are Both are came to PWI Directly. So They Should Play in Xi. OtherWise PWI will Lose All Matches . already this is the 11th consicutive Loss for PWI from Lost season 9 and this season 2 mathces. and also they should give chance to rasool jammu kasmir all rounder. suman, utappa, manesh pandey, ross taylor, Abhishek nayar, etc.. players all are not played well for other franchisee, so they sold them. how they will play here . team management should think least. PWI Have Excellent Batsmen but they are sitting on bench. this is not at all good signs for Team. Please Play Xi: same order. 1. Luke Wright 2. Finch 3. Yuvraj 4. Stev Smith 5. Mathews 6. utappa 7.Anustup Majumdar 8. parwez Rasool 9.bhuvi 10. R.sharma 11. iswar pandey

I can't believe how eager these people are to point the finger at Mathews. I accept he is neither Mahela nor Sanga, NOT YET. But he did what he could do on the field as a skipper. Why don't talk about whole top order ?? and those dropped catches ?? Its not Mathews fault they consistently fail with the bat n drop dollies. He can be blamed for failing with the bat but not for his captaincy.

Will Yuvi be available for upcoming games. If not pune has lost the league here only.As both the experienced players will be out of league.First Michael Clarke and now Yuvraj SINGH.For pune team, without YUVI,its like Sachin without cricket. Get recover YUVI ang get the Championship Trophy to PUNE,which you had done in WORLD CUP 2011. ALL THE BEST YUVI AND GET WELL SOON.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 6:21 GMT)

Now,PUNE needs to wake up from their mistakes in past games. They have losses against the teams who have not so good players.Wonder what will they do against RCB's and other strong teams in League.PUNE had beaten in all three formats.Fielding was too poor, same in batting and bowling. The team must contain hard hitting opner so that opening can be good.Robin and Manish play very test format T20.If Tamim is available,he should be given games and Luke Wright/Aaron Finch should also be given chances,so that Powerplay score increses for Pune, which has been big problem since past edition as well. Bowling department is good, but Parvez Rasool is positive.he is good in batting also, know for hard hitting finisher,he should be given chances to show his class. Many changes can't be done but surely, this change should be done.We have Mystery Spiner as well.If both of them included it will benefit team. Fielding should also be improved, fumbles in last game. They don't have to worry in Allrounder dept.

@jimbond I think Manan played quite sensibly. He hit 5 consecutive boundaries and didn't get carried away. He stayed at the crease and started taking single. He showed good temperament. As for the flighted hits, I believe he only hit two such shots and they were completely risk free as they were well placed between fielders.Overall, he played fluently and safely. He just had a minor hiccup when he was dropped, but he had already done his job by then.

and where is mendis?PWI should make pitches spinner freindly.bcoz they have mendis, rahul, yuvraj.just like KKR.make slow low pitch and bring mendis.myXI[1]luke[2]uthappa[3]yuvi[4]steve[5]mathews[6]nayar[7]suman[8]b kumar[9]dinda[10]mendis[11]rahul

Posted by Otuwa on (April 8, 2013, 4:38 GMT)

it is not mathew"s fault...PWI batsmens not perform well all these two matches.so dont critisic mathews captaincy.there are too many ancor rols in PWI.like ross, uthappa, pandey, samuel.so bring luke and smith for ross and samuel.

Posted by Sundara-Chandare on (April 8, 2013, 4:26 GMT)

where is ajantha mendis??

Posted by jimbond on (April 8, 2013, 4:20 GMT)

I thought young Manan plays too much in the air. Against a slightly better fielding side, or on the day he is slightly less lucky, he would lose his wicket. I hope he is able to change his game when he plays the longer version of the game.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 4:07 GMT)

mathews problem in the team is that neither he is able to anchor or play a 60-70 run innings nor he plays at a good rate. He will score like 25 off 25 and then in pursuit of a biggie, he will fall and put pressure on the batsman after him.

Posted by indiasucksgobd on (April 8, 2013, 3:40 GMT)

Tamim Iqbal should get a chance after his return from the zimbabwe tour

Posted by Htc-Android on (April 8, 2013, 3:37 GMT)

I cant believe people are blaming mathews here. As a captain, mathews would be expected to lead the team on the field( Which he did Against Sun risers by restricting them for 126). But what Mathews can do if the other batsmen dont support him. In both matches pune hasnt crossed 110 runs. Obviously mathews cant bat for others. They have to do their part. mathews hasnt done bad on the field at all. Even on today too he picked up a wicket. But, his batting is a worry for me.

Posted by TUPZ on (April 8, 2013, 3:15 GMT)

it seems that PWI will surely achieve that WOODEN SPOON trophy for the third time in row. This team should be regulated for achieving this rare feat that they would be achieving at the end of this season.

Posted by Lovetesh on (April 8, 2013, 3:09 GMT)

PWI is just a bunch of good players. There is no inspirational leader or player to rally them as a team. Too bad they missed out on both Clarke and Greame Smith. Samuels should be dropped and Luke Wright should be given chances now. If Matthews fails again, then drop him as well and bring in Steve Smith. This team cannot play worse even without a captain.

Posted by Ramansilva on (April 8, 2013, 2:43 GMT)

Mathews performance will be interesting to watch from now on. He will fail miserably I guess as a captain and an "all rounder" in this IPL and prove that he is not even worthy of being in the playing 11. That will bring his downfall not only from IPL but also from SL cricket.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 8, 2013, 2:30 GMT)

It is a skipper who is letting us down! U say, Is Mathew a better player than Samuel/Luke Rite/ Tailor/M Marsh/ Smith than how u make him captain! He is worst captain!

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 8, 2013, 2:22 GMT)

C Pune Warrior score 30/3 in(8 ovrs) now what will do big gun in remaining 12 ovrs! The match is already lost in just 8 ovrs !! Its shame Pandey Uthapa Samuels/Suman playin for himself not able to score boundaries! One batsman thinking im playing sheat anchor role u hit and other think no i am playing sheat anchor role u hit eventually lots of dot balls n get out in very stupid manner! There is game no game planing! What is the role of mathews in a team! M Marsh is batting on 8 position does not make any sense either! Luke rite is a explosive batsman n bowl far better than mathews! Oh come on pune take it seriously .

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 8, 2013, 2:20 GMT)

Obsession with overrated foreign players costing Indian teams. Indian is ranked number 1 in ODI in world and number 2 in test matches, their players must be given more chances.

Posted by CricketpunditUSA on (April 8, 2013, 1:50 GMT)

For crying out loud, Matthews is not a captaincy material by any stretch of imagination. He should compete with Samuels for playing 11. Obsession with Foreign players as captains has cost this situation. Don't know why Yuvi got stipped of the captaincy. Matthews will never be able to achieve what Yuvi has done for india. And this is Indian Premier Leaguy. Steven Smith was very impressive in his stint in the recent Ind-Aus series. You have only 4 players allowed and making a foreign player a captain restricts your choices down to 3. Mumbai Indians are suffering through this and Matthews is not R Ponting. He is not even a Sanga or Mahela for that matter let alone a Ponting.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 7, 2013, 20:39 GMT)

@Sanjay P Nambiar ; Why are you blaming Mathews ? Its not the Skipper who is letting his team down but the team is letting the Skipper down. Big names in the top order(Samuels, Taylor, UV) failed to deliver on both occasions. So you can't hold him accountable for the team's mediocre performances.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 7, 2013, 20:19 GMT)

Plz plz listen my comment carefully.. Y y y pune warriors coach staff is not learing..! Pandey is not fit so as Uthapa 4 opening slot! Their best batsman must face as many ovrs but Uthapa Pandey n samuels almost play 7-8 ovrs 4 nothing n got out! Mathew is wrost captain he shld not deserve in playing IX. Where is Luke Rite where is Smith! Tailor is not a gr8 t20 player either! I can think better than pune coach staff who is workin blindly! Plz plz change batting order! It shld be 1. luke rite 2. Samuel 3. Yuraj 5. Smith/Tailor/ Mathews 6. MMarsh 7. Uthapa than rest! Ur best batsman shld play max. Ovrs. And there shld be given clear instruction to all batsman that we want 8 runs per ovr minimum frm starting! There is no point of playin too many dot balls either hit out or get out! Plz plz plz take my advise..

Posted by A__J on (April 7, 2013, 20:03 GMT)

Samuels needs to be dropped for Smith- smith is great. And pandey needs to make way for yuvraj. id suggest giving suman another try. opening with taylor and someone else like nayar or utthapa seems wise. the bowling is good at times but fielding can be lacking. PUNE really need to pcik up their batting. didnt they buy kane richardson??

Posted by   on (April 7, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

Where's Valthaty and Marsh? Although I was a very nice win, I think they are starters no matter what. With Vohra and Gil, things will get sweet easily.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 7, 2013, 15:24 GMT)

Manish Pandey is good only for grade cricket in Bangalore. Not at IPL or any other league where he is completely out of his depth!

Posted by nathcricexpert on (April 7, 2013, 14:59 GMT)

Can not understand why Manish pandye is there in lineup, does not deesrve to play in XI . Uttappa should not open, he is not playing for team, always take lot off time to settle. Playing like test match in first four overs. I always belive Ashok dinda is also over rated guy. Taylor shouldl open with A finch if want to take benifit of pawer play.

Posted by Unmesh_cric on (April 7, 2013, 14:36 GMT)

@Sanjay P Nambiar, I agree with you about Steve Smith. He was the only bright spot for PWI in their disastrous campaign last year. Why he is not included in the playing XI is beyond me. There was another guy who looked pretty good in the only one game he played last year: Anusthup Mujumdar. I don't know where he is.

Posted by   on (April 7, 2013, 13:57 GMT)

to be honest, mathews is the worst captain >:( Steve smith ws the only performer last year and he was dropped...wth :/ Marlon doesnt suit IPL too :(

Posted by Winsome on (April 7, 2013, 13:50 GMT)

TNAMark, Kings XI and Sunrisers have excellent attacks. Pune probably won't have to face that quality twice in a row for a while.

Posted by Prathap34 on (April 7, 2013, 13:30 GMT)

Marsh has to open the innings with Finch or L.Wright , pandey n dinda has to be dropped , bring in rasool or I.pandey , next match yuvraj has to cum bck, replace taylor with S.Smith .... ths strategy will be bst for pune if this happens , pune will have a commanding team...

Posted by Ross_the_Boss on (April 7, 2013, 13:05 GMT)

it has to be Uthappa with Samuels (he will do well i am sure). Pandey has to dropped since he has done precious little other than his century for RCB. and Yuvraj if fit has to come at 3 with Taylor to follow.

Posted by kamriyas on (April 7, 2013, 12:56 GMT)

Pune should get rid off Manish Pandey.. only then they can score atleast 120+ Manish Pandey is the main culprit creating more pressure on top

Posted by Winsome on (April 7, 2013, 12:16 GMT)

Pune look absolutely awful so far. The only one with any intent is Marsh, however they should either send him up the order or drop him. No point in playing him at 8 if they are not going to bowl him. Great bowling from Kings XI supported by aggressive field settings and outstanding fielding.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 7, 2013, 11:32 GMT)

@Abhishek I don't remember Yuvraj ever winning a game on his own in the IPl the same way Gayle MSD Pollard and co have done ? he never really seems to have found his feet in the comp from what I've seen, hopefully he can change that this yr tho as Pune are going to need it. Do agree about Wright over Marsh and opening with Uthappa for sure.

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (April 7, 2013, 11:30 GMT)

Oh dear, Anjelo is gone. Is it the pitch? Hope to see Taylor does his magic and put up some competitive total.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 7, 2013, 11:27 GMT)

One thing I notice about Pune is the dead track, Uthappa and Taylor look like completely different players on here compared to when they played half there games at RCB, same can be said about Samuels all these top3 batsman love the ball coming onto the bat fast and this is one of the slowest deadest tracks it's the opposite to home advantage playing on here for them haha.

Posted by   on (April 7, 2013, 11:09 GMT)

This is terrible news for PWI, Yuvi is the only player in the PWI who can win any match by his own. I am still surprised that on what planet Earth Mitchell Marsh over Luke Wright and Aaron Finch? PWI desperately need an good opener to open with Uthappa. Seriously Matthews, what are thinking?
