Run-machines in tandem: Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar walk in, Royal Challengers Bangalore v Mumbai Indians, IPL, Bangalore, April 4, 2013
Not a familiar sight for Mumbai fans © BCCI

Big Picture

The last time Ricky Ponting played at Wankhede Stadium, he was leading Australia in a one-dayer against India. There was no IPL yet. Ponting made a half-century, and one can imagine the kind of reception he must have got from the Mumbai crowd, which has a ready ability to heckle visiting teams and captains. More than five years later, when Ponting walks out to the toss on Tuesday night, you can be sure there'll be nothing hostile about the crowd's behaviour towards the Mumbai Indians captain. It'll be the franchise's first home game of the season, and Wankhede will know, and respect, what it is witnessing when Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar walk out together.

Not only will Mumbai be backed by the screaming hordes, they will also be lifted by the presence of their key bowler, Lasith Malinga, who is likely to be fit for his first match this season. Malinga should come in for one of Mitchell Johnson or Dwayne Smith.

Mumbai had a batting failure against Chennai Super Kings, and were hauled back from the edge of defeat by an acrobatic catch from Kieron Pollard, who had bailed them out with an unbeaten fifty earlier in the game.

Till the penultimate over against Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils were winning the game easily, David Warner having guided the chase sensibly. Then Warner was run out, and the rest choked. Daredevils have lost both matches so far, and will be hoping Virender Sehwag has recovered enough from his back troubles to play. Daredevils will also welcome back last season's highest wicket-taker, Morne Morkel, and the feisty Roelof van der Merwe, who will join the squad after playing in South Africa's domestic T20 final.

Players to watch

Sachin Tendulkar has received many shocking lbw decisions over his career. The one he got against Chennai Super Kings wasn't one of them, still, his reaction was about as livid as you'll ever see Tendulkar on the field. It is surprising the match referee did not have anything to say. That is a different matter, but Tendulkar's disgust showed his desperation to make runs. Has the presence of another legend at the other end made him even more determined?

Morne Morkel had 25 wickets last IPL season at just over seven runs an over. Indications are he will play, and if he does, the tall fast bowler should enjoy the bounce the Wankhede generally offers. Mumbai have had batting stutters in both matches so far, and facing Morkel will be a testing prospect.

Stats and trivia

  • Last year at Wankhede, Mumbai Indians were shot out for 92, with the Daredevils quick bowlers picking up seven wickets.
  • Kieron Pollard is eight short of 3500 T20 runs

"T20 is a game of improvisation but you have to strike a balance between improvising and sticking to your own style. I want to balance it out even more so that it does not get too much one-sided."
Daredevils batsman Unmukt Chand

@Jimbond: exactly mate...thats what i also believe...look at the MI team composition...they hardly play any newcomer...they keep on playing Rohit Sharma even after repeated failures...look at players like Dhawal Kulkarni and Abu Nechim Ahmed...they deserve chances..but no MI will not let that happen.....during last IPL Dhawal Kulkarni showed some promise in the little opportunity he IPL in Abu Nechim too bowled really well...but did not get the opportunity to play last year......if u remember the CLT20 in 2011 which was won by MI...Abu was the highest wicket taker in that series as far as I remember..but sad part is that these players are simply being wasted now :( also look at Rahul Sharma...last year he got to play only 1 match for MI..but see how things are going after changing the franchise...when will these teams understand that the sole objective of IPL is to give youngsters a platform to perform...all about giving them confidence....hope they realise this soo

I desperately want to see sachin score today. He is one of the greatest ever players and I feel bad when he doesnt score

Posted by Shaurya_123 on (April 9, 2013, 14:01 GMT)

People doesn't seem to remember Sehwag But I Can tell them to just wait for a few matches and the orange cap will be his so that he may answer the selectors and his critics for how they rate him now

My Playing XI- GOD, Rohit, DK, Pollard/Ponting/Rayadu (depending on Situation), Bhajji, Mitchell,Malinga, Oza, Munaf/Bumrah

Posted by EverybodylovesSachin on (April 9, 2013, 12:33 GMT)

Sachin is a stroke player and when there is chance to hit the ball for runs he would still do it and that is how he got out in Chennai on first ball try to flick away on leg side and ball swung a bit and got LBW. Might have thin inside edge becasue of his rection to the decision but it was close. Hope to see to score some good runs today. Both the legends are under pressure to perform..

Posted by krishindian on (April 9, 2013, 12:08 GMT)

well there should be 4 changes for mi one karthik opener no rohit and rayudu get young and hard hitters malinga in for smith and last get a good score if bat 1st

Posted by   on (April 9, 2013, 12:01 GMT)

my 11 will be blizzard, sachin, ponting, karthick, rsharma, pollard, raydu, h singh, ojha, malinga, kulkarni,

Has the presence of another legend at the other end made him even more determined? It definitely is. Sachin takes a lot of pride in performance and it was obvious on that day. Batting along side Ponting, will only increase his motivation and hunger and it is same for Ponting. Hoping to see these two strike some form and would be a visual treat for the fans.

is malinga playing today ?

Posted by jimbond on (April 9, 2013, 9:42 GMT)

The sad part about teams like Mumbai, Pune, KKR is that they have several players whom they would never give a chance, but merely retain to prevent them from being taken by others. I hope that Jalaj Saxena also moves to some other franchisee at the end of this year(like Rahane did). Else, talented players like Jalaj Saxena and Surajkumar Yadav will not be able to display their games in front of the audience.

my playing 11 for mumbai indians-sachin,maxwell,ponting,sharma,kartik,pollard,raidu,harbhajan,ojha,munaf,malinga..!!

please get the combinationa right , russel in 6 and botha at 7 is not the way to go.As a sri lankan i would love to see mendis in the playing 11. Anyhow play a proper batsman at 7 be it van deror or mendis

Posted by   on (April 9, 2013, 9:12 GMT)

If Sachin & Ponting can stay till 5-6 ovrs, without losing any wkt.. And then atleast one of them staying till 12-15 ovrs with Karthik/ Rohit/ Rayudu.. Then surely the big hitters (Pollard, Johnson) can come to party & score big..

Posted by Rohit_06 on (April 9, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

The arguement whether sachin is good or bad does not even exist..... Sachin symbolises everything that is positive about india...

Posted by draviid92 on (April 9, 2013, 7:45 GMT)

@dravid_gravitas if sachin plays atleast 35 balls than it will very difficult for DD to win this match.......

Posted by deeprakesh on (April 9, 2013, 7:30 GMT)

I think delhi will come hard today on MI as they have lost two games in row. Mumbai will be tested by DD on Wankhede. It will be a close match DD having the 55 % chances to 45 % MI

Ponting and Sachin opened only twice in this IPL. 1st against RCB and next against CSK. They got off to 52 in 7 overs in the 1st game. While in the second game Sachine was out 1st ball. Hence they had 1 partmership of 52 runs in 7 overs which is above 7 runs per over. I am not sure why are people calling for a change so early and have already decided that they are worst or slowest opening pair. Remember Sachin saying once that if he can get runs scoring boundaries all along the ground what should one risk going arial. The problem is he doesnt hit big shots like Pollard or Gayle. But remember providing solidity is also part of the game. That is the reason Mumbai have managed to Win so many games.

Mi 11- Sachin Dinesh Karthik(he is in good form let him open) Ponting ( this is his suitable position) Rohith Pollard Raydu Rishi Dhawan( he is a good all rounder),Harbhajan,Malinga,Johnson,Jasprith Bumrah/Munaf Patel/Akshar Patel (he is also a promising all rounder-left arm orthodox spinner only 19 year age he was good in SMA T20 for Gujrath) I Think This is a balance team with good batsmen and all bowling options

Posted by romySharma on (April 9, 2013, 6:08 GMT)

Please change the captain to win the IPL title.

Sachin and ponting in one team is a disaster they both are playing with same pace at least some one shift the gear and play fast otherwise sachin should be open with some hitter like smith or maxwell if sachin and pointing will start the inning then they play slowly and create lot of pressure on other batsman.

Posted by   on (April 9, 2013, 5:43 GMT)

Envious. This would be a sight to see! Tendulkar and Ponting together, in 1 team and batting together.Wow!

Posted by   on (April 9, 2013, 5:38 GMT)

Wowo Malinga is back. Johnson with malinga, it is a deadly combination. Pollard should open with sachin. I saw some people pointing to sachin, Ponting etc it is not indivdual game. @Cpt.Meanster, Sachin dpes not care that you respect him or not. He did not say that you tell him GOD. It is his Dedication and passion which make him respcted. Why onle Sachin, Imran khan played till 42 in international cricket. Jaysuriya, miadad even so many player retired from international cricket after 40. Kapil Dev always point on Sachin hould retire, becuase he did not play with sachin. Go and ask to Dravid, Zaheer, Gangully, they will tell about sachin. Kapil should also see his stats of his last 60 matches. You guys are only make a noise.

Posted by Vind27 on (April 9, 2013, 4:57 GMT)

I hope the Mumbai Indian get the right team combination today. John/Anil please get it right I will suggest

Sachin, Pointing, Tare or Marathe, Dinesh, Rohit, Rayadu, Pollard, Johnson, Harbhajan, Ojha, Malinga.

Send one of the two Tare or marathe in opening which release the pressure on pointing. Let them attack the opponents. The recent records of both batsmen are good.

The last of the golden generation clashes today..........i wish the old guns fire for some vintage action........

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on (April 9, 2013, 3:09 GMT)

I hope Statchin plays at least 35 balls. We can then be sure of DD win.

Posted by leadshafi on (April 8, 2013, 23:10 GMT)

sachin is a true legend and we can see it today.go boss

Posted by AvidCricFan on (April 8, 2013, 22:38 GMT)

This is in a way a match up of fading or faded past greats. Ponting was sidelined by ABC, however, BCCI is persisting with Tendulkar and giving him a blank check. The only format that Tendulkar should play is IPL. He should retire from all other forms International cricket. He is just ruining his good statistics at this point.

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (April 8, 2013, 20:47 GMT)

I feel Tendulkar is riding heavily on luck nowadays. Had he not been an Indian, he would have been sacked a long time back for poor and inconsistent performances. With India filled to the brim with sentimental people and demi-god worshippers, Tendulkar gets to stick around till 40. What a joke ?! I wish to see him retire soon and make way for deserving youngsters. Enough is enough. Whatever respect he has until now is diminishing every day. It's time he hangs up his boots and moves on being an elected politician or air force commander or whatever he could do in his spare time.

If Ponting continues to play Pollard @#6 in batting, they will not get the full production from him. It does not make any sense in putting Rayudu ahead of Pollard. Pollard should bat @ #'s 4 or 5. Rohit Sharma is forced to play aggressive Cricket (mostly irresponsible) because he knows that there are guys like Rayudu & Pollard below him. Let Pollard go ahead of Rohit & Rayudu. Then expect full production from all 3. This looks like it is going to be a great match if both Sehwag & Morkel play for DD. Sehwag can open with Chand or Mahela. This will reinforce the DD batting. DD got Yadev, Morkel & Irfan + Negi & Nadeem in spin. I expect a great match if every one is fit. DD at full strength is one of the top teams & can beat the best if they all apply themselves to the task ahead. Good Luck to both.

Posted by   on (April 8, 2013, 19:11 GMT)

dd should try mendis in place of botha and gautam in place of oja and agarkar should try in place of nehra because he too expensive also agarkar know well how bowl to his ranji teammate my team for mi is viru, warner, chand, jayawardhane, mendis, gautam, pathan, morkel, agarkar, yadev, nadeem.

Posted by phunny_game on (April 8, 2013, 15:28 GMT)

I agree with unmukt that T20 is a game of improvisation but you have to strike a balance between improvising and sticking to your own style... well, right now he is doing none :D

Posted by 11_Warrior on (April 8, 2013, 13:53 GMT)

MI should must give chance to Jalaj Saxesena or Suryakumar Yadav ahead of Ambati Raidu
