Yuvraj return lifts Pune Warriors

Match facts

Thursday, April 11, 2013
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Pune Warriors' middle-order should be the envy of any Twenty20 team. Marlon Samuels, Yuvraj Singh, Ross Taylor and Angelo Mathews form the nucleus of what could be one of the most dangerous batting line-ups around but so far, Warriors have put up the two lowest totals of the season.

When Yuvraj missed out on the game against Kings XI Punjab, they couldn't even manage to reach triple-figures, managing only 99. The good news ahead of the match against Rajasthan Royals is that Yuvraj, who was recovering from a back problem, has been confirmed fit. They still won't be able to field their first-choice middle-order, though, as Samuels has picked up a groin injury. Samuels' absence opens up an overseas player's spot and Warriors have Australia batsman Steven Smith, who was an influential performer for them last season, and England's Luke Wright in their ranks. However, coach Allan Donald said on the eve of the match that big-hitting Australian opener Aaron Finch would come in.*

In contrast, their opponents have got off to a flying start. Royals, as in every season, were written off before the tournament began, but have won two in two, with victories over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and another highly rated team, Delhi Daredevils. As usual, low-profile players have played crucial roles, including Trinidad & Tobago allrounder Kevon Cooper and Jharkhand fast bowler Rahul Shukla.

Players to watch

Sreesanth was out of action for more than a year after surgery on his toes and only returned to action in December, having watched a host of young fast bowlers leapfrog him in the queue to the Indian team. The IPL provides him a high-profile platform to remind everyone he's still good enough to turn out for the national side. He's begun well enough, bowling tight spells in the opening matches, and even showed off one of his typically exuberant celebrations.

Robin Uthappa is one of Sreesanth's best friends in cricket, with the pair even launching a cricket homestay together. Like Sreesanth, Uthappa too has fallen out of the national reckoning, and his failings in the IPL have not helped his cause. Two years ago, Warriors splashed out serious money to build the franchise around Uthappa and Yuvraj but Uthappa hasn't been the match-winner the franchise expected him to be, yet.

Stats and trivia

  • Warriors' Manish Pandey has the most number of ducks in the IPL - eight, an wanted record he shares with Amit Mishra
  • Royals' Samuel Badree has the best economy-rate among all bowlers in Twenty20s, having conceded only 4.90 runs an over in his career

Quotes

"Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa are attacking batsmen, but they seem to have gone into a shell during the Powerplay overs."
Warriors coach Allan Donald knows the side needs to get better starts

I would feel a bit aggrieved if I was Luke Wright. I'm totally biased being English, but his T20 form has been brilliant for the past year. I would love to support a team that included someone English!

He was in poor form only in tests, not in t20's!!

@Narbavi: Kusal played his 1st ever Ipl game and scored 15off 11 balls not 14 off 12. Watson scored 10 off 5 in his match. so in that case he should be dropped after that game. Kusal looked promising and is in brilliant form, shame he's dropped after just one game. And that too for a player who has been in abysmal form lately but being played just for namesake

@Tal_Botvinnik: Don't you even know that this is an indian premier league, you can't call for the heads of indian players here, What if Dravid has 117 and Rahane 118? You want them to be dropped from the RR team and be replaced with whom? Personally this strike rate is really a good one if other batsmen can strike at 130, you need these type of batsmen too at t20

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 10:48 GMT

@Baseball-Sucks: There you go again, calling for Kusal's spot, by the way after so many comments in the preview sections where were you after kusal made just 14 off 12 in the first game despite being dropped once? I like Kusal to be honest, but let me remind you again, he won't get a game at the expense of watson

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 10:46 GMT

@Tal_Botvinnik: So 118 is a poor strike rate for an opener? Dilshan has a strike rate of 119 in t20's , how about that then?

@ Arjun_M on (April 11, 2013, 9:23 GMT) agreed with you big time mate... Matthews is a joke with his form... only reason he is playing is that he is the so called "CAPTAIN"... nothing else.. No player should get a free ticket to be in the team if he is out of form just because he is the captain... and he is an overseas player too....

@Narbavi ; Strike rate of 118 is terrible for a T20 opener. Kusal's SR is 138+ . LOL . Even a test batsman like Sanga is keeping SR of 120+ in T20. lol

Please break the Manish Pandey Uthappa stand. Please get Luke Wright to come in. Let let Uthappa bat at 7. Pandey Luke Taylor Yuvraj Anustup Mathews Uthappa Bhuvi Parnell Rahul Sharma Dinda

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 11, 2013, 9:35 GMT

    @Narbavi

Read my comment carefully, the fact that he plays so many circumspect innings along with few dynamite innings. He will do nothing but put the pressure on the rajastan middle order.

Anyway think rajastan would lose all its momentum when it plays with top teams like RCB,MI,CSK...and SRH the dark horses.

  • Arjun_M on April 11, 2013, 9:23 GMT

Manish Pandey, Angelo Matthews and Mitchell Marsh are T20 misfits, and they shouldn't be playing at all if Pune have to win enough to make the knockouts. That one of them is appointed as captain means they will struggle again. They can, instead, give chances to Ishwar Pandey, who set the Ranji charts on fire. A top six of Uthappa, Wright, Finch, Yuvraj, Taylor and Nayar is good enough.

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 9:17 GMT

@Tal_Botvinnik: Strike rate of 118 overall in t20's is unacceptable for you? lol alright!!

  • on April 11, 2013, 9:13 GMT

I don't understand the tactic of leaving Steve Smith on the bench. He played well last season and even in recent test series in India. With the team having batting issues he could be a good option.

  • Baseball-Sucks on April 11, 2013, 9:11 GMT

@Narbavi ; Rahane isn't a good T20 opener. He is scoring too slow. It was clearly shown during last few matches. He wasted so many power play deliveries. He isn't good for opening. He should be play no.3. Kusal Perera is the best opener RR've got.

  • sparth on April 11, 2013, 9:04 GMT

Manish Pandey really needs to change he mind set. The fact that he wants to have the record for the most number of ducks in the IPL is just bad for the team. Either that or the article made a mistake

  • on April 11, 2013, 8:35 GMT

According to me the main problem with Pune Warriors is their batting line up and not getting any good opening. Though they have a envious reserve bench, but they are unable to choose correct line up. My line up for Pune would be- Utthapa ,Tamim Iqbal, Luke wright, Yuvaraj,Steven Smith, Anusthup Majumder, Angelo Mathews,A Nayar, Rahul Sharma, B. Kumar, A Dinda. Best Wishes for Pune..dont make us upset this time. Again saying....Pune Roczzzzzzz!!!!!!

  • on April 11, 2013, 8:11 GMT

i think the problem pune having is they are badly missing a good solid opening patnership who can get 45-60 runs during the power play overs...the best option is bring luke wright to the team....during the BBl and t20 worldcup he showed us how he can be dangerous during the power plays....at the same time yuvi .mathwes and taylor must get most of the overs to bat......i think todays pitch will suit for spiners...therefore bring mendis as welll...his bounce and wrongs ones will definetly trouble the batsman....my 11 for todays game....1.uththtappa2.wright3.yuvi4.mathews5.taylor.6.panday.7.nayar.8.kumar.9dinda.10.rahul.11.mendis combination of yuvi, mathes and wright can esily bowl 6-8 overs........so best od luck pune.......today is going to be your day......

  • on April 11, 2013, 7:34 GMT

i thing selecting mathews as captain is a good decision....bcz he is young and talanted player....and i dont think that pune worries has a better captian than mathews...bt the problem with their teams is they dont have proper openers who can score 45-60 runs during the power plays.....best option is bring luke wright to the team and ask him to oppen with uththappa....and the same times mathews, yuvraj and taylor must come up in the batting order and must bat more overs.......my 11 for todays match 1.uththappa2.wright3.yuvraj4.taylor5.mathews6.panda7.nayar8.kumar9.rahul.10.dinda11.mendis

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 11, 2013, 7:21 GMT

Whats Watson doing in the team? He is neither bowling or fielding properly.Spinners have worked out his ploy of slogsweeping them and now pitch the ball fuller to him. His batting is neither good. He should be in the team if wants to play as a allrounder but as a batsmen many others are better than him.He was man of the tournament becauseof his allround effort.

RR Team should be: Watson, Dravid, Rahane, Hodge, Binny, Kooper, D Yagnik, R shukla, S shreeshant, Trivedi, B Hogg

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 11, 2013, 6:22 GMT

@Narbavi His Avg SR is 117.If his played a lot of innings with a SR of 130 then he must have played even more innnings with a sr of less than of a 100.Being a top order batsmen its unacceptable.

  • Qa_ankit on April 11, 2013, 5:42 GMT

If i am Dravid, then i will be surely sweating right now. Reason is because after winning two big guns matches, i don't wan't to spoil my party by loosing to a team who have lost 9-10 game on a straight line. Now for me, best thing for me is to chase a target. I know its been difficult in starting matches but still its better to chase. Now talking about the hot topic, RR line up. As usual we all will predict some thing special. I don't think there will be much changes. But there are, then would love to see from foreign players. Who come's in and goes out? About last match, hero's were Cooper, Trivedi, Rahul Shukla, Hodge, Tait, Rahane etc. Agree they played really well. Brilliantly. But for me one small innings turned the match. Very important but though very un-noticed. Yagnik inning. To score 18 runs of insane Naraine over, change the target from 130+ to 145+. Other than that i am always with RR Team. Though i wish i could have batted in power play ;)

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 5:38 GMT

@Dravid_Gravitas: Only Cooper and to an extent Binny are reliable bowlers in that line up u mentioned, Sree we all know can be expensive and erratic anytime, good that he has bowled well so far, Shukla is a newcomer, Baby is another newcomer who is known more for his batting, expecting 4 overs from him is a bit too much, as i said already, till Watson is ready to bowl i don't think RR will drop a bowler to accomodate a batsman, they have no other go other than to preserve their top 3 wickets till the 12th over atleast!!

  • satishchandar on April 11, 2013, 5:31 GMT

Pune should bring in Wright at expense of anyone else.. Wright was in sublime form in BBL, in the T20 WC and almost every T20 game he played.. He is the most in form foreign player Pune got.. With the openers struggling, could well try out Finch too.. Finch, Wright, Mathews(just because he is the captain) and Mitch Marsh.. Let Samuels and Ross buy some time in the bench.. My 11 for Pune would be, Finch, Uthappa, Wright, Yuvi, Mathews, Manish/Suman, Nayar, Bhuvi, Dinda, Rahul Sharma and Ishwar Pandey.. Use Wright, Mathews, Yuvi and Wright for 6-8 overs..

  • on April 11, 2013, 5:19 GMT

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 11, 2013, 5:11 GMT

@Narbavi, Sree, Shukla, Cooper, Sachin Baby, Binny - 5 bowlers. May be Watson can also volunteer for an over or two if any of those 5 bowlers is having an off-day.

  • on April 11, 2013, 5:06 GMT

    1. Pandey 2. Finch 3. Wright 4. Yuvraj 5.Matthews 6. Uthappa 7. Rasool 8. Parnell 9.Bhuvanesh 10. dinda 11. Rahul sharma

Uthappa should bat down the order...

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 4:51 GMT

@Tal_Botvinnik: Wrong assessment!! Rahane is one for the future along with kohli and pujara, everyone is impressed with the lad's technique, his shots are so pleasing to the eye, he plays those beautiful strokes even in t20's and still has a strike rate close to 130!!

  • Sundara-Chandare on April 11, 2013, 4:09 GMT

  • ODI_BestFormOfCricket on April 11, 2013, 3:15 GMT

The first real mistake PWI made was making mathews as caption. He did nothing to PWI last season. If indian player were a caption of PWI, he would choose different set of foreign players for different conditions. He himself as a foreign player restricts one option and does not find correct combination of playing.

  • Narbavi on April 11, 2013, 3:10 GMT

@Dravid_Gravitas: You got to be kidding me, Dravid loves to play with 6 bowling options, if he follows your team he will be left with only 4 bowling options since Watson isn't bowling as of now, yes their batting needs to be strengthened, but can't compensate on bowling too, till Watson gets fit to bowl Yagnik needs to bat at 6 and RR's top 3 need to make sure they don't lose their wickets in the first 10-12 overs!!

  • on April 11, 2013, 3:04 GMT

Dravid should go with this XI.

Dravid and Rahane open. Watson,Hodge,Binny,Yagnik,Cooper,Badhree,Trivedi,Sreesanth,Rahul Shukla.

They can't play without a spinner again. Or Tait in Badhree out with Chandila in for Rahul Shukla

  • SpeedCricketThrills on April 11, 2013, 3:03 GMT

Warriors persist with a "wounded souldier" called Manish Pandey. Their coach is right - he has gone into a shell. He has to conquer his mind before he can conquer even a club class bowler. His inclusion in the team is a sure waste of slot. High time he is dropped if PWI is to have a chance

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 11, 2013, 2:52 GMT

ajinkya rahane reminds me so much of gautam gambhir. plays his ugly late-thirdman-dab shot(he doesn't guide it just pushes at it) very well (WIth no feet movement). He also drives a lot in the air. Tons of Runs in Ranji is no big deal if people like jadeja can notch triple-tons.This fellow is not the player for the future.(Will struggle against outswing)

If there is no team dynamics, it is difficult to win. Also, Matthew doesn't deserve to be a captain of an international team let alone srilankan team.. Too green.. How is he going to captain someone like yuvi and get the max out of him??

  • A__J on April 10, 2013, 21:41 GMT

In my opinion mathews should not be captain, it should be yuvraj. THen samuels should be dropped for smith or wright. Or drop matthews for smith or wright, or drop both! Frankly matthes and samuels have not been delivering. Give Mendis a chance to assist Sharma please, he is no use warming the bench!!! PWI have the personell except they are stuck to this rigid template that just does not work! THey have to get serious and make some changes.

  • on April 10, 2013, 20:53 GMT

I think luke wright or steven smith should be given a chance ahead of ajantha mendis as they lack a gud allrounder more than a bowler

  • DrVivekPS on April 10, 2013, 19:51 GMT

RR is the only unbeaten side in IPL6 now!!!! Here comes a great chance to score another win & stay @ the top of the table.... Every team need atleast 9 win out of the 16 matches to ensure a place in play offs. That means u can afford to lose 7.

Having won their first 2 matches , RR can position themselves @ a great chance to get into the play offs , if they win tmrws match......They need to win just 6 out of remaining 13 matches if they manage to pull it off tmrw...

It will be a huge blunder to name tmrws RR playing eleven ourselves, coz they will always keep changing their side and cme with some surprises.... Who thought an IPL team will play with a 5 pacer attack???????

RR is a great T20 side, but its just that they have nt clicked yet.. They lack a senior player who can be a mentor too....... DADA wud have been handy as a mentor!!! Angelo Mathews is a good player but i dont think he is a good captain..

Waiting to see Sachin Baby play!!! Hope Watson will hit frm tmrw!!!

  • on April 10, 2013, 19:32 GMT

RR should win this one. 1. Kursal, 2. Rahane, 3. Dravid, 4. Watson, 5. Hodge, 6. Binny, 7. Cooper, 8. Sachin Baby 9. Trivedi, 10. Sreesanth, 11. Harmeet or 1. Watson, 2. Rahane, 3. Dravid, 4. Binny, 5. Hodge, 6. Cooper, 7. Yagnik, 8. Faulkner, 9. Trivedi, 10. Sreesanth, 11. Harmeet. Both squads much better than (lack of fighting spirit) Pune

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on April 10, 2013, 19:14 GMT

Royals need to strengthen their batting a bit. Sachin Baby for Trivedi, Kusal for Tait. Kusal, Rahane, Watson, Hodge, Binny, Dravid, Sachin Baby, Dishant, Cooper, Sree, Shukla. A little weak in bowling but can bat to 9. Put up a big score or chase it down. Should not be a problem.

  • D.Rajeev on April 10, 2013, 18:56 GMT

The Captain cannot be blamed for the failure of the batsmen. I'm pretty sure that PWI will bounce back cause they have all the ingredients to be a successful team.

  • ThyrSaadam on April 10, 2013, 18:16 GMT

Not going to be too critical of Uthappa, but perhaps PWI's issue has been, not getting off to good starts. M Pandey has had basically 2 good innings in 5 years of IPL and is feeding off them. Unlike their coach who belives that the two openers have gone into their shells, they just need to bat steadily for the first 6 overs without loosing wickets and then go for the offensive in the remaining overs. With the kind of hitters they have in the midlle order their challenge seems to be just being able to bat out 20 overs, because if they do just that, 120-150 is easily possible in 14 overs , and that would put their total into a respectable realm.

Siddarth Ravindran:"When Yuvraj missed out on the game against Kings XI Punjab, they couldn't even manage to reach triple-figures, managing only 99." Wow Siddarth! When Yuvraj did play in the first game, the team made all of 104, 5 more than they managed without him. Yuvi's contribution was a majestic 2! What are we missing here? Yes, Yuvraj is a great asset and he will make a difference but your comparison using numbers from the previous game is rather...

Pune has a lot of foreign talent, tough to pick 4 out of them but Ajantha Mendis should be used against teams like RR, Punjab, Sunrisers as they have lot of young indian players in their playing 11, they wouldn't have faced him before so they are bound to struggle against him, Mendis shouldn't be used against CSK as Raina and Dhoni play him really really well!!

  • rijulshah on April 10, 2013, 16:42 GMT

how about opening with nayar. he has looked good...and as mentioned middle order is strong

  • rijulshah on April 10, 2013, 16:40 GMT

where is Ajanta Mendis ??? he was brought in at such high price just to warm the benches?? Pune pitch might just help his style of bowling and he can add much needed sting to pune bowling

  • Htc-Android on April 10, 2013, 16:35 GMT

@Tal_Botvinnik u picked the perfect team. I think Nayar should bat at No.3 and Mathews should bat No.5. Mathews gives his best when he bats at No.5 or 6. There is also Smith,Marsh and Rasool to do the hitting. May be they can replace marsh with Taylor, Since Mathews and wright also can provide some seam up options.

Royals is one of my fav team, partly cause my fav player, RD is their captain... they don't need any change in the team, except a KPerera coming in maybe... The rest of the team looks good.

For Pune, they need smith and Wright in the team, and injury to Samuels may actually be a blessing in disguise... Angelo matthews reminds me of Darren Sammy, except that Sammy has improved his batting, bowling and captaincy... But none seems to be working for Angelo right now... Uthappa has probably consumed an overdose of nerve relieving medicine, and will never come out of its effect. PWI could have got Laxman for a lot less, and he can do the same...!!!!

Considering Pune wicket I think its not a bad idea to play Harmeet/ Chandila in place of trivedi though he has done well. If required Binny can roll few overs and Sachin baby should be given a chance here. I will drop Watson not because of his form , simply because he doesnt bowl and we can get one more bowler/batsman if Kusal plays as wicket keeper. My team for RR would be .. Rahane *Kusal Dravid *Hodge Binny Sachin Baby *Cooper Shukla Harmeet/Chandila Shree *Tait

  • ShahidMalayil on April 10, 2013, 15:25 GMT

I think Sachin baby should be given a chance if you see the way he performed last Domestic season T20 @ 155 Strike Rate.

  • on April 10, 2013, 15:24 GMT

Rahul dravid has looked in great touch this season so far...he needs to play the anchor role and bat till the end so that the others can play strokes at will!!Pune dont have the fire power in their bowling as Rajasthan have.RR should bowl first as the pitch is good for the pacers early on and the likes of Tait,Sreesanth and cooper can restrict the below par Pune batting order(barring Yuvraj singh).

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 10, 2013, 15:23 GMT

Why is everybody blaming mathews? He was stranded in the match where dale mayhem against the tail occured. the tail should have played sensibily by defending the balls instead of wafting and going for expansive shots. Gettting 25 of a reddy is no big deal.

In the punjab match he got a really good ball on seaming pitch.

I don't see a fault in his captaincy if manish pandey wants to into the indian test team.R Taylor, M Samuels,Y Singh what have they done so far?

    MyXI: R Uthappa, L Wright, A Mathews, Y SIngh, S Smith, A Nayar, M Marsh, P Rasool ,A Dinda, B Kumar, R Sharma.

Remember the coach, trainers, and other big heads involve in picking a team not mathews, he can't put it.

  • TNAmarkFromIndia on April 10, 2013, 14:54 GMT

Robin Uthappa needs to play attacking cricket. If he thinks that making lots of runs at a slower pace in a T20 tournament is going to catch the selectors' eyes, then he is sadly mistaken. We need the attacking Uthappa back, the one who can single-handedly turn a game on its head, the one who has the ability to clear any boundary in the world. The way Uthappa is playing, he's actually losing us matches. Incredibly selfish batting.

i wish somebody to replace angelo mathews from captaincy, he doesn't deserve a place in playing 11 for PWI. My playing 11 ll be Finch, Uthappa, Smith, Yuvi, Taylor, luke wright/ marsh, Mithun Manhas, Parvez Rasol, bhuvneshwar kumar, Dinda/ rahul sharma,Ishwar pandey

  • Narbavi on April 10, 2013, 14:26 GMT

Since Watson is their most important batsman and since they are a batsman short i would like to see him bat at 3, even if a early wicket falls there will be relief in the camp that Watson is still there to go and bat, also Dravid is best utilised as an opener as he scores more during the powerplay overs, and Watson ideally likes to go after the spinners in the middle overs!!

  • Narbavi on April 10, 2013, 14:23 GMT

I expect the royals to make a couple of changes again despite winning the last game, the problem for Royals is their lower middle order, cooper is not even a bowling all rounder, he just swings the bat wildly and he bats at 6 and sreesanth at 8, this could hurt them if early wickets fall, they will bring in Baby i guess to bat at 6 once watson starts bowling!!

  • Dhruv_Kush on April 10, 2013, 14:19 GMT

Big Fan of Royals, the start was brilliant lets keep it that way all the way.
