Match facts

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

Before the IPL began, if a poll was taken to predict which team would lose its first three matches, Delhi Daredevils wouldn't have got many votes. Despite the loss of Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor, the table-toppers from the previous season seemed to have enough firepower in the line-up. The absence of their spearhead Morne Morkel, busy with the domestic competition in South Africa, and Virender Sehwag, who was struggling with a bad back, set them back further. Morkel returned for the previous match but couldn't stop Mumbai Indians' marauding batsmen.

As they look to snap their losing streak, Daredevils will be boosted by the return of Sehwag, which means they will be able to field a full-strength line-up (among players available for this season) for the first time. What will also encourage them will be the fact that they are up against Sunrisers Hyderabad, generally regarded as one of the weaker teams in the competition despite their two wins from the first three matches.

Sunrisers have begun surprisingly well, largely on the back of a formidable bowling unit. Dale Steyn continues to show why he's the premier bowler in world cricket, Amit Mishra continues to show why he has been such a success in the IPL over the past six seasons, Thisara Perera has sparkled with both bat and ball, and even Ishant Sharma, usually not the most reliable of bowlers in limited-overs, has been tidy. Their batting isn't exactly fear-inducing though, with several little-knowns who are unlikely to be consistent match-winners.

Watch out for ...

Daredevils' spin attack: One of the big weaknesses in Daredevils' squad last season was the lack of experienced spinners. They tried to address that by recruiting South Africa's Johan Botha and Sri Lanka's Jeevan Mendis, both of whom can bat as well. Neither of them have impressed in the chances they got so far. Will they turn to another overseas allrounder, Roelof van der Merwe, to partner Shahbaz Nadeem or will they give 20-year-old left-arm spinner Pawan Negi a go?

Kumar Sangakkara: In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, Sunrisers' batting is heavily dependent on their foreign stars. While Perera and Cameron White have contributed, their captain Sangakkara hasn't yet hit his stride. Given the limited number of game-changing batsmen in the line-up, Sunrisers need a big innings from Sangakkara soon.

Stats and trivia

  • With 45 wickets for Daredevils, Morne Morkel is just one wicket behind Amit Mishra, the leading wicket-taker for the franchise
  • Thisara is among the most nomadic of IPL players, having represented four different franchises in four seasons: he began with Chennai Super Kings in 2010, moved to Kochi Tuskers in 2011, switched to Mumbai Indians in 2012 and is currently with Sunrisers
  • Over the past week, Sangakkara became the second wicketkeeper, after Pakistan's Kamran Akmal, to complete 100 dismissals in Twenty20s

Quotes

"Viru (Sehwag) is improving, he is getting better with every passing day. But we will take a decision on him only tomorrow. There is still 24 hours for the match, so there is plenty of time for him to be fully fit."
Morne Morkel

This would be an interesting game especially because of the two captains. When Mahela was captain, Sanga was hit lieutenant and vise versa. So they know each others' game very well and will try to out smart the other. With Shewag in the team, it will be a hard time for Hyderabad because their batting has been a problem despite the two wins thanks to the bowlers. If Sangakkara fails in this match too, he will consider resting himself out passing the captaincy baton to White. Mahela did the same in the last IPL.

DD need to back Andre Russell to finish innings with bat, if they give him confidence and back him to go after it I'm sure he can be destructive in IPL he's also a top class fielder (especially on boundary) and can give you some overs with the ball. Offers much much more to a T20 side than Mendis does.

What is the use of sangakara if he can't perform? He might be some player at international level but as fasr as IPL is concerned he is problematic player.

Sunrisers need to put Darren Sammy the West Indian captain, leader of the T20 world champions for this game to win it. Put him in and he will more than cancel out any effect Sehwag may have. As everyone has already noticed each time in the IPL seems to need West Indian in their lineup to have a realistic chance of winning the IPL trophy, and Sammy is as good as any.

Do you count Sanga's catches when he does not keep wickets? You see to do do! Is this fair to Kamran Akmal?

Cant understand why it is difficult for Sehwag to stay at the crease for just 20 overs. If he can do that, DD will be the champions. If facing newball is the problem for him of late, then he can sure come at 3 or 4.

With Sehwag in, the Delhi Daredevils will have at least moral boost in their thinking to start with. I hope with the back stabbing that Sehwag has been receiving from the Selectors (for not even considered in the Probables), he will definitely try to prove something and Sun Risers will be the best team to face on his return. This also will be an excellent opportunity for the crowd to watch the action between Sehwag and Dale Steyn. Also Sanga Vs. Mahela. Excellent combination for the Crowd to enjoy. I hope the match will be good for every one to enjoy. after all the T20 is meant for that. Let us hope for the best!!!!

  • POSTED BY on | April 12, 2013, 9:04 GMT

If sehwag is fit DD should drop Unmukt Chand....two 1st ball ducks in 3 matches is horrible

  • POSTED BY andrew27994 on | April 12, 2013, 9:04 GMT

Sangakkara needs to start performing with the bat and if he doesn't then he's going to be a liability in the team because as captain it will be pretty hard to dislodge him from the playing XI even with de Kock back in the side. White, Perera and Steyn are irreplacable at the moment. So the current 4 overseas players will stick throughout the ttournament except in Chennai. What is good for SRH is that they have the perfect replacements for their SL veterans, i.e de Kock for Sanga and Sammy for Perera. But SRH will miss Dhawan a lot. I think AA Reddy should be replaced by Karan Sharma / Sachin Rana. They are much better all-rounders than him and after the way he bowled last match against RCB , clearly he shouldn't play

  • POSTED BY trav696 on | April 12, 2013, 7:50 GMT

This will be interesting... Sangakarra's Sunrisers vs Jayawardene's Daredevils. The 2 greats of SL cricket butting heads in this clash, haha. Hope it is a high scoring match and the daredevils get their first win.

  • POSTED BY Baseball-Sucks on | April 12, 2013, 7:26 GMT

Mahela should not bat down the order. He must open with Sehwag or bat at no.3. It would be an awesome battle between 2 best friends :)) (of course not a Kohli-Gambhir type of battle)

  • POSTED BY SAFan11 on | April 12, 2013, 7:26 GMT

SH should really give Quinton de Kock a game if their other overseas batsmen are not performing. He is a super talent in great form and is very highly regarded here in SA. He is only 20 and it won't be long before he is a star on the international stage.

  • POSTED BY PerfectTen on | April 12, 2013, 7:25 GMT

Desperate times for DD! If they lose this, it'll be an uphill task since they still have to face strong teams like RCB & CSK. Somehow, under Mahela, the unit is not showing the hunger. This is no comment on him as a captain or his contribution to the team as a batsman. The spark is missing and you need guys like Sehwag and Roelof at the middle to re-ignite them. My 11 for this match: Sehwag, Warner, Chand, Mahela, Juneja, Roelof, Ojha, Pathan, Morkel, Negi & Umesh. Warner should be used as a leg-spinner just like White is used by SRH for an over or two. Ashish Nehra is a spent force and should be utilized during the nets. If Ojha fails now, Gautam should be in for the next game.

  • POSTED BY binojusjp on | April 12, 2013, 6:51 GMT

Regardless of who is going to win the match, I wish all very best for both teams. It is nice to see that two Lankan legends are leading both sides.

My Team for Delhi: Unmukt Chand, Warner, Sehwag,Jayawardena,Juneja, Irfan,Umesh Yadav,,Roelef vander Merwe ,Morkel, Agarkar, Nadeem/Pawan Negi

  • POSTED BY jimbond on | April 12, 2013, 6:01 GMT

Delhi are a bit lightweight this time. KP has left a big hole. And they sold Ross taylor, hence there is no replacement either. And Sehwag got injured, and Pathan/Yadav are still recovering from injury. Mahela is out of form, but he should continue, not sure whether he should open though. Morkel is another automatic inclusion, and also could be warner. Its the fourth foreign player slot which is a bit weak. Jeevan Mendis and Russel are both struggling. Nadeem is a shadow of the player seen last year- no harm in giving negi a try. Many of the Delhi guys need to achieve a major turnaround if the Delhi team is to progress far.

  • POSTED BY PadMarley on | April 12, 2013, 5:27 GMT

Take my word guys! Mahela will plot the trick on Thisara!! He knows this boy's pulses, and his weaknesses. Whether his bowlers be able to deliver that plot is a different matter. I think Jeevan should be given another chance... He is a very useful leggie with a googly, and can bat. For the interest of the tournament, it would be good if Delhi wins.

@ajayverma.iitkgp: Yes, i forget to mention the name of Ajit Agarkar. Really he shld pick in place of Nehra if necessary. Ajit is a good swing bowler not as worst as Nehra rite now. So my team 1. Sehwag 2. Warner 3. Chand/Ojha 4. Jaywarne 5. Russel 6. Pathan 7. Ojha/Chand 8. Agarkar 9. Morkel 10. Yadav 11. Nehra /Negi If they play in that order they can beat any side. Attack is best option than defence. All the best DD!!

  • POSTED BY Tal_Botvinnik on | April 12, 2013, 4:20 GMT

Sanga knows the team's game well ,but the team doesn't know sanga's game as well all his dismissals came off trying to go for the big shots why? because his partners were doing his role.He should anchor the innings and later go for the big shots while the rest have to go bang! bang! first ball itself.

The biggest problem for sunrisers is their lack of solid opening pair..inclusion of quinton de kock can solve this problem ...most of them haven't seen him play and his confidence will be high with his recent 97 off 61 balls in sa's t20 league...i respect sanga a lot but he needs to be rested just to see how de kock performs...

I am watching tomorrows game only to watch thissara pereras batting. This guy keeps improving day by day with the bat. If he can improve his shot range on the offside, then he will be a devastating hitter. He has the power to clear the ropes. He already looks dangerous even with the limited shot range on the leg side.

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | April 11, 2013, 22:55 GMT

It is well known that SHR batting is weak in absence of Dhawan. Four foreign players included against RCB were Sanga, White, Perera & Steyn. Three of these are batsmen & SRH expects at least one of them contributing a big score >70 & other 2 contributing at least 30 runs to make a competitive total. In the match against RCB, all 3 did contribute but not to these expected levels. In addition SRH bowling failed in the death overs. Captain Sanga's bringing on Mishra in the "death overs", was the turning point of the match. Ashish Reddy was a safer bet & should have been the go-to guy. SDH won the first 2 matches & lost the third thru' bowling. DD albeit lost the first 3,is still a strong team. If they are at their full strength, they will match any IPL side. Yadev, Agarkar, Morkel + Nadeem & Negi are a great bowling combo. Warne, Sehwag & Chand are power pack. SRH has to bowl tightly & bat well to be competitive. If DD is at full strength, Odds favour their first Win. Good Luck guys!

i dont think inclusion of viru may change the dd fate in my opinion dd now at moment is a good squad and what they lack is a middle order hard hitter what kevin did in last ipl so not viru try to recruit a new player in the middle order

Without KP N RYDER their side looks weaker. Their bowling attack is gud but really missing finishers in the middle and final overs. If Sehwag play his presense may boost the moral of Delhi. My team for DD shld be: 1 Sehwag 2. Warner 3. Chand 4. Jaywardane 5. Mendis 6. Juneja 7 Pathan 8 M Morkel 9. Negi/Nadeem 10. Umesh yadav 11. Nehra I think Agarkar shld start the proceeding with M Morkel. Middle ovr control by Nehra n yadav! All the Best we want DD WIN HERE
