Gautam Gambhir's 18th IPL half-century - now a record - set up the perfect platform for Eoin Morgan to exploit while Jacques Kallis coolly sat back and kept alternating the strike. With Kolkata Knight Riders' big three taking them to 180 on a pitch that had prompted both sides to pick an extra spinner each, their bowlers defended the total without a threat from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After Gambhir won the toss, Manvinder Bisla got the Kolkata innings going by getting stuck into the part-time offspin of Hanuma Vihari in the second over. Gambhir let Bisla take the risks as he himself went solidly in the Powerplay, but the sight of legspin, and the ball turning into him, was an invitation he didn't refuse. In Amit Mishra's first over, Gambhir took two boundaries down the ground, and even though the other legspinner Karan Sharma got Bisla, Gambhir kept going strong in those middle overs.

In the next two overs, Gambhir took a four and a six off the legspinners, taking Kolkata to 76 for 1 after 10. Kallis had begun to shake off his slow start by the time Gambhir finally fell to Ashish Reddy in the 14th over, but it was Morgan who provided them the real impetus. He got going with a bit of a mis-hit off Mishra, which carried over long-on. The last 28 balls, including that six, yielded 70 runs.

Thisara Perera bore most of the brunt of the Morgan assault when 22 came off the 18th over bowled by him. It contained two flat pulls and a cut for fours, a straight six, and one wide to boot. Morgan was run out in the 19th over, but Kallis finished off well, registering an almost inconspicuous 41 off 27. Morgan looted 47 off 21.

Sunrisers have surprised many so far in the tournament, but they have done so chasing lowish totals. They have always seemed light at the top, and it was reiterated despite the promotion of Cameron White to open the innings. All it took Kolkata was to remain steady and straight with the ball, and even into the seventh over, the openers were struggling with a strike rate of under a run a ball.

If it were the spinners - IPL debutant Sachithra Senananayake and Sunil Narine - that built the pressure at the top, Kallis the allrounder bothered Parthiv Patel with bowling short and straight. It finally produced the wickets of the openers, and the 113 required to get in 9.3 overs were always going to be too many on the slowish track. And so it proved to be, giving Kolkata their biggest win at home.

Either Kallis or Morgan should've been the MOM.Nice to see two mystery spinners bowl in tandem.

@ Everybody (Critics of Sanga)

If You look at sanga ODIS:Keeper: avg-40.27, Non Keeper:-26.26 T20is: Keeper:-30.00,s/r-125.00, Non Keeper;- Never Batted without keeping. Keeping allows sanga to read the pitch earlier and then play accordingly. Solution: Sanga as keeper.

@ mrgupta - Class is permanent is such a old cliche now. In Franchise cricket it is all about making money. SRT can pull crowds just by being in the team so it is fine if he is not in form but overseas players need to be in form to be in the team. Sanga for example is a class act in tests but t20 is is below average. JP is much better match winner than him. I do not understand IPL franchise's liking for SL captains. They are not strategy geniuses. They had murli to win all the matches. Since murli they are struggling. Jaya, Sanga, Matthews are all below average captains in T20.

Posted by mrgupta on (April 15, 2013, 6:54 GMT)

@Martin Ford: Adding to that, a brilliant spell of bowling. 4 overs for 13 runs and 3 wickets. @abcdef_12345: FYI, form is temporary, class is permanent. Kallis cannot be replaced by anyone in SA team let alone in an IPL franchise.

Posted by sensible-indian-fan on (April 15, 2013, 6:09 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks - Oh please!!! Don't play that angle on us. We indians LOVE SL players. Fortunately or unfortunately its the INDIAN Premier League which means there are ONLY 4 foreign slots. So the emphasis on foreign players performing is sooo much more because there are other good players warming the bench.

If we indians come to SLP, it would be the same case. If Raina doesn't perform, he would have to sit out for someone who does. That's the way it is.

Your argument is weak from every conceivable angle.

You are the same guy who told Watson is NOT as good as Kusal Perrera because he is not in form, right?

Haha. T20 is different from test matches and you saw what happened in the last match.

Posted by CricFan707 on (April 15, 2013, 5:30 GMT)

Should bring in TENDO in place of senanayake in next game. Don't know why Gambhir doesn't take a class player like ten doeschate who is a master of T20. He's being wasted at KKR. Gambhir and KKR management are responsible for that. Or they can even remove Kallis who performs once in 4 games.

Posted by Jezinho on (April 15, 2013, 5:18 GMT)

Who chooses the man of the match award? Surely Kallis' contribution of 41 with a strike rate of 151% and his 3-13 off fours overs (including the breakthrough of both openers) surpasses Gambir's relatively pedestrian 53 (strike rate 117%).

Can't believe that Gambhir was given the MOM. Poor Kallis.

I think Sanga should keep. He does it well. Otherwise if he's out of form. We may have to replace him. But if he's not there i might not watch the matches. So sanga should stay.. :D

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 3:38 GMT)

Sanga is out of form, but he's a good captain.. Some teams rely on their captain as well. Sanga should sit one out. Give dhawan the place, to see if it get's any better. Or sanga should take gloves, parthiv benched. Or we Sanga or Dhawan can bat down the order.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 2:53 GMT)

Kallis should have been given the MAN OF THE MATCH award..He ia true legend..wen comparing him with ponting he is a gr8 genius...Kallis Rockzzz....

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 1:28 GMT)

How is it that Ghambir wins Man of the Match with a 50 when Kallis scored 40-odd and took 3 wickets for next to nothing?

Posted by Jaggadaaku on (April 15, 2013, 1:24 GMT)

Kallis or Morgan deserved to be won Man of the Match award. Why Gambhir won the Man Of the Match award? God only knows....

Posted by AneYako on (April 14, 2013, 22:57 GMT)

@sanjaycrickfan: Remove Perera? LOL! What am I even reading. The team would be absolutely pathetic without him. He is the only one who is performing well. And at the end of the day you can complain about Sanga all you want but without his captaincy this team wouldn't have even won this many matches. On paper and in performance they are sub-par. Outside of Mishra no one else from the indian players are helping the team

Posted by Dhutugemunu on (April 14, 2013, 22:23 GMT)

@ Ankamsiva; Duminy and Sammy are both not available according to Sunrisers Wikipedia page. So they have to use limited resources they have.

plz drop sanga forever he pulls srh down , earlier he failed with kings 11 punjab when he was captain. he is useless at t20 format. play darren sammy. he is miles better with bat and he can bowl 4 overs too. srh plz drop sanga for all future matches.

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (April 14, 2013, 20:44 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks, some of the non-Indian players' posters that I have from the modern generation are: KP, Lara, Chanders, Swann, Wasim, Waqar, Imran, Warne, Qadir, Michael Hussey, Sanga, Mahela, Shane Bond, Hadlee, Murali, Steyn, Donald and Kallis. Go figure! If you are so touchy about justified criticisms, why not stay away from discussion boards? My intentions are good, for all I know. Saying that critcising Sanga or Srilankans is my motto, doesn't change Sanga's, Mahela's and the dead-weight Mathews numbers in this IPL, so far. Go figure! Other club-level Indians failed, you mean Mishra, Ishant and Vihari? They didn't do as bad as you might want to think. But still, is that an invitation for Sanga also to fail? Did he score a 30 ball 40 or 45??!! Get a grip. Will you?

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 20:11 GMT)

If you back back & look at past 5 seasons of IPL you will see that sanga has never score 400 runs in any season. Sanga is just not a good t20 player, last year sanga scored 200 runs in 12 matches at 108.69 & JP Duminy scored 244 runs in 9 matches at 128.42! White 479 in 13 @ 149.68 & Dhawan scored 569 runs in 15 @ 129.61. The statistics do not lie, sanga just cannot score in t20 games. No one is asking him to hit, even kallis & tendulkar in past ipl scored tons of runs by hitting 4s. Quinton de Kock just finished a t20 tournament in SA & he was highest run maker. I think it is time for sanga to step down & give him a chance. Also can you really blame the lack of indian talent? Andhra/hyd doesnt have a strong domestic group of players. All the top odi/t20 players are not going to be released by their teams. CSK & RCB wont release kohli or raina, so there isnt enough talent left.

Posted by JG2704 on (April 14, 2013, 20:04 GMT)

@ SurlyCynic - For once I agree with you. When I checked after reading your comment I presumed it had gone to Morgan - just because he gave the innings that impetus but Kallis did it with both bat and ball and with the bat at a good SR

@ Baseball-Sucks - I suppose so many are lambasting Sanga because he's contributed nothing with the bat throughout the IPL so far. White has. And re Patel , you may be right but you have less spots available for overseas players so with more quality waiting in the wings there is more emphasis on the overseas players performing

@ JamesSmithee on (April 14, 2013, 19:31 GMT) Watson didn't even play in this game. Giving him the man of the match award for this game really would be a bizarre choice

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 19:54 GMT)

@ BOBO, Greatest_Game ,sensible-indian-fan ,Dravid_Gravitas ; We expect nothing except criticisms toward our SL players from u guys since its the IPL. :) No surprises at all. But the fact is Sanga n Mahela are legends of the game n they have nothing to prove in a domestic competition. They have done it all n paid their dues. So if u think that the outcome of a T20 league match (not even international) let u pass judgement on the players like them, the joke is on u.

For the people who say that this is Sanga's last IPL,

The IPL has such a big brand value, tnx to those stars like Sanga, Mahela, Ponting, ST, Gilly etc. The organizers aren't interested in the results of games. They have already met their "money-wise"expectations. May be the fans of particular teams aren't happy with the results of some matches. They just have to deal with it. But the truth is players like Sanga n Mahela will continue to play n get their fat paychecks for next couple of years whether u like it or not.

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 14, 2013, 19:31 GMT)

@BOBO.BBOO.BBOO.BBBO.BOOO.BBBB.OOOO. It is a low scoring match. A batsmen should received the award. It is clearly watson. Watson should be the MOM. He is the only one who batted with confident. When he was out the match was very much to the RR. Samson is a keeper. Keepers doesn't get MOM awards for catches. 3rd ball samson give a simple catch to the first slip. But watson didn't. He scored more with higher SR, with no chances.

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 14, 2013, 19:20 GMT)

The problem in SRH is not with Sanga. It is due to low resources ( due to low funding) and incapable coach. He has to identify roles of the players and utilize resources. He has to talk to some Indian batsmen and asked them to be aggressive in first 8 overs. Which Indian players can be matched to Gambir, Pathan ? No one but someone can be matched to them by changing the attitudes. Only thing they lack is aggressiveness in first 6 overs. ATM except Perera and white, all trying to play anchor roles. Send Perera early and replace his position at 6 with Styne. He is strong hitter too.

Posted by Slizzle on (April 14, 2013, 19:10 GMT)

who making these man of the match decisions? Steyn over Mishra the other night and Gambir over both Kallis and Morgan today.....insane, now the Cameron White has moved to open they may as well give De Kock a chance

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 14, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

First SR don't have any class batsmen like Sanga. White hit with luck and power but he is not a good batsmen. Problem with SRH is they totally depends on foreign players. Only Mishra is reliable. When picking the team they has to pick 2 batsmen and 2 bowlers. Styne, perera and two batsmen. I don't think replacing sanga is the best option. Indian batsmen has to take some responsibility and hit in first few overs. But they doesn't trying it. Today patel bats with SR about 100 when they needs runs more than 180. sanga is not a big hitter. He is a player like ST. I haven't seen someone who can find gaps in offside like he does. Sanga is a world class batmen in any format. But he is in pressure. If sanga is in the side he should remove from the captaincy and should be opened. That's the only way SRH can survive. If Indian batsman wants to consolidate they can do it after 6 overs.

A biased decision on choosing man of the match tonight. My pick is Jack Kallis. He out played sunrises with his bawling and batting. What you say?

@ TommytuckerSaffa and other fans questioning MoM award

Its true that Kallis should have been given MoM. But it doesn't mean you need to be an Ind to win MoM. GO through this score-card of today's match between RR and KXIP.

Sreesnath, Trivedi have way better bowling figures than Faulkner. Sanju could have also been given MoM for his 4 dismissals behind the wicket and important 27 runs he scored but it was Faulkner- An Australian who got MoM. It seems, MoM's been given randomly. lol

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 14, 2013, 18:54 GMT)

There is two things ICC must not allowed to give slot for IPL IPL is highly polarized - See MOM awards Only 4 overseas players allowed in a team.

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (April 14, 2013, 18:44 GMT)

@ Baseball-Sucks

In those 3 victories, mediocre Amit Mishra (2nd Highest Wicket-taker in IPL history) and mediocre Ishant Sharma (who is performing as good as Steyn) have major contributions. Mediocre Hanuma Vihari helped win one match by taking the match to super over. In fact, it is because of these 2 mediocre Ind bowlers + Mediocre Vihari + Steyn + White + Perera, SH have been able to win 3 matches.

Sanga is a Legend, We know that. But he is a mediocre T-20 batsman. He doesn't keep wickets either. White has more experience of Captaining t-20 sides as he does back in Australia/ BBL. So Sanga has failed to justify his place as a batsman. We are not against Sanga but he can motivate himself by seeing Dravid (whom we know as a Test Match batsman), how he is leading from the front, scoring runs, managing his resources(whatever he has got) well and more importantly contributing to team's win.

Posted by kevepere on (April 14, 2013, 18:32 GMT)

Dhawan better return soon first he said he will miss the opener. then said he will miss first five matches. Now five mathes are finished. SRH does not have good indian batsman so batting is a worry. 1. Dhawan 2. PA Reddy 3. Patel 4. White 5. Perera 6. Sammy 7. Vihari/AA Reddy 8. Mishra 9. Steyn 10. KV Sharma 11 Sharma...

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (April 14, 2013, 18:29 GMT)

Gauti getting MoM is justified.

After Kallis's poor performance in first 3 matches, everyone was criticizing him and asking for replacement. But Gauti showed faith in him and King Kallis delivered today both with bat and ball. So obviously, Gauti was Man of the Match for his clever decision making.

Jokes apart, it was really surprising to see Kallis not getting MoM.

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (April 14, 2013, 18:26 GMT)

@ abcdef_12345

lol u were saying something about Kallis ? The fact is Kallis is irreplaceable, the amount of experience/ balance he brings to the side is immense and today's match just showed that. We all love Shakib but he is nothing in front of King Kallis.

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (April 14, 2013, 18:21 GMT)

I'm a huge fan of Sanga but I don't undrstand y some fans especially SL fans are not accepting the fact tht Sanga is a mediocre t-20 player. They r giving excuses tht Ind players in SH are ordinary. Man ! Mishra and Ishant r doing very fine job just like Steyn. Also, Mishra is 2nd highest wicket-taker in IPL. Nw u might say tht Ind batsmen in SH are ordinary, means u needed Star-Studded team to captain ? can u explain y Matthews is failing despite having Excellent Ind players and Explosive Overseas players in his team (PWI). Yuvi, Utthappa, Dinda, Rahul Sharma, Finch, Samules, Bhuvi, Ross. Wht else u want ? The fact is it is the Captain who leads frm d front. But Sanga is a FAILED T-20 player and Captain. Look at Dravid, With Half-fit-Out of-form Watson(who is nt even bowling) and average Ind and Overseas players, he is leading frm the front and winning matches for his team RR. Stop making excuses, mates. Replacing Sanga with Sammy/ Duminy is the need of the hour.

How come Ghambhir man of the match ahead of kallis?????

Posted by kevepere on (April 14, 2013, 18:12 GMT)

Main problem with SRH is that they dont have Indian local talent compared to other teams. Just look at the players they have. The other problem is sanga and white contribution. SRH management must be given some management skills . they got rid of rohit sharma. what a loss. Lets analyse SRH , only 2 explosive batsman for the whole team but yet not consistent... indians playing are not upto the mark. Bowling is quite good . So lets give SRH 3/10 for batting and 7/10 for bowling. CSK would get 9/10 for batting with all local talents such as raina, badri, vijay, dhoni, jadeja and 7 or 8 /10 for bowling. MI would also get 8/10 for batting with rayudu, karthik and sharma. Bowling 8/10 for MI..... RCB batting 9/10 and bowling 7/10 ... KKR batting 8/10 and bowling 6.5/10

@ Great_Lion

Even Kumble has scored an international 100 against England in England. Does that make him a good batsman ? or even batsman ?

Posted by Nehans on (April 14, 2013, 17:45 GMT)

Its very clear while selecting MOM local players are preferred over foreign players, first Dravid over cooper than mishra over steyn and now Gambhir over Kallis,

Posted by phunny_game on (April 14, 2013, 17:26 GMT)

I see a lot of people are saying that Sanga's failure was due to the opening partnership. But he hasn't performed in any other match as well... And even if they did not perform well, does that mean any other player has got the excuse to fail??? Similar thing happened to CSK last night and they won, didn't they. If Sanga is playing T20 cricket, there is no excuse to a below 100 strike rate, and no substantial contribution for some time now.

Patel has to be persisted with since there is a dearth of Indian quality batsman in the team, but there are other overseas batsman in the team. White is a proven performer. He was the second highest scorer for DC after Dhawan last season. So he and Patel have to be in the team. I don't think DeKock is an exceptional talent, but he will be a welcome change to the SRH right now.

Posted by Great_Lion on (April 14, 2013, 17:22 GMT)

some indians blame to sanga for the lose of match. This is not sanga's fault.this is because of untalented indians in the team.they can't perform and all overseas players in the squad know that.So there have a big pressure to foreign players to perform specially guys like sanga.if sanga have free license u can see how hard hitter he is.if u not watching much cricket like this indians who put comments this site plz check his innings of 90(43) against india.

TIME FOR BIG CHANGES!!!

"Sanga to repalce with De-cock." Give Captaincy to White.(I don't know why Sanga is looking so DUMB & DULL in the field, SANGA please be Positive.) PLEASE bring SAMMY & DHAWAN as soon as possible. If sammy available then give rest to Steyn as he has some neck problem use him for crucial matches. Use Indian All-rounders well. Samantray is not bowled vs RCB. Sachin rana is also an all-rounder with good strike rate. Don't give ball to VIHARI in first 6 overs. be courageous. TEAM vs PUNE will be 1. Quinton de Cock, 2. Akshat Reddy 3. Parthiv Patel (wk) 4.White(C) 5.Hanuma Vihari 6.Tishara Perera 7.Sachin Rana 8.Ashish Reddy 9.Amit Mishra 10. Steyn 11.Ishant Sharma. 5b+3al+3b= a win. be confident & Let's RISE

@ Baseball-Sucks wrote "There was a game plan. But the opening pair didn't stick to the plan n everything fell a part from there."

You are clearly well informed about Sunrisers' strategy. Please tell us who created the "game plan?" Was it the captain? If the plan goes wrong, is the person responsible for the plan not at fault?

A required run rate of 11.27 is a batsman's SR of 187.833. Morgan's SR was 223.8. Kallis' was 151.85. Their averaged SR was 187.825, the RRR SRH needed when Sanga came in. However, you wrote that "there was no point of Sanga to be there..." Why was there no point? Morgan & Kallis achieved exactly that run rate! Was there no point because Sanga cannot bat like Morgan or Kallis, or because Sanga was "sticking to the plan," & the plan was for him to throw his wicket away after 2 balls?

You wrote "If you can't understand a simple thing like that…" Well, we can't understand "this simple thing" of "no point" in chasing what KKR achieved. Please help us.

Thanks

Sanga in this IPL - 5 matches, 84 runs, 95.45 strike-rate, 16.80 average. One has to be a blind fanatic to say that Sanga's batting is not one of the biggest factors for the troubles of SRH. Add to that, his horrible captaincy in utilising Steyn. Sanga is the match ka mujrim in all the losses so far. If he was a player he would be out by now. Horrible fact is the he is captain and an overseas one at that. Team balance getting a complete beating as a result of his overseas-captain slot.

Posted by sensible-indian-fan on (April 14, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

The comments baseball_sucks is hilarious. This result was as predictable as it gets. Give Sunrisers a high scoring pitch and they would lose (barring some crazy performance by a few). When Sammy arrives, he must come in place of Sanga. And if White doesn't perform well, DeKock must be tried out in his place. I would straightaway make Sammy the captain when he arrives.

Actually the IPL think tank for a few teams is pretty BAD.

Take the case of Ponting. He is getting by because MI is winning due to the crazy form of Karthick and Pollard. These 2 guys won't be able to keep it for all the 16 matches. Its going to real fun watching MI continue with Ponting.

I am certain this is the last IPl for sangakkara..he has been a big disappointment..Overall his record in t20s for sl is also very poor...he should sit out for the rest of the games and give sammy a chance....he sat out in the last season too because of his poor batting...

@Baseball-Sucks, you are right mate. No Srilankan player is at fault in IPL. The problem is with the club-level Indian cricketers as well as the club-level Indian owners. The international class Srilankan cricketers are a misfit amongst us club-level Indians. I think the Indian club-level teams and cricketers will do better to have club-level Indians as captains so that we can relieve the international class Srilankan players from their misery to lead our club-level Indian cricketers and owners. Are you happy now. Go figure!

Common indian fans. Why do u put the blame on sangas batting? When the team needed to score at 9 an over, both patel and white scored at a run a ball partnership for 9 overs and put the pressure on the rest of the batsman. Sanga came into bat when the team needed to score 11 or 12 runs an over. He is a type of guy who needs time settle down and then go after the balling. It will be difficult for him to slog at that situation. I think sanga should open then innings next time. He will be good at finding the gaps when the fielders are inside the ring. May they can replace white with Duminy or De cock.

Posted by maddy20 on (April 14, 2013, 15:53 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks So whats your excuse for the other 4 matches where Sanga failed with the bat.. MISERABLY. His best score is less than run-a-ball 22!

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (April 14, 2013, 15:39 GMT)

Sanga is costing SRH dearly with his horrible batting. Mathews, Sanga and Mahela are turning out to be liabilities this year. At least Sanga and Mahela are legends. What did the dead-weight Mathews do to get captaincy? Hilarious!

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 15:35 GMT)

Is Darren Sammy available for pic yet?? SRH really need some fire power in their line-up, and with his handy medium pace, he could add some merit to the team

Posted by suve on (April 14, 2013, 15:24 GMT)

Parthiv Patel has to leave the team. Sanga won SRH two games single handedly with his captaincy and Im sure if the openers get a good start Sanga can bat through the innnings. Parthiv Patel is not a great wicketkeeper, he used up 31 balls at a strike rate of 81 is very poor in T20's. If Sanga didn't play the first 4 games for SRH, then SRH would be at the bottom of the table atm. SRH are missing Shikhar Dhawan very badly, if he opened the batting then SRH would be a great contender.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 15:23 GMT)

@Greatest_Game ; What are talking about ? Have you watched the game at least ? That Patel guy n White had already done the irreversible damage when Sanga came to the crease. Then suddenly White got out by trying to hit it out of the park which he should have tried to do when fielding restrictions were on. So there was no point of Sanga to be there n try to build the innings. He was forced to go for big shots. If you can't understand a simple thing like that, may be you shouldn't comment here. The opening pair, Patel n White , is totally responsible for the defeat. Why do you think White got promoted to open the inning ? He was supposed to go for lofted shots from the get go. There was a game plan. But the opening pair didn't stick to the plan n everything fell a part from there.

Well guys, we have to take some 4 from foreign soil, other than that Ishanth and Mishra select themselves. out of these six from leven we need extra 5 players. None get select themselves. SRH has got shoratage of 5 players and mundane task on every time on other six players. It is the issue of management than any player(shortage) I believe.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 14, 2013, 15:09 GMT)

Please some one go and tell Mr Sanga that don't give opening spell to Vihari. Of course we got Gayle's wicket for luck, and you cannot depend on luck every time. In fact other teams are getting a confident start by targeting Vihari, and Dale's spell is going in vain if there is no pressure from other end. Team management should give responsibilities to Sanga as keeping wickets( in NETS), participate in Strategic timeout (With Cooldrink bottles in hand), guiding other player how not to show face feelings in out of form situation and may be he should also teach/train local boys English in presentation ceremony.

@ baseballsucks. The purpose of an anchor is to keep a ship from drifting away….somewhat like Sang's batting and captaincy are…blown away by the first puff of wind.

An anchor is supposed to stick around! To keep the ship grounded. That is not happening with Sunrisers!

how did gambhir get the man of the match when kallis made a score of 41 and took 3 wickets at economy rate of 3.25 did gambhir get the award for because hes the captain of the team what sort of mathematics is this

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 14:58 GMT)

SRH - thinks bowlers can win matches. So not even single good batsman selected in this season from India. Forget foreign players they all are good. Remaining players not even played good local/ranji/under18/national/ games. Very very poor batting team selection, on what basis these players are selected - without any records under their name? and on what basis these players are retained? GOK.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 14:57 GMT)

To much pressure on Sanga coz of some waste Indian Talent. White is sent on the top to Slog, he just wasted the power play. Perera is the Only decent player in the team other are just a waste specially that Over rated Steyn, who is good only with the tale.

Posted by Greatest_Game on (April 14, 2013, 14:54 GMT)

@ abcdef_12345 must be feeling a little stupid for posting this - the very first post on this thread!

"Due to Gambhir's blind respect, Kallis is being picked again and again despite dismal performance."

Way to go! I guess you don't know your cricket abc's, do you?

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 14, 2013, 14:49 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks:Sangakkara's role is to be the anchor not the hitter??? ok then ask him to at least do that properly.. And if a t20 player cannot change his batting style according to the situation then how he can be a t20 player? See Rahul Dravid, he has completely changed his batting style according to t20. we have lack of local players and we even dont have players who can score 20 runs consistently, at least Parthav Patel is doing that ( I am not saying he is playing well) and white is at least playing well and could be a dangerous player, and Parera is also doing justice to his role. Like how Kings XI thrown Sanga out, soon SRH will do that, but before its too late.. do it quickly..

Posted by arvind.Kejriwal.AAP_A_Better_INDIA_ on (April 14, 2013, 14:46 GMT)

Sanga no doubt is a Great Batsman bue he is a mediocre T-20 batsman. He is not keeping the wickets either. Sanga's role apart from Captaincy is to anchor the innings but the problem with SRH is they don't have quality Ind batsmen, so situation demands Sanga to score quickly which obviously he can't as he is not a power-hitter. And he seems to be in poor form too. SRH think-tank better give a chance to someone like de Kock (in-form guy) and White can captain the side. Once Shikhar Dhawan returns, their batting side will get much needed balance.

Posted by Greatest_Game on (April 14, 2013, 14:45 GMT)

@ Surlycynic. Kallis WAS the Man of the Match! We don't need some award to tell us! I can't see any rational person actually believing that Gambhir did more, and Gauti himself would for sure agree. But then again, look at the headline of this match report.

Posted by THE_MIZ on (April 14, 2013, 14:39 GMT)

@ ballonbat, the way MOM is decided is actually the best performance by an indian...the same thing happens to steyn whenever SH win. he will bowl 4 overs for next to nothing, pick up wickets but the award goes to Amit mishra? Kallis deserved it today

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

BRUTALANALYST, is Darren Sammy under contract yet at Sunrisers???

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 14:33 GMT)

SRH team has been awful with the bat this season, in 4 of 5 games they have score below 135 runs!!! That is pathetic, every team should be able to average min of 140 runs. Even in the game where they scored 160 runs, that innings was propelled by white & perera hitting huge boundaries in the middle overs. SRH have been awful in opening power plays, scoring below 7 an over. Sanga, patel, vihari, akshanth reddy have strike below 100! Saving grace have been the bowlers who have done well to restrict teams & defend totals below 130 runs. I think it is time to evaluate dropping sanga & giving a chance to either quinton de kock or darren sammy. In recent ramslam t20 quinton score 524 runs in 11 matches at 145.55 strike rate!! Sanga has only made 84 runs in 5 matches at 95.45! Please SRH management, dont give preferential treatment, do what is best for the team to win games. White can lead the team & they need to stop bowling vihari in 2nd over, that gayle wicket was a fluke.

Posted by P06935 on (April 14, 2013, 14:32 GMT)

Well done KKR!!..well dne Gambhir, Kallis and Morgan!..keep it going guys..we can win it again!

Posted by diri on (April 14, 2013, 14:29 GMT)

Can some one please explain to me how Kallis was not named man of the match?????? not only did he score runs at 150 strike rate but he also took 3 wickest for a few runs. He is 2 players in 1....the greatest cricketer of the last twenty years

Posted by big_lake on (April 14, 2013, 14:24 GMT)

This is my first comment ever. I registered just to show my indignation at Kallis not winning man of the match. A few days ago Dale Steyn was robbed from this title. I agree with SurlyCynic that they need to change the title to Indian player of the match.

Posted by ballonbat on (April 14, 2013, 14:23 GMT)

What is it about Kallis that no one notices his performances? Is he just taken for granted? Comes in first drop and opens the bowling, performs exceptionally in both roles and your headline reads 'Gambhir, Morgan set up big win for Kolkata.' How about 'Gambhir and Morgan help Kallis win it for Kolkata'.

They should rename the team KKKR because of the gigantic role Kallis plays in their victories. You folk only ever comment on his performances when he fails.

Posted by ballonbat on (April 14, 2013, 14:19 GMT)

What on earth? MoM goes to Gambhir? Surely Kallis with 40 at a much higher strike rate and 3 wickets (including both openers) for 13 made him a shoe-in. If not him then Morgan would be my second choice - he scored 6 runs less than Gambhir at nearly twice the strike rate. How on earth do they decide these things? Is it simply a matter of most runs scored = Mom? Ridiculous.

Posted by eclipster on (April 14, 2013, 14:19 GMT)

Sammy won a WORLD CUP guys and I donno y you would prefer a failing Sangakkara. and please please please get rid of Parthiv patel. Dhawan is injured and I guess the rest of the Indian contingent is Hopeless. There is only much u can do with 4 overs from Steyn. We need a good auction next year. Hopefully SUN will get some quality Indian players (esp batsman). We won matches only bcos of bowling and if bowling fails this is what happens. May be get De Cock for white. Perera is a decent hitter in middle. We might need him. I am waiting for Chennai game so they can get rid of Sanga.

Posted by sussanki on (April 14, 2013, 14:15 GMT)

J.Kallis played really well today 41 runs just from 27 balls and 3 Wickets for 13 in four overs in T20 game which is pretty good job but man of the match was G Gambhir this was a stupid actions why Kallis or Kallis is not from India.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 14:13 GMT)

This is why kallis is a great guy to have most runs and best economy.. what a player..

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 14, 2013, 14:11 GMT)

How does Kallis not get man of the match? He took 3-13 in his 4 overs, including both openers and Perera. He made 41 runs at a strike rate of 150, yet Gambhir gets man of the match for only a few more runs at a slower rate!

They should change this award to Indian player of the match.

Posted by sanjaycrickfan on (April 14, 2013, 14:10 GMT)

Please remove Sangakkara from the team. He is not a T20 batsman at all. Replace him with Sammy and make him captain. Also remove Perera and give a chance to De Kock.

Shikhar Dhawan should come back when he gets fit.

Posted by Kohli--The_Messi_of_Cricket on (April 14, 2013, 14:08 GMT)

I hope Dhawan returns to the team soon. He should take over the captaincy and open the innings with de Kock. Now it's upto the SRH management to sack Sangakkara as it is unlikely he will sit out of the remaining games by himself.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 14:07 GMT)

All these people who are calling for Sanga's head, remember !! SRH won those 3 matches due to the BRILLIANT CAPTAINCY of SANGA !!! His role is to be the anchor not the hitter. When Players like White plays such slow games, Sanga is forced to go for big shots. With out Sanga, this team filled with mediocre Indian club cricketers will be humiliated on the field. Tnx to Sanga, they could at least avoid the humiliation. Sanga is the only thing keep these mediocre team together.

Posted by Angry_Bowler on (April 14, 2013, 14:05 GMT)

This is what SRH are up to, take away Steyn, they have no chance of winning a single game in this season, I would say their previous wins were gifts of their opponents. Now they are out of the play offs this season as well. Mark my words.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 14, 2013, 14:04 GMT)

SRH management should seriously think about Mr. Sangakkara and ask him to give a change to De Kock or Duminy or Sammy. i bet any person on bench will do better than Sanga. If SRH should perform well... then bring Shekhar Dhavan, Drop Sanga and bring any fellow on behalf of Mr Sanga.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 13:57 GMT)

Dhawan for Patel De Cock for Perrera so he can open with Dhawan and keep, Sammy for Sanga gives destructive end to first innings or chase also better leader and bowls, White and Steyn as standard maybe Perrera over White if White starts to fail.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 13:53 GMT)

Sammy should replace Sanga as captain DeCock should replace Perrera so he can take Patel's place as opener keeper and a better Indian batsman should come into the side to replace Patel only then would SRH maybe have a chance against the big guys.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 14, 2013, 13:49 GMT)

I told many times that Sanga is a useless player in t20 for batting and also captaining as well. Here there are huge fans of Sanga and they backup Mr Sanga even he gets out for a duck for 10 innings. If captain gets out under presser for just 3 balls then how he can handle the team? how he can take out the pressure from the team? He doesn't know how to change the bowlers also. 1st he failed giving Vihari to open the bowl with Dale. Pressure should be from both ends then only Dale can do something. KV Sharma was bowling well and he got only 2 overs. Mr. Sanga should realise that he became a big burden on the team, and should give change to either De Kock or Duminy or Sammy..

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

@BRUTALANALYST ; Sanga is a weak link ???? What are you talking about ??? White n other mediocre Indian club cricketers like Patel are the ones who are useless coz they don't do what they are supposed to do. Sanga is supposed to build the innings. Ppl like White are supposed to go for big shots from the get go. Now here they try to do the Sanga's job n put pressure on Sanga n ask Sanga to be the slogger. That opening pair Patel guy n White caused SRH to lose the game. Get rid of Patel BOY n White. Bring De Kock in. Sanga should take the gloves as well.

Posted by priceless1 on (April 14, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

SRH should drop both Sanga and Perera , Sanga is not suitable for this format and Sammy or McCullam are a good all rounders than Perera

Posted by Kohli--The_Messi_of_Cricket on (April 14, 2013, 13:25 GMT)

Sangakkara is a waste of an overseas player's slot. Can't understand his tactics either. Karan Sharma makes the breakthrough and bowls two brilliant overs, but guess what? Sanga gives the ball to his SL buddy Thisara Perera who gets clobbered to all parts of the ground.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 13:22 GMT)

Sanga has really become a weak link and he's not even keeping the keeper Patel is also the other visible weak link in this SRH side, IMO Darren Sammy the world cup winning captain would be much better selection as he's a way more dangerous batsman and has experience bowling under pressure in the international arena.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 13:18 GMT)

Pls get rid of this Patel guy n White. Utterly useless. The target is 180 n both of 'em wasted whole power play n put the pressure on the middle order.Pathetic !!! As a result of that Sanga went for shots under pressure n got out. . White didn't wanna go for lofted shots when there were fielding restrictions but later went on to play big shots n got out. What a useless player. Pls Bring De Kock in place of White. Sanga should take the gloves n also open with De Kock. My god.....

Martin Ford I posted this before the match.Look at his previous records in last 3 years' IPL.After this all round performance, he will play all remaining matches regardless of performance.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 12:32 GMT)

@abcdef_12345, 41 from 27 (SR 151) and sacrificing his wicket on the last ball of the innings for a chance at an extra run is a dismal performance?

Posted by TUPZ on (April 14, 2013, 12:26 GMT)

KKR is the only team in IPL to have players of the ICC associated country namely E Morgan(Ireland) & Ryan ten Doschete(Netherland). Keep it up!!!!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 11:24 GMT)

Really disappointing not getting to see McCulum play this IPL I guess it's cos he will be leaving for England and they don't want to disrupt the team balance ? real shame cos he's one of the best to watch and has been in incredible form for NZ v England in the short stuff.

Posted by British_North_America on (April 14, 2013, 10:32 GMT)

Due to Gambhir's blind respect, Kallis is being picked again and again despite dismal performance.
