Big Picture

Pune Warriors' campaign is in need of a tonic - they lost three of their first four matches - but they are now in Chennai, which means the tonic is placed on the highest shelf. Chennai Super Kings, the big boys of the IPL, are perhaps the hardest team to beat in their home conditions and they reconfirmed it last night by snaffling a last-ball win against a strong Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The inclusion of Aaron Finch briefly kindled hope as Warriors recorded their first win of the season, against Rajasthan Royals, but a pedestrian outing in Mumbai pulled them back to the familiar zone of mediocrity. Finch was bowled first ball by a Mitchell Johnson bolt and the rest of the batting crumbled without much resistance. Angelo Mathews, the Warriors' new captain, had also appeared listless with his use of bowlers against Mumbai Indians. He removed Bhuvneshwar Kumar from the attack after an impressive first over, allowing Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting to get away, then let Ashok Dinda, who bowled the most expensive spell in the IPL, finish his full quota though there were options still available. The camera often panned to a lost Mathews, and sometimes to Steven Smith, who had been the spark of Warriors' 2012 campaign, in the dugout.

However, Mathews won't be available in Chennai and in his absence, Ross Taylor will lead the side. Yuvraj Singh, is unlikely to take the field*.

On the other hand, Super Kings, after giving Mumbai Indians a scare in the first match, continue to live up to their reputation. They demolished Kings XI Punjab and left Royal Challengers in a confused state. In Chennai, where the crowd gets behind them, there isn't anything they are incapable of doing.

Form guide

Pune Warriors: LWLL

Watch out for

Suresh Raina, the IPL's leading run-scorer, has played two innings and is yet to hit a six. That is at odds with the ease at which he has racked up almost a century of sixes in the tournament, making him the second-most prolific six-hitting machine behind Chris Gayle. Warriors have an attack made up of medium pacers and spinners who bring the ball into the left-hander - an ideal recipe for Raina's favourite hoick over midwicket.

Rahul Sharma, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, will have the task of reining in a big-hitting batting line up if Yuvraj Singh is not available to play. Rahul has managed to keep his economy under six while others have been taken for plenty and he is the leading wicket-taker for the team. Bhuvneshwar has troubled batsmen whenever he has found swing early in the innings and in absence of any real pace in the bowling attack, he will have the responsibility of striking early.

Stats and trivia

  • Warriors' head-to-head record against Super Kings reads similar to their current campaign - one win and three losses. They are yet to win in Chennai.
  • Since Warriors' inception, Robin Uthappa has been their leading batsman with 751 runs. But in the same period, 16 other batsmen have scored more runs than him.
  • Raina has the most number of catches as a fielder - 43, the same as Rohit Sharma

"I do not think there is any reason for us to panic, we have got a very good side with us and we just need to get a few wins under our belt and then take on the momentum from there"
Pune Warriors' allrounder Mitchell Marsh

"I had a cricketing chat with him and he told me that the most important thing while batting is your mental strength and the ability to read the bowler' mind. He said it's all about how you feel on that particular day the moment you put your jersey on."
Suresh Raina reveals the advice he received from Brian Lara recently

Pune Warriors can be a better team if they drop non-performing Manish Pandey and play Parvez Rasool. Rasool is a good off spinner, and a decent batsman. If he can bowl something like Rahul Sharma, he can justify his place. Plus his batting will be a bonus.

Posted by SLMaster on (April 15, 2013, 14:58 GMT)

It is not Mathews problem and Pune is loosing. All of them are average in batting.

Posted by Prabakaran_Pownraj on (April 15, 2013, 14:36 GMT)

@Viiki619 - I think R.Ashwin, M.Vijay and S.Badri are from TN... Before these three i hardly remember any TN player playin for India... From all the IPL teams only CSK have given some good contribution to our national side...

Posted by Deepak-Tarava on (April 15, 2013, 14:17 GMT)

It is good for Warriors to keep away Mathews. I don't think he deserves a place in the playing XI

Posted by Ansh_indian on (April 15, 2013, 14:08 GMT)

for me Pune Team should be

Wright,Flinch,Uttapa,Yuvi,Smith,Rasool,Samuel/Marsh,Suman,Rahul,Ishwar Pandey,Kumar don't want useless Nayar,Dinda,both r gud for Domestic Cricket only.

Posted by Darkmanx12155 on (April 15, 2013, 14:04 GMT)

for punes sake lead the team from the front ross.... and who ever replace mattews, please do well so that mattews can warm the bench and pune can win matches....

Posted by KK_Cricket on (April 15, 2013, 13:43 GMT)

Pune's think tank's ability and captaincy is really questionable. A Nayar doesn't bowl a single over although is supposed to be one of the better Indian all rounders in the competition and was bought for a huge sum.. Rasool doesn't get any matches and they persist with Dinda and B Kumar and either of the two doesn't bowl their full quota.. What's the point in playing Dinda and Kumar then? Instead, if you want to play Marsh, get him to bowl his full 4 overs and pick Rasool by dropping/rotating Dinda/Kumar.. Nayar/Rasool can be sent in at 3 as pinch hitter as well if Pune loses wicket early.. Smith has to replace Taylor as Taylor is in really bad form and you cannot pick a player based on past performances...

Angelo mathews is a good captain.problems i nobody in good form. common PWI.....!!!!

Posted by Viiki619 on (April 15, 2013, 13:41 GMT)

@Prabakaran_Pownraj u mean locals like jakati, manpreet goni, saha,Tyagi???name some uncapped TN players playing more than 10 matches for this team??

Posted by aarvindarasu on (April 15, 2013, 13:39 GMT)

CSK is one of the most formidable teams in the league.Has the best combinations around, squad seems balanced and overflowing always with experience, quality and ability.Role model to all other IPL franchises.

On the other hand Pune has been the most contrary to them, seem like an aggregated bunch of over-rated and co-ordination lacking players who sadly do not stand much to gain in the league and must seriously work multi-folds if they aim for a Qualifying slot.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 13:31 GMT)

@Nike_007 Read Raina's comments and you might think otherwise about CSK. Also, CSK started with all local talent and made them into internationals.. Only Raina, Dhoni, Hayden and Murali were internationals at that time. We had Vijay, Badrinath, Ashwin, Sudeep Tyagi as newcomers who were given many chances.

Its just that many local talent just didnt click (some I might add are talented but havent been given the chance) for other teams.

Posted by Winsome on (April 15, 2013, 13:29 GMT)

Why do people want Marlon Samuels in their team? In 10 matches for Pune, his strike rate is under 100. Having him and Ross Taylor batting one after the other is a recipe for disaster as they only fire about once every six times.

Posted by Prabakaran_Pownraj on (April 15, 2013, 13:08 GMT)

@Nike_007 - CSK is the only team which served the purpose of IPL by giving chances to local players and groomed them in to international standards... Yeah everyone had given chances to their local players (except MI) but none succeed in bringing the best out of them and gave any useful contribution to our national side.

I dont find any flaw in retaining the same set of players whom they have developed... Cos ultimately every teams goal was to win the trophy and CSK had done tht with some philosophy and style...

so rather dan complaining just admire the way this club has been running by cricketing minds...

Posted by Virajbekal on (April 15, 2013, 12:49 GMT)

I really dont Understand the reason for Paying such a big price for Abhishek Nayar if he is not used as an Allrounder.... He is also batting way below in the batting order....He should be used as an All rounder, reduce one bowler and take another Batsman or Mitun Manhas or Parvelz Rasool(He should get a chance for all the promise he has shown)....Sometimes I feel there is no logic in selection of players during auction....One such case being Glen Maxwell.... :))))

and 13th match against RR,B kumar was given by 15runs for 20th over.but dnda was given by only 4runs for 19th over.that is the reason mathews was given to ball to dinda.

Posted by mukugamer on (April 15, 2013, 12:36 GMT)

im supporting for csk but the mjor loss for us is albie morkel however players like bravo and morris could make up for it i wish csk win

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 12:24 GMT)

mathews is not a bad captain.he is a good captain.he gave to dinda final chance to show dinda was a good bowler.but he didnt is a good doors are closed for dinda sadly.its time to give a chance to richardson.and marsh is useless player.

Posted by Nike_007 on (April 15, 2013, 12:13 GMT)

Supporting PWI for this match because this team along with SRH, RR and KXIP are serving the purpose of IPL.

Anybody remembers, IPL was started to promote young talent and to give them chance to play with international players. Teams like CSK and MI are playing with 10 international players at a time.

Look at RR, they are giving chances to almost every young face and that's the reason RR has given many new faces to Indian team while other have not.

The best team to be for pune warriors are: Robin Uttapa,Aaron Finch, Luke Wright, Marlon Samuels, Ross Taylor, Yuraj Sing, Bhuneshwar Kumar, Mithun/Suman,Nayar, Rahul Sharma and Pervez Rasool.

Posted by gnanzcupid on (April 15, 2013, 11:51 GMT)

Most of lankans but for malinga, sanga(hoping he fires in later part of this tournament) and mahela are high priced bad purchases for the franchises. Franchises should not spend their cash in useless purchases. Instead the domestic talent can be groomed using the same amount of bugs.

Posted by paawanchamps on (April 15, 2013, 11:44 GMT)

pune warriors on paper are one of the best teams, the problem with them is problem of plenty Ross Taylor is not at all in good form he shud be out i dont understand the role of mitchelll marsh he is not utilized at all .. neither he bowls full quota of overs and bats at no. 7 or 8 and pune plays bits n pieces cricketers who can bowl and bat rather they shud play specialist. where the hell is kane richardson look at their depth bowling awfully bad they are playing 11- luke wright uthapa yuvi samuels mathews nayar rasool b,kumar richardson r.sharma and t.suman

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 11:43 GMT)

There is no need for the PWI to panic. In times of crisis the team should hold themselves stronger and the captain should lead the way. I feel its entirely wrong to blame Mathews for performance since nobody is performing. Although definitely his captaincy was shaky. I feel he should hold the team together, make them gain confidence, do the leader stuff and lead from the front. And with the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Samuels in the team, they can/will rise very fast. All the best.

Posted by dina on (April 15, 2013, 11:39 GMT)

Parvez Rasool should get the opputunity today.

Posted by kaushalbv on (April 15, 2013, 11:26 GMT)

Steve Smith coming in for Matthews today?

Posted by MySayOnThIs on (April 15, 2013, 11:21 GMT)

PWI feel some shame for urself.. change ur captain than its very late... pick the following team u have a better side than many others ..

1- ROBIN UTHAPA. 2- LUKE WRIGHT. 3- ROSS TAYLOR. 4- Yuvraj Singh. 5= Smith 6=T Suman. 7- AM Nayar 8=Richardson 9=bhubaneshwar kumar 10=Rahul sharma 11= Parvez Rasool.

Posted by AKS286 on (April 15, 2013, 11:20 GMT)

Fellas Albie is injured and Mitch Marsh should bat at 4. he is usefull bowler but at middle & opening overs.

Posted by Charu1983 on (April 15, 2013, 11:17 GMT)

PW should play following XI: 1. AJ Finch, 2. RV Uthappa, 3.Steve Smith, 4. T Suman 5. Ross Taylor 6. AM Nayar, 7. Eklavya Diwedi 8. Parvez Rasool, 9. Rahul sharma, 10. KW Richardson, 11. B Kumar

Playing 2 specialist spinners (Rahul n Parvez) would be good in chennai conditions... with Richarson getting an opportunity it will strengthen the Bowling line up against Mighty Middle order of CSK...

Important for PW is top 3 should take the team atleast to half way mark (either cotribute half way for chasing or be at crease for atleast 10 overs if defending)

Playing Eklavya Diwedi will add a batsman to line up making Steve smith and Abhisheikh Nayar to share attack fr quota of 2 overs each...

This is the best wht PW can do... Mitchel Marsh should make way for Richardson in my opinion

Posted by AKS286 on (April 15, 2013, 11:16 GMT)

Pune team hope is Yuvraj Singh only he can provide answers to Chaennai bowling & a squib from taylor is needed which can set up a big target. So a little bit of expensive bowling don't bother Pune team.

@thinkgood, How poor your eyesight? Before making fun of CI description, you should have open your eye and see the picture, where both Raina and ABD looking towards straight boundary. The photo must be taken in the previous editions since Arun Karthik is the one keeping for RCB now, in last season ABD kept wickets. So this must be from 2012 or 2011 and it might be a Six at long on. Yeah it was taken at May 24, 2011. I m not sure the link will work but try.;page=1

This was the commendatory for the same shot by CI.

9.6 Vettori to Raina, SIX, slog-sweep, this was coming as Raina has been tied down and has been itching to hit. This was quick but in his swinging arc, and he gave it his all, clearing wide long-on with ease

Really. pune are struggling a lot in this sesdion of ipl. They are not able to produce good results inspite ofj having class players

Posted by Bharathjaz on (April 15, 2013, 10:56 GMT)

Am a Fan of csk, we need to use the service of young baba, wondering y dhoni showing lack of interest on him.apart from that csk looks formidable with morris and bravo. we have to use faf when he available for selection in the place of hussey.he can able to bring the trophy as alone to us. srj needs to play for csk like he played for tuskers two season before.. for pwi perspective they have to utilize Kane Richardson, a very good depth bowler, we can see him in aussie's color soon.

Posted by Sunman81 on (April 15, 2013, 10:08 GMT)

PWI is in this state mainly due to its bizzare team selection... Not playing Steve Smith, playing Marsh as a lower order batsment...not utilizing the service of allrounders like Parnell, Samuels... not playing some good indian prospects like Parveez Rasool have all been quite bizzare and peculiar...hope they get it right this time and pick their squad right... SL selectors will be worried seeing Matthews captaincy in this IPL... hope he gets a good break to learn from his mistakes..

Posted by rasiramesh on (April 15, 2013, 10:06 GMT)

CSK today should today play with the below playing XI:

1)M Vijay 2)B Aparajith 3)S Raina 4)S Badrinath 5)D Bravo 6)MS Dhoni 7)R Jadeja 8)Albie Morkel 9)Chris Morris 10)R Ashwin 11)D Nannes.

So that there would be an 10 Men Batting Line-up including Ashwin and 7 men bowling line up with 4 Seamers (Nannes - Left Fast, Chris - Right Fast Medium, Albie & D Bravo -Right Medium Fast) and 3 Spinners (R Ashwin & B Aparajith - Off Spin & R Jadeja - Left Arm Spin). Raina also bowls Off Spin as a part timer. So it would be a 8 men bowling line-up.

Hussey should be rested, though he had played well in KXIP, in RCB match he was out of sorts hitting only 6 runs in 16 balls. So that would solve the problem whether to choose Albie or Chris.

B Aparajith should be given a chance by opening along with Vijay.

So the CSK side will be very powerful with bat and the ball. If CSK in 1st Six overs get atleast 40 runs they will definitely post a total of 180 and above with power hitters down the order.

1. AJ Finch, 2. RV Uthappa, 3. LJ Wright, 4. Yuvraj Singh 5. Ross Taylor 6. AM Nayar, 7. Parvez Rasool, 8. Rahul sharma, 9. KW Richardson, 10. B Kumar 11. AB Dinda,

good side but don't replace rahul sharma as he is bowling well

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 9:48 GMT)

Parvez Rasool is a good bet,Hope he will get a chance today!!!

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 9:38 GMT)

why the people are giving so much important to Bhuvneshwar Kumar.People have seen him bowling against Rahul Dravid who is not a big T20 player but still manage to score quick runs against him.

Posted by Ramansilva on (April 15, 2013, 9:37 GMT)

Mathews is showing that he is not even suitable to lead a temporary league team. He is no match for Dhoni. So he won't be missed. It is the opportunity for someone else to show that he can do better than Mathews.

Posted by binu.emiliya on (April 15, 2013, 9:32 GMT)

Like Abhinav Mukundu and Suryakumar yadav,Ali Murtaza is also an unlucky player sitting in the bench all the match. He is a good lower order allrounder.During the ICL he was a very valuable player

Posted by ooper_cut on (April 15, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

The photo and this caption "Coming soon at a ground near you: Suresh Raina's slog-sweep" is something special. It will take Raina's own bad shot to prevent him from plundering these bowlers.

Posted by satishchandar on (April 15, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

@SC13159 : I dont think CSK need to worry that much about the backups.. They got Faf to open for some good period now.. They got good set of Indian players(Raina, MSD, Badri, Ashwin whom they should retain next auction too) who will carry on atleast for 4-6 years.. And you will have new talents coming up in future as replacements.. Wit the kind of the players CSK opts for, you can expect a very good work ethical cricketer in the team.. Look at Morris.. What a pick he looks to be..

My team : luke wright , uthappa , taylor , steve smith , yuvraj , marsh , i.pandey , b.kumar , rahul sharma , nayar

Posted by Tapash on (April 15, 2013, 9:24 GMT)

Dinda is a dangerous player in the team for Pune. I don't see any scope for Pune if he is in the squad today. I don't understand reason of inclusion Ross Taylor when Luke Wright is available to select. Pune must choose a bowler who can bowl slightly better then Dinda.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 9:18 GMT)

I think Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel need to be brought into the side today and give Hussey and Bravo a rest to recuperate. Chennai looks to be a great pitch for batting and neither Hussey nor Bravo have got the runs this season so far. Last season, Faf was great with his opening for Chennai and Morkel smoked Kohli for 24 in an over to set up victory for CSK. They should be included today. They will only add to the CSK's strength

Posted by Cricros on (April 15, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

No side should keep S Smith & L Wright on bench..Pick them first and then rest of overseas players..

Posted by Stevros3 on (April 15, 2013, 9:09 GMT)

I think it's time to give Luke Wright a go especially with Matthews out, one of England's key T20 batsman along with scoring the fastest century in the last Big Bash competition in Australia, and a useful bowler with some great variations giving him a reputation as a great death bowler in limited over games. Worth giving a match or two to see if he can turn things around for Pune.

Now that M Hussey's retired from internationals he will not be in prime form for the future editions of the IPL and we need a replacement. Hope CSK pick Morgan in the auction. As for today's match, don't take Pune lightly. They have good players and if few of them click as they did against RR, they can upset any team. Who will be in CSK playing XI? Morris or Albie, we will wait and see.

The best things to happen in this match for pune is the absence of angelo. He is not even looking like fit enough to make into the eleven, but it is a misfortune that he is a captain. Changing the poor captain can turn it around for pune.

For Pune Aron Finch,Uthappa,Suman,Manish/Yuvi,Ross Taylor,Steave Smith,Mitch Marsh,Parvesh Rasool,B Kumar,Iswar Pandey,Rahul Sharma i think this will be an ideal combination in Chennai, there are two spinners one legbraek and one offspinner and try Iswar pandey instead of Dinda.Happy to see Chennai and Mumbai are trying Rajput,Mohith Sharma and Rishi Dhawan in the previous matches while KXIP is not giving chance to Sandeep Sharma,Pune is benching Iswar & Rasool. These players are leading scores in Indian domestics matches

Posted by jimbond on (April 15, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

Tamil Nadu politicians may have done a great service to Pune. They have forced a change in captaincy of Pune- which may actually help them. It could also enable them to play Smith instead of Mathews- which is going to strengthen the team. Mathews' captaincy in IPL is a warning signal for SL. After being led by masters such as Ranatunga and Mahela, they are struggling with a set of mediocre captains.

Posted by phunny_game on (April 15, 2013, 7:58 GMT)

@ThiknkaK: well since you asked, Mithun manhas is not a regular WK... Even uthappa is not a regular WK for his state, but he is cleaner behind the stumps than Manhas, and Samuels is not fit right now. So u got a couple wrong mate :)

Posted by phunny_game on (April 15, 2013, 7:46 GMT)

I know its hard for mathews and his fans, but his captaincy has not been upto the mark, just like his batting... Although i missed the first match of PWI, i haven't seen Nayar bowling in the other matches... Mathews has a lot of options but he can't utilize them properly... Otherwise i don't find any reason why a team having Yuvraj, Samuels, Wright, Smith, Taylor, Uthappa can not win a tournament, forget winning two matches on the trot. I feel bad for Luke Wright. But he surely is better pick for any T20 side than finch, plus he can open also...

To be honest, PWI is really a gud T20 side (on d ppr), it just their bizarre selection that handing dem failures. They have Wright, Smith, Richardson (new buy) warming d bench's. Making someone like Matthews a captain is another wrong'un amidst so mny, as he just cant b able to justify his place in d XI. Now after losing 3 of 4, there should be some serious n logical thinking while choosing d XI hereafter. For that matter, even Matthews, if needed, should step down as a captain. Talking abt today's game, Rasool - a right arm offie must be included to take care of lefties f d CSK. Also Ishwar shud have a go, replacing Dinda. I'm not asking to keep Dinda out on d basis of MI game, bt hez spraying d ball all over right frm d start dis season. He needs to go to d basics n try in d nets for a while. My overseas picks for dis match - Wright, Smith, Finch/Samuels n Taylor. Rossy's appointed as a leader for dis game, else I'd gone for both Finch n Samuels instead f Rossy. C'mon Warriors, You need to fight n triumph !

Posted by Triplek on (April 15, 2013, 7:17 GMT)

Pune should bring in Wright and Smith in place of Matthews and Marsh. Smith/Wright are regular players for their countries and should always be the first choice.. Utappa, Finch, Yuvraj, Wright, Taylor/Samuels, Smith, Nayar...

Posted by satishchandar on (April 15, 2013, 7:15 GMT)

Wright must play given his sublime form in T20 WC and also in BBL/BPL.. Smith, well for his fielding.. He can still be better than Rossco(though he might prove me wrong anytime).. My 4 overseas will be, Finch, Wright, Mitch and Smith/Ross..

Luke Wright, Steven Smith, Samuels don't get to play while Ross Taylor who has been extremely ordinary and riding on just a handful of innings that's noteworthy is incredibly annoying.. Wright and Smith are in the forms of their lives.. Taylor is very highly overrated.. @Paiudupi this is too much of being too positive...After watching all four games only a miracle can make Pune Warriors a winner at Chennai...that too against chennai..

uthappa , finch, luke wright, yuvraj singh, steven smith, mitchell marsh, bhuvaneshwar kumar, dinda , rahul sharma , nhayar and rasool

Something is missing in CSK .This season they r looking vulnerable.Barring the heroics of MSD,Sir RJ,Hussey ,Morris etc. and a lil bit of luck they r not looking there shadow best of previous versions .Pune has to get in Steven Smith if they want leave a mark this IPL.The difference in bowling gives CSK an edge over PWI.My bet on CSK.Expect a good innings from M Vijay and Morris.

better to give chance for smith and yuvi should be captian..........

today pune give tough competition to csk

Posted by Winsome on (April 15, 2013, 6:17 GMT)

Pune seems to have a team of players who consider themselves sheet anchors regardless of how they play outside the IPL. Uthappa plays a proper T20 innings once in a blue moon. All of their supposedly big buys just seem to stuff around. Ross Taylor's international T20 strike rate is excellent but his IPL strike rate after all this time is not anything flash nor is Samuels much of a hitter in this tournament. Pune won't get anywhere without proper hitters up the order.

Raina has so many records in IPL... Will he keep his IPL records this season too ???

The only thing pune worrior missing is dada. hope he will accompany the current team with his losing experience.

get luke wright at no 3...dinda out...make taylor captain..pune have a chance...!!

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 5:32 GMT)

CSK should try with Anirudha instead of Badrinath/Vijay, who is a hard hitting batsmen. Also, if Albie is recovered he can be replaced with Bravo. Bravo is a very good all rounder, but Albie is a terrific all rounder.

My 11 : Hussey,Vijay, Raina,Anirudha, Dhoni,Jadeja, Albie, Morris, Ashwin,Nannes, Rajpoot/Aparajith

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 5:23 GMT)

love to see smith coming in for mathews and luke wright in for out of form taylor. and smith should lead the side as he has the experince as a captain and had a sucess ful campaing for sydney sixers in der triumph to maiden bbl title..pune has the immense talent but wt they lack is the right captain leading from the front...smith could be the x-factor for pune...hope smith and luke gets a chance tonight... my playing XI uttapa, finch, wright,uv,suman, smith, nayar, mitchell, buvi, dinda,r.l sharma

Until steven smith come to pune side , they will definetly loose every single game. so management of pune team should decide whether they want a win or simply defeat. use potential of smith please

Posted by tristen_kul on (April 15, 2013, 4:55 GMT)

Ross Taylor should be the captain. That's what I think anyway. Matthews was doing a bad thing against Mumbai. Finch was the best bowler, and he only bowled 2! M Marsh was good too. But, he gave Dinda the ball. Seriously?

Posted by Nmiduna on (April 15, 2013, 4:40 GMT)

nobody here thinks maybe its touch unfair to blame mathews on the failures?..yes he may screwed up his bowling plan in one match, but apart from that, its been their batters mainly not living up to their huge reputations in t20. if you see, mathews bowled economical spells in all matches he played. he didn't quite fire with bat. but who did? one match he was left stranded in non-strikers end, in another he got a ball what was desctibed by many as the ball of the ipl. i'll be happy for warriors if they win tomrrow, but that will threaten the place of mathews. it will be a pity because i think he still can do a lot for this team, if others back him better. Anyway hope for at least a close game, its with CSK, so it'll give also give a hint to the speculation whether IPL is a two tier tournament.

Records meant to be broken. So, in Chennai, the home ground for CSK, today is the day CSK will definitely be beaten by Warriors. Watch the miracle. NO WAY, this time CSK will even NOT be qualified for Semi Finals. Sure.

Posted by aries_d on (April 15, 2013, 4:26 GMT)

From the form and the team, CSK will win today's match. But in T20, it depends on the match day how things go. Would give 80% to CSK. With Mathews out of the team, Smith can come in and Yuvraj should be the captain

Posted by msankar on (April 15, 2013, 4:25 GMT)

Somehow I feel, the current condition at tamilnadu gives good opportunity to PW. It allows PW to drop Mathews and give opportunity to the talented foreign players who are waiting for chances.

Pune Warrior's will be Stronger in Chennai, Since they won't be playing Angelo.. Watchout CSK...

Pune Warriors should try new set of players and as well as change the batting line up. They should play Samuels and Smith in Chennai. Team Pune: Finch, Uttappa, Samuels, Yuvraj, Smith, Nayar, Suman, B.Kumar, R.Sharma, A.Thomas, S.Wagh. and Chennai Should go unchanged. Give Albie more time to get match fit and he can replaced Nannes after few matches but not Morris. Morris is the Bowler to watch in this IPL.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 2:57 GMT)

pune warriors should do some experiment any how they r lossing , they should bring kane Richardson, Wright, marsh, and finch and their batting order shoulld be like this 1,suman,finch,wright,youraj,uthappa, marsh, nayar, bhuvaneshwar, rahul sharma, richardson, dinda uthappa have some knocks in middle order and agood hitter

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 2:56 GMT)

Albie plz comeback..Iknow u r injured but plz comeback and hit the opponents wit ur Dashing sixes..Morris is Superbbbbbb..

Posted by satishchandar on (April 15, 2013, 2:29 GMT)

CSK should continue with Morris.. It lends them the perfect balance of the overseas players.. One pure batsman, one pure bowler, one batting all rounder in Bravi and a bowling all rounder in Morris.. Mind guys Morris is not a mug with bat too.. Can strike as good as any one on his day though not of Albie's caliber..

Pune should look for inspiration from somewhere.. Got some very good talents but they lack something which would lead them to win more than not. Really tough to find what that factor is.. Is it coach or captain or mental fitness?

When everything fails. Dhoni's luck will survive him ;-)

Posted by TRAM on (April 15, 2013, 0:02 GMT)

Big hitter and all rounder Albie should come in place of MHussey who scores 6 of 16 balls ! That way, Morris who is doing good can be retained. Albie (my preference) or Raina or RJ can open with MVijay to keep the left/right combo.

With Albie the other bowler in, I want all rounder Aparajith in place of MSharma, that way we encourage the U19 champion (twice MoM in QF & SF) and also have additional off spin option (considering lefties Yuvraj, ANayar in the opposition).

TN Local talents are not favored by Dhoni as seen over the years (remember he was holding on to Parthiv Patel as opener for long instead of giving chance to MVijay). If such treatment continues for Aparajith, he needs to move to other teams following the paths of LBalaji, DKarthik, MKarthik, AMukund, Sathish, etc

CSK , watever may b the result of any matches in league, will be the winners this time. More than any season, they are much hungrier this time and its obvious on the players attitude. NO STOPPING CSK . GO KINGS

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 23:31 GMT)

Thanks to Chennai we will be at our strongest tonight with Angelo not there! Finally we will have our strongest team with Stevie playing. WE MUST PLAY STEVEN SMITH, FINCH, MARSH & ROSCO

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 21:16 GMT)

Smith is desperately needed by the Warriors

Posted by usernames on (April 14, 2013, 21:09 GMT)

I think by making an overseas player the captain, teams are shooting themselves in the foot. If the player isn't performing well, he should leave, whether Indian or overseas. The big problem is the 4 overseas player limit which effectively becomes 3 when you have an overseas captain.

I don't think any team apart from Delhi benefits from an overseas captain. Sangakkarra is blocking the spot of, perhaps, de Kock; Matthews of, perhaps, Wright; Ponting of, perhaps, Maxwell or Smith. For all the leadership skills they bring, I still don't like the tradeoff.

For Pune, though Yuvraj isn't such a good captain, he could be the right person to lead the team.

Posted by ARad on (April 14, 2013, 21:05 GMT)

It is a good idea for CSK to continue to play Morris since he bowls faster than Albie. CSK does have a deep batting line up so there is no need to change the current winning XI. This would also mean that Albie would be hungrier if he comes in as a replacement.

Posted by usernames on (April 14, 2013, 21:04 GMT)

For Pune, I think they have the right personnel but they don't play the right XI all the time. I don't think they are going to defeat CSK in Chennai.

My team would be: Uthappa, Finch, Wright, Steve Smith, Nayar, Yuvraj, Marsh, Bhuvi, Rasool, Sharma , Ishwar Pandey.

Dinda is useless -- on his day, he is poor. If it's not his day, he's so terrible that I have no adjectives. In a T20 league, for a team as fickle as PWI, he doesn't figure in my bowling attack.

This team bats deep and there are a lot of bowling options. Bhuvi and Pandey being your main seamers with Wright, Marsh, and Nayar a helping hand. Rasool and Sharma are your main spinners with Yuvraj and Smith a helping hand. Plenty of options all around and you can rotate the bowling as you like.

There is enough firepower in the top with Finch, Uthappa, and Wright, and then enough firepower at the bottom, too, with Yuvraj, Marsh, et al. Nayar and Smith can help hold the innings together in the middle overs.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 20:53 GMT)

Samuels in for out of form Taylor , Wright in for Mathews

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 20:19 GMT)

no matthews or mendis cos the match will be in chennai.... its the batting that has let this side down.... ross taylor hasnt been in nick so far... a big innings from him and the game can be won.... i dont think its mathews who is responsible for PWI's losses... its more to do with their performance with the bat... their bowling allround has been alright... its the batting that has let them down throughout.... The only change will probably Steve Smith for Mathews...

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 19:25 GMT)

mayb ross wil be da captain ......nd samuels would be com in fr mat........

Posted by Angry_Bowler on (April 14, 2013, 19:13 GMT)

Expecting another defeat for PWI as usual, unless something extraordinary effort from them and a off day for CSK, which is highly unlikely given the form they are in now I in particularly Sir Ravindra Jadeja.

Posted by naureensajwani on (April 14, 2013, 19:10 GMT)

Pune team : 1.Robin Uthappa 2.Finch 3.Luke Wright 4.Suman 5.Yuvraj 6.Smith/Marsh 7. Nayar 8. Kumar 9. Sharma 10. Dinda 11. Mendis

Posted by loki897 on (April 14, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

what happen to days of Yuvraj being captain? It would be better for the team that way.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 19:06 GMT)

No Mathews in Chennai,So u have to mention it in this preview

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 14, 2013, 18:45 GMT)

Well, now all of us can see if its Angelo Davis Mathews' fault or something else caused PWI to have a bad start, as Mathews won't be playing in Chennai tomorrow. So the ppl who put the blame on Mathews, pray that PWI will win tomorrow. :))

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 14, 2013, 18:40 GMT)

Bring in Albie for Morris and then that batting lineup is even more fearsome! CSK are a great team.

Posted by shsachdev on (April 14, 2013, 18:38 GMT)

There will be no Angelo Matthews, which I feel will actually benefit the Pune Warriors.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 18:30 GMT)

Go raina still waiting for ur hundred

Posted by CaliforniaMysterySpinner on (April 14, 2013, 18:23 GMT)

Poor captaincy by Angelo Matthews and poor team selection by the Pune think thank. Robin Uthappa is failing miserably and needs to be dropped, joining other 1M plus bech warmers such as Surabh Tiwary and Glen Maxwell. This while their most consistent and best player from last season, Steve Smith, and England's #3, and a much seeked T20 specialist all over the world, Luke Wright, sits out. Their XI should be

1. Manish Pandey/Robin Uthappa 2. Luke Wright 3. Ross Taylor 4. Yuvraj Singh 5.Steve Smith 6. Nayar/Wagh 7. Parveez Rassol 8. B. Kumar 9. Rahul Sharma 10.Dinda/Wagh 11. Ajantha Mendis

No mention of who the Warrior's captain would be. Has any official announcement been made yet? Maybe Yuvraj?
