Shikhar Dhawan, the Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman, is back in India after having spent time with family in Melbourne, and expects to take the field in the IPL "very soon", once he gets clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore. Tom Moody, the Sunrisers coach, tweeted, "we are hopeful it's within the next 10 days."

Dhawan has missed the first two weeks of the IPL as he's recovering from a fracture he suffered on his hand during the Mohali Test against Australia last month. The game was his debut Test and he shot to fame with a dominating 187, the fastest by a debutant in Test history. Dhawan was ruled out for six weeks after sustaining the injury.

"Hopefully I will be able to take the field soon. After this trip [to Australia], I just have to get the clearance from NCA," Dhawan told ESPNcricinfo. How soon will that be? "Soon, very soon," he added, with a smile.

Dhawan had been tipped for success early in his career but had to wait many years to get an opportunity at the highest level. His ODI debut three years ago was forgettable. However, even with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir having already cemented their place at the top of India's batting order at the time, especially in Tests, Dhawan never gave up hope of breaking into the side.

"I never thought that way," he said. "I love playing cricket so I was enjoying playing the game whether I played for Delhi or North Zone or even in the IPL, for that matter. All I told myself was I should keep on performing and my chance will come.

"By the grace of God, I got my chance and I could make it count. Even when it comes to [playing for] India, I got a chance [in ODIs] three years ago, so there was no way for me to let my hope fade. And I would think Gautam bhai and Viru bhai have been legends of Indian cricket. They have played for so long. [I thought] if I get an opportunity, I will also make it big."

Dhawan's sensational Test debut has also earned him a new nickname, Gabbar, based on a famous character in Sholay, one of Hindi cinema's biggest blockbusters. "We keep playing pranks on the field and, once, I asked a team-mate, "kitne wicket bache hain, Thakur (How many wickets left, Thakur)", so the nickname has stuck since then."

Dhawan preferred to focus on the present but has an eye on the Champions Trophy later this year in England, an opportunity for him to improve his ODI record. He played down India's biggest challenge of the year, the tour of South Africa, where India have never won a Test series. The presence of Dale Steyn in the Sunrisers camp could be an opportunity for Dhawan to learn a thing or two about Steyn's bowling.

The IPL, however, is not a homework exercise for Dhawan in preparation for the South Africa tour. "When I am playing the IPL, I would like to give my best for the franchise and not think much about anything else. Obviously the South Africa tour is a big tour. Once we get closer to it, we will start preparing accordingly. At the moment, I just want to focus on the IPL."

Dhawan spoke to ESPNcricinfo at the launch of a new range of watches by Tag Heuer

Eager to see you open for SRH. You should help SRH win the IPL 2013. You are no doubt set to be a great batsman for India.

Posted by   on (April 19, 2013, 6:47 GMT)

failure in 5 matches can't be big problem while team is winning regularly. Let them play more matches and know them each other well. It will improve winning spirit. In t20 any thing can be happened. last year same team played and lost most of the matches like DD this year. This year they started it nicely even without Dhawan, previous top scorer for DC bt still more matches to be played to qualify for semi. Give more match practices to same 11....... Hope to see both RR an SRH among 4 at the end of league........

Replacing Sanga is foolishness. As per his batting records says he lifts the score and doesn't stay in the wicket. Captaincy is all around performance also up-to the mark of led the team even its a loose or win we can measure. Im seeing most of people who does comment based on seeing the batting. We cant complaint only through batting on surface, pressure & attack from the opponents. Sammy cannot be a captain when it come to World class player among which has to consider effective communication and create team work.

Sanga and White remain in the position and rest to be altered according to their weakness. Parthiv has to perform else Sanga to place wicket keeping and it may bring a new player in the team. Parthiv has some poor shot selection instead of good skills in batting.

India has exciting batting talent - there is S. Dhawan,Pujara, Kholi,Karthik, R. Sharma, A Rahane, Vijay - there are others as well. But for me these stand out. Shiktar did very well in that Oz test. Our bowling cupboard is not that richly endowed.

I cannot wait for dhawan to return, he is the only noteworthy indian talent on this team, akshanth reddy has sone aggressiveness but he doesnt last long, patel is not a big hitter & only indian batsmen to have good SR is ashish reddy. I hope SRH management pounce and pay heavy price to get an indian batsmen of some quality in auction as the bowling lineup of steyn, ishant & mishra is good. Im looking forward to the games in chennai as I want to see how sammy & de kock will do. Like gilchrist, sanga being captain makes it hard to drop him for several games even if its in teams best interest. In 4 of 5 games this team has struggled to post score of 135!!!

Also dhawan should use chris jericho music for his entrance. SAVE US SHIKAR DHAWAN!!!

First thing, SRH needs couple of quick changes: Mr Moody and Owners needs to think about this.

1. Drop sanga and replace with Sammy (Captain/All rounder/Match winner) 2. Drop White and replace with De Cock (As a opener).

And for the rest of the scrap we can't do anything until Dhawan arrival.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 17:02 GMT)

Sanga needs to perform with his bat, and why is he not keeping wickets? I am sure he is much better than Partiv!! and Perera - not every ball is hit on the leg side.. Please drop him too.. what happened to Duminy? he can bat/bowl/field with much more consistency.. when is he back?? I would want to see De kock why is he not given a chance?

Moody, please dont keep playing with the line up.. settle for one line up and stick to it.. do your homework, stop experimenting on the day!!

@Zahran Fouzi: Last year stats::: For white scored- 479 Runs, @149 Strike Rate with the average of 43+. And Legend(?) Mr. Sanga has scored 200 Runs, @108 strike rate, with the average of 18. This year stats are also White has better figures in all aspects compared to Mr. Sanga who never put impact with his bat in a T20 match. He is a TEST Player and NOT t20 at all and you are backing him?? LOL because of him the entire team is under pressure. Better to replace him with De Cock or Sammy or Duminy. Duminy has average of 83 with strike rate 128 last year and he is on bench because of Mr. Sangakkara. SRH Management should seriously think to replace Sanga with someone. I am desperately waiting SRH playing in Chennai because Sanga cannot play there( Sad to loose Parera at the same time).

Posted by ravi2047 on (April 16, 2013, 10:02 GMT)

Darren Sammy in for Sanga and as a captain. Come on! How could the management not make Sammy the captain? He is the captain of the defending champions of WT20! De Kock in for White.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 7:20 GMT)

dhavans presence is a must .Also sammy will make a difference.parthiv patel needs play a long innings to be more effective. In these formats we need batsmen who are consitently put up more than 120 strike rate. 100% strike Rate want be good at all. kesav koundinya

Thanks to Pune for the best performance with Indian captain"s team

Posted by jcdill on (April 15, 2013, 19:07 GMT)

i would rather like sanga, ashish reddy and parthiv patel to be dropped from this team, and have 3 other faces who can peform more.it is gd to know that dhawan is bck for sunrisers colours.and hope this team will do well in forthcoming matches.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 18:19 GMT)

Dear Mr. Sangakkara, if you have any concern for Sun Risers Hyderabad, please step down and give chance to Quiinton De Cock. We need Dhawan very desperately. He's a must in the line up.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 15, 2013, 16:26 GMT)

As well as Dhawan We want Sammy ! After the birth of his child he must be on a real high SRH need to get him in the side asap to finish overs like Pollard or to help chase down big targets, his bowling fielding and whole hearted presence is needed Sanga needs to sit out.

Posted by Nampally on (April 15, 2013, 13:33 GMT)

@screamingeagle: SRH has foreign players like Sanga & Perera who are not contributing. Why not put big names who can contribute to the team on the field instead of decorating the bench with such names as Srikant & Laxman. We want to see some good batsmen playing in the team which is lacking in batting. Steyn is one Foreign player who is world class. Get at least one consistent batsman of the calibre of Gayle or Kohli or AB de velliers. Srikant did not do much when he was a selector. But both Srikant & VVS were magical in batting when they played for India. Get guys of their calibre in the side!

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 12:58 GMT)

my team for next two matches is 1.parthiv 2.akashth reddy 3.vihari - top order 4.white 5.sammy 6.perera 7.ashis reddy 8.samntry(or any hitter) - middle order 9.steyn 10.amit mishra 11.ishanth mishra - bowlers

if dhawan comes drop vihari. let the top order play themself for 6-8overs. they have to try nd score around 45-60) then comes middle order take 4overs time then bang jst bang the ball. white, perera, sammy, ashis reddy 4of them can hit very hardly. they must plan and move accordlingly to it upto dhawan comes when dhawan comes change the plan nd execute it. we have 5international experinced bowlers - steyn, ishanth, sammy, mishra, perera

we had a back up bowler ashish reddy too. steyn nd ishanth to open the bowling steyn -1,3 overs perera - 5 over ishanth - 2,4,6 nd the remaining overs according to situation

Posted by Naushad79 on (April 15, 2013, 12:08 GMT)

My side for SRH would be 1. Dhawan (open) 2. T Perera (Open with Shawan quick runs) 3. Sanga(Anchor) 4. P. Patel 5. D. Sammy(Targetting final overs) 6. A. Reddy 7. A, Mishra 8. K. Sharma 9. D. Styne 10. 11. Ishan Sharma

above team can give u 5 good batsmen, 4 reasonable batsmen, 7 bowling options

Batsman (Dhawan, Perera, Sanga, Patel, Sammy) Can Bat (Reddy, Mishara. Sharma, Styne) Bowlers (Styne, Ishan, Mishra, Sharma, Sammy, A. Reddy) Par-time bowlers (Dhawan, Perera)

but SRH need to have some quality Indian players to balance the side (like kohli, sharma, raheni, ect)

Posted by RAJESRH on (April 15, 2013, 10:00 GMT)

MY TEAM 4 NEXT 2 MATCHES 1.Quinton de Cock-L, 2.Akshat Reddy-R, 3.Parthiv Patel(wk) -L, 4.White(C), 5.Darren Sammy-R, 6. Tishara Perera-L, 7. Sachin Rana-R, 8. Ashish Reddy-R, 9.Amit Mishra -R, 10.Anand Rajan, 11.Ishant Sharma.

Posted by RAJESRH on (April 15, 2013, 9:55 GMT)

THANK GOD! I wish him to play from CSK match on 25th. TEAM - UNTIL HIS ARRIVAL . 1.de cock, 2.Parthiv Patel (wk) 3.akshat reddy, 4.white (C), 5.perera, 6.Darren Sammy, 7.Sachin Rana/ Karam Sharma, 8.Ashish Reddy, 9.Amit Mishra, 10. Anand Rajan, 11.Ishant Sharma. 4 Batsmen+ 4 Allrounders + 3 Bowlers. Give rest to STEYN for 2 matches. After 2 matches if DHAWAN came (in the place of PERERA vs CSK)+ the better in the above + STEYN will play remaining matches. Take Spin/ Fast bowling All rounders according to the pitch. No spin bowling in first 6overs.

Posted by kevepere on (April 15, 2013, 9:03 GMT)

Since its less likely sanga and white would be dropped . The best team that SRH could put are 1. Akshath Reddy (cause of best average and gud s/r for an indian) 2. Sanga (play the anchor role) 3. Dhawan 4. White 5. Patel 6. Perera 7. Vihari/AA Reddy 8. Mishra 9. Steyn 10. K.Sharma 11. Sharma.

Posted by Sunman81 on (April 15, 2013, 8:59 GMT)

It would be a good idea if Sanga follows the same strategy adopted by Daniel Vettori in the previous IPL by sitting out for a match despite being a captain... Players like De Knock and Sammy should be tried at the earliest... Dhawan opening with De knock would give the much needed impetus to the SRH fragile batting order...

Posted by Pathiyal on (April 15, 2013, 8:56 GMT)

they need a superman quite badly. hope shikhar dhawan can repair the damages to a certain extent :-) take some burden off cameroon white. till now, he seems to be the only performer for sunrisers.

Posted by Pinarsh255 on (April 15, 2013, 8:21 GMT)

He should time his return wisely. No doubt SRH need him. The overseas player are only performing with the bat. Parthiv is scoring run-a-ball 19/20 runs. He is also dropping few crucial catches. He dropped Mahea, did not prove costly though. They need someone to score at a pace at the top of the order. With Steyn, Perera, Ishant, MIshra they have a pretty balanced attack. Dhawan will give them a much needed boost. If he is not fit, then make a bold call and give some young player a chance in place of Parthiv.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 8:16 GMT)

Even with the Inclusion of Dhawan, there will be no difference to this SRH team, up-to now they won matches only coz of Sanga's captaincy other-vice its should be 5-0.......by the way when Gilly won the title for DC there were some awesome players like. Gibbs,Symonds,Afridi,Sharma etc and now don't expect the Sanga to win like him with a some schoolboys........if anyone disproves me PLZ note that Under Sanga's Captaincy SL team reached W.C finals, T20 W.C finals, Asia Cup finals, Best ranking in test SL ever had.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 7:43 GMT)

Sunrisers need you badly!!!!

Posted by screamingeagle on (April 15, 2013, 6:53 GMT)

@Nampally - Having Srikant and Laxman in the mngt does not mean that all players start making big runs. There is this small thing called ability and presence of mind.

Posted by yorkslanka on (April 15, 2013, 6:21 GMT)

To all the people blaming Sanga, yes he is not in good form with the bat but you forget, he is there as a CAPTAIN.. His skills in this area are contributing more than anything else. As I see it, the problem with SRH as wit a lot of IPL teams is that there are very few Indian players who are up to the standard. I don't mean those who are playing at the top level, I mean those coming through.once the overseas players get out there is no support from there on and the team crumbles...

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 15, 2013, 6:09 GMT)

Dhavan, SRH need you badly. Come on and give a blast victories.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 5:11 GMT)

dhawan you are the key of the sunrisers batting. come fast and open the doors for sunrisers to win the contest

Posted by abi111 on (April 15, 2013, 4:20 GMT)

if sangakkara was in any other team he would not have played more than 2 matches ,so srh will be better dropping him and making white as captain and open with dekok

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 3:34 GMT)

i didn't think i would be excited of an idea that an indian batsmen is rejoining his team. But it happens this time. SRH badly needs betsmen who's going to sit out. Sanga is out of form. Parthiv is not an excellent keeper and not a big hitter as well. dilemma!!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 14, 2013, 23:36 GMT)

Dhawan and Sammy will be a huge boost to Sunrisers they can still be dark horse of IPL ! hope they make the playoffs

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on (April 14, 2013, 21:42 GMT)

SRH badly need Dhawan. They also need an overseas player to replace Sanga.

Posted by Nampally on (April 14, 2013, 21:34 GMT)

Without Dhawan, the SunRisers' batting has neither head nor body. He carried the team last year when guys like Sanga failed. This year Sanga is failing again in batting but there is no Dhawan to make the team look competitive. The Foreign players are supposed to be contributing. Where is their production in batting? At the top there are guys like Srikanth,& Laxman as Mentors and a Pakistani fast bowler as the coach. It is better to have more action on the field than the big names on the bench! Even if Dhawan returns there is no assurance of big scores since he has been out of Cricket for nearly 2 months.

Posted by   on (April 14, 2013, 20:36 GMT)

Does he really need to play IPL and get injured again ?

Posted by riseupSRH on (April 14, 2013, 20:08 GMT)

dude! u have no idea of how badly Sunrisers Hyderbad are in need of you :D

No Rush, take your own time - perfectly fit is what you need to be both for now and for the SA tour.... all the best + get well soon, I would like to see many more of those 187s ! ! !

Posted by Porky_PigTheToon on (April 14, 2013, 19:20 GMT)

aaiiyeeeee ! This Delhi lad is needed badly in SRH team to give much important strength to their weak batting line-up. And not to mention, he is an excellent fielder too just like Kohli. Looking forward to see him bat.
