Aaron Finch hits out, Chennai Super Kings v Pune Warriors, IPL, Pune, April 15, 2013

They keep saying you have got to do the basics right, more so in Twenty20. They lie. On Monday night in Chennai, Pune Warriors did most of the basics wrong against the much-fancied Chennai Super Kings, but still won by a huge margin.

While batting only two of the seven Warriors batsmen went at a strike-rate of more than 112.5, and one of them faced 18 dots out of 45. They wasted a flying start - their best in all IPLs - with a muddle in the middle, Mitchell Marsh holed out into the deep and didn't even cross over, Manish Pandey slogged when he should have handed over the strike to Steven Smith, T Suman dropped a sitter that would have reduced Chennai Super Kings to 2 for 2, and they were consistently on the worse side of minor fielding errors.

Still, riding on Aaron Finch's 67 off 45 and Steven Smith's unbeaten 39 off 16, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's impeccable swing at the top of the defence, Warriors pulled off the upset. Their basics might not have been perfect, but there was enough of the spectacular from the three aforementioned gentlemen.

The first ball Finch faced he drilled back past Dirk Nannes for four. He would hit seven more fours in the Powerplay. With a short back lift and a punch packed behind them. Robin Uthappa at the other end, though, fumbled his way to nine off 12 at the end of the Powerplay. The singles didn't come, Uthappa kept struggling, but Finch kept hitting enough boundaries to take this stand to the best opening for Warriors ever.

Then came on R Ashwin's spin and Chris Morris' bustle, and Warriors lost their way. In going from 96 for 0 to 128 for 4, they consumed 29 balls and looked set for a below-par total, especially after the 18th over produced just three runs. However, Smith, who wouldn't even have played but for the Tamil Nadu government's problem with Sri Lankan cricketers, had other ideas. He went crazy against Nannes and Dwayne Bravo, reverse-flicking the latter for a huge six over third man in the final over. Twenty-eight came off those last two overs, but this was still a strictly fighting total.

Under Bhuvneshwar's swing, the total grew a leg. With his second delivery, he trapped S Anirudha - who replaced Michael Hussey - with an inswinger. He looked like he could get Suresh Raina with each of the remaining deliveries of that wicket-maiden. Catches kept getting dropped, the fielding was not the sharpest, but Bhuvneshwar nipped out Raina soon.

Abhishek Nayar's cutters and Rahul Sharma's accuracy did the job in the middle overs, and once again Super Kings were left with close to 14 an over to chase through MS Dhoni, Bravo and Albie Morkel. It wasn't to be this time as the bowlers and fielders held their nerve.

Dhoni always talk about CSK's weak bowling attack, here the question is "Does he ever try to strengthen his bowling attack"; NO... CSK never looked trying seriously to buy Good Indian fast bowlers in the auction & focus on purchasing the batsmen and bit&pieces allrounders. Dhoni always loads CSK with too many batsmen in the playing 11, in the last match 8 proven batsmen + 2 bowling allrounders. If he really want to strengthen his bowling attack then play hilfenhaus in place of Morris. Morris has got wickets but in the later overs. Hilfenhaus is one who can get you 2 wickets in the first powerplay overs. Simple question for Dhoni "What he like to do, Chasing 170 with 8 batsmen + 2 bowling allrounders or chasing 150 with 8 batsmen + 1 bowling allrounder?"

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 1:23 GMT)

What a farce with CSK's opponents not being allowed to select their own team; a good way of avoiding Malinga etc! Why not go further and make them bat or bowl with their "wrong arm" They should be kicked out of the tournament ; if I was running one of the other teams I would DEMAND to select my own siderather tha bow down and weaken it and if this was not granted claim the match by default. Stop pussyfooting about!

csk will start winning after 1. MVijay plays with courage . 2. Mvijay plays straight instead of crossbat shots. 3. Both openers hit out right upfront - again, no cross bat shots. How can a player (MVijay) with so much T20 experience with 2 centuries (!) play with such timidity at the start of the innings? Unbelievable. Somebody tell him the spelling of "courage" and "confidence".

Give break to Vijay and bring aparajit, drop Braivo and bring Hussey. See the changes.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 15:29 GMT)

CSK is playing with 8 batsmen + 2 bowling allrounders & still they have been very very very extra cautious in the opening overs throughout their last 4 matches. Its more than a crime to have a slow start when u have such a big batting lineup; u should start thrashing the bowlers from the second or maximum 3rd over. If a team loaded with 10 batsmen allows bowlers like dinda, bhuvneshwar, nayar & mitchell marsh to bowl economically (6.5 runs per over) then it means the team is lacking intensity, courage, brain, quality, ability, class, strategy, form & .........

Posted by crindex on (April 16, 2013, 10:05 GMT)

Its not a good idea to drop Vijay or Hussey combinmation at the top order for CSK. Openers need more time to get adjusted and Vijay surely needs more time. So Vijay and Huss should continue and Albie should be dropped from XI. Aniruddha can come in place of Raina and can solidify the middle. Raina is not doing any good getting out at the most inappropriate times. We need more local boys firing in IPL.

Posted by ladycricfan on (April 16, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

@Venkiwaran, in the match against RCB, Kohli was out , given not out, Vijay was not out , given out. Those two decisions would've made huge impact to the game. Who was lucky here? It was just outcome that CSK won. Justice was served in the end.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 9:07 GMT)

I THINK Nannes should b left out bring in hilfenhaus and Hussey back for Morkel.Jakarti deserves a go too!

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 9:00 GMT)

@ Sidhart; I could be wrong, but you sound pro CSK. All due respect; PWI put up an amazing, spirited performance never seen under the helm of Mathews. This said, it was the application that Taylor made throughout the entire fielding session, bowler rotation, persistence with Nayar, belief in Dinda (though I do not think he deserves to be in the playing XI) and the pressure he put on the CSK top order. Even Dhoni ironically seemed to succumb to it yesterday. Never thought that 160 odd would be difficult in home conditions for CSK. PWI need to twik the playing XI and sure will be a team to beat in this IPL for sure.

Posted by Venkiwaran on (April 16, 2013, 8:35 GMT)

CSK is the most hyped team in IPL. If not for RP's magnanimous no ball in the RC game, this team will be languishing at the bottom of the table. Well played PWI. Dhoni's hits and miss kinda cricket or Jadeja's unscientific slogs will not get this team anywhere. Wherever is Baba Aparjit? Looks like he hasn't caught Dhoni's eye yet and maybe never will.

Posted by crindex on (April 16, 2013, 8:20 GMT)

CSK needs to buckle up and get going beyond this defeat. Its going to get tougher and tougher to beat teams in IP this season.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

I think the way PWI scored in the powerplay is the key to their success.Full credit to Finch,Smith and particularly Bhuvaneshwar. Regarding CSK,they think that they may score any asking rates with their powerful batting line up.Unfortunately their batting seems to be a boring to watch until Dhoni and Jadeja comes in.Top order consumes a lot and leave more to do in the final 5 to 6 overs. Vijay don't know how to pace this T20 innings. Raina yet to click and Bravo appears to be good in paper, it all becomes only the Dhoni-Jadeja show. They should justify their selection always.Even though they win against RCB by luck, they have to really work hard in containing runs in the power play and in the end overs. Badrinath succumbed identically while going for the loft shots. Regarding batting they have to shake off the over confidence and reshuffle their batting order. Dhoni has to be more innovative in his captaincy and should remember that luck can not win cup

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 16, 2013, 7:52 GMT)

As usual all credit is being given to foreigners for this victory, that spell from bhuvaneshwar kumar made all the difference as the total was not beyond CSK. But no credit will ever be given to young Indian cricketers they will only be blames for losses.

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 16, 2013, 7:50 GMT)

Said earlier as well, throw out overrated players from sri lanka nad you'll win your matches. Hope mathew don't come back now.

Posted by mjrvasu on (April 16, 2013, 7:44 GMT)

CSK very clearly gave the impression of being jaded. They need to buck up real quick, or find themselves out of reckoning for the semifinals.

Posted by Niju_001 on (April 16, 2013, 7:42 GMT)

CSK is always like this, they are trying various combinations and gaining experience by trying out various situations. They want to identify their strengths and weakness and build a good combination towards the second half of IPL. They have done this before and succeeded. This time too its no different they need back ups to their key players so that they dont struggle later in the tournament if they happen to lose any due to dates/injury. They will finish within top four once again from there its a different story.

Posted by EdGreen on (April 16, 2013, 7:41 GMT)

Looks as though Finch and Smith got the basics right - can't understand Smith's ommission from earlier games - not the greatest test player - but a stunning fielder and a fine striker of a cricket ball.

Posted by NagarjunReddy on (April 16, 2013, 7:35 GMT)

Hi Guys VGM. i think they have purchased overseas players based on their potential and their strength. But still they have not given chance to some players. they should give chance to Luke wright. instead of Ross. why Ross playing i dont understand. he is Good BatsMan, but now Man is not in form. instead of Dinda they can give chance to some one. like Rasool.if they will play then only they should be in XI other wise they should sit. in 3 Matches 127 runs for Finch and one wkt and some good catches, smith also have done excellent job. both got chance because of some players injured/missed. other wise they will not find the Place in XI. they should use Bhuvi all overs in first spell itself, you can expect wkt orless runs in dead overs. 1.Finch 2.Luke wright 3.smith 4. yuvi 5. Samules/Mathews 6. robin utappa 7.Nayar 8. rasool 9. Bhuvi 10. iswar pandy 11. rahul sharma. To be Frank Mathews is not Doing Good Captaincy. better to give to some one. Ross done good job yesterday.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 7:12 GMT)

CSK needs to send morkel higher up in the batting order If they need to win matches. Current batting order of CSK is suitable only for 50 overs cricket.

Posted by nitz19arg on (April 16, 2013, 7:11 GMT)

Pune have done it brilliantly. It proves that to win matches in IPL, one does not need star players, only consistency throughout the match. Finch and Smith were fantastic making the most of every opportunity they got. And Ross taylor captained brilliantly by intelligent bowling changes and always keeping CSK on their toes. CSK did it wrong, they can't rely on MSD and raina to finish every time. I would love to see Pune winning more matches and be the contender for 4th place. Also want to see more of this freaky lad Steven Smith. He brings sooo much energy on the field.

Posted by baskvijay on (April 16, 2013, 6:59 GMT)

CSK should play to their strengths. If they know ,their no 5,6,7 are good finishers give them a moderate runrate to chase. If 2 wickets fall with in 6 overs it doesnt mean batsman has to go in shell, CSK hardly make use of PP. Scoring just a touch over 6 RPO till 10 overs, leaving 12-15 RPO in the last 8, will not work always.CSK strength is they bat deep, even if they can reach 85-4 in 10 overs , they still can chase 160 odd runs, with out much chaos. Dhoni has to come at no 5 and not to let the match go till the very end and try to catch up from there. From my view I see Dhoni let the game go way too far by his defensive shots and then come up big when the match is almost over. what ever WE STILL LOVE CSK

Posted by ladycricfan on (April 16, 2013, 6:43 GMT)

It is better to have bad games earlier rather than later. Go CSK. We all know your fighting spirit. PWI match was the one at the right time to wake up the sleeping lions. Play with CSK spirit and fight till the end. CSK always.

PWI Were Miles Ahead Of CSK In Quality On The Night...They Deserve This Win..Hope CSK Bounces Back..

Posted by Paiudupi on (April 16, 2013, 6:22 GMT)

Thank you Warriors, for your great spirit. You deserve to win it, as you started the batting on high profile, good opening stand. The beginning was quite excellent, and the score should have been 180 Plus. Anyway, you defended this score and won it without any problem. Yesterday, before the match, I wrote that " Today is the day of Warriors, wait and see guys, some big miracle will happen and CSK will be beaten by Warriors, without doubt ". My opinion and comments come true now. Even, CSK would have lost against RCB too, if it not a NO BALL of last ball. So, CSK is not strong enough in this IPL. CSK will not even qualify for Semi Final this time. Wait and see.

Morris is superb..he is genuine wickettaker..csk have got a gud buy tis season...but bravo's batting is worring a little bit.wen wil be FAF Du plesis be available..he shouldhave been here..

Posted by sameer_warun on (April 16, 2013, 5:55 GMT)

CSK badly missing Kulasekara, he can swing the ball in front, late he can yoke, he's bating is much better than morise.

Posted by TRAM on (April 16, 2013, 5:50 GMT)

CSK will continue to struggle if they are going to persist with people like M Vijay and Badrinath. They hardly make a big contribution and that is simply not enough for such a format. Vijay has been like this in all seasons and it sure why nothing has been done about it. He should be made sit out for a few games.

Posted by Ramansilva on (April 16, 2013, 5:27 GMT)

This match showed someone else can do better than Mathews. Exposure of the inadequacy of Mathews will open the eyes of SL selectors.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 5:24 GMT)

First I must tell that Smith should be a part of the team. however, Pune wants good strike bowler such as Malinga or Jhonson for Mumbai. In chennai they used Nayar its ok but if they do not get wickets up front who is gping to control the run rate. though I am a sri lankan I don't think Mendis can do it. they should have a good quality bowler in their line up.

Posted by AmolManave on (April 16, 2013, 5:15 GMT)

Good to see PWI beating CSK at Chennai. But PWI is not at all Balanced side. Ross taylor has to make way for Anjelo Mathews and Yuvi has to replace manish pandey as soon as possible. T suman is not in his form, Pavej rasool is the best choice instead of suman, he has shown good form in domestic as an All rounder. Its risky to make Marsh and Nayar bowl 6-8 overs in a match. Parvej rasool will be handy in both ways.

Posted by cric_gates on (April 16, 2013, 5:11 GMT)

Pune did some right moves and results were good in front of everyone.... 1. Played S Smith and see how impacted he was. 2. Captaincy of Ross Tailor. He is much better captain than Angelos. 3. Using NAyar as a bowler. It gives an option if 1 of your bowler has off day. 4. Bowling Bhuwnwshwer 3 overs front in helpful condition.

In upcoming matches, Pune should play Ishwar Pandey or Parvez rasool. They are really good addition to the squad and it will sad to see if both not given chance.Yuvraj adition in the next match will boost the team.

Posted by pjaison on (April 16, 2013, 5:07 GMT)

Complacency was the word right from the time Dhoni announced the squad. M.Hussey replaced by Anirudh and Morkel given a match where he dint even bowl a ball. The overconfidence was visible in their body language right from the first over. Dirk was laughing even after being hit for consecutive fours. I thought CSK wanted to chase a big target so as to give their fans an interesting game.As predicted by Dhoni during the toss, the pitch had slowed down towards the end and the ball was not at all coming on to the bat and I guess was a major reason for the loss. I am a CSK fan and I am not disappointed as I know that CSK will get into the semis even if they loose the next three matches. All who are happy that CSK lost yesterday will be in awe .... as Dhoni will have the last laugh.... ONE MORE TIME !!!

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 5:07 GMT)

Why cant you replace nannes for morkel, instead of using a bowler u can go for an all rounder

Posted by binojusjp on (April 16, 2013, 5:03 GMT)

Being as a Sri Lankan, I ' m not going to say Pune need Mathews for their every games. I don't see any problem about his captaincy. But he needs to contribute to the team with the bat. It is clear that Both Finch And Smith should take a part of the team. I think if Yovi can take the responsibility of the middle order they can drop one foreign batsman (Probably mash) and think about Mendis who is a very good bowler in this format.

Anyway pleasure to see chennai loosing matches.

Posted by kp.vasant on (April 16, 2013, 5:02 GMT)

Where are the CSK fan's who were whsitlepodu etc etc? Folks understand that having a batting line up which bats deep need not always win you every match! just like everyone keeps claiming that RCB is one man show, i believe CSK is too is over dependent on Dhoni. "Sir Ravindra Jadeja" is not consistent, Vijay though makes the shots look easy has not shown the required consistency. Badrinath even though is consistent in scoring 20-40 runs, but never looks like winning a match on his own. Albie is coming off an injury and bravo hits couple of balls out of the park but eventually holes out. The match you won against RCB was just CSK's good luck and RCB bad luck. And that doesn't happen every time you play.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 4:57 GMT)

Chennai should not drop Hussey. They should include one more specialist spinner to break partnership or at least restrict the run rate.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 4:53 GMT)

what a match, iam csk fan but what n innings by steve smith, and that chennai ground looks so nice , enjoying ipl. poor shot slection cost csk the game./

Posted by Mahaanama on (April 16, 2013, 4:50 GMT)

Inclusion of Smith was the only difference not Mathews's exclusion. Smith should have been played for all games instead of Marsh. Mathews didn't bat well in this season but he bowled well. His allround performance always brings the balance to the team. I also believe captaincy should be given to someone else since Mathews can't be considered as a good captain. Marsh and Taylor also should be replaced eventhough Taylor is a good option for captaincy.

Posted by wizards_chatis on (April 16, 2013, 4:44 GMT)

Now pune realise how much important player is steve smith , he proved himself as a brilliant batsman and a outstanding fielders.

If pune wants to be in this competition they have to play with smith and keep mathews apart from the dressing room. Finch played a superb innings

Posted by KK_Cricket on (April 16, 2013, 4:32 GMT)

Even though Pune won, they were not were close to perfect or best.. They should have got to 180 after the start given by Finch.. And Uthappa should be spoken to by Donald and Captain..his batting was really poor and almost got Pune in trouble.. He is an aggressive player and should be looking to score quick runs..Pune need to bring more balance to the side and that can be done by dropping either Pandey/Suman and bringing in Rasool, who can bowl and bat aggressively lower down the order.. Ross Taylor has to make way for Matthews and finally, Richardson or Mendis should be brought in for Mitch Marsh against strong batting oppositions like Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.. Hope Pune doesn't go off guard from here and win 5 - 6 games out of next 7 - 8 games and make it to the Top 4..

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 16, 2013, 4:22 GMT)

@Tamil India I really like that order for CSK they're definitely under using Bravo and Dhoni with the bat leaving it way to late, better gettin them 4 5 for team and fans and then Morkel Jadeja and Morris as back up finishers. I mean who wouldn't want to see more of Bravo and Dhoni batting . . .

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 4:15 GMT)

Chennai is too over confident team... Most of their players think that either Dhoni or Albie or Bravo will come to their rescue, and they have come to their rescue most of the time but you can't expect them to chase 50 or 60 of the last 4 overs in every game... Anyways happy to see CSK lose.

Posted by anand_ on (April 16, 2013, 4:10 GMT)

I don't see Chennai making it to the last four this time they are just not sticking to their strengths. In previous seasons one of the major reasons for CSK's success was playing 3 spinners which helped MSD fasten the pace of the game and not giving the opponents any time to comeback. But this time they have messed up there combinations buy picking up to many seamers. Another major reason for CSK's downfall is Ashwin's bowling, he was successful in previous seasons because he wasn't afraid to toss it up to the batsmen in this format but all he does rite now is bowl at the batsmen's leg stump n make sure that he doesn't get hit.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 3:54 GMT)

change the batting line up. 1. aniruth 2.vijay 3. raina 4. bravo 5. dhoni 6.morkal 7. jadeja 8. morries 9. ashwin 10. nanees. and 11th player.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 3:36 GMT)

PWI at least now has 2 confirm overseas player, FInch and Smith. Taylor's captaincy was better than that of Angelo, rotated the bowler nicely. When Angelo comes back, they should drop Marsh and Manish Pandey and include Ishwar Pandey . They always had the individuals, all they needed to have a settled combination.

Posted by kevepere on (April 16, 2013, 3:20 GMT)

Some of these people are talking about under performing mathews. He has bowled well plus he was sent at number 7 first few games to bat. Telling that yuvraj is an added bonus when he is much worse in the current form is stupid. Great captaincy by Ross but if he cannot contribute with the bat then better to go with mathews. Plus the bowling would be much stronger.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 3:19 GMT)

You cant chase100 runs in 60 balls if u plan to score 50 runs in first 10 overs.Mr Dhoni pls change this strategy.everytime you cant win 50 from 20 balls...Chennai has been over confident that they have such a long batting line up and they can chase even 50 runs in 2 overs. They start every match very very very slow like 50 runs in 10 overs thinking slow start then pickup arrpoach yet they loose 2-3 wickets in that phase...Why cant atleast one batsmen out of 9 can go and score quickly???????? COMEON DHONI sir you have to change this idea..this is T20 and play such...

Posted by Lovetesh on (April 16, 2013, 2:42 GMT)

Good win for PWI. Like they dropped underperformer Samuels, they should keep Angelo Matthews out. Learn from RCB who dropped Vettori who was their captain to accommodate Murali. I think Luke Wright and Parnell should be given chance ahead of Matthews in case they need to change their foreign players.

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on (April 16, 2013, 2:28 GMT)

The absence of that Mathews guy made all the difference for PWI fortunes. For the next match, Ross goes out and Luke Wright comes in. No place for that Mathews guy if PWI wants to compete.

Posted by   on (April 16, 2013, 2:17 GMT)

This is not shocker or upset match, as expected CSK gone too experimental. Removed in-form hussey by replacing morkel, didnt giving up bowling to him, promoting jadeja to 3rd down order. Its better to push raina into middle order, good game from pune, esp., Aussie trios, steve smith had saved the game for Pune.

Posted by Bhooshan1234 on (April 16, 2013, 1:28 GMT)

It's a very commanding win for PWI, Unlikely to Mathews, Ross or anyone else can be better skipper and player for PWI team. Mathews is the biggest waste in this team and his skipping is the disaster. UV is anytime better option than Mathews. Come on UV take over this role. Congrats PWI

Posted by Ravs1504 on (April 16, 2013, 0:26 GMT)

PW needed this win..I do feel that matthew is not the best choice as captain for them. They should continue with Ross. On papers PWI looks good but when it comes to the performace they look so disjointed.. most of the matches they looked like playing wtihout the purpose.. a good leader provides that purpose..thats what gautam gambhir did to kkr....if you take dhoni out of csk, they might also start to look like a disjointed team.. you can have one man chaning the course of match in T20 but in any form of the game the captain role cannot be underestimated.. Matthew lacked proactive approach on the field. Giving dinda over after over was the big mistake and he continued with it during the match..He is a good allrounder but still a long way to become a leader..(with due respect to our srilankan fans)

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (April 15, 2013, 23:53 GMT)

Pune Warrior got lucky this time. They need to re-think their selection process. Manish Pandey has been a flop in all the matches PW has played this year. PW need to try Parvez Rasool. He is India's best off spinner. He can probably bowl as well as Rahul Sharma. Plus he is also a good middle order batsman.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 22:53 GMT)

i think four overseas players should be:finch,samules,smith/marsh mathues.pune can do better if he utilise his players's management is poor.

Posted by TNAmarkFromIndia on (April 15, 2013, 22:48 GMT)

Finch has played very well in two out of three innings. Pune will be looking to get a good start from his as often as they can. Uthappa failed again in the previous match and this time again played another slow innings. Ross Taylor hasn't been in great form either. I wish they brought in Luke Wright in place of him because he has become a pretty good T20 batsman, consistently scoring 20's-30's at a good pace. A top 3 consisting of Finch and Wright could be brilliant. Yuvi, Smith and Marsh could form a really solid middle order.

Posted by ladycricfan on (April 15, 2013, 22:45 GMT)

Pune finding the winning combination is good for the tournament. Wish them good luck. Vijay/Hussey partnership has been very successful for CSK and hope they will click soon. Raina is not his best yet. Bravo should bat high up the order. When captain cool Dhoni bats up the order he takes ones and twos leisurely and let the required run rate go up. Letting Smith score 39 off 16 balls was the main reason for today's loss.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 22:40 GMT)

Please SACK ANGELO. We need a captain who deserves his spot. Finch or Stevie are the long term options as Rosco is struggling and will leave at some point. Hand over the leadership to Stevie or Finch right now!!

Even though I wanted a CSK win, PWI was exceptional, given the number of misfields by them today. Nothing mattered. Extraordinary bowling effort, Rossi provided his critical presence and made his presence felt well by many. Hope PWI selectors got the winning recipe much early in this edition. It is upto them to capitalize on this or treat this as one off and go back to their usual thoughtless decisions. Give Rossi the realm, he will bring the best of what he gets.

I knew it before it happened. When MVijay was beaten because the ball kept low in a cross bat pull shot, I knew he is going to swing again- lower this time, but the ball is NOT going to go lower this time to take top edge (because it was a cross bat shot). Why cant he play straight, within the V, during the initial / powerplay overs at least? Elementary. Mr. Sunil Gavaskar, can you please advise him?

Mathews is the among the 5 best batters of Pune as per average for this IPL,3rd best among foreign players. Among bowler he is has the 5th best economy rate, while being the best among foreign players who have bowled over 5 overs. So what is the big argument ?

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 20:38 GMT)

I am really disappointed that not many comments included the good work of Captain Ross ,Five years back not a single soul knew who mathews was let alone him as a captain.... Ross is a far more experienced ,explosive and all seasoned captain and batsmen than Mathews. In my words out of all the seasons this was the first match they had everything settled, correct openers(though Uthappa needs to understand his place and role), batting order and bowling was good as it is most of the times... Watching the match, i actually understand the disappointment Sanga feels for Mathews in their home side, Mathews needs to rest and learn from the master first !!!

Posted by uvkani on (April 15, 2013, 20:30 GMT)

@brutalanalyst uv has performed well so far as an allrounder for pune warriors .he took a wicket in each match played so far with best economy rate when

compared to main bowlers. 3 matches 4 wickets overall record of him for pune batting 17 matches ,runs 397, avg 33.08 , strike rt- 130.16;team=4787;type=trophy bowling 16 innings ,wickets-13, avg 18.46 , economy rt-6.48;team=4787;type=trophy

its not because of him pune is failing ,team management is responsible for pune's failure

they are not utilising abhishek nayar as an allrounder .manish pandey didnt played well so far but they r giving more chances to him

leaving behind parvez rasool who can bowl as better as rahul sharma.

handing the captaincy to indian player is better instead of giving to overseas player like mathews.

Posted by A__J on (April 15, 2013, 20:22 GMT)

The 4 overseas for PWI should be those who played today. ie Finch, Marsh, Smith and Taylor. If you want to strenghten the bowling marsh can be swapped for richardson or mendis. they bought the players, why not use them?

Posted by thinkgood on (April 15, 2013, 20:13 GMT)

Wake up call for CSK. Top order or no top order loosing early wickets (literally thrown away) shows lack of discipline in CSK batsmen. By the time Dhoni (#6) and Albie (#7) come to bat its too late. Either Dhoni moves up the batting order or others dont just throw away their wickets cheaply.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 19:51 GMT)

I am a diehard CSK fan, but today I was so disappointed with that performance. Seriously guys, we need to do better, and like some1 pointed, we can't always chase down 70 runs in the last 5 overs.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 19:38 GMT)

Still don't understand why Hussey was dropped. Morkel didn't do a thing in the game.

Posted by khs_shk2000 on (April 15, 2013, 19:33 GMT)

This is my request to the Warrior managment please keep this 4 foreign players always in your team. ( Dont mind for this if you need to drop Angelo.)

Posted by LAKingsFan on (April 15, 2013, 19:28 GMT)

I'm not sure if this was an upset. I saw it coming. The signals were all over the place. You can't score 70 runs in last five over in each and every chase. That ain't gonna happen. In all four matches, CSK never had a decent start let alone an explosive one. Even when they had to chase 8 RPO they played as if only 2 RPO was required. I don't know how long they're going to pursue with Vijay at the top. He's eating up a lot of balls upfront and adds pressure to the rest of the batting line up. Anirudhha and Hussey should open at the top and keep Morkel off from playing 11.

Posted by Master_Mihil on (April 15, 2013, 19:27 GMT)

Mathews only plays for SL. And Ross might be a good captain because of language barriers. But mark my words leaving mathews out is a mistake. He can hit it. Bowl very well, and athletic in the field. my thinking is for next match mathews should sit out. mitch marsh or roscoe should be replaced from results from that match.

Posted by ThilankaK on (April 15, 2013, 19:18 GMT)

Well done smith, you are a real superman, I think now Alan Donald should realise smith is the no 1 foreign player in the team, I think AD made a mistake, please leave out Ross tailor, replace Mathews for all rounder leave out mash when Samuel fit, captaincy should go to Yuveraj because Mathews has too much workload has to bowl 4 overs, he should bat @ no.4. my next match team is 1. finch 2. Uththappa 3. yuvi 4.mathews 5.smith 6.mash (if samuels fit he should bat @ no.3 & leave out mash) 7.M.pandy 8.nayer 9.kumar 10.sharma 11.dinda

Posted by gandhi's 11 on (April 15, 2013, 19:08 GMT)

blessing's in disguise for pwi for not playing angelo...i was in favor for playing smith right from the much so that the day he got into playing 11 ,i put him as my fanatsay team captain and i got rewarded :-)

Posted by Unmesh_cric on (April 15, 2013, 19:00 GMT)

Finally some sense prevailed in Pune camp and they picked their best performer from the last season--Steven Smith. In my opinion, you should NEVER drop your top performer unless there are some issues with fitness, discipline etc.. If you drop your top performer, it sends a wrong signal to the team. It indicates that performance is not the criteria for getting picked! With today's performance, Smith showed the team management that they made a huge mistake by excluding him in the first few games. This guy has a positive approach to batting and handles pressure very well. Also, he is one of the best fielders in world cricket in my opinion. Go Smithy!!

Posted by CricketAkshay on (April 15, 2013, 18:57 GMT)

Chennai has to sort out the problem of handling new-ball. Clearly, Vijay is struggling against swing bowling. Hussey and Vijay should open the batting henceforth. They need to score atleast 40 runs in the first six overs. However, talking about this match umpire Chaudhry has to be removed as he hasn't proven to be a good umpire. Couple of lbw decisions against Finch and Virat Kohli's knick in previous match is enough to show that he is not a proper umpire. Apart from that, it was a poor display of batting. When Jadeja struck a few blistering boundaries, Badrinath's job was to rotate the strike. Instead gave a simple catch to Smith and that was the turning point for Pune and exploited the situation and came up trumps.

Posted by sameer_warun on (April 15, 2013, 18:47 GMT)

It's shame that MSD can't beat pune with this team! Look at his team except Srikkanth all are test/ODI/IT20 players, now what? Does captaincy should change? but Sunrisers beat PWI with only two international batsman, three international bowlers , one international all rounder, we should have to understand that this is a TEAM game, we Indian people blaming ponting, sanga, mahela, Mathews, gilly because of their overseas captains but they can't do magic always, here & there they will do but always our Indian boys has to play good cricket.

Posted by zeus_kris on (April 15, 2013, 18:46 GMT)

CSK needs Hussey to play. Hussey is one of the best bats that can play out dangerous bowlers at the top. CSK team needs to bat around Hussey. Hussey is easily capable of scoring more than run a ball, and go ballistic when he is well set. Without Hussey at the top the team had no direction and everyone went to their shell and played out dot balls. Vijay, Raina needs to be more agressive and take the initiative.

What CSK needs is better batsmen at the top. They need to play either Albie or Morris, but not both together at the expense of a better bat at the top.

Posted by nkoch on (April 15, 2013, 18:46 GMT)

Smith does it for Warriors. Can Angelo do a Vettori and sit himself out for rest of the season? He simply doesn't fit in. Special thanks to Amma for giving Steve the opportunity to prove it.

Posted by RottPhiler on (April 15, 2013, 18:45 GMT)

I feel that Chennai's team selection was a wee bit off for this match. Albie Morkel certainly had to play, as he is too big a talent and too good a finisher to leave on the bench, but the man making way for him should have been Dirk Nannes and not Michael Hussey.

If you can make a case that the 4 international players cancel each other out, then the edge that CSK has over their opponents is in its 7 Indian players, 6 of which - Vijay, Raina, Badrinath, MS Dhoni, Jadeja, and Ashwin are automatic selections. The weak link therefore is that 7th Indian player, which was either Mohit Sharma or Ankit Rajpoot in the previous games both of whom they were able to hide down the order in the tail. In this game however that 7th Indian player, namely Anirudha had to play up the order causing the better to players to virtually play one spot too low.

great win by the team...good to see Taylor back as captain where he should be....he knows how to win...

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 15, 2013, 18:41 GMT)

What a gr88 win someone of us truely said miracle will be happen in the evening Chennai is going to lost. I hv strong feeling chennai hv taken this match very lighlty as they dnt want to win.. Nevertheless strong performance by Finch n pune. I must tell u this boy is very highly rated in australia. Its truely!! Smith played outsanding knock. I always want smith not becoz he is brilliant finisher but also very brilliant fielder. Now, I want Tailor to show some talent its missing by far. Whn Yuvi come back Pune looks strong..Marsh shld play up the order N for Mathews plz be injured now! Todays defeat makes this IPL more interesting.. thnx

Posted by ladycricfan on (April 15, 2013, 18:33 GMT)

Well, you can't win every time. We need Hussey back. He gives stability at the top. The pitch slowed down a bit and batting looked difficult after half time. Finch and Smith batted very well and their bowlers finished the job. BKumar was exceptional. Well done PWI.

Posted by NP_NY on (April 15, 2013, 18:32 GMT)

Mathews out, Smith in, and Pune win. No brainer!

Posted by Porky_PigTheToon on (April 15, 2013, 18:29 GMT)

That guy named 'Baseball-Scks' must be praying for PWI's defeat but that didn't happen. lol

Anyway, What a comprehensive win for PWI. It looks like a Complete team with some serious Power-Hitters and Specialist shorter-format players. Finch in brutal form is a certain in playing XI. M. Marsh all-round ablties gives PWI much needed balance. After, today's perfrmnace and keeping in mind Smith has always done well for PWI in past as well, he is likely to retain his place. Tht leaves PWI wth 1 slot for ovrseas player, I would pick Matthews over Taylor as ever since Taylor left RCB he has not performed well in IPL whereas Matthews gives much needed balance to the side. If Yuvi is fit, this team becomes the team to beat. Only Utthapa needs to play quickly, He seems to be low on confidence. Enjoying CSK's loss and its BORING to see them win again n again :p This IPL is getting HOT :) !!

Posted by thinkgood on (April 15, 2013, 18:27 GMT)

Top order failure again for CSK. CSK needs to keep wickets for slog overs at the end. It was its mantra for the last 5 IPLs. This IPL they seem to be in a hurry to loose them early on and left with no power at the end. Good lesson for CSK at an early stage of the tournament.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 18:18 GMT)

turning point of the match was right there even before the match started... CSK dropping HUSSEY nd choosing MORKEL(didnt bowl nd couldnt help it with BAT!! ) AND pune taking in STEVE SMITH(blasted in the last five overs and took them to a good score ).... this match again shows t20 is very unpredictable and NO team can be taken lightly!!

Posted by KallisTheGreatest on (April 15, 2013, 18:15 GMT)

Steve Smith is the Rohit Sharma of Pune.He was the top performer for them last year too.He should be a permanent member.Ideal xi for next match.: Finch, Uthappa, Smith, Yuvraj, Mathews(c), Suman, Nayar, Marsh/Mendis, Kumar, Sharma, Dinda

Posted by Temuzin on (April 15, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

Playing Aniriudh was a mistake for CSK. He simply derailed CSK's chase. CSK never got the start they needed and were kind of bogged down later on by good bowling by PWI bowlers especially Bhuvneshwar. I think CSK underestimated PWI and paid the price. Hussey should have played in this match.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 15, 2013, 18:09 GMT)

Top 5 batsman lost this for CSK. They should never have let the rate get out of hand like that. Can't always leave 14 per over for the finishers.

Posted by AltafPatel on (April 15, 2013, 18:04 GMT)

wierd decision by CSK. Bravo at 7 and Morkel at 8 !! and also Morkel didnt get an over to bowl ! rubbish entertainment by CSK and Dhoni. they deserve the defeat.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 18:02 GMT)

I think CSK put themselves in these situation way too often and paid the price for it. They should not leave more than 50 off the last 5. Dhoni, Bravo, Morkel can get anything, but they do need to get set and not be put under unnecessary pressure.

Posted by cricstaranalysis on (April 15, 2013, 17:50 GMT)

Nice to see now what will be PWI's side for the next match and who will be the captain

Posted by cricstaranalysis on (April 15, 2013, 17:46 GMT)

Steve Smith is undoubtedly the best player of PWI and one of the best in this IPL and imagine he was dropped. He should lead the side as Ross Taylor seems to be out of touch and PWI should try out with Luke Wright.

Posted by ibbani on (April 15, 2013, 17:34 GMT)

I like this PWI, they have a good set of batsmen, Rosco, Robin,Pandey, Yuvi, Steve Smith,. Now I see 6 wickets down for CSK. oh I just cant imagine the wonderstruck yellow fans (wayak) to se their team losing in their home pitch, PWI come on, I need you to win this match.

Posted by cricketr123987 on (April 15, 2013, 17:06 GMT)

CSK are on the way to perish today !!! Go Pune xD

Posted by Sobat on (April 15, 2013, 16:48 GMT)

funny the captian is droped... when the top 6 have failed to make runs all matchers.. either u bat the captian in the top 4 or drop someone who have failed.... so bad............. in the top

Posted by CricketAkshay on (April 15, 2013, 16:41 GMT)

Good toss to win as it looks a perfect batting strip and expected to get slower. However don't underrate the CSK batting. 160 chase-able.

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 16:37 GMT)

csk cant afford to leave out HUSSEY, provided the ability he's got to give good start......bad decision !!!!!

Posted by cricstaranalysis on (April 15, 2013, 16:35 GMT)

Steven Smith should be leading the side

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 15, 2013, 16:32 GMT)

Pune are a better side without Mathews and Yuvraj, Mathews is a good player but should never have been captain and Yuvraj always gives of the impression he's to big for the side not a team player his ego and presence disrupts every team he's played for in the IPL from what I've seen. I remember when he was at Kings11 and they had a terrible season they got there first win and everyone was up on the bench but Yuvraj stayed seated and miserable because he hadn't got any runs despite the first team victory.

Posted by cricstaranalysis on (April 15, 2013, 16:27 GMT)

Really cannot believe why Steve Smith is dropped. He was there best batsman last year and is a great finisher. Also the four foreigners should be Steve Smith,Aaron Finch,Luke Wright and Angelo Mathews.

Posted by kevepere on (April 15, 2013, 16:14 GMT)

respectable total by pune. But as always CSK are the favourites

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 16:10 GMT)

Really good to see Ross as skipper, great knock by Finch & Smith but i just feel that we should maybe have Luke Wright in the final 11 before M.Marsh

Posted by vishnuvg on (April 15, 2013, 16:09 GMT)

160 is a good score in Chennai against Chennai . . Lets see whether Dhoni and his boys can come up with an other great chase against the Warriors .

Posted by   on (April 15, 2013, 14:30 GMT)

Good to see Ross back as captain as well as steven smith back to team 1st match for him. All best PWI.

Posted by Deepak-Tarava on (April 15, 2013, 14:22 GMT)

PWI squad looking good but you have to play good cricket on field to beat a time like CSK in their home ground. Though it is not impossible. Hope to see a good match.
