Steven Smith's off glance

Plays from the IPL game between Chennai Super Kings and Pune Warriors in Chennai
17

The shot
It is a reverse lap. It is a reverse flick. It is a reverse leg glance, or an off glance if you will. It is Steven Smith up to mischief. It is a huge six. In the last over of Pune Warriors' innings, Smith switched the stance early, but not the grip. Dwayne Bravo bowled one that would have hit the top of off had Smith not sent it sailing over short third man and some 20 rows behind the boundary. The most incredible part of the shot: it wasn't a switch hit.

The crossing that wasn't
In the 18th over of the match, Mitchell Marsh cut Bravo in the air and straight to third man, and was so consumed by his disappointment he didn't bother to even look up. Smith, though, was alert and wanted the strike, but to his chagrin he was the only one making that effort. By the time the catch was taken, Smith had reached within diving distance of the stumps at the strikers' end, but Marsh hadn't moved, and the new batsman faced the next delivery.

Smith would encounter similar disappointment in the last over when Manish Pandey would refuse to try a single and get bowled when slogging, leaving the new batsman to face a dot ball: no run off the last two balls.

The introduction
You know a Twitter joke has overstayed its welcome when it has reached Ravi Shastri, admittedly not an admirer of the micro-blogging site. At the toss, after introducing the captains, he went on to the match referee, "… and not Sir Ravindra, but Rajendra Jadeja." SMH.

The drop
You are a batsman who has not been sent out to bat even though seven others have had a hit. You are unlikely to get a bowl. It's not quite an evening you are enjoying, and in the second over of your fielding effort you have a sitter coming your way at mid-on and you spill it. M Vijay, the beneficiary of your benevolence, goes on to add 23 more. You are T Suman, and where is the hole you can hide yourself in?

If PWI fans really love their team to win this year, they should never ask to have that Mathews guy for Marsh or Samuels. That one place should go to Luke Wright, the young Brit. Bring in that useless Mathews kiddo, you are kicking away your chances. That Mathews guy is a joke.

where is Fast and furious Kane Richardson? If he is in PWI XI. PWI more balanced side.

Its time ishwar pandey gets a chance..... Suman may have to sit out.... Nayar gives us bowling option.... Yuvi for manish pandey gives us an extra option..... Ishwar pandey for suman bcoz we dont need 8 batsman... An extra fast bowler will help..

PSW dont need manish pandey... He was trying to hit boundaries when ideally he shud have given the strike to smith.... Also they dont need 8 batsmen ... What they need is a fast bowler...... For a 20 over match 6 batsmen are more than enough..... If 6 batsman cant score whaty will two more do... Instead they can have one more fast bowler... When yuvraj comes back in place of manish pandey they automatically get one bowler extra....... Finch uthappa marsh yuvraj smith taylor nayar rahul sharma bhuveneshwar dinda and one more fast bowler...

I think "The Shot" should be called Reverse Dilscoop. :)

You can't blame Suman. He has won matches for DC in the earlier editions. True, he dropped Vijay but made amends immediately to dismiss Raina. He played a cameo against MI when the big guns failed. Ideal combination for PWI is - Yuvi in for Pandey and Luke Right in for Ross. Mathew has not made an impact so far.

Rasool is big hitter. He should replace Suman.Srikant Wagh should come in place of Dinda.Srikant already has IPL experience and is also big hitting all rounder. When Yuraj was captain of Warrriors..Srikant Wagh found place in playing 11.Angelo should replace Ross Taylor.Yuraj in place of Pandey and Luke Wright in place of Marsh.

Mattews for Marsh, Samuels for Rosco, Someone for Dinda and IPL 6 Title will be Pune Warriors !

  • dummy4fb on April 16, 2013, 2:48 GMT

Rasool can replace Suman, Pandey would be replaced by Yuvi, Taylor can be replaced by Samuels and then Pune will be on a roll only if they can find some one to replace Dinda

The absence of that Mathews guy made all the difference for PWI fortunes.
