Can Pune build on Chepauk success?

Match facts

April 17, 2013
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

Big Picture

Pune Warriors against Sunrisers Hyderabad might not be one of the most high-profile matches of the IPL, but both teams have played better than expected already in this competition. While Sunrisers have already recorded wins against Royal Challengers Bangalore (holding their own in a Super Over) and (a much-fancied but underperforming) Delhi Daredevils, Warriors pulled off a huge upset on Monday, beating Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk.

The biggest plus for Warriors is that, ever since they broke their 11-game losing streak with a seven-wicket win against Rajasthan Royals on April 11, their batting has managed to put together moderate totals at least. After being bowled out for 104 and 99, they've scored over 140 in their next three games. There is still a lot of work to do though; against Super Kings, they looked on target for a lot more than the 159 they ended with, but the middle order, bar Steven Smith, could not build on Aaron Finch's blitz at the top. Sunrisers will draw confidence from the fact that one of Warriors' batting flops came against them: when the teams met three days into the tournament, Sunrisers managed to defend 126 at Uppal, with Amit Mishra causing trouble with turn and loop, and Dale Steyn making short work of the lower order.

Both teams have decisions to make about their playing XIs. Warriors' Yuvraj Singh had to sit out of the Super Kings match due to a recurrence of a back problem, and will not be fit in time for Wednesday's match either. Full-time captain Angelo Mathews - who had to sit out in Chennai due to the ban on Sri Lankan players there - should return, but with Finch, Smith and Mitchell Marsh all doing well, it could be at the expense of stand-in leader Ross Taylor. Warriors must be mulling whether they want to disturb their winning combination at all. Sunrisers have the option of playing the West Indies captain, allrounder Darren Sammy, who arrived from the Caribbean a couple of days ago after the birth of his daughter. However, with Kumar Sangakkara and Dale Steyn being sure starters, they would have to pick between Thisara Perera and Cameron White if they want to play him.

Players to watch

Apart from taking that spectacular boundary catch against Kolkata Knight Riders last season, Steven Smith was one of Warriors' few bright sparks, scoring 362 runs at 40.22 in an otherwise forgetful 2012. After being made to sit out Warriors' first four games this season, he produced what turned out to be the match-winning innings against Super Kings. After Warriors had inexplicably slowed down after Finch's assault, Smith provided the final surge: his unbeaten 39 came off 16, going after Dirk Nannes and Dwayne Bravo. The shot of the game was a reverse-flick for six over third man. If Warriors are to improve on their record this season, Smith will have to play another central role in their campaign.

Compared to some other teams in the tournament, Sunrisers have quite a solid bowling line-up: Steyn, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra … The same cannot be said of their batting. There's Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White, with Parthiv Patel playing the supporting role, but not much else - at least on paper. Hanuma Vihari, Akshath Reddy, Ravi Teja and the other local batsmen, while they have had their moments, are yet to contribute defining innings. At some point, Sunrisers will need them to play a winning hand and it is left to be seen whether they can step up.

Stats and Trivia

  • Parthiv Patel needs one more run to get to a 1000 IPL runs. His runs have been spread across stints with Chennai Super Kings, Kochi Tuskers, Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • In Warriors' previous game, against Mumbai Indians, Ashok Dinda went at 15.75 runs an over - that equaled the record for the most expensive spell in IPL cricket, alongside Varun Aaron's in the second qualifier in 2012

Quotes

"They can make the last four. They have some big hitters in Uthappa, Finch, Taylor, Smith and Marsh, who can win on their own."
Former Warriors captain Sourav Ganguly backs the team to have their best season yet

"Yuvraj is not going to be playing in the next game but hopefully he is ready for the game after that. Obviously he is a big part of our team and it affects the balance of our team when Yuvi doesn't play."
Ross Taylor offers an update on Yuvraj Singh's fitness

Give sangakarra a break and play Quinton De Kock..He is a wonderful striker and let White captain. My IX would be 1) De Kock 2) Parthiv 3) Akshat Reddy 4) White(C) 5) Parrera 6) Ravi Teja/ Vihari 7) Ashsih Reddy 8) Amit Mishra 9) Steyn 10) Ishant 11) Anand Rajan

For Pune ...just keep it simple .Mathews out , rest Taylor, give luke wright a go, let Nayar bat up the order, he is one of the top scorer in domestic season this year, give other youngsters a go who are in form and dont waste the talent.

    1) Finch 2) Wright 3) Suman 4) Nayar 5) Smith 6) Uthapa (WK) 7) Marsh 8) Bhuvneshwar 9) Rahul 10) Pandey 11) Rasool

2 frontline pacers (Bhuvi & Pandey) 2 quality spinner (rahul & rassol) 2 All rouders ( Marsh & nayar) Wright can bowl and Rasool can hit the ball hard

Both the teams are quite doing well, have no much expectations from these teams though. Best of luck to both the teams.

Sunrisers need a serious rethinking. Get Darren Sammy and J.P. Duminy in playing XI. Foreign players for the next match should be Darren Sammy, J.P. Duminy , Dale Steyn and Thisara Perera/ Quinto De kock. Need to get an Indian batsman. Somehow rope in Mohd. Kaif by having one of the Indian players stated injured. Mohd. Kaif will bring in the solidity required in the middle order. He is a brilliant fielder and can be handy to the foreign captains in order to take certain tactful decision. Come on V.V.S. and Srikanth. Get the thinking cap on.

They might win again today however this is not going to last for very long especially in the playoffs when the pressure is doubled. Do get the only experienced Indian batsman who is not playing IPL 6. Get Mohd. Kaif and the cup is yours.

lol @indiancoolguy now some of the indian fans here who were suggesting sanga to be dropped must have got their answer.sunrisers are 16-3 after 4 overs the guy who replaced sanga (dekock) and the guy who replaced sanga as skipper(white) both alltogether scored an epic 2 runs from 10 balls.and well done matthews so far.

  • IndianCoolGuy on April 17, 2013, 10:25 GMT

Pune desparately need parvez rasool... I wonder how can they play suman//panday when they loose genuine spinner and all rounder.. give rasool a try he has proved his metal in domestic and list a games plus he destroyed Australian line up in warm up games .. he should be there definitely.... best luck pune

  • quittthewhinging on April 17, 2013, 9:57 GMT

It seems there a number of players in SRH on the point of being dropped. Quinton de Kock has been suggested by some posters. He will get a chance eventually so why not today? Pune is one of the weaker teams. Also, a fact being overlooked is that he is a W/K so play him as such and the batting will not be weakened. Let him open because that is his usual position and he will not slow things down. If he gets going, just the opposite in fact. Sanga should take a break.

  • sumit_quest on April 17, 2013, 9:54 GMT

T Suman for PWI can't bat, can't bowl, can't field... Put Birla or bhatia in.. at least they will get you catches. Rest Sanga and play De Kock..Averages 37 in T20s with strike rate of 141....

PWI are real warriors doing justice to their name and money. they are looking like legend killers, good spirit...ross taylor is a good captain , be carefull SRH. AARON AND ROBIN ..AND BATMAN , SUPERMAN, SPIDERMAN STEVEN SMITH ARE COMING..........

  • MADHU.T on April 17, 2013, 9:35 GMT

I think pune warriors made a blunder by making Angelo Matthews as captain. He should not be in the playing XI as he do not bowl well or bat well. They can make Steven smith as captain as he has experience captaining sydney team in Big bash.

  • mohan440 on April 17, 2013, 9:30 GMT

if sunrisers replace sammy in place of sangakara..........and dhawan come back will strengthen the team

  • srdoc on April 17, 2013, 8:55 GMT

@sumanthgutta PWI don't tinker with winning combination, being a captain for Kiwis Ross Taylor will do fine job for Pune as skipper

  • on April 17, 2013, 8:52 GMT

Let's assume this match is being played in chennai and rest the current captains sanga and mathews. Reason is simple: "performance". Match would become much more competitive and interesting

  • R0xy on April 17, 2013, 8:51 GMT

Sanga should definitely contribute off field only with his experience. Now I don't think he should consider himself in the playing 11. Sammy should come in place of him.

  • Tal_Botvinnik on April 17, 2013, 8:51 GMT

sanga needs to keep when keeping he avgs 40.67 in odi,30.00 in t20is and not keeping he avgs 26.26 in odis and o.00 in t20is drop patel, his keeping and slow batting is poor. send sanga to open with dhawan/vihari. de kock at 03. give chances to rana, chipli

  • sumanthgutta on April 17, 2013, 8:34 GMT

Bathinda11, you are spot on with the Hyderabad team. But who do you think will captain Pune with that team?

In my opinion, either Ross Taylor or Angelo Mathews should play few more games and along with that comes their captaincy.

  • on April 17, 2013, 8:23 GMT

I think Pune has become a good team after their last match win. They just have to replace Ross Taylor with Luke Wright and make Smith Captain.

For SRH, Sanga and White should give chance to Kock and Sammy.

    Pune: 1)Finch, 2) Wright, 3)Uthappa, 4)Smith, 5)Pandey, 6)Nayar, 7)M Marsh, 8)B Kumar, 9)R Sharma, 10)Dinda, 11)Rasool

    SRH: 1)De Kock, 2)Parthiv Patel, 3)Akshat Reddy 4)Perera 5)Sammy, 6)Ashish Reddy, 7)Ravi Teja, 8)Mishra, 9)Steyn, 10)Tyagi, 11) Ishant Sharma

  • srdoc on April 17, 2013, 8:19 GMT

@ siri12345 i am also a great admirer of Sangakkara but in t20 cricket you have to choose the horses for the courses. Only the ones who can deliver the goods on a given day should be given a chance, unfortunately Sanga is not one of those today

  • nirbak on April 17, 2013, 8:17 GMT

Srh shud check a new open with Q d k0ck... Cz their batting line up is n0t gud en0ugh to chase 150 or higher,.....plz think about it...

  • Cric_lover1234 on April 17, 2013, 8:15 GMT

@ IndianCoolGuy : yep u r correct, sanga isnt look like a T20 material now. in early editions of IPL he did so well specially for kings xi.bt nw he is like ur former players ganguly, sehwag, or tendulkar....anyway he is nt juz a test batman, he is still a fantastic oneday batsman..... so sanga shud give some space to our brilliant local talent DE KOCK or JP!!!

  • StevieS on April 17, 2013, 8:09 GMT

priceless1 you are right, the team that wins this competition will have the better local talent, 4 players can only do so much and if you have a couple of very bad local bowlers or batsman that is what is going to cost you.

  • on April 17, 2013, 8:06 GMT

my XI fo9r warriors finch , pandey , yuvi, utthapa, mathews ,smith, marsh, rasool, , dinda , bhuvi, rahul sharma!! i dont think a better playing XI than this except chennai!! my chennsi XI baba aparajith, vijay, raina , badri, dhoni ,jaddu, bravo, albie , morris , ashwin , nannes!!!!

  • on April 17, 2013, 8:01 GMT

Pine must not change the winning combination. Yes finds can be replaced only if big hitting alrounder is available.

  • siri12345 on April 17, 2013, 7:57 GMT

@bathinda dont worry.the things u r suggesting are not gonna happen anyways as the coaches and team management certainly knows a things or two better than u.

  • siri12345 on April 17, 2013, 7:55 GMT

@siddharth iyer i dont think u have enough knowledge about this game.or else how on this earth can sammy replace sanga??first place sunrisers are a bit weak in batting and sanga can provide them some stability in the middle order.not a hit and miss guy like sammy.secondly if sanga sits out i cant imagine sunrisers can win even a single game because u also need a clever skipper to lead ur team which can only be seen in sanga.and last year about vettori he resigned because he did a blunder by giving virat kohli the 19th over due to which rcb lost.so far leave blunder sanga has lead the team brilliantly.so why should he step down.

  • on April 17, 2013, 7:55 GMT

another test, because SRH is playing with 9 batsmen.. so it will be a test .. sanga should come at 1,2, or 3 and he should score fastly, how ever.. he may not bat well. if dis works out a quick 30 , 40 will give a plotform to the rest. no batsmen in SRH is looking at sanga wen the team is in trouble, so no probleb coming at the top . keeping steyn away is like suicide. any way we got another good foreign player in da form of clint mc cay. we can try him. tody my team: 1, parthiv,2, raviteja 3, sangakkara, 4 cameron white 5,tisara parera 6, vihari 7, aashish reddy 8,amith mishra 9, dale steyn 10,veer pratp singh 11, ishant. this will be a good combination. againest PWI vp singh is a tallented player now we got WAQAR as bowling coach so he will shine . we had a releaf for chennai matches sanga will definately sit out, good luck SRH .

  • srdoc on April 17, 2013, 7:52 GMT

It's the time the think tank of SRH decide on the effective combination taking into failure of Sanga and the inability of Parthiv to force the pace, and to make the optimum use of somebody like Darren Sammy, who has the distinction of having lead WI to world cup win. The best combination of today's match against Pune warriors, till Shikar Dhawan retuns and having a look at Sangkkara for home matches only. 1. Quinton De kock 2. Akshat Reddy 3. White(captain)orDarren Sammy 4.Hanuma Vihari 5.Thesara Perera, 6. Parthiv Patel (wk) 7. Ashish Reddy 8. Amit Mishra 9.Dale Steyn 10.Ishant Sharma 11. Sudeep Tyagi

  • spant on April 17, 2013, 7:52 GMT

Pune think tank needs a replacement! They have some good Indian players in dug out about which neither coach nor captain is aware!! Any sensible person will go for Pervez Rasool in place of T Suman!!! Team selection has one of the main reason of Pune's initial failure!!!!!

  • priceless1 on April 17, 2013, 7:45 GMT

Funny how they allowed to pick only four international players to the side and put all the pressure on them what about the rest of the 7 indian players? why there are not getting highlighted ?looks like CSK has picked up all the local talent and left other teams to relay on their only 4 over seas players do all the work

  • on April 17, 2013, 7:34 GMT

Its really sad to see top class t20 players like sammy and duminy sit out..yes we love the legends but the team comes first..take some lessons from vettori who dropped himself in the last years season to balance the team..

  • siri12345 on April 17, 2013, 7:28 GMT

lol at some of the guys here who want sanga and matthews out from the team.true that today one of them has to be in loosing side because when two champions play against each other both cannot win,but beleive me guys these two teams will be the first twoteams in iplto reach the knockout and both in presence of sanga and matthews and take the revenge for mahela,s daredevils.common pune and srh but only with sanga and matthews.

  • StevieS on April 17, 2013, 7:22 GMT

Pune are in a bit of a pickle, while Taylor is out of form who do you replace him with? Luke Wright is a dirty slogger at best and an average bowler who will leak plenty of runs and Mathews is also out of form and isn't a very good captain.

  • Paiudupi on April 17, 2013, 7:21 GMT

My prediction : Pune Warriors will, without doubt, win this match. Sorry for lovers of SRH. Today is the day for Warriors. Go Warriors, Go. Warriors have strong batting line up and bowlers too. For SRH, what can only Steyn do ? He needs some supports too. Further, SRH Batting is inconsistent. So, I do not think SRH chances.

  • on April 17, 2013, 6:40 GMT

It's an obvious thing that Sammy should replace Sanga. Sammy is a proved captain, decent batsman for t20s and is a bowler. That change can surely win the game for Sun Risers Hyderabad.

  • Slesh on April 17, 2013, 6:07 GMT

though i hate to say for if Sanga doesn't open the innings and doesn't score some big innings today he should drop himself for the next game & give the chance to De Kock before the chennai game where he has to sit out.

  • IndianCoolGuy on April 17, 2013, 6:00 GMT

@RAJESRH : Excellent combination Rajesh. You took out Dale Stayn who is a leading performer for SRH and kept Mr. Sanga as it is without captaincy who is a Non-Performer. Mr Sanga is in the team because of his captaincy, and if White is captaining then what Sanga is doing in the team? rather you should opt De Kock or JP Duminy. SRH should replace non-performing-players. First in the list is Mr.Sanga, he should be replaced by De Kock, or Sammy or Duminy. Parthav is also not performing well, but he should be in because of 2 reasons. firstly he is a wicket keeper and SRH dont have local players at all who can even score 20 runs like parthav. White should take the captaincy. If Dhavan comes in, then he should open the innings. Order shoule be 1)Dhavan 2) Parthav 3) Duminy/De Kock/ Sammy 4) White 5)Parera 6) Ravi Teja 7)Akshant Reddy 8) Mishara 9) Dale Stayn 10)Ishant Sharma 11)Sudheep Tyagi. though i hate to say for if Sanga doesn't open the innings and doesn't score some big innings today he should drop himself for the next game & give the chance to De Kock before the chennai game where he has to sit out.

It's an obvious thing that Sammy should replace Sanga. Sammy is a proved captain, decent batsman for t20s and is a bowler. That change can surely win the game for Sun Risers Hyderabad.

Pune are in a bit of a pickle, while Taylor is out of form who do you replace him with? Luke Wright is a dirty slogger at best and an average bowler who will leak plenty of runs and Mathews is also out of form and isn't a very good captain.
