Hat-tricks in the IPL

Sunrisers Hyderabad had defended 126 in their IPL debut against Pune Warriors in Hyderabad. When the return game started this afternoon in Pune, the giant screen at the Sahara Stadium flashed "Revenge". Warriors almost exacted it: they restricted Sunrisers to 119 and then needed 19 off 19 in their chase, with six wickets in hand. Sunrisers used up just 13 of those 19 deliveries to take six wickets, four of them falling to Amit Mishra, who took his third IPL hat-trick, as Warriors imploded in spectacularly inept fashion.

Four of the last six batsmen, including captain Angelo Mathews, fell swinging wildly, something that could be put down to collective brain-fade instead of the benign asking-rate. Three of those batsmen were allrounders - Mitchell Marsh, Abhishek Nayar and Mathews himself. Marsh wanted to hit Dale Steyn out of the ground, Nayar tried it against Thisara Perera and Mathews against Mishra. All three holed out on a pitch Mathews himself had called 'up-and-down' and slow at the toss, suggesting those shots would be mighty difficult to pull off.

A stunned Manish Pandey took a single off the third ball of the 19th over, right after Mishra had dismissed Mathews, and watched in increasing horror as Rahul Sharma was bowled after a missed slog while trying to follow the trail blazed by the allrounders. Bhuvneshwar Kumar played for turn to a googly to depart lbw and Mishra completed the hat-trick, and an unbelievable win, with one more googly, as Ashok Dinda too pushed for a legbreak. Mishra's figures read 4-0-19-4 and came after his 30 off 24 had stretched Sunrisers to 119 for 8 from 44 for 6. Interestingly, Sunrisers had used up all their bowlers except their legspinners until the last two overs

Warriors were in the game throughout except for those final moments of madness. Bhuvneshwar Kumar moved it in and out and ran through the Sunrisers top order to leave them gasping at 17 for 4, including the wicket of stand-in captain Cameron White for a golden duck.

Biplab Samantray and Karan Sharma were unlikely candidates to fight back. Samantray batted sensibly to make a run-a-ball 37 before holing out to long off. Perera came in after Karan's wicket and it was expected he would resist, too. But he edged behind for 2, trying to drive almost every ball he faced.

It was left to Mishra to make vital runs once more. He came in after Perera was dismissed in the 11th over and hung around till the last, pushing Sunrisers well beyond 100 along with Ashish Reddy. Twenty-six came off the last two overs of the innings bowled by Mathews and Dinda.

Robin Uthappa and Aaron Finch came hard at Sunrisers, their opening stand worth 38 in just over four overs. Steyn was taken for 22 in his first two overs, but the way the openers fell was a peek into the way the sand castle would crumble later. Uthappa flicked Perera straight to deep square leg and Finch punched him to backward point off successive deliveries.

The size of the target and the pace of the start meant Warriors were always in front until the flood of wickets in the penultimate over. Mishra had been Player of the Match in Hyderabad, too, with 3 for 19.

I heard that Pune is not making Yuvraj as he can't play free which he is not doing even now. If we can make Yuvraj captain ,we will have a chance to get 4 Foreign Players

Posted by Tapash on (April 18, 2013, 11:04 GMT)

PWI must think to shuffle their team. There is no reason to include Mathews in the XI. In this team format there is no scope for PWI. They need Smith, Mitshel, Luke Wright and Finch as foreign players. Smith can perform as Captain. Dinda must be out of team. Try it..........!!!!

Posted by Sundara-Chandare on (April 18, 2013, 10:19 GMT)

i think SRH is much stronger team with dhawan.because dhawan+de cock can give really good start.and white can do decent job middle overs.and perera can finish well.its well balance team.and SRH's bowling attack is outstanding.they have already showed they can defend 120.go SRH go...

@Nampally, Look at who is in third place of most wickets with 100 runs.. true alrounder

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 18, 2013, 8:40 GMT)

@ Nampally:-I feel very sad about your attitude ...I can mention hunderds of times that foreign players have won the matches single handed. You just have two or 3 occasions ... You forget how RCB won half of their campaig due to Gayle and De villiars..If both of them were not there will they even win their first match even against mumbai and courtesy of Gayle how many matches have won by RCB !! .Due to KP Delhi won matches last season which seemed miracles to win.And forget about warner's innings .taking CSK side how many times albie ,Bravo hit a 6 or 4 or last over 15 in last 5 years to win matches for CSK as dhoni. They even qualified for the elimination round due to Bravo's last ball 6 win against KKR which gave them the precious 2 points.MI pollard and Malinga..Malinga was best wicket taker for 2 seasons and pollard only man to past 1000 runs + 50 wickets in a season .These wickets and runs were dedicated for Wins for their respective teams! Donot be so Blind like a frog in a well

It's great that the Sunrisers have won through bowling despite Steyn having a relatively bad day with the ball (SR 400 with bat isn't bad). Hope he has better days against stronger teams. I can't believe how many people are complaining about Q de Kock; considering it's his debut IPL match and aged only 20, he can only get better. Definitely deserves more chances at Sanga's expense. Sammy can only come in for Perera (which he will at Chennai), there's no way Sunrisers can weaken their batting to accommodate Sammy. Also, when Shikhar is fit, Parthiv Patel should be dropped as at least one of Quinton/Sanga will play and both can keep.

Posted by JG2704 on (April 18, 2013, 8:17 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 15:21 GMT) Would that (Sanga) be the same player who in 5 matches has a highest score of 28 , has not gone over a SR of 100 in any match in this year's IPL and has an average just shy of 17?

Posted by ajaygodbole on (April 18, 2013, 8:17 GMT)

How many times would pune try with Pandey? please bring Rasool in. Angelo should do a sanga and take a break, try luke wright or kane richardson. If they just wanted someone to warm the benches, they could have approached me :)

Posted by JG2704 on (April 18, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

@Nampally - Yes they are part the reason for foreign players coming into the side but can you honestly say it has nothing to do with bringing the crowds to IPL? When KP got injured we had folk on the threads saying IPL would not be the same without him and that's just 1 player. Some of the players you mentioned are also just coming through. This was De Kock's first inns in IPL. The thing I don't get about your post is that you seem to mention about the foreign players batting irresponsibly and include Ponting and yet I watched much of that MI inns and Ponting didn't exactly get out to an irresponsible shot - he's just not good enough at the moment. However in the same game his opening partner who is not foreign and thee biggest icon of his nation gets out to a horrible shot but gets no mention from you.

Posted by ramli on (April 18, 2013, 8:00 GMT)

SRH (or DC) has always been a very good bowling team ... that is why they were able to cause upsets in last edition ... PWI played as if to finish early, up their run-rate and that win was just a formality ... very silly shots played by PWI batsman at closing stages ... this is where one should take cue from MSD and try always to keep the score ticking with hard-run twos and singles ... PWI can hereafter aim to just cause come upsets and nothing more in this IPL

Posted by spant on (April 18, 2013, 7:45 GMT)

I have no idea, who selects the team for Pune? Must be quite unfamiliar with domestic cricket!!! Anybody following domestic cricket will scream that please bring Parveez Rasool in place of Suman!!!!!

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 7:12 GMT)

Why isn't Parveez Rasool playing. I cant belive that either of Suman, Nayar, Dinda and R Sharma are better than him...

There were nothing special from Cam White here. He didn't do anything better than Sangakkara.Only special thing was his duck.If that hat-trick not happened, they will still struggle to win the game.

The positive side of the IPL is underdogs are playing well. Dhoni got the most talented local talent team with ideal foreign players. But they also failed . This IPL is not for batsman anymore . U have to occupy the crease and make other teams do mistakes. This IPL is one of the best leagues after the 1st IPL of course. Hopefully atleast 2 underdogs teams from RR, Kings11, SRH or Pune would qualify . Hopefully ! Over hyped teams like mi , csk and rcb should be given a real hard time this time!

just as perera is greatest plus point for SRH, same way angela matthews is proving to be the greatest liability for PWI.he should have been embarrassed to destroy the previous winning combination ,particularly after the superb captaining capabilities shown by ross taylor.cricinfo please publish!

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 5:18 GMT)

pune was on the way to lose from the beginning even when they had a time when SRH was trumbling and strugling for online few runs due to some bad movemt of captain let SRH to take away the match from 15th over,,,........methews not worth of a captain specially for the team like pune...which have some big match winners like ross taylor ,,yuvraj,,,,smith,,,and we cant forget luke wright ,.......pune management should think twice for this....................

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 5:11 GMT)

it was 2 overs and 13 runs to win. the poor shot selection of Mathews made PWI loss. its all about milking the ball around and bat through the overs remain. I get the feeling tht PWi took it easily and leave too much to the end also.

Posted by Htc-Android on (April 18, 2013, 4:45 GMT)

@GRVJPR. Are u serious mate. Perera took 3 wickets today. If not for perara breakthroughs at crucial times, Pune would have finished the game before the 17th over. Also He took 9 wickets in the entire series and scored runs with the bat too. Lol. He took more wickets than steyn and Ishant. I remember You are the one who called Steyn overrated and said Ishant is better than him. No wonder why you live in delusional world..lol....Cricinfo Please publish.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 4:41 GMT)

SHOCKING performance by SRH .TILL NOW STEYN is the best bowler of SRH he went for runs 4 overs 1/34 and the others fired.. may be that is the magic of IPL . here the positives are whites captaincy.. that doesnt mean that he is the reason of mishras hattrick... white used his bowlers very brilliantly no formula , no plan,, just going through the situations.. he knows its a small total . to defend for these kind of a totals no formula works, just geting wickets is the only thing wil help. his plans changed according to situations.. thats worked... too many twists and turns.. steve smiths, unwanted shot which paid a lot . and michell marsh unnecessary hit .. both made pune pay......... any way its a good and big heart performance by SRH....

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 4:30 GMT)

Though most of players feel it was the karisma of gusty amit mishra that took the match away from the team but actually the sole blame of the loss falls on the hands of captain Mathews.... In all the matches Pune lost there was one thing common ,above par performance by bowlers, angelo mathews as the captain and third graded batting performance .Even after being one of the best bowling sides as i said in my previous comment MAthews doesnt know how to lead with an example....Please please make Ross Taylor the captain, not everyone is Dhoni ,captain needs experience of the game and most experienced overseas batsmen is Ross

Posted by sweetspot on (April 18, 2013, 4:29 GMT)

This is way too stressful to watch! This IPL has provided two super overs already too! Crazy stuff. Pune beat CSK, so CSK must have called their south brothers and told them to put a whack on them! This match was Pune's, deposited in the bank! How did they conjure a loss out of this situation? Mishra did his job for sure, but surely this kind of heart stopper cannot happen without Pune finding crazy ways to get out!

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 4:27 GMT)

Pune Warriors have disturbed the Winning Combination of Ross Taylor by Appointing Mathews as Captain. Mathews Leadership qualities are questionable and proves that he is incapable of even leading the Sri Lankan Team. I strongly think Mahela should take over the reigns again in the 50 Overs World Cup in 2015.

Posted by Lovetesh on (April 18, 2013, 4:13 GMT)

I don't understand why it is so hard for PWI to drop Matthews? He is no Ponting or Tendulkar of cricket with mountain of runs behind him. He is not performing so drop him. Simple. Play Luke Wright. Last year also they persisted with Samuels and benched Tamim Iqbal for entire season. PWI has good players and coach but they are not utilizing their resources well.

Posted by wizards_chatis on (April 18, 2013, 4:05 GMT)

Friends its pathetic batting display by PWI , Each player of pune dont know their role for what they are picking for. Its rediculous to see rahul sharma trying big shot without reason when pandey is on other end. pune player is not playing for their team , they all playing for their own . just like marsh, nayar , sharma , mathews . and not able to play full kota of over. Seriously , its time for big changes in the game, mathews is at worse when he trys to bat , bowl and captancy . change mathews and bring ross as captain Why they are rotating their player. change pandey , suman . marsh, mathews , dinda and add new blood to the team. If they continue like this , then its a shame for us guys who are supporting them till now.

Posted by Pranandu on (April 18, 2013, 4:02 GMT)

Some people are quick to pick on Sanga and Matthews, would like to see such comments made on world class Captains aka Ponting and Dhoni who have lost their way in this tournament. Dont be personal on players instead lets drill deep down and see where the weakness is coming from. I somewhat agree with Uvkani the management need to go back and see if they have selected the correct local outfit. What is happending here is that the 4 international players are all feeling the heat due to the raw local talent not delivering the goods. Look at Gayle isnt he failing too but the local back up is solid and we see that clearly in Royals and Sunrise, the best performer NOT Steyn, not sanga, not White, its Mishra.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 3:55 GMT)

I think Pune should chnge their batting order Suman, Pandey, Uthappa, Finch, Smith, Mathews, Nayar, Marsh, Kumar, Sharma, Dinda. They could go in for another specialist spinner like Rasool instead of either Suman/Pandey and get Uthappa to open instead ...

Posted by sk12 on (April 18, 2013, 3:53 GMT)

Balaji took the hattrick in 2008 against Kings XI Punjab, not against KKR. Please change.

Posted by Anushika on (April 18, 2013, 3:32 GMT)

I'm A Sri Lankan. Mathews went to same school I went and obviously I liked the guy very much when he 1st came to the international arena. It's a shame, but now I say, Please DROP Mathews immediately from the side. Take off his captaincy. He shouldn't play another single match for PWI if they are to make it to the top. I feel Mathews should be dropped from all form of cricket until he becomes a mature player and prove his abilities.

Posted by   on (April 18, 2013, 3:00 GMT)

all top three batted today must be rested. specially Patel. Everyone sees Sanga's fault coz he was highlighted as the captain. but he scored atleast 20+ in some difficult matches.Always experience, pressure handling and picking the ball matters. SRH need someone to bat through. like Sanga. Mishra should be promoted up the order.

What do you say? remove Perera? Nuts? he's been the best overseas player for SRH. he just need to explode at the end. he cannot bat for 5+ overs. His bowling is awesome. Top three should be replaced quickly + add sanga to the team back. give the captaincy to white and make sanga keeper.

Posted by GRVJPR on (April 18, 2013, 2:51 GMT)

Manish pandey is being wasted here. He should be opening the batting. Don't know what's going on. Too much overrating of foreign players.

Posted by uvkani on (April 18, 2013, 2:07 GMT)

1) poor decision made by pune management by handing coaching rights to allan donald because he dont know about local talents like parvez rasool, ishwar pandey, ekalavya dwivedi, shrikant wagh. Interestingly rahul sharma was dropped from north zone team to make way for parvez rasool in deodhar trophy but pune are neglecting him.

2)An indian should b made captain so that there is no restriction in dropping foreign players .

3)there is no point of giving chances to manish pandey who has 8 ducks to his credit and suman too.

4)strange that most experienced t20 player(luke wright 151 matches) is sitting on bench .

5)abhishek nayar can bowl better than mathews but they are not utilising him well.

kudos to pune management :- investing money is not important ,utilising among available resources is important.I think they will never change,so better to support some other team rather than pune.

Posted by Ajit_Gupta on (April 18, 2013, 0:32 GMT)

It was shameful to watch the coaching staff just watching and doing nothing while the yound Pune Warriors were throwing their bats and losing wickets in hurry while the required run rate was about run a ball with plenty of wickets in hands....the coaching staff should be nimble enough and should have agility to be quick on their feet and provide their able guidance to the young boys while such common sense is found missing...even a loss of few seconds in their moves may be disastrous......it is amazing that no one tried to stop the rot while the guys were comminting harakiri in front of the packed crowd at their home ground...so brazen it was.....The coaching staff is entirely responsible for this impossible debacle.....

Posted by CricketpunditUSA on (April 17, 2013, 23:44 GMT)

Great decision to keep Sanga in the bench. Can you believe this guy Matthews is leading an IPL side? The non Think-tank of PW should be taken to task!! Sammy should be in the side and lead... Taylor should be given a chance to lead as well. He is a better batsman. Aggree with VenkyN. The trouble is Angelo is leading an international side which had sensational stars in the past decade. Compare him to a Ranathunga or a De-silva or to an exten Mahela.

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (April 17, 2013, 23:42 GMT)

Pune Warriors seriously need to re-think their selection process. Why are they still continuing with Suman and Pandey? What have they done for their team so far? Why bench exceptional talent like Parvez Rasool?? They should learn from Sunrisers and Royals. Sunrisers played 2 spinners - and those spinners got most of the wickets. RR played unknown spinner Chandila, who quickly dispatched Tendulkar and Ponting. Rasool and Rahul Sharma bowling in tandem will be a great combination for PW. Plus Rasool is a good middle order batsman.

Posted by Dr.JK on (April 17, 2013, 23:00 GMT)

How can SRH drop Perera, when he is there top run scorer and wicket taker (joint with mishra)?

Posted by sunny_sani on (April 17, 2013, 22:59 GMT)

Sunrisers Hyderabad like pakistani team with good bowling attack and unpredictable batting :D

Posted by kaidranzer on (April 17, 2013, 21:51 GMT)

SRH are clearly making it a habit of winning games in freaky ways. What I think they need is a bit of firepower in their batting line-up. Bring in Dhawan and Sammy in place of DeCock and maybe Reddy, then they'll have explosive batsmen at the top and the middle order. The bowling line-up looks excellent, although I'm not sure how many times they'll win by just relying on their bowling.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 21:28 GMT)

SunRisers Hyderabad has the best bowling unit in the form of three wicket takers but they need good back up from their batting unit if they have to win the games more convincingly without have to depend on luck (like today). Parthiv Patel and Hanuma Vihari are proving to be slow players creating pressure on the middle order. Cameron White or Sangakkara should regularly open and provide a solid start. As Samantray has shown a cool head in this match, he should be given more opportunities as 2nd down instead of Vihari who is a very sluggish player suited for Test matches. He should be replaced by Akshath Reddy or Ravi Teja or some other youngster. Arrival of Shikhar Dhawan will make the SRH batting line-up much more strong and they can give consistent positive results in future matches.

plz drop mathews asap . he was out of last game and pune won in chennai against best ipl side. he is wastage on 1 foreign spot.

Posted by gsingh7 on (April 17, 2013, 21:04 GMT)

ipl is best in the world. look at indian talents as mishra gony praveen, vihari, rahane, who singlehandedly won games when foreign players failed. gony won the game on his own yesterday when azhar hussey gilly all failed. today mishra won the game when steyn was thrashed by opposition batsmen. some young talent in ndia needs a bit of polishing and we cud get best teams in all formats. also plz drop mathews from pune team as srh have done with sanga , they held some wonderful players as samuels and sammy down.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 17, 2013, 21:00 GMT)

We want Sammy ! how can you play a teenage opener that has barely played any cricket in Asia over Darren Sammy who brings a whole lot more to the side ? International experience, many finishing innings under pressure, bowling option, leadership e.t.c Dhawan and Sammy are needed for SRH to really compete their luck will run out sooner or later. DeCock has talent but he's far to inexperienced to be playing as an specialist batsman from 1 of your 4 overseas stars, today he looked like a complete rabbit in headlights and if Patel is keeping there is no need for him especially when Dhawan is back then add Sammy with Perrera White and Steyn ( 2 overseas stars should be allrounders with 1 bat 1 bowler ) for the best balance as allrounders win more t20 games.

Posted by NP_NY on (April 17, 2013, 20:44 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks: Here you go with your biased views again. Smith is overrated? He is the best player Pune's got! Angelo Matthews has lost it as a player and a captain! One match he sat out and Pune beat CSK! He comes back and they can't even score 120. Pune needed 13 off 11 balls which did not require Angelo to hit the ball in the air. But he had no clue about Mishra's bowling so he holed out. He just wasted Bhuvi's and Rahul Sharma's good bowling. They are the only ones who performed for Pune in this match.

Posted by kc69 on (April 17, 2013, 20:33 GMT)

lol...it looks like players like Parera and Senanayake are lot better than Mahela and Sanga...for T20 format

Posted by JG2704 on (April 17, 2013, 20:26 GMT)

I love these debates from fans who think this player should be in / this one out.

The thing is Pune have players like Samuels and Wright who are not playing (Wright has not been given a game yet) and HS have guys like Duminny , Mckay and Sammy on the bench so if overseas players are underperforming surely the talent on the benches are being wasted - however big a name they are

Posted by VenkyN on (April 17, 2013, 20:26 GMT)

Masterstroke from White to have Mishra operating that late. But what on earth was Angelo Matthews thinking ? With 14 off 12 required, and a half decent batsman in Manish Pandey at the other end, who would have expected him to go for glory and hole out like that ? In any case, he has been poor for Pune this season - he has made runs, yes, but not with any impact. He has been reasonable with the ball, yes, but again without making any kind of impact. And his captaincy has been unimaginative overall.

Posted by JG2704 on (April 17, 2013, 20:22 GMT)

@Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 15:21 GMT) Would that (Sanga) be the same player who in 5 matches has a highest score of 28 , has not gone over a SR of 100 in any match in this year's IPL and has an average just shy of 17?

Posted by JG2704 on (April 17, 2013, 20:22 GMT)

@Nampally on (April 17, 2013, 15:05 GMT) Truth is if IPL could generate the interest level without guys like Gayle,Pollard,Steyn,AB,Mallinga,KP etc then they wouldn't spend so much on their services don't you think?

Also I'm sure there are plenty of examples of teams winning purely because of their overseas contingent too.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 19:47 GMT)

Biplab Samantraey is theAngelo Mathews of Odeesha and he is the skipper of his state and he need more attention and respect that he proved today with the bat and he is capable with the ball too. His contribution with bat was significant in SRH's victory and For Pune Mathews need to show more responsiblity. With Manish Pandey as non-striker Mathews can easly finish the chase by taking singles in Amith Mishra over

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 19:47 GMT)

Sunrisers are 130-run team. They score 130 and defend 130. To win against the Sunrisers, the opposing team needs to score more than 130.

Posted by Rick777 on (April 17, 2013, 19:46 GMT)

@SurlySynic>Drop Thissara? What rubbish. He is the only player to perform consistently this season for SRH. Any player won't give you a 10 out of 10. So relax and watch the game and then see what kind of decisions should be taken.

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 17, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

....some of their personal views like under estimating foreign players and the greediness to show that only Indian players shine in IPL. And some sadly want to say every time targeting some foreign player that he doesnt play well than this local guy and he is better than him and blah blah.....then criticise overseas player and try to prove local one is best which is an impure attitude destroys the spirit of the game.So it should be stopped and may the best shine . 10 good matches and one duck does nt make a player named and bannered as a failed one as some fans name them.Good luck SRH they play as CSK like a team....Genuine team....So win is no suprize to me .And they are playing and mngmnt is managing players professionally like CSK. It is a good sign. You know by being professional CSk won 2 and runners up twice. So you are on a serious good journey SRH.

Posted by testcricket_lover on (April 17, 2013, 19:01 GMT)

It's a wise decision by Sanga. Definitely a great batsmen but not suited for this format. De kock should be in the playing 11 and patel should be replaced by Dhawan (fit). This should give more stability to the team at the top.

Posted by Slizzle on (April 17, 2013, 18:58 GMT)

SRH are terrible with the bat, it amazes me that their bowlers have been so excellent....usually the batsmen don't attack steyn upfront but today they did - I would prefer to see that more, it would allow him to take more wickets instead players blocking him out the whole time....excellent from Thisara and Mishra....I hope De Kock gets a few chances, he was in good form prior to the IPL.....

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 17, 2013, 18:52 GMT)

Perera was the most impact player of the match and through out the tournament for SRH .Today also if he wasnot there uthappa and finch will finish it 2 or 3 overs to spare...As you all see ishant and steyn were hammered and Only thisara (a genuine wicket taker ) delivered not only once but twice removing both openers. If one stayed more longer there will be no 19th over needed.Mishra gets MOM this match courtesy of his hat trick and 30 runs.He deserves that. But entire tournament SRH are in this position in the points table due to perera's frequent all round perfrmance. Some times he fails with bat then delivers with ball and when failed with ball delivers otherwise and sometimes as against Pune last time with both bat and ball.So he is irreplacable. And thinking replacing him with sammy is a joke !!!! Talking about In form and MATCH WINNING player resting is complete jealous nature and shows the reluctancy of accepting his contribution n loss of spirit of game by some fans to highl8 some

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 17, 2013, 18:46 GMT)

It is useless to talk about who is the most impact player for a team. Cricket is all about balancing the team and get out put from players defending on situation. Both Perera and Mishra and Styne had done equally well to the team. If we continue the same discussion SL don't have lot of icon players. Only perera and Malinga are there. On other side every one in the Indian team are icon players. But still SL performs well in T20 format but India doesn't. It is hard to believe how team like India unable to perform in 'T20' game. Still people believe t20 is a game of individual players. But seeing performance of SL team it is not correct. T20 is about balancing the team. Really sad to drop Sanga and take de cock. Instead Sanga should be replaced by experienced dumminy.

Posted by kevepere on (April 17, 2013, 18:36 GMT)

When Dhawan returns. hopefully he is in form after the injury. 1.Akshat Reddy, 2.de Cock/ Sanga (if de cock does nt perform), 3.Dhawan 4. White/Sammy 5.Patel , 6.Tishara Perera 7.B Samantray 8.Ashish Reddy / Karan Sharmay, 9.Amit Mishra, 10.Steyn 11.Ishant Sharma This is the best batting line up i can think of for SRH . Today Samantray showed that he can bat than the most other indian players. Akshath reddy got a good average

@Baseball-Sucks - LOL man I appreciate you for your die hard SL support. I was not talking about earlier matches. I always support players who do well. But it is you who don't. Did u ever see me criticising mahela or sanga even though people were targeting mahela for DD loss? You are just a die hard SL supporter and not an IPL team. You want all IPL teams that have SL playing to be on top. Also I don't care if Sharma or Steyn got hammered. This is t20. Everyone gets hammered. Atleast now you are getting some sense to say steyn got hammered otherwise you were only targeting Indian bowlers. Maybe u did not read all my comments against you in DD match otherwise some sense would have got into you. I always give credit to people who deserve. I never said perera did badly. I jus said Mishra performed with both ball and bat and top performer for SRH today. You said SL captains have worst Indians at their disposal so I wanted to remind you the star performer today was an indian. Plz publish.

@SL fans: My bad, I wanted to say - Thisara can be rested at some stage to see how Sammy fits-in for a couple of matches. Just to check the bench strength. Of course, Thisara is crucial to SRH. His decisive blows today brought SRH right back into the game.

Posted by Nehans on (April 17, 2013, 18:27 GMT)

Sangakara must rest now and captaincy should be taken over by Cameroon White as he did a great job, mathew should also do the sam, in the last match Pune were looking excellent but today again they look as hopeless as they were in first few games. Taylor is a match winner and can turn the game any day so he should keep on playing...this IPL is getting interesting as every team except for DD is capable of chalenging the other teams, no teams is a sure favorite or loser yet

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 18:26 GMT)

@priceless1 ; Are you serious ? McCullum isn't a strike bowler. But Perera is. He is on top of the list along with other leading wkt takers, taking 9 wkts. Not to mention his ability to clear boundaries. Perera is way better bowler n batsman than McCullum. He has proven it here in IPL as well as International arena. Be logical !!!

Posted by 22many on (April 17, 2013, 18:24 GMT)

Simple....Taylor in as captain and Mathews out....Luke Wright in for Marsh....he needs a rest. Pune need leadership and I was surprised they rested Taylor after leading the team to its win a couple of days ago. Overseas players....Finch, Taylor , Wright and Smith

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 18:16 GMT)

@Jamessmithee - Really felt bad when read "The bowling unit of SRH second only to MI". Seriously, Sun Risers Hyderabad has the best bowling attack in the IPL. Steyn better than Malinga. Perera better than Pollard. Ishant is a striker but not as good as Johnson. Amit Mishra better than Harbhajan. Well, Karam Sharma is not as good as Ojha. Ultiimately SRH have the better bowling attack.

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 17, 2013, 18:10 GMT)

Mishra was amazing during this IPL. He mixing the ball like great legend warne. He is bit old now. I think in t20 India should consider replacing Mishra for Jadeja. Jadeja individually good all rounder. But India team lost balance to keep too much icon players in the team. It was proven that icon players play only in some occasions. Sometime you needs less superior but much consistent players. India have one already. Thats MSD. Other than him there is no consistent players. Still dravid can replace for anyone in the team. LOL but it is the ugly truth.

Posted by KallisTheGreatest on (April 17, 2013, 18:08 GMT)

Steve Smith's inning was the turning point of last game as well as the today's game.Yes I too agree Perera is the impact player & unsung hero for Sunrisers since begining.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 18:03 GMT)

@elgenioroshan ; It is you who need to learn to give credits to those who deserve it most. Very first match, Perera took 3 wkts n scored 32 in 17 balls. He was the match winner. But MoM was not given to him. Later he scored 40+. Today if it hadn't been for Perera, there wouldn't have been a 19th over for Mishra to bowl. Your Sharma n Steyn got hammered all over the park. Then Perera came took both opening batsmen. Otherwise game would have finished in 15 overs. So.... Give credits to those who deserve irrespective of their nation.

Posted by priceless1 on (April 17, 2013, 18:03 GMT)

Problem with SRH is that they have so many all rounders , how about giving Mc Cullam a go in the next game instead of Perera ? he is a better all rounder than Sammy and Perera

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 17, 2013, 18:02 GMT)

Congratulations to SRH once again. A low budget team with plenty of belief in them self. When other teams loosing many matches when the match in their hands and supposed to win comfortably, but where as SRH has grasped every opportunity with both hands. Thanks to Mr. Sanga for giving opportunity to others. Excellent captaincy of Cameron White. Some people said that Only Sanga can win low total matches.. haha.. thats not true. White is an excellent captain. Parera is playing well with the bat and ball, but more consistency will definitely help SRH. De Kock is very aggressive, and SRH need such persons badly, Single handedly he might won SRH at least 2 or 3 out of 9 matches and that's good enough from him. All the best for SRH.

If Mathews want to play anchor role he should come at number 4. You can't come at number 6 and rotate strick until you see how tail get nailed. Finch , Robin is good combination UV/Pandey(if UV injured) come next, then the captain (mathews/Taylor), smith, marsh ,... There are plenty of hitters but no one there to anchor the inning.

@Baseball-Sucks and all SL Fans - What happen to you guys now? Not blaming the indian bowlers because Mishra was incredible. You guys were talking a lot in the RCB vs. DD match saying DD loss was due to "mediocre" Indian Bowlers. You guys only support SL players that play In the team but never the team as a whole. That is very biased from you all. It was not your SL Perera that won the match but Mishra who has been consistent through out. Now atleast I hope you guys wont blabber about Indian bowling and treat the game in true sportsman spirit. Give credit to those who deserve irrespective of their nation. Cricinfo plz publish

These ppl are talking abt dropping Perera for Sammy. U guys nuts? Who started the PWI collapse today? Is it u guys so called Sammy or Perera? And so called hero de Cock only managed to score 2 runs. If Sanga was there, he could have scored at least 15-20 runs. Now SH needs a steady middle order. They have hitters in their line up. And Moody knows about Sanga and Perera more than anyone who have commented here.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 17, 2013, 17:34 GMT)

Abhishek Nayar: To think that this guy was once considered and Indian prospect! Totally useless with both bat and ball..An allrounder of not even the bits and pieces variety. How on earth did they spend so much on him?

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 17, 2013, 17:33 GMT)

I don't think sammy will get a chance. People must calculate weakness and strength of the SRH team. Bowling unit of SRH only second to MI. But they are very much weak in Batting. Only way Sammy can come to the team is replacing Styne. Styne is the number one bowler in Test cricket. I agree Sammy may be a better bowler than perera but Perera is a far better batsmen and one of the best finishers in the limited over matches. He is very much able be in the wicket as he is able to hit sixes. If I was SRH coach I won't give a chance to kock to replace sanga. Duminy should be the second choice. Ideally they should have AB for White. AB is the number one batsmen in the world. I haven't seen such a player who can adjusted to any pitch within few seconds.

Posted by SL_legacy on (April 17, 2013, 17:32 GMT)

@Dravid_Gravitas... seriously what Thisara has done wrong so far? picking up wickets @ crucial times? adding a quick fire 20-30 to the score? some fine fielding? What has Sammy done for WI... yes he was the captain of WT20s... but keep in mind, in the back of that tournament, he led the team to a disastrous tour in Bangladesh as well as AUS... (http://www.espncricinfo.com/westindies/content/team/4.html?template=results). use this link, if u have have doubt. you need an inconsistent player like Sammy to replace ever promising Perera??? u gotta be full time kidding me mate!!! Tough luck for Pune, should have grabbed the chance on this. Can not understand why you want to change Tissara to Sammy ? #$ ? Tissara is a much better player than Sammy, even he took 3 wickets.

I do like to see more input about the pitch report and how the author thinks about it behaved during the match in the Report (Article )

Posted by Ahgg on (April 17, 2013, 17:24 GMT)

Agree with Lijabinu although am a Sri Lankan none of them are good enough in t20 except malinga and to some extent thisara. Mahela is good but he has forgotten how to bat. Sanga is a good captain but don't know how to bat in this format. Matthews is out of form and his captaincy is pretty weak. This is why sl should replace the current crop and replace them with young sl talent. I know we are the current number one team but sadly individually these guys are pretty pathetic to see!!!

@ Dravid_Gravitas, as a indian get me a sample, be cool man, WHY PERERA HAS TO REPLACE ??? 1st match he won as a single handle but mishra was the man of the match, RCB match he was the highest scorer, look this match, he was the game changer, I think HE IS THE IMPACT PLAYER IN THIS TEAM. styne & perera should always in the team.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 17:05 GMT)

@ Dravid_Gravitas ; You wanna replace the 2nd highest wkt taker (9 wickets), Perera with Sammy ? not to mention what did with the bat in previous games. lol. He was the man who turned the things around with the ball when Steyn n Sharma got hammered all over the park. Doesn't matter.. scream all you want. Nobody cares what you say. lol

adding my prv comment , SRH need only 140 to beat a side, now they're more powerful with new legi, @ RAJESRH, every team needed at least 5 batsman, you never know about all rounders wll sometimes get runs sometimes fail, styne, ishant, perera, mishra & new sharma is enough, SRH need more batting .

Now that Sanga has chosen to sit-out (the gentleman that he is, nothing less will be expected from him), the other change that SRH should make is to bring-in Sammy for Thisara; when Dhawan comes-in, SRH is all set.

Just hope the PWI management have seen the difference...

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 16:45 GMT)

I think Sanga didn't play the game as he'll have to sit out next game in chennai and his replacement (which happened to be de Kock) had to have match exposure before taking on chennai at their home. Sanga was NOT dropped, just that De Kock is NO Steve Smith who came in and turned the chennai match on it's head and even won MOM.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 16:43 GMT)

I dont get why people are calling for sanga to be part of the 4 overseas selection. He just isnt that good, no one is asking him to hit 6s. He can play his natural game and score 20-30 runs each game at 110-120SR & help the team like in delhi game where he scored 28 off 28. Will you say that he cannot get singles & put bad balls away for runs? The team reminds me of DC first 3 years, where 3 overseas slots were filled by gilchrist, symonds, harris. Almost same now, hard to drop sanga as he is captain even if he underperforms, steyn is the best bowler on the team, perera & white have contributed well(only players on SRH with 100+runs). Even if sanga doesnt win matches he can still score & keep the team in the match. Thats all people ask otherwise it would be good to give other foreigner players a chance instead of paying and benching them entire tournament like mumbai.

Still trying to digest the result, and cursing self for giving up on Hyd. After Hyd's final score of 119, and a blazing start by PWI openers, I thought a defeat is inevitable, and went on with my work. Few hours later, I am pleased and pleasantly surprised to see SRH winning the match. Any off-day by the SRH bowlers, and a defeat is inevitable, it looks like. A blazing start and a decent total to defend, and SRH will be a force to reckon. If only I get a rupee for every one of my wish granted, I would have been a millionaire!!

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 16:29 GMT)

it was perera who started the pressure by picking up the openers in two consecutive delivers at that time pune was going like all guns blazing - Mishra added icing to cake by picking up four in one over - pune needs them selve to blame for this poor performances - POOR PUNE

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 16:28 GMT)

@BRUTALANALYST , Come on man.. Didn't you see that there were no any recognize batsmen at end, so Mathews couldn't risk it by taking singles with tailenders. Remember what happened in previous game with SRH ? So Mathews had to go for it n eventually he did. It was the careless batting of overrated Smith (pewh) n Marsh cost PWI the match.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 17, 2013, 16:28 GMT)

@Manojin: I'm not calling for Perera to be replaced by Sammy in Chennai because of 'hate', I think Perera is doing well! If you remember, Sri Lankan players can not play in Chennai so this was my suggestion for that game. Seriously man, calm down a bit this is just a game.

Posted by abcdef_12345 on (April 17, 2013, 16:23 GMT)

SurlyCynic Yes, but unfortunately, Mahela was sold for 1.4 Million, Sangakara and Mathews for 900000.While Shakib was sold for 400000 and Tamim only 50000.Pune loosed almost all matches yet Tamim did not get a game. Were our complains unfair?

Posted by TNAmarkFromIndia on (April 17, 2013, 16:17 GMT)

It's obvious that Pune's long batting line-up strategy is failing miserably. Both Mathews and Marsh are "jack of all trades, master of none" kind of players. They'll do a decent job with both and bat and ball but they're not really great with either. First, they let the pressure off the Sunrisers with their bowling in the middle overs (that's 8 overs worth), taking just a solitary wicket between them. Sunrisers were able to get to a fighting total because Pune lacked quality bowlers to keep the pressure on them. They've only got 3 regular bowlers which is ridiculous. Then in their batting, both made a mess of what seemed like a fairly simply chase and threw away their wickets. You simply cannot have both Marsh and Mathews in the team. You need another batsman at the top like Luke Wright. Get either one of T. Suman or Manish Pandey out and get another bowler like Parvez Rasool or Ishwar Pandey.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 16:16 GMT)

Pack of all Sri Lankan players, they are not suitable for T20 format except Malinga....

Posted by JamesSmithee on (April 17, 2013, 16:14 GMT)

Sunrises goes with Misra, Perera, Styne performance. Both Sanaga and white are proven bad captains. But Sanga is world class batsmen with lot of experience. Why SRH don't like to rest a hitter to have a world class batsmen who can play the anchor role while SRH don't having any in the team. Any team in the world is very much happy to have him in the team when chasing bellow 150. When target is above 150 it will be a job of other 10 hitters. Definitely sanga wont able to provide that. Both occasions that SRH lost opposite team had scored above 160. Bad team sprit from SRH. They don't understand roles, capabilities and responsibilities of different players. Now SRH dropped Sanga since other unable to deliver what is expected from them. Sanga is a good team player. When they chasing 180 I saw he was trying to be aggressive to win the match despite his capabilities and possible blames while hitters wasted lot of balls at the beginning. Sanga knew it is the only way to win the match.

Posted by AneYako on (April 17, 2013, 16:13 GMT)

man some of you really do love blaming the captain when the whole team failed! Do tell how was Mathews supposed to make the other batsman play better? I mean people were singing praises for smith the previous game but look at him now. And Ross Taylor is not a good captain. His years at NZ should tell you that.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 17, 2013, 16:12 GMT)

Last season we had Bangladesh fans calling for Shakib and Tamim every week. Seems like this year the comments are flooded with Sri Lankans complaining if any Sri Lankan player doesn't play! Try to be objective guys, when last did Sanga play a 50+ IPL innings? He isn't a big hitter, so surely he should at least be consistent getting regular good scores at a low strike rate?

Posted by MichaelBurton on (April 17, 2013, 16:09 GMT)

@SurlyCynic: Perera was the one who turned the game. Why do you want to call Sammy for him. Just hate?

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 17, 2013, 16:05 GMT)

@ Baseball-Sucks Come n man it was run a ball with 2 overs left and Mathews tried to hit a 6 over one of the only outfielders terrible call which ultimately lost his side the game.

Posted by sandy_bangalore on (April 17, 2013, 16:05 GMT)

Abhishek Nayar must be the worst allrounder playing cricket currently. He could not handle a short ball froma trundler like Thisara perera! ANd his bowling is an absolute joke, even at Ranji level. And to think he is among the highest paid Indians in the IPL. Really hope they terminate his contract and he gets back to playing grade cricket or whatever.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 15:55 GMT)

The problem with Sunrisers batting from the start has been 2 reasons...the inexperienced Indian batsmen and Moody's obsession to get White in the team ahead of Sanga. He first pushed sanga down the order to bat at 5 - so that White can bat before the spinners come on and then even got white to open in the last match which was a disaster. Sanga's scores this year so far are as bad as White but White has been batting ahead of him and getting more time at the crease. Whites Scores so far 10, 5, 52, 4,34 and 0..otherthan the 52 where after a very slow start he hit out he has been batting at a strike rate of less than 100..Sanga looked good in the Delhi game scored only 28 in that low scoring match but looked real good..where as white threw away his wicket for which he got rewarded by being asked open..chasing 180 he scored 34 at a run a ball.I am sure Moody will continue to play him still- waiting to see White Struggle against Ashwin and Jadeja..no hiding from that White/Moody

Posted by sameer_warun on (April 17, 2013, 15:54 GMT)

I think Srilankan players in lot of pressure, their faces show it , they're not smiling at all, they're not in normal mood, even after won the match sanga's face like he lost it, remember all srilankan's ask not to go to IPL, but they're here to play the game, we must appreciate it & we have to support them !

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 17, 2013, 15:54 GMT)

If Kusal Janith is dropped because he hadn't scored a lot then similarly the same must apply to de kock. Both were in good form. @Baseball-Sucks; Please convince these people that Sanga's batting avgs improve when he is keeping than when he is not.

The Pune Match should have been finished off earlier. Smith, Marsh,Suman looked toothless against spin while they should have gone berserk and whacked the fast bowlers and the inexperienced leggie. Shorter the chase the aggresive and positive you should look to be.

Posted by SamAsh07 on (April 17, 2013, 15:54 GMT)

I thought the match was over at around 72/3 or something, had a class so had to close TV and go attend my class, after I came back home I fired up my mobile expecting to see "PWI beat Sunrisers by 5-6 wickets" however, when I read the name Sunrisers first I thought I was hallucinating and checked the scorecard to confirm what I read. Mishra you beauty! Pity I missed that hat-trick! I know I can watch the highlights later but nothing beats watching a hat-trick LIVE on TV or in the stadium itself.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 17, 2013, 15:48 GMT)

Mathews had to wait at non-strikers end for 9 deliveries n watch 2 wkts go down. Nobody was interested in singles, but wanted to go for the glory. It was almost like Deja Vu from the previous PW-SRH meeting. When Mathews finally got to the strikers end, he had no choice but go for big shots coz 6wkts had already been down. Unfortunate thing it was that he got the top edge. PWI lost due to the immature performance from overrated Smith (who apparently can't make it to the Aussie T20 XI ) n Marsh. All they had do was, push it around take singles n wait for bad balls coz that time PW were on the top. But for them it was all about the glory.

Posted by AdhilM on (April 17, 2013, 15:47 GMT)

I think Sangakkara would do better opening the batting with Parthiv Patel. Cameron White should bat at 4 and Perera at 5 or 6 depending on the situation... Sangakkara should try to bat through at a decent strike rate (115-120)... the rest should go after the bowling... I think Vihari or Samantray can take over Sangakkara's role as anchor in case he gets out.

I didn't have too much hope for the Sunrisers when the tournament began... it looks like the same side with a new name and outfit to go with it. However, they have been beating the odds with some amazing bowling performances (with some help from their opponents, of course). Suddenly, they look like they could give some of the bigger names a run for their money... Good Luck SRH!!!!

@Tal_Botvinnik : Sanga has had 5 chances and didn't succeed in any of them. But you want him brought back because De Kock didn't succeed in his one chance? This doesn't make sense, even if you are a SL supporter. Sanga had to be dropped last year too because he kept failing, he is not a T20 player.

Anyone can fail in T20, Finch took his first chance and his next innings was a first-baller. But when someone has had 5 chances like Sanga and doesn't perform it's time to look to other players.

Posted by Crictankerous on (April 17, 2013, 15:28 GMT)

Anyone know why Sanga isn't playing? Hyderabad need him in their batting!

Posted by ThilankaK on (April 17, 2013, 15:26 GMT)

Don't blame mathews, he is the one who restrict SRH to 119, under his captaincy, but when it come to batting nothing he can't do when batsman like smith, mash & others play rash shorts, look same thing happen to day like 1st game, pandy was in none striker 9,10,11, can't get singles . look mathews can't play freely when wickets tumbling on other side, he drag it to last two overs like Dhoni , mishra's over he has to fire but got out, this is what cricket is all about, If some one said de cock can replace sanga, sorry to say he doesn't know anything about cricket. even Siddhu, Sunil gavaskar, arje jadeja said on their commentary that is wrong decision, do you people know better cricket than them??? some one comment perera should replace by sammy ,ha ha haa, he must be blind & deaf, both openers & abeshek's wicket took by perera, he was the starter. I DON'T KNOW YOU PEOPLE WHAT IS TALKING ???

Hard to believe that every game is turning out to be a last ball finish. Working out very well for the sponsors. Audiences are stuck to their seats as the matches are not one sided. The teams are also playing their full quota of overs. So no overs lost for the advertisements. And as if that were not enough wickets tumble in heaps. Almost every game you see full quota of overs bowled, most of the 20 wickets fall and every match is a cliff hanger. Even indian movies don't come with such spectacular scripts. Kudos to the organizers. But one thing is certain. CSK will raise from the ashes and some how reach the finals at least. No prize for guessing how they manage it every time.

It funny how they praise Mishra but forget Perera. If It hadn't been for Perera, there wouldn't have been a 19th over for Mishra to bowl. PW were flying ( and Steyn n Sharma were getting hammered all over the park ) before Perera changed the course of the game by taking both opening batsmen(later another wkt). Yet, There is a full column on how Perera got out (2nd page) but no mention about that useless White. SRH got lucky today. Sanga has to come n get rid of White to give the stability to the middle order.

This Season of IPL...Team's getting more matured...Every match is unpredictable reaching till the final over and all are a nail biting finisher. Kudos to all cricketers....Awesome Entertainment

K Sangakkarra needs to get back into the team, Pune's poor performance curtained SRH's batting lapses,If A Finch can grab his oppoturnity why can't a (in-form(as they say)) de Kock take his? C White may have captained the side well but his batting is on the decline during the last matches scoring less than sanga.Well Sanga needs to open and KEEP (He is a better batsmen when he keeps). I Say Get Duminy for White and give Kock one more chance.

Posted by Winsome on (April 17, 2013, 15:17 GMT)

What can be done about Pune? That was such a shambles. It was bloody funny to watch in a painful sort of way. Drop Marsh, he doesn't hold his nerve, but then none of them seem to under the cosh.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 17, 2013, 15:17 GMT)

@Nampally: It doesn't make sense to generalise and go 'all foreign players are good' or 'all local players are good' based on one game. There have been many games this season where foreign players have played well and they make the league more interesting and international. If Jadeja is worth millions then aren't players like AB De Villiers, Gayle and Pollard worth what they are paid?

Strange comment.

It is near universal opinion that last year's IPL was the most entertaining one and the closest of all IPL seasons. I guess this year's IPL has already been more entertaining and even closer than last year's whole season. Who says T20 is a lesser format? Who says T20 is a tamasha? Those who say this should get their eyes corrected and their brain revived. Cricket was already a game of glorious uncertainties and T20 only reinforces this belief. In fact, one should say that a T20 match is CERTAIN to have UNCERTAINTIES. The last three IPL matches have been totally mind blowing ones. On each of these occasions, I was about to walk off after the 12th-13th over thinking it was over but somehow stayed out and was rubbing my eyes when I saw the drama that unfolded in these three matches

And I am not even talking about what SIR JADEJA did in THAT match when he had to score 2 runs off 1 ball and he got caught off that 1 ball but still won the match with 1 ball to spare.

What a Team work by SunRisers? First they were down 44 for 6 in 10.4 overs. They fought back doggedly to reach 119- scoring 85 runs in 9 overs. The 3 professional players White Q De Kock, White & Perera scored just 6 runs between them whilst Samantray, Mishra & Ashish Reddy got 86 between 3 of them at a S/R of nearly 9/over. Then with defeat staring at them like stag caught under the full beam lights, they fought back once more. This time Pune tumbled from 107 for 6 to 108 all out! Mishra once again got 4 wkts in one over including a hat trick! Determined home grown talent is needed instead of overpaid & under performing foreign players. The 2 foreign players Steyn & Perera got 4 wkts. between them & 3 foreign batsmen added just 6 runs to the total. Despite this, Sun rises for the Hyderabad because the local players are fighting to win. It is time for IPL teams to award foreign players a base salary of say $ 100K+ performance based bonus - instead of lump sum of up to $ 2 Million!

Steyn's pride took a beating today. Whenever he gets a bit of tap he gets angry and invariably bowls quicker which explains why he bowled that 149kph ball to have Marsh caught of the pull. Great fight by SRH and Mishra really stole the game away from Pune. But the batting is still a worry, hopefully de Kock will be persevered with, and Sanga can watch from the bench for a couple of matches. All in all great bowling effort from Pune teams but even better one by SRH. Could they be the darkhorses?

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 17, 2013, 15:01 GMT)

We want Sammy ! how can you play a teenage opener that has barely played any cricket in Asia over Darren Sammy who brings a whole lot more to a side ? International experience, many finishing innings under pressure, bowling option, leadership e.t.c Dhawan and Sammy are needed for SRH to really compete their luck will run out sooner or later. DeCock has talent but he's far to inexperienced to be playing as an specialist batsman from 1 of your 4 overseas stars, today he looked like a complete rabbit in headlights.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 15:00 GMT)

Well why does Sanga have to pay the price? Both White and Sanga were failures in terms of batting. Notwithstanding today's win, Sanga is a better captain than White IMO and humble enough to step down. I remember Gilly playing all the matches of S03 for DC despite struggling to get to double figures in most of them.

in this team can methuz explain the roll of suman and panday. manish panday is an opening batsman and he is giving chance at 6-7 so how can you expext he can do well there becoze he is not a power hitter and suman toatlly westage i think any bowler can include in place of suman so atleast you have a bowler who can bowl 3 or 4 overs whrn needed. one more thing the home wicket of pune is somewhat bowlers friendly so improve your bowling and then attack with best bowlers like bhuvneshwar, dinda, rahul sharma and rasool can be a mistry here for other teams like narine or senanayke

its the time for think tank to planning for rest of session otherwise be ready for again bottem place in the table . if they plan very well like sunrisers today's bowwlingbest of luck

Stunning performance from pune. every one shocked with this performance of PWI.congratulations to methuz to back in the team at the cost of ross taler. where is pune managment drop methuz immediatly and even releave from the team right now, he donot deserve place in the tean at the cost of smith or taler or specially with luke wright. the most priceous player of the pune is luke wright after the yuvi, bhuvi and snith and he is still on the bench. finch is good but he is not a consisitent player at the top order and pune need a consisitent player at the top when uthppa is not in good form and the best choice is LUKE WRIGHT and bonus is he can bowl well and even as like methuz and when samles is fit replace him with marsh because samules has a killer instict and most importent thing pune lacking the X-FACTOR, and only yuvraj ,samules and smith and luke wrught can provide that killer intict to the team. so rebuild the tean around yuvi, bhuvi, smith, luke wright and rahul and dinda.

mishra doing a brilliant job. But white also did an excellent job. His statement at presentation that he said its not good in small chase to save your best bowlers till last. Brilliant thought and show a great captaincy.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 14:40 GMT)

fantastic Mishra! Pune had dug their own grave and Mishra just pushed them in it!!

Posted by kc69 on (April 17, 2013, 14:39 GMT)

I guess we may doubt the batting of Sunrisers but as a bowling unit they are the best in the tournament, well balanced bowling combinations that can defend any total under even slightly favourable conditions.

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 14:36 GMT)

this failures are heart breaking... swap the captaincy from mathews to ross taylor

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

we want ross taylor back as captain who won a match as captain and mathews as an all rounder who lost all games when he led the team... hope yuvi will be back in action..

Posted by   on (April 17, 2013, 14:34 GMT)

See this is why PWI is struggling, Mathews has been a waste as a player let alone as a Captain. You get a win after many losses and you remove your winning Captain from the side! Without Yuvi, their middle order is their biggest weakness, they failed to put up huge total against CSK after getting a flying start and same thing happened today. P.S. Get rid of that whatever Marsh ALREADY!

Posted by harish247 on (April 17, 2013, 14:32 GMT)

bowling is keep on succeding and batting is keep on failing.this is saying that t20 is not only for batsmen.

Posted by AdhilM on (April 17, 2013, 14:27 GMT)

It's amazing how Pune found ways of not making it to the target :D... I'm a Sunrisers fan so I can't complain... but it's hard to see the team I support improving when the opposition they come across don't make them pay for their mistakes. Anyway, well done Mishra!!!

This is the reason why Dhoni prefers to stay till the end (not throw away his wicket) and takes the game to the last or 2nd last over. Had KKR, RCB & PWI followed Dhoni's approach of finishing the game (while chasing), they would have won convincingly. Although RCB won yesterday but they really made hell of the match by taking it to the superover.
