Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)

Big picture

When they clash on Sunday night, Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors will be looking to shake off their inability to shut out games, and an inconsistency to carry forward a winning momentum, which has placed both teams in the bottom half of the points table. For Kings XI, their batting has been a let-down, with the experienced batsmen failing to shoulder the responsibility of guiding an innings. Their performance can be evidenced from one telling statistic: after five matches, none of their batsmen have scored a half-century. It's a record they will be eager to erase. They will be buoyed by the arrival of Shaun Marsh, possibly Kings XI's most valuable player. In 42 IPL matches for Kings XI, Marsh has scored 1603 runs at an average of 45.80 and a strike-rate of 135.96 and, with his fitness issues behind him, should be an automatic pick for the game, as Kings XI try to get past their batting woes against a good bowling attack.

Pune have been patchy so far, following up a stunning victory against Chennai Super Kings with mediocre batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With the chase against Sunrisers under control, the Warriors batsmen, including Angelo Mathews, played some inexplicable shots to find themselves on the losing side and the middle order, in particular, needs to return to sensible cricket and back their top order better. Their next few fixtures are against top-billing teams and a win against Kings XI could help them gain some confidence going ahead.

Players to watch

One of T20 cricket's journeymen, Azhar Mahmood has emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker for Kings XI so far after Praveen Kumar. It's his batting, though, that Kings XI will need if they are to challenge Pune Warriors. He has scored 35 runs in four innings so far.

With his effective swing bowling, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been the leading strike bowler for Warriors, providing breakthroughs at the start of the innings. This season, he has picked up seven wickets at an economy-rate of 6.00 and has also impressed with his tactical nous while opening the bowling.

Stats and trivia

  • In the five matches between the two teams, Warriors have won three times, while Kings XI have won twice.
  • David Hussey is joint-second in the list of batsmen to score most ducks in Twenty20 cricket. Hussey has 14 ducks from 195 innings, behind Herschelle Gibbs (23 from 161)

Quotes

"There are still plenty of matches to go this season. So, everyone in the team has to back each other moving ahead and pray for the best."
Warriors' Bhuvneshwar Kumar

PWI have made good 2 changes as i wanted. They have got the foreign players quota right. But they have missed the trick by not including Parvez and Ishwar. The fascination with Dinda is surprising. @Sigma-Eleven : Thanks!!

Poor decision by PWI...Angelo is a Good Captain & Good All rounder.

Posted by Salluoo7 on (April 21, 2013, 9:59 GMT)

Azhar mehmmod should be a chance up the order at batting. Batting at no 3 suits him

Posted by Nehans on (April 21, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

Azhar Mahmood should bat higher in the order and must come as first replacement in bowling as well, else Punjab is just relying other teams to perform badly in a day to help register a win

Posted by Nike_007 on (April 21, 2013, 9:16 GMT)

Both teams are playing badly. KXIP and PWI, both are shaky. I predict that if KXIP bats first then it would be a low scoring match.

Tal_Botvinnik it's not the bowling that is costing Pune, it's the batting.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 21, 2013, 4:42 GMT)

Its unbelievable that the world t20i 2012 top wicket taker and a bowler with 6/8, 6/16 benched.

Posted by Slesh on (April 21, 2013, 3:33 GMT)

@viru-319-219 fully agree with you. Mathews definitely should come up the order.at no 3 not lower than that! he is simply useles at no 7 or 8. but they need a good no7 batsmen. it should be either suman/pandey/manhas depending on their ability to hit hard at the death overs. and whats the use of benching Mendis? undoubtedly he is one of the best t20 bowlers. Go Pune!!

Posted by Aravinkumar on (April 21, 2013, 3:18 GMT)

My team for todays game would be

PWI: Uthappa, Finch, Suman, Smith, Taylor, Luke Wright, Rasool, Yuvi (C), Kumar, R Sharma, Ishwar Pandey.

KXI: Mandeep, Vohra, Gilly, Pomers, Hussey, Sathish, Chawla, Azhar, Awana, Gony, P Kumar.

Kings XI have brighter chance with the bat with the return of Marsh. The batting is strengthened. Warriors have been patchy as u said. Expect this to be a tough game with Punjab just edging out Pune

Posted by era89 on (April 21, 2013, 2:05 GMT)

@ Sinhaya i am sri lankan and are you mad to say Tharanga instead of Uththappa...we all know tharanga is not a good T2o cricketer... and Luke Wright and Ajantha mendis are... so why not pune try them... ajantha mendis in international T2os .. MAT29 R643 wick56 best6/8 Average11.48 ECon5.84 Stri rate11.7...no one has such a record isnt it? He may be not a good Test bowler but certainly a great one in shorter formats.. same as Narian... Pune must try both of them... And please DRop Dinda... he is cluless... tring to bowl full everytime ending with overpitching and providing width...

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 1:51 GMT)

Pune should drop Matthews first up. He has not been performing either with ball and bat. He is a perfect all rounder, a round zero in all of it. He has been a pretty average captain as well. I think they should try the following combination atleast once: Finch, Uthappa, Wright, Yuvraj as captain, Smith, Nayar/Manhas/Manish, Rasool, Bhuvaneshwar, Rahul sharma, Ishwar Pandey, Marsh/Mendis (depending on the pitch) Wright can be a decent medium pacer to accompany Bhuvi and Ishwar upfront. Rasool Rahul in spin along with yuvi himself and depending on the pitch, Mendis if picked could lead the spin department. Otherwise marsh has been good as a medium pacer.

Posted by   on (April 20, 2013, 22:58 GMT)

Sack Angelo. Allan Donald needs to makr this call to gain respect as a coach, otherwise sack him as well. Mediocrity is no longer acceptable.

Posted by Sigma-Eleven on (April 20, 2013, 21:48 GMT)

Fully agree with SachinRao

Posted by Winsome on (April 20, 2013, 21:03 GMT)

Pune must bring in Wright or Mendis, it's crazy to keep decent players who play international cricket on the sideline.

Posted by Rui_XI on (April 20, 2013, 20:15 GMT)

Sinhya wants all the Srilankan players to play in every team at expense of Indian players... this is IPL not SPL.. For Pune, Tharanga in place of Utthapa (whom he wants dropped).. Angelo himself is a liability for Pune

and for MI vs DD - Quoting him "Might sound weird but i wud recommend signing Prasanna Jayawardane and Suranga lakmal in place of Dinesh karthick and Mitchell johnson. Malinga lakmal will impose fear on any local indian batsmen"

Are you kidding me? You want Dinesh Karthik to be replaced? Our best batsman at present.. Please don't watch IPL if you want to post such foolish posts... wait for the Sri Lankan Premiere League

Posted by viru-319-219 on (April 20, 2013, 20:10 GMT)

@Sinhya... PWI is IPL team not lankan buddy and uthappa is far better than taranga and also its mathews who started collapse in mishra's over.

Pune are just trying to accomodate allrounders in team. Thet should bring in Mendis who still is a mystery for domestic playerd by dropping marsh, they also need to get their batting order right. Manhas is an experienced player and can adopt to situations so he is better choice than one of suman and pandey.

XI with batting order should be 1. Finch,2.Uthappa,3.Mathews,4.Yuvraj,5.Smith,6.Nayar,7.Manhas,8.Bhuvi,9.Rahul,10.Mendis,11.Dinda

Mathews is a good bat he can attack as well anchor the innings, too mant wickets early nayar can move up the order. This team bats till 8 and has 3 pace options with nayar as back up and 2 spin options with yuvraj as backup(He's full time bowler now but with back problems i consider him as backup)

Posted by   on (April 20, 2013, 19:55 GMT)

still i don't understand why Parvez & Ishwar Pandey not included in team? Parvez can bowl and bat well. He proved already. I think they don't want win any match.

Posted by SachinRao on (April 20, 2013, 19:37 GMT)

PWI shd play Finch,Smith,Luke, & Mendis / Kane depending on the wicket. Parvez & Ishwar Pandey shd come in for Pandey & Dinda. They have to go for broke, look beyond reputations. Kings XI can only hope and pray for Marsh to play. It was surprising to see Miller play ahead of Luke or even Mascarenhas for that matter. Sandeep Sharma is a talent wasted on the bench.

Posted by ramonster on (April 20, 2013, 19:17 GMT)

Shaun marsh won't be playing for kxip in this match, Gilly said so in the post-match conference after the SRH game because he will take time to acclimatise after only arriving in India today. Kxip should still win though, they Gilly took apart Kumar last time they left, hopefully he can find some more form with the bat. But KXIP still need a solid No.3. And they stil haven't found a replacement for Marsh. I believe they should bring in last years Gilly's replacement Nitin Saini at no. 3, or leave Valthaty up at No.3 and hope he finds some form in the very same pitch he scored a blistering and unforgettable Century .

Posted by Htc-Baseball on (April 20, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

Mathews being the captain of the team must try and bring in Upul tharanga to partner finch at the top. Uthappa must be dropped. This combination of tharanga ,mathews and mendis can help Pune win IPL.

Posted by TNAmarkFromIndia on (April 20, 2013, 19:00 GMT)

The Pune Warriors should bring in Luke Wright to bat at No. 3. Wright has the ability to score some good 30's and 40's at a good click, and if he is able to do that, then the Pune Warriors will have a solid batting line-up. The return of Yuvraj Singh will also help them no doubt. Also, drop the No. 8 batsman (either Suman or Pandey) and bring in Parvez Rasool. They need a 4th regular bowler. They've only been depending upon Dinda, Bhuvneshwar and Rahul Sharma which is a mistake.
