Luke Wright went from hero to villain in the space of 100 minutes. His cameo of 34 off 10 balls helped Pune Warriors post 185, but in the face of an assault from David Miller and sensible support from Mandeep Singh, Wright blinked and failed to defend 15 in the last over. Miller finished it off with two lethal sixes, but don't forget how Mandeep kept running back to the danger end to keep Miller on strike.

Both stayed unbeaten, Miller on 80 off 41 and Mandeep on 77 off 58. Mandeep's was the first fifty for any Kings XI Punjab batsman this IPL.

The fielding all around was poor, but the batting and bowling towards the end were high quality under pressure, in sharp contrast to some of the inexplicable thrillers earlier in the tournament. Despite a patchy appearance, this was a true surface where the ball came on, and it made for good stroke-play. Both Mandeep and Miller needed that in abundance after Kings XI had been 5 for 2 in the chase of 186, a result of shoddy fielding and bowling from Kings XI.

Adam Gilchrist dropped a sitter from Warriors' third captain of the season, Aaron Finch, and saw him add 63 more off 38. Misfields from Kings XI punctuated the rest of the innings, and they added length bowling in the end to their list of mistakes. First Yuvraj Singh, and then, sensationally, Wright took full toll of that. Wright hit the first six balls he faced for fours. Five of them were poorly pitched, and the sixth, a yorker, poorly fielded.

Gilchrist's horror day continued when he edged a cut in the first over. Ajantha Mendis, another one of Warriors' inclusions, worked immediately as he got an lbw verdict against Azhar Mahmood with the first ball he bowled. However, Mandeep and Manan Vohra, two of the Kings XI's young Indian batsmen, started brightly, and the way they timed the ball, you knew it wasn't going to be a stroll for Warriors.

Yuvraj came on to break that partnership, and Miller walked in with close to 10 an over required for a duration of more than 13 overs. They did it the difficult way. No six sixes or six fours, but through a boundary every over, and some hard running between the wickets. Seven continuous overs starting with the 10th had least a boundary; only one of them went for two. The turnaround began with Miller hitting Yuvraj over long-on in the 10th over, and was at its most destructive when Miller hit Yuvraj's replacement, Mendis, for six and four in the 12th.

That boundary streak ended in the 17th over when Ashok Dinda nearly got six yorkers in. After only eight runs - that too thanks to the running - came off it, the asking rate finally crossed 12. With 37 required, Finch took the risk, and asked Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl his last over. Bhuvneshwar responded superbly. He did almost everything right, followed the batsmen when they moved in the crease, got the yorkers in, kept it down to just four off the first five balls.

Then misfortune struck. Mandeep edged the last ball through third man for four. Still, the last two overs had swung the game in Warriors' favour, and 29 were required off the last two. Mandeep was tiring, and had lost all his timing. It was going to be down to Miller now. The pressure was high, and the bowling had been good. Just then, though, Dinda missed his yorker twice in a row, and Miller took that small window of opportunity and placed both the full tosses for fours.

Dinda came back well, but let himself down by not collecting a throw that would have run Miller out by a long distance. It was still Warriors' game to lose with 18 required off seven balls. And how they lost it.

Dinda finished his over off well, but a misfield from Rahul Sharma at third man not only allowed Kings XI a bonus run, but kept Miller on strike for the start of the final over. All his cards played out, Finch had to go back to Wright, who got away with a short ball first up, and bowled a good yorker to follow. Fourteen off four.

The field was now set for the wide yorker, but Wright got it wrong. He bowled a full bunger in Miller's swinging range, and once again Miller took that opportunity with a six over long-off. Wright came back with a low full toss, which Miller couldn't get under. Single. Think again. Mandeep turned that certain one into two, and snatched away whatever little advantage the bowling side might have had.

With six required off two, Wright needed to get Miller off strike, but he bowled another full toss, which Miller send crashing over long-off again.

One of the best and most organized run chases I have seen in I.P.L.Punjab kept their nerves like an army batallion and launched a calculated assault. The 4th wicket partnership was amongst the best ever in I.P.L.cricket.It was an abject lesson in pacing a run-chase.Overall,cricket at it's best.

A Team that has mediocre bowlers like Ajantha Medis in their side can never win.

Look @ his bowling figures. Most expensive among all regular bowlers. Wright is part-timer.

Mendis figures reads - 4.-0-38-1 ..Econ. 9.50

No wonder, PWI lost so badly. Leading spinner leaking runs as river.

Posted by 09wiledw on (April 22, 2013, 14:02 GMT)

Should have got Wright's overs out of the way in the middle and left the death to Bhuvi and Dinda. Also i don't think Sharma bowled out. Surely PWI new Wright isn't a front line bowler, poor planning, I didn't expect Wright to defend that against Miller in that form.

Posted by DINESHCC on (April 22, 2013, 12:02 GMT)

Like Ashwin, Rahul sharma is a lazy fielder. Whenever the ball goes to R.Sharma, the batsman cross for two runs and that cost the match also. Especially 19th over last ball, Mandeep Singh took two runs and given strike to D.Miller and he finished off the match with a ball to spare.

It was quite a thriller. I think crowds generally love high scoring chases. Both Mandeep and Miller played exceptionally well though towards end Mandeep left all the big hitting to Miller which wasnt exploited by Warriors. Kings Punjab need to rest Gilchrist and Hussey and see how things pan out for them. Like the way Sangakkara's rest has helped Sunrisers Pomerbach and Shaun Marsh should be given chances. This should help them do better. Warriors batted well but couldnt keep Miller quiet which shows lack of planning. They fielded quite poorly and some of their bowlers dont have sound temprament.

Bowling for Pune.... Kumar, Dinda,Sharma, Ajantha and Yuvi. Now the only real allrounder here is Yuvi and no more bowling options in the team for this lost game. As Dinda has been leaking runs on many occasions who is there in this team as backup ? Bowling is the weak point in this Pune selection. It is time they think wisely and not emotionally.

At the presentation afterwards, it was unfair to ask Pune Warriors where it all went wrong, because they also played a flawless brilliant game. It was just that the Lucky Fairy in 20/20 had time to guide Miller & Mandeep. It was a brilliant game of cricket and a good advertisement for exciting 20/20 cricket. Congratulations (and a thank you) to both teams and Miller.

Posted by   on (April 22, 2013, 10:05 GMT)

Issue with Pune is they do not select a balanced side. When u include Wright and Smith they are batting all rounders. You take out an alrounder who has been bowling well then you are stuck when it comes to final overs, specially when Dinda is unpredictable. You can stack up the team with all batters and then who is going to bowl and hold the fort ???

Another poor performance from PWI.. Allan Donald has tried almost everything that he could but all in vain.. It was a good batting track as was evident from the fact that over 370 runs scored for the loss of just 7 wickets.. It was the fielding which could have won PWI this game but they were all pretty ordinary on the field.. But still it was a good target to chase and credit goes to Mandeep and Miller who batted brilliantly.. Also Vohra placed the ball beautifully with Mandy to keep the required run rate in check after the loss of two early wickets.. Bhuvi was once again impressive with the ball.. I think he should have got much more better results for his efforts if he is in some other team..

Pune is shuffling all around and even the captain. It is time they stick to one captain for the rest of the series. They did not seem to have any strategy at the end. Even Gilchrist who do not score or even keep properly is kept as he is a good captain.

Posted by Tigg on (April 22, 2013, 8:50 GMT)

Why was Luke Wright bowling at the death in his first match? He doesn't bowl much for England, and certainly not at the death where your specialist bowlers should be there to do a job.

Posted by Narbavi on (April 22, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

And they spoke highly of Mendis, even india's local young talent got the better of him, only one among matthews or mendis can play, matthews can play as a bolwer only, as a batsman he has let down his team badly, look at luke wright, first game in the tournament and hits 6 fours of 6 balls, well done luke, well done Finch, PWI without these lankan players looks a competitive outfit!!

Any news on Shaun Marsh ? Is he fit to Play ?

Posted by dineshsoni1999 on (April 22, 2013, 7:59 GMT)

when p w going very good last match and batting not so well now bowler not doing well. i thing the big mistake was why finch given 18th over to kumar who was only strike bowler for P W . If he bowl last over P W may have win the match. But now they shud play with Wright,Smith, fich and Richardson the Bowler and Rasool in place of R sharma.

Posted by Narbavi on (April 22, 2013, 7:59 GMT)

@Perera32: Lol, had your matthews played then Pune wouldn't even got close to 180 in the first place, do not give excuses!!

ok, then why is that now Angelo Mathews not been playing..... come on...... please don't say he is been injured....

Kings XI chased down the stiff target with their best batsman still to come!! Piyush Chawla !! The tragic comdey of PC and IP (Irfan Pathan) is that they are bowlers who bat better than they can bowl :)

Ind Fans are giving solid hard facts here about Angelo's so called legendary batting and bowling skills but some SL fans are blind to it and are only offering their own biased subjective views about Angelo to repeat that he is such a good all rounder blah blah.

I challenge these people to argue on the basis of facts and not on the basis of some pipe dream. Angelo has scored a princely 52 runs in 5 innings this season at less than 100 SR and he has taken only 1 wicket in 16 overs at the cost of 116 runs. On this basis, Angelo seems to be a poor batsman and a poor bowler.

As per these fans: A Poor Batsman + A Poor Bowler = A GREAT All Rounder :-p

Posted by Aussiesfalling on (April 22, 2013, 6:00 GMT)

It says something about the Pune team that Luke Wright, who rarely gets to bowl in T20 for either Sussex or England, was required to bowl the last over because they had no one better. At least he got the chance to bat, albeit out of his normal position. You would have to ask some questions about a coaching set up that has picked the likes of Marsh and Smith ahead of him.

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 22, 2013, 5:47 GMT)

@Patdabac: Another proof of your terrible logic & lack of understanding. If Dinda goes for 9.25 RPO in an innings where the asking RPO was 9.25 it means he bowled at a par level. Moreover, the asking RPO during his last 2 overs was actually 12-13 and he gave 8 in one and 13 in the other even when M's were looking to go after him - not bad at all. You had blamed Kumar & Yuvi in your 1st comment here. Yesterday Bhuvi went for 7.75 & Yuvi for 7.5, in a high scoring match this is awesome. So are you taking back your comments for Bhuvi & Yuvi?

Angelo is getting so much flak cos he has done little in the 5 matches he has played in IPL plus the horrible shot he played vs SRH. Angelo has not only not done anything here but he has failed BIG time. 52 runs in 5 matches at SR <100 & 1/116 in 16 overs is clear proof of this. That he was the captain makes it look even worse. His position as a captain & as a player was and remains untenable.

If you can't see this then you know little dear.

Pune lost last two simple matches under the captaincy of mathews and finch, ross taylor should lead the team, which is quite as simple. pune should think about it!!!

Posted by Makg on (April 22, 2013, 5:24 GMT)

PWI made a good decision by dropping Mathews, but i feel they should have opted for Mitchell instead of Mendis, as the KXIP has not so much experienced batting line up to handle Pace. We have seen them falling apart against pacy shot balls, Vohra, Mandeep, Gurkeerat. All are a bit nervous against the same. Hope to see Marsh in the line ups of both teams in next match, one for Gilchrist and one for Mendis.

Posted by   on (April 22, 2013, 5:24 GMT)

Punjab-XI played like Kings against the fancied Pune ain't called the Warriors. Cos for Pune Luke was w-RIGHT when he batted a 10/ball 34, but that same Luke was WRONG thus labelled a s a Villain when he bowled that final over considering 15/runs to David who Mille-d the ball along with that MAN-deep-ly Swing his bat too in all parts, thus handed proudly the Win for Kings-XI Punjab.

they failed to judiously use their resoures theres no need for an extra bowler i.e mendis ,,,inplace methews shold be there ,,,and what is the problem of management they should give captaincy to yuvraj as theres nothing much left to loose,,,he played well and he bowled well but what hell happened to finch he must had to try yuvraj between 13 to 16 instead of wright,,,,,he was a great partnership broker and wiket taker we have already seen even in worldcup and also in other matches ,,,,,,te\\

they should try yuvraj as a captain as a key player of which he's worth of.,,,,,otherwise pune will never gonna win again,,,,,,,,,,and he should bowl his all 4 overs he have this ability.........

It is the poor fielding effort by Pune which let them down. Missed run-outs, giving extra runs where there should be a single all matters in the end. Well played KXIP. Keep Matthews out or replace Mendis with him. Finch, Smith and Wright are going to play. They did whatever they can for the side.

true that matthews form with the bat isn't good but previous games he done brilliantly with the ball..today PWI miss his captaincy & bowling..matthews should bat at 4....he has finished amazing games for SL..sure he doesn't deserve to lose place

First of All, Mathews is a good captain but his batting is poor, He struggles in t20s because the truth is he is a person who likes to pace an innings. He got great talent but very poor temperament and patience. Giving Finch captaincy was poor. 1.Finch is a australian player, being a subcomtinent player the player can interact with the other easily know their methods blah blah. 2.Finch is a foreign player. 3. Putting him captain means the pressure to stay in the side goes. 4. Could have put the delhi state captain Mithun Manhas, an experienced campaigner. Too Early to say about finch's form.

David Miller You Beauty...Absoloutely Stunning Display form one of South Africa's Brightest stars..I wonder wat was gilchrist was doing wit tis guy(miller)..because if u r having such a talented young batsmen like miller then he should be given the chance.in english domestic t20 miller had nearly won the cup fo yorkshire..he was 2nd highest run scorer in tat tournament....

Posted by Thisa123 on (April 22, 2013, 2:27 GMT)

Good display of batting by both the teams and To be honest i think Mathews doesn't fit to the PWI team so it was good decision drop him and giving that chance to Wright. Both teams played well but unfortunately PWI ws in the loosing side. Best of luck for the rest of the games guys. Cheers!!!!!!!

Hello Dear friends, don't compare Mr Dhoni Gambir and Virat. Both of them showing over tense and not matured mentally whenver their team playing bad whereas dhoni always be cool and admitting his mistake. They never deserve for captains.

Posted by spirit_cric on (April 22, 2013, 1:40 GMT)

PWI has relly paid the decision of dropping mathews. He recently led 2 T2O internationals in AUS and won both of them this yr.Why dropping him? They forgrt the valus of his 4 overs. He can bowl his 4 overs any stage of the game less than 30 runs, Look @ his bowling statistics in last 6 games. PWI didnt lose bcoz of mathew's captaincy, they lost bcoz of their poor batting.Selectors should go for international players ahead the players even cant make in to their national side,,,

This is a very good, descriptive report. This should be a template for all match reports, instead of the hyperbole and usual crap.

Posted by   on (April 22, 2013, 1:02 GMT)

Pune is a great team - widely loved, admired and full of immensely talented players. Based on talent, they can give any IPL team great fight. However, they were the bottom team last year and they are (one of) the bottom team so far this year.

I think Pune's main problem is that they lack good leader, a leader who can keep his spot and one who doesn't take one of the four foreign spots. They need a leader like Dhoni, Gambhir or Kohli. Even Agarkar can be a great leader. As none of them are available, Uthapa or Yuvraj are the best option for Pune.

An average foreign player (or a great foreign player going through a lean patch) is a great liability and not a great asset. This is already evident with so many foreign captains in the IPL this year. Unless an exceptional foreign player in great form is available, I think it is wiser to go with an Indian player who is likely to star is 90% of the matches by the virtue of his performance and talent.

Posted by AneYako on (April 22, 2013, 0:46 GMT)

lol yep Pune didn't miss Mathews, his captaincy nor his bowling..nope. /sarcasm for those who can't tell. This is the problem with people being short sighted. It was embarrassing to watch how they couldn't even defend such a high score, even after the early two wickets. Horrible use of bowlers and field setting. I don't see many Indian fans blaming the poor continuous performance by the Indian players either as usual. YaY Dinda! On a different note congratulations to Kings xi. Their batsman were great under such high pressure conditions.

Posted by Ajit_Gupta on (April 22, 2013, 0:15 GMT)

Sangakara had set a great precedence by dropping himself from playing XI and freeing some place for others. Taking cue Angelo Matthews' exclusion was very timely for KXIP infusing in-form talents to perfrom in the middle with Luke Wright and Steven Smith taking the centre stage. It is time for Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist to follow suit if they really want their teams to perform to full potential. It was so exciting to watch David Miller and Luke Wright grabbing their chances and providing cricketing entertainment in a non-stop run feast.

Posted by KFRITZ on (April 22, 2013, 0:11 GMT)

I think warriors need to replace Rahul sharma with Perez rasool. And they will be a balanced team....

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 23:53 GMT)

Why on earth did they give Wright the last over, he deserves a place in the team for his batting and maybe a couple of overs of part time bowling, what he's not is a death bowler. Bad captaincy.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 23:29 GMT)

Congrats Kings you did it this time but you need to get your batting and feeling up and going and then you will be a force to be reckon with.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 22:36 GMT)

Great game. Both the sides played something resembling their best team.

For Pune, Samuels needs to come in place of Mendis, as the 4th international player. In addition to his solid batting, Samuels also provides an option to bowl both in the Power Play and in the death overs. They should also think of drafting Parvaiz Rasool and Ishwar Pandey in place of Manhas and Nayar.

Finch, Wright, Samuels, Yuvraj, Smith/Taylor, Uthappa, Rasool, B Kumar, Dinda, R Sharma, I Pandey

For the Kings, S Marsh should replace Gilchrist to put him out of his misery.

Posted by Nampally on (April 21, 2013, 21:19 GMT)

Pune warriors put up what appeared to be a winning total of over 180 runs. But amazingly Kings XI Punjab chased it down. A great batting display by Mandeep & Miller. Punjab would have won the match much earlier had Gilchrist not dropped Finch much earlier. Like Mathews, Gilchrist is also becoming a non contributing Player/captain!

Posted by Patdabac on (April 21, 2013, 21:11 GMT)

@ Harmony111: Look, im not a huge expert on Sri lankan players but you seem to hate Mathews. How is an international player who has a lot of experience with the bat and bowl invaluable to a team. 4 or 5 poor performances doesn't make Angelo a bad player, I've seen that guy win matches with the bat, ball and in the field for Sri lanka. About Dinda: He can ball as many maidens as he wants but going for over 9 rpo in a match isn't doing any wonders for the team. T20 cricket is not for everyone, just look at classy players like Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis and Sangakkara, who have struggled to perform consistently. Angelo is a good player who is out of form, why is he getting so much attention over a couple of bad performances?

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 20:55 GMT)

@usernames: I think Dinda has shown tremendous improvement in the last 2-3 matches after he was hit for 4-5 boundaries in one of the matches. Dinda bowled some excellent yorkers vs CSK and even today he was largely very impressive except for the two 4s that Miller hit off him. I was pessimistic for Dinda but if Dinda can learn to bowl yorkers then there is hope still for Ishant Sharma.

I honestly don't think Finch made any major mistakes today. Yuvi was just as likely to go for runs by Miller or Mandeep and Finch had no other aces to play. Rahul Sharma had been expensive too and Smith was the only other option he had. He must have thought it was Wright's day and do gave him the ball but I repeat myself here - Pune did not so much lose this match as Punjab won it. We got to praise Mandeep & Miller than finding faults with Pune except for a few typical mistakes.

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 20:42 GMT)

Guys, I request you all to read Charaka Jayaratne's comment posted on April 21, 2013, 19:33 GMT.

His comment would be a gem of sarcasm if he was not serious and passionate about Angelo's utility. He talks of Angelo's intelligence - he should see how Angelo got out in the WT20 Finals to Sammy. He talks of Angelo's big sixes - he should see that Angelo has hit only 1 six so far in 5 matches here and that he got out trying to hit a six of Mishra vs SRH :-p

Given that Angelo's SR is <100 this IPL and he has taken only one wicket in 5 matches, I can't see the basis of calling Angelo even an average batsman or an average bowler. That some SL fans are calling him an all rounder and that this person goes on to call Angelo "ONE OF THE BEST ALL ROUNDERS EVER" is either some spiffing cryptic sarcasm or (as is more likely) is vacuous.

My req to such SL fans is to be realistic. Ind fans have seen how Irfan/Kaif went down. Don't expect much from Angelo, he is unlikely to be your Savior Angel.

Posted by SurlyCynic on (April 21, 2013, 20:31 GMT)

Great batting from Miller and Mandeep. Although, I actually thought Mandeep had lost it for KXIP by not getting out and getting Hussey in! I say that because although he batted well early on, he was really struggling to hit boundaries at the end. Luckily Miller got on strike and did the business.

Surely it's time for Gilly to retire now. Why is a 40 yr old who doesn't play other cricket an IPL captain? He used to be a legend but that was years ago.

PS: Why all these aggressive comments from SL fans? Relax guys, it's only a game.

Posted by usernames on (April 21, 2013, 20:23 GMT)

@Harmony111 -- Exactly right. Wright is an excellent T20 batsman and you could utilize him to get a few overs out of the way but only your specialists should bowl the death overs. Dinda is terrible most of the time, so I guess there were no options this time around, but Wright should make *any* T20 team based on his batting.

Heck, it was him who set up the target in the first place; if not for him, we would have seen a 160 being chased. People who are blaming Luke are either Sri Lankans or new to cricket or both.

Posted by usernames on (April 21, 2013, 20:20 GMT)

Also, these Sri Lankans going on about Matthews, shut up already. Matthews isn't Mahela, he isn't going to win you T20 matches. He could be the right fit for a team like Rajasthan but I don't see how he fits in the current Pune XI.

Even if one of these foreign players had to go, I'd have Marsh, Marlon, Ross BEFORE I go to Matthews. He does not fit into a T20 team, certainly not the Pune XI. There are players who are magnitude of order better than him who are on the bench, as they should.

He's a very good ODI player and an OK test batsman (certainly not a bowler) but Pune shouldn't have someone who's a decent bat at 6-7 and can't bowl. Finch, Smith, Wright, Mendis are the right overseas players to be playing.

I don't think Pune should read too much into this. This is the best XI they can--and should--field apart from, perhaps, Rasool in place of Dinda. Dinda, on his day, can be so expensive that can lose you the match single-handedly! We have had match winners, but he is one of a kind.

On the other hands, Kings XI pulled off a stunning victory! When Manan was going, I had a feeling that Punjab will take this match however the fashion in which they did so is praiseworthy. It was excellent to watch young Mandeep run hard to ensure Miller got as much strike as possible in the end. He played a good knock and seems to have a calm head on his shoulders!

A team of Mandeep, Manan, Marsh, Hussey, Miller, Gurkeerat, Mahmood, Piyush, Gony, PK, Awana will be a real danger to most teams. I think both these teams got their squads pretty much right today. Hope they win a few more matches to make the IPL a tad more interesting in these middle phases.

Wright is NOT a death bowler in ANY FORM of cricket. He never has been and he never will be. To have him bowl the last over. I mean has he EVER bowled a last over before? Shocking captaincy

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 20:06 GMT)

@LoveTheWayLionsPlay: Nope, any team that loses 4 wickets in an over must have batted poorly. In that match, Marsh, Nayyar, Rahul played horrible shots to gift their wickets away. Most importantly, at an extremely crucial stage, their captain Angelo Mathews played a brainless shot to get out and leave his team with no proper batsmen to score the final tranche of runs.

I want to ask you what is the value of Angelo in the team? He can hardly score any runs - 52 runs in 5 matches & he can hardly bowl - 16 overs - 113 runs for 1 wicket is proof of this. Sachin in his terrible form scored more runs in one knock than Angelo could in 5 - see the difference?

As per stats, Angelo is the 5th best bowler and the 7th or 8th best batsman in Pune's Team. Forget about him being the captain, we are questioning his very spot in the team.

Can you give us any proper reason why Angelo should be in the team or be the captain? I would be delighted if you can come up with one.....

Apparently to some people, Mathews is a Titan walking among mere mortals ! x3.

Posted by DeathStroke on (April 21, 2013, 20:04 GMT)

@Lions Homer Pune lost against SRH because they had a brainfart and choked. I never said that "Mathews was the sole reason PW lost to SRH" did I? I, like others criticized him for his lack of production regarding his batting, which has been proven true thus far.

Do you realize that I am the one being entertained by you? ^^

My work here is done. I think I've ruffled some of your feathers and got you worked up over a game of bat and ball. I'll let you talk to yourself now. Ciao!

"Best captain cant win matches 4u unless u r not performing.. " See Punter, he is best captain but he is not performing.. For mathews n Tailor both r non performing assests rite now.. So its better to sit on bench and watch the IPL! Same thing i will say for pointing.. U unnecessary holding 1 overseas position. So better to quit captaincy n watch..

I think criticizing Luke Wright for today's loss is a bit cruel. Keep in mind that KP had two well set batsmen and Miller is known to be a fearsome hitter of the ball. Some of his shots must have reminded people of Kerosene of WC 99. Now in the past two super overs, even the likes of World #1 Steyn and Yadav (who is a proper bowler unlike Wright) gave away 15 runs even when the batsmen were not quite well set. In that light, Wright had less than 50% chance of being able to defend it. R P Singh too failed to defend 16 runs in the final over vs CSK. I agree that in general 16 runs ought to be defended but this was a case where you could bowl 4 great balls and two bad bowls which would nullify all the good work. Did Dinda not find it out too? He was quite impressive today in the final overs but he and Bhuvnesh gave 3 boundaries in the final 24 balls that they bowled. Too bad.

Those who blame Wright for this loss must know that he gave Pune extra 20 runs to defend to begin with.

Posted by Rick777 on (April 21, 2013, 19:51 GMT)

Pune lost due to bad feilding and lack of support from their local players. Apart from Yuvi's alright performance today no one made a match winning contribution. Also it would have been good to see Thomas playing instead of Mendis who is a good bowler but out of form. Good if Smith & Luke perform consistently. Unless they do, bring in Angelo & Rosco back. Samuels should play after Rosco leaves. Angelo is a too good player to miss out as he canproduce match winning performances. But saying this again. Make Yuvi captain so that he can handle the foreign players based on performance.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 19:49 GMT)

pune needs matthews for next game he is a economical bowler n match winner batsman he is nt in good form but he can come to his form quickly some indians dont like him but he is a true legend..

Posted by ----LoveTheWayLionsPlay--- on (April 21, 2013, 19:49 GMT)

@ DeathStroke: If thatz the case, then Pune lost against SRH because they bowled extremely well under pressure. If Mathews was the captain you blame him.If he wasn't you credited your opposition. How funny you are..lol keep entertain us.

Posted by ----LoveTheWayLionsPlay--- on (April 21, 2013, 19:39 GMT)

@Dravid_Gravitas : Itz not Mathews but Steve Smith played the knock you are talking.lol 6 off 9 in crucial last 4 overs.Smith's slow batting was the main reason for Pune's last two losses.17 off 25 vs Sun Risers & now 6 off 9.But itz not a bad idea to kicked mathews out in this local league.Because we Sri Lankans want fresh & injury free captain for champions trophy.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 21, 2013, 19:33 GMT)

@Dravid_Gravitas ; You are the same guy who said that "Thisara Perera n Mahela Jayawardene must be dropped" for their respective teams. Now you are here bashing another SL player ?? You have no any credibility left what so ever tnx to your biased comments. So why bother ?? Btw how did your Luke did in the match. let me tell ya, he lost the match for PWI. lol. Finch is an insult to Cricket captains in the world who gave final over to Luke who defined the mediocrity today. Finch had no idea how set the field. He seemed lost. lol. Was it really Mathews who cost matches to PWI ? lol Get a grip..

Posted by binu.emiliya on (April 21, 2013, 19:33 GMT)

I think Rosco is the best captain Pune got ,he may not be in good form with the bat but Pune needs his capaincy skills they can include Parvez Rasool or Ali Murtaza for Mendis. I prefer Murtaza and Rassool over Rahul Sharma because both of them are better batsmen than Rahul sharama and his shot selection in pathetic! Anyways very good show by Miller & Mandy

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 19:33 GMT)

Pune had mathews seated which cost the match i say ..... one of the best all-rounders ever.. few critics should understand that cricket is a kind of a mind game u should have some intellect even mathews can come and whack from the first ball that's not cricket.. as an intelectual captain u should play sensibly that's what he did in last few games unfortunately pune coulnt cruise to victory his economical lovely piece of bowling would surely have changed the match.. some critics put some malicious comments on him nevermind majority with him.. need not to say what a match winner he has been for Sri Lanka with those mammoth sixes...eagerly want to see PUNE in play offs..............

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 21, 2013, 19:25 GMT)

Simple reason "poor fielding - Display" by Pune Which cost the match.. what will do Ross tailor or mathews ?? Where u put ? Finch n luke performing. Mendis is always useful bt u must know how to use him.. 1 place is vacant!u can play with smith/samuels or / tailor. I think batting is ok so i will go with samuels most of times.

Posted by DeathStroke on (April 21, 2013, 19:25 GMT)

@Htc Android: Pune lost BECAUSE KXIP batted extremely well under pressure. Its funny when you blame this loss JUST on Mathews's absence when Pune was controlling the whole match start to finish. Miller and Mandeep batted as if they had ice in their veins. How about instead of whining for your southpaw, you give KXIP some well deserved credit? Mathews was criticized solely for his batting and in his absence, Pune looked great with the bat.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 21, 2013, 19:15 GMT)

All bowlers of pune bowling too far on off side no body bowled a single bowl on miller's pads.. They r bowlin on hitting zone of miller.. 14 frm 4, how can u lost!

Posted by Dragonboyz on (April 21, 2013, 19:13 GMT)

It is very humorous to hear some srilankan fans whining about mathews inclusion would have changed the outcome.First of all if mathews was selected in the team luke wright wouldnt got the game and some of them telling mathews has better bowling economy,if mathews is good only for his bowling then pune can opt for alfonso thomas or kane richardson who bowls far better than overhyped mathews.pune lost but atleast they played positively not like mathews who dont know what to do while batting whether to hit or defend

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 19:13 GMT)

PUNE can select Angelo as a bowler who is the most economical bowler and give a chance to bat @ num 8 or 9 position ...........

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 21, 2013, 19:10 GMT)

@Narbavi ; How about that ?? lol Your Luke went from HERO to ZERO. lol And your Finch the new Skipper was clueless on the field. I am not sure if he knows what field setting means. The fact his Luke is a mediocre player who swings at everything n gets luck time to time. If Mathews didn't have the responsibility of captaincy, you could see what a great hitter of the ball he is. Listen, Narbavi, you are not cut out for Cricket analysis. coz you have no idea about the game n how it works. So pls...

Seems like Taylor is the only decient captain Pune have, bring him in drop Mendis bring in a local bowler and drop a local batsman so Finch, Wright, Taylor and Smith should be you 4 internationals.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 21, 2013, 19:03 GMT)

Yes poor captaincy by Finch! He shld use Luke write with new ball. Save mendis overs for middle overs! Plz I want Samels in place of Smith.. He can bowl and gud player.. My 4 overseas player for pune Finch, Luke Rite, Samuels and Mendis! Some times smith some times samuels.. Thats it

Posted by NeverGvUp on (April 21, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

Worst team selection ever...atleast they shoud hv include ross taylor who is a experience player ...although they becme success in batting they shoud include a batsman who can play 20 overs..and there is no genuine alroundr who can ball well so i think PW should bring back mathews for the places of the mendis or smith

Posted by Htc-Android on (April 21, 2013, 19:00 GMT)

Happy now indian fans. Had mathews played today they would have blamed his captaincy for the loss. Now they cannot couldnt defend 186 under Finch. Try and analyze who is the reason for this loss.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 21, 2013, 18:56 GMT)

Pune hv to blame themselves. What a poor display of fielding.. Everytime ball goes fielder they run two. Rahul Sharma poor fellow dnt use his sense while batting or fielding..! Pune lost the game by Poor fielding efforts ..

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 18:52 GMT)

@Patdabac: Excuse me but I think most people here criticized Angelo for his lack of contribution and his value in the team. Your argument is a straw man argument hence invalid. As far as Dinda's bowling goes, Pune won the match vs CSK parly due to his accurate bowling in the final overs, he managed to keep even MSD quiet, that must be something isn't it? Today too, Dinda's last two overs were quite impressive. Giving away 8 runs in those conditions is awesome. Yuvraj has not played too many matches this season so how is he responsible for all the losses beats me. Today Yuvi scored 30+ runs and took 1 for 15, I think he did quite reasonably. If by Kumar you meant Bhuvnesh Kumar then obviously you know little about the game and thus you should not tell others about your ignorance.

It may be difficult for you to see this but not all losses are due to mistakes. Sometimes the other side is a bit too good. Today Pune lost not due to any major mistakes but cos the M's batted beautifully.

Posted by ramonster on (April 21, 2013, 18:51 GMT)

I think Finch got nervous and brought Kumar back too early. The pressure was too high for Wright, and Mandeep and Miller made them pay. Go KXIP!!!

Posted by Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas_Atheist on (April 21, 2013, 18:51 GMT)

That Mathews guy is a dead-weight. See how far PWI took this match. Had he batted he would have scored a hapless 5 off 9 balls, taking singles off 1st or second balls with tailenders. PWI as usual 140 all out. I mean, his limited skills in batting are crystal clear. The match would have been done and dusted by KXIP in 16 overs or so. If that Mathews guy bowled a few overs, the way Miller and Mandy batted, they would have finished the match in 15 or 14 overs. Please free that Mathews guy of his misery and send him out of PWI squad. He is a liability. Luke Wright - what an inning! I've always said, that Mathews guy should be kicked out and Luke should be played. Well done PWI. Your team can only go up from here. Better luck next time. Congrats KXIP!

Posted by JG2704 on (April 21, 2013, 18:44 GMT)

ITV4 decided touring cars were more important than IPL so didn't see the game.

Pleased Luke finally got a game but sad that he bowled the killer over.

Obviously must have been a gem of an inns to watch but I wonder if Yuvraj - who is vastly more experienced in these conditions and whose 2 overs went for 15 ER 7.5 wasn't the man? I know he's a spinner and captains don't like spinners bowling at the death but everyone else was going for around 10 an over. Well done KXI

Posted by Patdabac on (April 21, 2013, 18:40 GMT)

Firstly as a Saffer fan, well done to Miller. Some Indian fans here are so narrow minded and lack knowledge of cricket. First they blamed Mathews for his captaincy and remove him from the team. But they failed to realise it is Indian players like Dinda, Yuvraj and Sharma who have the reason they've lost so many matches. I have to admit Mathew's bowling has been good economy wise regardless of his batting form. Pune missed his bowling tbh.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:34 GMT)

Wright choice with the bat.. But not so Wright with the ball!!

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 18:31 GMT)

I don't know why Finch said he took a gamble by asking Dinda to bowl the 19th. Did Ficnh have options? Asking Yuvi to bowl at that stage would have been a bigger risk and in any case Dinda gave away only 13 runs which in the situation can't be said to be too expensive. I think today was an example of top class batting winning a match. Pune could have done not much else given the way Mandy and Miller batted. AFAIK, they both played nearly flawless innings save a few quick singles here or there.

Reg Angelo, I think Angelo was lucky that he was not playing today. His mediocre bowling would have been fodder for Mandeep and Miller today and KP would have won in 18 overs instead of winning in the 20th over. Angelo's RPO so far would not have mattered a bit today, the way Wright got hit today was ample indication of how Angelo would have been like 2 overs for 35 runs today had he played. At least Wright got some runs for Pune, Angelo can't score more than 5 given his limited batting skills.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:22 GMT)

Poor Pune ..very poor captaincy by Finch ..He is asking part time bowler to death over ..he is one over short..my four would be finch , wright,Mathews, marsh or smith would be balancing the bat and bowl ..very sloppy fielding by Dinda..He missed run out..

Posted by sonu77 on (April 21, 2013, 18:20 GMT)

Marsh in - Gilly out, that will make strong kings xi.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:19 GMT)

heh!!! looks like the captaincy change doesn't worked for pune, if the captain cannot defend 184 in the field what is the use of him

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 21, 2013, 18:17 GMT)

Is this Miller the same Miller who had played a magical knock in Friend's T20 SF last year and almost won the match?

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:15 GMT)

Mathew has been the most economical bowler for Pune this year.. his exclusion paid the prize .. poor captainship by finch Yuvaraj would have bowled more and horrible bowling by luke right... really dissapointed plz bring ur original allround captain back...

Posted by nkoch on (April 21, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

Well played Punjab, well played David Miller and Mandeep Singh. If Pune think they can win matches with Dinda and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, they'll be at bottom of the pile in 2013 as well. They need a good death over bowler. Alfanso Thomas, where are you?

Posted by 22many on (April 21, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

Taylor for Smith and to captain team.

Posted by ODI_BestFormOfCricket on (April 21, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

gilly should pave a way for marsh, he is totally out of touch at top.

Posted by sonu77 on (April 21, 2013, 18:13 GMT)

@Narbavi: haha everyone saw what happened.lol Finch blazing away but very ordinary captaincy & luke wright hitting fours but giving away sixes.Truth is they missed Mathew's bowling today !

Posted by Felix1025 on (April 21, 2013, 18:13 GMT)

Congrats Kings XI. Are you happy now Pune Warriors (no cry Babies) who thought you are loosing matches because of Mathews? Such narrow thinking? If you want at least to win matches in the future restore Mathews as the captain for the rest of the season and empower him with the authority and back him up 100% instead of pulling his legs. Let him build a team and whoever obstructs his captaincy throw them out. Mathews is the only one who can build your team but he seems to play with no confidence (of his management) I wish Mathews and Mendis best of luck (of course I am a Sri Lankan)

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:13 GMT)

Mathew has been the most economical bowler for Pune .. his exclusion paid the prize .. poor captainship and bowling by finch... really dissapointed plz bring ur original captain back...

Matthews has been the most economical bowler for pune.. he was ommitted now paid the prize.. poor captainship by aron ,, missed mathews big time

Posted by Optic on (April 21, 2013, 18:10 GMT)

About time Pune played Wright, far better batsman than the likes of Mitch Marsh, Matthews or Steve Smith. One thing they shouldn't do though is give him too many overs, he's alright for the odd over but when he plays for England he hardly ever bowls anymore.

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 18:08 GMT)

THINGS ARE SO... When u r not playing ur all round captain...missed his economical bowling... bad luck Mathews wait up for ur time and show who u r...really poor captainship by aron thoroughly dissapointed... where on earth u play without ur Captain...

Posted by Ruchiralk on (April 21, 2013, 18:07 GMT)

@Afker Hussain: Maybe Mathew's bowling should teach Luke Wright and Steven Smith how to bowl. Mathews is a quality allrounder, who is out of form with the bat. Steve Smith used up 10 balls for his 6 runs today, that could've been the moment that Kings IX won the game. It's amazing how Indians don't blame failures like Yuvraj and Dinda who have done worse than Mathews.

Posted by KallisTheGreatest on (April 21, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

Though Mathews not in a great touch with the bat, he is the most economical bowler for Pune.Warriors missed his 4 overs badly today.

Posted by Narbavi on (April 21, 2013, 18:05 GMT)

@Tal_Botvinnik: As if i didn't show up when Rajasthan lost unlike some of your countrymen who show up only when Watson fails which is a rare thing!!

Posted by Perera32 on (April 21, 2013, 18:03 GMT)

@Narbavi: So how are Pune doing without Mathews? Mathew's bowling economy rate in the 5 games he played was just 7 runs per over. What was Luke Wright's and Steve Smith's bowling economy rate?

Posted by ddr3 on (April 21, 2013, 18:01 GMT)

lol good batting by punjab but some real bad bowling from pune!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 21, 2013, 17:22 GMT)

Shaun Marsh's absence is as big as a loss to Kings if not more than Gayle would be for RCB ! Hope he's able to play soon but it's probably to late he's the key man.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 21, 2013, 16:19 GMT)

Good to see you Narbavi where were you when your side got compulsively trashed by the RCB and when Mahela scored a 50 and got back into form.

Luke Wright should bat at No 3. Wonderful Striking. Worried with with all the power hitters drafted in where is the "Anchor" man (example: S Marsh, H Vihari, M Hussey.) Mediocre Ashok Dinda, A Nayar who has done absolutely nothing substantial should be dropped and be replaced by P Rasool and I Pandey

Posted by   on (April 21, 2013, 16:07 GMT)

A Lesson to Mathews how Finch and Luke Wright Batted !

Posted by Narbavi on (April 21, 2013, 15:59 GMT)

infact, this is getting ridiculous, 6 fours off his first 6 balls, what a move by pune management to drop the mediocre Matthews and include Luke Wright!!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (April 21, 2013, 15:58 GMT)

Yuvraj is an overrated slogger a top class bowler like Mahmood has no problem getting him out. Luke Wright however that's a real batsman, hits through the ball with line not across it still balanced and powerful he should be above Yuvraj no question.

Posted by Narbavi on (April 21, 2013, 15:55 GMT)

Wow, look at Pune after Matthews getting dropped, Finch is blazing away, luke wright hitting 4 fours of his first four balls, this is what they missed!!

Posted by hamdan22 on (April 21, 2013, 15:19 GMT)

Pune is playing well..... Yuvi should charge the battery of Pune Warriors today..... Go Yuvi Gooooo

Posted by Gagzilla on (April 21, 2013, 14:54 GMT)

I think this will be a great playing 11 for pune Luke is in good form A.mendis will also be good I think if it works today Ajantha and R.sharma pair will get close to the best spin pair sunil and senanayake for kkr

This the most solid they've looked for sometime. Better off shuffling no.8 between Mathews, Taylor, Marsh and Mendis according to need. Lets see..
