Punjab v Pune, IPL 2013, Mohali April 22, 2013

'I wasn't really thinking much' - Miller

ESPNcricinfo staff

David Miller, the South Africa batsman, produced his best ever batting performance for Kings XI Punjab on Sunday night, slamming an unbeaten 80 off 41 balls to help his team chase down 186 with a ball to spare in Mohali. Pune Warriors must have more than fancied their chances after finishing on 185 for 4 in what has till now been a rather low-scoring tournament, but Miller's 128-run stand with Mandeep Singh was paced well enough to see the hosts home.

The idea, Miller said after the game, was to keep Kings XI in the match till the final over, and see where it went from there. "We did a really great job by taking the game to the last over. We were backing ourselves, we had a chance of winning or losing and I am glad we came out winning at the end of it," Miller told the IPL site. "I said to Mandy, we just need to watch the ball well and really try our best. I wasn't really thinking much to be honest; I had a few plans field wise, but other than that I just tried to clear the ball that came my way."

In all Miller hit five sixes and five fours, finishing with a strike-rate of 195. Mandeep, who had opened the innings, did not match Miller's pace of scoring but provided crucial support with 77 not out off 58 balls. Miller termed Mandeep's knock "phenomenal". "He is a star for the future," he said. "He has a good mind, wants to do well and I am really happy for him."

Kings XI were left with 16 to get off the final over and Miller managed to hit two sixes off the medium pace of Luke Wright, the England allrounder, who was playing his first game of the season for Warriors.

Wright had earlier played a pivotal role in lifting Warriors to a commanding total, blitzing 34 off 10 balls at the death. While he was "delighted" to finally be a part of the action, Wright said he did not quite look forward to bowling that final over as batting is his "main strength".

"I am not an out and out bowler, I just bowl a bit sometimes, so obviously there was pressure there. It was a situation I am not used to being in so often, but it was a shame I couldn't defend the total off the last over," Wright said. "The loss has taken the shine off my knock. But in terms of batting, that has been my main strength and I am very pleased with it."

@Richardson Mzaidume on (April 22, 2013, 11:19 GMT) -- mate I fully agree with you what you said. I have been following Miller ever since he joined my fav team, KXIP but before this he never got the chance to show his real talent. Gilly would always prefer some Aussie over him in previous matches even though Miller played some crucial knocks lower down the order scoring quickfire 20s and 30s. Hussey used him little bit when he was captain while Gilly was out injured. In this match also Gilly had no choice but to send Miller ahead of Hussey coz asking run rate was too high and Hussey couldn't have managed it though he is the 3rd best batsman Punjab have after Marsh and Miller. In next matches Marsh should be brought in for Gilly and Saini (wk) for Gurkeerat thogu they can also think of giving Azhar some rest for few matches just to try new combination. I love the commitment of Azhar for KXIP but sometime even very good player has to sit down to make the balance of team right.

Mathews is a good player but there are better foreign players in Pune. Smith, Finch, Wright and Ross are anytime better than Mathews. Finch should captain the side in the remaining stage. He showed lots of guts. He had the aggression. However giving the last over to Wright was the poor decision. The bowler has to be little street smart and mentally tough to perform in such type of situation.

Fantastic batting from the Kings XI team. Gilchrist would probably be happy to sit out for Marsh if they let him. Wright has to bowl if they leave out Mathews and Marsh at the same time. Mendis will get more games so Pune has to sort out their seam bowling, their bowling has been far and away their strongest suit in the iPL up till that game.

Miller, the killer for Kings IX punjab!!! I dont agree to the statement that yuvraj should have bowled. But still even gone for runs Dinda was the man to bowl. It shows the poor captaincy from Aaru. Also to my opinion Smith should captain the side for PWI as he's experienced of captaining for Sydney Sixers in Big Bash.

PWI ,looking into your bowling lineUp. Why Dinda and Nayar is in Team? Its better to use Rasool and Ishwar Pandey and in place of Mendis use Richardson or Marsh.

  • sasi on April 22, 2013, 13:23 GMT

Yes ofcourse. The Pwi need a good captain. angelo mathews is not a good option. my opinion is yuvraj shuld be the captain of the team.

only good thing in the game for Pune is that they finally got their 4 foreign players correctly

I repeat and repeat again.... Kings XI have one of the most balanced side in IPL... they bat till number 11... given that Parveen Kumar bats at 11... it was just about settling down.... with Shaun Marsh coming in they will be team to beat... u dnt need super stars... u need performers !!!!! Go Kings XI go.... Proud of Punjab !!!!!

Defenitely Yuvraj could have bowled the last over as he is a experienced campaigner. Also, given the troubles of oversea's player against a spinner, he really should have bowled that over. At-most he might have given away 12 runs, but that will do. Its really a poor captaincy from Finch, which showed his in-experince. And what is Dinda doing in this camp, just running & showing how fast he could bowl? While he is getting swayed away by even medicore batsmen...its high time Pune get their bowling combination right..bating seems to be settling

In T20 Cricket Wright it a top order batsmen and is as good a 6 hitter has England has produced, his bowling will fill a hole and on some pitches he can do a job, I have no idea why he was bowling the last over
