Kings XI Punjab's campaign in IPL 2013 gathered pace with their second consecutive win, a stroll in the park compared to their adrenaline-charged chase against Pune Warriors. A fine bowling effort from the Kings XI's seamers, backed by some sharp fielding, restricted the bottom-placed Delhi Daredevils to a modest 120, which the Kings XI batsmen chased comfortably with three overs to spare.

Kings XI opted to bowl on a slow Kotla track and they didn't let partnerships to blossom, the highest being 39 between David Warner and Manprit Juneja. Mahela Jayawardene's promotion to the opening position clicked against Mumbai Indians, when he made 59, but today his innings ended on 4 when he edged Praveen Kumar to slip. Roelof van der Merwe's promotion to No.3 didn't work as he top-edged Parvinder Awana to cover. It set a pattern for the evening as several batsmen from both sides perished to top-edges.

Perhaps it was the slow nature of the Kotla track that prompted Kings XI to bring in the seamer Harmeet Singh, known for his back-of-the-hand slower balls. Playing his first game of IPL 2013, replacing Manpreet Gony, Harmeet was hammered for a four and a six by Virender Sehwag off consecutive balls in his first over. In his second, he frustrated Sehwag with his slower balls, forcing the batsman to improvise. Sehwag looked to open up, made room and ended up scooping the ball low to extra cover, where Mandeep Singh timed his dive well and took the catch.

Warner gave the innings some impetus with a flurry of boundaries in one over by Piyush Chawla, taking 16 off it. The stand between Warner and Juneja was the only period in which Daredevils had a semblance of control, until Harmeet steered the momentum Kings XI's way in his second spell. Juneja pulled a slower ball, bowled short, straight to fine leg, before Kedar Jadhav top-edged to extra cover in the same over.

The boundaries dried up with the procession of wickets and it only increased the pressure on Warner. The drought lasted four overs before Warner clipped Praveen behind square leg, before the bowler knocked the base of the base off stump with a swinging yorker. In the end, Daredevils limped to 120, in contrast to the record-shattering pyrotechnics earlier in the evening by Chris Gayle and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Adam Gilchrist fell three balls into the chase, trying to smash his way into form and convince his franchise he can still hold his position in the team, seeing how certain franchises are grappling with the issue of non-performing overseas captains. Mandeep gave the chase momentum with scoops and cuts off the seamers, but a promising knock was cut short thanks to a direct hit by Warner. A top-edge sent back Manan Vohra and at 70 for 4 in the tenth over, Daredevils had narrowed the gap a bit. However, David Miller ensured no further jitters as he and David Hussey took Kings XI closer.

dd please remove manprit juneja he wastes lot of balls instead take v rao since he can hit sixes easily and he is a good finisher and please drop irfan pathan, shish nehra and agarkar

Not sure why Morkel keeps getting ignored. Last year, it probably cost them the tournament. But, DD just doesn't seem to learn from their mistakes. Russell is too expensive really to call him an all-rounder. Botha at best is a container, and more of a nudger with the bat playing cute shorts even when the situation demands solidity. Same for Jeevan Mendis who probably looks lost & as if he's in the wrong place. van der Merwe is an inspired selection. Atleast the guy puts in 200% everytime, is a decent bowler, hard to hit of the park, very good fielder & can get a few quick runs. They should have seeked replacements for Pietersen & Ryder, but didn't even do that. Extremely disappointed with their strategies.

Now Venugopal Rao should be in the Playing IX for the Delhi. He is a very good middle order batsman, who can strengthen Delhi's bating in the middle order.

Why sehwag not learning?? He dnt know anything how to go.. Very unpredictable and unrelaible player. Jaywardne u cant become warner/sehwag.. Ur decision to open the ining looks good when u r chasing bt not whn u r batting first. Delhi coach staff is also working blindly. Picking those players which never fits in t20 format. U please check your last year records. Juneja n jadhav may be gud in domestic or odi format bt no where fit in t20 format. Where is chand, Ojha, Venugopal rao?? Nadeem who is quite impressive n hv best economic bowler was not picked in this game. Do u think botha is a all rounder?? He is may be his own country bt not here.. Delhi hv given chances to those player who can never win matches 4u. Ur middle over batsman cant hv the ability to handle the pressure. If sehwag warner out early it seems ur match is over in just 3-4 over.. Dd ur time is gone its now too late to react. Hope u will learn by watching other teams.. Thanx

Only David Miller Is playing Gud and fantastic cricket for KingsXI all overseas players are waste ..he should be made the captain and drop gilly.

@TSJ07: you are absolutely spot on. They must include harris againt RCB and azar mahmood on slow tracks. Go Kings Rock!!!

It is insane to ask the head of Gilli in place of others, as at times you need a level head to think aggression and calmness together which none other than Gilli fits the bill cleanly and beyond any doubt.

CSK lover yet vouch for Mohali...

Loving in full by witnessing the singh's, chawlas, P's doing the business with the help of greats...

Thanks a lot to IPL for exposing these young Indians to International dressing room.

KXIP has started to roll its cards right now. The selection of team was good seeing the condition and history of pitch. Now they have only one big decision to make, i.e. Replace Gilchrist, although Lehman would not give up easily. But with 3 Big youngsters who have been scoring good in T20 leagues, Gilchrist hardly had a chance... KXIP should look up for changes, with 3(DH(C)/ LP/TM/SM) overseas batsmen, 1 all rounder (AM) , 3(PK/PA/MG) pacers from India, 1 Leggie (PC), 1 Keeper(NS), 2 Batsman( MS/MV/GM). TEAM CAN MAKE TO PLAYOFFS

Delhi, What are you doing? Why Johan Botha? And considering him a batsman cost delhi two or three matches! You think Juneja is better batsman than Chand? Yes Juneja can be a better batsman in ODI,not in T20,he can rotate strikes only can not clear boundary.Naman Ohja is a better batsaman than Kedar Jadav and he is a specialist WK.Why you need 4 pacers in all the matches? You can iclude Yogesh Nagar he is useful with his offbreaks ar you can try Pawan Negi instead of Agarkar/Nehra.Where is Morne Morkel? Mahela,Veeru,Warner,Chand,Ohja,Yogesh Nagar,I Pathan,Morne Morkel,Relof,Umesh,Shahbas nadeem/Pawan Negi this is the best availale team for DD Milind Kumar of Delhi is better than Juneja in T20

@shrastogi : you are taking about winning against sides ranked 7, 8 & 9.. then what a win is a win. You must remember that mumbai lost to delhi and chennai lost to pune, you cannot take anyone lighty. What matters the most is the pionts on the board.

Good win for KXIP. They won it comfortably after their moral boosting win over PWI the previous day. The way they started chase against DD it showed the confidence they have in them now for future matches. Initially I was against Gilly's inclusion but now that most batsmen are in form and now team combination is good with all 4 foreign players are batsmen and all Indian bowling attack Gilly should be in the team as he has made some great decisions during tight matches.Like yesterday any other capatain would have chosen to bat 1st after the way 1st match went. Azhar should also be considered depending upon pitch and match condition for he gives more than 100% for his team. Harris should only be considered against RCB and at home they should ask for green wicket which will be their best chance against Gayle.

Delhi's team selection was horrible.....How in this world u can drop the only decent bowler in the team???? And what Botha is doing in this team????Botha is not even club class without his doosra. Three changes that too of a winning combo is insane to me.I think DD are digging their grave for themselves.

While Ajay Jadeja was singing praises about Kings XI wins the fact remains that all of them have come against sides ranked 7, 8 & 9 in the points table. KKR is the only big team they have beaten so he needs a reality check. Though wins are wins and should give any team confidence there are sterner tests ahead for them and they need to keep their house in order. At the current form Gichrist doesnt merit a place in the side. So they need to find a captain and wk to replace him. Because of his age if he makes a keeping mistake it gets highlighted more as was in the second game against Warriors. Only overseas player which hs made impact for them is Miller winning two games. Hussey has also been below par as you need big contributions from him not just 15-20 runs. So Punjab team needs to prepare well else things would be like what it has been in previous seasons.

Gilchrist should make way for Shaun Marsh and David Hussy be the captain. Azar Mahmood should also be replaced. P.S: Only 6 comments in this counter as compared to 201 in RCB Gayle counter !!!!!

i am big staunch of gilchrist batting down the order may be like 3rd or 4th down til hit some form, its just waste if opens batting for kings 11 and on top that his failure adds pressure to rest of the batsmen. For delhi Shewag and mahela are perfect opening pair but warner should must bat 1 down. They got to play cooper some how.

Posted by SidsIPLTeam on (April 23, 2013, 21:32 GMT)

Everyone is complaining that Gilchrist's should drop himself and retire. And true, going by statistics alone. But, even a T20 side needs a good captain like him. Against popular belief that anyone can be made captain, here, matches are won/lost in a matter of a few balls inspite of the losing team doing 95% correct. The other day, Finch did everything right, but forgot to bowl Rahul Sharma out in time & was left stranded with the not so regular Wright, eventually conceding the match. A bit more planning & he could've saved Dinda, who bowls a good yorker, to sneak in a win. The other match could've been KKRs, had Gilchrist not saved PK's ball from going for 5 wides. An overseas player has to win about 3 matches on his own to justify selection & there's every chance he'll do it in the coming 9. In addition, he's the wicket-keeper, & replacing him means 2 changes, with a proper batsman compromised. Not sure that is needed yet, as long as Punjab wins. Hopefully they won't get carried away.

Yes! Delhi team selection was horrible. Shame very shame.. Why u pick Juneja all the time?? The way he bat he cant look like any batsman from any angle.. Why Jadav?? Why not Ojha?? Ojha hv century in t20 and hv the ability to hit big. Similary chand.. One thing Jaywardne cant become cris gale

Posted by Temuzin on (April 23, 2013, 17:54 GMT)

Delhi's team selection is flawed. And why they dont play Unmukt. He is a dashing opening batsman and will be better than Mahela and Sehwag.

Posted by RiznyF on (April 23, 2013, 17:50 GMT)

Even though DD put a very average team performance, they won against MI due to outstanding individual performances by Sehwag and Mahela. They should have been consistent with rheir XI. Making one change is acceptable but 3 changes including your most successful bowler in a spin friendly wicket is unacceptable. Venugopal was not given a fair opportunity. They needed a quality wicket taking bowler or a batsman who could bowl 4 overs ( Morkel or Mendis). DD were unlucky to lose a few matches but this loss was due to a blunder made by DD management. You cant play Van de merwe and Botha in the same ream since they need a solid middle order batsman instead. Hope other teams learn from DD's mistakes. Its also dissapointing that DD can't assess their home conditions appropriately.

Every time camera focused on Mahela's face, I was like "Why God ? :( ". It is so painful to see someone like Mahela (who is leading his team) losing so badly. Lost 7 out of 8 matches. Those innocent looks on his face couldn't stop me from posting this comment. :(

He needs to play anchor's role but he got out early, Sehwag tried, Warner tried. But it was never going to be enough.

Feeling for Mahela, Viru, Warner, Mushtaq Ahmed, Eric Simmons and Umesh Yadav.

I can feel what the atmosphere would be like in DD dressing room.

agarkar 1 ovr 4 runs for what gud was mahela waiting that he didnt even think to give him another over and finally delhi loses again and am sure make their way for next yr ipl to qualify for playoffs drop mahela get someone else at toporder he is of no gud for dd

The first man deserved to be dropped from the playing xi of punjab team is Gilly himself, not Mahmood...
