Mumbai Indians v Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2013, Mumbai April 29, 2013

A one-handed stunner, and Rauf's lucky escape

Plays of the day from the IPL game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab in Mumbai

The six
Dinesh Karthik is an attractive batsman to watch when in full flow, and he was at his stylish best when he picked Praveen Kumar for a six over fine leg. He charged out to Praveen in the fifth over, picked the length and swung him with a swivel flat into the stands. Among all sixes struck in the Mumbai Indians innings, Karthik's whip stood out.

The wake-up call
Dwayne Smith's innings was of two halves. During the first, he struggled to get bat on ball and limped to 8 off 20 balls. The second, during which he made up for his initial troubles, began with a thunderous straight drive off the leg-spin off Piyush Chawla, absolutely drilled past the bowler. Smith's last 12 deliveries produced 25 runs.

The banter
Manpreet Gony bowled an expensive spell but there was a moment's relief when he bowled Kieron Pollard, off a full toss that the batsman dragged onto his stumps. Gony celebrated and gave Pollard a send-off, only for replays to show he had bowled a no-ball. Pollard smiled, walked back towards the crease and gave back some, though it was all in good spirit.

The catch

Against Chennai Super Kings in an earlier clash, Pollard had timed his jump to perfection at deep midwicket to catch MS Dhoni in the final over of the chase and help Mumbai Indians to victory. He bettered that effort against Kings XI Punjab. Shaun Marsh middled Pragyan Ojha as he tried to clear long-on, but didn't get the elevation he would have liked. Pollard was patrolling the boundary, standing at the edge of the rope, and held out his huge right palm and clasped the ball with a leap before ensuring he retained his balance as he came down.

The escape

Umpire Asad Rauf was in the firing line when Azhar Mahmood smashed one back past Pragyan Ojha. Rauf ducked, just in time, as the ball flew over his head and crashed into the boundary. He could still afford a smile after that escape, and motioned to the dug-outs to bring out a helmet for protection.
