Struggling teams look to leave the bottom third

Big Picture

Teams usually go into the IPL targeting one win more than half the matches they play, and then take it from there. Nine has been the magic number all captains have been talking about. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils have played nine games each, and are six and seven wins away from that magic number.

The phrase captains quote most is about doing things right and letting results take care of themselves. Knight Riders and Daredevils haven't quite been able to do that so far. Knight Riders have relied on spin, but their local batsmen have let them down. Daredevils have the big names in both the batting and bowling department, but they haven't fired as much as they would have liked.

They don't have much time left, and need to start winning consistently to keep the league interesting. The halfway point is way too early for teams to be ruled out of the playoff stakes.

In the spotlight

What has Twenty20 reduced Jacques Kallis to? In the last match, bogged down by his tournament strike rate of 106, with others failing to make up around him, he premeditated a ramp, and ended up playing from well wide of off with eyes nearly closed to get dismissed. He looks stylish when he bats, he is a classy batsman without doubt, but he shouldn't have to resort to such ugly shots.

Mahela Jayawardene, David Warner and Morne Morkel usually take the three overseas slots for Daredevils, but they haven't been able to sort out their fourth foreign player. They have tried Andre Russell, Johan Botha, Jeevan Mendis, Ben Rohrer and Roelof van der Merwe without any success. Will they go a step ahead and play with eight Indian players?

Stats and Trivia

  • Gautam Gambhir is the second highest run-getter in all IPLs, behind Suresh Raina, but he has hit the most fours: 280.
  • In nine matches, Daredevils' wicketkeepers put together have registered four dismissals, the worst per-match rate in the league.

Quotes

"Hi guys, continue your support, KKR flight has hit slightly rough weather....am sure we'll soon take control. Need your wishes"

All IPL matches will progress as decided. With top teams suddenly losing out to weaker teams so that there is a constant see saw in the points table as much as possible until it will not be possible any more.

    Today DD should win.

IPL 6 is fast losing its charm. In another three to four matches all the semi-finalists will be decided

Gambir again.and again .selecting kalis..give a change to Tendo....did u forget Tendo in ur Team????

  • TUPZ on May 1, 2013, 11:11 GMT

ITS too late for both KKR & DD to progress to the knockout stages in the season. They should now focus to keep them above PWI ,and definitely force the wooden spoon holders to achieve the WOODEN SPOON for the 3rd time in row. Incidentally both the teams home ground will host this years playoffs and final and what a golden opportunity they both are going to miss!!!! It will be again the CSK that will hold the IPL trophy for the 3rd time in 6 years in the iconic eden gardens for sure. MI and RCB the real losers of IPL will be one of the opponents in the final. One out of SRH ,RR and KXIP will make the 4th spot.

From next year onwards every team should made to play 6 home matches, 8 away matches and 2 neutral venue matches as this year DD,KKR & KXIP will be playing.

Brett lee should definitely play today. He is a class bowler and kkr should utilise him. Not many teams have a luxury of having someone of brett lee's calibre. Kallis should be rested. He's a great player but sometimes too slow which costs kkr alott!! Mcullum, lee, narine n morgan should be the 4 foreigners in the team.

  • on May 1, 2013, 10:23 GMT

Jacques Kallis needs some rest after his lacklustre form. Lee coming back would be a big addition to the side. They've been leaking a lot of runs. DD on the other hand, will have to Jeevan Mendis another chance. He's a good finisher and now with Warner taking that role, Mendis will have some cushion. Hope it's a good game! Viru needs to fire.

Main problem of KKR what I feel is choosing of 4 RIGHT Overseas Players. Looking at the current form of 4 Overseas players, I bliv McCullum, Morgan, Nairne and Lee should pe in first XI. Since Raipur is having little bouncy pitch, Lee is must and may be Tendo can be placed instead of McCullum. Rest 7 Indian should be GG, Bisla, Pathan, Bhatia, Das, Abdullah and Shami Ahmed. I think Shami would b much more effective bowler in Raipur considering the Pitch condition and looking into Balaji's form, Abdullah should get a chance, who can bat better than Balaji. Batting Order should be GG, Bisla, McCullam/ Tendo,Morgan, Pathan,Das, Bhatia,Lee, Shami, Abdullah, Narine. Batting order should be as per match condition. Either of Pathan orDas can be promoted for pich hitting is situation demands.Bowling option ll be also increased if Tendo is given a chance. Jai Ho....KKR

my playing 11 for delhi are.... Sehwag, Chand, Jayawardane, Warner, Jadhav, Rhorer, Irfan, Nadeem, Nehra, Yadav, Morkel continue tho older team they have gone against Warriors

what is happ. with KKR, they should rest Kallis, he is a great player but you need to give him some break.and you cant keep Haddin so long warming the bench, Lee should be in the squad, he his a great fast bowler, thats what KKR is missing they dont have a good fast bowler, trying too much with the spinner will not help..... the team i hope will play this match will be..

    1. Bisla, 2. Haddin, 3. Ghambir, 4. Morgan, 5. Pathan, 6. Manoj, 7. Bhatia, 8. Lee, 9. Narine, 10. Balaji, 11. Abdulla.

they should go with 4 full time bowlers, and Bhatia and pathan to bowl quick 2 overs each. and ghambir should bat in the middle order as KKR is missing consistency in the middle order... they cannot convert good starts.. so hope ghambir realize this before it is too late... I am with KKR always.. they will win today..

missing Shakib, local lads Laxmi n Manoj a lot,all 3 were instrumental in last year's victory............................................

  • Abbas67 on May 1, 2013, 4:37 GMT

Why are they not playing Gulam Bodi ? He can be a better option then rest of all !

  • RiznyF on May 1, 2013, 4:14 GMT

@Tal_Botvinnik. Yeah i think Van de Merwe and Jeewan Mendis have not got proper opportunities to prove themselves but the rest have and failed. Especially Jeevan Mendis, who's a genuine all-rounder (look at his stats) but rarely gets a chance to play. He's a utility player, who DD desperately need atm.

  • Tal_Botvinnik on May 1, 2013, 3:48 GMT

Give Jeewan Mendis a chance, all the others Andre Russell, Johan Botha, Ben Rohrer and Roelof van der Merwe. He only got 2 games and was unfortunately run out. All the others has not done anything worthy. Give Sid Kaul also a chance #Lets Build DD v.2014#

  • on May 1, 2013, 3:29 GMT

play tendo for Baz.. Kallis, Tendo,Morgan, Narine 4 over seas....

  • on May 1, 2013, 3:28 GMT

gulam bodi is an option instead of ben rohrer.he proved that he can bat brilliantly in the last clt20 championship.

  • Javed_17 on May 1, 2013, 2:16 GMT

@ Amit Roy nice to see a few of us exist out there :).. sad place to be for kkr. However the eternal optimism is always necessary. it took kkr 4 seasons to get to the semi final and on the 5th they won it. Generally slow to the pace but eventually they get it right.

I personally would like to see senanayake dropped. Excellent bowler no doubt but not a particular big turner and thats proven ineffective where batsmen slog the simple slower deliveries. Who i would pick - Ryan ten doeschate. I want him to have a chance. He played a few game saving knocks in ipl 4 and i think previous success warrants him a chance. KKR doesnt have a proper pace assault so when slow bowling fails kkr left in a bad position. Kallis Morgan Narine ten do would be quite effective where the extra batsman may prove necessary against a very aggressive side or stick with senanayake and hope for the best. Either way i still back kkr :)

  • roversgate on April 30, 2013, 22:26 GMT

KKR is in this position because of bad team management. Pathan hasn't performed for 3 years, someone else should have been tried a long time back. When you have two like for like replacements for Kallis in McLaren and Doeschate then Kallis should have been rested for a few games while others were tried. It's not too late to do it now, even though I think with the bowling also failing, they might want to bring back Lee. Things would have been different had Narine and Morgan kept constant while the other 2 spots been rotated instead of getting stuck on Kallis and Senanyenke. Senanyenke is a mystery spinner, on pitches like Bangalore, Delhi and Mohali they could have replaced him with someone else. I also think Bhatia should be promoted to #5 because he is in form as a batsmen and it would be nice for him to be given a little while before going for those big hits.

@Amit Roy. So now CSK has become a benchmark for the rest of the teams in IPL.

    That is a good news.

Soon it may be declared officially by the IPL board. CSR Rocks as usual.

No West Indians = No chance. Sorry Delhi, you lose.

  • RiznyF on April 30, 2013, 18:43 GMT

Two teams that were dominating IPL5 are now in the bottom third of the table. However, DD looks much better than what it was at the start of the season. Hope DD doesn't change its playing XI too much. However, drafting in a batting all-rounder for Rohrer seems like a good choice, when looking at the balance of the XI. Van de Merwe or Jeewan Mendis should be given a chance instead.

  • on April 30, 2013, 18:38 GMT

KKR XI should be like this: 1. gautam 2. Bisla 3.Mccullum 4. Morgan 5.Pathan 6.Das 7.Bhatia 8. Lee 9.Narine 10.abdulla 11.Balaji. KKR team management should give rest to struggling Kallis.
