MS Dhoni smacks one through the covers, Pune Warriors v Chennai Super Kings, IPL, Pune, April 30, 2013
A six down the ground, off the back foot © BCCI

Chennai Super Kings continued with their formula of going at roughly a run a ball for the first 10 overs, keeping wickets in hand, and then exploding to take 10 an over off the last 10. On a pitch on which the ball seamed and bounced variably, they reached 55 for 2 after 10 overs, but Suresh Raina, S Badrinath and MS Dhoni looted 109 in the rest of the innings to set up an easy 37-run, sixth consecutive win, which kept them at the top of the table and Pune Warriors at the bottom.

With the ball seaming around, Super Kings lost their openers for 28 runs, that too thanks to generous umpiring. However, out came their crisis man Badrinath, and did his job without any fuss. He and Raina added 75 off 59, without taking risks, and picking the rate up progressively. Raina kept providing the odd boundary, and Badrinath found the gaps for ones and twos.

It was in the 13th over that the real charge began. Badrinath drove consecutive deliveries from Rahul Sharma down the ground and through point for fours to take his strike past 100. Raina's was already a healthier strike rate, but he accelerated by sending Kane Richardson over midwicket for a six in the next over.

Badrinath fell in the 16th over, but he and Super Kings will know he fell at just the right time, after just the right innings of 34 off 31. Dhoni came out and took four and six off the first two balls he faced. The six was a demoralising - for the fielding side - punch off the back foot, over extra cover.

Dhoni then took apart Ashok Dinda, a bowler he is often criticised for not giving enough chances. He took 25 off eight Dinda's deliveries, two of them swept boundaries, and one a six off the last ball of the innings. Seamlessly Raina went from being the dominant partner in the earlier partnership to taking back seat and watching Dhoni subdue the bowlers. Along the way he brought up his second half-century of the season.

The target was bigger than ever chased in Pune, which became more daunting because of the seam movement available. Mohit Sharma, the Haryana fast bowler who has been the find of the season for Super Kings, utilised it to end the chase for all intents and purposes with an unbroken four-over spell. With successive deliveries in his first over, he got rid of Aaron Finch and T Suman. He missed the hat-trick, but got Yuvraj Singh to edge behind, making it 43 for 4 in the fifth over. There was no way back from there.

Guys.. guys... How many of you notice the way CSK played this match.. is third time out of the 10 games they played where the Top order fails and the middle order batsmen (badri) just sticks there and score 30 odd runs @ the rate of run a ball.. without loosing anymore wickets and at the end of the game the tail enders comes out with a license to go there and hit as far as they could.. This this and this wat make the difference from the rest of the teams playing IPL.. A real Champion Signature.. I see most of the team lose their games once their top order fails.. Nobody can't argue this fact guys.. It happened for MI,RCB,KKR.. CSK stands different (a winning way) from the rest only by this character.. It is the only team which made more than 40 odd runs in their last 3 overs while chasing the total for more than couple of times.. they knew how to do.. rest of the teams have to learn..

Dhoni hit 45 runs while raina and Mohit did most of the work and scored 63 runs and 3-12 and got himself the MoM. Perera hit 31 runs, picked 2 in-form international bat's wickets and scored a run-out of a aggressive marsh and it was mishra who picked 3 wickets of some unknown out of form players (Nayar,Pandey,Singh) got the MoM. The Judgement panel is too biased. Once MSD scored 37 odd runs vs Pakistan and got himself MoM while his sprited bowlers bowled out of their guts. This is great injustice. I am sure they will give MSD the MoS even if his side's don't win the IPL.

Still some more wins needed to stay top 2 of the table. And CSK is the only team having an allrounder with purple cap. Thats what amazing stuff. Away games with bangalore and mumbai is not so easy, but it gonna be a nail biting match.

Posted by ramli on (May 1, 2013, 8:09 GMT)

2nd_slip ... purists will always be thrilled if the ball is cleanly connected and does not look ugly ... that is the innovation any purist will buy ... what MSD did was in this category ... when people like Gavaskar/Boycott don't complain ... so what?

Wow!! Clinical performance from the lions.Post - Match Interview with dhoni suggest that they are in mood to dominated throughout.Good Intensity. The only team is good enuf to post a threat this year it will be RR.But Would love CSK to beat RR,RCB and MI in their own ground. i wondered how badrinath repeatedly without any flaw constructs this type of innings over the period of six seasons without any failure. According to me, In ipl3 against Kings eleven while chasing 190 odd runs to qualify for semis, he scored 53 at strike rate of 147, and in ipl4 playoff against bangalore partnered with raina chasin 180 odd runs, another important innings against mumbai in first playoff in ipl5 are VERY BEST under pressure. AFTFR EVERY DIASASTOUR THERE IS ONE HOPE, for CSK it is BADRINATH.

People often talk about Gayle-Storm but Dhoni-Dhamal is also strong wind with more effect. See, how!

Chris Gayle(RCB) 10 10 484 166.89 (Strike Rate)

MS Dhoni(CSK) 10 9 298 172.25 (Strike Rate)

T20 is all about Strike Rate

Not sure why Pune is continuing with superflop players such as Dinda, Nayar, Suman, Manish Pandey, Uthappa, Rahul Sharma etc. They have very good bench strength. But, none of the bence players is given opportunity till date. Pune can win only when they decide to drop usual superflops and give opportunity to bench players.

@everybodylovessachi, CSK have won all the away games that they have played so far, its only the 2 home games that they have lost till now. I think your comment comes from the fact that CSK hasnt played away games in Mumbai and Blore yet, its not their fault. wait for ur turn ;)

Posted by Pavinasen on (May 1, 2013, 6:44 GMT)

CSK has enough games to experiment for the best 11.I would like to see some srilankans in the away games.

Posted by VinodGupte on (May 1, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

they should fold the PWI team. they play poor and have no fan following. lesser teams and lesser games will only make IPL more successful.

Posted by sweetspot on (May 1, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

@TheUltimateTruth - Without Dhoni? CSK 25 runs short? Who are we kidding here? Bravo or Albie can be equally devastating. Remember Albie's 28 runs in 6 balls? Bravo or Jadeja can also whack very effectively. In any case, CSK DO have MSD, and the difference was still more than 30! There was simply NO way Pune could have won. They were trampled upon by a team that was relentless on their day.

Posted by KK_Cricket on (May 1, 2013, 6:30 GMT)

People only singing laurels of how good Chennai are and yes, they have really played well with luck favoring them in 2-3 games.. But Pune, just can't believe the quality in the side they have and they cannot go on to win the games.. If you analyze their games, they have performed really badly in death overs.. And Allan Donald being a bowler himself should have definitely set this right.. And its sad that none of the losing teams have Plan B. Before every match, 3-4 opposition players should be focused upon and their should be a plan to contain them.. And if you notice, Dhoni likes pace on the bat and is not very comfortable against spin early in his innings.. why not hold back bowler like Rahul Sharma for an over and why not bowl Yuvraj against Dhoni.. Remember Dhoni is prone to spin early in his innings.. these small things can win you games..but lack of preparation is baffling.. And Dinda, why not try slower bouncer or quick bouncer? Rather he goes for slower ball.. which is wacked

If CSK reaches play offs ( they sure will) it is an achievement in itself, being the only team to have reached the top 4 in all editions of IPL. Anything can happen in play offs. You have seen what happened to top team RCB against MI the other day. Any team can beat any other team on their day. Win or lose, you can be sure CSK will fight till the end and entertain us all.

For the people who are saying chennai is peaking at the right time, and saying csk will get the cup this time,,,, Just remember that Delhi Dare Devils said the same last year :-)

Posted by   on (May 1, 2013, 5:43 GMT)

@caught_knott i disagree with you because CSK also have an array of superstars like RCB/MI...so how can u say they dont have razzle dazzle ? all players are (except mohit sharma ) are regular in their respective International teams and also playing in key positions !

Posted by StevieS on (May 1, 2013, 5:36 GMT)

Pune need a player in their squad that can score big runs, someone who also has international captaincy experience, someone who is out of form but is a class above every other foreign player in the team. They should of stuck with Taylor as as the saying goes, form is temporary ....

Posted by SL_rockz on (May 1, 2013, 5:35 GMT)

Albie,Jadeja,Bravo ..... When will they a chance to bat :)) ..Hmmm i donot know how to make them play in the game for 3 ,4 overs. CSK's batting line up is that much strong and No room for number 6,7,8.... to come and hit few balls outta park...Amazing .I didn't saw such a consistence batting from any intl team as well...It is really making a horrible mountain to climb before an opposition 2 beat CSK... Next stage is set to Beat MI at wankhade !!!! Hell CSK should take revenge and break that fortress into pieces ...Come on make MI pay for what they did in chennai....They broke our fortress so why shouldnot we ??? Break it !! Make MI fear of wnakhade..

@siri12345 : It is a revenge time, CSK will make it in Mumbai. Remember 2010 final, in Mumbai, CSK crowned their c'ship. MSD can have a rare failiure, but it is rare, most of the times he & CSK makes it. It might be the last ball, last over or the last game , CSK dominates. Check the history :-)

Posted by ThilankaK on (May 1, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

Yes, Anjelo is not a good captain for T20's BUT he has to play all matches, you can easily put Yuver Raj as a captain & play Flinch,Mathews,Smith & Kean Richerdson/Luke. ( Youvi Played all matches after anjelo sacked). Look captaincy effect flinch's batting also, seems he is under presser & not free flowing batsmen after put captaincy, @ warun sharma :- you are right mate , Allan Donald is the one who blamed, He messed PWI !!!

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (May 1, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

I really think the top order Saha Raina and Badrinath need to up the tempo a little with Bravo Morkel Jadeja all sat on the bench CSK should be pushing closer to 200 here ! Still a comprehensive win v self destructive Pune but v the better sides when battin first they need to up the rate because they bat all the way down.

Posted by Shaan99 on (May 1, 2013, 4:45 GMT)

Some people r talking about Mohit Sharma to pick in Indian side but as u know he is a medium pacer but at present time we need a fast bowler who can regularly bowl at 140km/h so that we can have that potential of bowling attack who can disturb the non-indian subcontinent batsman in their own pitches... I think if he works on his pace that it would be better for india.. But in view players like varun aron,Rahul shukla, shami ahmed, awana,ms gony who have potential to bowl regularly at 140 kmh should pick in indian side for overseas tour

Remeber the ipls where MI and DD ran thru the matches and wat happened .they lost tamely, t20is unpredictable, i think csk shud lose 2 matches on the trot to keep them on their toes, finalky msd has come down to no 5 from no 8.

One moment of silence for Pune Warriors India and Allan Donald, please (Everybody including CSK fans).

Posted by marvin_antony on (May 1, 2013, 3:35 GMT)

In addition to orange and purple caps, a new colored cap should be given to the team captain with the most wins. His contribution to the team is critical and gets his team over the line but is never rewarded any time. He doesn't even get MOM award unless he scores big or gets wickets.

Posted by caught_knott_bowled_old on (May 1, 2013, 3:21 GMT)

As a CSK fan this was special match; for I could predict CSK's plan right through. Badri coming in early. 100~110 runs in the last 10 overs. Medium pacers correcting their past mistakes and bowling better lines. And in the end, a win for CSK. CSK's strategy to have a super-strong batting line up is coming is the key. Their strategy to have all-rounders gives MSD a lot of options. Their emphasis on fielding has resulted in choking the opposition regularly. All in all, the on-field brilliance is a result of fantastic planning by the team coaches and management. They may not go for the razzle-dazzle of RCB/MI, but have figured out HOW to be consistent in this T20 format. Fantastic!

Idk wat other think here im not gonna Take any side Bcoze Im a 1oo% MI fan..... PwI should know the worth of subcontinent players as well West indians player(as west olso have slow pithes) Player like Tamin they missed but they should take the full worth of Angelo True that He doesnt have a good record on playing subcontinent pitchs as His best knocks has come from England and Australia but still From his birth he is playing in subcontinet pitches.... Giving chances to Australian who are @ low ranking ..... Speially less experience austalians is a wastage of there resources I think Finch Smith Angelo Luke should play And give young indian bowler to handle rest of the job As the are indian...though they not internationally recogonized the are born to play in these pitches

I'm a huge CSK fan, but owing to the law of averages, CSK's winning run will eventually come to an end. But, as a CSK fan, I hope it ends against someone like KXIP whom we have already defeated once in the tournament rather than a team like MI, against whom we should seek revenge. But, I hope that the NRR doesn't suffer too badly.

@ravi kiran lol are u day dreaming.csk to beat mumbai in wankhede????????.they couldnot beat mumbai in chennai too lol so sad .and mind it there is a huge difference between thrashing guys like dinda, kumar and some reddy in last over and thrashing malinga in last over.if u remember in cb series india required just 8 runs in last over against malinga and ur powerful dhoni still couldnot win the match for india which atlast cost a place in the final for india.cricinfoplz publish.

Yuvraj's wicket summed himself up and what I've been saying about him and every IPL side he's been in ! Selfishly turned down Smiths easy 2 cos he thought he could smash the local Indian bowler around boosting his own score and then gets out very next ball PRICLESS ! hahaha

Like navjot sidhu said, i had a feeling that csk is peeking too early unlike the last 5 editions.this may endup csk being complacent in semifinals.:-/

Dhoni might be one of the highest paid cricketers in the IPL but what a bargain buy he is for CSK !

Posted by EverybodylovesSachin on (May 1, 2013, 1:42 GMT)

CSK do not bank their trophy/cup by winning against poor teams in the table. Pune beat them when they were not on the top of the table. They have the momentum by winning three games at home and this one after those three at Pune...Real test begins for CSK when they start playing away against good teams. I do not think they will win the cup this time...Good Spell check feature cricinfo.

Posted by TheUltimateTruth on (May 1, 2013, 0:47 GMT)

Without Dhoni CSK would have been about 20-25 runs short, and that could have made a huge difference in the chase. Dhoni played some clever shots, not just the bludgeon over long on or midwicket, that dealt effectively with the PWI field placements and their line and length. As for Pune, I don't think Angelo or Ross Taylor are the answer, they have failed consistently. In fact, I can't think of the last time Taylor scored decently in the IPL -- it's been far too long. Pune has nearly the best 11 they have from the squad. Drop Dinda and play someone else, that should help.

Posted by IndCricFan2013 on (May 1, 2013, 0:31 GMT)

Being MSD is much harder than being anyone else. Gayle can come in play out few overs if he needs it, can score 175, then score couple of low scores, still keeps Orange cap and strike rate. MSD needs to come in start scoring from ball one, can not fail, if he fails, CSK formula, getting 100 in last 10 or chasing 50 runs in 3 overs fails. It is very hard being MSD, he keeps doing it, MSD after playing the last ball to six couple times, run in fast to get his quick break and grabs his wicket keeping gloves and back to business to setup fields, start thinking what to do next, who will bowl to situation etc, etc he goes on and on. A match in Chennai goes until 1 AM, he can not sleep, he tweets good morning at 6 AM and goes to bad, wakes up in the evening, catches a flight to Pune, starts another match, same routine;Says, T20 demands a lot, but does not want to rest players, says every one needs to be in groove, so that they can win the cup. back to Chennai, next match in a days time MSD!!!

Posted by krajk on (April 30, 2013, 22:05 GMT)

Stephen Fleming is the man behind the scene for CSK's success. He is one of the best in business and clearly resourceful in managing and coaching the team. Stephen off field and Dhoni on field are the best leaders for CSK. Hope he gets the India Job in the future.

Posted by SidsIPLTeam on (April 30, 2013, 21:40 GMT)

Pune is a case study! Why they don't manage to win matches despite having one of the better teams on paper is a mystery beyond all the mystery spinners in this competition.. If you try to pin-point factors, you probably won't be able to find reasons -

1. Opening Batsmen: Finch & Uthappa -- Good Enough 2. Middle Order: Yuvraj -- Fantastic & Taylor / Samuels / Nayar / Pandey / Manhas / Suman -- Very Capable 3. Finishers: Angelo Matthews / Luke Wright & Steven Smith -- Sensational 4. Bowling: R.Sharma, A.Dinda, B.Kumar -- All India Team Bowlers 5. Overseas Bowler: K.Richardson/M.Marsh/W.Parnell/A.Mendis -- Decent 6. Management: Allan Donald / Praveen Amre

As they are no longer in contention they should just free their mind & play positively without thinking about winning or losing, that way, taking away all the undue pressure & attention away from them.

Would suggest a complete re-jig of the Squad in Next Year's IPL Auction 2014 like KKR did & hope for success.

Theres nothing more painfull to a cricket purists eye than watching Dhoni batting. He would make a wonderfull baseball player. The only difference between him and a number 11 who swings his bat and hopes for the best is that he connects with the ball 95% of the time.

Dhoni always get the best team in IPL. this time dhoni's team like an international team with hussey, raina, dhoni himself, du plesis, morkel, chris morris, ashwin and many!and all are in good form! management and cauches have motivated them well.as a batsman dhoni is in superform like hussey! only simillar team has kohli. But Kohli is poor and not superior as dhoni in captaincy thats why they are low in the table. MI and Dravid also get a good team with planty of in-form players and skills. according to that facts SRH is the best team in IPL they performing well with medicore players! Dhoni is not best captain in this IPL as his descision cannot harm other team in death overs batting first~

Way to go CSK...Two players from CSK just behind the Orange & Purple Caps...Hussey & Bravo...

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 30, 2013, 19:48 GMT)

I do not care whether management will understand his role and ability to handle pressure and win games over luke wright .As long as SLC will play him for SL , I do not care whether he will be picked or not for PWI .It is not my concern .But said what i see as the best option..My overseas players for pune are angelo, steve,Finch ,Kane. If mathews or any other does not do well in next matches or so immediately replace them.No excuses.Ending note for commenting wish you all the best for CSK.You are My team and wish for your win every time and one last thing ANgelo mathews is the captain of WORLD NO 1 T20 side and until now his capabilities are not fully utilized in PWI.

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 30, 2013, 19:37 GMT)

Mathews is more kinda responsible payer who needs to bring the team home. Some times a bad shot may fail him and fail to make the team to the shore. But that attitude and Role is something a team will need badly.Luke doesnt have that role or character. And the 7.06 econ rate will give mighty help in death overs.Luke bowled horribly and should not bowl at the depth.Mathews more than handy for that purpose.PWI today also gave heck of runs to CSK at final 4 .Mathews will give that economical spell at start and middle and one over at the end.Imagine all 5 bolwers were like him an opposition can score only 140 runs.Simple as that. With fielding both are even .Good fielders. In batting, luke got one innings r8 but capacity to handle pressure and bulid up an innings is more with mathews. He is doing the same role for SL team as well and have sailed them to shore more often than not.So Mathews is always there to steady a ship when needed and can blast when it is needed at the end.

Posted by Rockers-Chennai on (April 30, 2013, 19:32 GMT)

CSK will stay on number 1 spot in ipl until they have dhoni as a captain...to be a best captain, one should have a good relationship with all his teammates - Dhoni is the only man have this quality(in the form of smile)....

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 30, 2013, 19:23 GMT)

@Sundhar Mohandas ; I'm biased ??? well, that's funny. I mean you guys had been blaming Mathews for PWI's bad run all along until he was dropped, even though it wasn't a fault of his captaincy. It was you who were being biased to blame one person when the whole team was struggling. Now Its my turn to have a bit of fun. LOL.

Speaking of death bowlers, Mathews is one of the best death bowlers. He has excelled in death bowling in International arena. He may be outta his form lately, but he is a good economical bowler n a good captain. He is after all a protege of legendary Mahela.

Posted by Lovetesh on (April 30, 2013, 19:22 GMT)

CSK is clearly the most consistent team in IPL but I still feel that they are too dependent on Hussey and Dhoni. Bowling is still effective but it is not as effective as it was in the first three IPL's when they had Muralitharan.

Turning around PWI is an acid test for any coach. They had players, staff...everything that a team needs still they give such a bad result that too consistently for three consecutive year. Something is wrong there.

Posted by SL_rockz on (April 30, 2013, 19:20 GMT)

One bad shot selection from mathews and So it is done and dusted for him in this IPL.:) I donot know that way of judging players.Pardon me for that.Every body finds it is the best reason ti keep him out of playing XI. .Then i donot understand why keep sachin when he selected narine to play that shot and get bowled and i donot understand How many bad shots he played to get out in this IPL during 9 matches and still he is comfortably in playing XI.It must be something only valid for Overseas spots i guess.Confused !! Even toady steve played nothing shot when he and Kane were just building a partnership which looked bit good.No one calls that a bad shot.Bad shot is Bad for eveyone. And it is a joke believing that batsmen will never play a bad shot in their career or in IPL it self.It happens. But that short sighted mentality should not come in assesing his performance with that poor shot. Peace..

At the end of the day My fav won :) Go CSK go !!!! They are so strong side and just away from qualifying to semi's .You believe still 5 to 6 odd matches remaining to play :) WOW!! that was some achievement. Now you all see what is it that brings you when you act and work as a professional body.CSK always the only prof side in IPL .Look how professionally they move forward. Now we have 4 point breathing space. But you hear Dhoni ,No room for resting players and he wants his best side to play. You can see the so called professionalism in those words. He knows that his team are in semi's now. but look at the attitude of Dhoni. He is saying that he needs to win every time he plays with his full strength team...:) In Post-match presentations he always say no matter how good they won d match , that they still need 2 improve some areas. It sums up the day man!! How could such a team loose the next match !!!

@ Ravikini CSK is the most followed team in all of social media next to Mumbai Indians (Understandably) Statistics are showing that the CSK fanfare is rising exponentially this year too (They just hot 2 million in Facebook). If you have a chance to Visit Chennai, take a stroll around the Chepauk and you'll know the love of the people for the team. You can often find the KKR/MI crowd slashing at their own players after a lose, but CSK has a loving and passionate fan base following them no matter what :) Even the pune crowd was cheering for them today. They make a match out of everything don't they (today a exception), which makes people to keep following them :) Like you are even though being an RCB fan :)

Lost with Ganguly lost with clarke lost with Mathews and Lost badly with Finch!! So bad.Something is wrong with PWI .Not with the captaincy .All except Finch has captained their national teams and i do not want mention how good their captaincy was to their teams.Recent past i can recall most of fans bashed badly on Angelo.I can see no they themselves got answers. They needed Finch chased Angi .Now you can see results on your own.5 losses in a row.Happy now. Most of the fans express their views bashing some players when they fail twice or thrice with that spontaneous thoughts. But they all fail to analyse and give their views.Emotions do not always show the right way.In cricket , plz keep away that shocking emotions that you got immediately after the match and wait until you come to the mood and comment .Mathews will make a difference if he was in as captain rather than Finch .Not always runs could asses a captain.Angi leads World no 1 side and that reflect he is an impact leader.

@Tat_Bot: Good try but big fat lie.

Perera has played 8 out of the 9 matches his team has played and has bowled 31 overs - just one over short of maximum he could have bowled.

Malinga has played 7 out of the 9 matches his team has played and has bowled 28 overs - maximum he could bowl.

Only Vinay Kumar has bowled significantly high number of overs (39.5). Other Indian bowlers are in the range of 22 - 34 overs. Many of them have bowled less than Malinga. In fact, M S Gony, a local Indian bowler who has never bowled in International cricket and has played in less matches/bowled less than Malinga has better strike rate and average and almost as many wickets as Malinga.

Dhonis style of betting should be taken as a bsse for defining the cricket shots. His helicopter shot should be taken as an example for changing the concept of batting. Hats of to his mental ability in andling tough situations. The entire crickting world should learn from his tactics. We are proud to see the grooming of a village lad into a leading cricketer and leading captain. All of us should be proud of him.

Posted by thinkgood on (April 30, 2013, 18:39 GMT)

The real man of the match is Badri . He is the unsung hero of CSK. Go CSK !

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:36 GMT)

Sachin has scored lot of runs but dhoni scores IMPORTANT runs.

Posted by AneYako on (April 30, 2013, 18:36 GMT)

@indra: You do realize Mathews is the most economical bowler the side had? You also realize Finch is atrocious as a captain? Not sure what deluded fantasy land you live in. Did you not watch the match? CSK couldn't have done any better lol They won with over 30 runs to spare and their batting absolutely thrashed the pune bowling. Whatever helps ya sleep at night I suppose

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:35 GMT)

@ravikini : BTW who told you CSK is the most hated team?? Its actually the most loved team in IPL. Its just you RCB/KKR fans who hate us cuz of sheer jealousy.

Posted by Shan156 on (April 30, 2013, 18:34 GMT)

oops, just read the news that Samuls returned to Jamaica due to an injury. That is unfortunate for PW.

@Tal_Botvinnik - My dear friend do not come to a conclusion with scrrenshots that is stored in your memory. Check the statistics. Faulkner is doing gr8. But, wot abt others.

And is it Azhar Mahmood who is backing P kumar or the vice versa.

Take a look at M Morkel's this year's record. Does he know to bowl yorkers ??

Another game another loss....once again, those selected proved they werent /arent match winners....Time for Mathews and Taylor to be given another chance...cant do any worse than the train wreck in place.

Posted by philipsmgp on (April 30, 2013, 18:31 GMT)

a good dish comes out from a cook with combination of proper spices. Pune warriors has it but their management really doesnt know how to use their players.Manish pandey is a good opener.Uthappa in the middle order would be a good finisher. Wright is not a great player than taylor or samuels(where is he).And certainly yuvraj or uthappa as the captain (would play with more intensity) They have to make a good shuffling and balance in the team which the CSK team management is really good at.Sorry for PUNE bad management.

Posted by Shan156 on (April 30, 2013, 18:30 GMT)

It beggars belief that PW would bench a player of the calibre of Marlon Samuels. He is a star and would have made a huge difference to PW's fortunes.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 30, 2013, 18:27 GMT)

@Indra Prakash HA HA Your analysis is crammed with assumptions. Mathews might not make a big impact with bat or ball but he is far better skipper than finch. After burdening finch with captaincy he started losing his form.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 30, 2013, 18:24 GMT)

@Anon. Ha Ha, Perera played few matches and still he has 10 wickets with an econ of 7.70.Anyway Malinga didn't play half of the games even though he didn't have any wickets he at least troubled C Gayle and bounced him. None of your above mentioned bowlers did that. Stats can be misleading sometimes, please read some of the articles in ESPN regarding stats first. He also has won them far more games than all of your bowlers combined.

Posted by philipsmgp on (April 30, 2013, 18:22 GMT)

i guess people have got answer for why badrinath is in the team. when quick wickets fall he is sent in to consolidate and he always delivers. It might be annoying to see at time when he doesnt (even if he tries) hit big.But at the end of the match it really proves how useful a innings he has played. As always said by Dhoni Badrinath is really a unsung hero.

Posted by sweet2hrme on (April 30, 2013, 18:22 GMT)

Yuvi is not 100 percent fit.

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:17 GMT)

Dhoni's batting is not pretty; its hammer and tong; beat the crap out of every ball he faces. But he is so effective. Can't believe his stats considering his style, bat handling is all wrong. This man is out of this world.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (April 30, 2013, 18:16 GMT)

Well Well Well... There is no Mathews to blame. 4th straight loss under the great captaincy of Finch !!! LOL . Mr. Donald must be lovin' it. I know I'm lovin' it, watching 'em crash n burn. LOL . And Mr. Wright, wow.. what a match (not)-winner he is. He dropped Raina at 20 something, then got Badrinath out n brought Dhoni to the crease :O , conceded 12 runs in his over and with the bat 2 runs out 6 deliveries. LOL . I mean c'mon... we all know why he isn't even in the ENG ODI playing XI. And he is replacing a player like Mathews here in the IPL. Btw well done CSK !!! a great team effort.

Posted by ANKITRCHANDAK on (April 30, 2013, 18:15 GMT)

i really surprise there decisipn playing with ashok dinda. I think there proper playingXl will be

Uthappa,finch,nayar,yuvraj,smith,luke write,parwez rasool,rahul sharma,kumar,marsh

Complete 4overs from nayar,sharma,bk, marsh/yuvi/write/rasool/smith

I guaranty they will come on winning track

Posted by crindex on (April 30, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

Ashwin's lack luster run this edition of IPL is really a concern. Badri is the unsung hero once again for CSK. Go CSK !!!!

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:13 GMT)

If Mathews would have have played, two things would have happened...CSK would have scored more and Pune warriors would have scored lesser. Mathews is a dibly dobly bowler and is out of form with the bat. So PWI are certainly not missing him.

@Tal_Botvinnik, I appreaciate ur love for Srilankan players, but learn to analyse in a neutral way.

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:11 GMT)

Still PWI hasn't got da right combination, Fr me Mathews should be there in da side leading da side. Today they didn't have a plan in chasing, were in with da Required Run Rate but just threw away their wickets in no time. PWI correct ur mistakes & come back strong in da next games.

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 18:07 GMT)

One man Made all the difference of win & lose its Clearly MSD Day no stopping him when he is in in calculated assault plan well played CSK Hard luck PWI better luck Next time

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (April 30, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

When wall no1 ( Hussey) falls, wall no2 (Badri) does it for CSK. Well done CSK. KXIP should learn how to pace the innings from CSK.

Posted by ravikini on (April 30, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

The CSK Jaggernaut rolls on. The most consistent and most hated team among all the IPL teams. I pray that Dhoni retains his form during T20 World cup. I wonder how come so many new names inducted in the team end up as star performers for CSK (read Mohit, Morris). Their coaching and support staff must be super professionals. Surprising that CSK does not boast a Orange cap or Purple cap holder, though they are run-away leaders in the league table. Ofcourse Hussey and Bravo are quite close to having one. To make the forthcoming matches played by CSK more interesting, they should have a handicap that they play only 15 overs while the opponent plays the full quota of 20 overs. Such is the supermacy of CSK. Being a RCB fan I fervently hope Kohli & co take a leaf or two from CSK and win the IPL this year. Orange and Purple caps are not enough this time.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 30, 2013, 18:00 GMT)

Major Changes Required. No chances of reaching the playoffs so better play some unknown players and spoil some parties.

1. A Finch 2.L Wright 3.S Smith 4.A Mathews 5.R Uthappa 6.E Dwivedi 7.A Majumdar 8.R Gomez.9.P Rasool 10.B Kumar 11.S Wagh.

Every body with to No.11 can bat and their are 5 seam options and 2 spin options.

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 17:54 GMT)

Anyways B Kumar Vinay Kumar Mohith Sharma Umesh Yadav even Ishanth sharma all are having better stats in this IPL than 'Yorkar' specialist Malinga and Thisara :)

Posted by Patdabac on (April 30, 2013, 17:54 GMT)

Hmmm 5 straight loses for Pune and Mathews didn't play a single of those games. Such a waste of talent, keeping good players like Taylor and Mathews benched. 2 weeks ago, these articles were full of idiots who have no knowledge of cricket whatsover screaming about individuals. Pune are full of overrated players like Yuvraj, Uthathpa, Dinda, Wright, ect ect... Failed with Ganguly as captain same with Clarke and Mathews as captain and will find it diffucult to win any games this year.

Posted by surajporeddy on (April 30, 2013, 17:44 GMT)

bring in marlon samuels for luke wright continue suman give him an other opportunity axe dinda out of the team try any other robin should turn his starts into match winning knocks.

Posted by AneYako on (April 30, 2013, 17:42 GMT)

Still no Mathews and still performing horribly. Some amazing management choices there. This is just hilariously bad. Forget about batting, his captaincy and bowling is really missed here I actually hope Mathews doesn't play...let those Pune 'warriors' who bashed him understand the reality with each and every game. Congratulations, your team is even worse than it was before, and it was pretty bad already.

Good to see the amazing performance of Yuvraj too lol At least B Kumar can bat better than him

Posted by ODOM1 on (April 30, 2013, 17:26 GMT)

Pune has one of WI better allround T20 player in Marlon Samuels, is he injured? They will continue to lose with players like these on the bench, I'm sorry.

Posted by Winsome on (April 30, 2013, 17:02 GMT)

Second time that sort of unlucky run-out has happened to Pune this year. They cannot pull a trick.

Posted by   on (April 30, 2013, 16:58 GMT)

@Tal_BotVinnik, you are here to degrade indian bowlers? Mohith sharma already given you a perfect answer and with that Chris Gayle storm B kumar bowled with an excellent ecconomy 5.23 today also he was good with 6 runs per over Parwinder Awana and Praveen Kumar is doing well for KingsXi Umesh Yadav always performing well for DD

Posted by Dharm_Guru on (April 30, 2013, 16:23 GMT)

Pune Warriors actually have a very good batting line-up that boasts of players like Finch, Uthappa, Yuvraj, Smith, Ross Taylor who are all match winners. They just need to come good with the bat consistently and Pune will be a real force that can upset the top of the table. All the Best Pune!

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (April 30, 2013, 16:21 GMT)

Indian pace bowlers are really mediocre and overrated. Even with Coachs like Allan Donald, Waqar Younis, None of them can bowl a proper yorker on demand. Ishant Sharma, A Dinda, B Kumar, D Kulkarni, U Yadhav, V Aaron.. the list goes on. Wonder how Allan Donald must be having nightmares pleading Dinda not bowl that filthy slow ball of his and length. Ishant sharma hasn't learn't anything from Waqar Younis and Steyn.

waaaoooooo dhoni amezing hitter in last over really iam ur fan now lot of love from pakistan

Posted by playitstraight on (April 30, 2013, 14:49 GMT)

Pune beating Chennai once more would be a feat in their miserable campaign, I think they can do it. Especially because Chennai are not chasing, which they're masters at!

Posted by Shaan99 on (April 30, 2013, 14:37 GMT)

I think Pune will surely win this match.. Because they have nothing to loose.. And for that they will really free any kind tense.. With strong power packed batting lineup of Warriors and weak bowling line up of chennai.. Its better for pune to chase

Posted by abhi_jeet88 on (April 30, 2013, 14:32 GMT)

If pune have to do some significant improvement then dont think this stale change would work...Pandey replaced by Suman, Suman replaced by Manhas, Manhas replaced by Suman...whats happening. Get the major changes Replace Dinda & Rahul Sharma...they are liabilities.
