Mid-table Kings XI look for consistency

Big Picture

Chennai Super Kings have been among the best travelers this IPL, winning all four of their away games, in addition to the four home wins. With eight wins and 16 points - four ahead of second-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore - Super Kings are all but certain of a place in the playoffs, having won six in a row. Their journey this year is in contrast to 2012, where they groped around in the darkness in the middle stages, before sneaking into the playoffs in a frenzy, helped along the way by a few other teams. In 2013, they have been remarkably consistent and that's partly due to the fact that they have stuck with a core of players - six of them have played all ten games, while Michael Hussey and Chris Morris are a close second with nine. Against bottom-placed Pune Warriors, they went back to their tried and tested formula of starting slowly with the bat and then attacking. Warriors were batted out of the match.

Super Kings can expect stiffer competition from the unpredictable Kings XI Punjab, who ran Mumbai Indians close on Monday in a tense chase. The result could have gone their way if it weren't for the umpiring in the final over, when an above-waist high full toss wasn't penalised by the umpires, denying them an extra ball and a run. Only four runs separated the teams in the end. It could also have been different had they sent Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar - both with proven track records as hitters - ahead of Manpreet Gony, who wasted three balls and didn't score. They made a significant change at the top, dropping the out-of-form Adam Gilchrist, and handing the captaincy to David Hussey, who could continue in that role till the end of the tournament. Kings XI have lost their last two games, and need some wins to try and get in to the top four. Beating Super Kings in Chennai will be a challenge, but it's not impossible, as Mumbai and Warriors have done earlier.

Players to watch

Mohit Sharma was among five uncapped (IPL) players picked by Super Kings this year, and like Gony in IPL 2008, has turned out to be one of the emerging players. The Haryana seamer has nine wickets in seven games and has been miserly too, with an economy rate of just six.

David Miller has been the pick of the overseas players for Kings XI with 200 runs in five games with two fifties, behind the top scorer Mandeep Singh (228). Miller's clean hitting stood out in the game against Mumbai, there were five sixes in his 56.

Stats and trivia

  • R Ashwin's bowling average against Kings XI (44) is his worst among teams in the IPL. His strike rate of 40.50 against KXIP is also his worst among teams in the IPL
  • Ravindra Jadeja is 29 runs short of conceding 1000 runs in the IPL. He will be only the fifth player to have scored and conceded more than 1000 runs in the tournament. The others are Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis, Irfan Pathan and Shane Watson
  • Albie Morkel is 32 runs short of conceding 2000 runs in the IPL. He will be only the fourth bowler and the first overseas player to have conceded 2000 or more in the tournament
  • Suresh Raina has been dismissed by Piyush Chawla three times in the IPL. The only other bowler to have dismissed Raina on more occasions is Dwayne Bravo, now Raina's team-mate.

I really fell that Gilly should play the remaining games he is like a mentor to kings X1 he inspires them.....my opinion for kings X1 team: Gilly, Marsh, Hussey, Miller, Awana, Praveen, manpreet gony, bipul sharma, mandeep singh, piyush chawla and gurkeerat singh....... just a suggestion....Gilly and praveen should open the batting...followed by marsh, miller then hussey.....then you still have the likes of mandeep, gurkeerat, chawla n the under rated bipul sharma who could hit the ball very well

  • ThIrU88 on May 2, 2013, 10:24 GMT

Gilly should play. He is such a great can regain at any time.

  • jhovee on May 2, 2013, 9:45 GMT

Common CSK, Fight hard to throw MI/KKR in playoff!! Not bad to lose to KXI as we have won one already!

  • manmishr on May 2, 2013, 9:41 GMT

Shaun Marsh provides much needed stability at the top of the order. I really wish he fires today and silents his critiques.

  • Adityabhatia on May 2, 2013, 9:36 GMT

KXIP should send Miller 1 down in case of early wicket & let Hussy bat at number 5. If their opening is good then let Hussy & miller come before Vohra.

  • on May 2, 2013, 9:35 GMT

Also CSK have a chance to equal RCB's record of 7 consecutive wins (2011) today. So an added impetus to win the match.

  • on May 2, 2013, 9:31 GMT

I felt very sorry for Kings XI after their match against Mumbai which they should have won. Kings XI were no match to Mumbai, but still gave a spirited fight to Mumbai Indians. But as much as I want them to win today, I don;t think they have a chance against CSK which is looking just too strong for the other teams. I don't see them losing today in chennai and think the run of consecutive victories will continue.

They could only be stopped at Mumbai or Banglore, that too if they start to experiment with the team at the later stages.

  • on May 2, 2013, 9:18 GMT

Gilly should play for KXI...his presence in the side itself means a lot .....

  • androyuvi on May 2, 2013, 9:16 GMT

Woah.. Now that CSK are on top, CSK fans are ready to gift 2 points to KXIP, and that too for Preety's smile. How funny! Buddies, I don't think MSD thinks that way. He has got an amazing-calculating brain and he will not stop untill a stop in the top 2 is confirmed. But nonetheless, CSK can expect a tough fight from KXIP. The only thing KXIP misses is the balance with the bat given by Azhar. Hope he gets backs to runs soon. About CSK, they have the danger man MSD, and a man who keeps saving them from Badrinath. They just don't miss anything. Expecting a tough contest.

I would Like to recommend a winning XI for Punjab ,After a long Consideration i Conclude these name , Mandeep,Marsh,Miller, hussey, pombersbach ,gurkeerat, chawla, gony, harmeet, perveen

  • Raffik on May 2, 2013, 8:53 GMT

They lost against Mumbai in their last game not because of the last over batting performance but sure its their last over bowling performance by the skipper David Hussy.

  • on May 2, 2013, 8:37 GMT

KXII must include pomersbach in their XI............. My suggestion :- MandeepSingh, Marsh , Pomersbach , Hussey , Miller , Gurkreeth singh ,Gony, chawla, Praveenkumar, Harmeetsingh, Awana.........

  • Krishhhhh on May 2, 2013, 8:17 GMT

Am a hardcore fan of CSK .. but i wish Kings Xi to win today.. This Win will crash the hopes (??) of KKR. Also am yet to digest their unfair loss to Mumbai .. What a fight they gave and if not that poor umpiring, Mumbai position would have been in soup. Come on Kings XI .. Win or Loss .. CSK fans will support this match happily irrespective of the result .. Considering the fact if KKR and DD are still hoping to make playoffs .. we CSK assume we have been qualified already.

  • on May 2, 2013, 7:59 GMT

KXIP though a good team , will find it difficult to get across CSK. The main factosr will be Dhoni the Captain & Batsman , CSK Fielding, ability to cope with heat, and depth in batting till 10.

  • ladycricfan on May 2, 2013, 7:54 GMT

CSK is not in the play offs yet . Until the no1 or no2 spot is guarantied they should try to win every match. Never relax. If pretty zinta's day today, good luck to her.

  • on May 2, 2013, 7:34 GMT

If KXIP wants to be stayed alive they should immediately drop piyush chawla, the biggest liability of the team

  • imransaheb on May 2, 2013, 7:19 GMT

Today Kings Xi should be winning this match. However Azhar Mahmood and Piyush Chawla need to be dropped, with Gilchrist hopefully not playing.

  • CSK-RAJ on May 2, 2013, 7:03 GMT

Even Though Iam a die-hard fan of CSK today i want to see kings XI to fight hard and go cross the line.because looking at the table we do agree that CSK has the upperhand to the play offs.To be fare if you wanna win a team like CSK you have to put in your 200/100%.So today the clash of the titans its KINGS(pun) vs MIGHTY KINGS(CSK).Sorry fellow fans let preety smile gud today...(every one likes when she smiles Right)

  • thinkgood on May 2, 2013, 6:40 GMT

Hope CSK shows that they are SUPER kings and not just kings. Go CSK !!!

  • Manikkaraj on May 2, 2013, 6:08 GMT

@GrindAR - Even unknowledged cricket person knows.. CSK is far away better that KXII...

  • Manikkaraj on May 2, 2013, 6:06 GMT

It is very very difficult to beat CSK.. Hope for the best KXII..

  • GrindAR on May 2, 2013, 5:10 GMT

KXIP is unpredictable always... they swing wildly in every match. Their bowling unit is decent (better than CSK). CSK will have more venom in ball when they use Ashwin in the middle for this game (probably for David Miller). Miller will be a run away train if pace bowling or slow spin is used. Spin above 95kph will help CSK. KXIP know Saha well, so his best would be open and exploit the power play, to give him fair chance for to have a hit or mis match. For KXIP this is a critical game than for CSK. If they manage a close match, loosing team will have the net RR intact. My senses telling a mockery on cards in this match, not sure if it is a David's or MSD's. Lets see...

  • on May 2, 2013, 4:32 GMT

I hope Faf du Plessis plays today...he was my fav player of last years IPL..he rocks!!! Im expecting a huge CSK victory at home. CSK: Du Plessis Hussey Raina Saha Dhoni Bravo Jadeja Ashwin Morris Sharma Jakati

  • baskvijay on May 2, 2013, 4:23 GMT

Openers still be a slight bit of botheration. Some one should stick with Huss to build it big. Middle order to CSK is the pillar. So I would rather give Faff a fair go this time (if he is fully fit) to opn the innings and rest morkel for 2 more games. Annirudha Srikanth can get a chance in the middle order. He has not done all that bad with the opportunities he has got. CSK more or less will be an unchanged composition.

  • poorpatriot on May 2, 2013, 4:21 GMT

Miller and March can surprise CSK. if so, it will be a good match for us to watch.

  • sweet2hrme on May 2, 2013, 3:42 GMT

Plz drop Azhar Mahmood. He is leaking too many runs and not making any kind contribution from bat. Waisting too many dot balls in a crunch situation. Instead of mahmood pick Pomersbech strength your batting more. My 4 overseas player 1 Pomersbeck 2 Marsh 3 Hussey 4 Miller. I want to see good agressive cricket from Punjab. They can surely give good fight to CSK as compared to other teams.

  • AllInFairNess on May 2, 2013, 3:15 GMT

@SC13159, I don't think Vijay will get selected until CSK is assured of Top 2 positions.

  • CricketAkshay on May 2, 2013, 2:31 GMT

Chennai and Punjab at Chennai. 4'0 clock game. So hot in Chennai so as Dhoni. CSK bat's first and scores in excess of 160, it would be a tough chase unless Shaun Marsh gets into the grrove. Mandeep is the other quality batsmen. Do you know why Kings XI are struggling? They don't have quality Indian batsmen. You see RCB, CSK, and Mumbai have quality Indian batsmen who are in sublime form and that is why they keep winning more games. Nevertheless, they do have quality Indian bowlers. Teams which are heavily reliant on Foreigners don't shine in IPL.

  • Manu_reddy on May 2, 2013, 2:29 GMT

Major difference bw csk and other ipl teams is csk/dhoni ll give many chances to players inspite of failures n they ll come good at some time but other teams ll drop der players if they fail in 2 r 3 matches..... players ll not get d confidence if they dont have support of their captain n this is where dhoni is so good so his team is always a shining horse in ipl....

  • Samychennai on May 2, 2013, 1:37 GMT

CSK is playing tough games in home condition which supposed should be opposite. CSK is winning all away games but lost couple in home condition. I don't think because of that kings 11 could beat CSK today while they are in winning mood. Best of Luck Kings 11. Try to beat CSK if you can.

  • on May 2, 2013, 1:30 GMT

With Marsh,Hussey and Miller,KXIP can safely claim to have the best middle order in the ipl.But not too much of a bowling talent I'm afraid.

  • ladycricfan on May 1, 2013, 20:09 GMT

Hope Vijay has come to his senses after being dropped. Lets see if Vijay will play or Dhoni will persist with Saha. It will be good if Vijay regains his form before champions trophy. Even though Gilly is a better tactician than David Hussey, Marsh's addition has strengthened KXIP's batting. Looking forward to an exciting match tomorrow and a CSK win.

@Kumar, CSK have already been beaten this season. KXIP have a better win percentage at Chenai then CSK do and that percentage will increase tomorrow if KXIP have a proper leader and keeper in Gilly.
