De Villiers' blitz breaks RCB's away jinx

58

Royal Challengers Bangalore 187 for 3 (Tiwary 52, de Villiers 50*) beat Pune Warriors 170 for 9 (Uthappa 75, Vinay 3-31) by 17 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Royal Challengers Bangalore finally got their first away win of the season, beating bottom-placed Pune Warriors by 17 runs. The margin of victory suggested a comprehensive win, but Royal Challengers were run close by Robin Uthappa, who showed his potential with a blazing fifty which gave Warriors hope of chasing a tall 188. AB de Villiers was at his innovative best with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 50 off 23 balls to launch Royal Challengers past 180. His blows were the difference in the end.

De Villiers' assault helped Royal Challengers ransack 68 off the last five overs. Warriors needed 66 off the last five overs, but with a set Uthappa at the crease, Royal Challengers couldn't afford to relax. Angelo Mathews too gave the visitors a scare with his cameo, but his untimely departure only piled further pressure on Uthappa. Uthappa's form was good news for Warriors, but had he received better support, the result could have been different.

The pitch at Pune has been one of the slower ones in the IPL and one that was going to test the batsmen more than the one in Bangalore when the teams last met. Chris Gayle found out the hard way early in his innings when he found the spinners hard to get away. It was a clever ploy by Warriors to take the pace off the ball, giving Ajantha Mendis the new ball and bringing in the part-timer T Suman. A repressed Gayle plodded to 15 off 19 balls before lofting Suman over the sightscreen for a six. It was hardly a sign of things to come as he tried to repeat that shot the following the ball and miscued it to deep extra cover, falling for a sluggish run-a-ball 21.

Since there was no blazing launchpad by Gayle for a change, it was unusual watching Royal Challengers scrap to 59 after nine overs. Saurabh Tiwary and Virat Kohli gave the innings some impetus with a rousing stand of 63. Tiwary, who has batted in the middle order, had requested to go up the order and he justified his promotion with a half-century.

The most decisive phase in the match came in the final over. De Villiers was on 24 off 17 balls when Ashok Dinda - not the most reliable death bowler - ran in. De Villiers moved across his stumps and smoked a full delivery outside off stump to deep midwicket for a flat six. The second was smashed over the bowler's head for four, the third over long-off for six, the fourth reverse-swept to third man and the fifth scooped over short fine leg. De Villiers had raced to 50 off 23 by the end of the over, rousing Royal Challengers and demoralising the Warriors before the chase began.

Warriors needed a pacy start but they too found the going difficult early on, moving to 49 for 2 after eight overs. Yuvraj Singh gave the innings a push with two exquisite sixes and his confidence began to rub off on Uthappa, who was starting to peak when he launched Muttiah Muralitharan over the sightscreen

Royal Challengers bounced back with two wickets in an over from Vinay, but Uthappa's was the wicket they needed. The equation narrowed after one over when Uthappa and Mathews targeted the most experienced of the lot, Muralitharan, smashing three clean sixes in one over. Forty-five off 24 was achievable, but Vinay provided some relief to the visitors when he had Mathews caught at backward point. Uthappa's heroics ended the following over when he top edged Murali Kartik to point. The chase was all but over when he walked back.

AB de Villiers you beauty!! be it test,ODI or T20 cricket this young man bats with flair superior to rest. I can watch ABD bat all day, the guy is wonderfull to watch.

Pune may be at the bottom of table, but they are really an excellent team. Their failure is because of bad captaincy & management. 2013's Pune team is better than 2012's team. Dada should have been the mentor or coach to help with strategies. I liked their fight yesterday.. real warriors..!

I think PWI should drop Yuvraj as he had not made any significant results. how could they make Ros as Captain as he would be going for End tour. its is realy sad to see how people look at one person when there are 10 more in the team. i dont think even Finch is a good captain write now if you look with the rest. but could be, time to come. you cannot monitor a leadership within few matches as most of the IPL team this season face the same expect for very few. thats cricket there are ups & downs which you need to expect & not over react.

@ maddy20, this is club cricket, any player from india/ world can make up the team. The chennai franchise think tank appoint the staff and choose the players. Give credit to them. They retained players. Bought back the other players in the auction. Some players are from tamil nadu itself. The core players are playing for all six years. The players know each other very well. Their team spirit is amazing. They are the most consistent team in the IPL history. They entertained us enormously. What more can a fan ask for?

ABD gets a sense of stability to the batting line up that quite a few times shows vulnerability. RCB should get ABD opening the batting from Eliminators. Will be a good counterpart to Gayle rotating the strike and reducing the pressure on Gayle to always explode

Drop this dinda guy and bring some uncapped indian bowlers. They will do a better job than this overrated dinda. Look at Mohit sharma, he is doing an excellent job for CSK. So it wont be a bad idea to try another bowler in place of dinda.

  • on May 3, 2013, 4:55 GMT

ha ha ha .. what was that . is it batting or kung fu fight . AB' s abitlity is his speed, quick estimation of the delivery, shot judgement, perfect execution,.. these are the perfect combination of yesterdays i can call it as wonder.. he simply adjusting on crease and coming under the line of the ball , and middling it nicely with perfect timing . i think no cricket book had written this kind of a batsmenship, he invents shots , many batsmen always busy between the wickets , but this man very very busy in the wicket box also he always moving two steps forward, backward, to left, to right, and producing nightmares to the bowlers, dindas xpressions suggests you that,in yesterdays 20th over. he bowled he looked like an artist, voilin player, or something else. but very good batting effort by pune also .. fortunately or unfortunately nothin going their way, GREAT GOING AB ....

Msg to PWI management from fan: Please bring Taylor back into team and make him captain, though he didn't perform up to his potential, but team won under him, after all that is what matters at the end of the day, and remove useless Angelo Mathews and create place for Taylor, once he finds form, I think pune will have best 4 foreign players in their team, anyway better luck next season.

@ Erantha Perera I am a Pune Warriors supporter too and its very sad to see them losing everytime,i am following your comments too...yes buddy they should play Mendis in every match...Samuels is injured has flown back to Jamaica...also the lack of local Maharastra players in Pune team is hampering their prospects.....

  • maddy20 on May 3, 2013, 3:06 GMT

@Mahesh Prabakaran How many runs did Vijay and Badrinath score? How many wickets did Ashwin take this season? Murali Karthik was average at best and is not consistent. Dinesh Karthik is probably the only player of note. As of CSK won matches dude to start by Hussey, bowlig by Bravod, Jadeja, Mohit, Morris and finishes by Dhoni, Jadeja!

  • class9ryan on May 3, 2013, 1:52 GMT

@ Erantha Perera : Marlon Samuels in injured and not in India. B Kumar can bat. Stop giving misleading comments. Anyways, gr8 innings from AB and tiwary in some form is also gonna help. Good luck to them as they won without Chris. Waiting when Pujara will walk into this side.

@maddy20 : Nonsense. No team has its own quota of regional players. Then, Chennai too would feel sad that they lost DInesh Karthik, Murali karthik, Arun Karthik, A Mukund, Oh my god thats already 3 players from RCB, LOL, R satish, L Balaji, Y Mahesh. Can you list the Players who are "supposed" to play for RCB?, I doubt it adds to half the number of TN Players. ( CM Gowtham is another one, but ok i will not get into it ). How many Ranji trophy players from K'taka get to play in the IPL , my dear friend.

  • r0adrunn3r on May 2, 2013, 22:31 GMT

@ Provost Aside from Murli Karthik and Dinesh karthik all the ones you named are below average players also Muralidharan is not a chennai local (never thought I'd be clarifying this.). What those players are making is not called a "great contribution". Also why are we arguing about who plays whom? This is IPL that's how it goes.

  • on May 2, 2013, 22:04 GMT

@provost you said "check your facts" and you say rcb is a 1 man army! you know, its people as stupid as you call them 1 man army. remember 2nd game against sunrisers? gayle didn't score yet they won. and again today, they won without gayle firing! and you are saying csk plays as a team always? remove dhoni and you will see how many of matches csk wud have lost! take raina away from today's game and they wud have lost! so the point is, in ipl, its not necessary for the whole team 2 perform, one person can change d game! csk is a good unit, but obviously 1 person has 2 stand out in a match, at times it has been hussey, at times dhoni and today it was raina! simple!

  • Giri.Murthy on May 2, 2013, 21:54 GMT

B Kumar is the most consistent bowler this IPL(look at his stats in all matches except one where he gave 41 runs the rest of matches he has gone way to less). Even in the match against RCB where they scored more then 250, B Kumar bowled 4 overs for 24. And in the all the matches Dinda has been taken to the cleaners. Yet Finch screws up and bowls only 3 overs from B Kumar and 4 overs from Dinda, in which Dinda gives 26 runs in the last over. I am not blaming the bowler but actually the captain who does not understand the potential of a great upcoming bowler for India. Either way I am happy that India got a good fast bowler they can rely on for a long time unless the selectors screws up and drops him which is very much possible in India.

  • GrindAR on May 2, 2013, 21:12 GMT

PWI can now target the key games where opposition has to win for their advancement. They can juggle the order well if they perform well going forward. (try to win 2 of the 3 remaining games)

  • on May 2, 2013, 20:34 GMT

Try to make some bold changes. Finch has been batting well but Pune should try something out. Let the Foreign players be Smith, Angelo, Malon Samuals and Ajantha Mendis. They can try Taylor as well for one of above.I think Taylor captained the team best though Angelo also did a very good job. Suman, can he clear the boundaries? Indian friends should know better. i thin it is time Donad let the captain decide on how the game is controlled.

  • on May 2, 2013, 20:25 GMT

Bottom line... Dinda should not bowl any of the of the following overs 1-6 and 16-20. Kumar should bowl 2 of the 1-6 overs and 2 of the 16-20 overs may be 18th and 20th. Also Dinda or Kumar cannot bat at all. This is also an issue. No other good Indian bowling allrounders in the Pune squad ?

  • ThyrSaadam on May 2, 2013, 20:24 GMT

All the CSK fans missed out another of their export N SRINIVASAN who makes sure they get enough advantage at all stages. Funny how murali"d"haran is suddenly a CSK player?

  • on May 2, 2013, 20:21 GMT

deVilliers did a fine job with magnificent hits over the fence all around the pitch.one reverse sweep to the fence for a 4 was a treat to watch. He has secured a fine total after Kohli & S.Tiwari got out. In spite of all these happenings Robin Uthappa & Mathews turned themselves into a nightmare for RCBwith their fluent hits over the fence& were likely to take P.Warriors home but for the abrupt fall of Mathews at the most crucial juncture.Had Mathews continued another 2 more overs ,a different story could have been witnessed at Sahara Stadium ,Pune.they had every chance to win .The turning point for Pune was not merely the the performance from ABD but the untimely fall of Mathews too. Any how it was destined for RCB to celebrate away from home despite fall og Gayle& Captain Kohli.

So it is not all that certain now RCB would find a place in last 4.

In IPL anything is possible for any team on it's day.So let us waiit for another week to decide the semifinalists.CSK is almost there now

  • on May 2, 2013, 20:05 GMT

@maddy29...and Gayle who won all those matches was born and brought up in Bangalore ? If not for gayle RCB would have just won 2 or 3 matches. Atleast for CSK Indian players are the ones doing well.

And you havent lost a great deal by losing Dravid and certainly not Stuart Binny :P and even u know it. So if u want to criticize CSK, think sensibly first.

  • on May 2, 2013, 20:02 GMT

Finch's captaincy at his best today. Did Dinda look like Kumar to Finch ? Earlier he could not remember the name of the 11th player of the team and now he throws the ball for the 20th over to Dinda and not Kumar. Kumar bowled only 3 overs by the way. Time to relieve captaincy from Finch and Coaching Job from Donald and let may be Taylor be the coach with Donalds pay as well. Also let Angelo bat at 4 and Yuvi at 3. The first 6 overs were wasted and it took 8 overs to reach 49 for 2. If they scored at 8 for the first 6 overs, then there was a chance. Dinda has leaked too many runs for Pune. No alternative for him ?

  • on May 2, 2013, 19:46 GMT

@maddy20 Have you heard of Ashwin?Murali Vijay?Badrinath? Why can't sachin/ponting play as well as michael hussey? cause MI never had a genuiine idea of approaching T20. Murali Karthick and Dinesh Karthick is an export from tamil nadu and so is Balaji. Think twice before commenting on CSK boss. Which team do u think would have Dhoni played for? any home-franchise there for him? U say team members are import from other states and countries. K well, RCB has only same state players! HOW NICE!

  • StevieS on May 2, 2013, 19:46 GMT

Drop Mathews and bring in Taylor, someone who can bring them home, nearly there isn't good enough.

  • on May 2, 2013, 19:37 GMT

Its silly to blame Dinda for the onslaught at the end... ABD did the same to Steyn last year. In fact he would have scored against any bowler when he is in flow. Dinda has a good yorker, the problem with him is that he doesnt bowl it enough and tries too many things. but having said that, its inexplicable why Bhuvnesh Kumar didn't bowl the last over, especially when Dinda went for plenty in the last over of last match too..

  • Provost on May 2, 2013, 19:30 GMT

@maddy20 - check your facts. RCB is called the one man army......This year Murli Vijay did not click otherwise, CSK plays more local players than anyone else... Even in RCB our contribution is great, Arvind(keeper), Mohammed (spinner), Murali Karthik,Abinav Mukund and ofcourse Muralidharan.......MI without Dinesh will suffer, Balaji with KKR is no big deal...

  • janardhan1990 on May 2, 2013, 19:14 GMT

good performance by the team RCB next up for them is KXIP this permormance now needs to improve in the next match where RCB will be treated with a pitch with Bounce and a green top. When management knew SAurab is opening there was no need to play Kl Rahul Instead a bowler would have been helpfull. I guess its time to bid adieu to Muthiah Muralidharan with all due respect to him he isnt the same old whizard that he used to be. Daniel christian i guess can be used for a match or two and also gayle's bowling needs to be utilised. Its time that team management fix there playing eleven before they get into the playoffs. MY RCB team for the next two matches 1. Gayle(opening bowler as well) 2. tiwary 3. kohli 4. Ab 5. henreques 6. Daniel Christian 7.Arun Karthik 8. vinay kumar 9. murali karthik 10.rp singh 11. jaidev unadkat

  • GrindAR on May 2, 2013, 19:12 GMT

@maddy20... why grapple... RCB dont have many good local players in the team for the same reasons why CSK dont have many good local players as they lost their best batsmen and quick bowlers to other teams... I think it is IPL not B(angalore)PL

  • Philip_Gnana on May 2, 2013, 19:06 GMT

Dinda has not been the best as "death bowler". It tells you that the team does not have much options. For all the fuss made about the captaincy etc, nothing seems to be working having tried all options. Having wickets in hand is being forgotten by the Pune Warriors and thereby exerting undue pressure on the batsmen who can hit out of the park. It was seen how Uthappa and Mathews tried their best, but with not much wickets in hand. Surrey,England

  • Narabavi on May 2, 2013, 18:59 GMT

Robin Uthappa's wicket keeping was very poor today.

  • JamesSmithee on May 2, 2013, 18:56 GMT

Nothing wrong with Dinda IMO. This can be happened when you bowl either to ABD or MSD and you have a captain who just watching bowlers get hit. Otherwise Dinda can get away. Most of the shots are innovative. I think that is simply bad captaincy. Dinda can bowl fast yorkers so captain needs to set the fielders to protect sweep shot. That's the only shot batmen can score boundaries. Cutting a boundary is just fine when ABD batting in last over. Dinda can bowl +140 so doesn't needs to follow batsmen. Bring the long on and protect on deep midwicket, fineleg, square leg and bowl yokers directing the 3 stumps. Simple as that.

  • Dr.Lakson on May 2, 2013, 18:53 GMT

What was Finch doing in giving the last over to the Dinda when B. Kumar was available. I wonder if he was unable to see the differences between the two bowlers at the end when PWI was under tremendous pressure. Having less captaincy experience can be excused but making mistakes like this can only be good for a coach like AD.

  • Dr.Lakson on May 2, 2013, 18:47 GMT

PWI coach/captain should resign at least now..... and let the players enjoy the remaining games and may be win some.......... very very poor captaincy once again under pressure........

  • maddy20 on May 2, 2013, 18:47 GMT

@Provost RCB was not slow in the first 10. they made 76 which is pretty good considering the sluggish pitch. Besides there is nothing original about Chennai, their best players are all imports from other states or overseas, including their captain. Atleast our best player(kumar 18 wickets) is our own, not to mention the good players and captains we have lost to other teams in the auction(Dravid, Binny, Uthappa etc.,)

  • GrindAR on May 2, 2013, 18:44 GMT

finally PWI gave a tough fight. why dont they do their homework in dressing room? It was their game to win. Dinda bowling was was sucidal... always proven vulnerable at death.... why dont Mr. Finch use his stuff in his head to work? When captain sleeps at critical times, ships sink... PWI's captain stays as IPL example for that... consistently...

  • TNAmarkFromIndia on May 2, 2013, 18:39 GMT

The only reason Uthappa performed today is because he knows he will be released by PWI next year and he wanted to impress the RCB owners while he had the chance. Anyway, congratulations to the most consistent team in IPL history (that's the Pune Warriors, for those that didn't get it).

  • cricket_jaya on May 2, 2013, 18:34 GMT

    finch over mathiews...... r u serious ?

  • ThyrSaadam on May 2, 2013, 18:25 GMT

PWI need to rethink their strategy. It may be harsh assessment, but Yuvraj probably disappointed them by not wanting to lead the side. Last year was quite acceptable because of the illness, but he had to be counted this year. There is absolutely no point blaming Finch, he is a great opener but not a good captain, and cannot be blamed. He was asked to take the role, because he was the best available international player on the team. To add to their woes they haven't used their existing resources well, Abhishek Nayar should definitely bat higher up. They need to establish a core group of players. When Sourav was out of the team, they should have send Dinda along with him.

  • Provost on May 2, 2013, 18:24 GMT

Good. RCB took a leaf from CSK's playbook and successfully copied it book (slow for the first 10 overs but keep the wickets). To do it again again???? that needs some skill.........let us wait and see. Generally copies not as good as the originals

  • yogi3999 on May 2, 2013, 18:23 GMT

Wow!! Finch has set new standards for captaincy, letting your main most economical strike bowler not to bowl full quota, and handing the ball to proven master of death bowling Dinda, allowing him to complete his awesome 4 overs with astonishing figures!! All hain Finch!!

  • Angry_Bowler on May 2, 2013, 18:03 GMT

  • AneYako on May 2, 2013, 17:49 GMT

Poor captaincy from Finch (AGAIN), horribly slow and senseless batting at the front, and Dinda cost Pune the match. Why not bowl out Mathews? 8 of the runs he gave were thanks to some mediocre keeping! But nope let's go with Dinda. I think this has been the story of this team this IPL. Hats off to the Uthappa and Angelo partnership tho, was very entertaining and gave their team a fighting chance

  • mjshaheed on May 2, 2013, 17:36 GMT

It's time PWI gave chance to the players on the bench. It's evident that they can't do anything in this edition of the IPL and only a fill-up team; why not rotate players and and it would help them get a feel of playing in the IPL.

Watching AB bat like that is worth the price of admission alone. That sweep for 6, reverse sweep off a fast bowler... just so different to most other big hitters.

I am not suren why PWI can not make B Kumar bowl his full quota... !!!

  • mjshaheed on May 2, 2013, 17:36 GMT

It's time PWI gave chance to the players on the bench. It's evident that they can't do anything in this edition of the IPL and only a fill-up team; why not rotate players and and it would help them get a feel of playing in the IPL.

Drop Smith Bring some pther player He was hitting air than the ball right from the word GO. He is a ONE MATCH WONDER (against CSK) Kashinath

According to Dada, Dinda is India's best bowler, and guess what! ABD showed what kind of bowler he is! PWI bye-bye for this season of IPL.

Wow!! Finch has set new standards for captaincy, letting your main most economical strike bowler not to bowl full quota, and handing the ball to proven master of death bowling Dinda, allowing him to complete his awesome 4 overs with astonishing figures!! All hain Finch!!

lost 6 on the trott....go back to the team you started the competion with...at least they won 2 of the first games ...total mis management of a good team.
