Five matches since he last made an appearance in the IPL, Angelo Mathews has resigned as the Pune Warriors captain for the season.

"I would like to confirm that I have decided to stand-aside as Pune Warriors franchise captain for the rest of the current season to ensure team leadership continuity," Mathews said in a statement issued to the media prior to the start of Warriors' home game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. "It is in our best interests that the captaincy is not switched frequently as we strive to achieve the best balanced team for each different opponent."

Mathews was appointed the captain for the season after Michael Clarke, the Warriors' first-choice leader, couldn't join the squad due to recurrence of his back injury. Mathews had to be dropped for the Warriors' game against Chennai Super Kings on April 15 since the IPL's restrictions on not allowing Sri Lankan players to participate in the games played in Chennai.

Since then, Mathews has been unable to regain his place in the side. While Ross Taylor led the side in Chennai, he was dropped because, like Mathews, he was also going through a bad patch, despite the team's victory in Chennai. Aaron Finch has led Warriors in the four successive losses since then.

Mathews hinted that despite the team's slide to the bottom of the points table, Finch is expected to lead the side for the remaining six games.

"Given that Aaron (Finch) is likely to play in all our remaining games then it is logical that he continues to be our captain," Mathews said. "I will naturally provide my fullest support at all times to Aaron and my team-mates. I will also continue to work as hard as possible as a player as we all strive to win our remaining matches."

Problem of Pune team is different. This team needs Ganguly. The owner have to show some flexibility.Remember last season they starts very well but due to some horrible performane of Mr. Nehra and injuri of Dinda in crucial time including absence of some good indian players like YUVI , the team lost some very close matches. But the top management were unable to understan those factors. They straight way blamed their captain Ganguly. The management loves to punish captains. I think Mathews is forced to step down as captain, same things happen to Ros Tailor as well. Pune needs magik, not performance.Their management do not understant cricket. Bad luck for DADA. Mathews has to be developed as a specialist batsman, he has all the right ingredients for that, that should have been his role from the beginning. Using him as an allrounder will only spoil his batting talents as well. He's primarily a batsman who can be used as a utility bowler if the situation demands, he's by no means having enough bowling skills to be considered as a true allrounder. Just check his first class record, a very respectable batting record, still a very humble bowling record with a bowling average which any top order batsman would love to have as his batting average. This guy should be asked to develop as a batsman, just leave his humble bowling aside, the issue will be resolved. First, he has to understand himself and work on developing his batting skills further, I'm sure he will succeed in that department, he's a bowler who can bowl a bit, by no means an allrounder, period.

KingOwl:

I agree with you. Angelo is not REALLY out of form. He is actually at his PEAK form at the moment, proof is his 2 overs for 23 runs. Can't really recall when he did something of note in any IPL match or for his national team. All I remember is the LOVELY GRACEFUL shot he played to help his team win --- oh sorry--- LOSE the WT20 Final vs WI which incidentally they were playing AT HOME and chasing (Just like India were playing WC 2011 at home and chasing).

I also agree that based on the way MSD and Angelo performed in these two Finals one can CLEARLY see that Angelo is parsecs ahead of MSD ------- in choking.

Pune players are not performing. Cant blame Mathews at all. Has Finch made a real difference? Clarke's absence is no doubt costly for PWI. Hopefully better luck for Pune next season.

Pune issue is not Mathews. He has played fairly well. None of Pune players done well. No matter who the captain is, Pune's team combination is no the greatest. Remember team Mahela, Shewag, and Warner in, they are still in the bottom. End of the day some teams has to be bottom no matter how great they are. It is other teams are too good. Pune is better but other teams are at their best.

Not Mathews or Finch,Underperforming big local players (Yuvi,Robin except last knock did nothing to the team & Dinda ) are the main reason for Pune's downfall.

I think all these Pune problems will end, if Yuvraj is made captain (if you know what I mean) :D

I think the captaincy should have gone to Ross Taylor, if none of the Indian players in PWI are ready to captain the side. Agreed Taylor is a foreign player & there's pressure on them to keep performing to stay in the team, more so when the team is losing like PWI. But, the guy is matured & has leadership qualities. I'm sure he's too good a player not to have come back to form given 2 or 3 chances. He won the only match he captained. But, was dropped the very next match due to poor performance. Finch has now shown a few times that a very small mistake can cost the match. Bowling Dinda the last over was one such option. Also, PWI has found out that frequently chopping & changing the side & captains does no good. They should just identify a set of core players, believe in them & keep playing them. Too bad if they aren't able to deliver. But, more often than not, they would. All the best to Pune. Hope they'll be as competitive as they were today & may be win some matches.
