Big Picture

Royal Challengers Bangalore finally scored away points, their first in five games on the road in IPL 2013, against Pune Warriors on Thursday. While the winning margin of 17 runs seemed comfortable enough in the end, Royal Challengers must have been worried as Robin Uthappa had a feisty go at the target of 188. To remove all remaining doubts, for themselves, the fans and the experts, they would have to score again in Mohali.

Apart from the psychological benefits of consecutive away victories, it's imperative that they win to allow themselves a bit of a cushion on the points table. Royal Challengers currently sit at No. 2 with 14 points from 11 games. But Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals all have the same numbers too. With five games to go in the group stages, Royal Challengers will want to break away from the pack without much delay.

Kings XI Punjab sit just outside of that mid-table cluster, with eight points from 10 games. With nine wins being the number widely agreed upon as the number required to stand a serious chance of making the playoffs, they must win five of their remaining six matches. While Royal Challengers - with the likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli all having delivered at different times in this tournament - might seem like a daunting challenge for the relatively low-profile Kings XI, they can take heart from their previous two showings. After almost pulling off a giant-killing in Mumbai, they were spirited in their chase of 187 at Chepauk. Now, back at home in Mohali, they will be hoping to finally close out a game. Time is running out for them, and they can't afford any more almost-theres.

Form guide

Royal Challengers Bangalore: WLLWW (most recent first)
Kings XI Punjab: LLLWW

Players to watch

Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Saurabh Tiwary for US$1.6 million at the 2011 auction, following his fine IPL 2010 with Mumbai Indians. Till last Thursday, he was yet to score a half-century for Royal Challengers. A few days ago, coach Ray Jennings said it is imperative Tiwary - who had missed the first couple of weeks of the tournament due to injury but has played all five of Royal Challengers' games since - betters his performance. He responded with 52 against Pune Warriors, but scored at a rate of 115 even as his team got to 187. Royal Challengers will be hoping he can go that mile further against Kings XI.

Praveen Kumar might have had an off-day in his previous game, going at 9.50 against Chennai Super Kings, but he has been having a very tidy IPL on the whole. Even after that showing at Chepauk, his economy rate in 10 games is 6.75, the third-best among pace bowlers (35 overs min) in the tournament behind Dale Steyn and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. But he has missed out on selection for the Champions Trophy in England in June. He last played for India a little over a year ago, before being sidelined by injury. On recovering, he had expressed "frustration" at being ignored by the national selectors. Then, he had discipline issues in domestic cricket. Now, he might be feeling a bit hard done again. He'll be keen to prove a point.

Stats and Trivia

  • Both teams have very even records against each other: they've played 10 in all, winning 5 each; they've played 4 in Punjab, winning 2 each; they won one apiece last year, both sides winning their away games
  • Kings XI's David Miller leads the tournament's batting-average charts at the moment, with 251 runs in six games at 83.66
  • Beware Chris Gayle the bowler. He has claimed three wickets in the two overs he has sent down in the tournament so far

Whenever ABD plays a match he is the player to watch for. Chris gayle is undoubtedly the most destructive batsman at this point in time however I still feel sometime that a captain can plan certain things against him and ask his bowlers to execute and if executed well he can be chained to a certain extent. ABD is someone who is unstoppable, a captain's and bowlers nightmare. I wonder if any bowler in this world can think of where to bowl at him. The range of improvisations he has is incredibly awesome. He is too classy to be true and yet denies to stay classy and mixes aggression and improvisation with class. and between Gayle and AB at no 3 comes Kohli who is thriving to become one of the best. Its treat to watch this Batting order. I wish Pujara could have been available and could have opened the battign and it would have been icing on the cake for RCB.

With a bit of luck KXIP would've won the last two games against MI and CSK. I expect RCB to win today. But KXIP has the players to beat RCB. KXIP is still in the tournament and a win today will make the points table interesting. Gilly might come in for pomersbach.. Weekend has seen two boring one sided matches. Looking forward to see a close game. Good luck both teams.

Counting Kings IX out is foolish. They are a pretty decent team and can sure spoil any team's day. Saying they don't have a chance against RCB is childish. RCB is being overestimated here while Kings are undermined. Hope it's a close match and RCB come out on top. GO RCB!

Can RCB and KXIP include Vijay Zool and Sandeep Sharma in their playing XI. Why under 19 players(except Unmuth Chand)are ignored. Many are included them in their team like Baba Aparajith in CSK, Harmeet Singh in RR. Only Harmeet got one chance. Like Sanju Samson(not U-19 WC player but one of good emerging player) they may become good player. After U-19 wc victory Virat, Jadeja and others are tested. And they emerged as good player. So please include them in playing XI, so that they may emerge as good player and also helps them to interact with other international heroes.

May be RCB has a better chance of winning this, but but don't count your chicken until they hatch. However less, still KXIIP stands chance to win the match. My best wishes to both teams, and may the best team win.

kings punjab need to strengthen their batting against rcb.. they dont have much options in bowling and their pacers are doing a fair job.. i feel marsh, pomersbach, miller, hussey should be their 4 overseas players as all are good batsmen.. pk, gony, awana, chawla, harmeet can be the bowlers, gurkeerat keeper and mandeep at opening. rcb need not worry much about this match as they are already a fine tuned unit. they can think of resting one of their regular as they can afford so for this match. tough for kp to beat rcb.

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 11:49 GMT

KXIP is having very good team. they can win games provided each player should put 100% effort.Bowling department has to improve . chawla, pk, azhar are very talented bowlers they need to put up good show. azhar can open the batting, send him with singh and marsh in 1st down....

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 11:29 GMT

Pujara should play instead of L.Rahul and R.Rampaul instead of Murali, not just because he didn't bowl to well in the last game against Pune Warriors India conceding 32 of 3 ,but also because the Mohali track has traditionally and historicaly assisted seam bowlers.Perhaps Virat should open with Chris as that will give him a little more time to settle down and then go for his shots..Good luck RCB!

  • POSTED BY vishank2009 on | May 6, 2013, 11:03 GMT

Even a miracle cannot save KXI from RCB , RCB can be assured of two more points even before the toss is done. if RCB bats first they will put up a huge total 200 plus for sure or if KXI bats first you can be sure what ever the target set will be chased before 18th over. u can expect Gayle storm tonight!!!!

  • POSTED BY Achyu4101 on | May 6, 2013, 10:44 GMT

Can we expect Pujara in Playing XI today?. News reports says he is fit to play :)

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 10:37 GMT

main problem for kxip is there spin department.there faster r doing good as pk,azhar and awana.

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 10:33 GMT

only a miracle can save KXIP bowling looks thin with no wicket taking bowler in the squad...a stupendous batting effort is the only way out for kings !!!

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 10:18 GMT

get Sandeep Sharma in. He has great potentiol to swing bowl both ways.

  • POSTED BY satishchandar on | May 6, 2013, 10:07 GMT

I think Luke would be out by default. With Miller in terrific form and Mandeep in decent form.. Marsh back with a bang will give them an option of going with Azhar as a bowling option and promote Vohra or Gurukeerat as opener.. Azhar while under performed as batter, has been ok with the ball.. It would be a more worthy try than Gilly coming back..

  • POSTED BY guptahitesh4u on | May 6, 2013, 10:06 GMT

KXIP is all about the overseas players...they don't have any Indian player with a match-winning potential...

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 9:39 GMT

kings XI should be win today and beat RCB in mohali, mandeep and miller should open the bat.

  • POSTED BY vishank2009 on | May 6, 2013, 9:14 GMT

It is going to be very easy win for RCB , they will definitely crush KXI without any doubt . but should do it with a huge marigin . KXI has some good batting but not good bowling to stop gayle , kohli or AB. it is going to cakewalk for RCB.

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 9:05 GMT

if punjab wants to win.....its like they will hv to hope for getting many things right.....gilly , hussey , marsh and miller will hv to be play far better than before....and main will be stopping gayle and abd....cz if gayle gets going none efforts frm kxip will be useful....and hoping for this much things to happen is like hoping for ireland to win world cup.....so it aint gonna be a close one at all.....rcb all d way..

    Gayle.Pujara,Kohli,ABdV, Henriques, S.Tiwary, A.Karthik, V.Kumar, R.Rampaul, M.Kartik, RP Singh

Rcb if bat second chasing 160 or less will be easy as our bowlers when bowled first have bowled well ther than Mumbai

  • POSTED BY RAMSPAK666 on | May 6, 2013, 8:30 GMT

Gayle, Pujara, Kohli, AB .Moses Henriques ,S.Tiwary Arun Karthik ,V.Kumar, R.Rampaul, M.Kartik, RP.Singh

  • POSTED BY satishchandar on | May 6, 2013, 7:39 GMT

If Gayle is hit, RCB doesnt have any problem in closing out the game before the second innings starts.. If not, the other opener and Virat need to pull their socks and play till 10th over.. ABD will take care of the proceedings from there and give them 20 more than par score if he clicks.. It is simply a 4 men lineup where 3 are very reliable and consistent match winners and the other just need to stay with them without getting out..

  • POSTED BY on | May 6, 2013, 6:18 GMT

today gilly ill play like a gayle if he in the team .rcb will suffer due to gilly marsh hussy storm

  • POSTED BY urimiti04 on | May 6, 2013, 5:16 GMT

My playing XI would be Gilchrist, Mandeep, Shaun Marsh, D Hussey, D Miller, Gurkeerat, Bipul Sharma, Chawla, P Kumar, Harmeet Singh, Awana. Might not be a bad idea to open the bowling with Praveen and David Hussey(completing 4 overs in 1 spell). I would like punjab to win. Gilchrist is a very good captain+Wicketkeeper+opening batsman. He is a compulsory person in the playing XI.

  • POSTED BY ibbani on | May 6, 2013, 4:08 GMT

RCB will win this very easily. They have the depth in batting/bowling/fielding. I hate when people say RCB does not have bowling depth. All teams have home advantage and taken them in both hands. See MI, CSK,RR, all have won their most of their home games and why RCB should not take that? yes they might have lost 4 away games, 2 in a big margin and otehr 2 very very close against CSK and SRH.

  • POSTED BY Tal_Botvinnik on | May 6, 2013, 3:44 GMT

Predicting an easy RCB win here. There is no experience in the KXIP Bowling attack. The track is more flat and seam friendly bit like chinnasamy. RCB has more potent attack with rampaul and co. If they rid of gayle they will need to worry about kohli and ab.

  • POSTED BY Javed_17 on | May 6, 2013, 3:01 GMT

I expect another gayle force storm tomorrow. KIXP doesnt have a particlarly strong bowling line up and the likes of chawla bowl towards gayle hitting side. However if gayle fails, AB and Virat can more than destroy the opposition bowling. As long as RCB bat second i doubt KIXP can post a competitive total

  • POSTED BY sweet2hrme on | May 6, 2013, 2:20 GMT

Todays match prediction Punjab shld Win. CrisGyle will going to be flop once again becoz whenever ball moves or pitch hv extra bounce he struggled. If Gyle gets out early than RCB batting looks in worried mode. Yeah they still have Kholi and Devilier so it will be interesting. Punjab played better cricket in last two games. Lost two close matches. So they gelling in well. Seeing the home condition i will say Punjab can upset RCB today.

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | May 5, 2013, 23:46 GMT

Both Gilchrist & A. Mahmood are not in the same form as last year. So the Kings XI must go with Miller, Marsh & D.Hussey as the 3 foreign players & hope wither Gilchrist or Azhar - who ever is the 4th guy- shows up. I prefer seeing Sandeep Sharma instead of rather pacy but expensive Gony. Sandeep will at least be economical + move the ball in the air P.Kumar, Sandeep, Harmeet, Chawla, Azhar & D.Hussey will provide a reasonable attack. In batting all 4 foreign players can bat + Mandeep, Gukeerat & Chawla will provide the offence. RCB on the other hand rely heavily on 4 batsmen- Gayle, Dilshan, Kohli & de Velliers. Getting anyone of the Big 4 is a tough job. Gayle would be a handful for any bowling. RCB bowling is average. So if Kings XI can get a score >180 + contain the RCB big 4, then it will Game ON. Otherwise RCB will walk all over Kings XI.

pujara is fit so my 11: Gayle, Tiwary, Pujara (1 down), Kohli, AB(wk), Moses, Murli karthik, Vinay Kumar, Jaidev Unadkat, Ravi Rampaul, RP Singh this is ideal as we get 6 batsmen and 6 bowlers. pujara/tiwary need to bat at one end for 20 overs and others should smack the ball around them

I have the funniest feeling that Kings Punjab is going to win this one, but because I am ,in heart, a Bangalore supporter, mainly because of A. B. de Villiers, I hope that he and Gayle will get some decent scores, also for the sake of my fantasy games, in which I play these two every time.
