Big picture

It's one of the quirks of sport. As the league stage of the IPL draws to a close, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab play a match that's as good as a final for them. The winner of the match might put an end to the other team's campaign. Both teams can theoretically make it to the top four, but Sunrisers, fifth on the table with 14 points, have a better chance of doing so given their four-point lead over sixth-placed Kings XI.

Sunrisers remaining matches, after this one, include one away game against Mumbai Indians and two home games against Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. It's not as tough a draw as some of the other teams but a loss here would make every match a virtual knockout for Sunrisers.

They have had only one blemish in their home record - the 77-run thrashing that Chennai Super Kings handed them - but with only two wins in four matches, their away record is a concern. A lot will ride on how well their bowlers can contain the aggressive Kings XI batsmen with their batting still being a weak link.

Kings XI are already in a knockout-like situation after their loss to Royals on Thursday. They squandered a solid start and erred by not sending Miller up the order when Gilchrist fell in the 14th over. From 74 for 1 in the 10th over, they could only add 71 in the next 10 overs. A performance on those lines might well bring an end to their campaign.

Form guide

Kings XI Punjab LWLLL
Sunrisers Hyderabad LWWLL

Watch out for…

Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra have led the Sunrisers attack this season. Between them, they have 29 wickets this season and while Steyn has been effective against the opposition top order, Mishra has managed to strike regularly throughout the innings.

His knock of 42 after three games on the bench showed glimpses of form that Adam Gilchrist will desperately need if he plays and opens the innings against Sunrisers. Against the pace of Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma, Gilchrist will have to get some momentum going and build a platform for the big-hitters from his team to take charge.

Stats and trivia

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad are the only side where a batsman has yet to score 200 runs in this season. Hanuma Vihari is the leading run-scorer with 169 runs from 12 games.
  • Adam Gilchrist has been involved in two of the highest partnerships for Kings XI. He shared a stand of 206 with Shaun Marsh in 2011 and was involved in a 136-run partnership with Paul Valthaty the same season

"With these scenarios come some sort of calmness, we know what we have to do, we don't need to look at other results and how they go and we just got to do what we have to do."
Kings XI captain Adam Gilchrist is pragmatic about what his team needs to do to qualify

What a game today both teams must and win, to keep their hopes to play off, who will win today they will send other team to home.. fully we can enjoy the match i'm suppoting both the teams... who will play good cricket they will win now..

Miller is the man that SRH should target this match for.. If Miller is taken at the beginning they can survive. For Punjab its the "Steyn Remover" the man to avoid. Play safe be safe should be Punjab's motto to win this Match of death.

Hey really interesting match.. Who will win they can keep hope for play offs...!

Posted by slackers11 on (May 11, 2013, 14:06 GMT)

If Sanga really puts the team interest above his personal interests he should sit out of this match. In fact he can go home and practice for champion's trophy as he had enough chances. White though is poor form himself should replace him, White is an impact player and could play the big shots at the end, he also won them the match which went into the super over. So he deserves a chance.

I think Kings Xi will spoil the chances of SRH because SRH batting is very weak and I wonder Sagakarra can bring any spirit to this team at all. Shikar Dhawan fails with bat then it is all over for this team, so soon SRH will come to bottom half teams if they do not win this game.

KXIP paid the price against RR by preparing slow track when they had better stroke players than RR. Both Miller and Marsh could not hit due to slow track and did not capitalize in the last 7 overs after they were 100 for 1 in 13 over. they also lost to CSK (home match) after KXIP were in similar position. And count two matches against MI and CSK (away macth) which were very close duw to Miller's heroics. So for KXIP it seems things are so near yet so far and may be 4rth year running they are going to miss the last four just by a whisker. They xan reverse it if they buy 2-3 good Indian batsmen like Yuvi,Robin,Karthink Indian bowlers like Bhajji and foreign all rounder like Stuart Broad,Duminy,Sammy etc.

@ shley Brackstone, How can you sit Thisara on the Bench.

Posted by Ali_86xz on (May 11, 2013, 9:21 GMT)

Kings XI: Gilchrist, Mandeep, Marsh, Hussey, Miller, Vohra, Satish, Chawla, Praveen, Awana, Bipul. |VS| SunRisers: Parthiv, Dhawan, Vihari, Perera, Sammy, McCullum, Ashish, Mishra, Steyn, Ishant, Karan. Gilchrist looks like he's found his form back and playing at home too should give him a boost. Sanga for Nathan McCullum who can take wickets and hit biggies at the end of the innings. Sammy should captain SRH.

Posted by deepu98 on (May 11, 2013, 8:53 GMT)

i think sanga has got enough chances to be in team ...but he has'nt done well...,,, i think its better to bring a new foreign player may be nathan maccullum, lynn,duminy,mckay... and make sammy the captain becoz he has been the captain of westindies which won the world cup of t20 ....... athen team may be a little better than what it is now ...

Posted by Narabavi on (May 11, 2013, 8:42 GMT)

Though he is in a lean patch, I prefer Sanga over White/ De Cock for this match mainly because of his experience & very good record in Mohali (he played 3 full seasons there).

Posted by jashanbajwa on (May 11, 2013, 8:34 GMT)

Punjab is not ni gud position . But they still.have some chances . Nd it is must to grab them . . . . BEST OF LUCK KINGS for this DO or DIE

Posted by priceless1 on (May 11, 2013, 8:16 GMT)

@ Praveen, he is liability to the team not only for the SRH but also for the SL ODI and T20 team as well , just check his resent performances for the SL team , he comes in at one down and gets bogged down putting pressure on the rest of the batsmen's which resulting others around him parishes trying to lift the CRR but Sanga always remain in good books coz he has the highest score

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 7:53 GMT)

Okay... why is tyagi not playing? is he injured? I think Clint McKay is unavailable coz he is injured and why can't SRH try Lynn or Nathan McCullum

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 7:28 GMT)

Anyway, Sanga or without Sanaga, I'm a big big SRH fan. I'm exciting to see SRH in the play offs. Come on SRH....!!!

Posted by Burrp on (May 11, 2013, 7:27 GMT)

The best line up for SRH to win:

Dhawan, Parthiv, De Kock, White, Vihari, Parera, Ashish Reddy, Karan, Mishra, Steyn, Ishant

Sanga is a disaster for SRH this season.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 6:50 GMT)

Sammy, White, De Kock and Styen should be the 4. Mishra, Sharma, Karan, Dhawan, Vihari, Reddy, Samatray... Considering Sangas playing for himself.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 6:48 GMT)

if pitch isn't flat track srh will win with big margin this game sure.miller can't do big thing in slowtrack.plz publish.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 6:23 GMT)

Hmm... interesting. A team without any batsmen (Sunrisers) vs a team without any bowlers (Kings Xi). Who wins a game like that?

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 6:11 GMT)

Why you guys so much thinking about dropping Sanga? He is a class act & undoubtably world class batsman. He is a very good leader& no need any proof for That. Unfortunately he yet to click his form this time. Once he do that, then he is unstoppable. Nevertheless SRH have no proper replacement for him too. It's a very good funny that some body think White can replace him. He is a player that his national side also forgot for so long. He didn't do much in the Big bash league too. So please stop that nonsense talks. Sanga definitely finds his form & lift his team in the remaining of the series. Go SRH....!!!

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 6:02 GMT)

@praveen - de kock failed in 3 matches but no harm in trying. Sanga has actually been worse than white so far, in 1 more match he has 3 fewer runs while facing 9 more balls. White has scored a 50 in this tournament. SRH havent won because of his captaincy, they have won because of the bowlers doing a great job. Even in 3 games under white when de kock was given a chance. White won 2 of 3 games, they couldve won game vs csk also if last over wasnt given to ashish. Remember that mishra dropped dhoni in that match also!! So if he took that catch & SRH won, white wouldve been 3 win from 3 matches. So his captaincy isnt that much of need & with parthiv in the team he isnt keeping wickets either. So I dont see much use with him in the team if hes struggling. Give chance to someone else, look how sammy has performed. In 5 matches he is only 15 runs behind sanga in 59 fewer balls!!!! Thats 10 overs that sanga wasted for 15 runs compared to sammy. Performance is what counts, not past.

Posted by cricketlover111 on (May 11, 2013, 5:13 GMT)

I'm not really a sunrisers fan, but always like to see an underdog perform and they were given no chance at the start of the season. Where is Cameron White? Is he injured? I can't understand why he is not playing, when he gets going he can tear any bowling attack apart and he was captain at the start of the season. I think the IPL franchises are too quick to drop quality players, at their cost. (i'm not an aussie fan either, White is just a good player)

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 4:52 GMT)

White and De Kock have failed with the bat also. Sanga have a great captaincy record, just check how many they've won when he's captaining and when he was not for SRH. tells a story. He can come into form anytime, and Mohali pitch suits Sanga. He had a great season when he played for Punjab on that fast pitch, he's much better on those pitches than on slower and lower ones

Posted by Narbavi on (May 11, 2013, 4:52 GMT)

LOl so funny here, people who say they know cricket can't even see the fact that sanga has performed so badly that he needs to be dropped immediately, an overseas slot is getting wasted

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 4:46 GMT)

srh should win the toss and bowl first and sammy should be the captain four matches ,white should come in place of sanga

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 3:52 GMT)

@rayfantics Duminy is injured and y place for decock when sammy is there

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 3:47 GMT)

this is gonna be an interesting match.both teams are equal.punjab has strong batting and sunrisers have strong bowling.but punjab have slight edge.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 3:30 GMT)

@siri12345 - we may not know anything about cricket but we can clearly see how he is performing!! This year in 9 matches he score 120 runs with HS of 28 at 88.23 strike rate, without HS 120-28 = 92/8 = 11.5 runs per match. Last year also he scored 200 runs in 12 matches with HS of 82 at 108.69 strike rate. So thats 200-82 = 118/11 = 10.72 runs a game. If this is not under performing then I do not know what is, especially given he is a veteran with lots of experience & runs. He has never scored 400 runs in any ipl, so it is hard to watch him struggle. It would be nice to give chris lynn a string of games like de kock. Though he failed, look at what sammy has done given his chance replacing white. Maybe lynn can be SRH miller. Why not give chance to players on bench, or will SRH miss sangas 11.5 runs a game at 88 strike rate? SRH should include aksath as they need many batsmen. Mishra/steyn/ishant/perera will bowl 16 overs. Sammy/k sharma bowl rest, so need batsmen no matter the cost now

Posted by rayfanatics on (May 11, 2013, 3:21 GMT)

One Sri lankan in Sunrisers and another one in DD, non-performing captains. I am sorry but what is a versatile player like Duminy doing on the sidelines? Make Steyn the captain. Overseas slots should go to Steyn, Duminy, Thissara, Lynn/De Kock. I don't find Vihari talented enough to take on the world's best bowlers. The guy doesn't have that sweet crack in his shots. Completely strokeless. Cmon sunrisers, think outside the box.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 3:08 GMT)

Sunrisers should just forget their previous encounters Chennai as one off day.. I want the strike bowlers totake early wickets rather than to contain runs. Steyn and Mishra; Hope u r hearing. Sanga, for reasons unknown u have been in terrible form. It would be apt to drop yourself from now onwards and blood a foreign player in form. Even, White and DeKock have been in a bad patch of form. But both of them deserve another chance. Also Mc Callum has to be given an outing. As for batting, everyone needs to fire as a unit including the local players. The foreign players wickets are priceless. Shikhar should step up show his class as every match from now is almost a final, and we need to know we have to outperform Bangalore by a match because of the poor runrate. GO Sunrisers !!!!

Posted by siri12345 on (May 11, 2013, 2:44 GMT)

lol so funny here.people who dont even know the abc of cricket are shouting for sanga to be dropped lol.

Posted by vj3478 on (May 11, 2013, 2:44 GMT)

its quiet a record.. 12 games and no batsman crossed 200 runs. Hopefully SRH wud get rid of all of its batsmen that played in this IPL.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 1:39 GMT)

kxip should give chance to player like sunny singh, valthathy, bhatt as their indian player did n't played well

Posted by ODI_BestFormOfCricket on (May 11, 2013, 1:25 GMT)

SRH does not deserve a place in playoffs. Retaining sanga is the biggest mistake.

Posted by rocket_rocket on (May 11, 2013, 0:35 GMT)

nathan mccullum..miser offie who can bat as well....but i think its high time to bring him into the team... also including him gives the variety to the team 2 medium pacers(perera,sammy),2quicks(steyn,ishanth) ,2 leggies(karn, mishra) and 1 offie(mccullum)....perfect bowling combo.....add to that mccullum can tonk a few out of the ground .. csk feasted on the two legspinners...keeping that in mind mccullum is not a bad option to have under the sleeve aganist punjab which boasts of gilchrist,miller,marsh...

Posted by   on (May 10, 2013, 23:47 GMT)

Astronomically speaking, the sun rises only for the first half of the day and then it starts going down. SRH have gone beyond the first half, and their bowlers don't look that powerful any more. Maybe SRH should change its name to just "Suns Hyderabad."

To succeed against newly energized KXIP, SRH batsmen need to fire. But other than Dhawan, the top order plays like a test match. Sanga and Cameron don't seem to fire. By the time Sammy and Perera do something, it is usually too late. So, unless Sanga/White does something, SRH seem settled for either the 5th or the spot. Yes, KXIP and KKR can eventually go above SRH in the rankings.

Posted by   on (May 10, 2013, 23:13 GMT)

Batting has always been a concern for SRH(DC). Most of the the time the batsmen dont get bowled but they mishit the ball straight to a fielder. As noted in the article, vihari is highest scorer with 166 runs but he has a strike rate of 91.35 in 12 matches!! That is horrible especially for coming in slot 3, its t20 match not odi/test. He has done better than kohli in 2008 for rcb but i just dont see the talent in vihari. SRH have one of the lowest totals for power play in ipl2013. I would rather see ashish reddy at #3 than vihari as even mishra/steyn have better SR. I think its time to drop sanga from the team & get a getter overseas player, someone who can actually perform consistently. I dont think SRH will make the playoffs as 2 of 4 are against RR & MI. So wins vs KXIP + KKR & loss vs RR & MI will only leave with 18 points. Would need RCB to lose all 3 matches or 1 win 2 huge loss for lower NRR than SRH. I just dont see it happening, SRH need to get better players in 2014 auction.

Posted by Rishi1418 on (May 10, 2013, 22:54 GMT)

My Playing XI:

DeKock, Dhavan, patel, vihari, sammy, perera, samantry(ashish injured),karan, amit, steyn(C),ishant

Posted by Mr.PALindrome on (May 10, 2013, 22:44 GMT)

Ashish Reddy is out for next match due to a finger fracture. The new pitch in punjab will assist some pace movement and swing for the fast bowlers. SRH might draft in Anand Rajan in place of ashish reddy to boost up the pace department....or someone like Samantray could chip in as well..

Posted by ImpressiveTeer on (May 10, 2013, 21:45 GMT)

SRH should win, but not with a big margin. ( I Still want RCB to make the playoffs and lift the trophy). Want to see some amazing shots from Dhavan and Parthiv. Only coz of Miller in form, Kings XI is looking stronger, but they are no better than SRH in terms of batting. No SL players are performing for the reason they were banned from some parts of India. They are like poison in the team. They play every game to get max $$ and ruin team's chances.

Posted by mmlj on (May 10, 2013, 21:17 GMT)

This needs to be the team for SRH --> Shikar dhawan, Parthiv Patel, Cameroon White (or) JP Duminy, Thisara Pareera, Darren Sammy, Hanuma Vihari, Ashish Reddy, Karan Sharma, Amit Misra, Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (May 10, 2013, 21:02 GMT)

Parthiv, Dhawan, Vihari, Sammy, Perera, McCullum, Ashish Reddy, KSharma, Mishra, Steyn, ISharma. Captain Dhawan.

Posted by Nampally on (May 10, 2013, 20:48 GMT)

@big.apple: Like you I also wondered why Duminy is not included in the XI. I understand he recovering from a serious fracture in SA. Sammy was picked as a replacement for Duminy. Why is Duminy listed in the Squad is my query to SRH management? Sammy can hit the ball. But the main threat to SEH bowling is Miller & Marsh both very powerful hitters. SRH must find a way of getting them out. Hopefully Gilchrist is still out of form!. SRH batting rests on the shoulders of Dhawan. Hopefully he will play responsibly at one end . All foreign SRH batsmen are under performing. It is SRH bowling that has kept them alive so far!

Posted by   on (May 10, 2013, 20:48 GMT)

@big.apple @Abitha

Duminy would have been the First pick ahead of Sanga and probabaly he would have been Captain contender. Steyn, Perera, Duminy would have started from the Season start. But ALAS he is nursing an injury and he is not available for the entire Season. So Lets hope White/De Cock take the responsibility. Steyn captaining should not be a bad idea either what say guys He was the one along with Tom Moddy who is doing all the talking in the huddle

Posted by Mr.PALindrome on (May 10, 2013, 20:28 GMT)

3 important things here. 1) We should not really comment on the leadership skills of white and Sangakkara and both of them have done a fairly good job, but when it comes to batting, definitely White is always a better pick than Sangakkara. 2) I can see many people talking about Duminy here but HE IS OUT OF IPL 2013 DUE TO INJURY and hence he cannot be a part of the plans. AA Reddy has provided a lot of useful contributions lower down the order rather than Akshath Reddy who have failed consistently even after giving many opportunities at the top of the order. And more over with Patel and Dhawan opening with Vihari and White to follow, there will not be a place for Akshath Reddy who is a top order batsman.

Posted by chris292917 on (May 10, 2013, 20:17 GMT)

you guys seriously questioning sammys selection also. he has played 4 matches . won a mon of the match.......his first game he saved the side from utter shame.....what more does he need to do ....

Posted by Abitha on (May 10, 2013, 19:51 GMT)

I do feel Sanga should sit and give way for White who is a better Leader send him as no.3 or 4 once the ball loses its shine drop Sammy and add Duminy who is also a good spinner Drop AA .Reddy and bring Akshath

Posted by Mr.PALindrome on (May 10, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

In this vital match for both KXI and SRH, the disadvantage lies with the Sunrisers as Mohali comprise of batting conditions which they are notl their stronghold and SRH has two legspinners against the likes of Gilchrist, Marsh and Miller who are lefthanders. In these conditions, SRH should get in White instead of Sangakkara to boost up the batting. Getting Quinton de cock in place of Sammy is also not a bad option but considering the two legspinners against many left handers, they should persist with Sammy to cover up their overs to an extent. The conditions wont change much but the ideal scenario for SRH would be to win the toss, bat first, put in a total in excess of 160 and defend it. SRH XI should be Dhawan, Parthiv, DeCock/Sammy, Vihari, White, Perera, AA Reddy, Karan Sharma, Mishra, Steyn, Ishant. KXI (same team) but should try to get in Azhar Mahmood instead to Neser as he is definitely a better bowler and his batting abilities will also come into play.

Odds: 45% SRH - KXIP 55%

Posted by big.apple on (May 10, 2013, 19:05 GMT)

Agree with the 'drop Sanga' sentiments here: I would rather see someone like Duminy who can actually hit the ball a long way, walking in at number 3. Is he sick? Why isn't he given a chance yet?

Posted by priceless1 on (May 10, 2013, 18:24 GMT)

Can Sanga sit out and allow either Decok or white ( or anybody else)to play the remaining games? coz SRH cannot continue to play and compete with just 10 men in the side

Posted by SurlyCynic on (May 10, 2013, 18:16 GMT)

Sanga has now had 9 innings, scored 120 runs at a terrible strike rate of 88 and a highest score of 28. Last year his results were similar. How much longer will they keep selecting him? He is not a big hitter and is not cut out for T20 cricket.

If White or De Kock come in for him they might also fail, but at least if they succeed they can clear the boundary which is what Sunrisers really need! There is no point in keeping Sanga.
