Mumbai seek gains in mismatch

Match facts

May 11, 2013
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)

Big Picture

With a place in the playoffs at stake, Mumbai Indians face the easiest of their next four opponents first up in Pune. Pune Warriors have lost eight consecutive games and have no chance of qualifying and a win against them could lift Mumbai to second place, with 18 points. They come into the game after overpowering Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at home.

If Mumbai slip up against Warriors, it will open up the table for at least two other teams vying for the playoffs - Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. They return to the Wankhede for their next two matches - where they haven't lost a game - but Mumbai wouldn't want to leave too much for the last minute.

With nothing to play for, Warriors can only cause upsets in their three remaining games. Their batting was the biggest letdown against Knight Riders, with only two passing double figures in a tepid chase. Another loss will put them on par with their worst slump of nine consecutive losses, which they suffered last year.

Players to watch

It's to Warriors' misfortune that their star Indian player, Yuvraj Singh, hasn't fired in this IPL. Yuvraj averages a shade under 20 in ten games with no half-centuries. At times he has got starts but failed to convert. In his most recent innings, he fell for just 1. Having been overlooked for India's one-day squads for the Champions Trophy and the tri-series in the West Indies, the coming games will be his chance to get some confidence back.

The new responsibility of captaincy hasn't affected Rohit Sharma's batting. He leads the run charts for Mumbai this season with 430 runs at 53.75. Having replaced Ricky Ponting as captain, it appears as if Mumbai are looking to him as their long-term leader.

Stats and trivia

  • Since their IPL debut in 2011, Warriors have lost 32 matches, winning just 10. They have beaten Mumbai just once in three attempts.
  • Rohit Sharma has hit 25 sixes in this edition, second behind Chris Gayle.
  • Kieron Pollard has the most caught and bowled dismissals - 13 - in T20s.

Quotes

"He is very cool on the field. He takes his own decisions. We have a few seniors and as a youngster when a senior says something, there is a little bit of pressure but he handles it very well."
Pragyan Ojha on Rohit Sharma

i want pune to win so that still there is a fight for playoffs , utthapa needs to come down the order manish needs to open and finch for at least once show responsibility ..u need to play mature innings not a 5 over blitz kreigh, u have the potential .and today is yuvraj's day bat 2 down use taylor you need specialist batsman have spinner in your side any spinner will do doesnt matter as long as he is left arm orthodox spinner and for MI you dont need my wishes you are a good team in ipl .i wonder why not give new players also chance rest malinga see if you can still beat weakest ipl team or no play blizzard and maxwell they both are awesome any one who follows big bash would play maxwell and blizzard .all the best give us a good show.

best captain to MI lasit malinga or pollard o dont be confuse with sachin nd rohit

  • on May 11, 2013, 9:48 GMT

wish punter would get to play the match! if maxwell and ponting get in place of pollard and dwayne smith mi would win the game

  • on May 11, 2013, 9:35 GMT

Just 1 game I would like to see maxwell instead of smith. I know that smith has been doing a good job for MI currently, but putting maxwell in now rather than when (and if) MI seal a playoff berth and with nothing to play for, I mean that won't do anyone any good. Also Rohit's captaincy well, I won't divulge too much into that as he is still not a regular in Indian cricket team... and also in comparisons with kohli in captaincy we would need to compare only whether he cranks up or no... whether he can pull rabits out of hat, well that is still a long way to go... no one apart from MSD has that capacity currently...

With so many Indian players in his close vicinity, Dwayne Smith has adopted Indian players' approach, first thinking about his own performance & then think for the team (like Ganguly, Laxman & sachin Tendulkar). Dwayne Smith is doing the same, scoring runs for himself at low strike rate,,, probably thinking about next auction.

@Damian Kerbex::::Damien, talking about ur proposed PWI lineup, its not possible to win regularly with this kind of combination, why you need 11 batsmen in a T20 lineup????? To be a good competitive T20 team, you should have 6 batsmen (including a keeper & 1 part time bowler), atleast 3 specialist bowlers (2 must be pacers) and other two can be allrounders. If you want ur number 9 or 10 to score runs then it means ur team is already in a BIG CRISIS situation. Without specialist wicket taking bowlers, you cant even defend a total of 180 consistently. Look at CSK lineup, 5 specialist batsmen (including wicketkeeper dhoni) + 2 batting allrounders + 1 bowling allrounder + 3 specialist bowlers.

frankly speaking i feel like laughing when we compare rohit's captaincy with msd , spare me a moment i dont even see rohit perform in international circuit the way he is doing in ipl. he does not deserve to be selected before yuvraj , when yuvi left for few days it was not that he was not performing well .he deserves a place .and rohits heroics are short lived he has a team which is better than rest MI .so after ipl he will come back to square one where his next 5 games will be single digit scores .then one half century then again 5 games he gets a a gift .please concentrate on unmukt chand you need to groom him to replace sehwag which will be too much to ask still he is the only good option.

    The best lineups are -

MI - Sachin Tendulkar, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma (c), Ambati Rayudu, Keiron Pollard, Mitchell Johnson (honestly, he bats better than Harbhajan), Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga, Pragyan Ojha

PWI - Aaron Finch (c), Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Angelo Mathews, Ross Taylor, Mahesh Rawat, Udit Birla (he is a good fielder who can bat if he gets a chance), Wayne Parnell (can bat too), Shrikant Wagh (he must get a chance because he is a decent allrounder), Parvez Rasool (can bat) and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar

In the PWI line-up, all of the players can bat, and many can bowl (Parnell, Wagh, Mathews, Rasool, Bhuvaneshwar, Finch, Taylor)

  • on May 11, 2013, 8:03 GMT

@Nikhil, agree with you, Mi has to give chance to maxwell now, It will be more helpful in playoffs. Yes, I have already considered that MI will enters in Play-off.

I noticed Phil Hughes has an average of above 50 in T20s; why not try him out for a couple of matches? Although now that I think about it, MI would'nt want to disturb their opening combination. Still...would'nt be a bad idea.

  • deadite11 on May 11, 2013, 7:11 GMT

Known result, mumbai will easily take to upper slot. Atleast pune should win the toss and bat first to score above 150 so it will avoid humiliating defeat against mumbai. and moreover nothing to do with captaincy for rohit sharma, he stands as dummy captain with the help of 10dulkar and punter.

  • Lion83 on May 11, 2013, 7:08 GMT

Rohit Sharma is the next Indian caption

  • on May 11, 2013, 6:38 GMT

play mathews at no3.yuvi at next.i think 150 is defendable total for both

  • on May 11, 2013, 5:30 GMT

Replacing Smith in the playing 11 is not a bad idea for MI, but they would be better served with a Left-hander - either of Blizzard, Phil Hughes OR Franklin. Other thing to do - bring Mitchell up the order a bit - he has shown that he is a competent bat & would help Rohit mix the Left & Right combos, with Sachin, Karthik, Rohit, Rayadu, Bhajji & Pollard all being right-handers.

  • beven on May 11, 2013, 5:14 GMT

Rohit Sharma looks good at the run of success till now. And most importantly he s never been in pressure situation so far, Eagerly waiting for the moment how he handle the hectic pressure round the corner around him........May be in the PLAYOFFS/? he cant be as a honeymoon baby(as he is in now ) lol......... he will be in tremendous pressure. THEN V CAN COMPARE WITH KOHLI ETC. (NOT WITH MSD dudes )

  • Narbavi on May 11, 2013, 4:54 GMT

@siri12345 :If you think SRH will win 3 out of 4 matches and RR will lose all their remaining matches then i have to laugh without a doubt,

  • on May 11, 2013, 3:44 GMT

actually i am very surprised at the amazing success that rohit has seen as a captain and subsequently as a batsman.....guess thats the magic of responsibility seen in some players....giving him opportunity is just one thing....giving him assurance and importance is a bit different! msd and fletcher would do well to notice this metamorphosis and get the best out of him in the champions trophy and in the future....in fact we have got one of the best squads in the tournament now.! go india!

  • Sharath274 on May 11, 2013, 3:40 GMT

I think MI shud go in with Maxwell in place of Smith. The pune pitch has tended to be slow and the additional spin option of Mxwell can be handy. Also if he gets going in the Powerplays, it will allow Sachin to settle down nicely with the other stroke makers in the line up slated to come later..Bowling of MI looks solid with Mitch,Malinga,Bhaji and Ojha with Pollard and Maxwell as support..

  • on May 11, 2013, 3:30 GMT

I am heading out to stadium to watch this match! I am gonna wish Mumbai win a well fought match. However, I think it is time to replace Smith as opener. Except for 1-2 matches, he hasn't quite fired. This is putting pressure on Tendulkar to go on hitting. I like Rayadu to open with Sachin and Maxwell be brought in lower middle order!! Hopefully Sachin fires today as I cheer for him from stands today!!! Go Sachin!! Go MI go!!!

  • Tal_Botvinnik on May 11, 2013, 3:20 GMT

If PWI want to win, send Mathews at No.3 and drop Birla,Upadhyay and Yuuvraj singh.

  • siri12345 on May 11, 2013, 3:18 GMT

@dravid gravitas rr to stay as one of the top two teams in points table?? lol.look at rr remaining fixtures.csk(home),mi(away) and srh(away) and i am getting a feeling rr will be thrashed black and blue by all these teams and end on 18 points..on another note srh remaining fixtures-kxip(away),mi(away),rr(home),kkr(home).so out of these 4 games srh will win 3 (barring the mi game) and end on 20points.so it is rr who will fight for 4th place against rcb .rcb remaing fixtures are also reaally really tough.kkr(away),kxip(home) and csk(home).cricinfo plz plz publish.

  • on May 11, 2013, 3:03 GMT

Rohith Sharma is a very good example to Virath Kholi how to behave in the field

  • on May 11, 2013, 2:57 GMT

It will be ideal to give Ponting or Maxwell a chance instead of Smith.... This will experiment for all their remaining games.... If Mumbai wins today and settles at top 2, Ponting, Maxwell, Huges should play together... My wish...

  • on May 11, 2013, 2:00 GMT

Come on PWI, help my SRH team progress further by beating MI. We need all the help we can get,all these big teams like MI/CSK/RCB with their big batting lineups. Like to see some upsets, especially since rohit sharma is performing for MI now. In 3 years he only gave 1 good performance & that was vs kkr in ipl2 where he hit 20 off last over. Other than that he was a big time choker, ojha too he bled runs like anything. So a win for you is a win for us & all the small market teams that wont get to bid for players like pollard/dhoni/gayle/ab/raina again because these teams will use retention clause. Go PWI & all small market teams without overpowering batting lineups.

  • Angry_Bowler on May 10, 2013, 21:50 GMT

@ABanandAvionics: " rohit sharma is a gem of indian cricket", if you think so then let me tell you something about indian talent, there are many diamonds in India waiting for their chance to get in to the team and you know what they don't need to prove themselves with such very long rope this Nohit got.

  • Nampally on May 10, 2013, 21:22 GMT

PW tend to lose matches due to unbalanced XI. I think a XI in the batting order shown will do well - Uthappa (WK), Finch,Smith, Yuvraj, Wright, Nayar, Majumdar, Rasool, Kumar, Parnel, Sharma. In bowling there are 3 seamers in Kumar, Parnel & Wright + 3 spinners in R.Sharma, Rasool, Yuvraj + Nayar as additional seamer. Batting goes up to #7 with Rasool & Kumar can bat too. PW have been playing Dinda, a very expensive bowler, in all matches so far. They should focus on economical bowlers instead. Rahul Sharma was once the most economical IPL bowler about 3 years back. Let him bowl that way again. Rasool is a fine off spinner who got his first chance in the last match! Keep the opposition <150 via tight bowling. That is the only way to win. The PW batting need to focus on responsible batting rather than throwing away their Wkt. via bad shots selection. MI can be beaten as they lost most convincingly 2 matches back. If PW go in with winning attitude, they will win!

  • ladycricfan on May 10, 2013, 20:44 GMT

Don't underestimate PWI. They beat table toppers CSK and RR. If Finch and Uthappa have a good opening partnership they might cause an upset tomorrow. PWI win make the fight for the top 4 more interesting.
