Parthiv Patel smacks one down the ground, Kings XI Punjab v Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL, Mohali, May 11, 2013
Parthiv Patel's first IPL fifty in three years gave Sunrisers a big win © BCCI

Sunrisers Hyderabad kept their bid for making the playoffs more than alive after their win over Kings XI Punjab took them level with Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are placed fourth on the table thanks to a superior net run rate. With 10 points from 13 matches, Kings XI were all but out of the reckoning.

It was a scrappy match full of dropped catches, missed chances and bad shots, played on a patchy pitch. If the bowlers hit the two patches of green on the track, they derived seam movement and variable bounce. The match began with the weaker suits of both sides coming against each other as Adam Gilchrist inserted Sunrisers.

The two youngsters who came into the match, Harmeet Singh and Sandeep Sharma, benefited from a mix of poor strokes and the capricious pitch, to reduce Sunrisers to 52 for 5 in the ninth over.

Parthiv Patel stuck in, though, to score his first IPL half-century in three years. His previous fifty, too, came against Kings XI, but for Chennai Super Kings. The partnership between him and Karan Sharma wasn't the prettiest thing going around, but they added 42 runs, and gave Thisara Perera some sort of platform to launch from.

Perera and Parthiv, helped by a drop by Gilchrist and some ordinary death bowling, added 56 in the last 5.1 overs to take Sunrisers to what looked like an above-par total. It proved to be one, especially with Dale Steyn going for just two runs in the first over and removing Mandeep Singh for a duck.

Shaun Marsh and Gilchrist kept the chase going with a 44-run second-wicket stand. Darren Sammy, however, came on and ended the chase for all practical purposes with three soft dismissals. Marsh and Gilchrist pulled at balls that were not short enough, and fell to the first two balls Sammy bowled.

In Sammy's next over, David Miller, Kings XI's biggest hope, drove a length ball straight down cover's throat. Game over. R Sathish and Sunrisers' fielders tried their best to keep the chase interesting, but Luke Pomersbach's slow innings of 33 off 40 put paid to that.

SRH deserved this victory, thanks to the contributions from Parthiv, Karan and Thisera with the bat and Sammy & Steyn with the bowl. However, they should improve their fielding and batting to stay in contention for the play-offs. I have been observing their batting throughout this tournament and I sincerely believe that they have better batsmen in the lower order than some of the top-order players. These all-rounders like Ashish Reddy and Karan Sharma can definitely come up in the order and play with a better strike rate than H Vihari. One should remember that Vihari is more of a test player mould like Sanga as someone has already pointed it out. So, SRH can consider bringing in Ravi Teja instead of Vihari for the next matches.Ravi Teja is an excellent fielder and can score some quick runs too.Best wishes to SRH

Still can't understand why people thinks wickets of Sanga,Ricky, sachin,Gilly, Marsh, White are big wickets. Lot of criticism there when they played in first XI. These people hardly trying to secure place in a team. I feel these people will put Bradmon as most valuable wicket if he is live and selected by MI team.

I agree with Kristee and Luke has always struggled in Indian conditions. You can see his past record too when he played for KXIP for 1st three years of IPL. When I saw his name in the playing eleven I thought he would open coz he just can not bat against slow bowlers/spinners which he showed yesterday and cost the KXIP the match.Punjab needed just one batter to bat sensible even when they were 52 for 4 as 150 still is modest total. But Gilly played atrocious shot the very next ball When Marsh got out that shows he is not "ON' in this match. Now Gilly should give Azhar,Manan,Gurkeerat and few other inclu foreigners players more chance in the next matches. They won 4 out of first 7 matches but lost 5 out of next killing their fans hope (Azhar was not part of team in most of these matches) .If they want continue support from their fans they should pick some good Indian talent next auction rather than saving money like they did last time.(Like Bhajji Yuvi Rahul sharma play for Punjab)

Posted by ladycricfan on (May 12, 2013, 7:51 GMT)

Parthiv, Perera and Sammy, all three contributed equally to win the match. Take anyone of these three out and KXIP would've won. It depends on who selects the MOM award. Perera won innovative thinker award. What award Sammy needs when he has his little daughter to celebrate, with the pink dummy and all.

Posted by kristee on (May 12, 2013, 6:36 GMT)

Again a batter is preferred for MOM. Actually SRH's fielding, Patel included, was pathetic. Just that KEP played even more badly and lost. Sammy deserved the award, in any case.

Posted by kristee on (May 12, 2013, 6:00 GMT)

Luke has a very good record in T20. Much better than some iconic gentlemen's. Perhaps he is struggling to adapt to the Indian conditions.

Thisara Perrera is the best player of SRH this season. I have a supporter of SRH from this season and he remains my cantain always in the fantasy team. Though still a long way to go for SRH to next into the top four, i hope they will do it. What is most necessary for them is a big innings from their top batsmen like White/Dhawan/Sanga. And adding Sammy into the squad has added some some ice on the cake for their already great bowling attack.

Luke Pormesbach...batting was a surprise for me...a batsman who not out ...played 40 balls...and even team lost by 30 runs...how he can do this...i were Gilli..i might have shoot him...he never tried to do except defense..and save his wicket

Posted by Romenevans on (May 12, 2013, 4:56 GMT)

Hmmmm...did anyone else noticed Luke Pomersbach's suspicious batting? Was he playing to win or lose? Who on earth wants to display his front foot defense in a T20 match specially when team needs 9 runs per over? Strange!

Posted by Sundara-Chandare on (May 12, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

MOM should be Luke Pormesbach.

Chennai and Mumbai are more then certain for play off berths,, For other two spots, fight is between SRH, RCB and RR... Dhawan - Steyn, Watson-Rahane and Gayle -vinaykumar will decide the future of them..

It's quite surprising how an ipl team with no player aggregating more than 200 runs after 12 matches is in top 5 and chance in play offs. Hopefully SRH will work on their batting and not just leave it to fate/bowlers to win matches.

Posted by LovedFansofIndianCricket on (May 12, 2013, 4:02 GMT)

Yesterday MOM should be Sammy. He removed all 3 power hitters. Gilli, Marsh and Miller. But I think they give Parthiv, because to encourage Parthiv. If he is very young player like Vihari, it is Ok but for Parthiv he is senior pro. Poor Sammy

Posted by   on (May 12, 2013, 3:52 GMT)

thisara perera is the unsung hero of SRH...good committed allrounder

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (May 12, 2013, 3:51 GMT)

@sammy fans: SRH batsmen building a well paced innings is a rarity. SRH bowlers picking wickets is something common. By the way Sammy didn't do anything exceptional to dismiss the batsmen. Therefore Parthiv deserved the MoM. Perera is also deserved some credit thats why bagged both the sixer's and nae soch award.

Posted by Sinhaya on (May 12, 2013, 3:39 GMT)

@sachin_vvsfan, spot on right! Sanga is only a test player. Not at all a T20 guy. He should not be playing IPL at all IMHO.

@adkum it was PERERA who got the runnout. Plus Perera scored 31(19), good outfield catch, flat throw for a runnout, and a wicket(shud've been 3, if the catches were held). Perera played the part of ULTIMATE allrounder in the match, SHOULD'VE got the MoM!

Posted by cnksnk on (May 12, 2013, 2:31 GMT)

Teams like KXI, PWI, DD and KKR must use the next few matches in giving the bench a chance. It will give the team, its management, and the fans a view into the talent available before the next auction. Clearly not giving chances at this stage is a dis service to all. Of the lot KKR is the worst where in no one seems to have got a chance even when they were playing poorly. Tendo got his chance in match 12 and he scored. Sanju was not even tried last year and we now see his talent. Who knows what talent is sitting on the bench waiting for chances. GG must stop being delusional on their chances and give the folks a chance. Same with KXI ( where Gilly is not expected next year - and going by his current form should not even aspire) and DD. PWI seems to be a hopeless case

Posted by   on (May 12, 2013, 2:12 GMT)

I can't see why the kings XI didn't go with Mahmood instead of Pomersbach. Mahmoods bowling would have looked ideal for this wicket. The 4 foreign players the kings need to play is gilchrist, marsh, miller and Mahmood. Pomersbach suited to the top order due to his weakness against spin and because gilchrist is there and gilchrist keeps wicket there's no point of having both.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (May 12, 2013, 2:07 GMT)

@Baseball-sucks: The first good step SRH management have done is keeping out Out-Of-Form Mr.Sanga. White has captained excellently here. Unfortunately he got out for umpire's mistake otherwise he would have scored more runs with good strike rate. MOM contenders should be either Parthav or Sammy. Sammy took important wickets, Gilly, Shan Marsh, and Millar and awana too. and he has given only 22 runs. Parera has played well, but not MOM contender at all. I believe Sanga stays away in remaining matches as well. He has been a bad pick by SRH I believe they will sell him in next auction. What do you say??

Posted by Sudhir65 on (May 12, 2013, 0:25 GMT)

There are some negative comments about Darren Sammy's pacifier celebration. But I think it is very unique and very interesting. Keep it up Darren. We enjoy it.

Very nice performances from various players and a good victory for SRH but they still need to get better in some areas....very bad catching yet again resulted in a couple of drops an some poor shot selection from Dhawan and Vihari. If SHR like to be in the play oofs then they need to better their standards to beat a power packed team like MI. MI is very strong and in their home conditions they are even stronger to beat.

Rather than depending on results of other matched, SRH need to focus on wining on the rest of the matches and head into the play offs straight and with good momentum to face the other top teams.

Well done SRH !!! but LOL @Ness Wadia co-owner of kings xi Punjab, every interview he gives he keeps talking only about how great his foriegn players are, at the same time not even mentioning Indian players one, every time he kept mentioning Luke Pomersbach !!! well he was clueless today, when would these owners and there foriegn coaches realise that in Indian conditions 2 out of 4 stipulated qouta for foriegners has to be seam bowlers .There is a reason why top 10 batters in the current IPL contains 7 Indian batters and it is vice versa in top 10 bowling list .You can't fill 4 foriegners in your top 5 of batting order if half of them are not good enough, now with Kings xi out i hope Manan Vohra is given a chance, i like the look of this guy , he seems secure against fast bowlers , he might not have scored too many runs but he has potential.Mandeep needs to realise that there are other shots apart from cut and the pull and trying to play square all the time .

Posted by adkum on (May 11, 2013, 20:50 GMT)

I know it was a difficult choice forPlayer of Match award but I think that Sammy with 4 wickets and an run out must have been a good contenderfor the award. While Patel did set up a winning score, Sammy bowled economically and got valuable wickets at the right time preventing any player from running away with the match. I wish him well and hope that WI make him the permanent T20 Captain. WI should relieve him of the test captaincy and keep him as T20 and ODI captain as he is best suited for the shorter version of the game. I am sure he will be gaining good experience at this IPL which will serve him well in future. He is a good cricketer for the short game. I don't think he is cut out for test cricket.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 20:50 GMT)

I think sammy deserves MoM, of course PP played a good innings, but sammy got the wickets of King's cream batsmen.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 19:57 GMT)

Good job by parthiv/k.sharma/thisara to post a good total to defend. Great bowling job by sammy/thisara/steyn, thisara couldve gotten 2 more wickets if fielders caught the easy chance. Parthiv in last 2 matches score 101 runs to becoming leading scorer which is huge surprise. I think moving perera to #3 slot after patel/dhawan would help improve power play as vihari is really useless to bat that high. Even k. sharma & ashish reddy have shown better batting skills. Looking at points table its a bit funny that KXIP/KKR who have 3 more losses than SRH have better NRR. So unless SRH win all matches it will be hard to make semis if theyre tied in points with rcb due to negative NRR. Will this be first time 2 or 3 teams will end up with 20 points? GO SRH GO!

Agree with skill90..some of these so called sri lankan's comments are an utter disgrace here. Much like the very biased and immature comments made by bd fans in the last series. They still want sanga to play when any person with even a tiny brain can see he is struggling big time. He IS one of the best in tests and odis but he is clueless in this format. So just rest the case guys. But as a sl glad to see Perera doing well. Srh also should drop vihari as he is also a batsman in the mould of sanga and is suited to play tests rather than t20. Thanks

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 19:23 GMT)

SRH wicket keeping is a bit of a worry, Patel missed a stumping chance and few byes as well, maybe Sanga play as a keeper batsmen ? but his batting form is a big worry

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 19:23 GMT)

How many more matches SRH has to be win to confirm the berth in final four?

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 19:10 GMT)

this team (sunrisers)are really giving it their all to be in the play-offs really hope they make it ,great blokes led by sanga....!who charged up perera the guy has always been talked up by commentetars but not living up to the hype but boy!hasn't he done well.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (May 11, 2013, 19:06 GMT)

@Skilled90 : Nice try pal, But Its a bit of an old trick. In case you didn't know, MOM should go to the player who made the biggest impact on the final result. Thisara Perera made the biggest impact on the final result of the match by his allround performance. I guess, if had stopped pretending to be somebody else n learnt more about Cricket, you would have easily realized my argument. lol G'day !!

Good strategy SRH to keep Pomer..bach not out. He should have hit the stumps himself early. atleast Satish would play with other by rotating strike.

Posted by Mr.PALindrome on (May 11, 2013, 18:52 GMT)

People here are criticizing Cameron White but I will tell you one basic yet effective logic here to say as to why Cameron White in this match is a better captain than Sangakkara from the previous match. It is basic common sense that legspinners are very easy to score off by the left handers and the wrong ones are very predictable. Sangakkara persisted with Karan and Mishra, two leggies against Hussey and Raina who are two lefthanders on what looked like an unexpected batting track. Here is this case, White went with Vihari against the lefties like Gilchrist, Marsh, Miller and Pomersbachand and persisted with him till Miller got out and a righthander Satish came into picture. And it is unjustifiable to say Cameron White did not perform or something. If you look carefully, he was pretty comfortable at the crease, scored more than run a ball and the most important of all, watch the replays again and again. He had an inside edge onto his pads which was given out LBW by a no-good umpire!

Posted by Abitha on (May 11, 2013, 18:42 GMT)

It is UNFAIR! Sunrisers XII playing against Kings "X" Punjab. Pomesbach in fact played for Sunrisers. Who Said Catches WIN Matches. Ask Vihari and Karun Sharma. Had the Catches of Luke been taken Punjab would have won Comfortably. Well Bowled Sammy. I feel he is over-doing the Baby Soother ACT. Kashinath

Posted by Skilled90 on (May 11, 2013, 18:42 GMT)

@baseball-sucks. Machan, im saying ,machan to let you know am sri lankan too. Of most of the sri lankan comments I read yours are the most immature. When our players are out of form accept it, this is the Indian league, not sri lankan, also it kinda makes our players look bad with your bragging, yes they are having a poor run in form so let them settle it in quietly. << based on your previous comments on team selection. only performers deserve to be on the team, i acknowledge tissara missed on a couple of MOM but when a batsman stays put for nearly 20 overs while wickets falls and makes the highest score he deserves a mom coz his innings was the basis and backbone of the total score, what if he had gotten out cheaply? tissera would pretty much had no one to bat alongside .

Posted by AneYako on (May 11, 2013, 18:38 GMT)

@Sachin: You need to 'read' properly. Failures was predicted for the replacements, such as Clark...it wasn't about the team losing. And as predicted yes, Clark and that other new fellow was useless in this game

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 18:34 GMT)

SRH heavily depend on Perera.if he fires then all is ok.but if not????????

Posted by JamesSmithee on (May 11, 2013, 18:20 GMT)

Why White again ? He don't have a place in the Australian national team.

Posted by Baseball-Sucks on (May 11, 2013, 18:19 GMT)

I think Thisara Perera should have been the man of the match for his allround performance. Batting - 32 @ SR of 168 (the highest SR) , Bowling - 4 overs, 19 runs , 1 wicket ( the best eco. 4.75) , Fielding - 1 awesome catch n a run out. Actually Thisara Perera's 32 made the difference between 2 teams. This is the 2nd time he missed the MOM out. MOM - Thisara > Sammy > Patel .

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 18:16 GMT)

so poor feilding htey need to fix it if they wanna go for semis and their batting still needs to improve. can't depend on 3 guys every day.Nice one perera. he should be given lot of credit. sanga needs to stay out. ppl drop catches pls go home and catch frogs. Patel is coming to some form here. good to see

Posted by chetan129 on (May 11, 2013, 18:14 GMT)

I agree Parthiv Patel innings was crucial, but Darren Sammy deserved the MOM for his game changing spell. I guess this would be the best 11 SRH can field in and have one of the top order batsmen bat through the inning and a free Licence for the bug hitters. They should bowl Vihari abut more when there are left handers on strike and I complement white's captaincy as he did squeeze in couple overs for few runs from Vihari. Anyways all the best SRH going forward.

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (May 11, 2013, 18:06 GMT)

Funny game. The leaders place is uncertain here and Some SL fans are already upset with sanga's absence and predicted SRH defeat but they managed a victory here(shall i say Luke gifted this). Sanga is a class act in Tests but not a joy to watch in T20

Anyways Lukes innings reminds me of Sir Jadeja's outstanding 25 of 35 balls in T20 WC which we lost marginally. Thanks for gifting 2 points Sir Luke pommerbach

Posted by AneYako on (May 11, 2013, 17:48 GMT)

Thisara you Beauty! Great batting, great bowling (If the wicket keeper was decent he would had such an amazing economy too) and really good fielding (Including a great run out). The fielders dropped two catches off of him if not he would had at least two wickets.

Posted by priceless1 on (May 11, 2013, 17:36 GMT)

Today's " unbelievable drop catch by an Indian fielder" award is going to "Karan Sharma " congrats!

Posted by Greatest_Game on (May 11, 2013, 16:39 GMT)

Udam Senadheera. We'll said. I think SRH should field a team of bowlers only, plus Perera & Dhawan. The bowlers have been scoring all the runs anyway!

Posted by AneYako on (May 11, 2013, 16:38 GMT)

@Thamara: So White is worse than Sanga but he should have been the captain? That's some fine logic there. Same great level of logic used by the SH management it seems. Sanga has been the captain for the most matches. Under his captaincy they had the most success this IPL. Choice is clear, going against it has shown it's results again and again

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 16:00 GMT)

It is understandable that Sanga was left out of the team. He hasn't performed well in this IPL yet. The problem is that Cameron white is even worse. He should not be in the eleven either. I think this team has a very good bowling attack. But it is their batsmen who have let the team down. Dale Steyn is the best bowler by far, and Ishanth Sharma is always a threat to the batsmen. Thisara Perera & Amith Mishra are bowling well too. Changing the captain every now and then is not a good thing for the consistency of the team. They should have stuck with Cameron White right from the start. Sangakkara is not a T20 batsman by any means. He cannot hit big shots. it's as simple as that. There is no denying that he is a wonderful batsman. But he is not cut out for 20 over cricket. In T20 cricket, selectors should not go by the stats or the reputation of players in other two formats. T20 cricket cricket is a completely different thing, especially when it comes to batting.

Posted by   on (May 11, 2013, 15:39 GMT)

Axing Sanga didn't help the Batting order at all today. SRH need a Specialist in T20 Format like JP Duminy. It is very unfortunate that he had got injured. Anyways, SRH Bowlers have become all Rounders in this Season. Sammy, K Sharma, Perera, Mishra & Steyn had to take on the Batsman's responsibility as well.

Posted by ddr3 on (May 11, 2013, 15:21 GMT)

Hyderabad won't reach Semifinals for sure...and actually they should not reach the semis coz if they do then the semi-finals gonna be very uninteresting and below par!

Posted by Resultpredictor on (May 11, 2013, 15:20 GMT)

Will SRH score 100 today? Worst selection and poor batting by SRH cost them the game and place in playoffs is lost. Congrats Punjab for huge victory.

Posted by Tal_Botvinnik on (May 11, 2013, 15:17 GMT)

Sanga or White doesn't make a difference does it? Sammy should be dropped and McCllum must come in. McClum brings more variety to SRH attack and is a better batsman than sammy. Lynn should have came in for White. Lynn plays spin better and deserves a chance.

@Mujahid Hasan Finally, the middle order has proved that it is not because of sanga
