Sunrisers Hyderabad threatened to blaze into the playoffs. They then opened the back door for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Then Darren Sammy danced down the track and lofted Iqbal Abdulla for successive sixes to send the Uppal Stadium into a frenzy. Sunrisers had taken the final playoff spot in their debut IPL season, after almost blowing it towards the end.

Having watched their bowlers tie Rajasthan Royals in knots during a similar chase two nights ago, Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan came out determined to be positive. They continued in the same manner for 89 runs in just over 11 overs, and had it not been for a rather needless reverse-sweep attempted by Dhawan, Sunrisers, Royal Challengers and their respective fans would have been spared several tense minutes.

It was Parthiv who all but sealed the chase at the start. He came out in a volley of cuts, pulls and flicks when offered the slightest width. By the time Dhawan slog-swept Yusuf Pathan for his first boundary, Parthiv was already on 31 off 20. Dhawan now started to toy with the bowling, walking out to hit through extra cover and jumping to slash Jacques Kallis for six over cover.

This was the same slow pitch on which Kolkata Knight Riders had limped to 130. Even after Dhawan went leg-before to Abdulla, Sunrisers needed 31 off 40 at one stage. Then Parthiv walked out to Abdulla and was given leg-before.

Hanuma Vihari, as he has done often in the season, sucked momentum out of the innings. And then heaved a top-edge to backward point after making 6 off 13. In between, he was involved in a terrible mix-up that led to the run-out of Cameron White. Shami Ahmed disturbed Thisara Perera's bails with a yorker, and Sunrisers suddenly needed 19 of 13.

Fortunately, Biplab Samantray got one on the pads to put it away for four. Sammy, who had been made to look absolutely clueless by Sunil Narine during the 17th over which was a maiden, found enough courage to step out to Abdulla and finish the game with a couple of sixes.

Only Yusuf has been able to hit sixes when Knight Riders batted after winning the toss. Gautam Gambhir had run himself out again, and none of the other batsmen had been able to get the measure of a slow pitch and an attack that had thrived on it through the season.

Dale Steyn and Anand Rajan, who replaced the ill Ishant Sharma, hardly provided any width, and the legspinners Amit Mishra and Karan Sharma tied Knight Riders down further. They tossed it up, they bowled flat and quick, they turned legbreaks, they turned their googlies. And Knight Riders plodded on, finding no rhythm at all.

Yusuf has not done much during three seasons at Knight Riders, but he appeared to find some touch towards the end of this season. He looked determined from the outset and even recovered from a 147 kph Steyn bouncer to pull him for six next ball. He was not able to get too much strike at the death, and though he hit the last ball of the innings for six, 130 did not challenge Sunrisers. Until, that is, they themselves panicked when the playoffs beckoned, before Sammy held his nerve.

@Nampally, I think White should carry on as he has been a superb captain for SRH. As a captain he is better than Sangka. And in the case of form, white has scored one 50 and one 40. Sanga did not even managed to do that. Captaincy is vital in T20.

I'm pleased that SRH qualified. It's nice when teams without As many marquee names like RR and SRH qualify. RCB have 3 of the best T20 batsman in the world in Gayle,AB and Kohli but were probably over reliant on these players. I feel the 2 of the key reasons why SRH qualified are Steyn and Sammy. Sammy should have played from the off and despite still not being captain now , I feel he should take the reins. CSK and MI are rightfully the favourites but it would be great to see RR or SRH at least make it to the final

@gsingh7 on (May 20, 2013, 9:13 GMT) Bad luck - RCB lost out fair and square. If your past predictions are anything to go by I reckon it may be worth a punt on SRH

Mighty sixes do not win tournaments. Consistent play does.

Posted by ladycricfan on (May 20, 2013, 13:08 GMT)

It is going to be CSK v SRH finals.

CSK - Most consistent. Good away record. History of previous successes in play-offs and finals.

MI - Good home record. But away record not so good. Memory of past performances in play- offs and finals might trouble them.

RR - Played well under Dravid. Good home wins. Away record not so good. Won IPL 1. Since then never reached the play-offs. Look tired after the recent spot fixing saga. Lack of Indian spinners will upset the team balance.

SRH - Good home record. Delhi and kolkatta conditions similar to Hyderabad. Reaching play-offs with the underdogs tag attached will energise them to go even higher.

Sanga has been inconsistent whole season though he scored couple of good 20's white can play the aggressor better than him. Besides it's not like SRH is void of other capable captains when there is able sammy in the side. White could play some big shots in anycase playoff match went to super over. Sanga come home. Show your stuff in Champions league. Not this hit and giggle series. Good luck thisara, you're the most valuable possesion SRH got. Go win the title.

Surprisingly, Steyn stands on 5th place in an analysis of IPL 6 bowling. 3 Indicators were taken namely - Wickets per Innings, Economy Rate and Strike Rate. Subsequently, those ballers were filtered having 10 or more wickets and an economy rate of 7 or less, thus 13 ballers were available for further analysis. In each case top and bottom ranker were provided a score of 13 and 1 respectively. On adding the scores of all 3 indicators, the result was astonishing! The ballers in decreasing order are - Sunil Narain (35), Mohit Sharma (34), Faulkner (33), Amit Mishra (26) and Dale Steyn and Rampaul both securing 22 points!!! Look at the unsung achievement of young Mohit Sharma!!!!!

Weldone SRH. This team is looking much better under White's leadership. Sanga never looked like a cataincy material & his current batting form is aweful.

KKR's major issue is that overrated Kallis.look at his batting SR 96.Rajat Bhatia is better batsman than Kallis IN THIS IPL.I think KKR lost Shakib badly. He is an aggressive cricketer than Kallis.

My guess is it is going to be a CSK vs MI finals. CSK will most likely beat MI in the Q1 going by the way they play play-offs and SRH will beat RR in the eliminator. RR's morale is completely down and I can see that in Dravid's face. It is ironic that it has to happen to one of the most ethical captain and player around. So RR to win from this frame of mind will be a tough ask but who knows, they may spring a surprise though. If it is SRH, then MI will easily beat them. If it is RR, then MI will have a tough time since RR would have gotten over their crisis situation to beat SRH and would be upbeat. So it would be CSK vs MI or CSK vs RR in the finals. Finals can then be anybody's game.

Virat Kohli should have thought seriously on how to win the away matches, inspite of doing that he has struck to his own trend of working, that is playing aggressively only after the tournament has gone out of his reach. He should have done this in all their away matches.... In the Triangular series, Australia also he has chased down Huge total of 300+ in 36 overs, only after the tournament was out of reach for India. Asia Cup also same thing. Mr. Kohli... You have to play well Through out any tournament.... and not only after the tournament is out of your reach

Posted by srdoc on (May 20, 2013, 8:55 GMT)

SRH!! Probably the well behaved team of the tournament and heartening to see even IPL too offering a great deal of indulgence. The players have won the hearts of the fans, and to their credit going on lap of honor at Uppal after the match, acknowledging the tributes paid by the fans all through its matches at Hyderabad, is a true reflection of the players and fans emotional bonding. Well done SRH as a team !! Coming to Vihari's batting position; should the start is good no need send him up the order and slowing the things, but a quick loss of a wicket or two in the initial stages, he could be sent up the order to steady the things. As regards to Sammy, with 2 first class centuries and only test century to his name, he never fancies himself as a great batman, that is the reason why he prefers to come so low down the order in all formats of the game for WI. SRH has to utilize his abilities as a bowler who can bat, and bats aggressively too.

RCB got into trouble because of over hype and dependancy on some batsmen,,,,

Posted by EdGreen on (May 20, 2013, 8:01 GMT)

RCB were unfortunate with their bowling - a combination of injuries and players coming to the ends of their careers meant that far too often even big totals were insufficient. Its a shame to lose one of the most exciting teams at this stage but that's cricket.

Sunrisers once Sammy added balance to the side started to look very impressive and Watto + Dravid seem to be driving RR very effectively.

SRH will get through to finals if they DROP VIHARI.....His scoring rate is very low and he is making things very difficult to the next batsmens.......He is not at all a #T20 player......Hope SRH make this change in the playoff......Gd Luck Risers.....

Posted by mjrvasu on (May 20, 2013, 7:46 GMT)

For SRH to advance further, Ishant Sharma should continue to remain ill, White should sit out, and get a really decent batsman in his place, it could be an Indian too. There is no law that each team must have 4 foreign players, or is there?

Posted by KPWinners on (May 20, 2013, 7:45 GMT)

Good to see SRH in playoff. Bye-bye to SRKs team and Kohli's team. Unnecessary aggression by RCB captain is responsible for sinking their ship. Very poor captaincy by RCB captain.

Posted by jasonpete on (May 20, 2013, 7:26 GMT)

Posted by BDforever on (May 20, 2013, 6:25 GMT), your logic is still flawed.CSk beat SRH and Kolkata in their own home grounds with srilankan players in it.So how can you say that these teams will easily beat CSK in chennai, when they themselves lost to CSK in their home ground by playing srilankan players? MI beat chennai in chennai without malinga and beat CSK in mumbai with malinga.By resting Muralidharan for chennai,RCB found a good bowler in name of Ravi rampaul and RCB never played murali after that match except one which they lost badly.Pune found Steven smith by resting Mathews for chennai match and they won comprehensively that match.Instead all this, you do research why your team RCB lost many matches outside and that will clear why they don't deserved to be in top 4 .Lastly it was Bisla innings that won KKR the trophy, if he don't play that fine innings ,they would have ended up runners and you wouldnt have got chance to praise only shakib for Bisla innings and KKR trophy.

Chris Gayle, Kohli, ABDV were entertaining as well as annoying. Their over agrressiveness did not help them to achive their aim if it was winning IPL. They proved that brutal hitting alone is not enough. Teams with cool headed captains, balanced teams and team spirit made others to do better. Personally I am very happy to see Sunrisers in last four although I am not a fan of any particular team.

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 7:14 GMT)

To RCB fans - maybe next year try to not post high totals. Sometimes team struggle to win games chasing smaller totals than having 160-180 score & starting to hit from first over 8+ an over. Ever notice if score is below 145 teams score at lower rate, then in middle overs things ground to a halt & then they are forced to hit in last few overs to win the match? As your bowling isnt good right now, maybe defending lower total willbe easier if batsmen dont pummel bowlers chasing scores near 180 put up by gayle/kohli/ab.

SRH will win this title...

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 7:05 GMT)

@sandeep_maddu - he may show "stability & sanity" when batting with wobbly SRH lineup but any player on any team can bat at low 90 strike rate. Even today if you saw dhawan took a while to settle in. He was 15 off 20 before he started hitting hard at the end of 8th over & he made 42 off 35. With vihari that just doesnt happen, in RR match biplap samantray joined vihari when 3 wickets fell & vihari was 1 off 6. After next 4 overs they had each faced 16 balls with 10 off 16 & biplap on 14 off 16. After another 3 overs, vihari 19 off 26 & biplap 22 off 24. In next over vihari was out after scoring 19 off 28, biplap stayed & scored 55 off 46 balls. That is biggest different with vihari, even if he faces 20+ balls he cannot start making runs. So its waste to have him bat that high, in MI match where SRH got 178. He scored 41 off 37 while other 3 batsmen scored at 143 to 186 strike rate. He slows innings down, he needs to face few balls & hit at 100SR or above. Otherwise give way to someone.

Posted by priceless1 on (May 20, 2013, 7:02 GMT)

and the dream run continues for the SRH ..( but i highly doubt they will advance any further though )

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 6:56 GMT)

Sunrisers truely deserves place in play offs as it was purely team efforts -- Go sammy Go

Posted by Edassery on (May 20, 2013, 6:52 GMT)

RCB is done by the arrogance that came with its star captain. Kohli has been mostly unnecessarily aggressive for a captain while Cameron White, standing in for Sanga, kept things simple and straight. His team mates like Dhawan, Sammy, Parthiv, Vihari etc are ground rooted and focused on their game. Good to see that two over-aggressive captains (Gambhir and Kohli) who had a spat earlier aren't in the play off.

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 6:45 GMT)

Dravid was the best captain in this IPL. he led the team that don't have lots of big names but still he led the team to top four. hope that see his team in final.

Posted by BDforever on (May 20, 2013, 6:45 GMT)

@mogs, @joseyesu, @arunkumar: Logic doesn't work every time. According to logic Pune should have lost against Chennai at Chennai but Pune beat Chennai at Chennai. It doesn't matter the players who are not allowed belong to which country or whether they played for previous IPL seasons or not. I'm saying it's not fair when one team plays with their full strength but the opposition is forcefully not allowed to play with their full strength. Some of those matches that played at Chennai were very very tight even though only one team was allowed to play with their full strength. You could imagine what could have been the results of those matches if oppositions were also allowed to play with their full strength. RCB and KKR are my favorites since the 2nd IPL. I'm very disappointed that RCB was out since one team got an unnecessary advantage by not allowing players.

Posted by ladycricfan on (May 20, 2013, 6:42 GMT)

Why everybody is saying that SRH have no stars except Steyn? Dhawan, Parthiv, ISharma and Mishra, all play for india. Sammy is the captain of the world champions. Perera is good as any other all rounders. White captained Australia but out of form at the moment. When he clicks he can contribute substantially. Only Vihari, Samantray and KSharma are uncapped players. Vihari has been MOM few times. Samantray played well against RR and showed what he is capable of. KSharma is an exciting prospect. It is because of the Hyderabad pitch, the matches have been low scoring encounters. If they play to their potential they can beat any team and win the trophy.

Posted by hotcric01 on (May 20, 2013, 6:37 GMT)

CSK is most deserved team to win the trophy. But I love RR to win.

Posted by Viv-Viru on (May 20, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

It took the very last match of the season to finalize the last four. Many matches were decided in last over and some in the very last ball or two. One could not even have scripted a better tournament than what the IPL has been producing year after year. Hope IPL makes it easier for fans to buy tickets for the next season. Even after buying on-line having to pick up physical tickets at a remote location is just horrendous for paying customers.

Posted by CosmicPower on (May 20, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

Somewhere something went wrong for the RCB Hai Dear Kohli, this defeat is not for ever. It is very transient. Your Batting Fielding then the captaincy everything were above average, Flawless, but dependency on Gayle would have been reduced and many players were under utilized. Hope to see more in the next IPL

Posted by yorkslanka on (May 20, 2013, 6:26 GMT)

Well done to SRH who played as a team throughout this tournament .can they win it, probably not but who knows, this is t20 and nothing is predictable in this format. Hopefully SRH can get the third spot and get champions league qualification.

Posted by BDforever on (May 20, 2013, 6:25 GMT)

@Albert_cambell: How could Bisla win it if Shakib didn't take KKR to finals?

@joseyesu & : Logic doesn't work all the time. Pune even beat Chennai at Chennai. Chennai might have won some matches outside Chennai when other teams played with their full strength. But it doesn't mean results of all matches that played at Chennai would remain same if other teams were allowed to play at Chennai with their full strength. Sunrisers Hyderabad scored 159 runs against Chennai at Chennai but still lost the match. If Hyderabad was allowed to play with their full strength they could have easily won that match. RCB scored 165 against Chennai at Chennai but still lost. If RCB played with their full strength they could have easily won that match. Chennai wouldn't score 200 against KKR if KKR was allowed to play both Sunil Narine and Senanayaka.(KKR scored 186 in chasing that 200). The results of these 3 matches are enough to put my favourite RCB in and Chennai out of playoffs.

Posted by asadolf on (May 20, 2013, 6:13 GMT)

I was wondered why RR couldnt reach the target of 137 when they faced SRH on the other day. But now i understand that its big strategy to face them in the playoffs instead of facing the fancied RCB team. Even if they won the game on that day they might have finished in the 3r place and might have put them into a situation to face RCB which will be tough task for RR bowlers to restrict Gayle for one more time

Posted by Sandeep_Maddu on (May 20, 2013, 6:12 GMT)

What is being said about Vihari is correct. He should be dropped. He may be a good player but not in this format. Why do we always talk of averages? It is because your last 2 or 3 games' stats may not be a true reflection of the actual ability. If you scored 0,0,0 in your last three innings but your career average is 50+, you are a damn good player. The problem with Vihari is that his IPL career strike rate is 93 which is totally unacceptable. It is not about one or two matches. It is his career strike rate. It is not that the experienced Moody is not aware of this. He analyses each and every player. The only thing in favour of Vihari is that he lends some solidity and sanity into SRH's wobbly batting lineup. Because they lose wickets quickly, Moody might be persisting with Vihari so that he will play a calming and stabilising innings ensuring no further wicket falls. Yes, Vihari can do that because he has got decent temperament. But in the playoffs, you need someone more aggressive.

rohith, karthik, pollard and malinga co waiting for the title....

Posted by Narayan.Shastri on (May 20, 2013, 5:55 GMT)

@ Bhavesh Buch I guess RCB was at its strongest in 2009 (finalists) and 2010 (third-place), with Dale Steyn and Anil Kumble spearheading its bowling attack; Rahul Dravid and Robin Uthappa being their frontline batsmen, apart from Virat Kohli.

I guess RCB owners to be blamed for wrongly releasing such qualityplayers. Chris Gayle is not everything.

Posted by Narayan.Shastri on (May 20, 2013, 5:40 GMT)

Although Hanuma Vihari is a top-order batsman, he will be widely remembered for silencing the Gayle storm in the league phase with his offspin. :)

i knew that this will happen .coz every time when kholi make runs they will never select to final. it is look like when sachin scored a hundred india is loosing. bad luck for RCB. they have the best side but they don't have a good captain. AB will be a good captain. i don't know why they haven't try with him. rohith is doing well to be the next captain of india. good luck to SRH. i really like see that this ipl win by them.

Hyderabad Sunrisers deserved a semifinal spot in IPL6, with some tenacious display in the league matches. RCB has all along been a 3+8 combination, with its bowling devoid of any venom. Unless RCB acquires a lethal bowling attack to complement its batting, it will never win IPL.

Posted by mogs on (May 20, 2013, 5:31 GMT)

@ BD Forever: In that case CSK is the only team to qualify in all past IPL's.. SL players also present in all teams! For past 5 years teams didint play with their full strength? Lol

All Sanga Supporters.. where is the place for Sanga in the team? He never scores quick runs, he never won a single match, he neither keeps the wickets, nor scores consistent runs, He cannot even scored runs on a flat wicket too. he is a test/ ODI batsmen who need at least 15 to 20 balls to start scoring, but in T20 you will not have that much time. White is also not consistent too, but at least he won a match in super over, and couple of big scores with healthy strike rate. He is a good hitter, and also doing good captaincy. Because we don't have any other option, we should wait for our luck, that's it. SRH have come to playoffs without cricket stars. They played as a unit. I am happy with SRH performance this year. Even if they loose to RR in next match I will not become sad. because SRH has come out beyond everyone's imagination. Congratulations to SRH and all the best for the future matches.

@Sandeep Maddu, I agree with your views. RCB with all its superstars and super strikers suffered an ignominious exit....a Viraaaat fall! Orange Cap and Purple caps dont matter, eventually...consistency matters. Ability to win matters. RCB showed it is like its owners....more of show less of substance.

The odds are in favor of CSK this time to win the title. When it comes to limited over no one is more dangerous than Dhoni and Hussey. They regulate the game the way they want.Only two players can stop them from winning it .They are Watson and Steyn.

Apart from Kohli, Gayle, Devillers and Vinay, is anybody got the MOM awards. Whereas in CSK Hussey, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja and in other seasons Vijay, Badri, Ashwin has got the awards.

Why are some saying that KKR had shown no intent and seriousness to win and that is why RCB were out.....RCB had hope for 24 hours only because CSK showed a similar lack of intent. Had CSK played in all seriousness, it would had been curtains for RCB yesterday itself. In a 8 over match, when chasing 107 and you are 2 down and going at slow run rate, required rate over 15....in that stage will Dhoni ever come at no. 5? Had it been a must win game for CSK, Dhoni would have come at 4 or even opened the innings. Maybe Dhoni wanted RCB to be through.....so just stop saying SRH won because KKR were not playing with intent. Take a poll and you will find that RCB is the most hated team all over the country except in Bangalore. Had RCB won the IPL, Kohli would have been given all credit - that he is aggressive, involved, innovative, takes initiative, etc. etc. The same should be the case even if they did not win IPL. So Mr. Kohli please take the entire blame - RCB got knocked off because of you

Congrats SRH, its a much pleased effort from the team and they deserved to be in play-offs, and sorry for the Chris Gayle who brings the team many times single-handedly really caught in wrong team, maybe if he moves to some other team surely that team will touch the glory. RCB bought 7 bowlers in auction but no use. Unless their over-confident and over-aggressive attitude minimized.

@BDForever,, just accept the fact CSK are the No 1 team @ the end of the league.. If you think that CSK got undue advantange by not letting select players players in Chennai then how do you explain this ?? CSK have won the most of away matches in this year's IPL.. in fact they have even win loss record between home and away.. by your logic at least other teams had the option fielding their best 11 on their home grounds which they did..

SRH qualifying with a Net Run Rate of only +0.003 whereas teams ranked 5th and 6th have a much higher NRR. That sums up the way SRH progressed to the Playoffs!

Please SRH management, what is vihari doing in the team. he dropped more than 3 catches in past game. gave a away a 4 this match. he neither bowls or bat. why do you keep him in the team. if they want to win IPL they need to get another indian alrounder or ishant sharma in place of vihari. he's not a future prospect. White's captancy is good, but he need to be consistance or sanga has to come. sanga score atleast 10+ every match. perera need more balls to bat. one good over he cannot hit for sixes atleast 6 overs pererra need to be there. or if one get out early perera has to come in the powerplay.sammy will stabalize the middle. or sammy should come at 3.Kholi dug his own pit. with gayle, AB, Murali and khan real poor captancy. hope one of them join SRH next year. hopefully AB.shame on RCB.+ would like to see malinga n stayn in same attack. how will it be? 48yokers and bouncers <3

Sunrisers deserves to be into the playoffs. Some good team work ensured them this spot. A team who depends on 3 players(RCB) cannot become champions. RCB have to blame themselves for this elimination( RP singhs No ball, Millers dropped catch, Vinaykumars super over against sunrisers, Not playing Murali on turning wickts..etc)

Posted by aletheia on (May 20, 2013, 4:07 GMT)

Looks like a majority of SRH fans are worried about the low strike rate of Vihari. SRH should bring in Ashish Reddy if he is recovered from injury.Other option for SRH is to try RaviTeja, who is an excellent batsman and a great fielder. Ashish Reddy/Ravi Teja/Vihari should come in at 5 down and not 1 down. Samantray should be the 1 down batsman. If SRH can juggle their batting order, they can definitely go for scores beyond 130.All the best

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 4:06 GMT)

Poor Virat! Just as last IPL, DC made RCB exit, now in the name of SRH. Good matured captaincy, but he should discuss with his bowlers, if they were hit for a six and a four consecutively, just as "cool" Dhoni does!! He should learn from Dhoni and take a leaf out of it. Must be aggressive in batting but cool and thinkable in the field when situation goes out of hand / control. He should practise "yoga and meditation" which will keep his mind relaxed and tension free. He has a great future in captaining the Indian side; but who knows, may be Rohit Sharma will be assigned the VC in CT league????

Posted by BDforever on (May 20, 2013, 3:53 GMT)

Congrats Sunrisers Hyderabad...!!! Your team spirit made it in to playoffs. According to my view Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore are the most deserved teams for playoffs. Chennai Super Kings got an unnecessary advantage from the matches they played at Chennai since some players were forced not to play in Chennai. Because of that other teams couldn't play with their full strength so Chennai got the upper hand of those local matches.

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 3:43 GMT)

Its not Kohli who dropped the playoff chance but RP Singh... All he had to do was stick to basics and not bowl a no ball...Kohli atleast compensated with bat...he won games individually .. RP just blew it....

@ProdigyA ...I think celebrations of SRH pain you. You should only know why...every team enjoyed same after their last home win..and moreover this one is special for SRH as they qualified into playoff's. Enjoyement time :)

Virath Kholi is responsible for Royal Challangers losses. He does not know how to get best use of his players. It was evident on field incidents . A very poor captaincy

Vihari, he tried very to hard not win the match, he kills the momentum as he does so often, not a worthy T20 player, hope team management will realize that, go on SRH

League stage has ended. My scorecard: Top 10 Overseas players: Hussey, Gayle, Steyn, Narine, AB, Perera, Johnson, Bravo, Malinga and Finch. Top 10 Indians: Dhoni, Kohli, Dhawan, Bhuvi, Raina, Mishra, Vinay Kumar, Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma. Top Indian future prospects: Binny, Karan Sharma, Samson, Mohit Sharma, Sid Kaul, Sandeep Sharma. Manan Vohra and Vihari promised but not really up there with these. Indians- below expectations: Munaf Patel, Manoj Tiwari, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Sehwag, Yuvraj

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 2:24 GMT)

@siva_bala75 - no one is arguing that vihari isnt a good batsmen but maybe right now he just isnt cut out for t20 format. Look at SRH bat/bowl averages, vihari is striking at 88.88 after 16 matches!! For him to bat that high it isnt worth it & the team needs to realize this and fix it. 240 runs off 270 in 16 matches, that nearly 5 overs he wasted. Give him 100 balls to face & he is only gettin around 90, even a bowlers like steyn/ashish/mishra are hitting better than him. I know SRH havent won any games scoring over 160+ but I believe that everyone should strike at a minimum of 100. In interview last match of RCB kohli said him & gayle would play 5 balls to settle in & go for it. So vihari getting to bat that high without much pressure in most matches(as scores have been low in most matches). He has enough time to play himself in, it shouldnt take 20+ deliveries to settle in. Even last match vs RR, vihari & biplap were batting at same time. But biplap scored faster after settling in.

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 2:24 GMT)

VIHARI - everybody forget his previous matches pl watch them what a batsman is he hope he may play Tests for India. Except CSK all the 3 teams bowling units in the play-off are so strong ( Ofcourse RR is a slow motion unit) that is reason why RCB the second weak bowling unit is out.Gayle ABD n Kholi strong batting unit is not enough to be in the play-off.CSK the weakest bowling unit cannot win the Cup It is time for MI but their Batting???

Congrats to SRH.. they were never expected to make it to playoff during the first month of league matches.. Surely they deserved at the end. They started with good bowling attack and some of good batting as well with the likes of dhawan and sammy and parthiv later.. Their foreign players inconsistent with batting but in bowling steyn has been superb. They are the team now to watch in playoff level..

Any guess who can be at final? Surely tough to answer... lets wait and watch..

SRH were supposed to be out . They made it on their own. No rain, no loss. They won both matches. Congratulations to the under dogs. Nice finish from Sammy.

KKR had a very bad season because they don't have all their players from last year including the worlds best all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan..........

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (May 20, 2013, 1:41 GMT)

Both Delhi and Kolkatta are very slow paced wickets. Sanga should play i/o White. Vihari can give way for Akshath Reddy who can bat at No. 3 and Sanga at No. 4. Vihari is actually not a bad player- but needs strict instructions- not directions. If Vihari plays, he should be given Badrinath role.

Posted by   on (May 20, 2013, 1:01 GMT)

What a nail biting & hair pulling finish, especially that over that sammy played for a maiden I thought the game was lost as perera couldnt put bat on ball either. But biplap and sammy brought the game home & its time for the playoffs now. The team got a great start from parthiv and dhawan but I really think it is time to think about the slot vihari bats at. I think the score was 20 odd required off 30 balls but this guy just wastes a few ball when it was only a run a ball slowing the entire innings up. 240 runs off 270 balls face in 16 matches @ 88.88SR is HORRIBLE. The stats do not lie at all & the team needs to send biplap or sammy at #3 and have vihari bat at 5-7 slot. Because it is last 3 games to win the cup and we need a guy who can atleast hit at 100SR otherwise it will put pressure on other guy batting to get big runs where both batsmen should be looking to hit at 110-120SR. Great job by the team, cant wait to see how they do. GO SRH!!!!!!

Posted by SUNDHUR on (May 20, 2013, 0:01 GMT)

SRH beats SRK to enter the play off! SRH is a team that perfectly gels and brings out their best in crunch time. They have every right to hold the cup!

Posted by Specialservice on (May 19, 2013, 23:37 GMT)

Kudos to Sunrisers! They have proven that team effort is more valuable than big names. Steyn is a master at his art & a true team player, along with Sammy. Patel & Dhawan has blossomed into a very formidable Opening Pair & although the pressure of the game got to them a bit, they pulled through & can be proud, & say without a doubt, that they deserve to be in the Playoffs!!! Great job guys, & continue the good work, don't settle for anything less than the Finals!!!

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 23:28 GMT)

A team with good bowling attack and fragile batting lineup is better than a team with a good batting lineup and fragile bowling attack because Batting saves you matches but Bowling wins you matches . I would prefer SRH to RCB on any day :)

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 23:05 GMT)

The Gaylestorm is over and the "Sun" has come out. It is going to be nice weather for at least a couple of days.

Apparently, Gayle's 175 didn't help RCB much as compared to those singles of Vihari, Samantray and Parthiv.

It was a perfect team work with no batsman with over 300 runs or any bowler with over 20 wickets.

Meanwhile, Kohli will go for a year-long PR training. Gambhir needs some training on how not to display his name on his face but try to smile a bit. Pathan will have to a lot more of clapping as spectators have stopped doing that for him a long time ago.

Posted by mrbaddy on (May 19, 2013, 22:59 GMT)

Out of 10 wins for SRH, 9 man of the matches have gone to Indian players(mishra 4, parthiv 2, vihari 2, dhawan 1 and sammy 1). That's a good fact to know that SRH is winning mainly by Indian players with steyn, perera, sammy playing the key supporting acts. Sanga/white are in such a bad form that they are doing non playing captain roles. I would prefer white to continue as he is handling bowling and fielding changes well with the team at his disposal. (Nothing to take away from sanga's captaincy) And hopefully white get a match winning knock in the play offs.

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 21:21 GMT)

Not taking an iota of credit away from the winner, this all looks pre-programmed to me. One can be virtually rest assured that RR have absolutely no chance to win in the next game, SRH and CSK will make the finals unless Ambani pulls (or has already pulled) some trick out of his bag ! KKR had no chance of qualifying but surely they wanted to win. In such a scenario, hard to imagine Senanayake not getting a game on a spinner's paradise and Bhatia who has played every game since the last 2 seasons being dropped for this one. Whats even more surprising is Pradeep Sangwan with an economy rate of 17 an over given a chance and also opening the bowling !!

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 20:53 GMT)

Congrats To SRH.... Again the bowlers did the job for SRH by restricting KKR to a paltry 140.which has been the case this season at hyderabad..they have maintained this red line of restricting opposition under 130...superb performance.. But please improve the batting standard,it's the business end of the tournament, one match lost and you are knocked out.. . Please get rid of vihari, we are not his enemies,we want the team to win and he is just repeating the same fault everytime.. . Please promote SAMMY to one down, once he settles on the crease,he will make the bowler forget his bowling tactics.. White's batting form is a real concern...he should seriously look into it..

Thanks @crazydiamond for your classic case of sour grapes. Maybe you should pick a team to #support instead of talking another team down. RCB will NOT give a tough fight in the playoffs than SRH. Why? cos they didn't make it there. RCB deserved what it got ... its luck evened out Virat's special innings by RP's special no-ball and the 2 results in the Super-overs. Steyn, Mishra, the Sharmas and Sammy deserve it as much as anyone. Good luck to all the teams that have made it.

@Chandan - It was as much a plot as Gambhir to eliminate RCB as was Kohli's plot to be eliminated by dropping David Miller. Glad to see a bowling dominated team make it in this format.

@Edwin - lot of us simply like SRH for their behavior on the field - and we are kind of turned off by CSK's Bravo's antics too. Looks like SRH & RR got the classy WI players in Sammy & Cooper.

Posted by Nampally on (May 19, 2013, 20:10 GMT)

Great win by the Sun Risers after nearly blowing an easy victory!. It appeared there was a mental blockage of the middle order batting after a splendid opening by Parthiv Patel & Dhawan. From 100 for 1 in 13 overs, it became 111 for 4, 25 balls later. Miller's Run out was Suicidal + wild swings by both Patel & Vihari - Rank bad shots & equally suicidal. What possessed these 3 batsmen? No Cricketer even at School level can show such irresponsible attitude let alone at IPL level where they paid Big Bucks! Anyway thanks to Sammy & Samantray that they got the job done. Firstly it was fine bowling by all five SRH bowlers that allowed them to restricted KKR right on the Redline of 130.Even the fielding was great. Dhawan & Patel showed KKR how to bat on this wkt. before the horror story of irresponsibility. Sammy ended the match in great style by smashing 2 sixers off consecutive balls to put SRH in the playoff. Now SRH need discipline, if they wish to continue their winning Streak.

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 20:07 GMT)

RCB had a head start (HARE) and due to agressive behaviour on field let their boys into over confidence. When u sledge learn it the aussie way. On the other hand SH had slow start (TORTOISE) win-loss-win-loss and steadiely moved to play offs. I would suggest Virat having John Mcenroe as his coach for throwing tantrums. A photograph of todays Virat would be an ideal gift to Gauti. My best wishes to SH on getting a playoffs berth with a team like what KAPILS DEVILS did in 1983. That I have many of my favourite players in all the four teams I wish all of them the very best in their games ahead. May the best team win.

Congrats SRH ! All the best against RR. Please understand that Sammy is someone who can build the innings and not just a pinch hitter.Allow him to come up in the order and score quickly ahead of White and Perera.Other option is send Samantray as one down.Abhishek Purohit has summed up well in saying "Hanuma Vihari, as he has done often in the season, sucked momentum out of the innings" Hope SRH team management is listening !

One sad thing is even though Amit Mishra is such a great spinner MSD will still play R Ashwin(and 3 other CSK teammates) in Indian team(playing 11) in champions trophy.Would love to see Mishra confusing batsmen with googly like the one that got Ten Doschate today.

One real sweet stat for RCB fans .. the team which you look down upon as inferior to your's and the team which u feel doesnt deserve to qualify ..Hyderabad , this is the " second time" they have knocked RCB out of the Playoff race .. remember last year .. when all RCB had to do was to beat Deccan to qualify in their last match.. and they failed to do so chasing 130 odd .. 2 in a row then for Hyderabad .. good going Boyz..

It's coincidence that the bottom placed Delhi has played it's first four HOME matches against the teams that reached play-offs. RR, SRH, CSK won those matches, while MI lost it.

Congrats SRH for the qualification. Although one can argue that KKR were not playing their best team and did not show much intent in their batting but RCB cannot complain because they left their fate to be decided by another team. Disappointed RCB did not qualify but they will do well in coming seasons if they retain the FAB trio of Gayle,Virat,AB and make better bowling choices in the next auction.

Whenever Kholi play an exceptional innings to make it to the playoffs the other team beats them to the playoff (doesn't matter whether he plays for India or RCB). It is like Tendulkar's century bad luck to the team.

Posted by Abitha on (May 19, 2013, 19:34 GMT)

Congrats Sunrisers for the debut entry in Play-off.The team has won 7 home and 3 away wins.Their highest score being 178/3 against MI which they lost Crossed the mark 150 thrice (won 1), 120 to 150 nine times (won 6), 100 to 119 twice (won both) and won against DD by dismissing them for 80. So unless they score 150 or more, their chances of defeating the mighty teams (only with the help of Bowlers ) will be a daunting task. The pitches will be different than the one in Deccan. My advice is drop Vihari and advise White not to try anymore suicidal runs. Well Done. Good Luck Kashinath

Cant say why this win of SRH is not getting down my neck.. Hope it was not a plot by Gambhir to stop RCB from entering the playoffs. However, RCB were clearly not as deserving as SRH are, Cheers to IPL, it's always an entertainment to watch.. And hope to see better in the coming week's matches. And as always CSK are my favorites, so want them to win, but with true game spirits.

Posted by   on (May 19, 2013, 19:29 GMT)

2 teams that deserve the play offs are CSK and SRH. Rightfully they are there. One has topped and most likely win it, as they have always done and played good Cricket in all seasons. SRH played as a team, did the bowling part much better than batting. If their batting clicks they will be a much tougher team to beat. RCB! let this be an eye opener to learn to play the game and maintain the Spirit of the game, MI and RCB are the most hated teams simply because of their behavior. Kohli for RCB and Pollard for MI have talent but need to have PR lessons. Lets enjoy the next few matches and it's going to be a few more super days of Cricket. In between England NZ test was great to watch, white clothes and accurate bowling by England + Lords has it's own flavour

Finally a team that has the perfect bowling attack has got into playoffs of a batting dominated format.Amazed to see the whole SRH squad celebrate their win in front of an awesome crowd. They said 130 was a good score on this pitch but only when you have an bowling attack like SRH else there is no way you can defend low scores like we did.Removing the CSk match SRH are invincible if their bowling keeps clicking this way.Love to see Dale Steyn bowl.As Waqar said he is one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.

I can see Gambhir is smiling at Kohli. I personally did not want either one of these 2 to be in the playoffs because of their attitude on field towards their own players. Dhoni is a easy example to follow, these 2 don't!

Posted by Ahgg on (May 19, 2013, 18:51 GMT)

thank god atleast the writer of this article knows the damage vihari doing by coming in to bat at number 3. He is absolutely clueless and just wastes deliveries and put pressure on other batsmen. I sincerely hope srh will seriously look at number 3 position and make a change now that they are in the play offs. Otherwise I predict an easy win for RR. My suggested line up would be Dhawan, Patel, white, sammy, samantray, Perera , teja, karan, steyn, mishra and ishant. It's very important that srh utilises thier best 4 batsmen upfront in order to take advantage of the first 6 overs and also for them to have time to settle down since they can go big in the end.

I feel very happy for Sunrisers. yet, the way they chocked up in between once again proves that they are the team with the weakest batting line up.If Dhawan, Sami and Perera are taken care o..f, Sunrisers will be at the mercy of the Opposition. If at all they really hope to proceed to final and lift the Trophy..., first and foremost change they must make is send out Hanuman vihari. I really wonder how this ignorant yet adamant chap's name even figures in the best young players of this edition!!! Sanga's absence is painfully felt...!

All of them supported each other.SRH never tried to touch the moon they kept their cool and calm head and came infront match by match. They never said they will be definitely in top 4 exaggerating themselves. But look they slowly and without any huge notice played the best cricket. And now it is rewarded man !!! Really happy that SRH , first time campaigners , in playoffs.RR will have to face a real test on 22 nd.21 st is a easy game.CSK will win .MI need wankahade to win.Like small child need a mother.

Very good lesson to the cricket world as RCB is out. The over aggressiveness of Kohli has no meaning in this sport. Everyone can see him raising fists all over this tournament and while playing for India his emotions calm down. What he got is more enemies at home like he had a tussle with Gambhir for no use. Everyone will see a dip in popularity even here in delhi if he continues to stick to his useless behaviour.

hahahaha... over hyped RCB out of the playoffs. This is good news. Now onto some fun and interesting cricket for the rest of the IPL.

I do doubt KKR not caved in, but rather preconceived this one to be surrendered. this is shame for cricket! bunkum! was there any intent on KKR to accelerate? poor RCB. the GAYLE show is ended for 2014! but in hindsight so much mud slinging between Gambhir , kohly and DHONI is brought bare. you could be kidding if you take out your fast bowlers out of the equation and defend just 15 runs in as many balls. gambhir is so pathetic with his evil and cantankerous attitude. they could not have won this match, but played it like a cricket match. not a revenge match

wat a victory by sunrisers. that victory lap was the best lap has seen in ipl-6. you deserves it. it seems best bowling team steals the place from best batting team(rcb) loved it..........

i am an rcb fan, but I really appreciated this performerance by the sunrisers. If sunrisers beat rr, then this team better win the ipl.Lets just see what happens in the playoffs.

What a match man!!!!! SRH into play-offs!!! superb... Thought they stumbled infront of the victory ,they have grabbed the victory finally. What a disciplined bowling and fielding man!!! I wish SRH good luck in their eliminator match with RR.Delhi pitch will be more or less similar to hyderbada pitch rather than jaipur pitch. So i think the pitch favours SRH than RR.Moreover Mishra ,dale and ishant factor combined with deadly combo of perera and sammy may win the match for SRH.. errr... about RCB......hard luck guys. bye bye....
