The IPL faced new crises - including a hearing for alleged spot-fixers about 10km from the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and a hearing asking for a ban on the event itself - but on the field the same old story of Chennai Super Kings' domination of big IPL matches continued as they made it to their fifth final out of the six IPLs played.

Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina powered them with 80s, but the 192 seemed inadequate the way Dwayne Smith hit 68 off 28. Into the game came Ravindra Jadeja with the wickets of Smith, Dinesh Karthik and Kieron Pollard. Mumbai get another shot at making it to the final when they face the winner of the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.

Super Kings looked a bit hassled in the eight-over slog against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their previous match, but in a full-duration big match you always back them to get back to their best. It was a typical Super Kings performance. It was Hussey and Raina first, who hardly ever disappoint in big matches, with an unbeaten 140-run partnership.

That partnership followed a solid unhurried opening between M Vijay and Hussey. Hussey and Raina then got together as if they have been playing IPL qualifiers on Feroz Shah Kotla tracks all their lives. There were no uncertain prods in the beginning, no hesitation in the running. Hussey, who reclaimed the orange cap during the innings, was special in how he took apart Lasith Malinga.

It was actually a good over from Malinga - the fifth of the match - featuring two excellent yorkers. Hussey not only kept the yorkers out, he pushed two balls of that over for fours. No back lift, just timing. Even when the two exploded towards the end, taking 123 runs off the last 10, it hardly looked like they were taking risks. It seemed the innings was headed towards its natural end.

What followed wasn't quite expected. Smith went absolutely berserk in the chase. Everything he touched seemed to be going for either four or six. He didn't spare the opening bowlers nor Chris Morris. He laid into R Ashwin too and took Mumbai to 86 for 1 in seven overs. Then Dhoni went to what has been his trump card all season.

On came Jadeja and just like that Smith sliced one inexplicably. Gone. Then went Karthik to a skidder: 95 for 3. Rohit Sharma fell under the pressure too, but when Pollard began to hit sixes, the flat track and small outfield promised anything was possible.

Not against Jadeja, though. Two sixes in that over were followed by a dart into the pads, which Pollard happened to flick straight to square leg. That was game over, but Super Kings went on to show brilliant pieces of fielding and celebrations.

Fans complaining about CSK about full stars have to check the archive in iplt20 for season 1 and 2. Vijay, Ashwin, Badri wasn't even heard of and they got a very rookie deals and they just blossomed under CSK management. When Bravo was a failure in MI, CSK took him without any resistance from any other teams, look what he has achieved under the right guidance. Captain of WI for the upcoming champions trophy. They paid the lowest for 2 auctions combined, retained all the players they could, chased after all the players they had before even though they lost Murali when RCB fought with CSK over a bid of > 1 million and Balaji whose price skyrocketted from 50K to 800K to KKR. They paid the highest and got the first player of T20 of all people combined - Mr.M.S.Dhoni. Without it's roaring head a lion is useless and they understood the importance. T'kar would have made difference? Perhaps, with his fielding habits (I'm not saying he's a bad fielder, and hence the term habits) MI perhaps would have been chasing 200+

MI certainly have good enough bowlers to contain CSK, but RS couldn't use them properly. And he must use Johnson/Malinga against Huss even if their quota is getting over. Extract few overs from Smith/Pollard/himself and rotate the bowlers efficiently.

Ha Ha, i read in another forum that CSK has 6 Indian international players while other teams have only 1 or 2, so it is unbalanaced. I understand the desperation of other team supporter. But actual truth is when team was formed CSK had less indian intnls than other only MSD & Raina. CSK created intl player for india Vijay, Ashwin, Badri, Balaji, Jakati, Gony.

To me the main reason for so much success of CSK is because of local TN players in the 11. Badri, Vijay, Aswin, Balaji (b4 KKR). A player will always have a fire within when your playing with you local rivals like banglore, mumbai, to do better, just like how our players play better with pak.

Everybody knows MSD, Morkel, Hussey will perform, but CSK also brought the best out of locals,, and now they are intl players. No other team has so many state locals in the playing 11. if they do, then they will also have many india intl players and be a better team.

Bottom line CSK - Best Captain, coach, team, cricket, fans, spirit

Posted by magicumesh on (May 22, 2013, 11:59 GMT)

Even After 5 finals in 6 editions, all CSK haters are saying MSD is lucky. Luck can hit everyone, but occasionally, not consistently as CSK. Cant understand why they are not ready to accept good consistent entertaining performances? But everyone knows the truth inside their mind and they are not ready to accept in public.Anyway hope every CSK hater and Dhoni Basher will accept the fact next sunday, after the Super Kings lift the Indian Premier League trophy for the third time. Go CSK Go. Consistent Super Kings Rockzzzzzz....

@TheUltimateTruth on (May 22, 2013, 9:49 GMT):The motive of allowing a franchise to have an iconic player was to develop a strong fan base among the teams, which at that instant was only possible with allowing a city based franchise to have a local hero in their team. And the fact of the matter was most of these iconic players were in twilight years of their career, so realistically nothing much was expected from them after the first contractual period of IPL(i.e.2008-2010). Yes, Sehwag and Yuvraj proved to be the biggest disappointments being called as an iconic players. But still, the purpose of having iconic players at the initial years of IPL served it's cause.(e.g. Kolkata fans still support kolkata even without Saurav)

Posted by TheUltimateTruth on (May 22, 2013, 9:58 GMT)

If it is the usual Kolkata pitch, then I feel SRH have the best chance of beating CSK. SRH has the strongest bowling unit, ideal for that pitch. MI might be okay too, but weaker than SRH. RR's spinners are unfortunately busy elsewhere dealing with lawyers.

Posted by TheUltimateTruth on (May 22, 2013, 9:49 GMT)

@SherjiIslam you are technically correct and @Notredam technically wrong, but look at the spirit of his point. All of icon players other than Dhoni are either failures or were released by their original sides because they just didn't fit them. Gambhir and Dravid have found another place and some success. The others have gone dramatically downhill (Sehwag and Yuvraj) or entirely out of the IPL (Laxman and Ganguly). CSK bet on Dhoni and that has worked very well for them -- both as an outstanding captain and as an exceptional player.

Posted by SherjilIslam on (May 22, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

I see most of the CSK fans giving credit to CSK players like Dhoni,Raina,Hussey etc. but no body giving credit to fleming who has been associated with CSK from session 1 and silently doing his bit for the team and still maintains a low profile. I think he deserves all the accolades for making CSK a champion team. I still wonder, what fleming could have done if he had got a slightly better New Zealand team in his playing days.

Posted by TheUltimateTruth on (May 22, 2013, 9:40 GMT)

Johnson swung the ball well and at good pace in his first two overs. CSK was fortunate that Hussey faced pretty much all those balls. He played with soft hands and left a few to preserve his wicket. I don't think Vijay (or for that matter Raina) would have survived. Rohit should have attacked right then with Malinga from the other end instead of Munaf. Someone said something in an earlier post about how Rohit has a brilliant cricketing brain and Dhoni is just lucky. That's just laughable and downright silly. Look at how Dhoni handled Dwayne Smith and Pollard and how Rohit handled Hussey and Raina. Mind you MI has better bowlers than CSK does.

Posted by SherjilIslam on (May 22, 2013, 9:22 GMT)

@ Notredam on (May 22, 2013, 7:47 GMT): Viru is still playing for DD.Get your facts right before posting a rubbish statement.

Posted by Thyagu5432 on (May 22, 2013, 9:12 GMT)

I think playing T20 requires more of mental balance and not just skills. Hussey/Vijay and then Hussey/Raina were going at around 7 RPO in the initial stages. While, as a spectator, I was tense and was wondering what they were doing but there was no such hurry and tension in their approach. They calmly collected their runs and finally did what needs to be done during the later part of the innings and we had 192.

Whereas, MI batsmen were exactly the opposite. Tare panicked looking at the required RPO and holed out. Karthik's dot balls outscored his runs and he tried to innovate and perished. So did Rohit and Rayudu.

I think Dhoni's coolness is contagious and spreads through to all his team members and helps each of them to keep their cool in any situation.

@ Nmiduna Do you remember the first season of IPL? 6 out of 8 franchises had marquee players and they got those players reserved for their teams and not auctioned. No one from chennai complained at that time.... I think the ground is fair to play... But because some temas play poor cricket on the field and pick bad strategies off the field against some good teams doesnt mean that the ground is not fair....

Orange Cap + Purple Cap + Fairplay = Victorious & Inspiring Yellow Cap!

Orange Cap for max runs - Hussey Purple Cap for max wickets - Bravo FairPlay - Dhoni Finalists/Winners - CSK All time max runs - Raina

Though Smith played a blinder, i still feel that he let the team down. Once a batsman gets a start, he should carry it on. Look at the stroke he played off Jadeja, that ball was never meant to be hit. Also, MI is one batsman short and has a long tail that puts pressure on rest of the batsmen. CSK is a class team and will not be surprised if they win this year's IPL.

Get SACHIN in!! He was playing so well. How could MI even think of resting him..he has been their best batsman for last few season..MI lost coz he was not playing.. Of course, these are some the most obvious things to hear after every defeat..time to move on Guyz!!

This seaon CSK have been very consistent from the beginning, albeit a few losses. @Nikemanju - I am not sure if you have visited the STATS page of IPL. In all the seasons, the purple cap/orange cap winners are selected after including stats from play off matches. I think you are just jealous :(

Posted by   on (May 22, 2013, 7:28 GMT)

Eventhough I'm a CSK supporter, I'm little disappointed on how MI lost the match. They had a great start but not captialized well.It was another example how well Dhoni reads the game..! He had no gud bowlers compared with their opponent but still managed to get all their wickets.! Remember?? Dhoni walked to Jadeja after Pollard hit two sixes in that over. Fortunate to have such a great captain in CSK.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (May 22, 2013, 7:16 GMT)

The moment I saw Munaf Patel is in the XI, I knew that CSK has 12 players (11+Munaf) versus MI 10 players (11 less 1). Murali Vijay will close his eyes and score 12 runs an over against Munaf. Thanks to that Munaf over, the pressure was completely off and Hussey could afford to take some time to settle down. Also, Ojha can't bowl well to left handers and CSK has tones of them. One positive for MI is Bhajji's bowling. I am a huge fan of Ashwin but should admit that Bhajji has outsmarted him this season.

Posted by   on (May 22, 2013, 7:00 GMT)

Go with Seven batsman, It is simple as the results saw by Mumbai in chasing. Pollard is big hitter but don't have class. You must have one batsman extra to avoid quick rip-off of big tail. Smith can bowl overs of Patel. Match somehow look preset because no specialist bowler of mumbai took a single wicket.

At present there is no "Battle of Equals" to CSK. Eventually Pune warriors is withdrawn from IPL7. The only formidable team for IPL7 to compete CSK is CSK-2 from Reserve Bench Strength. My CSK-2 team is as follows. Aniruth Srikanth, W.Saha, H.Duplesis, Baba Aparajith, Jahathi, Nuvan Kulasekara, D.Nannes, Hilfenhas, Ankit Rajput, and 2 others.

Posted by Otuwa on (May 22, 2013, 6:34 GMT)

After Smith's dismsisal Pollard was the right guy to come to the crease. But Rohit came to the crease. It's put lot of pressure on Karthik's shoulders and Finaly both of them dismissed.

Posted by rsurya on (May 22, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

8 over 86 runs, you can't get a better start than this, If you can't capitalize on this your team has some real problems. the Batting collapse of Mumbai was seen in last few matches and its always that pollard's wicket ends the story. Dinesh Karthik after he was selected for the Champions Trophy has never show intent as he shown in the begining of the tournament. Too much of dot balls to stop the momentum is the problem for Mumbai, they never rotate the strike to get settled. And Malinga should bowl only yorkers he is not good at bowling any other deliveries, his bad run this season is bcoz he tries various deliveries which batsman score easily and heavily. Munaf shd be replaced by surya kumar yadav. And at last Johnson should bowl his 1st over 1st ball correctly, he always starts with a leg side fulltoss.

Nice to see all the CSK bashers looking kind of silly now. God, it must be hard for some to accept what a fantastic team they are! It is almost like the rest of India is against CSK! Hilarious, considering CSK supplies fifty percent of the Indian team. How does it surprise ANYONE that CSK is doing so well? Why would anybody give excuses for excellence? Showing up in five out of six finals in a young tournament is something quite remarkable. When it really matters, CSK rarely falters. Simple fact of the matter. No dependence on stars, but anybody is a star when it really counts. Such is the quality of this side, that people who make excuses for their team losing to CSK must simply understand that no matter what you do, you cannot win without consistency. CSK are in a league of their own, really.

sachin_is_awesome , I must admit those are very airy -fairy comments you make.Lets not forget the history because thats a clear indication of what's to come in the future.CSK have proved to be the most dangerous side from playoff stages and this innings reaffirms that. Its also a pity you seem to lack the basics knowledge of cricketing strategies.CSK'S strategy was to put every bowler under the pump & they succeded pretty well. This puts the bowlers on the back foot & your best bowlers struggle with confidence and naturally you will get plenty of freebies when the bowler is in this state of mind.MI batters failed to do this simply because the target was much to huge, resulting in them panicking & loosing wickets regularly.DS did a fantastic job since he was not in panic mode. You must understand that when one is batting as well as he did and gets out, the batsmen to follow are under pressure to perform as well as him for the team to ever have a to win.Wistle Podu , CSK IPL 6 winners

Posted by ladycricfan on (May 22, 2013, 6:01 GMT)

It was an easy wicket to bat on. The ball was coming onto the bat nicely. The spinners fared better. Bhaji for MI and Sir J for CSK. It was the captaincy which was the most telling. Rohit was grumpy in the field. Even during smith's onslaught Dhoni looked calm, plotting his downfall. Eden gardens is a low scorer. MI will be out for revenge. The pitch is similar Hyderabad and SRH will fancy their chances. RR might play Badree for the first time. All the best to all four teams.

Posted by aswin05 on (May 22, 2013, 5:49 GMT)

@ sarangsrk I agree that it is Dhoni who makes the mediocre bowling unit look awesome. But its not his luck. Luck doesnt get you back always... You just need to vahe some common sense to accept that if a particular phenomenon happens time and again, it has something to do with more than luck. i.e Dhoni's intelligence in this case....

Let Ponting the lead the the team and use his experience to bounce back

Posted by Thyagu5432 on (May 22, 2013, 5:19 GMT)

That was a typical CSK eshtyle win. Win the toss, score tons, tighten the screws on MI. When you score 190+ you are never out of the game even when Smith was sending the ball all over. When he finally got out, the required rate was still around 9 mark, that is what makes it so difficult for the opponents.

If I were the adjudicator, I would have given Men of the Match rather than Man of the Match. While Hussey's presence gave CSK the comfort feeling, Raina's presence gave MI the discomfort feeling and Jadeja's bowling gave the final nail that the MI coffin needed. The way Jadeja got Smith and Pollard out were brilliant. It was clear these guys like the ball under their bat (and that is where Ashwin was feeding them). Jadeja bowled a faster one wide of the off stump to get Smith edging one and then, after Pollard hit 2 sixes, he bowled a faster one outside the off stump followed it up with another faster on his legs and that got Pollard to flick straight to Hussey. Brilliant!

Mumbai should make a good playing XI for next match

In My point of view the team for next match should be....

Aditya Tare, A.Ryaudu, Tendulkar, D.kartik, R.sharma, D.smith, K.Pollard, Harbhajhan, Jhonson, , Malinga, ojha....

And D.smith, Pollard should be a fifth bowler....

Its true that csk is the best team but they can easily be beaten if u cud sketch their batsmen like..

Let these bowlers deliver max balls to these batsmen

HUssey - Harbajan Vijay - JOhnson Raina - Malinga Bravo - Malinga\Harbajan Dhoni - Malinga\Johnson Jadeja - Malinga\Johnson Albie - Rohit\Sachin\Kulkarni\Malinga\JOhnson Badrinath - No idea..

Yes Malinga has only 4 overs but hes at his best atleast for a game.. MI cud pull it out with this effort

I want mumbai Indians to buy an Indian Fast bowler because Munaf patel is not performing well and there is no support fro malinga and Jhonson. Mumbai has no third bowler and Mumabi Also should buy one opening batsman and Middle order batsman. In my point of view mumbai should buy Bhuvanesh kumar and Yuvarj singh

Posted by kapilesh23 on (May 22, 2013, 5:02 GMT)

That is why Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Kartik and countless others who are awaiting there chances in Team India can never come close to Virat Kohli. Kohli takes up the responsibility in chase and make sure he finishes it with aplomb. In yesterdays match it was pressure who was bogging down both Kartik and Sharma and it was clearly visible on their faces. I supported Kartik and Sharma because MI is my team but I have realized now that no team whether India or Ipl's can bank upon players like these.

Well Mumbai Captain .. please listen

CSK will beat MI again if u go with the same team.. cox anyway ur bowlers are gonna be smashed ..thats for sure..

as they play spinners very well..please make three changes 2 bowlers out and 1 batsman and a bowler in

Let Ohja and munaf go out

And Let Kulkarni and Sachin come in ..

Sachin and Smith Opens followed by others ...

Sachin Smith Tare karthik Rohit Pollard Rayadu

BUt for match against RR/SRH try Rayadu as 1st or 2nd down

PLease make Harbajan bowl to Hussey and no spinners for raina.. But this team shud be only against CSK ..not against RR or SRH

I hope MI lifts trophy if u play with this team....

Opportunities for MI to learn how to respect the opponents.

@Karthickvat Ananth - loved your comment brother regarding MI v CSK as India v Pak....being a hardcore Mumbaikar i always knew that MI wont stand chance against CSK specially in play-off....the way MI lost the 2010 final to CSK after winning 12 in 15 games speaks about ability of MI in playoffs.....with Dhoni at the helm at CSK with Raina & allrounders in Bravo,Morkel,Jadeja & batters like Hussey & Badrinath in their ranks with Ashwin makes CSK tough to beat...last year too MI defeated CSK in both league games but couldnt win in eliminator...but being a MI fan i hope they go through the final & for once prove me & other MI fans wrong !

Mumbai Chasing..

over 14.1- Jadeja to Pollard - Length Ball - SIX! 14.2- Jadeja to Pollard - Length Ball - SIX!

Dhoni talks to Jaddu, 14.3 Jadeja to Pollard - Full Ball near wide line - Single 14.5 Jadeja to Pollard - Full ball on the pads - Out Caught!!

Some lessons for future and other captains?? #Pontingesque

sachin_is_awesome- learn to be graceful.CSK sent your prime bowlers to coolers and that's it! you have high hopes ! when it comes to Knocks or Pressure games MI chicken out like the South-Africans. they don't have any big match temperament! The have proved it once again! You guys always try to dish out reasons for your lousy performance- please learn to grow up!

Posted by sarangsrk on (May 22, 2013, 4:16 GMT)

@Velayudham Akshay..absolutely agree and MI losing all wickets was not a credit to CSK's bowling. It was the run rate pressure and knockout game where you don't need to think about wickets, just think about winning. Dhoni and his luck makes this ordinary attack look better. I hope CSK lose the toss in Kolkata and then we will see how much their bowlers can do on a low and slow wicket.

Posted by   on (May 22, 2013, 4:11 GMT)

CSK comes good again no dobt..just tht MI started like they will finish match in 15 overs..but once u set n u throwing bat on everything..wrong selection n sloppy fielding..n gud bowlers gng for too much runs..specially the last over by mallinga...n faliure of karthik n rohit...on crucial occasion again..leaving for pollard only as he is a pink chitter..who can hit 4-5 balls but a small mistake makes him out..predictable match i can say......the way things happens frm ball 1 wen Csk started batting.. hats off to MIke hussey n Raina...all guns blazing at the right tym...i will love to se SRH in finals..rather than MI....

Posted by Vivekaks on (May 22, 2013, 4:09 GMT)

Pack all the superstars you can...they are bound to fail one day...they cannot perform all the time...for the reliance on them is a lot...MI keeps getting these rude shocks time and again...

Chennai, though has stars but not as big as MI. Hussey is not a star, a performer... Raina is not a star, but a match-winner..players like jadeja, badri and bravo will never be in the wishlist of a franchise...but look at how they perform... The Indian talent in CSK ranks has time and again ensured they are a champion side. no other team in IPL can boast of such an abundance of Indian talent... ...Dhoni is probably the only star in CSK line up...and he is probably the only star in IPL, who performs most consistently...

Chennai is becoming the Man Utd of IPL...it will take some performance to beat its record of 5 finals and one semi final.

Posted by   on (May 22, 2013, 3:55 GMT)

Experiencing all these victories with the present team is developing a kind of fear inside me as next year is an auction year of IPL.. I stand by Flemings' comment that shuffling players so periodically must be restricted as it doesn't allow them to be glued together to call as a team... To put it well, I don't want to see Raina or Jadeja or any other CSKian to play for a different team!! :(

Conviction, Consistency and Commitment is the Mantra for CSK. MI had good bowling unit when compared with CSK but the batting they don't have a man like Hussy and Dhoni who can play the situational game. Playoff of MI vs CSK can be compared to the India Vs Pakistan matches in world cup. India has lost so many matches with Pakistan but when it comes to world cup it will be India. In the same way CSK has lost both the league matches to MI but they have never lost on a play off they played for 3 times. CSK yet another final and hope they finish in a good note.

Posted by ODI_BestFormOfCricket on (May 22, 2013, 3:16 GMT)

CSK made that total without having any risks, they ended the way they had started in the 11th over. They played sensibly just looking for pure placements, timings. As dhoni said i too feel csk short atleast 10 runs, if they had dhoni in place of hussey they might scored what he thought. Anyway, hussey constructs and finished the way he has been doing since the start of the tournament. Raina, this man never failed on big stage and he proved once again. My favourite is, johnson's that short of length ball outside off GONE BIG. Still, CSK lacks penetrating bowler that clearly exposed by smith. Morkel actually lucky, many of his FullMiddleLeg line balls was not connected by smith. And on spin department, ashwin 's performance going backwards in last few games. BEWARE CSK. BEST LUCK.

@Mohan Ragavan - They're right. CSK bowling is mediocre.. But because of MSD, how he shuffles his bowlers depending on situations, makes the bowling unit looks somewhat strong....

CSK - Delighful batting + outstanding fielding + manageable bowling + excellent captaincy + team loyalty + Musical performance under pressure + and so on and so forth......all the best CSK

Chennai is good at batting but Mumbai in bowling in this IPL. Chennai did great at their job when Mumbai was totally messed up at their strength. both Mitchell and Malinga were in poor form...I didn't see anything from Malinga except yorkers that's also went for sixes this time...funny part that poorly selected Munaf Patel also joint the expensive party with them

Posted by MohanRagavan on (May 22, 2013, 3:01 GMT)

For all those MI fans who said MI has best bowling unit. they took only 1 wicket...they also said CSK has medicore bowling but they got 10 wicket ....it makes really laugh...........

Posted by AshG77 on (May 22, 2013, 2:14 GMT)

It was a good 20-20 game which was very matured. CSK is an excellent team with mature players. MI lacks maturity and relies on heroism. I believe RCB is much more talented and deserving team. As for Mr. Tendulkar - Please stop embarrassing yourself and stay away from this format of the game.

Posted by   on (May 22, 2013, 0:15 GMT)

CSK will just keep on winning because they are the only team that bowl straight and on a good length. They make batting difficult. Most of the other teams have no discipline in bowling and they usually have to score high to win. I hope they loose in the final for a change.

Well, CSK are like the Yankees of Cricket. You love 'em or hate 'em. Judging from their play, they are a machine! Go CSK! All the best in the finals

One thing I felt before the match which now seems like an afterthought was Ponting should have played the match as the caption but not as batsman. RS vs MSD its always going one way. Ponting been in these situations before of course with a much stronger Aus team but he could have handled the situation better than RS, who was pathetic showing his frustration visible when they perform badly. No matter where Ponting bats at which position even at No.8, MI should field Ponting as caption. I never thought I would say these nice words for Ponting when he was playing for Aus. How much things change with IPL and T20.

The king of IPLs was best predicted by Chennai Super kings franchise more than half a decade ago - Resembled by their logo "The Roaring Lion - The king of Jungles". All the very best to Chennai Super Kings to sweep all categories of individual (Orange and Purple cap) and team performance awards (IPL Championship and Fair Play) in this season of IPL

Posted by SUNDHUR on (May 21, 2013, 22:53 GMT)

CSK has proved yet another time they are the best of the game, reaching the final 5 times in 6 seasons and reserving their best for the play off! It was a totally dominating performance with the bat and the ball to defeat MI who had in fact won on the two previous league encounters. Great batting, bowling, fielding and team work and above all great captaincy by MSD, the "Whistle Podu" hero! Not only the orange and purple caps, the IPL Season 6 cup may also be their way soon! I still wish Rahul Dravid and his men make it to the final, though it will also be welcome if SRH makes it to the final as they have been impressive as a team!

Posted by Provost on (May 21, 2013, 21:20 GMT)

CSK- Mediocre bowling, batting, fielding but MI/RCB got great stars .........guess what...It is better to have 10 Soldiers with one Commander than having 10 Commanders and may be one one Soldier (Smith in this game).......Too many super stars will be just shooting star........Feed the lion, please......

This is the mark of a great team. MI may have beaten CSK home and away in the league games but when it comes to the big games, CSK are a different beast. Hussey's greatness is etched in history and Raina is the most prolific IPL batsman. And then, there is that man, Dhoni. What a skipper he is. Terrific inspiration for his team-mates.

Posted by dork29 on (May 21, 2013, 20:38 GMT)

MI were outbatted, outfielded and outbowled. It was a pleasure to see the cocky men in blue get smashed. 192 for 1, bye bye Johnson, Malimga et al.It was one brilliant piece of capatiancy from MSD which won the day for CSK. I am not sure why it was not mentioned; but when he got tonked for two sixes, MSD ran upto Jaddu and said something. The next tnig you know, cocky Kieron is plodding back to the pavilion. Against SRH, he did all that damage because repeatedly Perera was picthing the ball where Pollard likes it the most - and the same with Amit mishra. Cameron White is no Dhoni. The latter never loses his focus. he is always busy plotting the downfall of the batsmen, irrespective how badly his bowlers are getting pummelled. That is what makes him an extremely dangerous opponent. CSK is and always will be the best 20/20 team. CSK, YOU ROCK!!!!

Posted by   on (May 21, 2013, 20:31 GMT)

MI had over expectation from their fast blowers after they beat CSK at Mumbai but can't resist real situation...If you watched all league matches mostly Mitchell Johnson was an expensive and Malinga was just only a wicket taker of low order batsmen but, Chennai has a long batting order for long time.Badrinath only had chance to bat few matches but he was always in batting line up for Chennai.

MI bowlers just did not show up for this game . Nice to see SMITH back with a "bang" after being put on the bench for 2 games .

Other than the match Gotta say BCCI should telecast IPL on ESPN!

coz the Commentary and Camera work has been real disappointing this season?

A lot of times when the batsman hits the ball for a six the camera's focus is somewhere else?

And SANJAY MANJREKAR & RAVI SHASTRI have been doing a real boring and annoying commentary! Even today SANJAY kept talking about DHONI's facial expressions and reactions rather than the match? lol

Though Alan Wilkins,Ramiz and Sunil Gavaskar have been pretty fine!

Posted by catsalive on (May 21, 2013, 20:19 GMT)

Tamil nattu manmadan does it again!!! Hats off to Dhoni and his team and the support staff for taking CSK to the 5th Final. MI all the best for the next match.

Horrific performance form rohit sharma and dinesh karthik. Those completely destroyed all the momentum smith had given them. Happened last year in the eliminator against CSk, smith got them off to a good start but rohit choked and got 14 off 19. I am positive these two teams will meet in the final. Sachin must come in place of Rayudu, what a shocker he is. Team should go 1.Smith 2.Sachin 3.Tare(very aggressive, looks in good nick) 4.Karthik 5.Rohit 6.Pollard 7.Bhajji 8.Johnson 9.Malinga 10.Dhawan/Kulkarni(preferred choice) 11.Ohja. Mumbai are very good at Kolkata and will sum up the conditions when playing qualifier 2. Mumbai will win IPL 2013

No real spirit to win today by MI after the wicket of Smith. Same times, CSK worked hard to get this victory, it doesn't come their way by luck! CSK deserves as they know for their team effort and consistency. I guess RR has a bright chance to change the momentum and make the final.

Posted by ladycricfan on (May 21, 2013, 19:49 GMT)

That was awesome from CSK. Congratulations for reaching yet another finals. Hussey and Raina were superb. When smith was going berserk it looked like MI was going to win easily. But captain cool had other ideas.

Table toppers, Fair play award toppers, Orange Cap, Purple Cap and hopefully the championship

Posted by mohamedtoufiq on (May 21, 2013, 19:39 GMT)

A big choke!...again! Expected better performance from MI. Certainly MI don't apply good thinking to the game and that is what lets them down every season. Good CSK show as usual. It will be hard for MI to compete against the team winning the Eliminator as they will be coming with high spirits compared to MI, who are currently in a two match losing/choking streak. If Ponting comes into the side now, then they will have a good advantage. But whoever comes to the final, CSK will always have the better conditioned side and with Fleming as their coach, they are the real champion team and the odds of another IPL triumph is very high in their favour.

Do u know the difference between CsK and other teams, csk has only one decision maker thats their captian, others are jus advisers the final say is of the captian this was said by their coach, also u rarely find the owners sitting on gaudy huge sofas and cheering the team, they operate with surgical precision with professional experinced crickters guiding, advising the capian and team, single minded devotion and focus .........WE HAVE TO WIN THIS GAME.

Posted by Abitha on (May 21, 2013, 19:27 GMT)

Well done CSK. Cometh the hour cometh the MEN. Raina played the best innings. No words to describe "Mr.Cricket". Hats off to both. The team converted half chances to wickets. What to say about the catch Raina and Bravo took.Team work pays. Good Luck CSK IN THE FINALS Even after Smith batted brilliantly others fell by the wayside. Hope MI will regroup and find their feet in the next match by dropping Munaf

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (May 21, 2013, 19:26 GMT)

@ Nampally Agree 100% " Sharma & Karthik squandered Smith's magnificent effort." - both those guys always crumble under pressure the only batsman that have won M.I games under pressure chasing are Pollard and SMith. Today when Smith fell after that incredible innings M.I should have put Pollard straight in to try and continue that momentum whilst the ball was still hard and before the spinners came into the equation with the RRR over 14 !

Posted by   on (May 21, 2013, 19:19 GMT)

Suresh Raina's strike rate in knock-out games is 171.6. Scoring 440 runs from 10 games with 5 half centuries. The guy really performs well under pressure

So Chennai keeping the record of playing every IPL final to happen on Indian soil intact"

Posted by philipsmgp on (May 21, 2013, 19:14 GMT)

All CXSK haters just try to understand tha fact CSK is not one game player. It is a team unit. They dont care winning or losing as long as they are playing fair and good cricket. That is what they have been on the top. Moreover a captain should earn to be respected by bis team which CSK did.You Could see other Indian captains vohli and rohit(EVEN IN TODAYS MATCH) whre he was showin his frustration on his bowler at the same time even when smith was blasting CSK bowlers Dhoni was Calm. That is what the difference Dhoni.Accept it.

Great victory by CSK...just showing MI how to handle play offs....But bit disappointed the way the MI captain had played negative tactics with the ball...they dont deserve a place in the final! Great victory by CSK against MI and mean cricket from mumbei!

From IPL 7 , like Tennis before open era, CSK should be allowed to play the finals directly and all other teams should compete with each other to decide the finalists to take on CSK. Well done CSK, the along with orange and purple cap, Championship Cup will also be yours.

Posted by RoyalGladiator on (May 21, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

A very interesting trivia : since the first season of IPL, whenever CSK has reached the finals with RCB in top four, they have won the final. but whenever they have reached finals, with RCB not qualifying for the play offs, they have lost the match (final). this time again, CSK is in the finals, but without RCB qualifying for the playoffs.... would be interesting to see if the history continues....

Posted by starincricket on (May 21, 2013, 19:09 GMT)

Great batting performance from Hussey and Raina.. And smith too.. he looked too dangerous.. but no one played after that.. they could have made it closer atleast which also denied by CSK's great fielding performance today!

Whoever wins 2nd qualifier , will be having an advantage as the same Kolkata ground for Finals.. But again its on the day performance who ll play better cricket. CSKs are better aware of playoff's and Final situation. They are known to perform well when it really matters..And Dhoni knows better of indian condtions as well So it ll not be easy to beat them on Final.

Will CSK regain on Final, from reading on last year Final? Will have to wait and watch!

It ll be really exciting to see who ll be on other Finalist!!! MI? RR? why not SRH?

CSK is the best! Orange Cap, Purple Cap, Place in the final for the 5th time, Fair Play Award for the 4th time - what a team!

Those MI fans who like to think that MI gave it away - look back - it is the fantastic catching that made the difference at the end of the game. CSK is known to raise their game in big games - and MI is just the contrast; their best 'go-to' bowler Malinga, invariably can't get it right on D day. Bizarre team selection for such a critical match!!!

Posted by rajcan on (May 21, 2013, 18:53 GMT)

The last game just before the play off, CSK could have won if Murali Vijay was not batting and eating up the overs.

Today's game also he batted barely over 100 strike rate. When CSK has very strong batting line up, persisting with Murali as an opener and wasting power play overs might cause them in the final.

Posted by Trakkan on (May 21, 2013, 18:44 GMT)

@sachin_is_awesome, today MI were great in first 8 overs so it is a middle order collapse rather than anything to do with Sachin presence. MI are missing Wankhade, its crowd and chasing also does not help them. Making too may changes in play off means they have not got their playing 11 right even after 16 matches which is bizzare. There is no reason to bring Munaf when he was not even given chance to play in Dharmasala where they gave chance to local himachal player Rishid Dhawan.

They team playing 2nd qualifier may get accustomed to conditions but they have always lost due to fatigue so it is not an advantage.

Posted by Nampally on (May 21, 2013, 18:44 GMT)

CSK coasted to an easy victory over MI. Much fancied MI bowling was anything but "friendly". In fact Raina & Hussey had a 140 run partnership at a S/R of nearly 200!. Pollard got the only consolation wkt. After setting a huge target of 193, CSK bowlers were put to test by Smith with a great innings of 68 @ a S/R of >200. However Rohit Sharma & Karthik squandered Smith's magnificient effort. Only Pollard tried to revive the batting with 2 sixers off successive balls of Jadeja. It brought back memories of his great one Man effort to beat SRH in a recent match with similar S/R challenge. But Jadeja had the last laugh when Hussey made a brilliant catch at short square leg to send Pollard back. That was the end of the MI batting. Both Jadeja & Bravo bowled v.well- especially Bravo with 3 for 9 off 3 overs!. MI, away from their home turf, were outplayed in all departments of the game. MI were short of at least one good all rounder like Maxwell. Congrats CSK to advance to Finals as #1 Team!

Take that MI supporters who were so confident and kept boasting that MI will trash CSK. Well look what happened - CSK slaughtered MI completely in every single department - in batting, fielding, balling, captaincy and team work. CSK talks the talk and walks the walk.

WOW Dwayne Smith was phenomenal yet again today, he has been M.I's most important player this yr imo after Pondulkars failure he secured 2 back to Half century MOM winnings innings without M.i would have failed to qualify and he has been awesome in the field. Today again he looked like he could help bring M.I home v this towering total but the experienced Indians Karthik an Rohit failed to deliver under pressure. Whoever makes the final is going to have to play out their skin to defeat this CSK side I think I'm going to back the underdogs SRH !

Posted by philipsmgp on (May 21, 2013, 18:29 GMT)

It was very cheap cricket from MI when they were bouncing the ball on return throw to the bowler or Wicket keeper so that the ball could get more softer and harder for CSK to score but CSK managed to score a huge total. But CSK didnt do what MI did but even then MI was not able to reach the title.Hmmmm honest team wins.

Chennai proved that It may have been a game of equals had it been a league match.... but for match as big as play offs , it is a king and opposition is merely a team to participate on field, not to compete....

Dear CSK bashers, it is time for you to relish the moment. Ordinary team like CSK with bits and pieces of players, with no good bowling attacked, hyped batsmen are in finals for only 5th time in 6 IPLs. MI as usual showed how great they are in play offs. They are the best team as their team consists of great batsmen, superb bowlers.

I read in Cricinfo in morning when rohit said we are here on a mission.I thought he just carried away with the vicotories over CSK in the league games. may be he was just trying to play mind games over CSK with ponting's assistance. What he forgot is he is playing against CSK who are big game players. And even cricinfo published MI has better batting line up than CSK. I did not understand how they could say that when harbhajan is your 7th batsman.Apart from Rohit and karthik they didnt have a proper batting line up though they had occassional match players like Smith and pollard.

Posted by ddr3 on (May 21, 2013, 18:20 GMT)

and as i said POLLARD is good to play from 14th over...they should have promoted Raydu ahead today! Raydu needs time to settle in!

RAYDU was so good from IPL-1 to IPL-4 but MI team-management have just messed things up for him by not giving him time to play!

Quite unfortunate!

Posted by InnocentGuy on (May 21, 2013, 18:18 GMT)

If RR win and defeat MI also, then IPL will have come a full circle - CSK vs RR finals in IPL1. And CSK should beat RR and then we can all forget about IPL forever!

Last year Bravo has the best batting average 46.37 & best batting strike rate 140.53 (371 runs) among all CSK batsmen AND this year he has the best bowling average 16.25 & best bowling strike rate 12.5 (28 wickets) among all CSK bowlers.

Another clinical performance from CSK. There is no denying the greatness of this team. Teams like KKR come and go, but my goodness the consistency of this team is unbelievable. It is true of what they say, IPL is CSK vs the other teams.

Posted by Travis_Bickle on (May 21, 2013, 18:04 GMT)

Very much disappointed with Mumbai Indian's effort. Smith was going great. All the Indian batsman were very poor and horrible shot selection. Next match Sachin should come in place of Rayudu and Rishi Dhawan for Munaf. The problem for Mumbai since the inception of IPL is to find a pair of openers. They are still experimenting with opening slot. If they had played sensible cricket they should won this match. But it is not always about talent it is more about applying it properly.

hmm... for all those ppl who boasted of MI bowling..... guess you ppl should change your opinion.I am not a supporter of CSK but its a disappointemnt to watch MI batting line up getting crumbled bcoz of the so called 'mediocre' bowling of CSK.... Looks like MI should revamp their game plan for atleast the qualifier 2..

Posted by   on (May 21, 2013, 18:01 GMT)

Great Job CSK. I believe that there will be lot of emails from the fellow MI supporters giving some lame excuses. Fittingly they are not ready to accept the talent and strength of CSK. Only one Team in the IPL in all editions qualify for play off and 5 out of 6 qualified for Final. Its because of consistency and handling the pressure very well. Once gain proud to be a CSk ian.

Posted by CSreekumar on (May 21, 2013, 17:53 GMT)

MI seems over confident whereas CSK done the home work pretty decently. Toss is another factor that boosted CSk's chances. MI doesn't seems to have Plan B, whereas CSK has always. From Smith to Pollard, they executed their plans perfectly. Come on MI, beat RR/SRH and win the crown....
