That is the unique thing about Calcutta. People whether born there or who went there and stayed for sometime there, they all have this 'ready to pick a fight' to defend good old Calcutta attitude.Bengali or anyone else that loyalty is hard to believe and understand. And it is quite fierce really. So much so that even after a short stay there one picks up this strong sense of bonding. I well appreciate what Gautam means. He could never have this kind of loyalty in Delhi. There people are different. Their concern is probably more about the present and its pleasures. Even those who have common roots mostly in undivided Pakistan seldom get together just for that reason. It is their present that draws them maybe because they are secure in the knowledge that the partition was long ago. They are comfortable with that feeling. In Cal they are proud of their heritage and class as being distinct from anywhere else. And so you criticise Calcutta at your peril.A great part of the world actually.
