Indian Premier League - 22nd match

Pune Warriors v Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 11 runs

Parthiv and de Kock at the crease. Bhuvneshwar Kumar with the ball.

3.59 pm

Speaking of showtime, yep, we're only a minute away from it! Brace yourself...

3.55 pm

Avishek: "Its showtime...Hope to see "Steverse" (Steve & the reverse) again.."

Monish: "Where is Marlon Samuels?" Still injured I am assuming.

Manjunatha: "is Yuvi playing today???? waiting to see dhawan playing for SRH so that their batting become stronger...." Neither are playing, no Yuvi, no Dhawan. Unfortunately, if I may add.

BB Samantray in for DB Ravi Teja, that's the other change to the Hyderabad side.

Arjit: "Team please. I need to lock my fantasy team and go to sleep. I have two exams tomorrow."

Will be updated above, keep a lookout!

Sundar: "Why are Sunrisers not playing Darren Saamy?? i would have gone in with him ahead of De Kock ,given his all round abilities" He probably only just landed in India. Might need some time.

Ravi: "Sree - what i think is the general sentiment around spinners is that if they dont have any mystery around them then they are not quality spinners. I fully support your comment, i regard him a quality spinner and he is in my fantasy league team :)" I wonder whether some of these cricketers have their own fantasy teams.

Prabhu: "Sanga, truly world class... and a Team man !!!!!.. shud Angello also do the same !!!!?" Or at least hope that Mathews to start getting some runs. Or wickets.

3.30 pm, Toss White calls tails, it lands head and Angelo wants Pune to bowl.

Both captains not sure how the pitch is going to behave, that's probably why both wanted to field first. Mathews called it a bit of an up and down track.

Angelo Mathews is back as the Pune captain. Ross Taylor misses out. And yep, Kumar Sangakkara is not out there either, Cameron White comes in as a skipper and Quinton de Kock will be making his IPL debut. They do read up Cricinfo comments!

3.25 pm

Adnan: "I wonder why dinda features in every match? Is the pace is the only thing for selection in a cricket team?"

My sense is that he provides some experience to the bowling attack in the absence of any overseas pace bowler. To get in Parnell or Richardson, they will have to give up on their foreign batsmen or all-rounders. Another poor game or two for Dinda, they may have to do that too.

Shri: "@Abheeshu.. Seriously?? No Quality Spinner in Pune?? Rahul Sharma: Econ under 7, Int Strike rate 14.6"

Mafaz: "Hold on guys. Sanga has lost only 2 games. 11 more games to go. Just hang on. Sanga is world class." I think the point that was being made was also to do with his batting. Needs to get a big one.

3.20 pm

And a lot of support for de Kock.

Abheeshu: "de Kock in for Sangakara because Pune have got no quality spinner and no quality fast bowler"

Shariq: "Its time Sangakkara made way for Quinton and White for Sammy, else it might be too late into the competition with Sunrisers yet to play the home and away games with giants like MI and CSK yet."

...and for DB Ravi Teja too.

Haider: "sanga should have replace patel behind the stump. and ravi teja comes in place of patel in the team"

IPL has followers in Nepal and here's one of them. ravindra: "IPL is a bette way to learn cricket for Nepalese Player..althoug we are close neighbour bt far behind India in cricket..hope to see nepalese players in IPL"

3.10 pm

junaid anwar: "IC Pandey and Parvez rasool should be included.both are better batsman too, infact Ishwar pandey is in the mould of Ravi Rampal."

I was surprised that Rasool didn't start off from the first game. I had even selected him in my fantasy team but lost out on a sub getting him out!

Xolile: "Parthiv is statistically the worst batsman in the entire competition. It is time for him to make way for De Kock, who statitically is second only to Chris Gayle. Crazy selection politics in Indian cricket..." And he will replace which foreign player...?

Hello and welcome to the 22nd game of the Indian Premier League 2013. Pune Warriors host the Sunrisers Hyderabad for today's first game and I am Suneer Chowdhary to take you through this one, followed by the Rajasthan v Mumbai encounter.

------------------------------------

It's Mathews v Sangakkara again. Both the Sri Lankans have had a poor start to the IPL, and there have been murmurs over their inclusion in the playing XIs of their respective sides. Sunrisers and Pune have clashed once before this year, with Sunrisers defending a low score in style, but Pune have turned things around since. Wins against Rajasthan and Chennai have put their campaign back on track. Will Mathews automatically return to the Pune XI? Will Sunrisers consider benching Sanga? Here's the match preview. Talking of Sri Lankans - Happy Birthday Murali.

Is Steve Smith a part of your Fantasy XI? Draft him in now, and if he has another good game, you could be in line for one of our daily prizes. There's another game later in the day - Pondulkar v Dravid should be fun. How many legends can you fit into the same Fantasy XI? Remember to lock your team for the day by 4 pm IST.

The best live IPL show on the internet is about to get better. Tune in at 7 30 pm IST today to catch Bollywood actor, rugby player and big-time cricket fan Rahul Bose on The Huddle.

Kumar to Patel, no run, on a length and swing away from the left-hander, lets that one go through to the keeper

0.2

Kumar to Patel, 1 run, swing for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, opens the face of the bat and guides it to third-man for a single to get away today

0.3

Kumar to de Kock, no run, very outside the off but not wide enough to be called a wide. de Kock shoulders arms and it goes through

0.4

Kumar to de Kock, no run, fuller from Bhuvneshwar this time and he has no hesitation in going for a drive, straight to the cover fielder though

0.5

Kumar to de Kock, 1 run, bit of swing back into the batsman and defended on the back-foot, taps it to the leg side for a single

0.6

Kumar to Patel, no run, big, big appeal for an lbw, that was jagging back into the batsman and Patel got nowhere close to it. Well, at least his bat did not, hits the pads and the appeal followed, could have gone over the stumps.

End of over 1 (2 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 2/0 (RR: 2.00)

anuraag : "Surprise surprise Sun Risers. You are lucky. No wicket for Bhuvi in the first over. He usually does that. I personally feel that this is a great start."

Dinda takes up the bowling.

1.1

Dinda to de Kock, no run, short of length on the middle stump and defended away to the leg side

1.2

Dinda to de Kock, no run, goes down the track and the ball does not come on to the bat, he was looking to pull it over mid-wicket, instead it flies to mid-on but on bounce

1.3

Dinda to de Kock, 1 run, short of length again and de Kock has a bit of difficulty playing it away, pushes it to the leg side for a single

1.4

Dinda to Patel, 1 run, short of length again and on his pads, flicked away to the square-leg and rotates the strike again

1.5

Dinda to de Kock, no run, no change in the length and de Kock wants to go down, give himself some room and crack it through the covers, but gets it away to the point fielder

1.6

Dinda to de Kock, 1 wide, down the leg side and given wide, was looking to scoop it over the fine-leg by moving to the off side, doesn't get any bat.

1.6

Dinda to de Kock, OUT, gone, caught! was looking to get inside the line of the ball and smack it through the covers but gets it in air and straight to the fielder there, Hyderabad have lost their first!

Hanuma Vihari at three. Change in the order then.

SGS: "@ Suneer Chowdhry- Can u tell the amount emails you received aganist angelo for his selffish decision & for Sangga for his team work"

If I started counting, it will take me to the end of the tournament doing just that.

2.1

Kumar to Patel, FOUR, edged and goes through the slips for a four! He was looking to open the face of the bat but the ball seems to have bounced more than he thought it would and it flies off the edge...not to hand

2.2

Kumar to Patel, no run, pushed to the off side and wanted a single, sent back by the non-striker

2.3

Kumar to Patel, FOUR, down the leg-side and it goes for four more, seems to have taken some bat of the Parthiv bat and it races away, beats Uthappa behind and for the second four this over

2.4

Kumar to Patel, 2 runs, again that opening of the face of the bat and this time in much more control. Who was not in control was the fielder at third-man, Nayar and the misfield allows them to come back for the second

2.5

Kumar to Patel, OUT, got him! bowled! he was looking to defend at it, and it looked like he was waiting for it to swing back, it did but not as much as he thought and plays inside the line, misses, bowled. Checking for a no-ball but it's clearly not.

PA Patel b Kumar 12 (13m 9b 2x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

Captain Cameron is at four.

neel: "Now that we have seen atleast 4 matches from all the teams, who are the players who are likely to be retained by their franchies? Any guesses? My opinion - Raina, dhoni and may be Ashwin for CSK, Kohli, AB, Gayle for RCB, Malinga, Pollard, DK and Rohit Sharma for MI, Gambir, Kallis and Morgan for KKR, Warner, Morkel and Sehwag for DD. Other teams like RR, SRH, KXI may not retain anybody"

Manu Jha: "People should understand that Sanga's career has already reached the peak where he can dictate terms but Angelo is a new guy, esp when playing in IPL has to give performances to be choosen by any Franchisee next time. Being a captain its obvious he ll take more chances."

2.6

Kumar to White, OUT, bowled him again! White's now out and BK's on a hat-trick! It was an in-swinger that kept a tad low too, White was playing neither forward nor back and the ball sneaks through him, the stumps are rattled and they are three down

A little late in the day, but I was expecting someone to send this. Ashok: "What a start! Pune should be Kock-a-hoop!!"

3.1

Dinda to Vihari, no run, outside the off stump and left alone by the new number three, too wide to go fiddling at it given the score

3.2

Dinda to Vihari, 1 run, and now a bit of bounce for Dinda, was playing on the back foot and taps it to third-man for a single

Dave Edmond: "Some people will now understand why should Sanga included in the team"

3.3

Dinda to Samantray, no run, short of length, digging it in and though it does not rise too much, the batsman goes under it, it was a touch wide too

3.4

Dinda to Samantray, no run, outside the off on a length and he has a swish at it, misses and it goes through to the keeper

Robbin: "@neel how can you forget to retain the following! MUMBAI- Tendulkar CHENNAI- JADEJA KKR- S. NARINE RR - WATSON"

andyram: "thats the price you pay for not giving BK a wicket in his first over."

Rajkumar@Hyderabadi: "@neel - How can Sunrisers dare leave the "Stengun" Steyn !!"

3.5

Dinda to Samantray, no run, bouncer again, and down the leg side, he ducks under the bouncer

3.6

Dinda to Samantray, no run, and now on a good length, the previous bouncers seemed to have softened him up a little and he was looking to defend a tad warily, misses the outside edge

End of over 4 (1 run) Sunrisers Hyderabad 16/3 (RR: 4.00)

Hat-trick ball.

4.1

Kumar to Vihari, no run, hat-trick avoided, fuller and swinging back in but pushed it to mid-on

4.2

Kumar to Vihari, 1 wide, down the leg side, misses his line and despite no swing on that one, it's wide enough to be called a wide.

4.2

Kumar to Vihari, no run, fuller on the off stump and the batsman defends on the front foot, rolls over to the off side where there is a bunch of fielders waiting

4.3

Kumar to Vihari, no run, and now on the back-foot, defended to to the off side yet again

More of it here.

Abhijeet Ghosh: "Well they would be Kock-a-hoop now that they have White washed Hyderabad!"

4.4

Kumar to Vihari, no run, shorter in length, outside the off, wants the batsman to go after him but he lets it go through

4.5

Kumar to Vihari, no run, and again, change of length but impeccable line outside the off, the batsman's happy too, to leave it alone definitely a lot of swing for BK

4.6

Kumar to Vihari, OUT, edged and taken! BK's got his third! he was bowling them outside the off but this one was a lot closer and to go with the swing away from the bat, it made it a potent delivery. Looking to defend at it, takes the outside edge and flies to the first slip where after a bit of a juggle, it's caught.

Mathews comes on.

5.1

Mathews to Samantray, no run, short of length, slower on the middle stump and tapped straight back in front of him, wanted a single but is sent back

5.2

Mathews to Samantray, no run, edged and on the bounce to the keeper. it was not too quick either and the batsman was looking to open the face of the bat.

5.3

Mathews to Samantray, 2 runs, short of length and pulled away to the right of mid-on for a couple of runs

5.4

Mathews to Samantray, FOUR, aah, a full-bloodied pull over the mid-wicket for a four! it was short of length again and he was looking to play his shot there, good thing too given the situation

Madhavan: "On a side note, is it curtains down for Zaheer as a India player ? BK, Ishant and Umesh - all doing well - where is the place for zaheer ??"

5.5

Mathews to Samantray, 1 run, slows it down, on the middle stump and he gently taps it to square-leg to get across for a single

5.6

Mathews to KV Sharma, 1 run, guides it to the off side where Finch flies across and fields well at gully

End of over 6 (8 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 25/4 (RR: 4.16)

End of the PP overs.

Arun: "Can they send Ishant as night watchman before perera begans cut loose"

6.1

Kumar to KV Sharma, 2 runs, short of good length and it hits the bat hard as the batsman tries to defend at it, the ball flies through the off side for a couple of runs

6.2

Kumar to KV Sharma, no run, appeal for an lbw, the ball was pitching on middle and hitting the pads first, but not given. Looked close to me!

6.3

Kumar to KV Sharma, no run, defended on the off side and to the fielder

6.4

Kumar to KV Sharma, 1 wide, bouncer and called a wide! tries to change things around there and digs it very short but it goes well over the batsman and rightly called a wide

6.4

Kumar to KV Sharma, 1 run, opens the face of the bat, despite the presence of two slips and it runs down to third-man for a single

6.5

Kumar to Samantray, 1 run, defended on the back foot and to the right of the bowler, who has to rush across to get close to it and in the mean time they get a single

6.6

Kumar to KV Sharma, no run, short of length and opens the face of the bat to the off side, not for runs though and that's the end of his spell, one of the very good ones from a good swing bowler

End of over 7 (5 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 30/4 (RR: 4.28)

Rahul Sharma comes on now. Only over from the captain then.

ryan: "umm Madhavan..surely you aren't suggesting good IPL form means good test or even ODI form? Zak would walk into the Indian side"

Afsar: "@Madhavan: the answer for your question "Where is the place for Zaheer?" is at the death non three of them are good death bowlers, even RCB Coach thinks they are missing a good death bowler in form of Zaheer."

Gonzo: "Movement for the bowlers. Steyn and Ishant should be a handful on this, even if SH only make 110."

7.1

Sharma to Samantray, no run, shorter but some bounce and the flick goes to short square-leg

7.2

Sharma to Samantray, no run, fuller this time, quicker too and defended on the front foot to the off side

7.3

Sharma to Samantray, 1 run, on the back foot and punched down the ground to long-on for a single

Dib: "Biplab Samantray is a good upcoming player from Orissa, feels good to see Orissa players coming to national reckoning."

7.4

Sharma to KV Sharma, no run, fuller and slower from Rahul and should have been driven through the covers, instead it's tapped to short cover

7.5

Sharma to KV Sharma, 1 run, wants to lash at it but the slowness of the track defeats the shot, drives it to long-on for a single

7.6

Sharma to Samantray, 1 run, fullish outside the off and easily knocked down to long-off to get them a single

End of over 8 (3 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 33/4 (RR: 4.12)

KV Sharma    5* (8b)      B Kumar    4-0-18-3

A stand of 16 runs from three overs. More than doubled the score since the last wicket fell. Mitch Marsh comes on.

8.1

Marsh to Samantray, 1 run, fuller on the middle stump and it's flicked away to the deep square-leg for a single

Sudipta: "Zak has been anything but a death over bowler in T20s. Its time he bids adieu to T20s and possibly even ODIs and focus on tests. PS: I love Zak's bowling, just that he fits the bill no more."

Akalp: "Zaheer a good death bowler? Forgot world cup 2011 final. @Afsar: "@Madhavan: the answer for your question "Where is the place for Zaheer?" is at the death non three of them are good death bowlers, even RCB Coach thinks they are missing a good death bowler in form of Zaheer.""

8.2

Marsh to KV Sharma, 1 run, a very slow, slower ball, waits for it, opens the face of the bat and it trickles down to the third-man for a single

8.3

Marsh to Samantray, FOUR, half-edge, half opens the face of the bat and guides it through third-man for a four! The third-man was kept square on this slow pitch but Marsh's pace gets the ball very fine

8.4

Marsh to Samantray, 1 run, slower ball on his pads and flicked away to the leg side for a single

8.5

Marsh to KV Sharma, no run, another slowish off break and he taps it to the off side, not for runs

8.6

Marsh to KV Sharma, 1 run, quicker, shorter, on the pads and flicked to backward square-leg region for a single

End of over 9 (8 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 41/4 (RR: 4.55)

BB Samantray    16* (17b 2x4)      R Sharma    1-0-3-0

Rahul continues.

Time to review strategies then. Of your fantasy teams too.

Rakesh: "Is it only my perception or otherwise? The only two fierce performing captains of IPL 2013 are Kohli and Gambhir the ones who want to captain their national team asap. Rest all are or have been their National team captains !!"

Siddharth: "@Sudipta:What do you mean by death in Tests?"

Priyank Jindal: "I might sound stupid to some, but SRH badly need 4 overseas batsmen "until Dhawan returns", that means Steyn will have to sit out. Bring in Sammy (who can bowl too) in place of Steyn. Bowling will still look okay :- Ishant, Mishra, Perera, Sammy and Reddy."

9.1

Sharma to KV Sharma, no run, fuller on the off stump and a bit of turn back, defended to the off side, wanted a single but the non-striker sends him back

9.2

Sharma to KV Sharma, OUT, gone, lbw, given! that was a strange appeal, it hits the pads and only the bowler was going for it, went on and on, went once, paused, went twice and would have appealed the third time had the umpire not raised his finger. On the other hand, Uthappa did not even look, he was more interested in where the ball was! Replays suggest it was close enough to be given out.

KV Sharma lbw b Sharma 7 (21m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 53.84

Marsh to Perera, 1 run, in the air as he looks to drive it on the up, gets an outside edge and flies to third-man for a single

10.2

Marsh to Samantray, no run, on his pads and run-out missed! it was flicked to the short fine-leg fielder and the batsman was off for a suicidal run, he was halfway down and the throw misses the stumps

10.3

Marsh to Samantray, 1 run, driven to long-on, was a fuller one and easily tapped away for a single

10.4

Marsh to Perera, OUT, edged and taken, Perera's gone now! Very poor shot under the circumstances, it was wider outside the off and Perera went for a blazing cover drive, like Sanath Jayasuriya in his prime would, unfortunately for him it only gets an outside edge and Uthappa takes a good catch.

manoj: "People criticized Sanga, he plays so slowly that Sun Risers find it difficult to score 150+. Now, I feel his stay at the crease was the reason that Sun Risers were able to score atleast 140+."

13.5

Marsh to Mishra, 1 run, shorter in length, does not come on to the bat too quickly and the leading edge falls in the cover region, single for the batsman

13.6

Marsh to Samantray, 1 run, slower one but it's well played by the batsman, sees it through to his bat, opens the face and guides it away for a single

End of over 14 (5 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 71/6 (RR: 5.07)

14.6

Sharma to Samantray, OUT, hits in the air and is caught at long-off! Sunny G on TV commentary calls it a soft dismissal and I have no reason to disagree, he was doing well so far but this is a fuller one and he tries to chip it over the in-field. Unfortunately it ends up being a tame shot that goes to the long-off fielder

Praveen Shivapur: "@cricinfo Nope, Perera is not the captain cos you know Tendulkar is playing today! He will be the captain even if that means i end up at the bottom of the ranking table. Oh btw i am on the verge of cracking into the top 1000 after this match provided steyn gets a 5 for and MoM."

Ruchit Vachhrajani: "And in that case, Sir Ravindra Jadeja is the head of the department..." Which department?

According to some, he's also the curriculum, the dean, the syllabus and some other things. Here's one more: Snigdhaneel: "@Prashant: If Sachin is the University, Sir Ravindra Jadeja is the Universe... Beat that :P"

Chandramouli: "But MSD would still be that back bencher whom even the professors admire"

Kiran: "@Prashanth: Yes, Sachin is an University with outdated sylabus. Rahul is a gold medalist in all the Universities."

Mathews to Ashish Reddy, 1 run, driven down the ground for a single again, good stuff from the lower order

16.5

Mathews to Mishra, 1 run, outside the off and fuller again, driven to the deep cover region for a single

16.6

Mathews to Ashish Reddy, 1 run, and now on the leg side, taps it away for the fifth single of the over, not too bad given the situation of the game

A Ashish Reddy    6* (7b)      AD Mathews    3-0-17-0

17.1

Dinda to Ashish Reddy, no run, full-toss and he wanted to crack it away through the covers, gets it to the fielder, Mathews, and he underarms it to the non-striking end, misses, had he hit there, it would have been curtains!

17.6

Dinda to Mishra, no run, slower one with a lot of width, tries to smash it over the the covers, the outside edge does not carry through to the keeper

End of over 18 (7 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 93/7 (RR: 5.16)
A Mishra    20* (18b 2x4)      AB Dinda    3-0-11-1
A Ashish Reddy    8* (10b)      AD Mathews    3-0-17-0

Dave: "Unrelated but hey, at least their run rate is better compared Zimbabwe's effort down South:)"

A very good point. It must be a tedious task to watch that batting too.

18.1

Mathews to Ashish Reddy, 2 runs, fuller which is taken on the full by the batsman, smashes it straight back but Mathews does not get anything on it and Manish Pandey fumbles at long-off

18.2

Mathews to Ashish Reddy, 1 run, full-toss from Mathews and it's smacked down the ground, but only for a single

18.3

Mathews to Mishra, 1 run, yorker length ball but Mishra does well to dig it out and gets a single to long-on

18.4

18.5

Mathews to Ashish Reddy, 1 run, very full yet again and the smashing straight drive goes to the fielder this time, fielded too

A Mishra    22* (20b 2x4)      AD Mathews    4-0-29-0
A Ashish Reddy    18* (14b 1x6)      AB Dinda    3-0-11-1

...and then moving on to the others. Raghavan: "Gambhir and Kohli would be those students who always vow to perform better in the next sem after being rusticated on disciplinary grounds"

19.1

Dinda to Mishra, 1 run, yorker, tailing into the batsman and Mishra is able to get his bat down in time, driven to long-on for a single

19.2

Dinda to Ashish Reddy, 1 run, again a very full ball, is able to get it away to long-on where Smith fields

19.4

Dinda to Mishra, 2 runs, another slower one and the batsman waits on it before cracking it through the covers for a couple of runs

A very good innings from Mishra, 30 off 24 where the top-order was miserable

19.6

Dinda to Steyn, FOUR, fullish ball from Dinda and smashed down the ground by Steyn for a four! Suddenly they have got themselves to 119!

42/5 in 10 overs. 75/7 in 15 and they score 44 in the last five overs on a track which is difficult to bat on. Still 120 is not a very big total. But still more, Hyderabad has the bowling attack to test the opposition. Back in 10 with the chase!

End of over 20 (14 runs) Sunrisers Hyderabad 119/8
DW Steyn    4* (1b 1x4)      AB Dinda    4-0-25-1
