Indian Premier League - 25th match

Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kings XI Punjab

Sunrisers Hyderabad won by 5 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)

7.59 pm

Mandeep Singh on strike. Gilly at the non-striker. Vihari with the ball.

7.55 pm

Only five minutes away from the start. Gilchrist needs some runs and desperately. Hyderabad, as a team, need the same. Must say that both sides have strong bowling line-ups, the Sunrisers marginally better.

Ravinder: "Punjab has accommodated more batsmen to strengthen their batting but Miller should not have been dropped for Dmitri. Wrong move by Gilly." We will soon know but I had Miller in my team, so yep, the heart aches.

7.45 pm

Azhar Mahmood is still a part of the 11. It's David Miller who goes out to make way for Mascarenhas.

Adhithya S R: "So I'm assuming there might be a valid reason for removing Miller.... none come to mind though!!! Oh no maybe they think their batting is really strong even without him."

Naveen: "Mascarenhas should be sent to bat as a pinch hitter. He has proved some times in the past."

Yavvan: "How does the pitch look like? I still have to make changes and captain." The captains thought that it had a lot of patches but none were able to comment on will it play. Going by history, it could be a low-scoring match.

7.40 pm

What are your memories of Hyderabad cricket? Saad bin Jung remembers playing with Jaisimha and Pataudi in the '60s and '70s?

7.30 pm, Toss

It's Cameron White at the toss. So no Sanga I am assuming. And Adam Gilchrist's out there too.

Tails is the call and Gilly has won the toss and decided to bat first. No reason to bat first, could slow up he reckons but wants to get some score on the board. He had a strange look on his face when asked why he wanted to bat first.

White calls it an 'interesting' looking wicket. Gilly also agrees.

Mascarenhas comes in, as does Paul Valthaty, Reddy comes in for Parthiv Patel.

Kalyan: "Its time Gilly comes up with a good knock... against his previous team (if I may call that)!"

7.20 pm

Varun Sudhakar: "I think it is time White sits out and its Sanga and De Kock playing in tandem. Its been a dream start and if only the batting can click, SunRisers are serious contenders!"

Dubes: "@Varun: No, White is the dark horse in my Fantasy team!"

NIRANJAN LELE: "Sammy should replace Q de Kock. This will give more stable look to SRH side.Sammy will add more W.I. style to this IPL."

Siddharth the prediator: "Why HSR not Trying JP Duminny insted of D Kock, if Dumminy comes Hsr middle order will be much stronger. and Dhawan should open with Patel followed by White and company."

WiqCric: "Not sure why one one spoke about the White's captaincy in the last match against PWI. I stronly feel, it was his captaicy tactics which won the game. The 20th over was due to be bowled by Karan Sharma or Ashish Reddy as he has very cleverly finished bowling Ishant, Steyn, Amit and Perera.. If PWI figured out that, they would have taken the game to 20th over, but Mishra did not give that chance... waiting to see something like that again from White and team..!"

No support for Punjab today?

And I have my first Punjab supporter here...

Sharad Sharma: "There is support for Punjab indeed. I am all behind them. Just to note - SRH fans were all for playing de Kock - One game and they want him out now?"

...and then some more!

Hariharan: "I think Pommersbach should get a game after the splendid BBL he had!"

7.10 pm

How many of you thought Sunrisers Hyderabad would be at the third spot in the points table after a third into the league stage?

The Sunrisers have a chance to take that number one spot tonight when they take on the Kings XI Punjab at Hyderabad and that will be a huge achievement considering the way they have batted this entire tournament. Punjab, on the other hand, have won and lost two apiece and have a chance to make it to the top four with a win here.

Suneer Chowdhary here to take you through whichever team notches up a victory here!

*************

Sunrisers have made a habit of defending low scores with their gun bowling attack. The Kings XI don't have the strongest batting line-up in the competition, so they will be up against it. Will they be able to carry on the momentum from their shock win against KKR? Here's our preview to Sunrisers v Kings XI.

Adm Gilchrist is due big-time. If he doesn't drop himself today, that is. How about drafting him into your Fantasy XI? There are daily prizes on offer, so it's ok if you have fallen behind on the overall leaderboard. Sunrisers are perhaps the favourites, but the IPL games haven't always gone to script. Fancy the Kings XI to pull off an upset? Register your hunches in the Tata Motors T20 predictor.

Meanwhile the county season is underway in UK, and you can follow the action live on our all-new live county blog. The IPL presents a vexing question to England fans. David Hopps explains here.

Good first over from Vihari. It's Dale Steyn with the ball.

1.1

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, in swinger first up and it's fullish as well, Gilly's playing him off the back foot, defended to the off side

1.2

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, another in-swinger into the left-hander, nice curve back in and Gilly is very, very watchful, pushes it to the covers

1.3

Steyn to Gilchrist, 1 run, shortish and Gilly unleashes a very quick pull, short arm jab almost but goes straight to the long-leg fielder and they get a single, it whizzed off the bat

1.4

Steyn to Mandeep Singh, no run, out-swinger for Mandeep and he lets it go through to the keeper, not the aggression this time that was on display in the first over

1.5

Steyn to Mandeep Singh, 1 run, short of length on the off stump and pushed to the mid-off region where Ishant fields and fires it back in, does not hit but Mandy was in as it is

1.6

Steyn to Gilchrist, 2 runs, another short of length delivery from Steyn and Gilchrist pulls it well again, this is in front of square and the fielder has to run around from deep square leg to stop it, was racing away, restricted to two

Ish: "@Commentator: I think you don't need to worry about you fantasy team. I am pretty sure you have been given special privileges of unlimited substitutions and changing your team in between the matches as one of your perks for this job." How I wish, sigh.

2.1

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, FOUR, short of length and he picks up the length very early, pulled away to the deep square-leg region for a four!

2.2

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, 1 wide, down the leg side, on his pads and a tickle on it would have taken it to the fence, instead it's a wide called

2.2

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, no run, short of length from Ishant yet again and Mandeep looks to whip it across the line, goes to mid-on

2.3

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, 2 runs, was moving away to the leg side there, Ishant follows him and tries to cramp him up, but he's able to flick it away in front of square-leg for a couple of runs

2.4

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, 2 runs, another flick and and another couple of runs, was a quick enough delivery but Mandeep was equal to it, it was in the air for some time. Mishra gave chase but wasn't able to restrict it to one

2.5

I Sharma to Mandeep Singh, OUT, top-edge and caught! that was a short of length ball and he was trying to pull it away, was in an aggressive mood tonight but that brings about his downfall too, the ball gets his top edge and it goes high, swirls away from the keeper de Kock who runs towards the third-man region to catch it well

Mandeep Singh c †de Kock b I Sharma 10 (12m 11b 1x4 0x6) SR: 90.90

2.6

I Sharma to Gilchrist, 1 run, length ball that rises disconcertingly at the batsman, who is able to tap it away to the leg side for a quick one

3.1

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, fuller from Steyn this time but Gilly's sitting on his back foot and is able to still play it away to the off side

3.2

Steyn to Gilchrist, no run, ooh, he was trying to drill it through the covers there, as he got some width from Steyn, so far he was very close to the stumps but not that time, misses, through to the keeper

3.3

Steyn to Gilchrist, 1 run, shorter from Steyn and the pull is a bit of a mis-hit, goes straight to Mishra at short fine-leg, and he misfields! It was as straightforward as they come and he missed it

3.4

Steyn to Valthaty, no run, bouncer from Steyn, 147.6 km/hr, really quick and Valthaty lets it go, that was a bit wide outside the off, allowed him to sway away easily

3.5

Steyn to Valthaty, no run, fuller from Steyn and defended to the off side by Valthaty, played well that one

3.6

Steyn to Valthaty, no run, and that's a pretty ordinary shot, 146 km/hr, on a length and Valthaty was looking to walk through it, he missed the bat by a distance and it goes through to the keeper

4.1

Perera to Gilchrist, FOUR, brilliant shot, short of length and cut hard, through the covers and for a four! that had some width for him and he went after it

4.2

Perera to Gilchrist, no run, a tad slower from Perera and he opens the face of the bat but is not able to work it away to the off side properly, to the fielder

4.3

Perera to Gilchrist, FOUR, whoa, that's not a shot of a batsman not in form! it was a length ball and Gilly clears his foot slightly, and whacks it over mid-wicket for a four, second in the over

4.4

Perera to Gilchrist, FOUR, make it three fours in four balls, it's on a length and Gilly bludgeons it between mid-on and mid-wicket inside the circle, cracked it, absolutely cracked it

4.5

Perera to Gilchrist, no run, a slower ball this time, it did not come on to the bat this time, was looking to pull it away but hits the bottom of the bat

4.6

Perera to Gilchrist, no run, shorter and slower and the pull shot is not hit as well as he would have liked, goes to the fielder who throws it back to the non-striker's end, Valthaty was out of his crease and just gets back in time

Ryan: "Gilchrist looked quite annoyed in the pre-match interviews when his team were described as 'unfancied' - think it's fired him up!" That he did!

5.1

I Sharma to Valthaty, no run, short of length, outside the off stump and that's defended to the off side

5.2

I Sharma to Valthaty, 1 run, fullish from Ishant and played away to square-leg where it's fielded by Vihari who throws it at the non-striker's end, hits the stumps and the ricochet gets him an overthrow

5.3

I Sharma to Gilchrist, FOUR, slashes hard and for a four! that's his favourite shot and he's not been hitting those earlier this tournament, this time he does, short, wide and cut hard to the fence

5.4

I Sharma to Gilchrist, no run, short of length and wanted to cut it again, pity he does not get any bat on it, goes through to the keeper

5.5

I Sharma to Gilchrist, 1 run, short of length but closer to the batsman, who opens the face of the bat and guides it down to third-man for a single

5.6

I Sharma to Valthaty, 1 run, shortish in length on the off stump and he is able to push it to mid-on and scamper off for a quick single there

6.3

KV Sharma to Valthaty, no run, quicker, flatter and defended to the leg side, three dots now

6.4

KV Sharma to Valthaty, no run, and some more turn! that was shorter in length and he was looking to tap it away to the off side but beaten again!

6.5

KV Sharma to Valthaty, 2 runs, a sweep this time, he is able to get some bat on it and they are off for a second run, Steyn has a good arm but the throw isn't accurate enough or he could well have been run-out

6.6

KV Sharma to Valthaty, 4 byes, and now four byes because of the extra turn, spun across the bat again and he was looking to drive at it, he missed, the keeper missed but the scorer does not, adds four byes to the total

That was some over. Mishra could prove to be a handful on this one. He's on now.

7.1

Mishra to Gilchrist, no run, shorter, flatter and not too much turn, goes straight on and hit back to the bowler

7.2

Mishra to Gilchrist, 1 run, fuller and on the middle stump, driven down the ground for a single

7.3

Mishra to Valthaty, no run, slows it up well and it's defended to the off side

7.5

Mishra to Valthaty, 1 run, swept away this time because it was on his pads and full, goes to fine-leg for a single

8.3

KV Sharma to Gilchrist, no run, tries to guide it through third-man but that's slower and it unable to use the pace of the ball

8.4

KV Sharma to Gilchrist, OUT, gone, caught at deep mid-wicket! that was shorter in length but the turn seems to have done him in, he was looking to pull it over the fielder but this is a difficult to pitch to do that against the slower bowlers, straight to Ishant, who looks like he barely moved an inch to catch it

8.6

KV Sharma to Valthaty, OUT, very full and that's been hit straight to the fielder, gone! that was a poor shot from someone who's taken 17 balls to get his eye in, it was full and he tried to hit it over the fielder at long-on, does not get it properly off the middle and it lobs up gently to the long-off fielder who takes it as easily as Ishant took the previous catch, gone!

9.4

Steyn to Hussey, FOUR, inside edge for a four! that could have gone anywhere, to the keeper, on to the stumps and to the fence, the ball chose the latter option and helps Punjab get four more to their score

9.5

Eddie: "Why the Gurkeerat bashing? He has got a 93* and a SR of more than 125. What more you need in a T20 -- AND on such a pitch?"

16.1

I Sharma to Hussey, 1 run, down the pitch and he was looking to clear the off side, on the bounce to the sweeper fielder

16.2

I Sharma to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, it was on a length but keeps a tad low, flicked away to the leg side for a single

16.3

I Sharma to Hussey, OUT, gone, caught on the second attempt! tries to hit Ishant out of the ground, sliced it a tad more than he would have liked and it went straight to Akshat who fumbles with it before grabbing it on the second attempt

DJ Hussey c Reddy b I Sharma 22 (38m 24b 1x4 1x6) SR: 91.66

16.4

I Sharma to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, opens the face of the bat and gets it through backward point for a single to deep third-man

16.5

I Sharma to Azhar Mahmood, no run, short of a good length but on the middle stump and he has to defend it back to the bowler

16.6

I Sharma to Azhar Mahmood, no run, and almost an outside edge, beaten, misses it through to the keeper

End of over 17 (3 runs) Kings XI Punjab 105/5 (RR: 6.17)
Azhar Mahmood    0* (2b)      I Sharma    4-0-29-2
Gurkeerat Singh    12* (8b 1x6)      A Mishra    3-0-20-0

17.1

Mishra to Gurkeerat Singh, FOUR, swept away behind square and gone for a four, that's good batting, chosen the field well

17.2

Mishra to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 leg bye, was looking to slog it away this time, it spins away from him, beats his bat, hits the back pad and gets him a single leg bye

17.3

Mishra to Azhar Mahmood, FOUR, smash, four! it was fuller on the off stump and drilled over the extra-cover region for a four, in the gap between the sweeper and long-off, too much width

17.4

Mishra to Azhar Mahmood, OUT, but now he's caught, Mishra gets a wicket! it was fuller, on the leg stump, Mahmood had to go for it but does not time it too well and he's caught at long-on!

Azhar Mahmood c Ashish Reddy b Mishra 4 (3m 4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

17.5

Mishra to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, OUT, gone, run-out! on his pads, on a length and he looks to flick it, gets a single and wants to come back for the second run, there was no such availability and he's run-out without facing a ball!

MS Gony run out 0 (1m 0b 0x4 0x6) SR: -

So while Mishra is not on a hat-trick, it's his team which is.

17.6

Mishra to Vohra, OUT, oh yes, hat-trick, team hat-trick for Hyderabad! it was a wrong 'un and that's been slogged away to Ishant Sharma at deep mid-wicket!

M Vohra c I Sharma b Mishra 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

End of over 18 (10 runs) Kings XI Punjab 115/8 (RR: 6.38)
     A Mishra    4-0-29-2
Gurkeerat Singh    17* (11b 1x4 1x6)      I Sharma    4-0-29-2

18.1

Steyn to Gurkeerat Singh, OUT, bowled him! gone, bowled, what a collapse, and again! he was looking to play it over the off side, the ball was too quick there and he misses it, crashes into the middle and about one-tenth of a second later it's lying flat on the ground.

Gurkeerat Singh b Steyn 17 (21m 12b 1x4 1x6) SR: 141.66

114/5 to 115/9. I get a sense of deja-vu.

18.2

Steyn to Kumar, no run, short of length, outside the off stump and he's not getting anywhere close to it, beaten

18.3

Steyn to Kumar, 1 run, flicked away to the leg side for a single

Syamantak: "Okay, for a moment I thought I was watching the Zim v Ban test match again." And I thought I was watching Pune v Hyderabad.

18.4

Steyn to Mascarenhas, no run, outside the off stump and he wants to cut it away, misses it, too pacy for the batsman

Mishra incidentally has 11 wickets in the tournament, which means he has the Purple Cap.

18.5

Steyn to Mascarenhas, 1 run, on the middle stump, opens the face of the bat, through to the third-man for a single

18.6

Steyn to Kumar, no run, fuller, faster and Praveen's able to play it back to the bowler, end of the 19th

End of over 19 (2 runs) Kings XI Punjab 117/9 (RR: 6.15)
P Kumar    1* (3b)      DW Steyn    4-0-14-1
AD Mascarenhas    1* (2b)      A Mishra    4-0-29-2

abhi: "Gayle is to sixes as Amit mishra is for wickets"

19.1

Perera to Mascarenhas, 1 run, fuller and slower and driven down the ground for a single

19.2

Perera to Kumar, 1 run, very full, on the off stump, flicked away to the leg side for a single

19.3

Perera to Mascarenhas, 1 run, pushed down the ground for a single to long-on now, they need each of this run here

19.4

Perera to Kumar, no run, very outside the off stump but not wide enough to be called a wide, Praveen Kumar has both his feet together and tries to swish away at it, misses

19.5

Perera to Kumar, 1 run, full-toss on his body and flicked away to the leg side for a single

19.6

Perera to Mascarenhas, 2 runs, full-toss and smacked over the bowler for a couple of runs, the long-on and long-off converge to get to the ball and by then they were off for a second

Phew, what an innings from Punjab. It looked to be headed in the right direction when first Gilly and then Chawla went about throwing their bats there. 140 looked achievable at one stage but a collapse not too dissimilar from the one that we saw in the previous Hyderabad game came about, where they lost four wickets off four balls. Still 123 is an interesting total, neither here nor there on this track and getting to it will not be easy. Something tells me we will see a change in the Hyderabad batting order too. Back in 10!
