Indian Premier League - 33rd match

Kolkata Knight Riders v Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians won by 5 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)

8.28 pm

Minutes away from the start and the Mumbai Indians are on the field. The batsmen are walking out too. Gautam Gambhir to open with Yusuf Pathan like the last game. Spin from Mumbai, Harbhajan Singh.

8.20 pm

Chintan: "It's KKR's batting that has been letting them down....in response they do just the opposite, remove a batsman laxmi shukla and got in a spinner abdullah....strange...." That's one way of looking at it. The other is that once they have a shorter batting line-up, batsmen will take more responsibility, which is what they need.

Vimal Menon: "So Rohit Sharma to captain Mumbai Indians?I am asking my CEO to gimme the reins tomorrow."

Bhuvan Apoorva Jha: "@Vimal Memon - I am already in the process of expressing my intentions to the Election Commission Of India for candidature in the next presidential elections. If Rohit can, so can I."

Uday: "All these comments bashing Rohit are funny. Its not like he was made the captin of the Indian team. They chose him because he's been a consistent performer in IPL over the years (including this one) and he probably has some leadership potential"

Yaseer Rizwan: "Surprising how Malinga's mediocrity this season has escaped scrutiny."

8.05 pm

PraKaant: "A person, who doesn't fit bill as a player, would be leading MI!" Three fifties in the last four games. Two of them unbeaten and leading to wins. That's a tad harsh.

That left-arm spinner Gambhir was talking about is Iqbal Abdulla. Mumbai have left out Ponting and got in Mitchell Johnson.

Arsh: "Dwayne Smith was already playing last match. Is Mitch the foreign replacement for Ponting?" Yep, he is!

8 pm, Toss

Heads is the call from Rohit, but he's lost his first toss as captain. Gambhir's batting first. Rohit wanted to bat too, but says fielding first is not a bad option.

Ojha and Chahal make it to the Mumbai Indians side and Munaf and Bhumrah go out. Kolkata have included a "left arm spinner" in their side.

Breaking. Rohit Sharma takes over as the captain of the Mumbai Indians side.

Anurag: "I just saw on TV that Ricky Ponting was warming up along with the rest of the group? Is he playing or not? Need to lock my fantasy team!" He's definitely warming up but we will soon know for sure!

7.50 pm

Just heard Harsha Bhogale saying on TV that Ricky Ponting may not be playing. But still unconfirmed.

7.40 pm

The toss will be held at 8 pm and the game will begin at 8.30 pm. This is of course subject to no further rain at Kolkata.

7.30 pm

No news on the toss yet. But it cannot be far away given that it's not raining now.

Anant: "@James. Not that difficult. Rahul Dravid has faced more balls in Test cricket than those 3 players that you mentioned. Plus he's in better form this IPL than them."

7.25 pm

Some better news. It's stopped raining at Kolkata. Will provide more updates as and when they are available.

Paresh: "I feel MI have shot themselves in the foot by appointing Ponting as their captian. He is woefully out of form and contiributing very little. But he is an automatic choice for the team by the virtue of him being skipper which means MI are mostly playing 10 players every game. Tendulkar should take over and get in an additional overseas player who can make a healthy contribution." Ponting was in decent domestic form when he was appointed the skipper. And I don't think Tendulkar (or Harbhajan) wanted to lead the side.

Krishna: "Why can't they appoint Dinesh Karthik as Captain instead of relying on SRT, Bhajji & Punter. He has good cricket brain." And he's been scoring a few too.

7.20 pm

Narbavi: "Hey why aren't you mentioning about the rain which could delay or cancel this game for good" There you go! Many like Narbavi have sent across this message, it's raining hard at Eden Gardens.

Suraj has an interesting point to make. "If given a chance to live Sachin's life , I will not choose as I have to sacrifice so many thing in my life from age of 12 yrs, only he can do that.......Happy Bday Sachin....my tru role model!!!"

James: "Ponting, Sachin and Kallis on show today. Difficult to find 3 greater or more epxerienced international batsmen." Hopefully, the rains could prove to be a dampener.

Ravi: "Mumbai should rest Ponting and Play Maxwell or Coulter nile. Ponting should be brought in for the Big games ONLY. I bet you he will fire on that day."

7.15 pm

If it's for the sake of Sachin, one cannot help but oblige! Rajesh Gopal: "Guys...I have written like a million comments to you, but none got published so far :) but now, for the Sake of Sachin, I hope you publish this one The Lord of Lords the Lead at Leeds the Swamy at Chinnaswamy the King of Kingsmead the Wonder at Wanderer the Whacker at WACA and our Gabbar at Gabba Solute to you Sachin! Happy Birth Day and many happy runs of the day!"

...and here's another one. anand sharma: "Virat kohli might be the fittest player in the team, But if you are not playing the entire team looks unfit... # Happy B'day Sachin :)"

Shahed: "Happy birthday to Sachin. He has provided unparallelled joy, inspiration and happiness to billions including me. What you have provided to us is quite an unmatchable feat. Thank you for all you have done and hope you have a great life ahead. That said, we have cricket match today and I hope MI have their focus on the match; these are very crucial 2 points."

Steve: "Suneer, when you write "Tendo just might be in the XI today. You never know.", did you mean Tendulkar or ten Doeschate? Or both would be nice!" ten Doeschate all the way mate.

Moving on to the other sub-plots for the day, here's a suggestion worth looking at. Chetan: "Its High Time MI Drop Ponting from the side and give other Oz's a chance!"

7.10 pm

33rd match in the IPL 2013, Eden Gardens is the venue and two big-ticket teams in the house. It's the Kolkata Knight Riders taking on the Mumbai Indians.

What's interesting is that both teams are coming off two successive defeats. While Kolkata were edged out by Punjab and Chennai, Mumbai's defeat were a picture of contrast - losing by 87 runs and nine wickets.

Oh and did I mention that it's Sachin Tendulkar's 40th birthday today. It's his 25th birthday that I remember the most from all of them when this is what happened.

Suneer Chowdhary here to take you through this IPL 2013 game.

-----------------------------------------

It's Sachin Tendulkar's birthday. He got into reasonable form in Mumbai's previous game against Delhi. Can he turn it on today against KKR? Here's our match preview.

Tendulkar turning 40 gives all of us a chance to sit back and take stock of what he means to cricket, and to India. Tune in for The Huddle one hour before the start of play - at 7.00 pm IST - for a Sachin Tendulkar special. Opponent Mark Butcher, team-mate Amol Muzumdar, fan Rahul Bose and journalist Sharda Ugra will be on to give their unique perspectives. We had KKR CEO Venky Mysore on the show yesterday, and he said some very interesting stuff about the relationship between franchises and the governing council. Have a read here.

Ryan ten Doeschate hasn't been able to get a game so far this season. That's not stopped him from writing a series of top-quality IPL tour diaries for us. Here's the latest installment.

Tendo just might be in the XI today. You never know. If you have a hunch, you should bring him into your Fantasy XI before start of play. You could take home the daily prize, and stay in contention for the big rewards at the end of the tournament.

0.1

Harbhajan Singh to Pathan, FOUR, edged and through the slips for a four! what a start, he was looking to defend at it and the outside edge flies off the bat and eludes the right of the first slipper, Rohit in action

0.2

Harbhajan Singh to Pathan, FOUR, another four, second in a row! it was flighted just that little bit and he goes for the sweep, beats the in-field and gets it to deep square-leg for a four

0.3

Harbhajan Singh to Pathan, FOUR, three in a row! what a start! he has thrown his bat at it again, swept it to backward square-leg for the third in three balls

0.4

Harbhajan Singh to Pathan, SIX, and now, it is a six! fuller on the off stump and he bludgeons it over long-off for a six! Pathan's started like he's been watching a lot of Gayle!

0.5

Harbhajan Singh to Pathan, (no ball) 1 run, it gets worse for Harbhajan, this was flatter, fuller and swept well but for a single, but wait a minute, it's also a no-ball, and in turn a Free Hit!

yogi d: "Can we consider this as trial over and start again from 0/0" Why, do you have Harbhajan in your fantasy team?

0.5

Harbhajan Singh to Gambhir, SIX, and it goes for a six. Was always going to happen with a batsman like Gambhir on strike, it was floated up very full and he clears his foot and banishes it over long-on

0.6

Harbhajan Singh to Gambhir, no run, stop the press, there's a dot! it was short and he wanted to cut it away, hits it quite hard and there's no run

Shivam: "The ridiculousness of opening with an off-spinner against Pathan in the powerplay is just amazing. When you have Johnson who will definitely trouble Pathan, this decision is logic defying." Johnson will bowl now.

1.1

Johnson to Pathan, 1 wide, that's a very over-pitched ball and that's a very wide ball too, way outside the off and the batsman has nothing to do with it

1.1

Johnson to Pathan, OUT, edged and taken, Mitchell Johnson has taken the wicket and Harbhajan Singh is the catcher and I wonder whether Rohit would be wondering why he didn't start with the quicker bowler. was on a length and angling away from the batsman, he tries to get his bat down hard and the outside edge flies to the first slip, first blood

YK Pathan c Harbhajan Singh b Johnson 19 (7m 6b 3x4 1x6) SR: 316.66

Jacques Kallis at three.

1.4

Johnson to Gambhir, FOUR, full, swinging away from the bat and that's been drilled through the covers for a four! GG is sprinting away here as well!

1.5

Johnson to Gambhir, 3 runs, fullish on the middle stump this time and GG is able to push it through mid-wicket, good outfield too and almost makes it to the fence

1.6

Johnson to Kallis, 1 run, short of length and the batsman is able to tap it to the leg side for a single

Malinga to Kallis, no run, length outside the off stump and Kallis goes back and drives it back to the bowler who fields on his follow-through

2.4

2.5

Malinga to Gambhir, 1 run, on the middle stump and Gambhir is pushed to the back foot, is able to turn it to short fine-leg for a single

JH Kallis    11* (8b 2x4)      SL Malinga    1-0-10-0

4.2

Malinga to Kallis, no run, short of length and on the off stump, he is pushed on to the back foot before tapping it to mid-off for a single

4.3

Malinga to Kallis, 1 run, he continues to pitch it shorter but this is more cramping than the first ball and he's only able to tuck it to the leg side for a single

4.4

Malinga to Gambhir, no run, almost a wicket! it was a leading edge from Gambhir and Malinga needed to dive to his right if he had any chance of even coming close to touching the ball, survives!

Kieron Pollard comes on now. Where are the brakes?

Chintan: "Both the captains today are going through the same phase in their career. Performing consistently for their franchise but not able to perform for the country despite numerous opportunities."

Naman: "Last match they were way down the leg side and now this match they are giving way too much room on the off side....dont they the principle of bowling along off-stump line?"

DB Das b Malinga 6 (11m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 85.71

Overall, it's a good score. They were 26/0 in 1, so from there, Kolkata have scored 134 in 19, but they will be satisfied with the score. The pitch gets a lot slower here and that will make chasing very difficult once the ball loses its sheen. Ojha's getting interviewed and he admits the pitch was getting slower and he planned to bowl slow instead of darting them in. Back in 10 with Mumbai's chase.
