Indian Premier League - 35th match

Kolkata Knight Riders v Kings XI Punjab

Kolkata Knight Riders won by 6 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

Here we go with Adam Gilchrist and Mandeep Singh opening the batting and Balaji with the ball.

7.55 pm

Karthik K: "Drop Das for KKR and get Mccullum to strengthen the Batting as well as keeping. Drop Senanayake and get another Indian spinner or an All rounder....he would be equally effective as senanayake..Please for god's sake....dont waste a talent like Mccullum on the bench...."

Karl Correa: "I love the IPL and am probably the only person watching each and every game live in the United States. Why do people criticize it so much and not just enjoy it like we do with the EPL. This season has been great with the minnows showing that they can do more with less."

7.50 pm

Vishal Sheokand: "Last time I picked Azhar Mahmood in fantasy team, he was beched. I picked Perera, he was benched. Gilchrist should be thanking me for not picking him in my fantasy eleven instead of Dhoni. That can be the only reason for his inclusion. Seriously doubt he would have hit many sixes during practice."

Debangshu : "So KKR are chasing. Effectively, Kings XI need 3 wickets to win - Gambhir, Kallis and Morgan. Thats how sad the line-up looks like."

7.40 pm

Bala: "I cannot believe some are talking about dropping Kallis. Despite his failures with the bat, his bowling has been top notch this season. With Balaji not doing half as well as he did last season, Kallis becomes a very important member of the bowling attack for KKR. The balance he provides to KKR is invaluable."

Aamer: "what's wrong with KINGSXI ? not playing marsh against kolkata in kolkata is no brainer.. he is an excellent player of spin and the punjab batting could have revolved around him.. instead we would see another collapse" Marsh is still injured.

Matthew Vincent: "I really don't get KKR, McCullum has one of the finest T20 records in the game ( he's the leading T20I scorer and the only one to score 2 hundreds ), and yet they keep benching him...."

7.30 pm, Toss

Adam Gilchrist is at the toss as the captain of Punjab. Says he gets another chance after it was voted 3-1 in favour of him continuing to lead the side.

Gilly calls head and gets it right. Punjab have decided to bat first. Gambhir says he would have batted too.

Kallis is fully fit and is playing. No McCullum. A leggie, Ladda plays for KKR in place of Abdulla while Bisla also gets a place in the side. Azhar Mahmood comes back for Punjab in place of Pomersbach, while Awana goes out and Gurkeerat has been selected.

Prateek Singh: "Gambhir the "Player" and Gambhir the "Captain". One of them performs in a match. Both of them need to fire at a time to win KKR matches."

kiki: "no point bringing in bisla. Just bring in mccullum at no. 3 for kallis and thats it."

7.25 pm

Sahil Jain: "How about having Brett Lee in the side instead of Senanayake and using his batting potentials as well to a better extent (promoting him in the order)!" If Chawla and Mishra can bat up the order, so can Lee I guess.

phendel: "fantasy team not going so well....top 3000 with 73 subs left (i picked Gayle but did not captain him on his big day....big big mistake)"

7.20 pm

Simon Genikov: "Suneer, how is your fantasy team going? (ranking, points, transfers)" The last I checked it was in the top 500 with around 75 subs left. What about you?

Kalyan: "If KXIP manage to win tonight, they might get into playoffs, what with Marsh joining them at later stages"

Paras: "Surely McCullum and Bisla need to come in to strengthen the batting!? Punjab are really going to miss Harris too!" Bisla did not have his form going for him in the games he was picked. McCullum and Bisla are both keepers too.

m n v sridhar: "hope kings eleven skipper sits off today just like his foreign countreparts are doing due to his poor form"

Anurag: "What KKR are really missing this season is Shakib al Hasan. He is very easily forgotten despite his role in last year's triumph. Bringing him in for Senanayake will give incredible balance to the side. In fact, he is bowling excellently in Zimbabwe even as we speak."

7.15 pm

The team news may be at least 15 minutes away - even more given the captains keep forgetting their squads at the toss - but the news is that Jacques Kallis and Manoj Tiwary were injured last game and are in doubt for this game for the Knight Riders.

At the other side, Punjab kept Azhar Mahmood out last game and according to their coach Darren Lehmann, Shaun Marsh isn't fit enough to join the playing 11 tonight.

Kalyan: "Even KXIP camp must be pleasantly surprised to find themselves where they are on the points table! They have a REAL chance of making it to the play-offs!"

Ahmad: "High time KKR rethink their strategy and bring in Mccullum and Tendo, in place of Kallis & Senanayake . Kallis - nothing much to show in 7 games Sena - Narine's Spin twin , even though KKR have had problems with their batting."

7.10 pm

Seven games, five defeats for one team, four wins from those many games for the other. Not too many would have thought at the start of the tournament that these are the stats for the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab respectively, but that's how it is right now.

In short, the Knight Riders have a mire to climb out of while Punjab could get into the top four if they win this, at the half-way stage in the league engagements this season. Suneer Chowdhary here to take you through tonight's game between Gautam Gambhir's KKR and Adam Gilchrist's KXIP!

-----------------------------------

Three successive losses. After a promising start to the season, the defending champions KKR are beginning to look like the no-hopers from IPL 2. A win in the return game against KXIP could re-ignite their campaign. Here's our preview to the game.

It's been three years since Yusuf Pathan hit an IPL 50. Adam Gilchrist lasting an entire over is becoming a minor miracle. Do they make it to your Fantasy XI despite the poor form?

Australia's Ashes selection continues to be a topic of discussion across the cricket world. Matt Cleary believes the side is not as bad as it seems. Check out his blog on The Cordon. S Rajesh goes into Shane Watson numbers - he averaged 50.4 in 2009-10, but that's dropped to 25.4 since. More in today's Numbers Game.

Here's the latest episode, where Iain O'Brien, Mark Butcher and George Binoy join Jarrod Kimber and his baby for a chat around overseas cricketers. We had an engaging discussion on commentary with Harsha Bhogle when he was on the show. Today he's written on the subject on the site - give viewers the option to mute out the commentators if they aren't up to the mark.

Balaji to Gilchrist, no run, round the stumps and on a good length, tapped to the leg side by the captain

Ritesh: "Manoj Tiwary dropped?" Injured from last game.

0.2

Balaji to Gilchrist, 1 run, fuller this time from Balaji and Gilly's still on the back foot, he was looking to drive it but no power on it, gets it to wide mid-off for a single

Saj: "Senanayake had one bad match and now everyone wants him out of the KKR team! I'm glad Gambhir decided to have faith in him as the combination of Narine and Senanayake worked well for them in the previous matches. It is the batting that let KKR down, not the bowling."

0.3

Balaji to Mandeep Singh, no run, on a good length from over the wicket, bit of angle back into the batsman and that's tapped to the leg side, to the short mid-wicket

0.4

Balaji to Mandeep Singh, FOUR, shot, first four and it's his quick eye to spot that slightly short of length ball, immediately rocks back and slams it over the in-field for a four!

neel patel: "@karl correa. U r not the only one watchin all ipl games in usa, i am watching live cricket during chem lecture :)"

0.5

Balaji to Mandeep Singh, no run, bit fuller and almost a run-out! he had tapped to the off side and Gilly wanted to get going for a single, Morgan swoops down quickly and tries to throw down the stumps, Gilly is miles out and the fielder misses

0.6

Balaji to Mandeep Singh, no run, short of length and outside the off stump, 126.7 km/hr, wants to tap it away but the lack of pace defeats him

End of over 1 (5 runs) Kings XI Punjab 5/0 (RR: 5.00)

2.2

Balaji to Mandeep Singh, no run, beaten! what a delivery, good length and there was some movement off the seam, beats the outside edge of the bat and through to the keeper

Srikanth: ""@Sej - I beg to disagree with you. Kallis bowls sporadically, Balaji bowls economically without tickets, Lee bowls fearsome leaking runs and Narine carries the bowling every match. Bowlers need to step up and support Narine. Bring Abdulla , McCullum, Tendo to balance the team.""

Tushar: "@ Anand.. Silly question... Obviously Gauti.... :P"

Ram: "@Anand. Curtly talks to no man, but his stare is more than sufficient !!!"

Pattamatta: "@ Anand: Bhajji - only when started by someone else. Gambhir - like to start stuff, without any interference, and Kohli - When self performance isn't great, and then it only takes a smirk to aggrevate him."

4.1

Narine to Mandeep Singh, no run, whoa, almost got him, it was full enough to get him out to defend it but the turn away beats him

4.2

Narine to Mandeep Singh, 2 runs, and this one turns back into the batsman, he is able to get his bat and pad out and turn that away through square-leg for a couple of runs

Another Anand: "The first cricketer that comes to mind when talking about aggression is our very own Dada, SCG!! The one who started it in Indian cricket."

Viral Patel: "I have decided to support Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab this season. It has nothing to do with their beautiful owners (Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty) but they are the best underdog teams who fights it till the end and has chance of winning the tournament."

Weatherwings: "I am very surprised at the lack of discussion of Tendo here as a potential all rounder in KKR. The guy has performed whenever given a chance, he can bat, he can bowl, sure he belongs to a "minnow" nation, but that does not mean that he should be ignored. Had he been in a team like Rajasthan Royals, he would have been used cleverly. He can easily replace Kallis. Kallis's batting has been lackluster. Try out Tendo instead of him for a couple of games, who knows the guy might click??"

12.1

Balaji to Hussey, 1 run, quicker for Bala, is angling back into the batsman, who is not able to get it away, it gets away to the off side

12.4

Balaji to Vohra, SIX, and now it's off the middle of the bat, on yes it is! it was shorter in length probably because Balaji expected him to come down the track, he did shimmy down and clears it over the in-field

12.5

Balaji to Vohra, OUT, but now he's caught at deep cover! six and out is what Brett Lee would say in the dugout, it was wide and he went over the in-field on the square boundary off-side, not able to time it well, straight to the fielder at deep cover

Shaswat: "I won't be shocked if KXIP wins the IPL. They are quite a balanced team just like CSK and Gilchrist is a superb captain." What if he drops himself as he wanted to?

13.1

Narine to Miller, 1 run, shortish in length and is able to push it away to the long-off region for a single

13.2

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, fuller from Narine, slow tap to the leg side between long-on and mid-wicket and calls for a second even before he's run his first, good fielding keeps them down to 1

13.3

Narine to Miller, 2 runs, shortish in length and that's easily punched through mid-wicket for a couple of runs

13.4

Narine to Miller, no run, almost a wicket, he was going for a drive but the spin away from the batsman beats the outside edge

13.5

Narine to Miller, 1 run, shortish again and is able to tap it away to long-on for a single

13.6

Narine to Hussey, no run, that's quicker one that spins away from Hussey, who reads it well, pushes it to backward point and wants a single but is sent back

End of over 14 (5 runs) Kings XI Punjab 103/3 (RR: 7.35)
DJ Hussey    13* (12b 1x4)      SP Narine    2-0-15-0
DA Miller    4* (4b)      L Balaji    3-0-27-1

14.1

Ladda to Miller, no run, and beaten again, this time by Ladda, who gets it to turn back into the batsman,

14.2

Ladda to Miller, SIX, not this time, not at all! it was fullish and the batsman came down the track to thwack it over the bowler's head for a six, it was hit sweetly, not too hard, but timed well

14.3

Ladda to Miller, no run, wants to drive it through the covers but gets no timing on it

14.4

Ladda to Miller, OUT, bowled him, keeps low and sneaks through there! that's a big wicket, Miller is an in-form batsman but this time he's beaten by the pace and also does not bounce as much as he would have wanted, is rooted on the back foot and the ball goes through and uproots the stumps!

DA Miller b Ladda 10 (9m 8b 0x4 1x6) SR: 125.00

Does not release the ball this time Ladda.

14.5

Ladda to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, short of length and cut away for a single

Ladda takes a giant leap on his last bowling step, as high as Ashok Dinda I think.

14.6

Ladda to Hussey, 1 run, slower this time, taps it away through the covers for a single

End of over 15 (8 runs) Kings XI Punjab 111/4 (RR: 7.40)
DJ Hussey    14* (13b 1x4)      S Ladda    2-0-18-1
Gurkeerat Singh    1* (1b)      SP Narine    2-0-15-0

15.1

Senanayake to Hussey, 2 runs, slower from round the stumps, he was looking to cut it away and gets it in the gap too, almost beats Balaji at deep point but does well to pull it back in

15.2

Senanayake to Hussey, 1 run, carrom ball, a tad quicker on the middle stump and tucked it away to the leg side

15.3

Senanayake to Gurkeerat Singh, no run, outside the off stump and on a length, he goes back and defends back

15.4

Senanayake to Gurkeerat Singh, FOUR, Pathans misfielded it again, it was swept away to backward square-leg and he's allowed it to go through for a four, bad, bad fielding

15.5

Senanayake to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, direct hit, appeal for a run-out! was pushed into the covers and wanted to go for a single, there's a direct hit there but the batsman is well in, which is what the third ump says too! Ladda did well to field there

15.6

Senanayake to Hussey, 1 run, on the middle stump and is able to flick it away to the leg side for a single

End of over 16 (9 runs) Kings XI Punjab 120/4 (RR: 7.50)
DJ Hussey    18* (16b 1x4)      SMSM Senanayake    4-1-29-0
Gurkeerat Singh    6* (4b 1x4)      S Ladda    2-0-18-1

Narine comes in.

digish: "can't believe that all bowlers other than the two KKR premier bowlers have one wicket each."

16.1

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, big appeal for an lbw, the ball was turning back into the batsman and hits his pad but the umpire thinks it might be hitting outside the off

16.2

Narine to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, taps it to the off side, read that away going ball well and takes a quick one

16.3

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, swept and it goes on the bounce to Rajat Bhatia at the deep square-leg region

16.4

Narine to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 leg bye, wants to nudge it away but does not get any bat there, hits the pads and bounces off it, the keeper gets there to field

16.5

Narine to Hussey, 1 run, pushed it away to the leg side this time and they are off for a single

16.6

Narine to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, fuller, pushed back to the bowler, who looks like he's fumbled it, the batsmen wanted a single and Narine tries to get a run-out at the non-striker's end, misses the stumps and they are finally able to get away for a single

End of over 17 (6 runs) Kings XI Punjab 126/4 (RR: 7.41)
Gurkeerat Singh    8* (7b 1x4)      SP Narine    3-0-20-0
DJ Hussey    21* (19b 1x4)      SMSM Senanayake    4-1-29-0

17.1

Kallis to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, short of length and he opens the face of the bat, runs it down to third-man for a single

17.2

Kallis to Hussey, OUT, goes over the top and very well caught by Senanayake! it was not a quick one, he got it high and almost handsome, the fielder was right on the edge of the circle and is able to judge that well enough to pouch it, another wicket at a crucial time for Kallis

DJ Hussey c Senanayake b Kallis 21 (37m 20b 1x4 0x6) SR: 105.00

17.3

Kallis to Gurkeerat Singh, no run, outside the off stump, on a length and the lack of pace beats the outside edge, through to the keeper

17.4

Kallis to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, fuller on the middle and tapped away to long-on for a single

Bidwan Baruah: "Take away the 26 runs Pathan scored off Bhajii, I guess he has given away more runs through misfields than he has scored!"

17.5

Kallis to Azhar Mahmood, no run, on the middle stump, cramping him for room and he's only able to defend it to the leg side

17.6

Kallis to Azhar Mahmood, 1 run, fuller on the off stump and driven to the extra-cover fielder for a single

End of over 18 (3 runs) Kings XI Punjab 129/5 (RR: 7.16)
Azhar Mahmood    1* (2b)      JH Kallis    4-0-14-2
Gurkeerat Singh    10* (10b 1x4)      SP Narine    3-0-20-0

End of a very crucial spell from Kallis, who ends with figures of 2/14 in four overs!

18.1

Narine to Azhar Mahmood, no run, quicker, spinning back into the batsman and he's not able to get it away, hits his pads and rolls to the keeper

18.2

Narine to Azhar Mahmood, no run, and now it goes away from the bat, lot of turn, can only defend it to the bowler

18.3

Narine to Azhar Mahmood, 1 run, gives himself some room and drives it through the covers for a single

18.4

Narine to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, neatly opens the face of the bat and gets it away to point for a single

18.5

Narine to Azhar Mahmood, no run, tries to slam it away but it's shorter in length and gets it back to the bowler

18.6

Narine to Azhar Mahmood, OUT, gone, run-out, Mahmood's time in the middle was woeful and he's gone now! it was a leading edge to the backward point region, where Kallis fields well and gets it back to the keeper, Mahmood is halfway down the pitch but the non-striker is going nowhere, he's got to rush back but the only place he's rushing back is the dugout, caught well short of his crease

Azhar Mahmood run out 2 (5m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 28.57

Looked like a run there.

End of over 19 (2 runs) Kings XI Punjab 131/6 (RR: 6.89)
     SP Narine    4-0-22-0
Gurkeerat Singh    11* (11b 1x4)      JH Kallis    4-0-14-2

19.1

Balaji to Gurkeerat Singh, FOUR, cracked away for a four, fuller and he opens his stance up and heaves it over mid-wicket for a four

19.2

Balaji to Gurkeerat Singh, SIX, and this time he's got it a six! seemed to have come off the bottom of the blade but the man has enough power to get it over the straight boundary for maximum

19.3

Balaji to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, round the wicket and he wants to crash it over the bowler again, misses the middle of the bat, gets it down to long-on for a single

Chintan: "Where are those saying kallis must be removed...3/14 against SRH and now 2/14....consistent run-getter and wicket-taker.....probably the best all rounder in the world...frankly i would consider dropping naraine than kallis if given an option..."

19.4

Balaji to Chawla, no run, beaten by the slowness of the delivery, wanted to pull it away but gets nowhere close to hitting it

19.5

Balaji to Chawla, 1 bye, and again, he was trying to pull it away but the lack of pace meant that he got nowhere close, they are off for a bye

19.6

Balaji to Gurkeerat Singh, SIX, six to end it, and they end at 149! it was shorter in length and he camped on the back foot, and smacked it over mid-wicket for a six!

Gambhir is not happy. No, let me rephrase that, he is angry. He had a lot to say to Balaji after the first six was hit but after that last-ball maximum he had lost it. Totally. He goes into the dugout mumbling loudly at no-one in particular, needs to cool down before he gets down to his batting.

Overall, this is a pretty decent effort with the bat from Punjab. There were times it looked they could have got to 160 but then there was a time they could have gotten out for 135 too. Decent score on a slow pitch. Over to their bowlers now. Piyush Chawla has to buck up here, he's not had a good IPL so far and he's their lead spinner.

Back in 10.

Ankit: "@chintan..oh!!!!!..what did you just say??..it's like remove robert downy jr. from iron man series."

Anbu: "Disgusting to see Gambhir's mouthful against Balaji, I wish he got similar one from Dhoni when he hadn't scored any runs for India for a year!!"

Taha: "Gurkeerat has played a little blinder here!! 150 is defendable on this slow wicket!!"

End of over 20 (18 runs) Kings XI Punjab 149/6
Gurkeerat Singh    28* (15b 2x4 2x6)      L Balaji    4-0-44-1
PP Chawla    0* (2b)      SP Narine    4-0-22-0
