Indian Premier League - 63rd match

Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab won by 7 wickets (with 11 balls remaining)

Game time. Gayle and Pujara opening for RCB as usual. Dressed in green, they are. There's no Praveen Kumar to open the bowling for Kings XI today, so Azhar Mahmood has the new ball. Gayle's jersey has the number 175 on it, because of his innings against Pune. It used to be 333.

Sudarsan : "After looking at the Kings XI bowling attack, I have started wondering how they'll take Gayle's wicket. Only person who could have done something is praveen with his swing. Now that he is not there, I can see a run feast for Gayle today."

Amol: "I'm surprised at the viewers' indifferent reactions to the return of Zak the Ripper. His return has been acknowledged with merely a shake of the head, but no one can shake off the tremendous finesse he brings to RCB's bowling attack. Dangerous new ball bowler. Especially since he lost his reversing ability."

Kahlon: "Nobody is talking about Sandeep Sharma, he had a wonderful day with the ball in his first match against Sunrisers. Many might not know but he was also one of the best bowlers in this year's Ranji Season. Kings XI should have played him right from match 1."

Saurav Gandhi: "I think RCB should keep Pujara for the middle/lower order according to the situation. He can be handy if the top order is collapsing.."

Sharang: "Murli Karthik dropped due to the firesome trio. Marsh-Miller-Gilly can send the left armer into the stands. Murli will take the ball away from them!"

saith: "RCB made a good decision by giving rest to rampaul and taking muralitharan but what wrong has murali karthik done to be removed??"

Sudharsan: "For all those wondering the selection, Murali's offspin will be effective against Marsh miller and gichrist, and so as Zak, who has impressive record against left handers."

Unnikrishnan: "Zaheer Khan comes back , will he get the rhythm, pace, line and length in right groove?? I doubt...omitting Rampaul also looking to be unwise..he is a strike bowler.."

RCBian: "Poor Kolhi is disappointed for not winning the toss lately... He always wants to chase but the toss is not helping him from past few games...."

Nitesh: "Just wondering what Rampaul had done wrong. He is handy with the bat and has lowest economy rate for RCB with the ball. If KL Rahul is needed to bat today, RCB is doomed anyways."

Greg: "I would feel amazingly unlucky to miss out if I were Murali Kartik... Best bowler for RCB by far last game against KKR"

Nitesh: "RCB need to revisit their strategy in powerplays. If Gayle has to take time, they need to send Henriques at top to attack so that powerplay overs are not wasted."

Sekhar: "RCB seem to be going in with 5 bowlers with only Gayle's part-timers to fall back on. Big decision given what happened the last time the two teams met."

Naga: "Is Ravi Rampual injured?? He was most economical bowler this season for RCB..."

Hitesh: "Murali Karthik is out? The baller who gave away just 17 runs in his 4 over despite 1st ball six is out? Strange decision."

Sharath: "How can they drop Murali Kartik? He was so impressive in the last match.. just to accomodate Murali? I think its not a good move.."

Toss, 3.30 pm Kings XI captain Adam Gilchrist has just revealed that Muttiah Muralitharan and Zaheer Khan are playing for RCB today. That's a first.

Kohli tosses, Gilchrist calls heads and wins. Kings XI will bowl first, they prefer to chase. "So that the crowd get to see Chris Gayle bat earlier," says Gilchrist when asked why he's bowling first. Kohli says he would have bowled first as well.

Praveen Kumar is not playing today for Kings XI, Manpreet Gony is.

RCB have made four changes. Murali Karthik, Saurabh Tiwary, Ravi Rampaul and Abhimanyu Mithun are out. In come Muralitharan, Zaheer, KL Rahul and Arun Karthik. Wholesale stuff.

Sudarsan: "Good Move to bring in Murali. Main reason why RCB bowling suffers is that there is no mystery. Murali would be able to bring that mystery factor and would surely be able to trouble Miller the killer."

Ishan Jain: "RCB need to fire today big time. SRH almost pulled it off yesterday. RCB should thank Polly for his knock, but today they have to play well."

3.20 pm Today's Huddle will go live in about ten minutes. Mark Butcher, Sharda Ugra, Jarrod Kimber and Nitin Sundar will be on it. On the agenda: Pollard's mental hitting last night, and the best and worst of IPL jerseys. Speaking of which, RCB are playing in green today. They do this once a year: go green.

sundar: "Every season RCB seem to be cruising but falter at the last moment. Complacency is the only reason. Also Virat so young panicks in critical situation. Seniors in team have to guide him."

Jumbo: "Very few people are talking about the GayleStorm, thanks to Killer-Miller."

Prashanth: "The weather in Bangalore is cool alright.. but it might rain (sixes) later in the night.. will have to wait and see if it is from Miller the Killer or Gayle the guy who hits them mile !!"

Madhav: "KXIP vs RCB? More like, Marsh-Miller-Gilchrist vs Gayle-Kohli-AB. Rest, doesn't matter, don't care."

Noel: "Miller vs Gayle looks to be the talk of the town. However, both of them have failed to live up to the expectation in the last few games. Can the faith of the fans in these guys be justly rewarded today???"

Jolly: "Gayle has to fire today... has been a dud for quite a few matches.... I wonder what has happened to Dilshan... Once explosive player is now a mere add on . Mohd. Kaif would have played better than him"

Sumit Sengupta: "Time for Gilchrist to show his worth in the team and to shut all the critics around him. If his gets going, along with marsh and miller in the line up,, it will be enough for Bangalore for a perfect nightmare,,,,,"

3.10 pm Good afternoon and welcome to our ball-by-ball coverage of match 63 of the IPL. The Royal Challengers Bangalore are back home after a long and largely unfruitful time on the road. They've won only two away games - in Pune and Delhi - and have two more games to play at home. They really need to win both and are unbeaten in six games at home. Their opponents today are Kings XI Punjab, who technically still have a chance of making the playoffs. Technically. Here's how the teams stand at the moment. RCB are fourth and Kings XI are seventh.

RCB dropped valuable points against KKR, and then would have watched mortified, as Sunrisers Hyderabad appeared to be coasting to victory against Mumbai Indians, until Kieron Pollard did this thing at the Wankhede. RCB and Sunrisers are level on 16 points and are effectively battling for fourth place.

It's a pleasant afternoon in Bangalore, not too sunny, but the clouds aren't threatening. The city had a lot of rain over the weekend so that's made the weather much more bearable.

5.45 pm RCB were 52 after ten overs. They have scored 122 in the last ten overs. An extremely impressive acceleration to an innings that appeared to be going no where. Gayle and Kohli exploded on the Kings XI bowlers. This total is not beyond Kings XI on this pitch, though. But RCB have bolstered their bowling by playing Zaheer Khan and Muralitharan today. I'll be back shortly for the second innings.

Gayle says the wicket is "totally different" from the ones they have played on at home. He says it is drier and they had to make a lot of adjustment. He's very happy with 174, and accepts the Orange Cap for overtaking Michael Hussey as the highest run scorer of the tournament.

don: "When pujara said 170 earlier everybody thought that would be a very tall order, now they're 175. Just goes to show the players know what they can do and what they're capable of, so contrary to popular belief it seems these guys do know they're doing."
