Kings XI Punjab have provided the first major surprise of the new round of team-building by retaining little-known Punjab batsman Manan Vohra. The other player they held on to was South Africa batsman David Miller, who shot to fame in the IPL with a blistering century against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013.

Vohra, a right-hand batsman, has been retained as an uncapped player, and was hired by the franchise last year as a player for the future. He played 12 matches last season, and had a modest record of 161 runs at 20.12 with a top score of 43.

"Obviously, it's a good feeling because I never thought I would be retained," Vohra told ESPNcricinfo in Baroda, where he is playing Punjab's Ranji Trophy quarter-final tie against Jammu & Kashmir. "I did little bit for the team, but now I am excited because I will be playing for the home team."

Vohra's domestic form this season has been rich as he hit a big century against Jharkhand in Punjab's final Ranji league game in late December. "I was the highest scorer for Under-25, and got 187 against Jharkhand and they noticed it," he said. "I just got the news, so excited."

Miller, who was originally picked by Punjab as a replacement player in 2011, was retained for $100,000 in 2012 by the franchise. Although he failed that season, last year Miller finished as Punjab's leading scorer with 418 runs at a strike-rate of 164.56, including that whirlwind century against Royal Challengers.

Miller tweeted: "Really looking forward to this year's #IPL. So chuffed to be retained from @lionsdenkxip. #punjabi"

"We are rebuilding the team entirely but both Miller and Vohra were retained since we felt they had done well with us earlier," a Kings XI official said.

According to him, the franchise did not spend much time thinking about retaining any other player. "Miller is a very crucial batsman for us," the official said. "Apart from Bad Hodge and Kieron Pollard, there are not many like Miller who can turn matches in the lower middle order."

The official also said that Vohra was in the mould of Sanju Samson, the Kerala batsman, who has been retained by Rajasthan Royals. "This season he has been consistent scoring a few hundreds in Under-25 and has got a big century in the Ranji Trophy," the official said. "The previous team management had a lot of time for Vohra and he is a player we can develop."

Rs12.5 Crores for a foreign player is crazy. For this they could have retained just Vohra or none and eyed everyone just with RTM card, as like DD did. Its clearly an untactful move by KXIP once again as like the previous editions. RIP KXIP

not entirely related... for the next ipl, i think the organizers shud come up with some innovations to enhance the quality of viewing. Ex: Take a leaf out of the big bash and install cams on the batsmen's helmets (in the BBL, the umps have cams on their hats, batting view shud be even better).

KIngs XI punjab is very lucky to have some good domestic talent in their ranks like Mandeep, Vohra, Gurkeerat, Jiwanjot SIngh, Sandeep Sharma, Siddharth Kaul. They now just need to pick two good Indian capped players like Irfan Pathan and Zaheer Khan and uncapped spinners like Nadeem, Rasool, Iqbal Abdulla abd Bharghav Bhatt . With Miller already in the squad, Punjab should try to get dependable and very aggressive Finch as opener and duminy, hodge or Luke wright to complete their overseas quota of batsmen. Overseas bowlers could be Morkel, Starc, Bollinger and Lee.

1.finch 2 . starc 3. miller 4. hodge 5.harris 6.lee these are foriegn players add local lad yuvi, mandeep, gurkeet, vohra and chawla.... sandeepsharma vrvsingh and gony for their fast bowling line up with legend Lee...with chawla u can add pravez rasool too complete package of local talent and experienced t20 player this time around make kingx1 to be competitive side

king xi with the team they did very well last three seson ..but they were poor in auction ..when kochi tuskers was termited, i thought they would pick some one like r.p singh, vinay kumar r,jadeja ,kedhar jadhav but rater they made shocking decision by swaping dinesh kaarthick for r satish the only indian batsmen in the team ,immediatly gilly was injured they were forced to open with nithi saini (though his performance were fair . they were sitting qiuet for the entire auction...the overseas contigent were very good players......gilly,huss,miller,marsh,azhar,rhino....they should get huss, marsh ,awana ,sandeep sharma mishra and azhar back and get some good indian players ( sehwag ,yuvraj, bhuvi, dinda, shami, badrinath, dinesh kaarthick ,u chand ,rasoo along with overseas stars like, finch maxwell, mccullum ben stokes ,neesham ,bailey ,anderson, white ,johnson .etc...GILLY SHOULD BE THE COACHl ,

George Bailey has to be one of the best buys..an overseas batsman who is very good at playing spin and a captain....

@ Rahul Sharma on (January 11, 2014, 5:14 GMT): You stated:

"Best Playing Eleven For KXIP -- Warner/Finch, Maddy, Vohra, Yuvraj etc. "

Aren't we putting cart before the horse. Playing XI comes after forming the team, no? Many in your XI (or at least a few) may be playing for some other franchise, in the coming season. At least let us wait till the auction is over.

This is real poor thinking from punjab management. They have wasted 22 crores by retaining 2 players. I agree with retaining miller but what is the point of retaining vohra where he can be bought in auction at very low price. By retaining him they are wasting their purse, and they are investing lot more money on him where he would have bought back to punjab in auction for less price.

A lot of people want Yuvi back and while he could prove vital, he might be hot property in the auction. Punjab's XI could be something like 1.Finch, 2.Vohra, 3.Mandy, 4.DK, 5.Miller, 6.Neesham/Tendo, 7.Gurkeerat, 8.Starc/Pattinson, 9.Sandeep Sharma, 10.Awana/Shami? 11.Rahul Sharma/Nadeem Based on the players available and Punjab's management's poor showing in the previous auctions, I believe they can create a team like the one above. They need someone like Finch to lead as they don't have a captain, and a good Indian Batsman like DK who can also WK. They need one good fast bowler, and an all rounder to bring balance. Tendo would be perfect provided we can get him, but Neesham is doing really well too. Lastly, we could also have Marsh and some other good domestic players as back up. We do need to go for a new spinner though as Chawla just doesn't cut it anymore. Get Sandeep back and try to go for Shami and we will have a well balanced team.

vohra is an outstanding player but he need to just correct his shot selection as i observed in last ipl he need not to throw his wicket. well keep by KXIP.

Best Playing Eleven For KXIP -- Warner/Finch, Maddy, Vohra, Yuvraj Singh, Miller, Hodge, Irfan Pathan, Breet Lee, Chawla, Gony, Sandeep Sharma...

Posted by gauravm5 on (January 10, 2014, 20:52 GMT)

Kings XI Punjab is very lucky as they have very good players in Punjab domestic team: Mandeep, Gurkeerat, Jiwanjot, Manan Vohra, Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul, Rahul Sharma, Gony & Bipul Sharma. Pick all of them & add Zaheer & Yuvraj. Foreign batsmen could be Finch, Duminy, Hodge, Miller, Duminy & Azhar Mahmood. Best foreign available bowlers: Morkel, Starc, Harris.

Best playing 11: Finch, Mandeep, Vohra, Yuvraj, Duminy, Hodge, Gurkeerat (wk), Rahul Sharma, Zaheer, Morkel, Sandeep Sharma/S Kaul...... Duminy, Yuvi & Finch can play the role of fifth bowler.

Punjab's thinking makes no sense. There is no way that Manan Vohra would have gone for 40 mil in the auction (~ $ 666K). They could have always matched his highest bid if they wanted to retain him and saved on some money. On the other hand unless Marsh and Mandeep Singh asked to be released to the auction and negotiations with them broke down, there is no reason why the two of them would not be retained.

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 18:38 GMT)

No point retaining a player like Vohra no matter how much ever talented he is. Could have got him in during auction. Wouldn't have lost that much in buying him back. They will pay huge money for ppl like Chawla every auction and don't retain players like Marsh, Mahmood and Mandeep who have done so well for them. Not reasonable imo.

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 18:38 GMT)

Yogrj Singh publicly claimed Vohra is much much better than his son, and there is lot of bad blood between them. Dont think Yuvi will come bk

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 17:58 GMT)

Abundance of batting talent [Chand, Vohra, JiwanJyot, Samson, Zol, SuryaKumar and others] but the bowling cupboard is empty [I can't even name one bowler who has caught the eye]. Very distressing. Every state has an academy, but we can't even produce good spinners. The selection committees at State and National levels should be focusing on developing bowlers. One good bowler [Johnson, Steyn, Anderson] surrounded by others can win more than one match in a series and turn the series around. But a collection of batsman cannot. High time focus is prioritized.

Posted by TSJ07 on (January 10, 2014, 17:28 GMT)

Even though Vohra has talent but paying that much is not a good move.If they can retain Vohra then why not Mandeep (more talented but not performing acc. to his talent),Shaun Marsh,Azhar Mehood? Problem with Punjab was they did not have good Indian players in the last auction. Also due to combination problem they were not able to utilize a player like Ryan Harris. Now they should go hard for Yuvi,Rishi,Rassol,Dinesh,Marsh,Rahul Sharma,Ryan Mclaren etc.Even D Hussey will be cheap pick this time as he has not performed very well except 2012.Good luck Punjab and plz hire good people in management. You loose it here before you go into match.Vohra case is good example.

Bring yuvi back and buy bhuvi kumar

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 15:51 GMT)

Retaining miller was their smartest move which I think is best but Retaining Vohra was surprise because did partially good job in last IPL season but they might have looked to his domestic season which is going very good..........I think they would have also retained Shaun Marsh

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 15:50 GMT)

I feel KXIP should have opted for Marsh and Mandy. Marsh might be in poor form in BBL but is a different player in Indian conditions. Probably they would have felt he might not be picked in auction..

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 14:36 GMT)

They should retain no1 t20 alrounder azhar mahmood

Posted by binu.emiliya on (January 10, 2014, 14:21 GMT)

Good Decision he is very talented and attractive his only problem is going for big shots initial stage but this will add responsibility in his batting

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 14:14 GMT)

Kings X1 was anyways not going to use its entire purse amount of Rs 60 Crores....going by history of what they actually spent at previous IPL auctions...so the notional deduction of Rs 22 Crore for retaining Vohra and Miller is not going to make much of a difference to their actual cash allocation they would have kept for the auctions....they would have been able to negotiate very low actual salary amounts with both Vohra and Miller and hence retained them. Now, they should be using their first Right to Match Cards at the Auction to retain Shaun Marsh and the second Right to Match Card to retain either Mandeep /Gurkeerat/Sandeep Sharma/Praveen Kumar. They should be gunning to buy Yuvraj, D.Karthik, Bhuvi, Ojha/ Rahul Sharma as 4 Indian Capped Players and Rishi Dhawan as Uncapped Player at the auction alongwith any 7 of these overseas players: S.Smith, D.Smith, Perera, Sammy,Finch, R.Taylor, Du Plesis, Bailey, Hussey,Corey Anderson, Steyn, Johnson, Mahmood..to make a balanced squad !!

Posted by Niju_001 on (January 10, 2014, 14:07 GMT)

Shocked to see Manan Vohra retained. Probably sentiments or political gimmicks. They could have easily got him in the auction at much lesser price. Miller's selection was expected. The management of Kings XI is very poor and it is showing in their results. The change should start from there.

Posted by LOKESH20 on (January 10, 2014, 14:01 GMT)

Hats off to the management of kings XI.....this will motivate this youngster and lot of upcoming stars a confidence boost.....mark my words vohra and samson will become star player after 2015 WC......

Posted by shiviverma on (January 10, 2014, 13:40 GMT)

punjab played smart by keeping one uncapped player... deduction will be 40 million only for him... and miller was anyways hot property... plus they get 22 right to match card with 435 million purse... they can out buy the ambanis and other corporate honchos in the auction.... well played....

Posted by MaanVarinder on (January 10, 2014, 13:38 GMT)

another suspect of betting, as there is no way to retain vohra as 10 cr player....feed up from IPL

Posted by krishy23 on (January 10, 2014, 13:37 GMT)

KXIP are clever. they retain one of their best players in david miller as he would have been expensive at the auction and then they retain a talented uncapped player who would be worth 5.5 crore instead of 9.5 crore. this leaves KXIP with a bigger budget for the rest of the players and their 2 right-to-match cards if someone like shaun marsh goes for a high sum of money. all they need now are some good and experienced capped indian players.

Posted by wapuser on (January 10, 2014, 13:24 GMT)

Interesting choice by not retaining marsh, may be his fitness and his formnin BBL leads to that decision. All In all happy to see a young indian batsman geting center stage and miller is good finisher. Still finger crossed for the auction, hope things will pan out well! Love to see kings XI do well.

Posted by SidsIPLTeam on (January 10, 2014, 13:22 GMT)

Retaining Miller was a no brainer. And the only reason why Kings XI Punjab might have retained Vohra is because he is a talented young Indian top-order batsman. Contrary to popular belief, the franchise doesn't have to pay Vohra 95 million. They must have got him for a far cheaper price, close to what people believe his actual price would have been in an open auction. Its just that Kings XI in the process have blocked 95 million from their purse. Since, they operate on a relatively tight budget they never spend their whole purse anyway. However, sometimes auctions can get very tricky and if they actually want to spend their purse for a particular impact player towards the end of the auction, they might rue this decision, and deem it "silly" in hindsight.

Posted by ramli on (January 10, 2014, 13:16 GMT)

Now we know why KXIP has not made it big in IPl excepting season-1 ... leaving out everyone to build a new team would have made sense ... this retention is useless ... also ran team in IPL

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 13:05 GMT)

By retaining Vohra Kxip has ensured that they will have poor ipl 7 .

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 13:04 GMT)

They missed the trick maneep singh is a far better pick than manan vohra and since mandeep is uncapped he can be retained at a lower rate also.. And punjab should have retained shaun marsh along with david miller.. And they should try to get dk in auction as mumbai hasn't retained ,i though feel that CSK too will have a go at DK this tym Instead of m.vijay

Posted by Kohli--The_Messi_of_Cricket on (January 10, 2014, 13:01 GMT)

Vohra is undoubtedly a talented batsman but they could have bought both of them at the auction for a much lower price.

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 12:54 GMT)

very good decision done by kings XI ... he is very talent young batsman in india ......

Posted by Mr.CricketJKNotHussey on (January 10, 2014, 12:54 GMT)

Ok, I wasn't expecting Vohra, but Miller needed to be retained. It gives the player a sense of importance, and frankly, he would have been snatched if he was put out there. I would have liked to buy Vohra back as he is in good form but I didn't expect the other teams to bid highly for him, so it would have been cheaper but its done now. KXIP should now try to get Mandeep and Gurkeerat as they too are in good form and also go for Karthik or maybe Tare as they need a good WK. They could get Marsh back through their card and they should also get Sandeep Sharma. Now for the rest of the squad, one all rounder Neesham/Tendo/Weise, a good batsman/captain Finch/Bailey and a bowler, Starc or Steyn if we get lucky. One spinner like Nadeem, Rahul Sharma, Rasool or Abdulla Then its just a matter of picking some good backups Chris Lynn, Maddinson, good young talent and some Indian players like Pandey, Dhawan, Bhuvi, Kaul. This should form a strong core with a good bench. Good Luck!

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 12:53 GMT)

silly mistake by retaining Vohra at such a big price.............kings XI would have got him in the auction at very low price............... Miller was the obvious choice

Posted by DRS_Flawed_NeedsImprovement on (January 10, 2014, 12:53 GMT)

mannan vohra getting 10 crore if not 12.5 as per rule? Does he 'that' worth? But i strongly believe both are not worth for that huge amount.

Posted by dhoni_sachin_fan on (January 10, 2014, 12:53 GMT)

surprised that they haven't retained shaun marsh. maybe they want to check his value and buy him back during the auction

Posted by   on (January 10, 2014, 12:52 GMT)

They should retain shaun marsh

Nice Investment to Re-tain players like - Vohra & Miller because they are the future of Cricket By KXIP
