Sunrisers retain Dhawan and Steyn

Sunrisers Hyderabad have retained India batsman Shikhar Dhawan and South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn ahead of the IPL 2014 auction. They will have two right-to-match cards available to them at the auction, on February 12.

Dhawan's profile shot up in 2013, when he established himself in the Indian team across all formats. It began with the fastest century by a Test debutant, against Australia in Mohali, and he followed that up with a Man-of-the-Series performance in the Champions Trophy. He was also elevated to the captaincy of Sunrisers during the Champions League of the 2013 season, and was one of the few marquee Indian names in the squad.

Steyn has been the world's leading fast bowlers for several years, and had turned in several match-turning performances last season. He was signed for $1.2m in the 2011 auction, and would have expected similar, or perhaps better, returns in this auction.

Sunrisers coach Tom Moody tweeted: "Great news at @SunRisers we've retained Shikhar Dhawan & @DaleSteyn62 for #IPL2014 - Still have 2 " right to match cards" for auction day!"

After the specified amounts for the two players retained - Rs 125 million for player one and Rs 95 million for player two - are deducted from their salary cap of Rs 600 million (approx. US$ 9.6 million), Sunrisers will be left with Rs 380 million to spend at the auction. This season, each squad must include no less than 16 and no more than 27 players, with a maximum of nine overseas players.

The amount deducted from the auction purse is not necessarily the IPL fee agreed to between the franchise and the retained player.

    good move...they can pick two out of perera, sammy and mishra using the right to match cards....if they had retained one of these two, they would have one RTM card less, which is effectively the same thing..so good move i should say...at least it gives them more flexibility

    These two players have been the faces of SRH/DC last 3 seasons, so a good job retaining them.... as a batter Shikar was good, not sure how he is gonna captain the side if he's asked to do so. SRH Need to Target KP and some other good domestic batters.And have get back the home boy Venugopala Rao from DD! one of those buy back cards should be used on Darren Sammy!

    Great choices from the SRH camp. The batting can build around Dhawan while the bowling can be spearheaded by Steyn. SRH still need to use their "right to match" cards and spend the remaining money on last year's weakness. Sammy and Mishra should be bought back as they played important roles in guiding SRH to the finals. SRH should also buy good Indian players. Bowlers like Shami and Bhuvi will provide Steyn with good support, while their weak middle order can gain experience through Yuvraj and Uthappa. Johnson, Warner, B McCullum, D Smith, Dilshan and Senanayake will be good buys for SRH. Hopefully SRH can follow my advice :) Go SRH!!

    Players like Maxwell, A.Morkel can also be considered to fill in an allrounder slot. In 2013 auction, SRH tried to buy Maxwell but lost him to MI,hopefully they could get him this time. 1.S.Dhawan, 2. D.Smith/Warner/M.Hussey/Maxwell/KP/B.McCullum/Decock/Finch, 3.local(bat/bowl), 4. DKarthik/Yuvraj/Uthappa/Sehwag/Y.Pathan, 5. Vijay/Venu/Parthiv/Manoj/S.Tiwary, 6.Perera/Sammy (R2M) || Maxwell/A.Morkel, 7.local(Ashish Reddy/T.Suman, for example,) 8. A.Mishra(R2M) || P.ohja/Rahul/Karan, 9. Dale Steyn 10. Bhuvi/Irfan/Umesh/Shami/Zaheer/Mohit 11. M.Johnson/M.Morkel/J.Holder/Coulter Nile/ R.Harris/Lee/F.Edwards/Tait.

    They have a superb batsman and a bowler who currently is one of the best even in T20s with Malinga not in best of forms. Perera and Mishra can bought back through right2match while Sammy can be easily bought in the auctions. They might have to work hard on their strategy, I hope they take good domestic player like T Suman, V Rao, etc.

    @ CricketMaan thinks that "While Steyn is a champion bolwer, his T20 records is not that great(?). Along with Steyn could have retained Mishra who peformed so well for SRH?"

    T20 is about runs, runs and runs. A team does not have to take wickets, it has to stop the other team from scoring. Taking wickets does usually interrupt run flow, but consistently choking off runs is a bowlers best asset.

    Narine was the 2013 IPL's most economical bowler @ 5.46. Next was Steyn @ 5.66. (Mishra was not bad @ 6.35.) Batsmen try to survive Steyn, & target other bowlers. Steyn does not get easy wickets - he has to dismiss players who are defending. His limited overs bowling has really improved over the past few years, due in large measure to the IPL.

    Steyn's recent limited overs record is excellent. SA want him fit for tests, so have used him sparingly, playing him in only 10 more ODIs than tests! He has now forced his way in & immediately shot up to #2 ranked ODI bowler. Never underestimate him!
